Book Description
A pioneer in women's studies and long-term activist for women's issues, and a past president of the Organization of American Historians, Gerda Lerner is one of the founders and foremost scholars of Women's History. The Creation of Patriarchy, the first book in her two-volume magnum opus Women and History (1986) received wide review attention and much acclaim, winning the prestigious Joan Kelly Prize of the American Historical Association for the best work on Women's History that year. Ms hailed the book for providing "a grand historical framework that was impossible even to imagine before the enlightenment about women's place in the world provided by her earlier work and that of other feminist scholars." New Directions for Women said it "may well be the most important work in feminist theory to appear in our generation." Patriarchy traced the development of the ideas, symbols, and metaphors by which men institutionalized their domination of women. Now, in The Creation of Feminist Consciousness, the eagerly awaited concluding volume of Women and History, Lerner documents the twelve-hundred-year struggle of women to free their minds from patriarchal thought, to create Women's History, and to achieve a feminist consciousness. In a richly documented narrative filled with inspiring portraits of women, Lerner ranges from the Middle Ages to the late 19th century, tracing several important ways by which women strove for autonomy and equality. One of the most remarkable sections examines over twelve hundred years of feminist Bible criticism. Since objections to women's thinking, teaching, and speaking in public were based on biblical authority--most notably, passages from Genesis and the writings of St. Paul--women returned again and again to these texts, in an attempt to subvert patriarchal dominance and establish their equality with men. This survey of biblical criticism allows Lerner to illustrate her most important insight--the discontinuity of women's history. She describes how women's history was not passed on from generation to generation, forcing women in effect to reinvent the wheel over and over again. In a series of fascinating portraits of individual women who resisted patriarchal indoctrination, Lerner discusses women mystics such as Hildegard of Bingen, Julian of Norwich and later Protestant mystics, and brings to life the many women of great literary talent, from Christine de Pisan to Louise Labe to Emily Dickinson, who simply bypassed patriarchal thought and created alternate worlds for themselves. Documenting the 1,200 year struggle of women to free their minds from patriarchal thought, create a women's history, and achieve a feminist consciousness, this brilliant work charts new ground for feminist theory, the history of ideas, and the development of women's place in our intellectual tradition.

Book Description
Fin-de-siècle France was a period of unrest, with strikes, demonstrations, and anarchist terrorism reflecting deep social and political differences. Yet at the same time, this decade produced a vibrant visual culture—monumental sculpture, mural decoration, avant-garde painting, posters, illustrations, and photography—much of which was used to articulate France’s ideological arguments. This fascinating book shows how four key issues in social debate were treated by contemporary artists.
Richard Thomson begins by exploring disquieting attitudes toward the body and sexuality that resulted from France’s concerns about national decadence after its defeat in the Franco-Prussian War. He then considers how artists depicted crowds and represented public discomfort about mass unrest. Next he discusses religious imagery during a decade when the Catholic Church was attempting to come to terms with Republicanism. And finally he addresses the question of revenge against Germany for the annexation of Alsace-Lorraine, showing that it was kept alive in contemporary art.

Time to reflect.......2006-08-08
After my sixteen year old son's tragic death, a friend recommended Eighteen, No Time to Waste. Margaret Johnson wrote a remarkable account, not only of her daughter's brief presence in her life, but of God's eternal presence in all of our lives. She helped me realize early in my grieving that how we spend what time we have on earth is more important than merely how much time we have.
Every mother-daughter relationship isn't perfect........2005-10-03
A must-read for every mother with a teenage daughter. Margaret Johnson's description of Kathi's emerging independence and how it affected their relationship is honest. Kathi's boundless energy and determination, so cute in the little girl, was exhausting when the adolescent Kathi continually clashed with mom. Her choice of a best friend was a huge blow to her parents, especially her mom. It was more than the usual teenage "stuff"; there was a serious personality conflict between them. Before the book is over, Kathi has a life-changing experience that profoundly improves the relationship with her mother. Sadly, Kathi's life was cut short, leaving Margaret to sort things out. This great little book was the result. If she had lived, Margaret might never have shared Kathi's story.
