5 out of 5 stars Practical Aspects of Interview and Interrogation.......2007-03-09

I found this book to be very informative. A big part of my job is interview and interrogation. This book was able to put into context what I have already been doing for a number of years. I found that I was referencing the book in my head as I watched the people I was speaking with and knew by their actions how truthful or untruthful they were being. If this is the type of work you do the book is a very good read.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Gold Standard of this Field!.......2007-04-02

I used this for a training manual for my new hires as private investigators, it is hands down one of the best books ever written on interviewing and interrogation techniques. Even the experienced people were raving about the information in it. Can't ask for better than that!

5 out of 5 stars Not just the best for cops, but for any of us..........2006-11-05

If you cannot afford the expensive course given by Reid, or your agency is too "thrifty" to spend the money to send you, this book will give you a thorough overview. The technique is explained very well in two sections- the first part provides a synopsis of interview and interrogation essentials in some detail. Distinctions between Inerviews and Interrogations; Obtaining facts; the Interview Room; Investigator Attitude; Starting Interviews; Formulating Questions; Behavioral Analysis of Truthful and Untruthful Subjects. The second part explains the nine-step technique Reid has developed and perfected over years of use by many agencies. Written for a general reader, the writing avoids legalese and is well illustrated. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Useful Resource.......2005-09-24

As a school administrator, I find the information on interviewing and interrogation helpful in getting to the bottom of issues I previously have not been able to solve. The questioning techniques and the observation of behaviors presented in this book enable me to allow my students to tell the truth and help to solve their own issues. The resolution of these issues and the breaking down of lies and cover-up behavior is the first step to helping students make better decisions. This book is an invaluable resource in that regard.

4 out of 5 stars Good text..........2007-03-14

This is a good book for anyone going into law enforcement. I had to buy it for class, but I will be keeping it because the book will be great for reference down the road!

4 out of 5 stars Criminal Interrogation and Confessions: bias and distortion at work.......2005-09-13

Old material that has been rehashed a number of times, but it is necessary to read it in order to understand the bias that is inherent in contemporary investigations. It is clearly illustrated that there is no actual scientific approach, no consideration of alternative explanations, but instead there is only an attempt to obtain confessions. Inbau, Reid, and others have never included consideration of other, more scientifically supported discussions such as those by Gudjunsson and G. Wells. The writing in the book is not very good. It is overly simple in style, and the organization is also simple, but not informative. Read the book for history and for understanding, but not for factual, supported knowledge.

5 out of 5 stars Still the interrogator's Bible.......2000-04-05

Decades after its first edition, this is still considered the best work on interrogating a criminal suspect. The authors walk you through every step, towards the goal of clearing the innocent and eliciting confessions from the guilty. No detail or nuance is left unexplored, not only of the suspect's behavior, but of your own as well. This book is a must read for anyone involved in criminal justice.

Book Description

Proper interviewing and interrogation techniques can significantly affect the success of an investigation. This new edition of a bestseller explores the complex challenges of basic and advanced interview and interrogation techniques, focusing on determining behavior from body language, speech, and written statements. Principles of Kinesic Interview and Interrogation, Second Edition includes findings from the author's research project on demeanor, credibility, and interview and interrogation behavior conducted through the John Jay College of Criminal Justice and funded as part of a special project by the U.S. Government. These findings were presented at the American Psychological Association meeting, which shows the reach of the subject outside of the typical forensic and law enforcement markets.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Might be a useful reference for professionals.......2007-09-07

This book contains basic methods for interviews/interrogations, mostly in relation to criminal investigations by authorities. It is not by any means an intensive academic/scientific/military study, although there are such references to past studies and references, namely one by Rand Corp. in relation to the importance of interviewing victims and witnesses.

The book is seriously lacking in deeper interrogation/intel gathering methods and/or advanced strategies during interviews, although Chapter 4 has some interesting takes on "Verbal Content", along with Chapter 5's "Information Recovery and Statement-Credibility Assessment".

