Book Description

Doc Ford faces his greatest challenge ever, in the stunning new novel by the New York Times-bestselling writer.

Book after book, Randy Wayne White's audience and critical acclaim continue to grow. His most recent thriller, Dark Light, was "one of his brightest novels" (South Florida Sun Sentinel), "darkly marvelous" (Miami Herald), "a compelling readable tale in the justly celebrated Doc Ford series by one of this country's premier crime novelists" (Booklist). With Hunter's Moon, White is ready to take another giant leap.

On a foggy, tropic October night, the full moon burning through the mist, I stopped paddling when I heard unexpected voices. Muted whispers, neither English nor Spanish, the voices of men moving in stealth. They shouldn't have been here. I shouldn't have been here. There were plausible explanations, but I didn't like any of them.

When Ford saves from assassination a controversial former President of the United States who is staying on an island off Florida's west coast, he has no idea what he's just let himself in for. Kal Wilson knows that he has only a short time to live, and he has a full agenda. Just months before, his wife was killed in a plane crash while carrying medical supplies to Nicaragua - a tragic accident, everyone agreed, except Wilson is sure it was no accident, and he intends to do something about it. All he needs right now is someone to spring him loose from his security detail, keep him alive for two weeks, and then get him back. And that someone is Ford...whether he likes it or not....

Rich with passion and vivid, pungent prose and some of the best characters found in suspense fiction today, Hunter's Moon is White's most remarkable novel yet.

5 out of 5 stars Hunter's Moon.......2007-09-25

I have read every one of RWW's novels, and much of his non-fiction. At a booksigning once, someone asked him how he writes so much, and he countered (to that literary audience) with, "how COULDN'T you write if you have it in you?"
He is a certified character with a fascinatiing background. He is among the few writers I watch for new novels from and then read with gusto. He isn't far behind JK Rowling in my need to keep the story going.
I guess it's clear that I am a fan. THIS novel is the best he's produced in a long time, if not ever. He has wonderful character development, and has managed to keep his protagonists fresh. I loved Hunter's Moon.
I would recommend it highly.

4 out of 5 stars One of his best.......2007-08-18

I've been following Doc Ford's adventures for years and have enjoyed White's ability to create such a dynamic character. In Hunter's Moon, Ford gets the chance to confront yet another demon from his past- this time alongside an ex-president. While the plot may at first glance seem like a lot to tackle, in White's capable hands it is beautifully executed and the ending is spectacular. Whether new to the Doc Ford thrillers or a returning reader, Hunter's Moon is a must. This is truly one of his best.

1 out of 5 stars Avoid, Avoid, Avoid.......2007-07-28

Unless you enjoy books with ridiculous plots, characters that are undefined and absurd, and a story that doesn't begin to do what little it does until well into the book, don't buy this book. I'm not familiar with other books by the author, and given my opinions of this one, I cannot imagine finding out. Boy, is this a bad book.

3 out of 5 stars Not the Doc Ford That We Are Used To.......2007-07-25

I have read 12 of the 14 books in the series. Obviously, I love Doc Ford. But his character in this book is different. He leaves Dinkins Bay and his lab with not a look back. He does not long for the solitude of his work. He doesn't express any angst about killing.
If you are new to the Doc Ford series, do not make this your first book to read. Try Shark River or Tampa Burn first.

5 out of 5 stars Hunter's Moon.......2007-07-06

Ok R.W., you're back on track with this one. The extra work(rewrites, editing), is obvious in the polish of the finished book. And taking your time to write a proper ending, one that is deliberate but not a drag, is especially appreciated.

For fans who are new to Randy Wayne White's work, I envy you all the great reads you have in order to catch up on all of the adventures of Doc Ford and the zanies of Dinkin's bay. I've anchored my trawler in that bay(real name Tarpon Bay), many times and no one gets the flavor of those islands like White.

Anita Blake makes a living raising the dead. She also executes rogue vampires and villains among the local were-folk. Marks bind her to Jean-Claude, the Master vampire of St. Louis and her lover, and to her ex-fiancé, a powerful werewolf who heads up the local pack. Anita shares some of their magic, and her own power over the dead keeps growing. But so does the body count and the situations that force Anita to bend or break her own rules.

In Blue Moon, Anita's ex Richard is jailed in Tennessee, accused of rape. When Anita arrives with a lawyer and an entourage of vampires and 'weres' supplied by Jean-Claude, it's clear that something is rotten in Myerton. The local cops are corrupt, and the trolls Richard was studying are threatened. But if she sticks around to investigate, the local Master vampire will attack her and her friends. The local werewolf clan isn't rushing to welcome her either, and her self-control is going to the, um, wolves.

Blue Moon is the eighth book in Hamilton's Anita Blake: Vampire Hunter series; newcomers should start with earlier books. The protagonists' development and their relationships to each other and to the large cast of continuing secondary characters are what make these books so compelling. Be warned--there's steamy sex and graphic violence here, though Anita does reflect on her moral position. But if dark urban fantasy featuring those who hunt the night appeals, pounce on this series. --Nona Vero

3 out of 5 stars Super Reader.......2007-08-26

Anita discovers it is tricky to have all those supernatural powers and supernatural leadership responsibilities. So much so, she has to get lessons from others, and help from a witch to deal with some of it before she is overwhelmed.

Throw in werewolf shagging and her having to deal with the jealousy of the situation with Richard, who reckons if she can do whoever, so can he. He, of course, has some hot wolf girls after him, considering he is the boss.

1 out of 5 stars shallow.......2007-08-19

I was terribly disappointed with this book.
Introduction of all type of vague monster lore that culminates to nothing.
Plot development is weak.
Constant sexual inuendo that serves no purpose.
So much sexual reference it totally distracts from any plot development.
Painful to read.

