Sesame Street veteran and Emmy Award-winner Mo Willems returns with a fast, funny follow-up to Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus!--only this time, the short-tempered pigeon faces his perfect foil in a "special guest star" duckling. In the previous Pigeon book, author and illustrator Willems expertly distilled the escalating emotions of preschoolers all too anxious to get their way. The Pigeon Finds a Hot Dog--also a simple and sparsely illustrated story--explores the flip side of that coin, exposing the poker-face persuasive powers of young negotiators. The pigeon just wants to greedily eat the hot dog that he's found: "Oooooh! A hot dog! Yummy! Yummy! Yummy!" Then along comes the duckling, "scooty scoot scoot!" with his insistent questions about hot dogs: "What do they taste like?...Would you say that it tastes like chicken?...Hey, I'm a curious bird." At first, the pigeon entertains the duckling, "Each morsel is a joy! A celebration in a bun!", but then he soon suspects the little bird might have designs on his delicious dog. In the end, of course, the clever duckling gets his way--and half of the hot dog: "You know, you're pretty smart for a duckling." (Ages Baby to Preschool) --Paul Hughes

This was a very funny book!.......2007-08-31
This book is very funny, and young kids as well as old will enjoy it very much.
Hot Diggety Dog - your kids will love this!.......2007-08-22
Kids love finding books about familiar characters and Mo Willems has created a new one with his comical pigeon. Instead of playing along with the reader, this time he answers to a little duckling who just wants a bite of his hot dog. The duckling is pretty sneaky and asks all kinds of questions (which drives the pigeon CRAZY) until finally the pigeon gives in and shares his hot dog with him. More great facial expressions and a simple story everyone will enjoy!
Not as good as the "Bus" or "Stay up Late" books.......2007-07-03
My daughter prefers this one to the others, probably because hot dogs are her favorite food. It's not interactive like the others, but it teaches sharing and has a cute, curious bird to make it fun.
love it love it love it.......2007-06-21
my daughters absolutely ADORE this book. it even inspried my daughter to start reading. it's just a clever and fun book that my daughters have reciting ever since the first time we read it.
A Morsel of Gem.......2007-04-15
It is amazing how in so few words and lines one of the most dreaded human behaviors can be exhibited as in this book: Conscience in the form of the Duckling wondering why the Pigeon doesn't do the right thing. And what a happy relief it is to do the right thing.

Laugh out loud.......2007-03-16
I read this book just recently. The material made me laugh- Due to my Management storys. I reccomend if you ever Read Dunces you must flollow up with This book.
"...the result of all our travels will be to arrive back where we started, and know it for the very first time.".......2005-10-21
Lucky Dogs hold a Zen quintessence that can only be approximated by the sobriquet "Bourbon Street Steak," and are oddly more satisfying than Café du Monde beignets and chicory coffee in invoking memories of New Orleans and her pleasures.
Are Lucky Dogs, therefore, our petite Madeleine dipped in tea? Proust's ghost will not say, for now is discretion, and these are our memories, after all.
Historian Jerry Strahan has had a very American career. He is a respected and indeed famous and authoritative scholar of military history, but like many a family man needed to provide for his brood with a higher cash flow than itinerant academic leavings would provide, and fell into managing the Lucky Dog operation through those twin hands, fate and opportunity surrounded by less appealing alternatives. Over the decades he grew into the job, and even expanded the operation to Washington, D.C., where I was a happy customer.
Strahan's academic career is only a leitmotif in "Managing Ignatius: The Lunacy of Lucky Dogs and Life in New Orleans" for he places the characters of the vendors he deals with and his colorful memories front and center. For those not in the know, the "Ignatius" of the title is the immortal character of John Kennedy Toole's "Confederacy of Dunces" who has a comic scene selling weenies from a push wagon that is possibly one of the greatest memorable pieces of character and action reinforcing each other in American literature. To describe this scene as classic damns it with faint praise, for it simultaneously captures the character, the city, the soul, comedy, and tragedy in a single sustained breath. It should be a tattoo, and no American high school student should be unfamiliar with it.
And the primary emphasis of "Managing Ignatius" story is that Strahan works with many who are at the margins of employability, yet have personalities that draw you. "Managing Ignatius" therefore should serve as a management science alternative textbook, for indeed Strahan's goal is to sell weenies with a volatile cast and crew. He makes many bricks with very little straw.
Yet, there is a very tender side to his memoir, for Strahan never deprecates nor condemns even the most fricative people he must motivate. Indeed, he often observes that some of his most prickly characters end up being the best and most enduring vendors, and acknowledges that in an odd way many of them have found their calling in life, just as Strahan has found his.
