5 out of 5 stars the first and best about indian gaming.......2000-06-16

This is bound to be a classic, one of those books scholars will use as a reference in trying to understand the transformation of Indian nations in the late 20th century. Several years before Indian casinos changed the economic landscape of the southern New England and other sections of North America, Rick Hornung was one of the first reporters on the case. In 1989-1990, he traveled to Mohawk lands, artfully documenting the Mohawks' violent civil war over the effort to build, run and maintain lucrative casinos. While most nations negotiated settlements and compacts with state and federal governments, the Mohawks refused to give up their sovereignty over reserved lands. This decision to resist and begin a new, dynamic economy is at the core of Hornung's gripping, exciting and incisive chronicle of what happens to an Indian community when it must decide between gambling or other forms of economic and political development. Adding to the complexity and excitement is Hornung's shrewd awareness of how troubles in New York spilled across the St. Lawrence River and caused an armed revolt on the streets of Montreal. Determined to let the various present their views, Hornung creates a vivid and unfrogettable protrait of a Mohawk community faced with the conflicting demands of preserving the past and securing a future. From one confrontation to the next, Hornung weaves a tight narrative of suspense and political intrigue that often erupts into violence. In his book, the Mohawks are astute and intelligent participants in the struggle to redefine their own identity in a world of loss, longing and betrayal.

5 out of 5 stars Intelligent and Relevant.......2000-06-06

This account of the Mohawk Civil War, near the end of the 20th century, proves even more relevant at the beginning of the 21st, as gambling laws and Indians make new news. Rick Hornung invites the men and women whose story this is, to speak from their own places of division and betrayal. With honesty and intelligence, Hornung's report brings these people to the understanding of his readers. One Nation Under The Gun is one of the most important books for anyone brave enough to look deep inside conflict and struggle. It is a must read for the serious student of history, politics, and government.

Book Description

Under The Gun is the long-awaited sequel to the bestselling novel, Gun Shy, continuing the story of St. Paul Police Officers Dez Reilly and Jaylynn Savage. Picking up just a couple weeks after Gun Shy ended, the sequel finds the two officers adjusting to their relationship, but things start to go downhill when they get dispatched to a double homicide--Jaylynn's first murder scene. Dez is supportive and protective toward Jay, and things go all right until Dez's nemesis reports their personal relationship, and their commanding officer restricts them from riding together on patrol. This sets off a chain of events that results in Jaylynn getting wounded, Dez being suspended, and both of them having to face the possibility of life without the other. They face struggles--separately and together--that they must work through while truly feeling "under the gun."

5 out of 5 stars A Sequel That's Better Than the Original.......2007-04-02

Back to tantalize readers, Dez and Jay come full force to deal with new relationship issues both at work and at home. Not only do they find themselves separated at work and mixed up in a murder investigation with a pair of questionable detectives, they also find themselves dealing with emotional issues associated with their new relationship.

Dez has problems dealing with concerns related to Jay and her late partner. As a result, she is temporarily suspended from the force and required to see a psychiatrist. She makes herself scarce and seemingly runs away from Jay as a result. Jay spends a lot of time doing grunt work in a murder investigation until she proves her worth to the two detectives leading the charge. She also spends a lot of time reaching out to her partner in hopes the older woman will finally acquiesce.

It's amazing the ways both protagonists mature emotionally and learn to be true partners as the story progresses. A must read for anyone who enjoyed `Gun Shy,' `Under the Gun' is the continuation of a truly satisfying love story between two women who defy the odds.

5 out of 5 stars Thrilling Sequel.......2006-08-23

Under the Gun is a great book! Gun Shy left us all wanting more of these great characters and this sequel delivers! The plot is good through out and this book is a true page turner.
The love, humor, devotion, sex, and who could forget the COLD weather are all here in this exciting book! I can't wait to read Have Gun Will Travel. I hope Lori Lake keeps the Gun series going...it is an enjoyable, easy read!

5 out of 5 stars Review of "Under the Gun" by Cheri Rosenberg.......2005-03-30

In the second gripping police drama in Lori L. Lake's Gun series, "Under the Gun" delightfully picks up where "Gun Shy" left off and sets the stage for the third novel, "Have Gun We'll Travel." Once you make the acquaintance of Officer Desiree (Dez) Reilly and her partner and lover Rookie Officer Jaylynn (Jay) Savage, you won't be able to get enough of this dynamic duo. The two cops are as different as night and day in appearance and personality. Always the macho cop, Dez, affectionately referred to as "tall, dark, and dangerous," maintains a tough impenetrable shell and demeanor to hide her fears. "[Jaylynn] liked the fact that there was a defensive fortress around her taciturn partner, but that the tall cop had let her find the few chinks in the armor so that she had free access to come and go as she pleased" (p. 378). Dez contains her emotions until the breaking point, while Jay is not embarrassed or afraid to show her feelings. "It occurred to [Dez] that one major thing she liked about Jaylynn was how alive she was. She took on life with zest, whether she was investigating a crime, talking on the phone, eating something tasty, making love, or crying at a sad movie" (p. 271).

