The Definative Source on Regional Anesthesia.......2007-02-10
After patiently waiting for it's release I was thrilled to get my copy of "Regional Anesthesia and Acute Pain Management" edited by Admir Hadzic. Finally there is a true textbook of regional anesthesia not simply a step-by-step instruction manuel for performing a block. That information is of course included (in the terrific fashion we have come to expect from NYSORA) but it is completmented by the relevent pharmacology, physiology and functional anatomy that will help you become a successful practitioner of regional anesthesia.
Book Description
Ten years after his death, Edwin Friedman's insights into leadership are more urgently needed than ever. He was the first to tell us that all organizations have personalities, like families, and to apply the insights of family therapy to churches and synagogues, rectors and rabbis, politicians and teachers.
Failure of Nerve is essential reading for all leaders, be they parents or presidents, corporate executives or educators, religious superiors or coaches, healers or generals, managers or clergy.
Friedman's insights about our regressed, "seatbelt society," oriented toward safety rather than adventure, help explain the sabotage that leaders constantly face today. Suspicious of the "quick fixes" and instant solutions that sweep through our culture only to give way to the next fad, he argues for strength and self-differentiation as the marks of true leadership. His formula for success is more maturity, not more data; stamina, not technique; and personal responsibility, not empathy.
This book was unfinished at the time of Friedman's death, and originally published in a limited edition. This new edition makes his life-changing insights and challenges to a new generation of readers.

News we need to hear.......2007-09-19
Edwin Friedman has given us a model of human leadership that combines the insight of the natural sciences with the wisdom of spirituality. If you think that the conformity of the consumer culture is bad for your health, you are right. If you have been wondering why our great democracy has produced such seemingly spineless leadership, this book will aid your understanding. As a reader who is also a leader, I was relieved to read that my problems were not pathological but only to be expected. This is good, validating stuff.
A seminal contribution to cognitive philosophy and leadership studies shelves........2007-07-09
A Failure of Nerve: Leadership in the Age of the Quick Fix is a new edition of the Rabbi Edwin H. Friedman's seminal treatise, as relevant today as when it was first published posthumously in 1999. A Failure of Nerve examines fallacies of emotional and intellectual thinking that can bedevil leaders of individual, group, and national efforts, including the fallacy of paying too much attention to raw accumulated data; the fallacy of allowing empathy for others' feelings (normally a positive quality) to corrupt logical reasoning or blind one's measured consideration of new ideas; and the importance of the expression of the self in a leader. A highly scholarly and academic perspective on common misperceptions and roadblocks to confronting difficult problems. "As with the treadmill effect, the concern with finding the right answer is both contributory to a fixed orientation and symptomatic of it. And yet the problem is emotional, not cerebral. Perpetually seeking new answers to established questions rather than reframing the basic question itself not only betrays lack of distance on the part of the searcher; it also prevents obtaining the distance necessary for being able to think, much less go, in new directions. Seeking answers can be its own treadmill. Changing the question enables one to step off." A seminal contribution to cognitive philosophy and leadership studies shelves.
Best Book on Leadership Yet.......2007-07-03
I started out wondering if this book would be too technical, but the way it was edited and structured, it soon became the best book on leadership I have ever read. It came at the subject from a totally fresh and new perspective- one that I had not thought of. When I finished it I thought, "This is so simple- why has everyone missed this view of leadership?"
Great book. How do we get it into the government's hands? They need it badly.
Great Application of Family Systems Theory on a Macro Level.......2007-06-11
This book provides a great application of Bowen family systems theory on a macro level. Having some basic understanding of family systems theory is helpful, but not absolutely necessary, in understanding the concepts of this book. Friedman applies family systems ideas to leadership in ways that will make you think differently about what makes an effective leader (whether it be a President or a parent or any leader in between). For those, like me, who use family systems on a micro level in psychotherapy to help individuals and families function better, seeing how these same family system ideas can also be applied to the "big picture" is eye opening. Friedman's writing style is clear and enjoyable. As a framework to explain his theories on leadership, Friedman uses the cultural mindset that existed in Europe at the time explorers were proposing to set out across the Atlantic to seek new trade routes to Asia. This framework may seem odd and out of place, but is in fact a clever and captivating means for Friedman to explain his theories effectively. The editors of this book also deserve praise in how they astutely updated and stayed true to this unfinished work by Friedman. Whether you are a leader looking for new ideas to become more effective in what you do or simply a person who is just interested in leadership as a cultural concept, this book will inspire you to think differently and question conventional wisdom.
