A masterpiece of modern Gothic literature, Something Wicked This Way Comes is the memorable story of two boys, James Nightshade and William Halloway, and the evil that grips their small Midwestern town with the arrival of a "dark carnival" one Autumn midnight. How these two innocents, both age 13, save the souls of the town (as well as their own), makes for compelling reading on timeless themes. What would you do if your secret wishes could be granted by the mysterious ringmaster Mr. Dark? Bradbury excels in revealing the dark side that exists in us all, teaching us ultimately to celebrate the shadows rather than fear them. In many ways, this is a companion piece to his joyful, nostalgia-drenched Dandelion Wine, in which Bradbury presented us with one perfect summer as seen through the eyes of a 12-year-old. In Something Wicked This Way Comes, he deftly explores the fearsome delights of one perfectly terrifying, unforgettable autumn. --Stanley Wiater

Book Description

The carnival rolls in sometime after midnight, ushering in Halloween a week early. The shrill siren song of a calliope beckons to all with a seductive promise of dreams and youth regained. In this season of dying, Cooger & Dark's Pandemonium Shadow Show has come to Green Town, Illinois, to destroy every life touched by its strange and sinister mystery. And two boys will discover the secret of its smoke, mazes, and mirrors; two friends who will soon know all too well the heavy cost of wishes. . .and the stuff of nightmare.

Few American novels written this century have endured in the heart and memory as has Ray Bradbury's unparalleled literary classic SOMETHING WICKED THIS WAY COMES. A good old creepy carny type story.

The wicked in the title refers to the travelling sideshow/fun fair/show or whatever you want to call it attraction that rolls into a nowheresville USA town. Bad things start happening because of this creepy joint, and two boys end up in the thick of the action trying to work out what they can do to stop all the dastardly goings-on.

2 out of 5 stars An American Classic huh? .......2007-05-17

I will get directly to the point, which is something the author found difficult to do in this book.

This is one of the most disjointed, incomprehensible novels I have ever tried to read. I think this book is the most clear case of an author's vanity that I have ever seen. Do you ever get the feeling (when you're reading a novel) that the author is so very proud of the colorful language he has just scattered across the page that he can scarcely help himself from trying to top his last success at articulation? That is the way this book reads, like a perfect example of an author's vanity getting away from him.
I grew up with this movie (and loved it!). This is one instance where I can honestly say that the movie was way better than the book. The book took too long to get anywhere, tried to introduce motives for characters' actions that never seemed to make any sense (to any normal person anyway), and was generally boring.
So, whatever you do, stay clear of this book. Jump, skip, skidattle-crack your way on down the road to another book (yes this is my attempt to imitate Bradbury's annoying descriptive style in this book). You will not find anything that you liked about Farenheit 451 (another book by this author) in here.

5 out of 5 stars Great Condition and perfect!.......2007-03-08

This was an awesome book and in great condition. Got it fast.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing book...incredibly poetic, fantastically vivid imagery.......2007-03-05

I read Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury about a year ago, and was amazed by it. I loved how painfully true the story was becoming...I also was enchanted by the beautiful writing. So obviously, I had to check out more works by this wonderful author. I purchased Dandelion Wine, and Something Wicked This Way Comes.

This book far exceeded my expectations. Though a few parts of the book are drawn out and uninteresting, the majority of it is fantastically written, with lots of beautiful imagery. The ending was very unexpected, but cute and thoughtful.

Is it as good as Fahrenheit 451? I wouldn't compare the two, but I enjoyed this book slightly more, though Fahrenheit 451's message is more true. Five big fat shiny stars for Something Wicked This Way Comes.