"Under the Gun" begins with Dez seemingly happy and hopelessly in love with Jay, the vivacious, light-haired bundle of energy, but at the same time, she is petrified of losing her, which is making her miserable. Jay is proving to be an excellent officer, but her impulsive streak has Dez worried, since Jay repeatedly ends up in harm's way. It's understandable that the introspective Dez, who withdraws and equates letting her guard down with being weak, is afraid of losing the one person who understands her, tolerates her moodiness, and who adds meaning, love, and joy to her life. Lake explores their evolving relationship with rich detail while Dez goes through the biggest transformation of all.

Dez is so adept at concealing her inner turmoil that even she is not aware she's doing it. Having suffered serious traumatic events in her life including the loss of her beloved father, also a police officer, and her partner and close friend Officer Ryan Michaelson, Dez snaps and ends up suspended with her only alternatives being to see psychiatrist Marie Montague, or be kicked off the force. Reluctantly, the skeptical secretive Dez works with Marie. Can Marie save Dez from self-destructing, and going to a very lonely and isolated place where she denies her heart's desire for fear of loss and rejection? Will the astute psychiatrist help Dez learn to bridge the gap in all of her severed relationships, including the ones with her mother Collette and her brother Patrick?

Can Marie help Dez believe Luella, Dez's landlady and chief nurturer, who tells her, "You can't hold onto someone so tight that you choke the life out of them" [p. 280]. Luella tries to convince Dez that loving and losing someone is painful, but avoiding love to avoid pain is not the answer. She also tells her surrogate daughter, "You are a strong person, Desiree Reilly, and you deserve to love and be loved. But you have to make a choice to take the chance" [p. 280].

Lori L. Lake's completely satisfying action/romance novel will engage a full range of emotions that will leave the reader wanting more. No stone is left unturned as all the loose ends are tied up. The psychological journey of the characters' growth and development, particularly Dez's, is just as intriguing as the crime drama, murder investigation, and police work. Every character, no matter how small their role, has a place and reason for being in the story. Lake does not rush through her narrative, but with the perfect pace, 490 pages go by in a blink.

I recommend "Under the Gun" for the strong characterization, loveable characters, and absorbing plot. Anyone who enjoys a realistic look at police procedurals, romance, and psychological drama, will love following the story of Dez and Jay. Lake paints a vivid picture that allows the reader to jump into the story and become a part of Dez's world. It is not surprising that the sequel, "Have Gun We'll Travel," is a finalist for a Golden Crown Literary Society 2006 Goldie Award. "Under the Gun" is a page-turner; read it and you will see what I mean.

5 out of 5 stars A sequel as fine as "Gun Shy".......2004-08-06

A continuation of her excellent first novel and just as good. Along with all of the romance and relationship angst and suspense and a well relayed tactile sense for her setting (I would actually get cold at times while reading from her description of the environment) the thing I liked most about this novel was the presentation of an empathetic, funny, real, genuinely helpful shrink, if only they could all be as intelligent and insightful.

5 out of 5 stars Romance, drama and action in a fabulous sequel to Gun Shy.......2004-07-15

This novel picks up right where Gun Shy left strong veteran cop Dez and her rookie partner (both on and off the job) Jaylynn. Their happiness is clouded by events that force Dez to deal with pent-up stress, emotional baggage and the everlasting question of whether loving and losing is better than never having loved at all.

Since the two main characters are policewomen, there is certainly a fair amount of action and police procedure in this book, but foremost the book delves deeply into concepts of strength and weakness, physical as well as emotional.

I liked this book a lot. You really get to know and feel for the characters. Especially fascinating was Dez's struggle to handle her emotional problems, when so much of the character's self-image seems built on her being the strong, stoic hero coping alone with issues big and small. The way Jaylynn deals with her partner's inner turmoil is also nicely depicted, with a realistic portrayal of her sometimes understanding and at other times, like a lot of their surrounding characters, fooled by the strong self-sufficient appearance of her partner.

I strongly recommend this book. Read Gun Shy first though since it's just as good! Also, if you like this one, try some of Radclyffe's books which are similar, but different. Radclyffe's are often similar story-wise with a lot of focus on strong women, but less fleshy character depiction and more fleshy love scenes. Really good reads the lot of them.

