The copy I received was dated (2003) so most of the statistical information and internet information was no longer accurate.

Having read several books on the topic Aspatore Books has missed the mark with this effort. Merely some amusing anecdotal stories by industry insiders. The vast majority of the book reads like a repetative statement of the obvious.....there isn't any meat on these bones.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars There are better Ashtanga books available........2004-07-19

I bought this book because I wanted a different take on Ashtana Yoga to David Swenon's "Ashtanga Yoga: 'The Practice Manual'". I have practiced yoga off and on since I was 14. I am 25 now and thus have more than a decade of trying to do yoga- primarily with the use of books- as I do not have the kind of money it requires to get a good teacher i.e. $100-150/month- but I have had 3 months or so with a good teacher.

Positive Criticism:
If you are learning from a class and an instructor, Pegrum's book is pretty much a very terse flip book of asanas and could help you remember the names, and basic ideas to remember when practicing these asanas. She also describes Ujjayi breathing in some detail, which again is a very important part of Ashtanga Yoga.

Negative Criticism:
If you are trying to learn from a book or learn something more than what your instructor has shown you this is not the book for you. This book is incomplete in terms of a description of the type of asanas described, the directions for each asana, and also how to do the rediculously difficult - at least at the beginning- half vinyasa. The main problem I found with this book is that the descriptions given to each asana are so terse that you have a problem knowing if you are doing the asana properly.

These statements were made after comparing Pegrum's "Ashtanga Yoga: The Complete mind and Body Workout" to David Swenson's "Ashtanga Yoga: 'The Practice Manual'". If Swenson's book and Pegrum's book are compared Swenson' has a far superior book for learning Ashtanga by one's self and even if you plan to have a teacher Swenson's book is still superior if you like descriptions of asanas that deal both with how to get into a pose eventually from a rather inflexible body to how one can get into a pose having a body like a yogi. Not everyone thinks like me so Pegrum's book might suit another person very well but I felt that something should be said about what I think is an inferior product.
Sincerely,
Yigal

5 out of 5 stars Does a good job of breaking down the series.......2003-10-17

I enjoyed this book immensely. The book breaks down the Primary Series into workable parts. The book starts with the two Sun Salutations, then it goes into the standing postures, the seated postures, advanced seated postures, and finishing/closing postures. This book does a good job of offering some modifications to some of the poses. Berly Benders "Power Yoga" does an even better job, but this book is quite good to get started with. Pegrum demonstrates the poses with tremondous competency, and makes them look almost attainable :-). Overall, this is a good book to start with.

5 out of 5 stars Recommended.......2003-05-01

I found this one to be extremely informative & practical and thankfully free from the cliched vagueness of some other books I have read. It contains very clear photos and detailed instructions for each pose/sequence along with the benefits of each pose. The introduction talks about the origins of yoga, the 8 limbs, etc and basically how to get the best out of your practice (touching on routine, diet, etc). Probably best suited for individuals who have already been introduced to yoga (at any level).

5 out of 5 stars Great!.......2002-03-04

This book is by far a great comprehensive view to AShtanga yoga. IT shows you how to do the various poses, alternative, easier ways, and the benefits of each of them. This is a must if you devote time to yoga and are an enthusiast. IT is best if you already have some degree of flexibility before you start this type of yoga.

"Death is certain. Life is not." So begins this commonsensical, infinitely useful workbook that's aimed at helping your survivors handle the requisite legal and household affairs after your death. Author Lynn McPhelimy was inspired to write the book when her parents were both diagnosed with terminal cancer and her father said to her, "'You know when I'm gone, I don't want the yard all dug up when you're looking for the septic tank. So here is this little map.'" It's a book that's not meant just for the elderly or the seriously ill, but for anyone who wants a handy reference with all the necessary "facts of life" in one spot. This way, your family won't be left grieving and scrambling around trying to find your Social Security number, or the name of your insurance company, your lawyer, your second cousin who's supposed to be left your antique lead crystal vase ... you get the picture.