3 out of 5 stars The end is nigh..........2007-02-28

Ah for those innocent days when this series still had potential and we didn't know what was coming next. Back when Blue Moon was released things still looked good, we had the possibilities of a true Triumvirate of Power being formed to look forward to, we saw Richard stand up to Anita and set terms for their relationship, well before his unexpected and poorly written meltdown in later books. The book still had a plot and a purpose back then.

What a shame it wouldn't last.

Blue Moon is the last book in what was the original series. Though many fans will tell you the next book Obsidian Butterfly is still good, Blue Moon is the last book when all the real characters where on the page together, even if only in spirit. It was the last book that had any real emotion to it, any real zip. It was the last book before Hamilton began retroactively changing her series into something unrecognizable. Blue Moon is the last book that suggests there is a positive future ahead for Anita, Richard and Jean Claude. Blue Moon is the last book most people should ever read in this series.

Blue Moon takes Anita out of town, out of her element. Richard has been arrested for rape, and Anita in usual fashion doesn't believe he can get himself out of trouble and so against Jean Claude's wishes rushes off to save him. Corrupt cops, a demon summoning wizard, a rival Master vampire, a ghost from the past and werewolf pack politics drives the last real Anita Blake Vampire Hunter story, and once upon a time it was good. There's plot, purpose, action, character development, sex that was still fresh and new, and even a Richard who can stand up to Anita without coming across as a jerk.

But the writing is as they say on the wall; looking back many of the flaws that would so cripple the last books Hamilton has released are there in larval form, just waiting to chew their way maggot like through the writing. Dropped plot threads, shifting details, grammatical weaknesses, and an over abundance of re-used lines fill the book, but at least the editor at the time could catch basic spelling mistakes unlike now.

4 out of 5 stars Still Great.......2006-12-04

I very much enjoyed Blue Moon. This book focused on the relationship between Richard and Anita. They've been at war of sorts since Anita left him for Jean Claude.

In Blue Moon, Anita is forced to face Richard and how she really feels about him. At this point the books are REALLY focusing on sex a great deal. It seems a little overboard but the storyline is still great for the series.

4 out of 5 stars When the good little Boy Scout gets into trouble...it's Anita Blake to the rescue!.......2006-11-18

Just when she thought that things couldn't get any more complicated, Anita receives a call from Richard's brother telling her that her ex-fiancé is in jail for allegedly raping a woman. To make matters worse, it is only a few days from full moon and if Richard's real identity is revealed, all hope of ever getting him out of prison will be lost. And so with vampires and lycanthropes in tow, Anita heads to Tennessee to rescue the werewolf king. However, things take a turn for the worse when the local Master of the City accuses them of trying to dethrone him. To add to the problem, Anita is feeling the burden of her ever-growing powers and the responsibility of being werewolf Lupa and were-leopard Nimir-Ra.

As part of the powerful triumvirate, Anita is finding out more and more each day that her power comes at a heavy price. Everyone wants a piece of her; her newly-adopted wereleopards are becoming more dependent on her, the werewolves want her to act like a real lupa, but the scariest of all is the vengeful spirit that is intent on possessing her--that of Raina's. Having discovered her power to control the call of the munin, it appears that Anita has one more lesson to learn, that of controlling the munin that calls to her from beyond. She either rides it or let it ride her, in which case she could very well lose her sanity. As if worrying about her love life isn't enough to lose her sanity over...

When Hamilton took a different spin by forming the triumvirate between Anita, Jean-Claude and Richard, it was also the start of Anita's invincibility. It was pretty much like we knew that she could handle everything that came her way. So how do you make her more human like she was at the start of the series? Make her vulnerable. And that's what the author does in BLUE MOON. In this book, we see Anita's struggle to accept her powers and deal with her fears that she is becoming the very thing that she used to annihilate without a second thought--a monster.

But moral dilemma aside, BLUE MOON keeps the horror going and also takes on a kinky aspect (as what happens at the lupanar). We knew that sexually things would eventually progress between Anita and Richard; it was simply a question of when. Beware: this isn't a stand-alone book, don't start with this one if you haven't read any of the earlier books.

Book Description

Susan Michaels was the hottest reporter on the Beltway Beat until she walked into a setup that ruined her reputation. Now she’s working for a small Seattle paper, penning stories about killer moths and alien babies, convinced that her life couldn’t get any worse…

That was before an idea for a breaking news piece brought her to a local animal shelter where she ends up listening to her source rant about vampires and gets coerced into adopting a cat despite her allergies. But when her new pet suddenly reveals himself to be a gorgeous—and lethal—shapeshifter, Susan realizes that there’s far more at stake than a career-saving by-line.

Born into a world of predators, Were-Hunter Ravyn Kontis was betrayed by those he loved best. Soulless, pitiless, he has spent three hundred years battling the Daimons who seek to subjugate humankind. Against all odds, Susan evokes in Ravyn feelings of tenderness. Desire. Love. And with the ultimate battle about to begin, this one very human woman holds the power to shatter both their worlds...

2 out of 5 stars The "weakest link" in the series.......2007-09-28

I love the Dark Hunters and have enjoyed learning about the world that SK has created. There have been some good books and some outstanding books in the series, but this one has been my least favorite. First of all, it was not written well and seemed to be thrown together. There were certain things that were repetitive. The characters were not well developed, and like another reviewer said, Susan was just way too sarcastic. I did not feel any empathy for her at all. I like the sexy scenes as much as other fans, but the scenes in this book were bordering on the ridiculous. It's pretty telling, when some of my favorite characters in the book were the bad guys! Please write a better one next time, Sherrilyn. I'm still a big fan and will forgive you this one.