This is an excellent, amusing, informative book that commands attention on multiple levels, and is not simply for tourists of New Orleans or Toole fans. For the story Strahan tells here is like our own as even the soul has a journey in life. In "Managing Ignatius" Strahan tells that story and "...the result of all our travels will be to arrive back where we started, and know it for the very first time." (T.S. Eliot)
Don't be a meanie!.......2005-09-23
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this--a great companion to John Kennedy Toole's A Confederacy of Dunces. What I enjoyed most were the vignettes of collected memories of those who've pushed the weinie carts. I've probably purchased a weinie or two from some of those very people, which reinforces my belief that everyone has a story and that some of our stories are more interesting than others. I'd much rather read anecdotes about the fallen and runaways and drunks and misfits than bios of those more fortunate, like a Donald Trump per se. What you get a sense of in reading "Managing Ignatius" is the importance of life, its simplicity, its pain, its brevity, its humor and joy. There are lots of funny, laugh-out-loud sections in this book. The only detraction is the author's tendency to stray away from the weinie cart pushers and focus on himself and his personal endeavors. These parts I found mostly uninteresting, but not enough to diminish all of what's right with this read. Highly recommended.
Dahlin', Jerry is telling it for True........2004-07-20
I grew up in New Orleans and spent a lot of time in the Quarter eating "Lucky Dogs" aka Bourbon Street Steaks. The characters are not exaggerations. From the shake down cops, to the vendors from Mars, Jerry is tellin' it for true. A visit with these characters is a great way to pass a good time.
"Ya didn't hav ta be there".......2003-11-06
You didn't have to be there, however if you were, you'll know. Now, if you have ever been in the food service industry, regardless of the establishment, you will recognize these characters and know what it is to "manage" them. This is one of very few books that I read over and over again. I relish just opening it up and reading a few paragraphs. I was joyously
surprised with this gift of a book. It is fluid, fun and more factual then you may want to know! This IS New Orleans. I know. I was born, bread, and fried there. This may be a story for "our" eyes only. I can smell the streets and feel the night. The hot, sweaty, sticky nights, and sticky shoes. I can taste the bourbon from the bottom of the cart...I can feel their pain. This is a great read. Read it before you go there,
or read it on the bus home. Moreover, pass it along. This is a great afternoon read wherever you may be. This is a long story, with a long shelf life. Like my life, so far, it just goes on and on and on......

Great hot dog recipes and side dishes from famous locales nationwide
Customer Reviews:
Totally awesome.......2007-08-01
I have never written a review for anything before, but this one deserves it. I absolutely love this book and so does my husband. I never knew so much about hot dogs, as well as the many different ways that people eat them across the country. I have it sitting out so that everyone can see it, and normally that is the first thing they pick up when they come to my home. I definitely recommend this book to anyone, even those who don't like hot dogs will like this book. It is totally awesome.
Great American Hot Dog Book=Great Book!.......2007-04-30
In The Great American Hot Dog Book one will find not only recipes for hot dogs in every conceivable fashion, but also recipes for side dishes and a wealth of information on the hot dog. Ms. Mercuri has outdone herself in providing a real reference on the history of the hot dog and how it became an icon of the American foodways. Recipes from across the country, showcasing each regional specialty are included, making this book a great travel guide as well as a cookbook. Her attention to detail and recipe testing are well-evident and make for a terrific book.
A book to truly relish.......2007-04-29
Becky Mercuri's latest addition to the history, traditions, and tastes of an American classic is truly a book to be read, used, and savored. From the traditions of New England to the modern stylings of the West Coast, Mercuri takes you on a culinary journey across the nation's hot dog highways and byways. Grab a copy of the book, sit back, and enjoy a trip that you will no doubt relish.
Puttin' On The Dog!.......2007-04-24
First off, you're going to need two copies of this book: one for the kitchen and one for your glove box. One for the kitchen and one for the road!
Becky Mercuri, as in all her other fine books, has once again gone above and beyond in her quest to document the historical authenticity, modern day excellence, and (with apologies to A.B.) just plane ol' good eats!
The Great American Hot Dog Book does for hot dogs what hot sauce did for the lowly chicken wing: it takes the common and turns it into the exceptional! No matter your station in life, you'll never be able to look down your nose at the hot dog ever again! The recipes that Ms Becky has researched, tested, and then included in this book will see to it that you won't!
She has done a great job of providing us with the knowledge and recipes that examine and celebrate the various regional differences and preferences for hot dogs across this great land of ours. And there are some undeniable difference, for sure. Just ask any hot dog vendor in Chicago for ketchup on your dog and see what happens...