One seriously negative aspect is the author's failure in defining VAST cultural kinesic differences, behavioral and linguistic/verbal differences amongst varying cultures, and especially failing to address backgrounds of pathological liars and career criminal manipulators of human interaction. There wasn't even an index listing for either "pathological liars" or "cultural uniqueness/definitions of kinesic behaviors".

I tend to believe that ANY novice who has no prior investigative training and/or skills and uses this book alone, would very easily misread many natural innocent human behaviors, as well as that same novice who might easily be taken in by "professional" career criminals.

Upside: The ABSOLUTE BEST STATEMENT IN THIS BOOK, as quoted from chapter one, "The first and most important of all Basic Practical Kinesic Prinicples is: No single kinesic behavior, verbal or nonverbal, proves a person is truthful or deceptive."

Chapter 6 provides at least 92 photographs of kinesics examples in relation to nonverbal behaviors with descriptions and discussions of the examples.

Downside: Most basic negative connotations would be the interrogator's inability to REALLY discern guilt from kinesics alone, but in the ability to collect behaviors, statements, interviews, evidence, etc, that might help LEAD an investigator "closer to the truth". The other downside is the dry writing style, along with what could have been better organized materials and cultural differences, especially noting the MANY unique behaviors amongst our myriad of foreign residents in this country that could EASILY be misinterpreted by an interrogator with no prior outside cultural experiences!

4 out of 5 stars Good effort, but you should cross-reference studies.......2005-06-25

I'm up to page 200 and while I usually wait for the end of any book to write a review, I felt compelled to write one now.-----------

I want to open this review by clearly stating that no person should ever agree to be interviewed by law enforcement, guilty or innocent. No lawyer worth his hourly should ever suggest that his client be interview by law enforcement unless he is granted full immunity. The Unites States unlike our European brother countries can legally use deception to get a confession. Police investigators are powerless within the court systems. There is no reason to speak with them directly. If something needs to be confessed, it should be between your attorney and the district attorney.------------

I have law enforcement experience with the NYPD and have read most of the "lie detection" literature available. I've read the Eckman books, the Wiley Series books, and references to studies included and referred to in the Walters book which I found shortly after reading "Detecting Lies and Deceit : The Psychology of Lying and the Implications for Professional Practice" by Vrij. The Vrij book is a good read and you'll be flipping pages to get a good understanding of tests results.-------------

Let me first state from experience, that unfortunately, the NYPD uses the Lieberman approach of pop science, which the Walters book (Kinesic) accurately states, is not an effective tool. The Lieberman book titled "Never Be Lied to Again" is what appears to be on law enforcements guide on "how to" interview and interrogate. I've also witnessed interviewing where arrested persons were denied council for nearly 10 hours as multiple detectives hammered away at them while being cuffed to wooden chairs in a forced slumped position. Bathroom breaks are a privilege and only in trade if you gave them something incriminating. Under these circumstances, people will eventually break even if they did not commit the crime. When the documents were passed to the ADA, I was astonished to read that the perp had never requested a lawyer although I witnessed some of them near crying to speak to a lawyer. Interviewing tactics seem to vary and no formal rules exist. Direct accusation of suspects and a poorly played hand of poker is the method of questioning. Exactly what the above literature states NOT to do, is what appears to be commonplace. ---------

This book is not a bad book, but is misleading. The author calls quotes of research papers and studies to support his claims. The part that really annoyed me is that I read these papers prior to reading this book and his claims of support are not in context with the results of research. Research has show that law enforcement at its best was only able to detect deceit at most 50% of the time. Actually, law enforcement scored lower because overall, the national average IQ of law enforcement was 106 while the standard college test subjects IQ was higher. Law enforcement was unable to fully utilize the information provided to them either because of skepticism or because of their impeded mental dynamics.----------

This book claims in some instances that the suspect is likely to not be truthful by observation of speech and motion, which include clustering. This assumption at best can be 50% accurate. Body language is subjective and is clearly and statistically analyzed in the Vrij book, which also refers to the same authors as Walters uses. An investigator should expect an adversarial encounter, fidgeting, grooming, and other signs of normal and stress induced activities. The author does make some good points about items that manifest themselves under stress. He also points out some conversation clues that a perp could literally hand to an experience investigator that can be followed up on.-------------