4 out of 5 stars Loved this book.......2007-07-12

I picked this up randomly in a library while shopping for something else. I am an avid reader, and I just couldn't put this book down. Other D-H's fans may be disappointed, but since this is the first of the series I read, it sent me running to read the others.
Heros are likable, even if some of them have flaws... as everything else, it's not perfect (as I am sure, not meant to be). Some people will like/love it, others won't.
As for me, I just had a great time reading it.

2 out of 5 stars No Anne Rice here.......2007-06-15

I've read Anne Rice, and loved it. I don't love this. This is a combination of romance novel (which I don't enjoy in general) and fantasy/occult which I often like quite a bit. Perhaps it's not fair of me to review this book because I don't as a rule like romances. But I was willing to give it a shot, and I'm sorry. The characters were unbelievable, their "Rules" of engagment were just silly (e.g. immortal killer beasts cannot enter a home without an invitation), and there were many inconsistencies (e.g. Ravyn's bullet holes heal in a matter of hours, but he still has blisters on his hands or bruises on his neck long afterwards).
I enjoyed the sarcasm of Susan, though.

3 out of 5 stars She has something here, but..........2007-06-15

I bought it when it came out in hardcover because I was still a loyal--if closeted--DH fan. Even though that loyalty is waning, I have to give props to Sherrilyn Kenyon for this book, which serves a few purposes.

The first is to give you a mix of her two genres: Dark-Hunter and Were-Hunter. I'll spare you the story of those and begin by telling you that our hero, Ravyn Kontis, is both, which makes him special (he kills vampires and can turn into a leopard or a cat) but hated by his family. The prologue says he's lethal and would kill anyone in a heartbeat-- and yet this is never seen.

In fact, he warms up quickly to this reporter named Susan Michaels, who works for a tabloid paper but is seeking the chance to get her fame back. So these two meet after one of her friends asks to pick up a cat (Ravyn) even though she's allergic to them, and she's attacked by his enemies. She's pulled into the Dark-Hunter world, becomes infatuated with Ravyn (and vice versa. I'm still waiting for him to take people down).

This is a nice effort on Kenyon's part. She has a tortured hero (got to have one in her books) who doesn't let the tortured part bother him. What? I know, I'm shocked too. And even though the heroine is only two dimensional, she's an okay person.

BUT...

Like the other readers say, WHAT THE BLEEP DID SHE DO TO ACHERON? I was so in love with that mysterious, wonderful man and she reduces him down to a sex slave for Artemis. I have to put the book down for a bit and vent out my frustration. This isn't the guy I love. I'm left with a depressing piece of fluff.

And Nick. My sweet Southern boy just does something so despicable because he wants to show Ash who's boss, and I have to shake my head.

Even though there are some disappointing elements in this book, I must admit I liked it the story (when it wasn't being disappointing). Sherrilyn Kenyon still has a long way to go before she finds writing perfection, but she'll get there one day.

In the meantime, I'll wait until Ash and Nick become the characters I rememeber them to be, and for Ravyn to kill someone because he can.

1 out of 5 stars i thought it was a gag.......2007-06-13

disclaimer: i dont buy romance novels. i have read all of anne rice's books though and bought this in amsterdam airport with 6 hours to spare. after the first chapter, i continued reading because it was so bad i thought it must have been some kind of a gag. after the second chapter i was just caught like a deer in headlights until making it to the end where i left it on the bookshelf of an Italian beach resort in Zanzibar. it's the worst novel i can remember reading. i read at least a book a week and buy lots of random authors to see whats out there and i've never been this disappointed. if this is all it takes to be a novelist im definitely giving it a shot.

I really enjoyed this book. I"ve read all of Laurell Hamiltons books and am now starting on MaryJanice Davidson. I was disappointed to find that there was no continuation of the other two writers characters as I found them to be very interesting and would have liked to read more about them.

I loved the book. The stories were well writtin. I have the complete set of Anita Blake series by Ms. Hamilton, so I knew her story would be great. The other 3 stories were great as well.

4 out of 5 stars Three All-Stars and one Bench Warmer.......2006-10-16

Great read! Three wonderful authors: MaryJanice Davidson, Eileen Wilks and Rebecca York. Also, the late great Laurell K. Hamilton whose name alone used to make us want to pick up the book. Alas, that is so not the case anymore.

In "Dead Girls Don't Dance" (MaryJanice Davidson) you have a young vampire who has just run into the man of her teenage dreams. It's cute, funny, you fall in love with the folks in this story. I want to see more of Ms. Andrea Mercer. I hope she writes another story about her.

"Originally Human" (Eileen Wilks) is a bit different. Once again we have characters we can identify with and like. A very likeable Molly finds an injured man and tries to help. Not much of a hook but I don't want to give away the surprises in this very good story.

"Burning Moon" (Rebecca York) has a werewolf tracking his wife's killer and finding a lot more than he bargained for. Some good (new) werewolf family information. This is another one I hope with be continued.

Oh, let's face it: all three of these stories (especially the first two) are just so darn good you don't want them to end. I truly hope the authors read this review some day and it encourages them to write more on the characters. I just loved 'em all.

Guess I should say something about Hamilton's "Blood Upon My Lips". Let's see, it's the new and extremely UNimproved Anita Blake wanting to have sex. (Yawn) Oh wait. When DOESN'T the new and UNimproved Anita Blake want to have sex? With anybody. Or anything. Lordy, the family pets won't be safe if this keeps up. "Hide the collie, maw, that freak Blake is hanging around outside again." If Hamilton insists on Blake screwing ANYthing available I wish she'd be a little quieter about it. The constant screaming has got to be getting on everyone's nerves. It's certainly getting on mine. Oh, and if there are any of the OLD Blake fans out there -- you remember Anita Blake VAMPIRE HUNTER? Well, that Blake died a couple of books ago and some unattractive, whiney, Valley girl from Hell has taken her place.

