Book Description

What is a dangerous man? Most women would answer: one who is physically violent. But abusive behavior is often more insidious. Men who want mothers, not partners, who prey on lonely, passive women, who are mentally ill, addicted, or emotionally unavailable, or who won't go away when asked to leave all fall into this dangerous category. In this book women are encouraged to take responsibility for their own safety, are shown how to choose men wisely, and learn how not to make the same mistake twice. Thirteen chapters cover all the red flags of a dangerous man, offer stories of women's successes and failures dealing with each type, and provide safe ways to get out of a hazardous relationship. Armed with this valuable information, women have the tools they need to cultivate positive and healthy relationships with men.

Wish this book was out years ago! Very good regarding subtle signs (as well as obvious) early in the relationship. Love the Red Alert Checklists.
This is NOT a "man bashing" book, the author invites us to look at ourselves as well. Describes some behaviors that women may have that attract a dangerous man.

This book showed me what I was doing wrong, and it enabled to to avoid other dangerous men - it greatly changed my life. Thanks!

Sometimes we avoid stress by keeping ourself in the dark....however learn that it takes more energy to move around in the dark than the light. The more we know, the brighter the light...the brighter the light the easier it is not to trip on the trash on the floor. The men have issues...we may as gentle women learn to forgive them spiritually, however their behavior is "Trash" and they are acting as if they do not understand the word "Respect"...they don't. The sad part is...the absolute saddest part is...they don't get it....and you cannot teach a person to have a conscious...reading this book helps the light become bright and your life to be easier rather than more stressful. Once you read this you can identify it is "them" with the problem...and your only problem was "Believing in them" and taking their lies for truth. This book does uncover hurtful truths...however a truth is a truth and is there whether you want to believe it or not.

4 out of 5 stars Yikes! I'm so glad I read this book!.......2007-03-07

If you've ever wondered if you're the "crazy one," or why you seem to attract losers, this is a very insightful book.

This book opened my eyes to what a bad situation I was in, and just how bad it could end up. I always suspected that some of the guys I've dated had mental problems but would talk myself out of it. Now I see how important it is to trust these initial red flags and uneasy feelings. Even if your guy is not pathological, if you've got red flags and discomfort, this book wisely advises you to get out fast and why. The unfortunate thing about these dangerous men is that they are so charming, affectionate, intelligent, and desirable at first, that you are long-since hooked before the creep in them emerges. This book gives practical advice for how to recognize potential issues before you're hooked and his personality has changed.

For anyone who's skeptical, no, I did not think this was a male-bashing book or "any guy could fit into those categories." Not so. It even gives a list of traits to look for when analyzing whether yours is a healthy or unhealthy relationship.

It's a quick read and well worth it.

5 out of 5 stars "Truth is light".......2007-01-28

How to Spot a Dangerous Man is a compelling, forthright, no non-sense book which will help the open-minded reader face her relationship/insecurity (among other things) demons. Ms. Brown not only discusses the how's, the why's, but offers insight on how to stop the madness. I just purchased four additional copies to pass on to my daughters and the workbook for myself.

The fact that professional women, older women, previously hurt women are continually falling for dangerous men is eye-opening. The facts are not to be ignored; IF, you want to do something different.

I highly recommend this book for ALL women; young and old.

5 out of 5 stars How to spot a dangerous man workbook.......2007-01-09

I think it is a must read if you want to brake the circle of having the same men in your life who lead to the same dead ends time after time. I lost 20 years in the dating game. This book showed me why... :-)

I am able to deal with men and myself differently all together and can already see that I benefit. I was able to spot a few "dangerous" men quite quickly into getting to know them. I didn't say much, they just got lost. I was also able to walk away from potential hurt. I am happy about that.

I would like to suggest though that you read the book how to spot a dangerous man first before you attempt the workshop workbook. It did help me to do some of the exercises. What I mean is I did understand where the author came from and why she asked some questions...