Overall, this book can be used as a guide of what not to do as pointed out by the author. The author bases conclusions on lies based on stress related clustering of actions and discretion on observing these actions. The author clearly states that the interviewer should not have a bias toward the subject, but this is clearly not the case as the book progresses. The objective in this book is to get a confession although it states that a false confession is not the objective. True confession or false confession, most police departments just want the confession. Let the DA handle the specifics.-----------

Why do American police have the highest confession rates? The simple fact that the person in the "hot seat" is a suspect resulting from an investigation. The subject is law enforcements most probable perpetrator. There is a high probability that this person is guilty. With the lax rules in questioning and because criminals as a whole are not usually intelligent, confessions are not that difficult to extract. Criminals that are more affluent know enough to request an attorney as soon as they are approached by law enforcement.--------------

This book can help the pop science culture of police investigators realize their mistakes. The book will help the reader identify patterns of a subject. I would not take Walters word on "this subject is probably being deceptive" with actions pointed out in his book because most of his stressed and supposedly deceptive subjects were showing "normal" behavior under stress. His idea of changes in patterns is noteworthy. This book can also help perps derail interviews by tossing in false body language and slips to create an environment where the investigator is running in circles. This idea struck me as unique. What would happen if the interviewee were more polished on interviewing tactics then the interviewer? ------------

5 out of 5 stars Recognize Deceptive Signals in Speech & Body Language.......2005-04-21

This thoroughly researched and practical book was written by Stan Walters, a retired police interrogation specialist with over 25 years' experience. The purpose of his book is to help interrogators rely on highly successful and proven techniques in recognizing deceptive behaviors in speech quality, speech content, and especially body language.

Too often, Walters observed other questioning officers depend on 'gut instinct', racial bias, intimidation, or pre-conceived notions of the interviewee's guilt. Walters admits that police are surprisingly able to solicit false confessions, especially from mentally deficient or emotionally weak interviewees. So, his ultimate goal is to help police identify the real perpetrators of crimes via the perpetrator's own truthful confession of guilt.

In the first theoretical half of the book, Walters introduces kinesic theory (i.e. recognizing non-verbal signals) and the five stages of stress response (anger, depression, denial, bargaining, acceptance). Then he goes on to explain how these stress response stages can be identified in interviewee subjects and provides 90 photographs of subjects' body language movements.

In the second practical half of the book, Walters gives specific instructions on how to conduct interrogations, especially by customizing each interview according to the interviewee's personality type. He also explains the pitfalls of what many 'traditional' interrogators do wrong and how to avoid them. In addition, the interviewer and interviewee must speak the same native language and come from the same culture - often a problem for military interrogators.

This is an excellent practical textbook on how to conduct and secure a (truthful) confession, given a patient, practiced, and conscientious interviewer. Walters admits, however, it still takes practice and involves a lot of hard work - always reading interviewees' behaviors.

5 out of 5 stars Principles Of Kinesic Interview and Interrogation.......2002-10-04

Being a Stan Walters devotee I was pleased to find yet another rivetting publication by the guru of kinesics. Stans writing is refreshing and makes for interesting reading. The content itself is on the button. Excellent reference material for those in the business of detecting deception. I integrated the techniques described by Stan Walters with Statement Analysis techniques and find that I am now far more successful at what I do.

5 out of 5 stars A must for any Criminal Investigator.......2000-05-11

Principals of Kinesic Interview and Interrogation is a well written and well researched look into the physical and physcological traits of a deceptive person. As a criminal investigator with a large Department I have found it to be an invaluable resource. Stan Walters insights and experiences are related in understandable easy to read terms. An excellent book.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Masterpiece -- The Art and Science of Interviewing and Interrogation.......2006-05-16

This book is the benchmark by which all other books on the art and science of interviewing and interrogation should be measured. It is truly a grand tour in every sense of the term. The text covers the greatest discoveries, techniques and practices in the field, and provides valuable insights by the authors, who are widely acknowledged experts and seasoned practitioners. The historical basis for truth-determining techniques is discussed at some length. However, the book really shines in its coverage of interviewing and interrogation theories and techniques developed over the past eighty years, paralleling the great advancements in law enforcement and psychology. The authors present a concise, insightful and balanced examination of the significant theories and theoreticians in the field, all the while drawing upon their substantial knowledge and expertise when evaluating and assessing the various theories and techniques discussed throughout the book. Their observations on interrogation ethics post 9-11 are thought-provoking.