Please God. Let "Edward" show up fully armed and take us all out of our misery. Also, make sure he shoots first and asks questions later. If not, the Valley Girl will certainly attempt to molest him and anyone he has with him. Where the heck is Otto when you need him?

Finally, yes buy or borrow the book. It is well worth it. Just skip the first story and enjoy yourself with the remaining three.

At Taiga Lodge, George Perry's exclusive big-game hunting camp 125 miles northeast of Anchorage, Alaska, the price of admission has a unique flavor. "The charges depend on the customer's attitude," George tells Kate Shugak, who's working as one of his assistant guides. "The more they piss me off, the higher the price." Which means the party of German computer executives that Kate and her colleagues are looking after will be lucky to go home with any money at all. More interested in firing off their expensive guns than in the sport of hunting moose, these guys are a danger to themselves and anyone else within range. But when human bodies start to outnumber moose-head trophies, the resourceful Aleut Indian Kate realizes that the deaths have more to do with financial and moral crimes back home in Germany than accidents in Alaska.

Hunter's Moon, Dana Stabenow's ninth installment in the excellent Kate Shugak series, is enriched with the intricate details of everyday Alaskan life. The author follows the lives of ordinary people as they try to survive the harshly majestic environment as best they can. She shows how people can be tempered and improved by the rugged country, or bent by it to the breaking point. Kate herself might occasionally acquire the mythic proportions of a fictional heroine, but she also embodies the pain and human frailty that make her instantly recognizable as one of us, no matter where we live. --Dick Adler

Book Description

A corporate hunting retreat turns into a deadly game of cat and mouse in this latest addition to the Kate Shugak series.

"With eight Shugak mysteries under her belt, Stabenow is rapidly emerging as one of the strongest voices in crime fiction in the vast expanse of Alaska," wrote The Seattle Times of last year's Killing Grounds. With Hunter's Moon, the unstoppable Kate Shugak guides a hunting expedition gone horribly wrong.

It's September and the height of hunting season in the bush. Experienced hunter Kate and her boyfriend, Jack, volunteer to help out their friend and big-game outfitter George Perry with a hunting trip. But while they kill to pack their freezers, this wealthy group of German computer executives wants trophies to hang on their walls. The conflict of interest doesn't end there; used to pampering, the group has a style that clashes with Kate's self-sufficient ways.

After successfully bagging a moose with two of her charges, Kate returns to camp to learn that a hunter has been shot. It appears to be an accident, until the body of a second hunter is discovered in even more gruesome circumstances. With no shortage of potential suspects, Kate realizes the moose and the bears aren't the only animals being hunted in the bush.

In a plot that combines elements of Agatha Christie's And Then There Were None and Richard Connell's The Most Dangerous Game, in a setting as perilous as it is beautiful, with a cast of characters as rich and full as any in detective fiction today, Dana Stabenow weaves a story that will test the limits of Kate's strength, ingenuity, and determination, and will ultimately change the course of her life forever.

4 out of 5 stars Surprising, to say the least.......2000-10-19

Everybody keeps saying horrible things about this book, and if you asked me what I thought right after reading it, I would have agreed. However, looking back a few months later, I realize that this is a prime example of what happens when bad things happen to good people. It's a test of Kate Shugak's character - will she snap under the trauma of losing the only person she's grown to trust, or will our heroine somehow find a way to pick herself up and carry on? Though I don't believe this is one of Dana Stabenow's better ones, I think that rather than shaking off a loyal Shugak fan, this book has hooked me more firmly. I hate the fact that Jack died, but I can't bear to leave Kate dangling, not knowing if/how she copes. I also can't bear the fact that somebody got to my library's copy of Midnight Come Again before I did. ^_^

2 out of 5 stars Disappointed Kate fan.......1999-12-31

As a Kate fan, I was very disappointed with this book. The author resorted to blatant stereotyping to force her plot, and as a result, I found her normal small errors about firearms, airplanes, and bush Alaska more annoying than usual. Ms. Stabenow has obviously never met a true German big game hunter, considered by many to be among the most ethical of hunters and respectful of the game they shoot.

5 out of 5 stars Powerful, moving, but first read Stabenow's others..........1999-11-23

This is a powerful and moving book about Kate and the ones she loves. To get the full impact of this latest book, though, a reader should read the previous books in this Alaskan series. I give the author credit for having the courage to "challenge" the reader and Kate to survive the surprising ending. Afterall, if we live long enough, we will all have unbelieveable joy and tragedy in our lives...it is what either defines us or "kills" us. Personally, I cannot wait for the next in this series to see how Kate "moves on" with her life!

4 out of 5 stars Good book but, hard tense and shocking to kate fans........1999-09-04

I love kate and mutt books. This book is good but missed the friends and family I have come to expect and care about. I am in denial about the hard ending and can only look forward to book 10 to unfold the new direction Kate will take. The exerpt, found on dana's website is reassuring, and tantalizing. I wait on tenterhooks.

3 out of 5 stars Not her best, didn't leave me waiting for the next title........1999-08-11

Thought this plot bordered on being 'over the top' in relation to the earlier titles that had cumulatively developed the main characters into people you cared about. This also took away from her usually excellent descriptions of Alaskan settings, folklore and characters. For the first time I'm not waiting impatiently for the next in the series. The ending was a real cop-out. Can't strong women characters also handle strong, mature relationships with males? It seems not, my other favorite Alaskan author, Sue Henry, took a similar detour at the end of her new title. This is a trend I could do without.