Graves is hovering around, hoping to foment some problems in the ranks of the trust. While that is going on, we get the back story of several of the pivotal, or presumably pivotal characters that Graves is gathering and influencing with his mystery briefcases and past ties. This includes minutemen both new and old.

5 out of 5 stars killer, in every sense.......2007-03-07

This is the sixth installment of the trade paperback editions of the "100 Bullets" comic books series, covering issues 37-42. It is difficult to review without giving away parts of the plot, and in noir literature this good, that would be as criminal as most of the characters. Suffice to say that Azzarello's writing is in top form, as in the artwork by Risso. Azzarello and Risso pack an incredible "one, two punch". The story line for this series is full of twists and sub-plots, as a good noir novel should be. The artwork creates moods that accompany perfectly, frequently taking slightly grim or humorous side-tracks in the 'extra space' of the panels. If all graphic novels and comics were as well written and drawn as this there would be no question as to whether it was an art form to be taken seriously (not that there really is, in my opinion). While all of the single trade editions could stand alone, why would you want to do that to yourself? I don't recommend starting here.... start with number 1, read this one after number 5, and before 7. You are going to want to read them all so you might as well do it right.

5 out of 5 stars One Of The Best OF The Series........2005-10-28

This 100 bullets collection is one of the best pieces of art and crime noir on the comic shelf. This collection features six stories following six of the most important characters in the series, dizzy, cole burns, lono, graves, benito, and wylie. It has some of the best short stories i've ever read. This is Azzarello and risso at their upmost best. Awsome.

5 out of 5 stars High quality crime comic.......2004-03-14

This is the first and only 100 bullets Trade PaperBack that I've read, so I don't think I got all the context, but I still think that Six Feet Under the Gun is a good stand alone collection. I tend to read about comics that I'm interested a lot through reviews online before I buy them, so I had an understanding of the basic premise of "100 Bullets" and given that small knowledge, I found Six Feet Under the Gun to be pretty accessible.

This is basically a collection of six 22 page stories about individuals from the "100 Bullets" world. Unfortunately, there aren't any origin stories, and none of these are particularly expositive of the characters personal history. They all just show something important happening to the character which sets them onto a different path. It's important to know that this story utilizes the "I (Agent Graves) give you 100 Bullets to kill this man who ruined you" device very, very sparingly; these stories enrich existing characters. The characters are: Dizzy Cordova, Agent Graves, Lono, Wylie, Cole and Benito.

I don't know much about art from a technical standpoint, but I think that Edwardo Risso's artwork is pretty cool. As an interesting factoid I found out, Risso is an immigrant from South America and he speaks Spanish, so the writer, Brian Azzarello, has to find a different way to communicate ideas to him.

I don't have very much experience with crime comics; I've read the "Preacher" series and a few other graphic novels. I didn't think that this TPB was very objectionable, it's profane and mildly violent, although not like Preacher is. I wouldn't consider giving it to small children, although mature people can handle this. Six Feet Under the Gun, a good set of stories, highly reccomended.

4 out of 5 stars I LIKED IT!.......2006-06-27

This is the story of a type of government run terrorist fighting organization, where the two protagonist are teammates. It is a romance with a little bit of the paranormal thrown in.

The hero Will, is a twin whose brother dies during an assignment that also leaves Will injured. He's lost his sight, he can only see shadows but now he can sometimes read the minds of some of the bad guys and of course his teammate, Holly, whom he's secretly been attracted to for years. But since they work together in a dangerous job, he doesn't want to act on the attraction, it would be distracting and could compromise the safty of the team.

Holly has always been attracted to him but as the only woman on the 5 man team, she likewise has always maintained a friendly teammate type of attitude towards Will. But she's always been attracted to Will. When he loses his brother, ends up in the hospital then has to go into hiding to be protected from the terrorist, Holly goes with him. Who better to protect him than the woman who loves him.
I liked the way the author took her time to develop their relationship, they didn't just immediately jump into the sack. I enjoyed the story very much, although I found it to be unrealistic-people who are that emotionally involved with each other would not be allowed to remain on this kind of team, it would be dangerous for all concerned-it was still very entertaining.

1 out of 5 stars What a piece of crap........2004-03-10

Again, Geoffrey Boothroyd is continuing his legacy in fabricating what he doesn't know/can't research.

The book was hilarious at some parts that I couldn't just stop laughing, some of his statements -specially the historical ones- show that he was very lazy to even read books that were published years before this gem which would've saved us from reading his fabrications.