Courage in Leadership.......2007-06-04
Note: This review originally appeared as a "You Be the Critic" column in the Rochester NY Democrat & Chronicle, 5/8/07:
In 20 years of coaching executives, I've read scores of books on leadership. I continue to return to Edwin Friedman as the most insightful, realistic analyst of the dynamics that occur in the emotional soup we call the workplace.
This book is not for the faint of heart. As the title implies, the antidote to a failure of nerve is courage. Courage becomes necessary once a leader begins to shift his/her own participation in the brokenness of the organization - e.g., to finally address a performance issue with a key employee. With this commitment to decisive, mature action, reactions are inevitable. Thus the need for courage: to persist in the face of those reactions.
Leaders will discover keys to recognize the emotionality that contaminates all decision-making processes, and what is required to provide clear, decisive, well-defined action. Friedman offers a treasure trove of tools, concepts and principles (e.g., five characteristics of a highly anxious system) to help leaders diagnose complex situations and to determine what is helpful and what is harmful.
Perhaps his most crucial contribution is the insistence that the leader focus on self: that is, in order to create transformation in a system, the leader needs to identify his/her participation in the present dynamic, and focus on altering his/her own role. Again, courage is a requirement here, but thankfully, focus on self diminishes the stress inherent in attempting to change others.
While the later chapters are sketchy (Friedman died before completing the text), they hold intriguing snippets - insights into the workings of our organizations and the challenges of leadership.
As with his other writings (e.g., "Friedman's Fables"), his insights are universal, and leaders will find application as much to their personal/family systems as to their work. His witty style punctuates "heavy" insight with a human and humorous twist that gives the challenges a pleasing flavor.

Book Description
The extraordinary saga of Mother Angelica, founder of the multimillion-dollar Eternal Word Television Network and “the most influential Catholic woman in America” according to Time magazine
In 1981, the year after Ted Turner founded CNN, a simple nun, using merely her entrepreneurial instincts and $200, launched what would become the world’s largest religious media empire in the garage of a Birmingham, Alabama, monastery. Under her guidance, the Eternal Word Television Network grew at a staggering pace, both in viewership and in influence, to where it now reaches over a hundred million viewers in hundreds of countries around the globe.
Born Rita Rizzo in Canton, Ohio, in 1923, Mother Angelica was abandoned by her father and raised in poverty by a mother who suffered from suicidal depressions. As a young woman, Rita developed severe abdominal pain that doctors dismissed as a “nervous condition,” but when she sought the prayers of a local mystic, her symptoms disappeared. Awakened to the power of prayer, she vowed to dedicate her life to God and became a cloistered nun, expecting to spend her life hidden from the world. But Rita’s faith soon compelled her to unlikely endeavors, from establishing a monastery in Alabama to starting the world’s first Catholic cable network. Relying solely on “God’s providence,” Mother Angelica built an empire without concern for budgets or fund-raising campaigns, achieving what even the highest levels of the Catholic Church had been unable to do.
Raymond Arroyo combines his journalist’s objectivity and eye for detail with more than five years of exclusive interviews with Mother Angelica. He traces Mother Angelica’s tortured rise to success and exposes for the first time the fierce opposition she faced, both inside and outside of her church. It is an inspiring story of survival and proof that one woman’s faith can move more than mountains.

A living saint!.......2007-10-09
Thanks to a friend, who prompted me more than once to read it, I finished reading this story of a living saint. Did I say a living saint? I certainly did. The book made a deep impression on me.