4 out of 5 stars A Good Read.......2007-08-15

Leigh was once a Kindergarten teacher and now turned werewolf hunter...(don't laugh)

She meets and teams up with Damien Fitzgerald. He's kinda strange and there's a reason for that....

This book was a nice read. Brings on a new twist to the werewolf world, that's for sure. LOL

5 out of 5 stars Exciting and Sexy!.......2007-06-01

I liked this book as much, if not more than the first one of the series! I LOVED the relationship between Leigh and Jessie!! I also enjoyed the steamy electricity between Leigh and Nic. Great read!

4 out of 5 stars Great book!.......2007-05-09

I thought this was a great book! I love the fact the Lori writes the book in the first person. I felt like I was in the story and not just listening to one. I couldn't put the book down!

4 out of 5 stars Not as Good as some of the others, but still a good read!.......2006-08-19

Meet Leigh, a newly indoctrinated Jager-Sucher, who has dedicated her life to tracking down and killing werewolves. Several years ago, a pack of wolves attacked and killed her family and fiance', and she fears that she can never love again. Did I mention she suspects that the man (Hector)that she had an affair with was really the wolf that killed her entire family?...talk about guilt. Well, while seeking answers and "wolf" busting (much like ghostbusting), she travels to Wisconsin and runs across a handsome stranger, Damien. While she tries not to question her attraction to the handsome stranger, a maniac is trying to consumate their relationship during the Hunter's Moon. Read it and you will enjoy it.

4 out of 5 stars Better Than I First Thought.......2006-02-09

I started reading this book and thought... Oh, Great, this is the same as the first book in the series only the names have changed. I had a STRONG feeling of having read this before. Anyway I hung in there and was not disappointed. Not only did this book have a completely different story line, it brought back the charters from the first book and ended up better than its predecessor. Really an awesome story, if you have not discovered these books yet, I feel sorry for ya.

An Irish Canadian author's lauded fairy fantasies are updated and introduced to U.S. fantasy readers for the first time in O.R. Melling's Chronicles of Faerie. The first volume, The Hunter's Moon, follows two cousins, Gwen and Findabhair, as they backpack around Ireland in search of the country's magical past. But the girls go too far when they dare to spend the night in a known fairy mound. Finn is stolen away by the dark king of Faerie to become his bride sacrifice to the Great Worm, or Hunter. It is up to timid Gwen to rescue her intrepid cousin, and she wonders if the task will be too much the first time she catches a glimpse of the Little People at play. "Gwen quaked inside. This wild abandon…was beyond anything she could imagine…Exquisite chaos." But with the help of a fairy doctress and her handsome grandson, Gwen assembles a rag tag team of heroes determined to bring Finn back -- even if it means the destruction of Faerie itself.

Melling's scholarship is evident. In fact, some readers may wonder why she just didn't write a nonfiction book about Ireland's rich folklore, as her characters often step clumsily out of the narrative to spout a factual, yet hyperbolic speech about a particular cave, lake or legendary creature. But while Melling's writing is less successful when her characters are on this side of the Veil, her descriptions of Fairie are sweeping and romantic. Fans of writers like Midori Snyder or Clare Dunkle are sure to enjoy them. (Ages 10-15) --Jennifer Hubert

Book Description

Finally available in the U.S., this Canadian bestseller is a romantic and atmospheric tale of two teenage girls caught in the world of Faerie.

When she arrives in Ireland to visit her cousin Findabhair, American Gwen expects a fun backpacking trip to sites of the fairy lore they're both fascinated with. What neither cousin knows is that it's the summer of the Hunter's Moon, a dangerous time for mortals to meddle in the kingdom of Faerie. The girls camp out, and deep in the night Finn is kidnapped by the handsome Faerie king! In Gwen's quest to save her cousin, across beautifully evoked settings of modern-day and mystical Ireland, the spunky heroine's biggest challenge may be convincing Finn she needs to be saved! This is the first in a much-lauded and best-selling series from Canada by O.R. Melling, praised as "great stuff, beautifully told" by the Toronto Sun. It's been updated and expanded and is perfect for teen girls who like the work of Anne Rice, Holly Black, and Annette Curtis Klause.

3 out of 5 stars Enjoyable... for a Tween or Young Teenager.......2007-07-28

While I enjoyed some of the moments of the book, the flow seemed awkward and there were times when I felt the characters were a little too one dimensional and contrived.

Once I was finished reading the book, I gifted it to a girl who attends the same ballet school as my daughter. She later said she absolutely loved the book. Perhaps the teenage girls in the book were more "realistic" to a twelve-year-old than a thirty-something-year-old. Or maybe free books just read better than $8 books do.

Overall, good brain candy for a quicky read and an interesting and fun look into the world of the fae, but nothing that drove me to wanting to read more of the Chronicles of Faerie books.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting start, but feels incomplete, like it's just the author's draft copy..........2007-02-17

The idea of "The Hunter's Moon" is that two cousins age 16), one Irish and the other Irish American with a shared love for folk lore are meeting up for the first time in years to back pack Ireland. During thier back backing the more rextroverted one is kidnapped by the fairy king and her cousin sets out to save her, despite her wishes. What follows is a endless tireless account of her journey (predictable in her personal changes: she steps out of her shell and learns to accept herself) and Celtic mythology.

As an Irish American teenager who traveled to Ireland last year, the book was extremely amusing to read with the constant references to tourist atttractions in Dublin, Irish music by Dropkick Muprheys and so forth. The mentions of Irish landmarks like the Hills of Tara and various other locations were fun and the portrayal of Irish culture were certainly interesting to read about (though the wide spread use of hitchhiking as transportation is disturbing...)