5 out of 5 stars If you live in a nice Christian cocoon, here is your wake up call.......2007-07-03

Women's Ministry leader and founder of a recovery program for women, Wellspring Living, author Mary Frances Bowley knows well each person described in A League of Dangerous Women. With compassion rather than condemnation, following the precepts laid down in Scripture, letting her Lord relate to each distressed women He brings her, Bowley has rich experience and deep truths to share. Be prepared to be dynamited out of your rut. Our God is a God of miracles, and this is a book of miracles happening right now in the lives of desperate, terribly abused, totally lost women. Not only does the Lord save, He washes white as snow and sends the washed ones out to witness for Him.

Meet Danielle, physically, verbally, and sexually abused in childhood, as she makes a desperate bid to rise out of the mire of drug addiction and prostitution. How did she find Jesus? One desperate day, after hearing about the Lord, she opened the front door and asked Jesus to come in and be her best friend and walk with her forever. And the miracles began to happen.

Meet Tracy who went to Church yet was betrayed by the parents who took her there. The forces of darkness reached out to claim her and drive her into deathly desperation. She tried suicide, alcohol, drugs, sex, and an abortion. When nothing else helped, she called unto the Lord, and from then on, no matter how dark the way became, God continually reached out until Tracy stumbled into His arms and her miracles.

Including Danielle and Tracy, there are 14 such biographies in A League of Dangerous Women. This volume closes with a special prayer, one useable by all people, written by Tracy

This is a must-read book. If you are desperate or know one chained by desperation, here are answers. If you live in a nice Christian cocoon, here is your wake up call. If the Lord is calling you to ministry, Bowley's memoirs and insights will help you. If you are not a Christian, read and see just how God can work. - Donna Eggett, Christian Book Previews.com

4 out of 5 stars Important for women of all ages.......2007-04-18

People with nothing to lose are dangerous, but not to the extent that those who have everything to give are.

Mary Bowley demonstrates that the most dangerous people "count it all joy" by looking at the bigger picture. They do this with an unshakable faith that all will be well, no matter what circumstances look like at this moment. Such people have come through the fires of hell in one piece and have survived--No, they have prospered. Now they spread the good word of hope, and this is the lesson of A League of Dangerous Women: If we know it, then we can achieve it, and then we will facilitate it for others.

Groups of women have been dangerous in the past, among them America's suffragettes of the19th and 20th centuries. Some men and women alike that opposed their right to vote abused them. Just as disturbingly today, some women are abused in more ways, starting as early as infancy when they are molested, raped, belittled, beaten, burned, neglected, starved, and thrown out. Further, because of peer pressure and spousal abandonment, many American women fall victim to drug addiction, alcoholism, unwed pregnancy, cult lifestyles, homelessness, poverty, prostitution, and suicide.

With nothing left to lose, these women come to Wellspring and its way station home, where the staff and residents show that God is still in the healing business. Wellspring Living's motto is: "Changing Our World by Changing Hers."

The staff members are in recovery as well, or at least have a calling to help, but they all receive more than they invest. Friends, family, church, and the legal system refer young broken women. Any of their stories, recorded as chapters, could stand alone as an important film. Together, they make a formidable team that cannot stop what God has started, but only help to finish it: growth, independence, and blessings.

These women progressed from broken vessels, to women dangerous to themselves and others, to heroes boldly dangerous for God and His promises for healing, deliverance, and truth through salvation in Jesus Christ of Nazareth. They won't settle for less, and it's all real.

This book is for any woman--middle school girls to senior citizen. I hope that women everywhere can become so dangerous.

Armchair Interviews says: Those wonderful "dangerous" women get a lot done.

4 out of 5 stars Reliable Book from Reliable Author.......2006-06-06

When you pick up a Sharon McCone book by Marcia Muller, yuo pretty much know what you are going to get-- a solid detective novel that integrates nicely with Sharon McCone's personal life--and that's okay. In The Dangerous Hour, one of McCone's employees is arrested for credit card fraud and the McCone Detective Agency is the subject of a BBB complaint. Not only that, but they are fighting against allegations leveled against the agency by an Hispanic San Francisco mayoral candidate.

While dealing with all of this, in addition to covering her cases, McCone is also working through the twist that her romance with security operative Hy Ripinski has taken.