When I read the book in the early 70s, it didn't occur to me that one day I would relate to so much of it. My tiny daughter and I had enjoyed a special relationship so I was unprepared for the clashes that surfaced during adolescence. Re-reading the book during that experience gave me encouragement to pray and keep being the mom. It helped! My daughter is now happily married to a mild-mannered guy who truly appreciates her strong opinions and independence.
I continue to recommend this book and recently purchased a newer printing from Amazon for myself. The last time I loaned my original copy, it didn't come back to me. It's a must for my library.
It's hard to put this book down.......2004-12-17
I first read the book about Kathi's life probably at least 20 years ago. It is a book that is hard to put down. I was so drawn to Margaret's story about her relationship with her daughter. It certainly created a new awareness of the brevity of life, and to seize every opportunity to serve the Lord, because tomorrow is not promised. I was very inspired by this story. Excellent reading!
This book gave me hope........2004-07-06
I read this book for the first time over 20 years ago. I was living in a very dark situation, and this book gave me hope that there really was a God who I could hold onto in all of life's difficulties. I read this book so many times as a teenager the pages fell out. I had to stick a rubber band around it to keep it together. Somehow, it got lost over the years so I was so excited to order it again all these years later. I read the whole thing the other day and find it still has a profound affect on me. It truly is an example of how God brings good things out of every hard thing and tragedy in our lives when we are His and called according to His purpose.

Jan Burke is a wonderful writer. Eighteen is a great collection of short stories.
Surprisingly great story-telling by Burke..........2004-08-05
This book was a great surprise to me. I picked it up thinking it was a mystery such as I've read by Burke before. I've enjoyed Burke's mysteries for years, but never thought of them as being great literature. They are just fun books to read. But this book thoroughly changed my mind about Burke's abilities.
First time I was in college, I majored in English Literature. I really enjoyed all of it including Chaucer, Shakespeare, Twain, Dickens, poetry by John Donne and Emily Dickinson...but I must have had a lousy teacher when it came to short stories. I hated the things. They were so often dark and I could not relate to the stories at all. I think there is one short story I still remember from that time about a boy on a rocking horse who couldn't stop rocking because as long as he did it his father/family won money. It was a really dark story...
I almost tossed this book aside when I realized it was a collection of short stories. I am glad that I didn't. I mowed through this book in two days straight and probably would have done it faster if I hadn't had other things to do. These stories are not all mysteries, and when they do involve mysteries, they are mysteries about what makes people tick. The last story was about a small boy whose abusive father dies. The local law enforcement wade through the evidence and a story is told in what is found about this boy and those people, such as his neighboring young teenager, who want to keep this boy safe.
All of these stories show great thought, and great effort, and great knowledge of humanity.
A really great addition to our American literature that will be missed by many unfortunately, the same way I almost missed it...

Great collection of stories by one of my favorite writers.......2004-03-15
I am a big fan of the Irene Kelly series and have always enjoyed reading the work of Jan Burke. She has a very special ability in getting the reader immersed in her stories, this being one of the reasons why she has won so many writing awards. In this collection of stories she displays her ability with confidence, taking the reader through a myriad of experiences.
I evaluated each story individually, and all of them received a rating between four and five stars, with the average being 4.5. Eight of the stories received five stars from me:
1) The Mouse: Looks at how things are for kids in school, how peer pressure may prevent someone from being proud of her actions, and how this changes in adulthood.
2) Revised Endings: Harriet feels miserable when she is assigned a new editor, who is obnoxious and demands changes in the ending of her latest novel.
3) Ghost of a Chance: A ghost visits a woman shortly after the death of her husband, who was murdered on a shooting by.
4) Unharmed: In this story, winner of the Readers Award from Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine and the Macavity Award, Alex recounts the death of a woman calibrating his involvement in it.
5) Mea Culpa: A boy tries to deal with the death of his father in a car accident and with a confession he listens his stepfather make acknowledging he wants to abandon the kid's mother.
6) An Unsuspected Condition of the Heart: Rossiter writes a letter in which he relates the vicissitudes he went through when he found Lord Dallingham on the road with his phaeton overturned.