The characters were interesting to read about, but weren't exactly believeble (the romance between Finn and the fairy king seems forced and false, but we're meant to belive that it's true love; the relationship between Gwen and her leading man is similar). Furthurmore, I felt that the characters had the potential for me to identify with them, but the author's failure to give them any kind of past (Siblings? Gwen's home city? Childhood? Even a disticnt age?) detracts majorly.

However, my problems with the book is that up to the last quater of it, the time line didn't flow very well. The events occurring (another interaction with the fairy, another friendly stranger) could be the climax or an introduction: the styles and writing were extremely similar. Also, I had trouble decided if the characters were stereotypes or jsut actually how the Irish were. The beautifully handsome fairy king, wise woman with history, spunky Irish teenager with fantasy obsession.

5 out of 5 stars Compelling and beautifully written novel for any age.......2007-01-17

Two cousins from two different parts of the world who share the same name and a passionate belief that faery exists, set out on a summer vacation in Ireland. Gwen, the US cousin, is tentative and dreamy. Findabhair, the Irish native, is passionate, beautiful and impulsive.

At Tara, they dare to spend the night in a Faery mound. Finn answers the call of the Faery King. Gwen is left behind to rescue her.

Time is running out--Hunter's Moon approaches and if Gwen can't get her cousin back, Finn will become the annual sacrifice to the Great Wyrm.

"The Hunter's Moon" is an amazing fantasy adventure told by someone who really KNOWS Irish folklore. Melling's education qualifies her to write non-fiction, yet she's choosing instead to educate us with enchanting tales of Irish folklore.

I highly recommend "The Hunter's Moon" for fantasy lovers of all ages. The story itself is delightful. The guides included relating to Gaelic language and Irish folklore are amazing.

4 out of 5 stars A well-written, entertaining, novel.......2005-09-01

I really enjoyed O.R. Melling's novel. It's a fun coming-of-age adventure in which the main character, Gwen, develops her own strength and learns how to outwit the fairies. At first she is overshadowed by her beautiful cousin Findabhair. But when her cousin is kidnapped, Gwen must go on a quest throughout Ireland to recue her. Melling does an excellent job weaving in traditional fairy myth with beautiful descriptions of modern-day Ireland. Though the plot is thin in places I found the novel as a whole to be entertaining and enjoyable.

4 out of 5 stars Predictable, but entertaining all the same..........2005-07-03

'The Hunter's Moon' has an interesting enough plot-an Irish girl is stolen by the faeries, and her visiting cousin must save her. This book is somewhat educational, providing the reader with interesting info on Ireland. O.R. Melling, according to the 'About the Author' thingy on the flap, was born in Ireland and studied Irish history.
Anyway, back to the story. I especially like the characters...the heroine, Gwen, is by no means perfect. She's short, slightly overweight, and has an *interesting* personality. The faerie king is the kind of person you're unsure about, not knowing whether he's good or evil.
One thing I didn't like about this book was the plot itself was extremely predictable. I won't say much, so not to reveal the ending, but let me just say you know exactly who's going to fall in love with who(the summary on the front flap gave most of that away...), and you pretty much know how it's going to end, or at least close to it. This book occasionally got boring, but I noticed after I read it that the only times it was boring was when the faeries weren't around, heh heh.
All in all I think this is a wonderful choice for fantasy lovers, or people who are interested in Ireland. Although it's a predictable sort of fairy tale, it serves as an enjoyable read.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars It didn't like the characters..............2005-07-11

This was my second novel of Robard's and I was disappointed. I read Dark of the Moon earlier in the week and I was knocked off my feet. Granted, that was a historical romance, I had high hopes for this one. :(

Unfortunately, I couldn't care less about the story surrounding the horses. First Will was investigating an illegal betting scheme, then there were some mysterious horse slashings, a murder, and then a kidnapping? The plot was all over the place and I didn't feel as though any one aspect was developing, except the romance between Will and Molly.

The romance between Will and Molly was, in a word ~ awkward. What on earth did Will see in her? Also, why was he jealous of her sleazy boyfriend, Jimmy? His behavior (considering his age) was ridiculous. I thought they were mis-matched from the get-go and I never felt they belonged together.

When I like an author I read the good and the bad. Hopefully I happened upon a bad one, I will give Robard another try based on Dark of the Moon. :)

4 out of 5 stars A page-turning romance!.......2005-07-07

This was my second Karen Robards book and it was just as good as the first one I read, Bait. I'm such a sucker for these books. A good steamy romance is just the thing to occupy a hot summer day. I enjoy these more than just a traditional romance though because as seen in this book, it is not only about the relationship between Will and Molly, it also has a good mystery and plenty of surprises. The conversations between Will and Molly were so well-written and entertaining. I'm ready for another book by Robards!

4 out of 5 stars One of Robards' Best - Some great story telling.......2003-01-07

Will Lyman, an agent with the FBI, has been sent to Kentucky to investigate some questionable winnings at the horse tracks. Just when he believes he is tying up the case as they watch for the criminal to pick up their $5,000 bait money, a beautiful woman appears in the barn, looks into the sack that contains the money, and then picks it up and walks off. Will is close to speechless. How could such an easy assignment go so wrong and who was that woman?

Molly Ballard has just quit her job as groomer at the Kentucky stable and has come to pick up her final check. She accidentally finds the bait money and on a whim - takes it! She is beside herself with worry but is totally broke and she is responsible for the care of her four younger siblings. She is sure that no one saw her take the money and figures it is money that was earned illegally anyway. Within hours, a gorgeous man in a distinguished suit appears at her door sporting a FBI bag and a tape of her taking the bait money.