One of the things I like about this series is that the McCone character is allowed to grow and become professionally successful. She follows an actual life pathway, as opposed to characters in other series who seem to be frozen in time.

The Dangerous Hour is another solid book in a solid series, with strong, likable characters and believable villains. It's nice to see a mystery author who is able to keep up the quality of her books with the release of the 23rd book in the series.

4 out of 5 stars Classic Sharon McCone mystery.......2006-05-03

This is the kind of mystery that you look forward to getting back to and that will get read quickly but will not keep you up until 3 in the morning because you can't bear to put it down. That's not such a bad thing -- sometimes those keep-you-up-all-night books aren't such a good idea. I've read quite a few in this mystery series and character Sharon McCone feels like an old friend. In this book, there are a number of references to events and people in previous books that might make parts of this book less accessible to new readers, although they really don't have much to do with the plot.

The plot involves the arrest of Jules, one of Sharon's employees (Sharon runs a very successful detective agency in San Francisco). Jules is accused of stealing and using a credit card from the client in a case she was assigned to, and for reasons that aren't very convincing, even before Jules is even arraigned, Sharon's agency is being threatened with losing its license to operate because she is responsible for her employees' actions on the job. Sharon has to prove that Jules didn't do it in order to save the agency. Although Jules has a colorful background, Sharon believes in her innocence, and it quickly becomes apparent that this is a frame with Sharon's agency as the real target. The plot then becomes Sharon trying to find out who is framing Jules, which involves finding out who has a grudge against her that is motivating this frame.

I wouldn't describe this as one of those mysteries that you ought to be able to solve if you read the clues correctly -- it's more of a procedural, where you follow along with Sharon as she tries to solve the case. The real strength of the book is Sharon's likeability -- she's someone you enjoy spending time with in a book -- and Muller's writing skills, which create a whole exciting San Francisco world.

5 out of 5 stars Another great McCone Mystery.......2005-09-06

I have been reading these mysteries from the very first book, it was a nice change to have the book read to me. The book was well read except for some for the pronunciations of some of the famous and infamous locales. I admit I cringed every time I heard Susan Ericksen say Ghirardelli Square.

The characters have evolved nicely over the years and I highly recommend this book, personally I love the audio cd's during my commute to and from work.

5 out of 5 stars Sharon Still Rocks.......2005-06-24

More than 20 books later, Sharon is still the best female PI out there.

It took way too long for this one to come out. As much as I enjoyed "Point Deception" and "Cyanide Wells," I wish Ms. Muller would make a new installment of Sharon her first priority so that we get at least one every year.

A few reasons I enjoyed this one so much:

- It was nice to take a trip down memory lane and remember some of the old cases. I started reading Sharon many years ago, so I enjoyed having my mind nudged on some of her previous adventures. I may have to go back now and read some of the earlier books again.

- Little to no Rae. For some reason, this is the one character in this series to whom I've never been able to warm up.

- No Hy smothering. I might be in the minority, but I'm not a fan of Sharon's relationship with Hy, so I was glad there wasn't too much of him in this book. One of the things I love most about Sharon is her independence -- she works hard and takes care of herself. Since Hy entered her life, now we have private planes and second/third homes, and access to the highest tech gadgets and world-class security. It's made Sharon seem a bit less believable. Unfortunately, based on the ending, it looks like this will only increase in the future, and I just hope Ms. Muller keeps it under control and doesn't completely ruin the character.

I anxiously look forward to the next book and hope I don't have to wait two years for it.

4 out of 5 stars Marcia Muller in top shape!.......2005-06-17

It's amazing, but after so many books Marcia Muller writes with a freshness like she started yesterday. Her heroine Sharon McCone has gone through many changes and is now a grown-up woman, but like her creator she keeps young and alert. And fiercly independent!

The story is great and the investigation, the twists and inevitable confrontations too. You get sucked into Sharon's life, her office on the pier in San Francisco under the bridge, her employees and their different problems and charasteristics. It's not easy being a boss and a skilled operator at the same time! And at the very end of the book, Muller allows herself to please us in a romantic way... Delicious.