More than anything else, this book reminds us of how real saints are. How perfectly human. And this realization is an incredible call for us to get back on track on our own and real path to sainthood!
Before reading it, I felt I knew a lot about Mother Angelica. We had EWTN whenever we have had satellite TV--which I admit it hasn't been many times or for very long. I liked her and admired her, and had loosely followed some of her life highlights, such as her miraculous walk on TV and her issues with cardinal Mahoney's pastoral letter.
And yet I closed the book feeling that I had met a wonderful friend, and that there is hope for me, and for anyone willing to attempt living a life of faith. It is this personal, the reading of this book. Or it can be anyway.
I want to read it again-- and this time I think I will grab it on audio, read by the author.
Mother Angelica saved me from the depths........2007-09-07
Seven years ago a very rare disease put me in bed for 6 months. I could not stand up on my own. I could walk with a cane once I got up on my feet. Mother Angelica via EWTN saved me from the depths of depression and helped me with my anger about being ill. This book tells her story about how she faced and overcame many illnesses and hardships. Yet, Mother Angelica always loves the people around her. Well written and an excellent read.
See what Trust in God can do in just one life..........2007-07-12
If you want to see what radical love of God can do in a life - this is the book to read. It does not matter if you are Catholic, Orthodox, or of any Christian denomination - this book is a road map of how to "work for God."
The book is written by someone who not only loves her, but acknowledges her faults - and just like all of us, she has many. This is a REAL living breathing human being who encounters the same difficulties we all face. The same emotions, hurts, fears, ailments. And yet, maybe it is because of all this that she could talk to anyone (rich man, poor man, beggar, thief) and help them to see that life is never hopeless.
You'll need to be careful though, one reading of this book will have you pondering a big question -- "Do I really trust God enough to find out his will, and do it?"
I highly, highly recommend this book.
Once you start you won't be able to stop!.......2007-07-04
I meant to listen to the audio CDs over weeks in my car during my commute. Over the first weekend I took all the CDs back into my home and listened to the rest of the book while painting a room. The wonderful thing about the audio is Raymond Arroyo's PERFECT imitation of Mother.
The book is so hopeful - even among the many physical and spiritual trials. Her faithfulness is stunning; it calls all of us to the same faithfulness.
Thank-you Mother.......2007-06-07
I really enjoyed this book and found Mother Angelica to be quite a complex and interesting person. I think Raymond Arroyo did a remarkable job in telling her story without getting in the way. Thank-you Mother Angelica for your passion and the fruits prove your source.. and Thank-you Raymond for a job well done!
Book Description
Sometimes the dead live on in your dreams . . . at least that's true for Roy Valois. His wife, Delia, died fifteen years earlier while working for a private think tank and he has never forgotten her. Roy is a well-known sculptor in the art world. His newest piece, a magnificent creation he calls Delia, has just been finished, a sign that he's found a little closure at last.
Then Roy gets some news of the grimmest kind. It's the kind of news that forces thoughts in unexpected directions, such as the contents of one's obituary. Roy and his lawyer, a close friend, find themselves wondering whether Roy's obituary will mention a big goal he scored in college hockey. Roy's friend suggests that they could probably find out. With some help, they hack into the morgue files of the New York Times. There's no mention of the goal, but something else about his obituary bothers Roy. According to the New York Times, his wife was working for the United Nations when she died—not the think tank.
At first, Roy thinks it's a simple mistake, but when a conversation with the writer of his obituary fails to clear things up, he suspects something more. The deeper he digs, the more confusing his wife's past becomes. Delia's former colleagues deny ever knowing her, the building that housed the think tank has supposedly served as the offices for another organization for decades, and Roy can't find any records of its existence. Who was Delia? Who did she work for? How did she really die? Did she really die? With time running out, a desperate Roy won't stop until he knows the truth about the woman he can't stop loving.