The book includes the nitty-gritty: writing a will, what music you want played at your funeral or memorial service (that is, if you want one), what should be included in your obituary or epitaph, and a hundred other things you've pondered--but never bothered to deal with. Granted, this is scary terrain, but it'll make things a lot less traumatic for your survivors if they feel organized and know things like where you hide the key to your safe deposit box and which bank it's with. It also covers the intricacies of your house, with space for recording the facts you take for granted: where's the damn fuse box? Do you have anything hidden in the attic, under floorboards, or somewhere else? Which sentimental items do you want left with whom or donated to which charity? What are the stories behind those objects that make them sentimental, anyway? And who's that person in the back row of the old family photo that's hidden at the bottom of a shoebox that was stashed in the back of the hallway closet??

In addition to its practicality, this workbook is also meant to be a keepsake, with space for writing down memories of important life events and things you've always meant to accomplish, the things you've always meant to tell people. In this way, The Checklist of Life also functions as a psychological kick in the pants, inspiring you to actually get out and do those things you've promised yourself you'd get around to, "one of these years." --Erica Jorgensen

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Blessing .......2007-02-18

This book was the most incredible blessing when we lost a loved one recently. The time of a death, there are so many emotions, and so many decisions to make -- the guidance of this book, filled in in advance, is an amazing blueprint to make that transitional time early in grieving so much easier. Not only does it offer a place to record vital information about insurance policies, bills, assets, safe deposit boxes, etc -- but it also includes places to write to those you love, write stories you remember of your parents, write accounts of your children's early days.
So, you see, it creates not only a black and white fact organizer, but a flesh and blood gift of the heart to those left behind. Invaluable.

    5 out of 5 stars Be Prepared ~ With a Smile!.......2007-01-09

This is the most incredible book! It helps one to prepare to leave this world. In a time of greiving, family and friends wont want to wonder what your wishes are ~ they will know! The book contains everything from where you hid those "special" papers to the words you would like spoken at your final service... OR even if you want a service. It has lots of room for you to fill out your thoughts and wishes to your family and friends. There is a section that allows you to express your hopes and dreams for your children. One of the most moving things in the book was: "IF you were told you had thirty minutes to live, who would you call and what would you say?" It makes you think about the things in life that go unsaid. It helps to make closure easier. I gave this book to my friends for the holidays. It made sound a bit odd, but after reading the wonderful quotes, the ease of filling in the blanks and knowing that you are making your "leaving" easier ~ it was a much appreciated gift. Don't hesitate to get your life in order... the clock is ticking. :-) Thank you Lynn for a WONDERFUL insightful book!

    5 out of 5 stars Thinking Ahead.......2006-05-12

I saw this book at my brother-in-law's and was impressed with his foresightedness. We all put off thinking about our own demise, but filling out the information in this book is the right thing to do.
It has fill-in-the-blank forms to capture all sorts of information for your family or whoever has to handle your affairs after you go. Think about the basics (real estate, insurance, investments), but also think about the many details that right now are only in your head.
I particularly liked the Hiding Places section. That covers where you tucked the special jewelry, how to get the safe combination and other nitty gritty details.
Some possessions may be special to you, but others don't know the story behind the items. The book has space to list those and the meaning, so your heirs won't chuck out precious family momentos.
There's a place to list special dates and to write what you want in your obituary. It encourages you to write a letter to your child and place it in the book for them to read after your death.
Really this is a book that every family should have on hand (and filled out). Give your spouse or family the facts and feelings to better cope with a trying time.

    5 out of 5 stars Invaluable information.......2001-08-14

After losing my mother in April, I realized just how much more difficult it would have been had I not had this book. She spelled out everything I needed to know to fullfill her wishes and to make the process easier for me. EVERYONE, no matter the age, should have their own copy to assist their family once they are gone. It's a peaceful feeling knowing you've taken care of your family member exactly the way they would have liked.