3 out of 5 stars The Wicked is pretty Wicked.......2007-01-28

I read Something Wicked This Way Comes by Ray Bradbury. I give this book a 3 star rating. The author takes a long time to get to the point, so it's a little boring. If you don't understand metaphors then you probably wouldn't want to read this book.
Something Wicked This Way Comes is mainly about two thirteen-year-old boys, who are best friends, experiencing the wrath of evil. It all starts with a flyer that says "Crooger and Dark's Pandemonium Side Show". Will Halloway and Jim Nightshade, the best friends, find this flyer. At three o'clock in the morning, they see the carnival roll in. Once they visit the carnival they quickly find out that there is something not right. The main attraction is the "Freak" show and the Mirror Maze will suck you in and you will never come out. Will and Jim visited the carnival one night and the "Freaks" caught them. The boys' got away but the "Freaks" hunted them down. Once the boys' and Charles Halloway were caught all it took was a little love for the "Freaks" and the carnival to go away.
Will Halloway is one of the main characters in the book. He thinks about danger much more than Jim. Will was afraid to go to the Mirror Maze because he saw evil in it. Although, as the story unfolds, he becomes more confident. He shows this by cutting the witches balloon. Jim Nightshade is a main character also. He is the exact opposite of Will. Jim is a daredevil and carefree. He wanted to experience the wrath of the carnival and fight the evil. Jim shows that he is afraid of nothing by wondering the streets at night and going to the carnival a couple times alone before Will went with him.
If you think or know that you enjoyed Something Wicked This Way Comes by Ray Bradbury then you would enjoy A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L'Engle, All Summer in a Day by Ray Bradbury, and The Veldt by Ray Bradbury. I am a seventh grade student in North Carolina.

5 out of 5 stars Definitely Wicked.......2007-06-12

The third book in the Malloren series, Something Wicked, Elf's story, is more on par with the first delightful book.

Elf, the twin sister of Cyn, has always longed for adventure and at age 25 resigns herself to the fate of spinsterhood. Elf longs for the one man she knows she can never have, family nemesis Fort Ware, the Earl of Walgrave. Fort carries hatred for the Malloren's that not only goes back to a long standing family fued, but the incident in which Fort has to shoot and kill his mad father. He blames the Malloren's for forcing this event into play, but the truth is he hates himself far more than anyone else and at times has hoped for death at the hands of the Mallorens. When a masked and disguised Elf stumbles across a couple of men plotting to kill the king, she is horrified to discover one of the pair is Fort. Fort, believing she is a French woman named Lissette, ties her up and takes her to his house where he is surprised to find he is attracted to her. Fort, suffering from depression over his father's and his own actions, has not been able to enjoy women in months...he offers Lissette the position of mistress and she refuses. Elf "Lisette" escapes but decides she wants one night with Fort and so disguises herself again as Lisette, and then finds and seduces Fort. We are next thrown into a grand adventure of treason, betrayal and passion at its rawest.

This book was so awesome mostly because of the revealed emotions of the hero and heroine. I love when an author lets you see inside a character to see all the emotions, lust, hate, love, both the good and the bad. Elf was delightful because she is strong, spirited and fun but not self destructive. Fort's intensity in everything he does whether its hate, sex, love is just great...unlike one of the characters in the previous books, he is allowed to have the feelings, even unreasonable, because he recognizes that they are unreasonable and acknowledges his own fault in his disasters. I hope Brand's story is half as good as this one.

4 out of 5 stars a most unsuitable man, jo beverly.......2007-01-08

first off i gotta say that i loved the mallorens, so i may not be the most impartial reviewer. i liked "an unsuitable man" mostly because the female lead, was a strong woman, who took a some hard knocks, picked herself right back up, got on with her life and went after the things she knew would make her happy. i'm not gonna get into plot at all, the book flowed well and kept my interest from cover to cover.

2 out of 5 stars Didn't care for it at all, she pursued the guy the entire book.......2006-10-09

Shesh, the heroine kept throwing herself at the guy the entire time, sending him gifts and slept with him, but he hated her family (and her). I realize it was the love of her life and all, but she shoulda had more self respect.

1 out of 5 stars Unlikable characters.......2006-08-15

This book was horrible. The characters weren't very intelligent or likable. Elf (what a name!) is just a nimrod who thinks she's smart. And Fort (I kind of do like his name) is laughable as a hero or a seducer. He actually gave a speech to her about how he would handle any unexpected pregnancies while trying to get her into bed. So wierd.

Bad writing, bad characters.

2 out of 5 stars Something boring........2006-06-20

I was thoroughly unhappy with Fort in "My Lady Notorious." I was not especially excited to read about him in "Something Wicked," but the reviews were promising. I should have stuck with my first instinct.

