This activity book is filled with review questions, map activities, coloring pages, and hands-on activities that kids from kindergarten through upper elementary school would enjoy. Some of the activity ideas are the messy or physical type that kids love, and some are cleaner and calmer. My homeschooled kids look forward to history, because the text and activity books draw them into the action.

We homeschool our 5 and 6 year old children. We haven't had a real history book yet, but I wanted to try sparking interest in history for them early. When I read Susan Wise Bauer's "The Well-Trained Mind" a guide for classical education at home, she suggested this book so I checked the reviews.
I just bought the first volume, but will be buying the rest of them as we go forward. I think the activity book is an absolute MUST HAVE to accompany the book. My kids have been interested in the way she writes, they remember the stories well, and I especially appreciate the pronounciation guide she gives in the back of the book. I couldn't begin to pronounce some of these names or places-thank goodness for the extra "help".
I look ahead to the next chapter and reserve the books at our library that she recommends to supplement that lesson. That way, there are other resources to amplify their learning. I love the review questions, maps, and coloring pages. It gets my 5 year old involved too.
All of Susan Wise Bauer's books are wonderful. I just keep adding to my collection. Most of all, the kids are loving their education at home-with me!
Great Time Saver.......2007-06-29
I guess we could all put together enough coloring and activities to go along with Story of the World Vol. 1, but some of us have other things to do. My kids enjoyed the activities. We certainly didn't do all of them and we tended to go with the more hands on. The Nile Delta was a big hit as was the pyramid. The instructions were simple enough to be adapted if we needed to do that... I see that as a plus. My kids are not into coloring, but there were plenty of other ideas to choose from. I am sure that your kids might get bored if you had them do EVERY SINGLE THING, but as a former classroom teacher, I recognize a resource that is well thought out and designed to appeal to a variety of learning styles.
I Wish I'd Bought This Sooner!.......2007-06-21
We bought "The Story of the World" book one last year, but didn't buy the activity book until this year. Big mistake! Although our girls were enjoying listening as we read aloud from the book, adding the activities has made it so much better. There are coloring pages about each chapter for them to work on while we read and then fun activities and games when they are done. We've made simple costumes in under 10 minutes, paper dolls, photo copied and played the board games, and read through the review questions. The review questions really help us to know how much they understood from the chapter. Our whole family is learning so much about history!
An excellent resource.......2007-05-17
I bought the workbook for my 9-year-old daughter, to go alone with the "textbook" and it's been an informative and interesting addition to our homeschooling library. I've even used some of the worksheets (the maps in particular) with my older son. Bauer included a lot of helpful information on ways to integrate the lessons into larger activities. It is well-organized and very useful.

this is a great book, for people that are fans of the show while josh bernstein was the host. to me the show is nothing without him! he is not only very informative, but you also get a sense of who he is, and all the stuff he went through to film such a great show! i would love to read more by him!
Digging for Something Other Than the Author's Ego.......2007-09-24
Maybe I was looking for information about archaeology, but what I received was a non-stop self-aggrandizement of the author. To be honest, I have not been able to get through the whole thing yet, but it's only because I was so disappointed in the part I have read.

Behind the scenes of a good tv show........2007-09-12
I really enjoyed this as a TV show when it was on the history channel and was pleased to see a 'behind the scenes' book. For those not familiar with the show, it is different from the usual talking heads feed you facts cable show, because the host really seems to get out and enjoy the work. Scrambling through ruins and up mountains to try and bring the viewer to the site really ads to the Indianna Jones sense of adventure brought by the cowboy hat, don't call it a fedora, wearing host.
This book ads to the serries by looking behind the scenes. Explaining the discomfort of lugging gear litterally over a glacer or dealing with grumpy officials in order to bring the show to the screen. If you've ever done filming or outdoor work, you know how this can go and Bernstien confirms with an almost gleeful sense of fun, that there were almost as many adventures behind the camera as were depicted on film.
If there's a down side to this book it is the nagging feeling that Bernstein isn't being entirely honest with us. Not about the big things but the small ones in his own life. He says he comes from the middle class of New York, but if you know the area and realize he is talking about family homes in the Hamptons and Bedford Hills, Westchester, vacation camps in Aruba and years of study in Israel, you realize he comes from money and either doesn't want to admit that or doesn't realize it. By the time the book has him worrying about ice storms in the alps while the producer is trying to get 'the shot' and everyone else is trying to survive, you're captivated by his style but that early misstep is an ugly distraction early on that stop this from being a 5 star for me. I kept reading and asking myself "Doesn't he know how lucky he is? does he take this for granted?" Anthony Bourdaine in his autobiography admitted early he came from money, got it out of the way and you never gave it another look. Bernstien will hopefully learn from the older tv presenter/turned writers for his next book. There will be another one, right?
Digging for the Truth.......2007-05-18
The book is an interesting and fun look at the series and some of the behind the scenes adventure and tedium that go into making the show. It's a pleasure to read. Josh Bernstein is an explorer and adventurer combining the scientific expeditions of the great age of exploration with the showmanship of Hollywood. This book is great by itslef and an excellent compliment to the TV series.