To give you an example of a very odd statement, is how "Purdeys couldn't make an offer and instead began making guns for Woodward, thus there were three types of O/Us made by Purdeys: Woodwards made for him, Purdey/Woodward (whatever this means!!) and Purdey based on Woodward made in their own factory"..............

Beaumont and Dallas books say simply that Woodward came to them, they made him an offer, purchased everything, changed few things in design and porduced "Purdey" o/u on the modified system (Note that Beaumont's book was there for 10 years before Boothroyd writes this gadget)!

He could only use this book to mis-read something and claim again that first Purdey O/U on Woodward design was a 16 bore, while infact Beaumont says the first O/U ever by Purdey was 16 bore M/L rifle built in 1871 !!! First O/U on Woodward was a 12 bore built around 1950.

The guy can't even read and quote.

Sections on Beesley, Lang, WR and others have similar hilarious fabrications, unfortunately I'm limited to 1000 words.

Not a total waste of money, the laughs deserved it!

It is a great book for those who is WWI aviation fun. It gives you description of all victories of Voss, Immelmann, Goring and Red Baron's young brother. It also gives short biographies of their unlucky adversaries and if they managed to survive the war their consequent life achievements. WWI aviafuns, you MUST read it.
On the otehr hand it is NOT the book you want to introduce yourself with to the subject

5 out of 5 stars Great book........2002-01-03

It is a well written book describing all documented vitories of four German Aces. The book gives the dates and details (if available) of fights and biographies of their opponents. Its structure resembles the structure of "Under the guns of the Red Baron".
Those who are not accustomed to this type of literature will consider it dry and should read something more general about WWI aviation before buying this particular book. For WWI aviation fans its MUST TO READ.

Book Description

With all of the competing information in the news these days about the best way to reform Social Security, how is a concerned citizen to know which is the right path? This book is the answer. Arthur Benavie gives readers the tools neces-sary to make decisions on this subject that they and their children will not regret. The U.S. public has been offered false information on this issue, told that Social Security is going bankrupt unless it is reformed immediately. Benavie refutes these arguments and separates economic facts from personal value judgments. Social Security Under the Gun is an inval-uable guide to understanding and making informed decisions about one of our most important social welfare systems.

2 out of 5 stars The Book Does not Provide Adequate Answers to the SS Issue.......2003-11-02

Although the notion of an objective, unbiased source for Social Security information is welcome and even encouraged, Arthur Benavie's "Social Security Under the Gun" does not meet that test. It is clear from the beginning, despite Mr. Benavie's contention that he does not want to steer the debate in a particular direction, that he has something against the notion of allowing younger workers to devote a portion of their Social Security taxes into personal retirement accounts.

There are a lot of frivolous objections that Mr. Benavie makes. One of the most eggregious objections is the notion that privatizing Social Security would abridge our collective social contract to establish this particular social program. This is complete nonsense. No one in their right mind would even know what he is talking about. Although Social Security has been around for 68 years, people do not have this notion of their being involved in a "social contract" with their other fellow citizens. I fail to see how privitizing Social Security would result in people feeling more disconnected from one another.

In fact, I see just the opposite. I notice, for instance, that in my own investing, I often think of myself as an integral member of our system, part of the corporate network with fluctuating stock and bond prices. When working, I really do not see how I am connected to others when I see my wages deducted to pay for Social Security, for instance. I see a greater connection with stocks and bonds, however.

Mr. Benavie appears to believe that Americans ought to be forced to do particular things because, according to his elitist, intellectual view, Americans are either too incompetent or too stupid to save enough for their own retirement. Such a view is quite condescending and is an insult to the remarkable intelligence of the American public.

Mr. Benavie also has a hard time arguing against allowing individual investors to invest in private accounts. He argues that stock investing is risky. So? This does not serve as a good reason to ban citizens from partaking in so-called "risky" behavior, especially if doing so is a way of decreasing the burden on the Social Security system in the years to come. He fails to mention, of course, that over the long run, for an extended period of time, stocks and bonds will yield much higher growth yields than Social Security. A younger worker putting money away now, in a mutual fund, for instance, will have a substantial amount of wealth by the time they retire.

What is Benavie's answer to Social Security? More taxes and fewer benefits. Well, that's a typical liberal elitist -- Democratic answer. And I'm not going to tolerate it. Neither should any reader. This is book is not worth reading because it does not advance any new discussions or ideas on Social Security than those already discussed. It also does not go into much depth into the history or the workings of Social Security today.

And that's the way it is.