I found this book on my Daddy's desk last week when he died. Without it we would have been utterly LOST. I came up here to Amazon to purchase this book for my desk - it was indispensible, and once again my GOOD Father has shown me the RIGHT way to help loved ones. C.

    A Faux Van Gogh

When North Carolina antique dealer Abigail Timberlake makes a bid of $150.99 on a truly awful copy of Van Gogh's The Starry Night, she's just trying to win Mama's approval by supporting the church auction. Hopefully, she'll make her money back on the beautiful gold antique frame. Little does she expect she's bought herself a fortune...and a lot of trouble.

    A masterpiece to kill for

When her ex-boyfriend shows up and offers ten bucks for the ugly Starry Night, Abby pops the frame and is stunned to discover hidden behind the faux Van Gogh canvas a multi-million dollar lost art treasure. Suddenly she's a popular lady in her old hometown, and her first visit is from Gilbert Sweeney, her schoolyard sweetheart (according to him), who claims the family's painting was donated by mistake. But social calls quickly turn from nice to nasty as it's revealed that the mysterious masterpiece conceals a dark and deadly past and some modern-day misconduct that threatens to rock the Rock Hill social structure to its core. Someone apparently thinks the art is worth killing for, and Abby knows she better get to the bottom of the secret scandal and multiple murders before she ends up buried six feet under a starry night.

4 out of 5 stars If You Build a Better Mouse Trap..........2005-06-27

I have come to really like this series but the author really needs to pay more attention to her overall story line. In this book the author claims that Abigail Timberlake inherited her antique shop from her aunt but anyone who read the leadoff book of the series knows that Abby already had her shop before the aunt in question dies. In the second book, the man who had inherited the shop had disappeared and Jane Cox, CJ to her friends, was in that shop. There was never any explanation as to how CJ got the shop but Abby certainly didn't inherit it. One wonders just how much attention Ms. Myers pays to her own stories. There are also several typographical and grammatical errors in this book that the editor most certainly should have fixed. Those I can live with but the inconstancies have to stop.

Beyond these problems, this is another fun mystery featuring the feisty Abigail Timberlake and her oddball friends and family. I always begin these books with a great deal of anticipation in regards to what Abby's mother will be up to in the new installment. This book finds her learning an African language so that she can go to Africa and be a missionary. She doesn't plan on going through her church or consulting the Bishop, she is just going to hop on a plane, fly to Africa and start doing missionary stuff. She finally agrees to at least talk to the Bishop who urges her to pray about it and in the end she decides that instead of being a missionary she will join a health club that masquerades as a sex emporium. Along the way she openly lusts after a young biker named Fred.

This story revolves around a very important and valuable painting that Abby buys at a church auction. The valuable painting is covered by a rather shabby fake but Abby buys it for the frame, only to discover the treasure she has once she gets home. Almost immediately, she finds herself being followed and watched by a guy named Mouse Trap among others, and once again, without waiting for the police to take action, Abby begins to investigate on her own. As normal, Abby stumbles and bumbles along, nearly gets killed, looses her cat to a catnapper, and only solves the mystery when the principles confess. While all of this is happening Abby manages to alienate all of her friends but CJ whom she sets up with a policeman who is, like CJ, from Shelby and who tells the same kind of scatterbrained stories.

Tamar Myers has a great talent for writing and for creating a wonderful set of characters. The mysteries are seldom the central focus of the plot but the story is so much fun that I seldom care. This book, like the previous ones in the series is great fun and often laugh out loud funny. No, this is not a deep scintillating mystery but it was never meant to be. It was meant to be a warm fuzzy mystery that is a load of fun, and that is exactly what it is.