Through words and illustrations the authors bring to life verbal and non-verbal truth/falsity indicators. The two subject areas that I found particularly interesting and useful were the Forensic Assessment Interview Technique ("FAINT") and the Morgan Thematic Apperception Testing Technique ("MITT"). Although these techniques are quite sophisticated, the authors' explanations and discussions are so clear and well-presented that virtually anyone will be able to understand and appreciate them.

Several reviews commented that the book is easy to read. While that is so, the simplicity and clarity of the text belie the considerable range and depth of thought and insight that went into this book. As such, I would advise readers to slowly digest the book, one paragraph at a time, if possible, and really give the text some thought. In doing so you will most likely gain a much better appreciation of the subject matter. As someone with an extensive law enforcement and legal background who thought he knew everything there was to know about interviewing, I can honestly say that this book really expanded my knowledge and appreciation of the subject.

5 out of 5 stars Effective Interviewing and Interrogation Techniques.......2002-08-09

I have read several books on this topic in the past. I found this book to be very interesting and easy reading. It contained excellent information applicable for anyone involved in the field of interviewing.

The book was very well organized, and answered many questions for even a trained interviewer/interrogator.

I would highly recommend it for anyone in the fields of intelligence, law enforcement, private investigations or polygraph.

5 out of 5 stars This Book Delivers.......2002-05-11

I have just finished reading this book and I am thoroughly impressed with it's attention to detail, usable procedures, and overall organization. It was a very quick read, and I now feel like an expert in the art of interrogation. I am already confidently putting these new techniques into practice and seeing results. If your goal is attaining the truth in an interview situation, buy & read this book.

5 out of 5 stars An Obligatory Handbook on Interviews and Interrogations.......2001-12-01

Nathan J. Gordon, et al have authored an outstanding publication which is well documented, authoritative, well organized, and an easy read as well as a page turner. This reviewer, who has authored several textbooks on polygraph testing, highly recommends this book to anyone involved in the art and science of interviewing and interrogation.

Book Description

Shape interrogation is the process of extraction of information from a geometric model. It is a fundamental component of Computer Aided Design and Manufacturing (CAD/CAM) systems. The authors focus on shape interrogation of geometric models bounded by free-form surfaces. Free-form surfaces, also called sculptured surfaces, are widely used in the bodies of ships, automobiles and aircraft, which have both functionality and attractive shape requirements. Many electronic devices as well as consumer products are designed with aesthetic shapes, which involve free-form surfaces. This book provides the mathematical fundamentals as well as algorithms for various shape interrogation methods including nonlinear polynomial solvers, intersection problems, differential geometry of intersection curves, distance functions, curve and surface interrogation, umbilics and lines of curvature, geodesics, and offset curves and surfaces. This book will be of interest both to graduate students and professionals.

5 out of 5 stars A powerful tool for CAD/CAM research & development.......2002-10-15

Many excellent books analyze models/methods to represent curves and surfaces in Computer-Aided Design &
Manufacturing (CAD/CAM) systems, but this is the first one focusing on solving some very complex geometric
modeling problems underlying many engineering applications. The authors identify these bottleneck problems,
analyze them in detail, and present state-of-the-art solution algorithms. These important problems are:

"Intersection problems" (Chapters 5 and 6), "Distance calculations" (Chapter 7),
"Curve/Surface Interrogation" (Chapters 8 and 9), "Computation of Shortest Paths" (Chapter 10), and
"Offset Curves and Surfaces" (Chapter 11).

In each one of the above chapters, the corresponding problem is fully analyzed using tools from advanced
Geometric Modeling, Numerical Methods and Differential Geometry, some of which are new results previously
available only in research journals. The authors have done an excellent job in collecting all these results in
a single volume, offering an invaluable tool to CAD/CAM professionals who do not have the time to study
and analyze themselves all this literature.