So why the missing fifth star? Well, that is due to one thing and one thing only: I can't help but feel that there is more to Muller than she lets us see.She does not dwell on sadistic violence, thanks for that!, but in my opinion she doesn't explore everything that is explorable either. She has the brains and wits and life experience for it, I'm sure. I'd like to see a little more authority and recklessness. So anchors away, Muller!

As a bonus, the book contains chapters of Cape Perdido, soon released, and they certainly pique my interest.

My recommendation is: Read The Dangerous Hour! New reader or old fan - you'll love it.

Book Description

"Its publication should be a major event for cognitive linguistics and should pose a major challenge for cognitive science. In addition, it should have repercussions in a variety of disciplines, ranging from anthropology and psychology to epistemology and the philosophy of science. . . . Lakoff asks: What do categories of language and thought reveal about the human mind? Offering both general theory and minute details, Lakoff shows that categories reveal a great deal."—David E. 3 out of 5 stars Great Linguists...Terrible Writer.......2007-05-11

This was the first popular ground-breaking synthesis on the issue of categorization from a cognitive-linguistic perspective at the time of its writing. Unfortunately, althought George Lakoff is a top notch linguistic thinker, his writing is terrible and confusing. I sincerely recommend you read Language, Culture and Mind by Kovesces. He is much better at explaining the ideas in Women, Fire, and Dangerous Things than George Lakoff.

3 out of 5 stars Contains some interesting material.......2006-07-16

There really isn't all that much to this book. Lakoff talks about categorization, but he has nothing special to say about it. And he discusses language, but once again, I wasn't impressed.

Then we get into "objectivist" statements. I found this utterly unrevealing. The point is that some statements are not vague. But other statements are indeed vague, either because it is simply not worth making them more coherent or because it is (gasp) impossible to make them entirely unambiguous. So what?

It is easy to see examples of this in real life. Perhaps a simple example (mine, not the author's) is this: what do you do if you are a hostile witness in a court case and you are asked if the defendant threatened the deceased? You might be able to answer with a simple yes or no. But it is quite possible that (even though the Law of the Excluded Middle appears to say that this is not supposed to happen), both "yes" and "no" are (due to the vagueness of the question) extremely misleading at best, if not outright lies.

Incredibly, that is, in a nutshell, the extent of the wisdom we see in this rather long book. It is an easy read, but it is not very deep.

5 out of 5 stars A new world is only a new mind.......2006-05-29

I found this to be one of the most interesting books I have ever read. For me it's a revolutionary work in the sense that very rarely do books such as this come into my life -- maybe once every five years -- and have the ability to forever change the way I think about the world. And as with all such important books, it is iconoclastic and will not please everyone. Some will no doubt hate it, but most of the objectivist academics have no doubt long since dismissed it as nonsense. Most assuredly it is not without its faults. For example, Lakoff tends to rail a bit much against what he calls "objectivist" viewpoints (those who espouse some flavor of the correspondence theory of truth), which includes pretty much all of the present day scientific community as well as the majority of Anglo-American analytic philosophers. In addition, the book is admittedly long-winded and a little repetitious in places. By the time I had gotten to the end of the second case study, I was totally burned out and could not continue any further. But it wasn't disenchantment with the book so much as the desire to just move on to something else. I have yet to read the third case study, but I will eventually. In fact, I know that I will come back to this book many times in the future to refer to the numerous insights which lie scattered everywhere throughout the text.

Contrary to what you may have been told, Lakoff is NOT an egotistical academic. He is quick to give credit and praise to others for many or most of the ideas contained in this work. Nor is he vain and arrogant; on occasion he even makes fun of himself. He does not talk down to the reader, but his expectation is that you are able to follow his argument, which is intelligent-undergraduate level. To be sure, he has not tried to water down the ideas to appeal to a wide audience of couch potatoes.

I especially like the format of this book: the larger type is easy on my older eyes; excellent paper quality, generous margins, little or no typos: All make for a first-rate reading experience, a real treat. The generous margins are useful for jotting down quick notes on the side for future reference, as I did repeatedly thoughout this book.

