Book Description
How to Right a Dog Gone Wrong will help anyone with a dog that has aggressive tendencies, whether it is a young dog that shows aggression when you remove the food bowl, a dog-aggressive dog that you are afraid to walk in the park, or a dog that is aggressive towards family and friends. Readers will gain an understanding of the causes of aggression and the various ways of dealing with it. Finally, they will learn a step by step program of rehabilitation that has been used successfully on hundreds of dogs, large and small, in all breeds.
Customer Reviews:
not what I expected.......2007-08-31
It took the author 4 YEARS to rehabilitate her dog using her method, and its easy to understand why. Nowhere in this book are you taught how to nurture trust and respect from your dog. The advice on training specific commands is worth reading, but probably not what most people that buy this book are looking for. The books I bought after reading this one were so much better. I would highly recommend the books by Patricia McConnell instead. Her 'How to be a Pack Leader' booklet is awesome and sets the stage for success with her other books, Feisty Fido and the Cautious Canine.
The Guide to Dog Survival.......2007-03-30
This is a no nonsense concise guide for training and rehabilitating an agressive dog and also their owner. Pam Dennison gives precise step by step positive training techniques that will create a lasting bond between human and dog. It is a must read for the agressive dog owner, but is also common sense training for any dog owner. Her use of positive reinforcement of good behavior rather than punishment for bad will make many dogs' lives happier. Her suggestion to keep a daily log of training is a great tool and she supplies a template. I've already seen great results using her techniques with both my dogs. This is a must read for all dog lovers, easy to read, and full of valuable information and insight.
For People with dog/dog and dog/people aggressive dogs.......2007-02-19
A useful book with straight forward explanations about "aggressive" emotions in dogs. A humane approach to management of these dogs and also helpful ideas to prevent people from making the situation worse and aggravating the anxious animal. A good book for new pet owners who find
dog handling to be more hazardous than anticipated.
Some other books that might help, too.......2006-08-17
I liked this book and feel it will help. Some other resources for some specific types of aggression not mentioned in the other reviews are "Fight!" by Jean Donaldson, for dogs that aggress toward other dogs, "Mine!" by Jean Donaldson, for dogs that guard their food bowl or other items of value (to the dog), and "Feisty Fido! Help for the Leash Aggressive Dog" by Patricia B. McConnell and Karen B. London. The techniques in these practical, reasonably-priced pamphlets would mesh well with the other resources mentioned.
Also try Sunshine Books (Karen Pryor).......2006-08-12
Although its been suggested in a review here, Aggression in Dogs: Practical Management, Prevention & Behaviour Modification (Paperback) by Brenda Aloff is rather expensive. I like Karen Pryor's books because they emphasize positive, reward driven training and behavior modification.
Book Description
They may be small, round and sweet, but the mugs on these pugs can't always be believed. Hidden beneath the big eyes and innocent-looking faces often lurks a pug who has waddled to the wrong side of the tracks. Petty theft, bribery, fraud, vandalism, even lewd and lascivious behavior are well documented in the mug shots of these pugs caught in the act of their pernicious crimes. Humorous? Yes. Funny? Not if you believe that pugs should be a little more decorous than this unruly bunch.

I am still laughing!.......2007-07-25
Wackiest pug book EVER! I have two pugs and I love to cuddle with them and read this book to them. I have never seen such risks taken in pug photography! Bravo!
Pugs Amok.......2007-05-01
One must be wary of an animal that owns the owner. So cute that misbehaving goes excused. This book may give us a glimpse of pugs gone amok, bad wiring.
On a lighter side this book makes a great gift and can brighten anyones day!
Truly Funny!.......2007-02-09
This is one of the very best Pug books I have seen or owned, and I have quite a few (Pug ownership is a kind of cult, I think). The "crimes" in the book are true to the breed and the pictures are excellent, but the best part is the hilarious descriptions of purely Pug behavior.