This is a great book on a great American tradition.
Thank you Becky Mercuri for another outstanding resource on traditional American food.
The Great American Hot Dog Book.......2007-04-18
This is a most interesting and fun book. Anything written by Becky Mercuri is excellent. I love reading about hot dog stands in various states and would never have thought that there could be so many ways to serve wieners. Some of the sauces sound delicious. It's been years since I have had a hot dog (not even at ball games) but I plan to use some of the recipes in this book very soon. My family agrees that "The Great American Hot Dog Book" is a very special book.

Favorite book of Step into series.......2007-05-27
I love this book, and I love reading it to my 2 year old niece. For a step-into books it's cute, and humourous! My niece loves the book so much she is into her second copy. Hot Dog is about a dog that is so hot, and can't seem to find a cool place. He meets different people and animals and wants them to share their fan, or their ice cream, or their shady log- but all he hears is NO WAY DOG! Better than other step-into books - it's cute, rhymes, and has a good sharing moral at the end. It's creative, and is just plain fun to read out loud!!
Love This Book.......2004-04-20
The illustrations in this book are hilarious, The text is perfect for children that are just starting to read.Simple one syllable words with two to three words per page. But the best part of this book is the illustrations, I just love them. The dog spends the entire book hot and trying to cool off. Every attempt he makes fails until the very end. You find your yourself rooting for the dog. This is one of my son't favorite books, he wants to read it every night.
Fun Story.......2003-08-22
I am a Pre-Kindergarten teacher and I introduced this story to my class on the first day of school after we get in from the playground. They love it and relate to the hot little dog in the story.
This book is ideal for a child and an adult to sit and read together. It has predictable and easy words and the kids have fun watching the dog do anything to cool off on a hot day.
When I read it to the class, they enjoy it so much they take it from storytime and read it themselves. This is the kind of book that inspires young people to have a love for reading. They realize that reading is fun and can be easy too. This book was favorite from the first day.
"Hot Dog" Rates #1 in my Classroom!.......2001-09-02
I have begun to use these Road to Reading books in my resource classroom and the students love them. They especially loved Hot Dog. Many of the words are on the state mandated word lists for K-2. The pictures are terrific and the story is interesting and funny to the kids. I thought it was great too-in fact we all fell in love with the little "Hot Dog".
Excellent Kids starter book.......1999-04-12
This book was the first one our daughter (4) read by herself. It's pretty good and is at the level of the old "see spot run" books. It's about thirty pages and has nice color pictures.
Book Description
Mortimer Taylor Coleridge is a unique man. With a mind of rare mathematical precision, he is obsessed with imposing order upon the chaos of every day life. A once brilliant student of evolutionary biology at Columbia University, he has turned his back on a promising academic career to devote his life to selling hot dogs at Papaya Queen. And Mortimer has used his keen intellect to become the quickest and most efficient of hot dog men, devising a numerical-based system to sell hot dogs which maximizes both time and effort.
One day while watching TV, Mortimer comes upon VH1, and his life is instantly transformed. While watching
Behind the Music: No Doubt, he decides that he and Gwen Stefani are soul mates, destined to be together. When Mortimer discovers that her favorite food is a Papaya Queen hot dog, he dedicates his life to preparing for the day, which he knows will come, when Gwen Stefani will walk into the Papaya Queen where he works, order a frankfurter and fall in love with him.
In the comic tradition of writers such as Carl Hiaasen and Lydia Millet,
Dreaming of Gwen Stefani takes our culture's obsession with celebrity to its logical-or illogical-conclusion.
Customer Reviews:
Love Gwen, disliked the book.......2007-09-06
I really didn't like this book at all. Perhaps this book would have seemed better too me if i hadn't already read A confederacy of Dunces, but either way it just seemed like a waste of time.
Great book, and im not just saying that!.......2007-03-27
So i thought this book was really good, i found all the information very interesting. A lot of things I did not know. I also enjoy the storyline of mortemer. Very different, yet exciting. Read it!
A wonderfully fun read.......2007-03-13
Mandery tells a great story about searching for the true meaning of life and love. His writing is super smart, thought-provoking, and very funny. Mortimer Taylor Coleridge is a fantastically kooky character whose life adventures were highly entertaining to read. I really enjoyed this book and am looking forward to reading much more of Mandery's work.
Yes, it's Confederacy of Dunces for the VH1 generation.......2007-03-06
An able satirist, Evan Mandery brings humor and insight into the odd society that treats the trial of the fate of a former porn star's body as though it were Brown v. Board of Ed and the death of a former princess and her inebriated beau in a car accident into a Shakespearean tragedy. He does this through the lens of his narrator, Mortimer Taylor, a Columbia drop out who applies mathematical theory into brining efficiency to placing hot dogs into their buns at his job at Papaya Queen and reads Gwen Stefani lyrics as though he were studying Keats. This short entertain will entertain many a reader, at least those able to laugh at the absurdities of our modern society.