2 out of 5 stars I never know what to grade these stories........2004-02-13

I always have a problem with giving Tamar Myers' stories a rating. The idea behind the books is usually a good one, and there is some humour, but they are truly lacking in some key areas. Ms. Myers really needs an editor for her books. She contradicts herself throughout the books. Also, she requires some help in basic writing skills. She overuses a lot of words consistently (ie: wailing). Also, her main characters are quite rude, and there comes a time when that is no longer that funny. I always thought Abigail was less abrasive than Magdalena, but in this book I couldn't tell the difference. In this book, Abigail stumbles upon what might be a priceless work of art hidden behind a hideous copy that she purchased at a church bazaar. It turns out that some truly nasty people knew what was hidden behind the terrible front picture and are after Abby and her family in order to get the priceless work back. The other characters in the book are still likeable, Abby's mother, CJ and some of the characters we see only in this book are fairly well drawn, but it's hard to enjoy all this with the glaring errors.

3 out of 5 stars Wailing and more wailing...........2004-01-21

Why do Tamar Myers' characters have to wail? What a whiny, annoying thing to keep writing. It's very distracting, since I have to roll my eyes every time I see it, which is often! Abby lets everyone walk all over her and stands around and wails. I'd have told Mama where to get off a long time ago. Yes, Magdalena Yoder from Myers' other series is mentioned here; a police officer is also named Yoder. Can't she find another name to use? Both Abby and Magdalena are the same character, or should I say caricature? One is huge and Mennonite, the other tiny and Southern Christian. Otherwise, indistinguishable from each other.
All that said, these are easy, quick reads and the stories are pretty fun. They'd get 5 stars if not for the irritating main characters!

5 out of 5 stars "Estate" is Excellent.......2002-06-30

When Abby buys a bad painting for the frame at a church auction, she discovers a Van Gogh underneath. Life isn't the same after that in this page-turner. Ms. Myers is in top form, with many new characters thrown into the plot pot, as well as the usual gang of family and friends. Lovable goof C.J. is matched up with a cop by Abby and Greg. As for Abby and Greg themselves - it's hard to tell where they're headed. I feel like shaking Abby and saying, "Wake up! He's a hunk - he loves you! What are you waiting for??" (I get involved.) Congratulations to Ms. Myers for another winner.

5 out of 5 stars Estate of Mind.......2002-02-07

I really love the ending with Adele Trapp. But I find it pretty hard to believe that Dmitri would come out when called. Because the more worried you are the less chance of him coming out. I know it doesn't say that she was worried but if you were about to be killed I think you'd be worried.

1 out of 5 stars This book is lightyears in terms of out of date........2006-07-20

The first review about this book states, "It just keeps getting better." That review was written in 1997, eleven years ago. In fact, as far as being relevant to the current state of the law, it would be a big mistake to rely on this book. The entire Federal Estate Tax Exemption Law was revamped by Congress in 2001, and will be again in 2010. If you want to read a great book stuffed with contemporary laws and easy, even fun, to read, get, "Everything A Baby Boomer Should Know -- An Insider's Guide to Estate Planning.

5 out of 5 stars Highly recommend if help is needed getting started.......2003-07-08

My in-laws had been putting off estate planning, which would put the family business at jeopardy at their death. The first chapter gives examples of what happens without planning, and after reading it, they started the process of a living trust and most importantly finished it!
The book also showed my husband and I why we needed a living trust to protect our young son (so he would not inherit wealth, without strings, at a naive 18), and why my widowed sister needed a trust to protect her children receiving an inheritance if she died after remarriage -- without a trust her inheritance would go to husband #2, and not her children.
    The book helps.

The book may be good. I don't know but these people have obviously written their own testimonials. How do the readers happen to know how many have been sold etc.

5 out of 5 stars Well worth reading.......1999-08-07

This book fully explaines it all. I got a trust through a lawyer and it was just as this book says. There are diagrams to show and the language is very easy to understand.