Customer Reviews:
Too convenient.......2007-08-27
I've never read Abrahams before, but I thought this novel was kind of lame. So many convenient plot twists that came along just as mechanisms to advance the story did not seem natural (think about Jerry calling Roy out of the blue to make sure that he has not given up the case. HUH?) and so much was useless to the plot and the ending at the farm ... pu-leaze.
I've heard good things about Abrahams, so maybe I would try another, but I thought this novel was a real waste of time
Abrahams, the Consummate Pro.......2007-06-21
In an interview, Peter Abrahams once said that his one main rule for writing is, "Do something original on every page." NERVE DAMAGE is another excellent illustration of this rule in practice. The story of an artist racing against terminal illness to discover the truth behind his wife's death, the novel is insanely smart and furiously compelling with dialogue that crackles like a sparkler; but as always the real treat is the writing. Never fancy, always cat-quick and often snort-your-soda funny, Abraham's prose moves like judo across the page, using the weight of the reader's interest to propel the tale forward without ever seeming to break a sweat. His protagonist's vision of the world, precisely observed and wholly unsentimental, rings fundamentally true, and Abrahams uses the least assuming details to enormously successful effect.
If NERVE DAMAGE is your first Abrahams book, I envy you -- it's like walking into a bar, sitting down and having the Beatles in their prime come up onstage for an unannounced set of their greatest songs, playing for two hours and packing up their kits. Abrahams is the consummate pro.
3.5 Stars - A race against time.......2007-06-12
First Sentence: Sometimes the dead live on in your dreams.
Metal sculptor Roy Valois has just finished a masterful piece of sculpture he names for his late wife, Delia and plays an exceptional game during his local hockey night. When talking with a friend and wondering whether his goal that night would someday be mentioned in his obituary, he solicits the help of a young geek to look it up. However, his surprise comes when he sees they've listed Delia's job as being with the UN and not with a private think tank. In trying to clear up this "mistake," the reporter is murdered and it soon become clear someone doesn't want Roy questioning the past.
Abrahams writes very good psychological/political suspense. In Roy, he has created a character for whom we quickly come to care. He is realistic both as an artist who sees the flaws in his work where others see the perfections, and as a man who still loves playing hockey, still grieves the loss of his wife and is thrown into desperation when he finds he has an incurable cancer. Abrahams has created an excellent race against time and conveys Roy's frustration beautifully. The plot, as the story progresses, does go over the top but it certainly didn't slow down my reading. If you're looking for an exciting one-sitting read or a great airplane book, this is it.
Intriguing Until -.......2007-06-06
I have never met a PA that I didn't like. In fact, he's one of my favorite authors.
This book did not disappoint- until the end. You'll race through the fast paced chapters and assimilate possible ending scenarios but unfortunately you'll most likely come up with a better ending than the author.
Thrilling.......2007-05-17
Simply put: a page turner. I couln't put the book down. The author is a genius of suspense... I felt like a fish trying to get a piece of bait.

I must read for panic suffers.......2007-06-16
Years ago I suffered from panic disorder. This book was recommended to me. I have since bought dozens of copies for friends and family that I think should learn how powerful the mind can be. Dr. Weekes is a genius at making you understand that the more you resist the more the symptoms persist. A nervous mind sees no end in the fear of another panic attack. The fear is what keeps it alive. Read the book if you've ever had a moment or feeling that you're not yourself. This book will change your life.
Great!!!!.......2007-05-18
It has really helped me out alot. Also it has given me some good advice.
Great for anyone suffering with anxiety.......2007-05-13
I bought this book after several months of suffering with severe anxiety and panic attacks. The book is written as if Dr Weekes was speaking directly to me. I highly recommend this book.
Good stuff.......2007-05-12
I am not one of those people who has read multiple self-help books, in fact-- I've read two, this one and Robin Sharma's The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari (which i highly RECOMMEND). I am 18 years old.