Hilarious Book.......2007-01-22
For all pug lovers (and dog lovers) out there, you will love this book. It is hilarious, and totally captures the personalities of the pugs in the book, and pugs in general, completely. My husband, nephew, niece and I loved this book, and could not stop laughing at the hilarious little stories and pictures.
love those critters.......2007-01-12
this little book was delightful, definitely what i had hoped for. the illustrations for each short story were amusing and creative, while the anecdotes were original and imaginative and full of humor. it was the perfect gift for a relative who dotes on his pug.

one of the best books in the series.......2007-02-27
if not the best. Also as someone pointed out, a great Christmas mystery. Conant writes about dogs with love. About people less so. But this is a satisfying mystery, both for dog lovers and mystery lovers in general. Cozy mysteries don't get much better than this.
A great Christmas mystery!.......2006-10-30
Although it's not Christmas, I enjoyed this Christmas mystery, as I have enjoyed all the books so far in this series aimed at dog fanciers everywhere. This was an excellent story, as well as a chance to see Rowdy and Kimi again. I am getting quite fond of Rowdy and Kimi. The book is about disaappearances and an "anal retentive" vet. Steve has finally given in to Lorraine and accepted that he requires another vet to help run his burgeoning practice. So Lorraine hires a new vet and he and his wife come to Cambridge. Althought the vet seemes competent, Holly has a few misgivings. The book is a little different as no bodies turn up, but that doesn't spoil the mystery. This is a very enjoyable series, and I can't wait to read the next one.
Oh where, oh where did my little vet go?.......2003-07-11
The 5th book in the Dog Lover's mystery series follows Holly Winter, dog lover/owner, on her next case. It seems that Holly and her two Malamutes, Kimi and Rowdy, are always finding themselves in the middle of investigations! This case involves missing vet, Oscar Patterson, and Holly cannot seem to let the mystery go. She asks mutual friends for information regarding the vet, and soon learns that another acquaintance has vanished, supposedly with the vet. Have these two run off together or was it murder? Can Holly and her two canine companions solve this case?
I have enjoyed the four previous books in the series and was a bit surprised by this installment. The author has signed with a new publisher, and I noticed right away that this book was much longer than the previous four. Even though her books were always pretty cerebral, this one seemed much more so to me. I enjoy the fact that I have to "think" I bit more when I am reading Conant's books, but at times I found the storyline a bit hard to follow. However, I love all of the aspects involving the dogs, and I believe that these books offer a wealth of information regarding dogs. As the author has done in the past, in this book she focuses on one topic of pet ownership that she feels strongly about. In this book, the author speaks strongly about harsh training methods, and the "unprofessional" trainers that practice them. If you are interested in dogs and like mysteries (albeit not the "simple" variety) this is a good series for you!
The first book in this series is "Paws Before Dying". Enjoy!
A Cozy Lover
More Dog then Mystery but in this case that's ok.......2000-05-20
"Gone to the Dogs" is the 5th installment in the Holly Winter Mystery Saga, but the first with a new publisher. I like what this publishing change has done for the quality of these books. Conant, always a good writer, has expanded her typical story length by a good hundred pages. This allows her to fill her stories out a little more making the pace and flow of the plotting better.
Diehard mystery fans might be disappointed with the level of mystery in these books. There is a mystery but it isn't that intricate, nor is it approached like a typical mystery novel.
The strength of these books is the information, research, and history given of dogs and show events. When I started this series I never though a dog mystery could be interesting in any way. But like any good author, Conant is able to fuel her passion into her writing getting you caught up in the enthusiasm. I've learned a lot about dogs reading these books, and I've enjoyed every minute of it.
One of her BEST!!.......1998-04-22
Ms. Conant once again outdoes herself with this one. I have read all of her books and this is one of my favorites. This is an excellent read for mystery buffs as well as dog lovers.

Grady revisited.......2001-11-09
Earlier this week our family suffered the loss of another beloved dog. After the initial shock lessened I remembered
what I call "The Grady Book". Up to attic I went and dug it out so that I could share it with my 7yr. old twin granddaughters. I knew Mr. Bronson during the time he was writing this book, my daughter Robin was his childrens' Nanny. I remember how concerned and caring he was regarding his girls feelings about Gradys death.