The solutions proposed go beyond standard tricks and heuristics: the problems are formulated as systems
of nonlinear equations and reliable solution-algorithms are offered based either on standard methods or
on fresh research. Robustness issues (accuracy, treatment of special cases, singularities, etc) are at the center
of discussion guiding the reader on dealing with the most difficult aspects of geometric-software development.

In short, this book is a powerful tool for CAD/CAM professionals (software architects/developers,
consultants, engineers/users, academic teachers and researchers, etc) as:
1) Very useful results are analyzed, that alternatively are available only in advanced mathematical texts and current research publications.
2) Problems are discussed in detail using theoretical results as well as examples.
3) Robust solution methods are presented, based on a solid mathematical analysis as opposed to heuristics.
4) All prerequisites are fully analyzed in the first 4 chapters, making the volume self-contained.

5 out of 5 stars The history of the term 'radical evil'.......2003-03-09

Much discussion of the Holocaust, perhaps influenced in part by Hannah Arendt, invokes the phrase 'radical evil'. But the term springing from Kant, in his Religion Within the Limits of Reason Alone, speaks what seems a different almost technical language of the will, in the context of the critique of practical reason. There the surface complexity of the lore of Kant's distinction of Wille and Wilkur seem to obscure the analyis, although Kant, too out of fashion, and bespeaks the question with underhanded profundity. One needs perhaps to get the knack of noting, if not understanding, the implications of these abstractions blind before the noumenal dragon's lair--of what do we speak, if of the 'will'??! As Arendt seems to suggest, Kant was not quite letting on.
This work is an invaluable history and compendium to any discussion of 'radical evil', and of the passage of the them via Kant through Hegel and Schelling to Nietzsche and Freud, concluding with the post-Holocaust thinkers Levinas, Johas, Arendt. This history should be better known in an age when the discussion is either positivistic discussion of the next robot advance in value free science or some mythical strain from the spiritual Hollywoods of too long ago. After Kant, 'at war with himself'(the point is debatable),the author critiques Hegel's great system with the sure fate of this question in a tighly conceived teleology, and then the surprisingly refreshing views of the less well known Schelling. It is hard to take the analysis of the inscrutable beyond these seminal sources (in my view,I find Nietzsche less profound that his reputation would suggest), but the remaining discussions are compelling none the less as the question explodes from its airy quality in the context of the twentieth century. Very fine study, although one might have thought Marx/anti-Marx a pole of this history. The question of 'radical evil' in relation to Hannah Arendt is also considered in the author's Hannah Arendt and the Jewish question.

Book Description

U.S. Army intelligence relies on the tactics of intelligence interrogation to assess and combat enemy forces, but recent events at the Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq revealed violations of the rules of intelligence interrogation and human rights, officially codified in the U.S. Army Intelligence and Interrogation Handbook. Herein are the precise and regulated procedures and principles of interrogation, which must be followed to conduct meaningful interrogations and prevent violations that led to the questionable tactics of prison soldiers at Abu Ghraib.
The U.S. Army Intelligence and Interrogation Handbook features the established procedures of the U.S. Army to conduct intelligence interrogations,
under the constraints established by the Hague and Geneva Conventions, and the Uniform Code of Military Justice. This invaluable resource lays out clear guidelines for the interrogation process, the role of the interrogator, handling captured enemy documents, and the direction and supervision of intelligence interrogation. It also includes information about the relationship between interrogation and its operational environment, debriefing strategy, and the construction and use of joint interrogation facilities. Principles and tactics include:
* Principles of interrogation * Capabilities and limitations of interrogators * Interrogator training * Intelligence cycle * Screening sources * Counterintelligence * Command, tasking, support, and interrogator relationships * Components of strategic intelligence * And many more important devices used and tested in actual military operations.

5 out of 5 stars The Rules, The Real Rules.......2005-05-27

One time in the Army I was being sent from here to there. I was put on a bus at some ridiculous hour like 3 or 4 in the morning. After a few hours on the bus we were let off in front of huge building with the words, "Go find the sign that says where you are going and wait under the sign."