This book was incredibly boring. I found most of it to be about the plot against the king. I prefer not to have a whole lot of subplots in my romance novels.

Fort was not a likable hero. He sired two children out of wedlock and only supported them financially. What a jerk! I don't care if that was how things worked in the mid-18th century - I prefer my heroes to be a little more noble than that.

Elf bordered on desperate. Fort didn't deserve the attention or pursuit she afforded him. I think Fort should have realized his folly and pursued Elf. He was the jerk all along and should have been the one to lose his pride and pay the price.

Fort thoroughly debauches Elf and her brothers barely batted an eye. It seemed out of character for all of the Mallorens. And speaking of out of character, where was Elf's spunk? She became a doormat and showed very little backbone in dealing with Fort.

Some reviewers here on Amazon have commented on this book's sizzle. I have to say - I completely disagree. There were only a couple of sex scenes and they were short and very undetailed. If you are someone who likes vague, veiled sex scenes, this book's for you.

The ending seemed abrupt and a disappointing ending for such a long, drawn-out story.

I wouldn't waste my time with this one.

Everyone--including mystery bookstore owner Annie Laurance--loves Arsenic and Old Lace.  But something wicked is poisoned a local summer stock production as cast members stab each other in the back and props are sabotaged.  Worst of all, the star, aging Hollywood beach-blanket hunk Shane Petree, butchers his lines--while getting top billing in bed with wives and teenage daughters around town.  No wonder somebody wants to draw his final curtain.  With a little help from Miss Marple, Poirot, and Agatha the Bookstore Cat, a pompous prosecutor tries to pin a murder on Max, Annie's own leading man.  Unless Annie can prove her darling's innocence, their wedding date's off!  Invoking the tried-and-true methods of her favorite literary sleuths, Annie snoops around the greasepaint and glitter of the show-stopper scene if she doesn't watch it, because theatrical murderers never play fair.

    5 out of 5 stars A Great Mystery series.......2006-12-30

Carolyn G. hart is definately one of the best mystery authors out there. Her stories are very captivating and interesting and a fun easy read. If you like a cozy mystery give Hart a try with her Annie Darling mysteries. Annie is a great charcter and she is always surrounded by a cast of crazy characters that make her life more exciting. She is a bookshop owner... so a few murders are obviously constantly popping up on her doorstep.

3 out of 5 stars Murder abounds in Broward's Rock.......2006-09-08

This is the third in the Death on Demand series. In it we have Annie and Max involved in summer theatre. They are part of the cast in "Arsenic and Old Lace". Weird things seem to be happening on the set of the rehersal stage, and then someone turns up dead. Annie is even more motivated to solve the case herself because her fiance has been accused of the crime. The book was pretty good, and it kept me turning pages, but I must admit that the characterization of the Circuit Court Judge, Posey, was a bit over the top. I don't think anyone could be as obtuse and objectionable as Ms. Hart portrayed him to be. It was overdone, and I think the idea of Annie and now Max being accused of murdering someone has been over-worked. Hopefully in the next book there are other suspects besides this precious pair.

5 out of 5 stars Red Bicycle Zipping Through Scenes. Macbeth Bleeding Through Time. Wedding Bell Bliss.......2006-03-24

This third offering in Hart's DEATH ON DEMAND series has fully received the advantage of repeated features building upon themselves and establishing immediate reader intimacy. I was anticipating (and not disappointed) the repetition of key elements, one of which was the first couple chapters (prior to the entrance of Annie and Agatha) being crisp, brief, chilling dips to the murderous "footprints" in the novel. I don't know if it was because I've come to expect this type of sly entry into Hart's Annie & Max series, or if it's because the author's style has leap-frogged itself, solidifying into better and better types of seasoning... but, the initiating chapters seemed to have zapped up a few levels in mood and intrigue, as chilling stage setters for Annie's warm and perky entrance, which seemed even warmer and perkier than the prior 2 books which were already at what seemed to be peaks of performance.