I will end with one example of the many insights that fill this fascinating book: Viewing truth as a radial concept forms the foundation for a mature relativism "Because, as we have seen, truth cannot be characterized as correspondence to a physical reality, we must recognize truth as a human concept, subject to the laws of human thought... There are central and non-central truths. The central truths are characterized in terms of directly understood concepts, concepts that fit the pre-conceptual structure of experience. Such concepts are (a) basic-level concepts in the physical domain, and (b) general schemas emerging from experience...." The fact that there are central truths and non-central truths means that by realizing that the truths we live by are not central, we can gain an appreciation of and respect for the truths others live by.

In summary, this book held my attention for more than 400 pages, was thought-provoking, challenging, rewarding, and one of the most satisfying intellectual experiences I have encountered to date. I strongly recommend it.

I'd say it's a book I'll keep and likely use as a reference but I doubt I'll ever read the whole thing. It goes into WAY too much detail about too many sub-points and comes out being very very dry reading.

It's half dictionary, 80% iterative tangents made linear and 100% too much material. The style is also a little odd, being textbookish while also seeming very peer-reviewed journal. Not quite what I was expecting.

    Book Description

Her rallying cry was famous: "Pray for the dead and fight like hell for the living." Mother Jones (1837-1930) was a celebrated organizer and agitator, the very soul of the labor movement in the early twentieth century. At coal strikes, steel strikes, railroad, textile, and brewery strikes, Mother Jones was always there, stirring the workers to action and enraging the powerful.

Mother Jones was on the brink of old age when she began her public life, and her early years have long been shrouded in obscurity. Elliott J. Gorn has uncovered them here, as he not only interprets her career as an agitator but also looks back at her emigration from Ireland, her work as schoolteacher and dressmaker, the tragic early deaths of her husband and children, and the "lost years" when she faded from view altogether. In so doing, he shows how great world events (the Irish potato famine, the cholera epidemic) affected the course of her life and thus the life of the American labor movement. In short, Gorn makes it clear why, in the words of Eugene V. Debs, Mother Jones "has won her way into the hearts of the nation's toilers, and . . . will be lovingly remembered by their children and their children's children forever."

    4 out of 5 stars Saint Jones.......2006-06-26

A lot of good detail is presented in this biography, a lot of moral force worth bringing to our attention.

Many of us are curently such spoiled and cowardly workers that we need historians like Ellliott J. Gorn to give us a dose of a truth that most of our employers, politicians and media don't want us to be exposed to. Is "American Idol" on? I suppose we do need someone else to shake up.

From the historical record, it may not have been possible to uncover more of what made Mary Jones into Mother Jones: what it seems, as a historian and not a psychologist, Gorn has wisely done is to show how the conditions of Mary Jone's times presented her with challenges which she responded to bravely. You or I may have dodged the same challenges but not Mother Jones. It is well worth Mary Jones and Gorn showing us what is possible.

Mother Jones eschewed religion, socialist parties, and the IWW. If without an answer, she demanded answers of those who we might have thought could help us. She knew what common folk were capable of but she also insisted on leaders being leaders and not servants of the rich.

Hard times are upon us. Globalization and war machinery of unprecended strength and concentrations of wealth threaten all working people, whether in the United States, Mexico, India, China, Uganda, Peru, or Antarctica. Mother Jones did not cater to national or religious boundaries. I hope I can rouse myself from my reading of this book as I suggest you do. We have hope if we don't delay.

    4 out of 5 stars well done!.......2005-07-26

Elliott J. Gorn has written a well-researched biography of one of Labor's greatest spokesperson. Gorn writes a complete book on Mother Jones, Mary Jones, and even Mary Harris -- the person AND the persona. His objectivity allows him to correct Mother Jones' revisionist history of her own life and her achievements, even as he praises her deep committment and her probable rationale for exaggerating her achievements. One slight criticism is that Gorn on occasion follows one aspect of the Labor movement (or Mother's) struggle, then goes back in time to pick up another thread. In his great favor, though, Gorn details the incorrect details and unfair attacks of other authors, both of her day and later. If you read only one book on Mother Jones, this should be it.