I began looking for a self help book after having a good 8 months with light to chronic insomnia. I've had difficulties with anxiety for the past 2 years, have had harsh panic attacks (and sometimes trips to clinics and the hospital), but it wasn't until I had began having trouble with sleep that I had sought help. This was the first "nervous illness" that I could not get a grip on on my own, and after reading reviews here and by various other people, I decided on this book.
I like: That it's not a high-tech vocabulary book. It's simple vocabulary, written carefully by a woman who understands what I was feeling. This is the first time I finally got perspective on what was happening with me, mentally. She deals with various issues, every fear, and describes them fairly accurately. What's best about this book, no doubt, is how it's written. I felt like I was having tea with the lady the whole time.
I didn't like: How it affected me in the beginning. It brought back really harsh and ruthless memories which made me pretty vulnerable. I suggest reading it with someone you trust, or maybe even just in their company, whatever might make you feel more comfortable. I'd also suggest to read it consecutively, maybe not all at once, but I wouldn't stop until you feel soothed and calmed. (because it did eventually calm me)
Her concept of "Floating", which I practice almost every time I'm panic-stricken, takes practice. I still don't have that down, but I feel it work the more I practice. I think "floating" could have been explained better, and elaborated on its definition because it took me a few reads to get even a glimpse on what she meant and what it meant to myself.
I do recommend this book, regardless of age, intelligence, and sex. Definitely worth giving a shot.
Book Description
Here is complete coverage of state-of-the-art surgical techniques for the spine and peripheral nerves. This atlas engages the full range of approaches -- anterior, antero-lateral, posterior, and postero-lateral -- for operations on peripheral nerves and in every area of the spine, from cephalad to caudad.
Each of the seven sections of the atlas opens with in-depth discussion of pathology, etiology and differential diagnosis conveying the underlying scientific principles of diseases and conditions of the spine and peripheral nerves. The authors then present technique-oriented chapters containing step-by-step descriptions of surgical procedures. These chapters delineate the goals, indications, contraindications, anesthesia considerations, positions, as well as the advantages and disadvantages of each technique in a concise manner, ideal for the busy practitioner seeking review. Lavishly illustrated with more than 1,200 images, including 811 beautiful full color drawings, this authoritative text covers all of the critical issues involved in surgeries for the spine and peripheral nerves. Here is an invaluable asset to neurosurgeons, orthopedic surgeons and residents seeking a carefully edited, didactic atlas.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent neurosurgical atlas.......2007-02-09
Much like it's brain counterpart, this is an excellent atlas. It is arranged logically and the pictures are excellent (and in color). It outdoes many other atlases in how up-to-date and expansive it is. The text is "to the point". I have found these books to be the best at preparing the night before a major case. All critical steps are reviewed and well-elucidated through illustration.

Customer Reviews:
This is THE book to get for nerve blocks........2007-05-26
I searched far and wide for the ideal regional book. I compared illustrations, methods, descriptions, price...everything. This exceeded my expectations. The book starts with a section entitled "training in PNB", which could be useful for an academic department trying to implement a structured regional anesthesia program or perhaps a private group looking to improve the group's delivery of regional anesthesia. Next is the excellent chapter on "essential regional anesthesia anatomy". Ch. 3 is a very practical guide as to what equipment the department will need (including needles, syringes, drugs, airway, etc). There are chapters on pharmacology, complications, and general tips for success. The meat of the book starts on p.90 (ch.8). This is where the book truly shines. Each chapter describes a block and follows the same format. It opens with "Block at a Glance", a short bulleted list that succinctly describes indications, landmarks, needle, amount of local and level of difficulty. Then it delves into the anatomy, distribution of the block, positioning, equipment, landmarks, and detailed step by step intstructions. There are numerous illustrations and glossy photos, countless practical tips on what to do if you fail to get twitches on the first pass, choice of local, everything. Keep in mind, this is not meant to be a comprehensive catalogue of every possible way to block so-and-so nerve. It is a pratical instruction manual meant to teach you a few of the most useful blocks. The techniques may not coincide with the way you were taught but these are the tried and true techniques as perfected by the docs at NYSORA. In summary, even if you haven't done a PNB since residency, this book will allow you to start performing them again with confidence. It's your one-stop source.