The anticipated Annie and Max personality mixes moved quickly into cozy entertainment, possibly due to the decrease of tension from earlier struggles toward (and away from) a serious relationship. Sometimes the fun fizzles after the fish is caught. But, in this case, I felt heightened entertainment from the interplay between these two formally engaged characters heading toward a marriage ceremony. It was warming to observe the couple's dance into win/win scenarios, their balancing of each others' foibles, though Max, from my perspective has few if any flaws. If God were to Himself descend to visit the planet, I'd imagine Him in the attitude of Max's easy going nature. The Max Gestalt would fit like a Divine Glove. He not only has confidence, class, and pizzazz; he has endearing vulnerabilities (and no guilt over being wealthy).

I relished Annie's growth into a periodic ability to relax with Max, as it began sinking in that she was no longer fighting their inevitable connection. The drive to "The Great Gatsby Party" at the Petree's was sheer reader luxury, settling into savoring the environmental elegance of Broward's Rock, through Annie's eyes. (Beauty doesn't descend well into the atmosphere of a pushy/shovey cranky mood, though that mood has it's own appeal.) I wondered if, prior to allowing Max into her life as he was destined, as her everything partner, Annie ever fully allowed herself to wallow in the silent beauty of a sunset before it had set, to register a pleasant summer breeze studded with Jasmine and Gardenia, to study puffy clouds drifting in a pale blue sky. Max was so good at loosening Annie's uptight laces, it was easy to miss some of the nuances of his technique.

On the other hand, I enjoyed Annie's ability to easily, even gracefully, sidestep Max's head-for-the-bedroom overtures, and "get to the party on time." I loved the way Annie avoided taking the typical romantic road-fork of not showing up at the party, due to diving onto the mattress, and heating up the sheets. Both Annie and Max relished her gentle (uncommonly) nudge out of the house and into the glorious evening of a gorgeously staged world settled cozily into a rangy resort island.

Unfortunately, or fortunately as the case may be taken, the party didn't end in divine delight. Hey. This is a mystery, right? Gotta have the "bloody" scene... this time with a false taint slurred at Annie, which made me want to spit fire for her.

The subplot/plot weaving provided more style contrast and mood swing in this third DOD novel:

    - We had the dreaded (but humorous) phone calls from Max's mother, Laurel, with attempts to design Annie & Max's wedding into an International, New Age carnival.

    - We had the additions of name, title, and plot dropping of Annie's well stocked mystery repertoire, which will be even more interesting to me as I continue reading mysteries and reread this series (at the moment I recognize about 3% of them, yet I continue to appreciate the opportunity to expand my mystery vocab).

    - We had the clue conversations over coffee or meals at DOD and Annie or Max's homes.

    - We had the more active scenes of getting out there and gathering clues, at risk.

    - And we had the ongoing ambiance around rehearsals of the play (Arsenic and Old Lace, which came across very well even to a reader like me, who hasn't read it yet).

Then, of course we had the delight of Henny's shenanigans of acting out various characters in various mysteries, via phone calls, zips through town on her flashy red bicycle, and personal drop-ins to visit Annie at Death on Demand. Through all this, Henny's character was surged (almost to nova) into a zany superwoman. By the end of the book, Henny had turbo-charged out of the muck of being basically an unlikeable but intriguing dud (in the first two books Henny entertained the plot as an irritant adding a bit of spice at her own expense).

Yup. As listed above, this third offering in the DOD series has definitely kicked up a few notches (speaking of which, note the lawyer hilariously toting cliches in his wake) in various types of "zap," mood/scene contrast, action, and intrigue.

The whole shebang heated up nicely as Annie began the chicken-sans-head rush, spinning wheels around Broward Rock in multiple mad dashes to save Max from the evidence frame-up and from the railroading attempt by the dark-cartoon-buffoon, horrifying imitation of Perry Mason (circuit solicitor Brice Willard Posey) attempting to wrap bars around Max's freedom. In this heated spinning, Annie sloughed off Laurel's phone calls, allowing the wedding ceremony's pre-planning acrobatics to get out of hand by way of Laurel's heavenly convolutions (which were Annie's unadulterated nightmares).

Then we also had the sad surprise of the species of the first murder victim, whereas the second corpse was no surprise, and the third murder was ...