Humor that makes you think.......2007-03-04
It would be hard to improve upon the words of Jay McInerney (author of Bright Lights, Big City) who said that this book is "a quirky and compelling riff..."
To his words, I'd add that this isn't just a work of humor. This is a book that makes the reader think about our current culture and how each of us thinks. As you read it, you'll think about your own life, how far you may have gone in the pursuit of past obsessions and what you might do in the protagonist's place. Put simply, it makes you think!

Book Description
A burger and a hot dog
One day had a nasty spat.
The burger got insulted
'Cause the hot dog called him flat...
So what happened after that? Well, you'll have to look inside this book to find out. Because, you see, there is a whole world out there in which burgers, hot dogs, sticky buns, ice-cream bars, bologna, popcorn, and all sorts of other food folks exist together and do and go through all the daily stuff we all do. But it's only folks like Jim Aylesworth, together with artist Stephen Gammell, who can bring to us that world in a collection of hilarious rhymes and pictures. After all, what happens when a bunch of sugar cookies give a bagel a hard time, or an ice-cream bar gets stranded on a beach, or a couple of pickles go out dancing?...Well, come on in and see! And when you're done, try to invent some food folks of your own.

Whimsical rhymes.......2001-12-16
The burger and hot dog had a fight one day - and other food groups soon enter the world of talking, walking foods. From boppin corn which loves to dance until they pop to an orange who falls in love with a lemon, Burger And The Hot Dog provides whimsical rhymes by Jim Aylesworth and Stephen Gammell's fun drawings.
Product Description
This book/CD set features 25 twangy intermediate-to-advanced solos in the classic honky tonk style. If you love the sound of a twangy Telecaster guitar, you will enjoy learning the solos in this book. It is the best classic country solos book available!
This is an intermediate to advanced book for players having basic skills. However, a brave and ambitious beginner might be able to tackle the slower solos.
The solos contain many great LICKS and IDEAS that can be used by a creative onstage country guitarist.
All solos are written in TAB and standard notation, and recorded on the companion CD.
Few styles of music have enjoyed the widespread and enduring popularity of country music. Through the years, country music has developed from the rural Southern string band sound to the raw honky-tonk of the postwar period, the Nashville pop sounds of the late 50s and 60s, and finally the overly slick commercial sound of today.
The solos in this book sound like the breaks one might hear on classic recordings by Merle Haggard, Buck Owens, Lefty Frizell, George Jones, and similar artists who defined the exciting honky-tonk sound of the 50s to late 60sbefore rampant commercialism eliminated virtually all originality and feeling from popular country guitar solos.
Several hundred popular country recordings were researched to come up with the 25 chord progressions in this book. Each progression was found to be common to several popular songs.
A solo incorporating various concepts and techniques was composed to each progression. The result is an authentic sounding collection of country guitar solos through which various ideas can be analyzed.
Book Description
In his 18th collection of the fabulous comic strip, FoxTrot creator Bill Amend delivers a look at teen and family life that is consistently fresh, irreverent, and wacky. The antics of adolescent siblings Jason, Peter, and Paige try parents Roger and Andy but deliver laughs to readers as they're drawn into their chaotic world.
The wildly popular and enduring strip has won-and kept-fans nationwide, as they keep coming back for more of the crazy life of the Fox family. Amend keeps his comedy fresh by dipping into the pop culture pool, which never fails to provide plenty of fodder for him to parody brilliantly.
Customer Reviews:
The FoxTrot Gang are a Real Crack-Up.......2007-02-17
I have been a faithful FoxTrot reader for years. Roger, Andy and their kids Peter, Paige and Jason are always good for a reality check with a large dose of laughter. I've got two girls and let me tell you, I see a lot of my kids in Paige with, I believe, even a healthy dose of Jason thrown in. And they have Peter's bottomless stomach. Of course, they're faithful FoxTrot readers too. I used to read the strip to them, explain what was going on, but now they get it just fine and we three all laugh together. Then my girls try and explain the strip to their dad, who pretends he doesn't get it.
The FoxTrot folks are a great family, one we sort of got used to checking up on every day, so we took the news that Mr. Amend was going to cease daily distribution of his wonderfully funny people and turn his strip to Sunday only, with a bit of sadness. Still, we have these terrific FoxTrot books to keep us going with our FoxTrot fix. Mr. Amend is to be commended for his great gift to our culture and his great gift to so many lives. I truly believe a laugh a day, helps keep the blues away and the FoxTrot gang are always good for a laugh. Heck there are a lot of laughs in the FoxTrot books. I know, I have them all and I am, along with my girls and my hubby dear, eagerly awaiting the next one.