There was no sign for where I was going. With great trepidation I went to find a sargeant and asked, "Where's my sign."

"You're not supposed to be here for another twelve hours, what are you doing here so early?"

What I wanted to say was that I was calmly asleep when some sargeant started yelling at me to get up, get dressed and get on this stupid bus that took me to here.

But I didn't think that that was wise, I don't remember just what I said. Anyway I was told to come back in twelve hours. I left there quickly.

In World War II German prisoners were taken to a large room and told to go stand under the sign of the unit to which they were assigned. If they couldn't find a sign they eventually went to a sargeant and asked. The sargeant would make a new sign for his unit. And the Army would then know that a new unit had been moved onto the battlefield. Something important for the Army to know, and something the soldiers had been told not to tell -- name, rank and serial number remember.

Here are the rules, and no, they do not include flushing the Qur'an down the toilet.

Book Description

As we near the seventieth anniversary of the founding of the Third Reich, its repressive regime and the catastrophic war it spawned continue to fascinate and horrify the public's imagination. Interrogations: The Nazi Elite in Allied Hands, 1945 fills a gap in the history of the Second World War, allowing us for the first time to witness the initial interrogations of the German high command in the summer of 1945 by the American, British, and Russian allies. It was in these crucial early interviews that the Allies first learned the true nature of the Third Reich and discovered the dimensions of the Nazis' Final Solution.

Acclaimed British historian Richard Overy makes brilliant use of the interrogation transcripts to re-create a picture of Germany in its lowest hour, with snapshot portraits of Göring, Speer, von Ribbentrop, and Hess in their own words.

Through Interrogations, the reader comes face-to-face with a regime in its death throes and with a world struggling to understand what had really been perpetrated within the gigantic fortress of Hitler's reich.

4 out of 5 stars Informative and Confronting.......2007-10-09

It's a good read as history and for the legal intrigues but I wasn't warned about the macabre photos. Nonetheless it's well written and good reference material documenting that part of history.

5 out of 5 stars Insight Into Terror.......2007-01-17

While at times overwhelming in both size and scope, "Interrogations: The Nazi Elite in Allied Hands, 1945" is a necessary addition to works about the Holocaust. Richard Overy has done a tremendous job at organizing and summarizing the transcripts taken from Nazi war criminals during the Nuremberg trials. In Part One he clarifies history and sets the stage for Part Two, where the words of the guilty speak for themselves.

To even conceive of a trial of Nazi war criminals was a tremendous undertaking that faced the Allies towards the end of WWII. Knowing that Hitler and his ministers of evil would take the stand in court, they feared that his charisma could sway opinion and break through the flimsy-seeming charges. Perhaps the world was spared this circus event through the cowardice of Hitler and others of his entourage who took their own lives at war's end, but one has to wonder what it would have been like.

The Allies were able to cooperate and create a tribunal to try these war criminals, and spent hours interrogating them to find out their exact knowledge of Hitler and his plans. The flimsiest part of the charge was that of conspiracy to wage aggressive war - there were no documents to support any conspiracy charge, which intelligent and adept Nazi members in prison knew. Yet the Allies pressed ahead, knowing that some men would deny any knowledge, or blame everything upon Hitler or his other dead officers, and in at least one case, feign amnesia to disrupt the interrogations.

What comes across in Part Two of Overy's book is the brazen attitude of all of the men who were tried during this tribunal. Overwhelmingly, these men either denied their roles or took resolute pride in what they accomplished, downplaying the death figures or depicting themselves as turncoats trapped under Hitler's sway with no exit. It is chilling and insightful at the same time to read the testimony of these men, men who murdered millions nonchalantly and knew Hitler intimately. And even though the majority of these men were convicted and executed, it still feels as if justice has not been achieved for the terror that they perpetrated.

5 out of 5 stars Mentality of Atrocity.......2005-09-10

I guess most people ask themselves at some time, how do rational, seemingly decent human beings come to the point of sanctioning, organising and then carrying out the systematic destruction of around 11 million people, (give or take), with 6 million of them being Jewish? It is a tough one, and it is even tougher to understand, should one even want to try understanding it.