The final scene, apres the culprit discovery and apprehension, was truly a bang of a bash, reminding me of Annie's thought about midway into the book, during a pleasant part of a rehearsal scene, about how great she felt being part of "something good." Of course I flashed on the contrast parallel to the title of this mystery, and was reminded of Laurel's off-base comment that Love on Demand would be a better name for Annie's bookstore.

There's LOTS going on in this novel, but it all plays together perfectly through the ongoing reading, and ties together lusciously in the ending chapters. Cheers & stamping feet. Yes!

Definitely a book to buy and read, more than once.

    Linda G. Shelnutt

4 out of 5 stars Annie and Max join the theater.......2002-06-02

Annie Laurance and Max Darling take part in a summer stock production of "Arsenic and Old Lace". They enjoy it until someone starts sabatoging the rehearsals and the ego of Shane, a former player in surfer movies, begins to grate on all of the cast members. When a murder occurs, Max seems to be the most likely perpetrator and Annie has to do some fast detective work to convince the local police that Max is innocent. Comic relief is provided by Max's mother, who keeps coming up with "creative" ideas for Max and Annie's wedding. This is another enjoyable cozy by Carolyn Hart.

4 out of 5 stars An enjoyable Max and Annie book!.......2001-12-16

I agree with other reviewers that this is not her best work to date. There are other Death on Demand mysteries out there that are much more enjoyable. However, this is still an enjoyable read.

Annie is a typical woman running her own business. She has many problems of her own and many issues she is working out for herself through out this series. Max is a rich man who doesn't need to work, but who loves Annie enough to do what she would like him to do. (To a degree!) While they work out their own lives together, they also happen to solve mysteries.

The setting is nice and the characters are fun. The plot is convoluted. I enjoyed this book, but did find it hard to follow everything that was going on at times.

    Enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars Evelyn Vaughn has created a superb Grail Keeper romantic suspense.......2006-04-30

SOMMETHING WICKED is another great read from Evelyn Vaughn (Von Jocks). It's the second book from Vaughn in the fascinating Grail Keepers series put out by Bombshell. The story opens when Katie Trillo comes home to find that her sister, Diana, has just been murdered and the killer is still there. Katie fights him and almost loses her own life. In an odd twist, she asks him his name and then uses it against him. She invokes the Goddess Hekate to curse him to everlasting torment. But unknown to Katie, the killer lied to her, and she has cursed not only the wrong man, but also herself as well.

[...] The suspense will keep you on the edge of your seat as Ben and Katie join forces and travel to Greece to rescue the true grail and keep it from the evil Comitatus members. Katie is hit with conflicts on all sides. She must deal with a Victor growing more menacing by the hour. She must outwit the Comitatus men who seek to destroy the grail. And she must search her soul to understand her growing romantic relationship with Ben. The book has a satisfying end, but includes a note of suspense that really makes it difficult for me to wait patiently for the next book from Vaughn.

5 out of 5 stars excellent Grail romantic fantasy.......2006-02-16

Katie Trillo comes home to the house she shares with her sister Diana the witch only to find her beloved sibling murdered. Se realizes the killer is about to hit her with a hammer, but she deflects the blow with her hand. She learns her assailant's name is Benny Fisher so she invokes Hecate and curses him before he flees.

The police arrest Benny, who has an alibi, but is still placed on a line-up with his twin brother Victor. Katie selects Victor whose fingerprints are all over her kitchen as her sister's killer. She realizes she cursed the wrong sibling. As Benny finds himself in several car accidents, Victor is freed as his lawyer makes Diana, Katie and Benny look like crackpots. Still she knows who murdered her sister and why, the Hecate Chalice. With Benny at her side, she travels to Greece where Victor has previously gone in his efforts to join the evil Comitatus secret society that searches for Goddess chalices ultimately looking for the Grail.

SOMETHING WICKED, the latest Grail romantic fantasy, is an enjoyable tale starring two likable protagonists falling in love with one feeling guilty for cursing the wrong man, her beloved instead of his sibling. The cast makes the tale as fans will take immense delight with the relationship between the lead couple and hiss at the diabolical Comitatus members who cleverly make Katie and Benny look like crackpots and give Victor an opportunity to join. Fans will appreciate the adventures of Katie and Benny as they do battle with his brother supported by wealth and influence.