One of the best........2007-01-12
This is one of the best texts you will find regarding perpheral nerve blocks. The graphics are very good with actual pictures clearly showing relevant landmarks. The text also covers pharmacology, clinical pearls, how to avoid pitfalls as well as more detailed and specific information. Highly recommended.

Excellent boook.......2005-07-22
This text is based on the work put into the www.nysora.com website over the past several years.
The book covers a pretty wide collection of regional blocks, but omits dealing with spinals and epidurals.
Each block is explained covering the essential anatomy, surface anatomy, detailed technique and sevceral practical tips and hints for when things do not go quite according to plan.
I recommend the text very highly

After all these years of thinking 69 was our lucky number, the perpetrators of Nerve.com's wildly popular "Position of the Day" have hand-picked 366 of their very best erotic scenarios into one gloriously chunky, deeply inspiring, and hilarious compendium. Yes, that's 366 - one for each day of the year plus a little something special for leap year! Illustrated with anatomically correct drawn figures, the positions run the lusty gamut from plausible to creative to Honey, get my weight belt, this is going to require some heavy lifting! For beginners and the acrobatically challenged, there are accessible suggestions such as the Corporate Merger, the Wet Blanket, and the TV Dinner. Meanwhile, the adept and adventurous can try their hand at The Snow Blower, The Papoose, and the Quasimodo, which field-testing suggests is best attempted only after a vigorous round of stretching and a can of Red Bull. Position of the Day is about not becoming a creature of habit, because even the Excuse Me, Do I Know You? can get boring if that's the only position in your repertoire...

The book isn't what I expected ..........2007-09-20
Well, in general I was looking for useful tips, not positions that require me to be a female He-Man, holding myself up with one arm and what not ... Maybe they're great, but I'm scrawny and weak so I'll have to hit the gym to fully put this book to good use.
Lack of variety.......2007-05-13
I would not recommend this to anybody. About 30 percent of the postions are repeat at least once, there are some that are repeated three or four times, just under a different name. This book also doesn't have any information about the positions. I would recommend "Daily Sex: 365 Positions and Activities for a Year of Great Sex!" by Jane Seddon.
Missing the point.......2007-01-19
Those critical of this nifty little book are missing the point: it's super-fun. Fun positions. Fun names given to positions. Fun ideas that can be modified for your abilities and, ahem, preferences. It's handy size makes it easily concealable in the nightstand, and it's not too naughty to give as a gift. Enjoy!
Don't bother, unless you're in for a laugh........2006-07-10
No other reviews helped me with what I got when I bought this book. First off, unless your into guy on guy, woman on woman, or multiple partners, this book might have no interest to you. The positions in this book are redundant, and most of which everyone has tried. The harder ones require great flexibility, which can be fun but there's not enough of them. They have half the book as the above mentioned, guy on guy, girl on girl and more then two people. This is definately not for just couples. if you're a couple and looking for a book to get hints from, this is not the book. Also, if you don't have horizontal and veritical poles in your house, that takes away another quarter of the book. So basically you're only left with the same positions everyone has tried numorous times.
hilarious... and so fun to try.......2006-02-01
I purchased this book as a Christmas gift to my boyfriend, and it has made its way from his room to his college apartment's coffee table, where it gets tons of attention, laughs and instigates very interesting conversation. And I'm sure it has instigated its share of experimentation as well. The names of positions are unbelievably funny and the illustrations humorous as well. A great investment.

Neuropathy Understandable.......2007-08-24
Peripheral Neuropathy is a concise, inexpensive volume written in plain English. It will be useful to both neuropathy sufferers and their physicians alike.
Dr. Latov's expertise -- as a clinician, teacher, and a founder of The Neuropathy Association(www,neuropathy.org) -- is well-reflected in the text.
When both the doctor and the patient are able to discuss neuropathy knowledgeably as a result of reading this work, the disease will be better understood and managed