7) The Abbey Ghost: In this Edgar Award Nominee story, Edward and Lucien scare their bad side of the family away using the legend of a ghost protecting a treasure in the abbey over which their castle was built. Years later when one of them dies, he becomes a "real ghost" in order to help the other one in dealing with a murderer.
8) Devotion: Frank Harriman, Irene Kelly's husband, along with some of the characters from "Bones" takes part in this story where a young boy goes missing after his father is murdered.
Besides the eight stories listed above, the collection includes the first Irene Kelly short story, "A fine set of teeth" and an Agatha Award nominee, "The man in the civil suit". Jan Burke displays an amazing variety in the stories, dealing with different time periods, types of characters, plots and viewpoints. This is a collection of stories you cannot miss! - 4.5 stars
Wonderful.......2004-02-11
I can't remember the last time I read an anthology of short stories -- probably in college -- and I doubt that any other author could have tempted me. I bought this book because the jacket promised there would be an Irene Kelly story, and I was in serious need of an "Irene Kelly fix"! These stories were wonderful and engrossing, which I guess shouldn't have been surprising. I've read all the Irene Kelly novels, and "Flight" and "Nine," and have never been disappointed. Thank you, Miss Burke, for your great work!
fascinating wide range of genres.......2003-12-31
Anyone who has not read a novel by the spectacular Jan Burke should try 18, an anthology of short stories that convey the wide range of her amazing talent. She writes contemporary, historical, and paranormal with the narrator being of either gender, and is comfortable in first or third person. The commonality is that each story is well written and fascinating.
Fans of Bones will want to read "Devotion" which showcases some of the same characters. After Detective Frank Harriman finds the murdered body of Victor Toller and learns his son is missing, he calls Ben Sheridan and asks him to do a search with his two SAR dogs Bingle and Bool.
The very popular Irene Kelly stars in "A Fine Set of Teeth". Irene and her husband Frank give musician Buzz Sullivan a lift to his music gig. They stay to hear the performance only to be awakened early the next morning to find out the lead singer has been killed.
In "MEA CULPA' a crippled young boy finds ways of protecting himself from his abusive step-father. However, when he discovers that the man is going to kill his mother, he must find a way to stop him. This intriguing story has a feel of Charles Dickens Victorian England even though it takes place in the United States.
Vampire lovers will want to read "The Haunting of Carrick Hollow", an atmospheric tale that is quite scary while ghost lovers will find "The Abbey Ghosts" actually enthralling.
The above is just a sample to whet the appetite. Readers will find themselves totally immersed in each and every story.

More detail than other accounts.......2006-01-28
This book would not be the first to read on the subject of the 1835-1836 independence movement. 'Texian Iliad' is a good introduction. 'Eighteen Minutes' contains more detail than some readers would want in the names of persons, army organization, and so forth. The details provide what is needed by those wanting to investigate further, but little help is provided those readers lacking a understanding of the conditions of the time and place.
Excellent job!.......2004-08-05
On a warm, partly cloudy afternoon on Thursday, April 21st in 1836 a smaller, poorly trained, ragtag army attacked a larger, better equipped force. In 18 minutes, a nation was born and over a million acres of land changed ownership. Ranked as one of the decisive battles of the western world, the author has done an excellent job tracing the history of the San Jacinto Campaign of the Texas Revolution. Using maps and first hand accounts (many of which have seldom seen the light of day) Stephen Moore tracks both the Texian and Mexican forces. Included are several useful muster rolls and lists show when and where the various volunteer units were formed. (The writer of this review had two ancestors at San Jacinto.) An added bonus are some outstanding paintings by Texas artist Charles Shaw.If you are studying the Texas Revolution in general or San Jacinto in particular, BUY THIS BOOK.
A superbly written military history.......2004-06-06
Written by a sixth generation Texan and a descendant of fighters who themselves battled for Texas independence, Eighteen Minutes: The Battle Of San Jacinto And The Texas Independence Campaign is an extensive retelling of the critical battle that established Texas as the Lone Star Republic, independent from Mexico. Drawing directly from and telling its story through the words of over 120 Texan and Mexican soldiers, Eighteen Minutes follows the actions of General Sam Houston and his Texas volunteers from one week after the fall of the Alamo to his victory at San Jacinto. Eighteen Minutes is an exhaustively researched, superbly written military history, laying out the brief yet utterly decisive battle in minute detail.