I felt that the book was just what my family needed this week, and as expected, it helped us all. We will all miss the big black Lab that has a part of the family for so long, but we will also remember the good times and smile.
Dog Gone - coping with the loss of your pet.......2000-08-03
I had recently lost my 12 yr. old Old English Sheepdog. He meant a great deal to me. In an attempt to cope with my feelings of loss, I found this book and ordered it. Little did I know the author would be writing about the loss of his OES, Grady. The author explains what it was like for him to lose Grady in a way that will touch your own feelings of loss. You will smile, remember little things, and shed some tears along the way. The book is a quick read, and is very easy for the average person to understand. The book has helped me to understand that I am not the only person to struggle with the loss of their companion. I highly recommend it for any dog lover, but especially OES lovers.

Book Description
Miss Piggy, everyone's favorite vamp-turned-mutt, is back for another matchmaking adventure! Shipped off to Arizona to work as a pet therapy dog, Piggy now lives with Nell Jordan, a freelance journalist living a hand-to-mouth existence writing human interest stories and volunteering for her pet therapy group, "Hearts of Gold." When one of the most curmudgeonly patients on their visiting route dies, Nell is shocked to learn that he's left $12 million...to Piggy! Miss Piggy's all-too-human-spirit is thrilled by her nouveau riche status, but foiled by her doggy exterior—and by the presence of Dan Travis, Nell's new boyfriend. Piggy's convinced that Dan's only after Nell's—er, Piggy's—money, and is determined to break them up. But Dan has secrets bigger than that, and as he falls harder and harder for Nell, they threaten to blow up in his face.
Customer Reviews:
Fun, fun, fun!.......2004-02-11
Lydia Keane, former hot babe, now reincarnated into the form of a Pembroke Welsh Corgi, is not a happy dog. Given a chance to right previous wrongs, Lydia, now known as Piggy, is on her third owner, Nell Jordan. Nell is proving to be boring with a capital B, until she becomes guardian to a huge sum of money that Piggy has inherited from a recently deceased cranky old coot who Piggy visited in her new job as a therapy dog. Who would've guessed that the elderly Frank Cramer was sitting on a fortune? Certainly neither Nell or Piggy, the latter frustrated to the extreme because she isn't capable of getting her hands...er...paws, on all of that lovely money. Instant fame ensues, with both Nell and Piggy looked upon as nefarious gold-diggers in the eyes of Frank's estranged daughter, and others.
Enter heroic Dan Travis, the handsome, sexy photographer who rescues both Nell and Piggy from their crashed car. Piggy is at once suspicious of this hunky do-gooder. Who on earth would be interested in plain-Jane, dull Nell, she wonders? When Dan becomes a regular visitor of Nell's, following her around claiming he's also a journalist who wants an exclusive on the unusual inheritance story, Piggy gets her fur up. And does she ever. Trying to ferret out Dan's true intentions, Piggy is far from willing to let him hone his radar onto the now rich Nell. What ensues is a hysterical story of Dog vs. Man.
Ms. Carmichael writes flawless characterization from human to dog, with an excellent flair for humor. The reincarnation element adds a welcome twist to what is already an enthralling storyline. Secondary characters are as in-depth and intregal as the main. A sub-plot involving Dan's mother and her long-lost love adds an unexpected and poignant side to this intriguing tale.
Emily Carmichael is a wonderful writer! I missed the first in this series about Lydia/Piggy called FINDING MR. RIGHT, but plan on getting it, soon! I'm sure it will go right next to my other keepers of hers, which include A DIAMOND IN THE RUFF (the second story), and now, GONE TO THE DOGS.
For a great read to break up the winter doldrums, I highly recommend GONE TO THE DOGS. Don't miss it!