Oh yes, I forgot to mention, we don't have an iguana, but my girls do have a pet gecko and, you guessed it, his name is Quincy.
My Hot Dog Went Out, Can I Have Another? Foxtrot, All Great!.......2007-01-19
I've been a Foxtrot reader for a long time and personally I think there is something suspicoulsly wrong with people who don't find Bill Amend's characters funny as all get out. If you want a good laugh, check out Bill in your local newpaper, or better yet, get one of the Foxtrot books. They are all great, really, they are.
Like many of Mr. Amend's fans I'm a bit disappointed that he's switching his strip to Sunday-only, but fortuantly I can still read him daily in the Foxtrot books. Get them one and all and you can keep right on a laughing.
Best Foxtrot Book in Years!.......2005-10-26
This is the best collection of Foxtrot cartoons in quite a few years. I love the comic, but normally don't laugh much. This collection had me laughing out loud numerous times. BUY NOW!!!
Fun book .......2005-10-16
This was a fun book to read with my son. He actually wanted to read.
Another great collection.......2005-10-12
Bill Amend does it again. This is another great collection of Foxtrot comics. It features another of Roger's attempt to create a perfect barbecue that turns into a Fourth of July fireworks and Peter and Jason wondering whether Bruce Springsteen gets his inspiration from watching Roger's attempt at barbecuing. This is another great addition to your collection.
Customer Reviews:
Nice reading, but I was hoping for more on dachshunds!!.......2006-05-06
This was my first introduction to the Melanie Travis mystery series. I enjoyed it! I picked it up because it was about a dachshund, as I have one of my own. I was a bit disappointed because there were few mentions of dachshunds and tons of mentions of poodles and dog shows. I did learn quite a bit about the life of poodles and dog shows, though! I see that the author owns six poodles (per the book jacket) so it all makes sense. I guess if I want to read more about doxies like this, I need to find an author who owns doxies! :)
Overall, the book was a nice paced mystery and kept my attention at all times. I see that the series are all about dogs, which I think is great! There is just enough romance and relationship plots as well to keep me happy. I plan to read some more of this series.
You probably have to be in dogs in some way to enjoy.......2004-06-02
And since I am, I REALLY REALLY do.
I don't do conformation, but lots of other dog sports. And I find it a very enjoyable bubble gum book. Definately a great summer read.
A day brightener.......2004-05-06
I've enjoyed most of Laurien Berenson's books, and this one was better again. - she really is maturing as a writer. The dialogue is great and she brings just the right amount of "attitude" to Melanie Travis.
The plus is that this is a doggy book. Melanie inhabits a world of dogs and doggy people. If you've ever been part of that life you'll enjoy this book even more.
This was a delightful quick, light read - a day brightener.

comfortable.......2003-09-02
Hot Dog, like all the other books in Berenson's poodle/mystery, series is comfortable or as on review described it "cozy." I'm not a fan of the dog show circuit, but find the information of them fascinating. The mysteries are rather transparent and I am not sure if the mysteries are the driving force in this series or just a pleasant sub-story. We all want to follow Melanie's life and learn more about the people involved. The characters are well written and even though you can expect the outcomes you still want to stick around to learn the details. Best of all, now I know I wouldn't mind owning a poodle someday.

Ryan's first collection of poster art in full color.......2006-04-27
The first collection of poster artist Jay Ryan is both a biography and an art celebration: it gathers his works from rock clubs to galleries and arrives not alone but supplemented by essays from other involved in the music, design and poster worlds. Full-color reproductions of his works supplement these insights to create an excellent catalog of screenprint poster genius: a must for any collecting underground poster art.
Wit and Humor by the pound!.......2006-01-11
This book is absolutely essential for all fans of illustration, poster art, and contemporary design. One of the best books you will find on an american poster artist, the layout is top-notch with original drawings for some of Jay's posters next to the finished pieces. Having watched Jay make his work for Ten years, it is great to see such a powerful survey packed into such a beautiful book.
okay so i wrote one of the essays..........2005-12-12
Maybe Narducy of Evanston is kidding, but just to clarify for the kids in New York, Los Angeles, and Berlin--this IS the Jay Ryan based in Chicago, dude. And this book of his posters should grace the collection of any art student or indie music fan...
ps. it would be great if Amazon would fix the typo in the title--it's "Decade," not "Secade."