Takes a longer than Eighteen Minutes to read - Still great.......2004-01-09
The brave Texans who fought and died in the Battle of San Jacinto are only remembered in the footnotes of Modern U.S. History books and have never received credit for their magnanimous victory on the fields of San Jacinto. Rallying around the battle cry of the infamous phrases "Remember the Alamo" and "Remember Goliad," the Texan Army gained their independence by routing the Mexican Army of Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna Perez de Lebron (Otherwise known as Santa Anna to mortals). Stephen L. Moore's "Eighteen Minutes" uses the battle as a background to tell the story of the Texan Independence Campaign and the men who fought in it. In fact, Moore goes into too much detail by telling readers the names, ranks, and background of just about everyone who fought in the San Jacinto campaign, which is several thousand Texans and Mexicans combined. Exaggerations aside, "Eighteen Minutes" is a great book for those history buffs around the country, and I picked it up wanting to learn more about a war that is barely covered or remembered. I do not recommend it for anyone wanting a page-turner, but it is great history and a great history novel. Finally, the Texan freedom-fighters are given the credit they deserve. From one history buff to another, I applaud your effort Mr. Moore.

A second helping of blood and passion ...
Acclaimed dark fantasist Poppy Z. Brite's previous excursion into the nightmare realm of terrifying sensuality offered readers a sumptuous blood feast of unspeakable pleasures. Now she has done it again, serving up more provocative tales from some of the most inventive and accomplished writers in the field -- an unabashed exploration of shadow places and terrible hungers that's more dangerously seductive, more boldly erotic than the first.
If you found
Love in Vein disturbingly dark, unsettlingly seductive, and deliciously carnal -- you're going to adore
Twice Bitten: Love in Vein II. But be warned. It may be more than you can handle. It may open doors into the darkest corners of your unspoken fears. And it may be exactly what you've been secretly lusting for.
Customer Reviews:
Twice the fool..........2005-08-03
Once a fool, shame on you. Twice a fool, shame on me. Twice Bitten, like the first part of Love in Vein, is a major disappointment with a collection of insipid, uninteresting stories. The stories weren't dark, sensual, erotic, thought-provoking in the slightest -- well, not all of them. There are some good stories here that have the aforementioned ingredients that critics made such a big hype about. The ones I liked were "Dusting the Flowers," by David J. Schow; "Ceilings and Sky," by Lucy Taylor; and "When Memory Falls," by Roberta Lannes. I gave Twice Bitten a try because almost everyone told me that this one's so much better than the first Love in Vein offering. Nope. The subtitle "Tales of Vampiric Erotica" is a complete misnomer. Yes, there are vampires in the stories, but the erotica aspect of this book is debatable. I don't need in-your-face sex scenes to make a story erotic. I like subtle, sensual erotica, or sublime stories with erotic undertones, but said aspects in this story are few and far in between. The only thing I did like about this collection is that the stories are definitely creepy and scary. Other than that, this collection series is completely forgettable.
Ok, but could have been much better........2005-07-06
"S. Fackler 'littlebootz'" could not have said it better. The only reason why I feel I need to add my bit is to reiterate the misnomer of "Vampire" Erotica. There are only three stories or so that I felt could qualify. So if you're looking for the stereotype stuff, look elsewhere. Try "Time of The Vampires" by P.N. Elrod. You can read my review there. Brite's book is interesting and strange, so for that matter it is a decent read. I'd have to agree once again with S. Fackler regarding the stories I liked and disliked. Read this one with an open mind.
Eh........2005-03-01
To being with, it's very important that we pay attention to the exact subtitle of this book-this is "vampiric" erotica, not "vampire" erotica. While all of the stories revolve in some way around parasitic characters, only a few of them are the classic warm-thick-blood-sex vampire erotica. Most of the stories are at least creepy, and a few are quite scary.
As wth any collection of short stories, not every story will be to every person's taste, as you can see from the reviews here. In particular, the story "The Dripping of Sundered Wineskins" seems to elicit a love-it-or-hate-it opinion. Personally I loved it. I enjoyed all of the straight vampire tales, especially, of course, Neil Gaiman's excellent opening tale, "Snow, Glass, Apples". Other notable vampire stories were "Ceilings and Sky", Whispers in Walled Tombs", "First Date", and "Bloodlight."