Cute, funny, sweet and just plain fun!.......2004-02-06
Par for the course - I've once again discovered a new author by reading the last of a trilogy! This is the third book by Emily Carmichael featuring the incorrigible Welsh corgi Miss Piggy, AKA the late Lydia Keane who, on her death, was sent back to earth in the body of a dog to atone for her sins. Prior Piggy books are FINDING MR RIGHT and DIAMOND IN THE RUFF.
In this adventure, Piggy finds herself in Arizona living with freelance journalist Nell Jordan. Nell is a kind soul who has turned Piggy into a therapy dog (if you can believe it!), visiting hospitals, nursing homes and the like. When one of their patients dies (the gruff, curmudgeonly Frank Cramer) both Piggy and Nell are stunned to discover that Frank left his 12 million-dollar fortune to Piggy! (with Nell as her guardian). While Piggy is thrilled, Nell is stunned and now must be wary of leeches and hangers-on interested only in the money. But is her new love interest, photographer Dan Travis one of them? Piggy for one is very suspicious of "Studly Dan"!
And perhaps Piggy has reason to be suspicious, for Dan is not really a photographer he's a former LA cop, now a private detective hired by Frank's daughter. She is convinced Nell is a conniving bimbo who charmed Frank out of his millions. While he's got a job to do, Dan finds himself captivated by the sweet and sexy Nell. Dan has other secrets he's keeping that I won't reveal here and Piggy decides to make it her mission to sabotage his romantic efforts with Nell (her efforts are hysterical!). As the days pass, it looks like Nell is definitely falling for the "studmuffin" so it looks like Piggy's going to have to kick it up a notch. She uncovers Dan's most damning secret and brings it to Nell's attention (ever seen a dog type?!) and it finally looks like Piggy's matchbusting (matchmaking in reverse) is finally working when a tearful Nell kicks him out of her life. Problem is Dan has come to have very real feelings for Nell. He has always doubted that Nell is capable of deception, but he does uncover a secret from her past that makes him wonder. Will they ever clear the air and be able to trust one another?
This was a really fun book that had me chuckling with regularity. It may be too cute for some, but I got a kick out of Piggy, her ingenuity and her disdain for just about all of the humans she comes into contact with (she has some of the best lines in the book!). But she does have a heart and she proves it more than once. I haven't enjoyed getting into the mind of a dog so much since meeting Hairy from Susan Donovan's TAKE A CHANCE ON ME!. I think I will have to investigate Piggy's first two adventures and will likely also read two upcoming books surrounding Nell's friends and fellow therapy volunteers Mckenna and her cat Nefertiti (in THE CAT'S MEOW, Fall '04), and Jane with her border collie Idaho (TBD).
This author also writes historicals set in the American West in the mid to late 1800's that may also be worth checking out. Highly recommended.
strong romance with a funny bone "reincarnation".......2003-12-31
Beautiful Lynda Keene was selfish and nasty until she was murdered while making "whoopee" with her best friend's husband. Lynda awakened to find herself condemned by Stanley the bean-counter to work undercover on earth doing good deeds. However, Lynda finds that she does not return as a perfect 10, but ironically as an obese Corgi, looking more like a "basketball with legs".
Now living in Cottonwood, Arizona, her current owner writer Nell Jordan places Miss Piggy as everyone calls her on a strict diet forcing the starving canine to seek crumbs. The two females visit medical facilities and nursing homes to provide comfort to the patients and residents. When senior citizen Frank Cramer dies, he bequests a fortune to that 36-24-34 soul, Miss Piggy, whom stayed with him until his last breath. Private investigator Dan Travis goes undercover as a photographer investigating Nell at the request of his agitated mother over her dad's estate going to the dog. Miss Piggy does not trust this gigolo romancing her pet human, but those feelings conflict with her prime directive of performing good deeds through matchmaking.
When Miss Piggy wags her tail, the story line is clever, insightful, and fun as a not so repentant Lynda acts good, bad, but definitely no longer sexy. The story line has a bit of suspense with a wannabe dognapper, but that takes away from the charming prime theme of Piggy matchmaking yet also preventing a match as the dog struggles with FINDING MR. RIGHT for Nell. The animal therapy scenes are educational and augment a strong romance with a funny bone that sends fans to the dogs.