5 out of 5 stars Social Security Under the Gun:.......2003-07-06

The amazing thing about this little book is that it's such a quick, easy read, and yet I feel I've absorbed so much crucial information about "reforming" Social Security. I started out thinking privatization might be a good idea. By the end I was convinced it would be a disaster. Yet Benavie's tone is calm and non-hysterical, If all economists could write as clearly as he does, it would be a lot easier to keep informed on vital issues like this one.

5 out of 5 stars Clear, concise, objective analysis.......2003-06-20

If you want to understand how social security works, what its problems are, and the major proposals for fixing it, read this book. It is rare to find such a clear and concise analysis of an important public policy issue.
The author explains objectively the alternative proposals for social security reform and their consequences, so readers can decide for themselves. He clarifies issues often muddied by political rhetoric and superficial media converage.
The main text is only 102 pages, with 40 pages of notes, references and index for those who wish to explore further.

1 out of 5 stars No Balanced Approach In This Book.......2003-05-31

In the Introduction, Arthur Benavie tries very hard to make the case that this book offers a fair and balanced analysis of Social Security reform. It does not.

Chapters 1 and 2 are designed to present the cases for and against privatization of Social Security. In Chapter 1 (Fixing Social Security) he presents the case for saving the system through a long list of tax increases and benefit reductions. The opposing side of the argument is not presented at all.

In Chapter 2 (Should We Privatize Social Security?), he starts out by presenting as many cons as he does pros for the privatization point of view. For every item he describes what the supporters of privatization espouse, he provides a rapid response in attempt to discredit the idea. By dedicating one chapter each to the "higher taxes/lower benefits" and the "privatization" viewpoints, he must think he is being "balanced".

Bottom line...this book is advertised as a balanced analysis of Social Security reform. But it comes down clearly on the side of being against any reform designed to privatize a portion of Social Security.

This may be a good book for you if you want to read an author make the case against privatization of Social Security. If you want to truely understand the trade-offs associated with privatization, this book will be a big letdown.

    Book Description

Following their imaginative, popular and successful approach to identifying and describing all the airmen who were claimed by Manfred von Richthofen in Under the Guns of the Red Baron, and by Immelmann, Voss, Goring and Lothar von Richthofen in Under the Guns of the German Aces, air historians Franks and Giblin have put four more equally distinguished German aces of World War One under the microscope.

In doing so, they profile not only the aces themselves, all of whom received the 'Blue Max' - Germany's highest award for bravery in action - but also the Allied airmen they fought and downed. By extensive and exhaustive research into records, and carefully studying maps, timings and intelligence reports - contemporary and retrospective - as full a picture as possible is revealed with excellent photographic coverage of the many protagonists involved.

All four of the aces, Bohme, Muller, von Tutschek and Wolff were unit leaders at different times, one commanded a Jagdesgeschwader, the others commanded Jagdstaffels. All four were destined to die in actions against the Royal Flying Corps. Every one of their combats is detailed here, with colour artwork. This is the last in the 'Under the Guns' trilogy, to complete the set.

    Book Description

In his provocative new study, James Toner argues that the cardinal virtues are and must be the core values of the military. Without them, the armed forces become mercenaries, thugs, or fascists. With them, the profession of arms can serve in many ways as a beacon of light for an increasingly confusing age.

Building upon a bold introduction, which includes what many will regard as a surprising view of military ethics, Toner examines each of the four cardinal virtues—wisdom, courage, temperance, and justice—and places each in the context of a compelling case study from recent U.S. military history. He discusses the Flinn Case, the Lavelle Affair, a B-52 crash in Washington State, and the courageous actions of Hugh Thompson after My Lai.

Arguing that each officer is a teacher, Toner offers an intriguing interlude about education. He also provides a compelling analysis of “dueling duties”: what to do when making a choice between conflicting obligations. In his conclusion on character, Toner suggests that the toughest problems demand good people, not simple solutions.

Morals Under the Gun offers a clear, concise, and cogent study of the U.S. military and moral theology. Toner's writing is engaging and his advocacy impassioned.

5 out of 5 stars How American Ethics Affects the Military.......2005-04-05

We give to the military the power of life and death over other people. We teach our young men (and our young women) how to fire a rifle, the basic weapon of all soldiers. This is important because without that knowledge disasters happen as they did at the Chosin Reservoir in Korea.

At the same time we must also teach them when, why and at whom to fire a rifle (or not to). And to fire a rifle at another human is a difficult thing. It's a thing that we are taught not to do all of our civilian lives. The military spends a great deal of time thinking about this problem, because when it fails, as at the abusive prisons, Kent State, or Mei Lei the results are truly tragic.

The author has written a call to arms to make the understanding of the profession of arms understood in our country.