Unfortunately, though, there are several stories I hated, too. "Armies of the Heart" was one, and I really, really hated "When Memory Fails" and "The Fly Room." Eyeball-sucking? Little mouths hanging around where they shouldn't be? Yeuch, no thank you! And "Bela's Plot" I unfortunately just did not understand. Were there actual vampires, or just sadists?
All in all, the book is worth it if you like spooky stories, and many of them are written in a slow-moving and descriptive style that gives them an erotic feel, but if you're looking for Vampire Erotica, you won't find much of it here.
Stronger collection than the first Love in Vein anthology.......2004-04-18
After reading Love in Vein, I approached Love in Vein II with trepidation. I was pleased to find that this was a collection of strong, imaginative stories. A few of the stories weren't really my taste, but they were all well written.
I do have to say that while the stories were almost always about sex in one way or another, I only found a couple slightly erotic. In fact several of the stories are not suited for the squemish -- or the less open-minded.
Ignoring the lack of erotica, the collection was quite strong. The opening story, in particular, was brilliant. I won't give the plot away, but it was a clever re-telling of a classic story.
If you like vampire stories and you are willing to stretch your definition of 'vampire' you'll probably enjoy these short stories, but don't expect a 'can't put it down' read.
An okay vampire anthology.......2003-12-09
Firstly, the book wasn't bad, but it wasn't exceptional either. Its claim of being "erotic" are a little premature. Sure, some of the stories are sexy, but not too many are erotic, and some are just borderline crude (as in bad sex crude, not stimulating crude). I even had to skip over one story (but I came back to it eventually) because it was just that bad.
There are some exceptional stories in the book such as Gaiman's short story and Brian Hodge's novella The Dripping of Sundered Wineskin, but most of the stories are only mediocre, and while they're not completely horrible, they're nothing to call home about. If you collect vampire stories as I do, then this isn't a bad addition to the collection, but if you're looking for good vampire erotica, I suggest looking elsewhere.

This is a very helpful book about encouraging girls........1998-10-13
Nicky Marone has been writing about parenting girls for more than a decade, and she really knows what she's doing. Her adivice is very practical and thoughtful, and she's a good story-teller, too. I learned a lot about myself and my daughter from this book!
Book Description
There is much to be learned philosophically from this volume, but philosophical instruction was not Kierkegaard's aim here, except in the broad sense of self-knowledge and deepened awareness. Indicating the intention of the discourses, the titles include "The Expectancy of Faith," "Love Will Hide a Multitude of Sins," "Strengthening in the Inner Being," "To Gain One's Soul in Patience," "Patience in Expectancy," and "Against Cowardliness." In tone and substance these works are in accord with the concluding words of encouragement in Either/Or, which was paired with the first volume of discourses: "Ask yourself and keep on asking until you find the answer, for one may have known something many times, acknowledged it; one may have willed something many times, attempted it--and yet, only the deep inner motion, only the heart's indescribable emotion, only that will convince you that what you have acknowledged belongs to you, that no power can take it from you--for only the truth that builds up is truth for you."

Rig Warrior 18 wheel advenger.......2000-11-16
This book was as well done as the other two in the series , I read it when it came out in 1988 and as usual the first book in any series is the best this one is also good . The Dog is back as mean as needed and fighting for just causes everywhere . I wish Mr Johnstone would do some more books on this series and the Shapeshifter series.
The Dog is back!!.......2000-09-23
The last installment of the "Rig Warrior" series does not disappoint. You start the book finding out that Barry the Dog is very bored (the one thing in the book I doubted), after I read that line I knew this was going to be a very fast and explosive story and boy was I right. I hate to tell too much about a story, I do not want to ruin it for those who choose to read this book. What I will tell you is this book deals with terrorism and how it is here. Although this is one man's thoughts on how terriorism in our country is ignored and actually encouraged it brings forth alot of questions of how can these people be here. Barry is back and he has bone to pick with everyone who doesn't see things his way!! Read and throughly enjoy this last installment, you won't be disappointed.