Will Lyman takes in the young lady's surroundings and determines that she is probably just plain desperate. She lives in a very run down home and is barely surviving financially as she takes care of her two brothers and two sisters. He decides to let her off the hook and not charge her with theft. Then he discovers that his informant has died and returns to asks (really demands) Molly to participate in the sting operation. To enable easy communication during the sting, Will acts the role of her boyfriend.

This was a really good, enjoyable story. Karen Robards can write some good male leads and I believe Will Lyman is one of her best yet. You just like being around this guy. It was a stretch for me to accept that he is fifteen years older than Molly. He has an eighteen-year-old son and it doesn't seem to fit with his other personality traits that he would be attracted to someone so much younger than himself. Molly is supposed to be a really kind person but she treats others with disdain more than kindness. She is protective and loving towards her siblings under her care but she is also quite prickly.

Eventually Will and Molly develop an attraction to each other that neither has pursued but cannot ignore. He is pure sophistication, from Chicago, and apparently lives the good life. Molly has only a high school education, is actually poor, and has never had any real advantages in her life. She has not been exposed to many refinements but is basically a good, hard working person. Her prickly nature is due to many hardships as she grew up.

I was engrossed in this story until half way through the book. Robards had managed to write a fresh story that was interesting on every page. Then, without warning, the author introduces one of the most overused, maddening romance novel plot lines. I just had to put the book down for a while. I felt betrayed. Molly discovers that she loves Will and realizes that there is no future for them. She decides the best way to handle her newly found feelings is to treat him with hate. She kicks into high hateful gear, treating Will with a huge amount of disdain when he has done nothing wrong, and doesn't speak to him unless it is with meanness. This "I love you so I must treat you as I hate you" is one of my least favorite things about romance writing. Fortunately, Will does not accept this treatment from her and ignores her. He has recognized her game and will not play into it. This contrived misunderstanding is the turning point of the book. Although I did not appreciate this particular turn of events, I kept reading and, with relief, found this situation did not drag on for long. This is the reason for a four star rating rather than a five star.

The story is actually very tender. There are only a couple of sensual scenes and they rate no more than a three out of five (see More About Me for rating guidelines). The story does not need any more sensual pages - it is just right for the framework of the book.

Although the heroine stretches the limits of realism more than once, it is a book that I would read again some day. After all, romance writing is not very realistic. How could we depend on those happy endings if it were not? It is a pleasurable read with some degree of depth. I could actually read two more books with this hero starting today!

4 out of 5 stars A new author for me to explore ..........2002-11-08

This is a fun book for me to read ~~ I think I found it at a library booksale and it was a quick and fun read. It is a mystery/romance novel ~~ the first Robards book I have ever read.

Molly Ballard, working as a groomer at a Kentucky stable while raising her younger brothers and sisters, runs into trouble with the law when she spirits away $5,000 that the FBI had planted in one of the barns. She was planning to use the money to feed her brothers and sisters, but FBI agent Will Lyman thought otherwise. Once he realized that she was speaking the truth, he decided to use Molly as an insider to investigate a race-horsing fixing scheme. Only Lyman got more than he bargained for ~~ not only was he focusing on the race-horsing fixing scheme, there were horse mulitations happening, a unsolved murder case, and a suicide in the peaceful Kentucky countryside. And falling in love with Molly ~~ it all provides entertainment and mystery throughout the book.

I would have given this book a 5 if it weren't for some explicit sex scenes in the book ~~ I am one of the readers who likes to be teased, not told of every sexual act in the story. Must be the midwestern in me. Other than that, this book provides great entertainment for me ~~ a fast read, which is something I need around here in a house full of happenings and it's fun to read as well.

If I run across Robards' other books, I'll be sure to pick them up since I enjoyed this book. She is a new author for me to explore and this book is hard to put down. I don't regret picking this one up at all.

3 out of 5 stars Not one of Robard's best.......2002-07-26

I'm beginning to think that Karen Robard's would be a lot better off sticking to historical fiction. This is the fourth contemporary romance that I've read of hers (the others were To Love a Man and Wild Orchids--both horrible and One Summer, not bad), and while it's better than most of the other contemporaries of hers that I've read, it's still disappointing. It seems that in all of her contemporary romances that I've read so far, one of the protagonists (i.e., either the hero or heroine) is nauseatingly desperate. In To Love a Man and Wild Orchids, it's the heroine. In Hunter's Moon, it's the hero. Even after receiving insult after insult from the heroine (e.g., he's "old" and "stuffy") and having to put up with her immature romantic games (e.g., necking in the car & receiving a hickey from a date because she knows Will is in her house and waiting for her), he stills falls in "love" with her. The thing is, Robards doesn't really give readers a reason for the hero falling in love with the heroine. By reading it, you can easily see why he falls in lust with her (she's drop-dead gorgeous), but I can't think of anything in her personality that would make him fall in love with her. I got sick and tired of the heroine constantly making the hero jealous by accepting dates with other men. Also, Robards didn't develop the hero's character enough. Although Will reveals that he is a widower with an 18-year-old son, readers are privy to very little about his feelings over his deceased wife or his relationship with his son.

Overall, the hero is undeveloped and his desperate fixation with Molly makes you want to shake him and wish he'd wake up and find someone more deserving of his love than Molly.

5 out of 5 stars Great Love Story!.......2006-11-06

Well the same 4 authors do it again in another 4 part series beginning with Bobbi Smiths Hunters Moon. Again there are family serets and a family torn apart by the secrets. Thankfully you get a wonderful love story out of the books. Brent Hunter meets and falls in love with Crystal Stewart who sings in a saloon and uses the name Rudy. Very entertaining.