    5 out of 5 stars A lively coverage.......2001-10-12

This biography recalls early American radicalism and the efforts of one Mary Jones, a force in the early labor movement. She traveled throughout the country lobbying for civil rights, labor laws and basic worker's rights: her career, life, and long-ranging effects on American labor are recounted in a lively coverage.

    4 out of 5 stars Mother Jones: Everybody's mother.......2001-10-05

Elliott Gorn has written an excellent biography of Mary Harris Jones, better known as Mother Jones. Gorn has applied critical analysis to his meticulous and quite impressive research--this was not an easy woman to pin down, and Gorn has managed with limited materials to convey the essence of her life. In doing so, he tells three simultaneous stories, all significant for a broad view of American history. First is the story of Mary Jones herself. Her life was both tragic and triumphant, and Gorn treats it with sensitivity and a light touch, conjecturing at times to what she must have felt, but never presuming to be inside her head or heart. The second story is the story of the American labor movement, particularly that of the United Mine Workers, and their struggle against BIG CAPITAL. Gorn does not overemphasize the uneven nature of this struggle, nor does he dwell on the massive injustices against the mine workers by mine owners, coal interests, and even the Federal Government. He gives it to us straight. The facts speak for themselves. But Gorn presents the facts in the context of Jones's life and her struggle, and never preaches. He lets the history--a history too seldom told--be revealed through the contours of Jones's life. Which leads to the third story: the story of American self-invention. Mary Jones invented herself, and went to great lengths to sustain an identity that would allow her, as a woman and a mother, to become one of the toughest and most feared labor organizers in American history--not a normal or accepted role for women, generally during her lifetime. Throughout these three stories, Gorn engages the notion of gender in late Victorian and early twentieth century US history. This, too, he does with a subtle hand and a light touch, totally without jargon. The book is thoroughly enjoyable, accessible to all readers, and interesting in its own right. Plus it sheds light on important processes in American history. I highly recommend it.

3 out of 5 stars Dry but informative.......2001-07-26

Mother Jones was a character of mythic proportions, created by the all-too-human Mary Harris Jones. The author takes the position that while many of the details of her life - as portrayed in Mother's speeches, writings and autobiography - are impossible to verify or demonstrably false, they stood for a larger truth.

Gorn obviously has sympathy for Jones and does a good job of putting her life in its context, but this book is no easy read. It is written in the dry verbiage and cadences of academia.

An unequivocally positive addition to the library of labor history, but don't try to read it at night before bed unless your aim is to hasten sleep.

I have enjoyed all of Ms. Rice, very similar of her "Midnight Series". Hero hiding his shared past from the heroine, taking and loving her, but also bring danger. Heroine delicate, but a fight/survior (I did tear a little at her story) strangely pulled to the hero.
If you like lot sex and overprotective males with a heart of gold of course you'll enjoy any of Ms. Rice books.
I do agree some type of epilogue about the couple would have been an added bonus, but still worth the price.

I've read only a few books in the "erotic romance/thriller" genres and found most of them to be pretty silly and not particularly well-written. This book is unlike most of what I read as you can see by looking at my reviews posted here. I won't sum up the plot again - I will just say two things:

1 - I read it non-stop and was fully entertained by a superbly crafted story

2 - I've just ordered 4 more of her books and hope they get here before I fly off on holiday!

This author is a real find and I am delighted to have found her!

    Book Description

Baroness Maria Ignatievna Zakrevskaya Benckendorff Budberg hailed from the Russian aristocracy and lived in the lap of luxury—until the Bolshevik Revolution forced her to live by her wits. Thereafter her existence was a story of connivance and stratagem, a succession of unlikely twists and turns. Intimately involved in the mysterious Lockhart affair, a conspiracy which almost brought down the fledgling Soviet state, mistress to Maxim Gorky and then to H.G. Wells, Moura was a woman of enormous energy, intelligence, and charm whose deepest passion was undoubtedly the mythologization of her own life.

Recognized as one of the great masters of Russian twentieth-century fiction, Nina Berberova here proves again that she is the unsurpassed chronicler of the lives of Soviet émigrés. In Moura Budberg, a woman who shrouded the facts of her life in fiction, Berberova finds the ideal material from which to craft a triumph of literary portraiture, a book as engaging and as full of life and incident as any one of her celebrated novels.

    Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Not quite the book I had hoped.......2005-09-28

Based on the book's description as "...a complex and compelling tale of political upheaval, espionage, sexual passion, and all the suffering wrought by war, poverty, oppression, and exile... told brilliantly with empathy and panache.", you might think this would be a fascinating read. But this book wasn't quite the read I thought it would be.

Berberova really needed a strong editor to help her tighten her writing. There were too many people mentioned and the story tended to take so many tangents into other people's lives, making it difficult to get a strong sense of who Moura was.

But you can get a sense of who Moura wasn't. She wasn't a great mom (but to her defense, that was probably the case of a lot of women in her situation), wasn't a great friend, and not too devoted to anyone except herself.

The repeated name dropping made the book frustrating as well. Whether they were in her life for a week or a decade, it seems that Berberova mentions everyone Moura ever met. The index in the back of the book was necessary just to help distinguish the characters as there is little way to keep them all straight.

5 out of 5 stars Over the Samovar.......2005-08-05

You've got to take this one in the right spirit. Berberova isn't a terribly good writer--discursive, disorganized, fatally susceptible to digression from almost any direction. Morever she doesn't seem particularly to like her subject--a failing perhaps more common among biographers than you might at first guess.

So, as biography, not a delight. But as conversation--my, this is wonderful. Stick with it a few pages and let yourself hear the voice: you get the sense that you are in her kitchen, beside the samover, while she rattles on conjuring up ghosts, settling old scores, and generally jabbing the ribs of a whole generation of Russian emigres and their friends.

The "Index of Names" at the end gives you some hint of what you are up against: some 60 pages, perhaps 600 names of all the people who wandered in and out of Moura's life, or cast a shadow over it. Who /did/ this index, anyway? It is a quirky marvel, not quite comprehensive but close enough that you want to keep it around for consultation in reading any number of other emigre works.

Oddly--okay, not so oddly--the dominant figures in this tumultuous cast are not the author herself but two of the men in her life: Maxim Gorky and H. G. Wells. And what a pair of gasbags they turn out to be: writers of moderate talent and immoderate self-enchantment, too blinded by the mirror to understand anything about the dreadful world they lived in. Wells once tried to lecture Stalin on the state of the world; Stalin wasn't interested. Gorki actually moved back from exile into Russia, convinced he could make a difference; he died (or was murdered) somewhat the wiser.

The Russians do seem to have a knack for memoir: think Herzen, think Nadezhda Mandelstam, think Trotsky's autobiography. In fairness, Berberova's memoir of Moura isn't a patch on any of these three, not in insight or imagination or literary skill. But it's its own self, and judged on its own terms, it makes a compulsive read.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Historical Christian Romance taking place in a restaurant near the Grand Canyon.......2007-06-21

If you enjoy reading love stories about Christians that take place in different time periods, than this is a book for you! It takes place in the mid 1800's. There are four short novellas in this one book. About 90 pages per story and it is real easy reading.

The first story is about this girl working at the Harvey restaurant, yet she seems to be in no need of money, or is she? She caught the manager's eye first because she was a lousy waitress, second because she was beautiful and helped him ti take care of his daughter. What is her reason for working there? What is she running from?

The second story invloves another waitress from the Harbey reataurant only that she witnesses an attempted train robbery and falls for the ranger on the train. She struggles with her love and the question of how can they live with their situation.

The third story is about a young girl who wants to provvide for her family. Except shedoesn't plan on doing it as a waitress, she is on the search for a wealthy man to come find her and take her away from the Harvey restaurant and marry her. The only problem is she fell in love with the one man who wasn't wealthy, or was he?

The fourth story is about this sad woman who keeps to herself and ran away from her husband, whom she is afraid of. His brother comes looking for her and wants her to come back to they family. Does he have his own reasons for this? What happends when she finds out the reasons she hasn't been feeling well? What will her husband do to her for running away? Why did she run away in the first place?

These novellas were all so enjoyable, but keep in mind if you don't want to read about faith, God, and salvation, these books aren't for you. They have Christian undertones, not sermons. But great sources of inspiration.