Great for little adventurers.......2003-11-26
This book is similar to "I'm a Little Teapot" in that the story follows a runaway dog through zany adventures through sightseeing in New York City, mountain climbing (my daughter laughs hard on this one), surfing the ocean, exploring the desert, being in a rodeo (love the cowboy boots on each of his four feet--lol!), and examining a cave.
The reader sings the story (twelve stanzas) using the familiar tune of the book's title. My daughter loves this and all Iza Trapani books for the colorful, funny illustrations as well hearing the songs. Singing books are entertaining and educational, teaching your child valuable listening skills and understanding pitch. My daughter sings right on key and has a good sense of rhythm and I believe Iza's books have greatly helped her achieve this. Thanks, Iza! How about a kitty book? Takeaway value: There's no place like home.
Soar!
Oh Where, Oh Where Has My Little Dog Gone?.......2001-07-27
Absolutely wonderful book! Perfect for children! I am currently in the field of early childhood education and my children loved it! You can use this as a sing-along story. Wonderfully age appropriate for preschoolers. GREAT book!
Favorite Book for Three Toddlers in a Row.......2000-09-19
Bought this book when my first born was about 1 1/2 years old. Until then she would not sit and listen to stories. She (and I) fell in love with "Oh Where Oh Where...". She is now five and still will pull it off the bookshelf often. Now her two younger siblings are joining the fun of singing the story. We have a whole collection of Iza Trapani books but this is still our favorite.
Book Description
A wonderful account in photographs and text of training a Labrador puppy, as well as a poignant memoir of love and loss.

Life with Dogs.......2007-02-23
This book touches on why we have and love our dogs. It was a page-turner for me. Any dog owner can relate to the reasons for owning pets and their special bonds with us. I found it a good book to add to my dog book collection.
Book Description
Nearly all dog owners encounter behavior problems at some time during their pet's life, and this book offers sound, humane methods for coping with both major and minor difficulties. Dog trainer Gwen Bailey explains aggression and ways to control it, barking problems, isolation as a cause of bad habits, sex-related problems, housetraining issues, chasing cars, and much more. For each type of behavior problem, she presents brief case histories, observations and diagnoses, appropriate treatment plans, and their outcomes. Readers will also find informative Q & A sections and enlightening sidebar notes. Attractive full-color illustrations are featured on nearly every page.
Customer Reviews:
Good basic book for pet owners with "problem" dogs.......2007-07-25
"Dog gone good" is a cute little book; small, well illustrated and very well written.
This book comprises a series of short chapters, each giving basic information on a different canine behavioural problem: from aggression towards other dogs, aggression towards humans, predatory behaviour, and separation anxiety, to house training problems and car travel issues.
The author uses a friendly conversational tone, and while she does not dumb down the topics, the book is not too technical for the average pet owner to understand. In each chapter she describes the symptoms of the behaviour problem, explains its possible causes, and then describes solutions that can be implemented. The author describes how to recognise when cases are too complicated or dangerous to treat at home, and where appropriate she suggests referral to a carefully selected professional behaviourist.
"Dog gone good" is packed with attractive photographs, and each chapter includes a question-and-answer section, and at least one case study. The author obviously knows her stuff, since the suggestions are sensible and humane, and drawn from a wide variety of training methods. As appropriate for a book aimed at the general public, the methods focus on reward and/or hands-off punishment, instead of physical aversives.
This book would be too basic to interest a professional behaviourist. However, for someone who is inexperienced in dealing with dog behaviour issues and who is suddenly faced with one, this book could be a great help. Using this book, even a complete novice to dog training should be able to diagnose what they are dealing with, understand its severity, and understand the issues and methods that will be involved in treatment - and will be able to make an informed decision about whether to seek professional help.
Highly recommended!