4 out of 5 stars Good story and characters. A bit "high school" style........2004-01-23

The writing style threw me on this one. I felt like I as reading a teen romance novel. However, the story line is good. The characters are likable.

The story has a mountain of romance, but not enough tension to balance it. There is a nemesis, but he is not given much time to keep you on the edge of your seat. The scenes that are exciting don't last long.

It's a quick and easy read. Sweet story. Not the most exciting. The love scenes are very mild. I'd say this is a safe one to pass on to your teen daughter.

5 out of 5 stars Bobbi Smith made me lose sleep!.......2003-08-18

Bobbi Smith made me lose sleep! Her latest novel (which is first in a series) is too good to put down. I quickly got caught up in the tale of Brent and Crystal. They are very realistic characters. Bobbi's writing is fast-paced, yet doesn't leave holes in the story. She left a lot of threads for the future writers to pick up, and I hope they do half a good a job as what Bobbi did!

5 out of 5 stars Brent and Crystal-SPOILERS.......2003-08-13

Favorite scene with Crystal-
The attack in the cabin.

Favorite scene with Brent-
Edmund pulling the gun on Brent.

Together-
Crystal being robbed.

What did you like about Crystal-
Her spunk and her strength. Her kindness towards Jack.

What didn't you like about Crystal-
Running from the law. She should have confessed.

What did you like about Brent-
Protecting Crystal and working hard for his family and home.

What didn't you like about Brent-
Giving up easily on his father and brothers.

5 out of 5 stars Good Beginning to the Series!.......2003-07-29

After the death of his mother, Brent Hunter must take over control of the family ranch because his father, convicted of murder, must spend 10 years in jail. After discovering that the family ranch was deeply in debt, Brent sets off to take care of paying off the debt.

In an attempt to gain more money for the ranch, Brent travel to a fort in order to obtain a government contract for horses. Unable to secure the contract, Brent steps into a saloon for a drink. Once there, he hears one of the best singers, a dance-hall girl named Opal.

"Opal" a/k/a Crystal, is running. She changes her name and hair color often, in an attempt to stay ahead of the brother she believes betrayed her. After a brief meeting with Brent, she is taken by his charm, but realizes that she has to move on, she puts him from her mind.

HUNTER'S MOON begins the Hunter clan story strong. Brent and Crystal's love develops well, under the artistic hand of Bobbi Smith. I look forward to the other books in the series.

Book Description

Experienced hunter Kate Shugak and her boyfriend volunteer to help out their friend and big-game outfitter George Perry with a hunting trip. The would be hunters are a wealthy group of German computer executives who blaze away at every moving target. After successfully bagging a moose with two of her charges, Kate returns to camp to learn that a hunter has been shot. It appears to be an accident, until the body of a second hunter is discovered. With no shortage of potential suspects, Kate realizes the moose and the bears aren't the only animals being hunted in the bush.

5 out of 5 stars Superb.......2005-09-29

Of all the Kate Shugak novels, this one stands above. Dana Stabenow takes a huge risk in killing a sympathetic character, but it's one that sets Kate up for the significant development she undergoes in subsequent books. Wrenching, emotional, harsh, superb. Dana's talent shines.

4 out of 5 stars I knew the ending already.........2005-02-24

People on previous reviews let it slip, but that didn't make me not want to read this book. I have enjoyed the series, and I even liked this book, sad though it was. It just shows more growth for the main character. I hope Ms. Stabenow gracefully has Kate recover from this and writes many more enjoyable books. So many other authors have done this and the series never are quite the same.

3 out of 5 stars If you loved the series up to now..........2004-12-05

I'm writing this review because of all the people who have said they will stop reading the series because of this book.
If you have read the other reviews, you know that a Very Bad Thing happens in this book -- many of the reviews have said exactly what that Very Bad Thing is.
I had a similar reaction. But I already had the next book in hand, and wanted -- needed -- to see what happened after. So I read it, and the next one, and the one after that, and the one after _that_ (and I'll be reading the most recently released as soon as I get my hands on it).
They are worth reading, just as much as the ones before. Yes, a Very Bad Thing happens in this book. Senseless, unforeseen, and devastating. But such things happen in real life too. And people go on, much as this series goes on.
So if you liked the series up to this point, read Hunter's Moon, react, and then keep reading the series. I don't think you'll regret it.

5 out of 5 stars Tear jerker.......2004-10-29

I started reading this series with 'A Fine and Bitter Snow' and have made my way, increasingly faster, through the earlier books. Having read references to the tragedy that befell Jack, I knew of the premise before I started the book. However that didn't soften the blow. I too found myself with tears, greatly caring about these 2 fictional characters (and Mutt too!).

Reading later books in the series first, I didn't initially warm to Kate's character who I felt was somewhat cold and detached. Now I completely understand that part of her character, a result of the loss she experienced. It has been enjoyable to read the earlier books which she shared with Jack, and I'm enjoying reading later books where there is a glimmer of happiness in her future.

Dana has made me a fan of mysteries and added to my love of all things Alaskan!

1 out of 5 stars Where's the Mystery?.......2004-08-16

I avoided reading this novel for a long time because I accidently found out the ending in a review. I was quite disapointed in the stunt ending and the lack of any real mystery. I read to be entertained, to learn someting new, not to be annoyed at the end because there was very little value in what I had paid for. The German hunting party for the most part was a sampling of every cartoon character that portrays bad guy, killing off a main characther because there was no effort to write a better solution to ending a romantic dilemma, and the "Outside" bashing. This series has probably come to and end for me as I'm finding the writing formulaistic and am not as entertained as I once was when the plots were more cunning and the charaters more believable.