"Interrogations" by Richard Overy goes some way into seeing how those brought to trial at Nuremberg dealt with the reality of what they had done and how they tried to explain it. The book gives some background information on the charges brought against them, the people carrying out the interrogations and so on. There are a couple of chapters on individuals such as Goering, Hess and Von Papen. Other chapters are based on topical issues, like genocide, Hitler himself, and so on.

It is interesting the way which legal implications of the trials developed. One example is the way in which organisations themselves were deemed "criminal" and then anyone associated with them was open to arrest. The Nazi prisoners protested the move, of course.

Of the individuals, I found Goering the most fascinating, in the sense that he did not seem to attempt any avoidance of responsibility. Others tried to distance themselves, or in the case of Speer, tried to show himself as a neutral civil servant. Goering never seemed to do that, and just accepted his part in it.

People interested in the Nazi phenomena and the Holocaust of the Jews and other victims of the Nazi death camps, "Interrogations" is "essential reading", as another reviewer stated. Thoroughly engrossing and thoroughly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Essential reading .......2004-12-02

This book is essential reading for those who have read much of the European theatre of World War II and even more particularly of the Hitler regime. The transcripts of the interrogations and the submitted writings of Albert Speer alone make this book a must read- if you have read enough on these subjects you will recognize the source material the historians have relied upon, including Kershaw's excellent two volume biography of Hitler.

This book covers the gap between the end of WWII in Europe, with Nazi leaders either on the run or committing suicide, and the commencement of the Nuremberg trials. During this interim, a number of interrogations occurred with the principals determined to be culpable and subject to trial. It was very interesting to read the words of those closest to Hitler- Speer, Ribbentrop, Guderian, etc. Ribbentrop, especially, confirms his incompetence during questioning and it is not beyond belief that his defense of ignorance may in fact be true.

But it is Speer to whom the reader will recognize as the most intelligent and competent of the captured. He could not gain closer access to Hitler due to Boerrman in the later years and this may have proved to be a great tragedy for Germany. I will next read his "Inside the Third Reich" given this book.

Overall, an excellent contribution to the history of the Third Reich and highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Chilling, insightful.......2004-07-31

There has been much analysis of the deeds, motives and consequences of Germany's Nazis, some of it brilliant, some of it rubbish, much in between. But there is simply no substitute for their actual words.
Thanks to the exhaustive interviews conducted by the allies prepatory to the Nuremberg trials and the organizing and editing skills of Richard Overy, today's readers have easy access to many of those words.
"Interrogations" lays bare the banality of evil, the chilling hate and the mindless obedience of Nazi war criminals. They also present a comprehensive account of the workings of Nazi Germany, including the leadership of Adolph Hitler. More so then in his own writings, Hitler's architect, Albert Speer provides a richly detailed account of his and Hitler's activities and mindset.
Indeed the mindset of the various interviewees is compelling subject matter to ponder. Many seem to realize in retrospect what a terrible mistake they had made. They practically seem to be speaking of someone else as they openly discuss their participation in the horrors of the Nazi regime. The detestable Herman Goring is an exception suggesting no regrets about actions or beliefs.
The book is divided by subject matter, including genocide, perspectives on Hitler, the waging of War and Rudolph Hess. Those interrogated include Speer, Goering, Joachin von Ribbentorp and Alfred Jodl.
Overy does a masterful job of introducing the topics and the people, providing background and perspectives.
"Interrogations" is an important addition to the library of any student of World War II and of the Holocaust. It also stands well by itself as a fascinating study of human nature at its most destructive.

I highly recommend this book to new employees to use as a framework and for the experienced employees to add to their tool box.

1 out of 5 stars Advanced.....right...........2006-08-05

As a graduate of the basic and advanced Reid interrogation seminars, and having conducted a few interrogations of my own, I picked this book up with the expectation of "advanced" techniques. Especially since the guy who wrote it was with the bureau. But instead the book has the standard techniques. Thier is absolutely NOTHING new or advanced about this book. This book provides training about as good as the basic patrolman gets at the academy. However, this is just my opinion, pick up the book and see what you think, but as for me I wish I had saved my money. Thanks for your time.