5 out of 5 stars Evelyn Vaughn delivers another great book!.......2006-02-13

Evelyn Vaughn returns with her next installment of the intriguing Grail Keepers series. Kate Trillo has rebelled against her family's history of practicing witchcraft (the goddess worshipping type) ever since a near disastrous incident when she was a child. However, when she walks into the home she shares with her sister, Diana, to find Diana dead and the killer still there, Kate invokes the goddess Hekate to curse the killer to everlasting torment. Unfortunately, Kate curses Ben Fisher, the name given to her by the killer, when in fact the killer is Victor Fisher, Ben's twin brother. Victor and Ben's father was a member of Comitatus until he was murdered for trying to leave the organization. Victor wants to return to what he considers his rightful place within the organization and is thus searching for Hekate's Grail. Victor steals Diana's Grail, but it is not the Grail he needs. Kate doesn't want to find the Grail but reluctantly begins the search for it after Victor is released from the murder charges due to insufficient evidence. Kate's quest for the Grail as well as her soul searching kept me intrigued throughout the book. Although I was disappointed not to learn more about the Comitatus, I am still looking forward to reading the next book in the series.

5 out of 5 stars Has it all!!!.......2007-10-01

What a great read! I just happened across this book on someone's list and am so glad I did. It has it all...humor, action and hot romance. I will definitely purchase the next book in this series.

          2 out of 5 stars *A TEDIOUS READ*.......2006-08-06

This book had some humour, but for the most part I was bored. I did like the main female character but the men in her life were very frustrating. I really struggled to finish the story. For the "erotic" content; not enough and again boring. I did not find even the suspense part of the book capturing. I expected more of a mystery novel with some hot romance but I was left wanting and again struggling to complete the book. Hope this helps.

5 out of 5 stars Has It All.......2006-04-22

Ok, it's published by Ellora's Cave, so it's got erotic scenes galore. But what I *loved* about this book was the fact that it has an action-packed, paranormal plot and humor! I can't remember another story that managed to be as steamy, riveting and laugh-out-loud funny. In a small way it reminded me of MJ Davidson's early Undead books (before Betsy became unbearably ditzy, insensitive and kinda unlikeable). Desy and Armaund are a great pair: she's a skeptic and he's patient and sexy. Alpha without being a scary jerk. Good news, too, there's a sequel titled "Something Wanton," so you can follow the characters and watch their relationship develop just a little longer.

3 out of 5 stars A Read That Offers A Little Bit For Every Taste!.......2005-06-27

This is the first time I've ever read Ms. Meadows. Her story "Something Wicked" is a witty combination of chick-lit, paranormal, and erotica. As a result this read will stand out for many since these types of read are few and far between.
Desy is a P.I. who lives with her aunt in Michigan. She works and is partners (working relationship only) with her best friend Nick. Things are not always what they seem and well, sometimes they are exactly what they seem.

Desy thinks life is going to be as predictable as it can be until she comes home one night to a mysterious visitor that her aunt welcomes with open arms. Armand is tall, dark, sexy, and Parisian. Oh, and there is the small matter that he thinks that Desy is a witch as he is, and that she is going to help him since she belongs to him. Right...all the time. Now, nutty things are happening and the attraction between Desy and Armand can't be ignored. Will Desy accept that she is tied to Armand or will darker forces keep them apart?

This was a quirky read. This read was both entertaining and annoying. This is written in 1st person POV and if this is a format that doesn't appeal, keep that in mind. Otherwise Desy and Armand are rather entertaining characters that will entertain while the reader hold the book. This is a spicy read and there is really no closure at the end of the read. Will she stay or won't she kind of thing. This story does continue into the next title "Something Wanton."

5 out of 5 stars HOT, HOT, HOT!!!!!.......2005-06-01

This book was steaming from the beginning to the end. Des is a very strong female character. She is surrounded by exciting and SEXY men. Her job is never boring and oh yeah, she's a witch, a High Priestess. She finds this juicy tidbit out from Armand, the High Priest and man of her dreams, literally. I usually won't read a book about witches, but I couldn't put this one down. I have already ordered the sequel.