5 out of 5 stars The book and th e author changed my life!.......2001-04-11

I think as we humans look we are also full of fear. We always listen to each other and not the true spirit. I have learned from my full blood granny that we have to listen to our spirit and not people. As an author Wolf Moondance shows she listens to the spirit. We as humans want some one to show us the way and give us the answers. We have to be open to your spirit and hear the voice of our vision. In the spirit Medicine book I had to work to get passed my human ways but after reading one chapter I relized I had found a true teacher. I could not get away with my old ways but was open to the spirit. YOU will love it after you get to the real spirit self, Great Book...Grand Teacher!

I have read it and done the exersizes in the book and you feel worked over first and then you work on it and the doors staryt to open and the spirit changes and you grow. I know from reading all the books wolf has written that you will grow when you study Spirit Medicine. You have to know and want to know your spirit to find your spirit. No witch craft her. It is clear and clean that Wolf Moondance works from her vision, which is Native American. I know cause I am Native-Blackfoot. Thanks Wolf Like the work. Ronda Hunting Bear- Montana.

5 out of 5 stars Simply a great tool for LIFE!.......2001-04-07

I just recieved Wolf Moondance's books for my birthday. I want to say that I have NOT been disappointed by Rainbow Medicine and Spirit Medicine. After finishing both I was left with a sense of a deeper understanding for Wolf Moondance's vision. I also visited her web site. I have to say that there are differing concepts in her book and website, but I understand how this vision could be complicated and have more parts than what was in the book. Fortunately, both the book and the website make perfect sense and left me with a feeling of hope and understanding for my future. If you find things in the book that you don't understand, try going to the website and writing Wolf Moondance for clarification. This author's books are rich, and probably contain only a portion of the whole teaching. What you will find in her books is pure magical writing from a personal vision. Maybe if you are looking to "fix" your problems and haven't already addressed your issues you will miss the true meaning of the words in the book. Lots of people are angry and are looking for a way for someone or something to fix their problems. I am sorry for the last person that wrote a review on this book. The person sounds angry and confused. Wolf Moondance's books are not confusing or disappointing. They are a tool, one of many that you should use on your quest for a happy life. Don't let angry people influence you on buying the books. Take it from me, they are rewarding and consistently great.

1 out of 5 stars ok, if you like suckering people out of money.......2005-01-26

Feng Shui, as any educated person knows, is complete BS. Money can be better spent hiring a real designer. The basic idea of the book is to hire someone to 'Feng Shui' the house and mention the word during the sell. Feng Shui is purely an American invention and has no relevance whatsoever. It is dominated by people too stupid to get real training in interior design. Don't be fooled by these con men/women.

5 out of 5 stars The Bottom Line..........2003-08-28

Okay, here's the bottom line: I bought the book. My house had been on the market for four months. I had tried everything (lowered the price twice), fired one agent, hired another, offered incentives, I was about ready to pray to some Catholic saint in charge of selling homes and my real estate agent said, "buy this book." So I did. I did the stuff the quack author recommended (cost me about $$$ and two days of my time) and four days later, the first person to see the house after I made the changes, wrote an offer for full price. I'm not into miracles. Guess that does not matter. The house is now sold. That's the bottom line. Do I recommend this book? Only if you want to sell your house.

1 out of 5 stars McFengshui strikes again........2003-04-07

Another two-day wonder of the feng shui world writes a book that rehashes the advice realtors normally give to clients (before "feng shui" became a meme). The fact that the author reviewed her own book is particularly remarkable. That Lin Yun wrote something is not remarkable, because his dictum is that all of his students should write books about what his church sells as feng shui.

Most realtors are simply waiting for this fad to pass.

5 out of 5 stars Sell Your Home FASTER with FENG SHUI.......2003-01-07

As a Feng Shui Consultant, I met Holly Ziegler at a FS conference. I literally purchased one of the first books off the presses. We were planning to put our house on the market. I read the book, followed Ms Ziegler's suggestions, our house sold in HOURS! I now incorporate these practices when working with clients who are selling homes (and businesses) and have had great success. Ms Ziegler is right on the mark.