Falling passionately in love with a mysterious, sinfully sexy man can lead to

          Something Wicked

Investigative reporter Regan Cluny is in hot pursuit of a reclusive

philanthropist who is financing a mysterious archaeological dig in the

California desert. Attempting to convince Charles Cunningham Nash to grant her

an interview has proven impossible long distance, so Regan sets off uninvited

for his dig to woo him in person. Instead, she meets with deadly trouble; a

biker gang corners her at a remote rest stop, sabotages her car, and leaves her

for dead on a country road. Miraculously, Regan survives with only one strange

memory of her attack...and the man who comes to her aid is Nash himself.

Strongly attracted to her handsome protector, Regan can't know that Nash is a

vampire tied to her attackers by a vicious blood feud that dates back to the

Civil War - or that he has hungered for the life and soul of a mortal for nearly

two centuries. With the local sheriff determined to nail Nash for the violence

perpetrated by his dire enemy, Regan must decide whether the dark secrets of a

lover she can't live without are something wonderful...or something wicked.

          1 out of 5 stars sucked bad!!!.......2007-09-21

I wish I'd never wasted my time on this one, never mind money! I decided to buy it because the plot sounded interesting. The only thing good I can say about it is the mechanics of the writing weren't bad.
The male main character is supposed to be a vampire, but don't think powerful and magnetic. Think wimpy and ineffectual. For one thing in this permutation of vampire reality, vampires have no real powers and aren't much different from normal humans, unless, of course, nice guys turn ineffectual. Even though the evil bad guy has been crueliy killing off the good guy's family and friends since the Civil War, the good guy hasn't ever made a real effort to fight back. He just played the victim for fifty years or so and then ran for the hills (the Carpathian hills).
Another thing that I didn't like about this book is that there was just something grating about how the characters were portrayed. To me the there was no wittiness just stupidness.
I didn't like how much violence was in this book. It overwhelmed any possible romance. Also, when the heroine was cruelly tortured and nearly killed, it was as if nothing much had happened. I would have expected
more reaction from her and from the supposed hero, even if he hadn't gotten to know her yet. The emotion wasn't there for a romantic story or even for a realistic kind of story.

          3 out of 5 stars Just OK..........2007-09-18

This book was just ok. No great hero, no interesting leading lady, no fascinating bad guy, no hot love scenes...just kinda so so on all counts. The idea had merit, the book has a wonderful cover (that's what caught my eye), and a good beginning, but it was not executed as well as most. What should have been a riveting tale of love and adventure (vampire ala Indiana Jones) fell flat with no adventure, and love that you couldn't help but question. I found myself thinking "Oh Please!" more than once while reading this book.
I won't purchase another from this author; although I think she deserves a pat on the back for trying. I would recommend going to the library for this one.

          3 out of 5 stars just so-so.......2007-09-10

This book started out really promising with Regan's attack and the story being told out in the middle of nowhere on a Indiana Jones type dig site. After the first part though, it became kind of boring and I didn't get into the characters. There wasn't much conflict between the hero and heroine even though he's a vampire. The love scenes were rushed and kind of blah. Good concept, just not executed as well as it could have been.

          3 out of 5 stars Lacking Pizzaz!.......2007-09-10

While this book was readable and had a fairly good story, there was something lacking in this story. Regan Cluny is a reporter after a story at an archeological dig where vampire Nash is seeking a spring that will cure him of his vampirism. The book had a good beginning with Regan being attacked by a motorcylce gang of vampires, who assault her and leave her for dead. I think my problem with it was that after the initial interesting beginning there was a slide into mediocre. I didn't really buy the love story and the evil vampire, Harper, who is out to destroy all that Nash loves left me with a blah feeling. This book was OK but it didn't really grip me by the throat and hang on.

          4 out of 5 stars Wonderfully Wicked.......2007-09-05

A new take on the vampire legend, well written & witty. One of the few non-historical romances that I have really been sucked (no pun intended) into.