Sophocles' lexicon itself is mediocre, yet useful enough for anyone working with Greek literature from the late ancient or medieval period; I use it daily. This edition, though, is execrable. The print quality is so poor that at points the text is virtually unreadable. Page 1187 appears where page 1087 belongs; page 1086 doesn't appear anywhere, it seems. Watch out for missing text at the bottom of pages, as well. A reviewer of another edition of this work states, "It has a fairly complete 'Authors Referred To...' section in the introduction which identifies all of the in-text references." If a section entitled "Authors Referred To . . ." is to be found anywhere in Kessinger's shoddily produced two-volume set of Sophocles' lexicon, it is very well hidden; I haven't come across it in months of regular use. If you know how I can find out what cryptic citations like "Lyd. 127" mean, please let me know.
I recommend that potential buyers spend a bit more money and acquire a serviceable--and complete--edition of Sophocles' lexicon.

This is it!.......2006-04-28
I discovered this material in the early '80s about the time it was released. I was blown away then and still am. I'll never forget the feeling - something similar to having uncovered a profound and precious secret. I remain convinced that other than ACIM, this may be the ONLY channeled material out there that is what it purports to be. Much more recently, I've begun kinesiologically calibrating books, people, spiritual teachers, institutions with the method taught by Dr. David Hawkins. The Law of One books collectively calibrate (or they did with my calibration) at over 800, in fact somewhere in the neighborhood of 850 if I remember correctly. Astounding, considering that Hawkins states that less than 5% of channeled material calibrates over 455.That's about all I can say. Uh...Adonai.

There is a lot of channeled material out there, some good and some not so good. I think it is important to use discernment when reading channeled material, just as it is important to use discernment when reading anything, or when listening to a preacher talk.
Ultimately, the truth is inside of us, but we don't know it. So it helps to have it confirmed by `outside' sources. Sometimes we come across something that has that ring of truth in it, and we know it is appropriate for us in this point of time in out lives. Not necessarily appropriate for everyone at all times, or even for ourselves at all times, but appropriate in the now, for where we are at right now.
Thus, I have encountered many books and other sources of info that have all had varying degrees of what I consider `truth', but no one of them being THE TRUTH. (I have long ago dismissed the bible as THE truth, but consider it to have SOME truth in it, while most of it has been distorted.)
The Law of One books are the closest I have found to being THE truth. Many of the channeled works out there are cheesy, or they come across too `authoritative' ie `...in such-and-such year this WILL happen...', `...that IS the way it IS...', etc.
Ra, on the other hand, does not claim to be an authority. Rather, this entity repeatedly tells us to please use discernment and accept only that which resonates as truth within ourselves. Then proceeds to give info that totally rocks your socks off!
This stuff is deep, very deep. I have never read anything else, channeled or not, that even comes close to such high caliber! It is just completely obvious to me that the info really is coming from a higher being, cuz no way anyone could have made all this up!
OK, maybe someone could have. But this info came thru a woman in a trance, and she did not even know what she was saying until she woke up. Even very specific details are consistent throughout the text, over the course of several years of channeling.
But, my purpose is NOT to try to convince you. B4 the skeptics start, let me say that I am NOT trying to prove that this channeled work is authentic - if you are searching for absolute proof, then clearly this book (or any channeled work) is not for you. Better to stay in an organized religion and do as they tell you.
However, if you are a serious seeker who is not afraid to think for yourself, then I highly recommend you give these books a try. Prepare to have your mind opened!
If you're still with me, then maybe you'd like to know what the books are about. OK, for starters: the nature of life, the universe, how the pyramids were built, who the aliens are, the chakras, other dimensions, the important elements of a spiritual path, the nature of sexuality, etc. and lots of other interesting topics. But that is not what makes these books stand out - other books have tried to address these topics as well.
What makes the Law of One stand out is the explanation of `Good' vs `Evil'.
If you find the idea of a `good God' being in a constant war with the `evil Satan' oversimplistic, or if you believe that God is all-powerful and beyond good and evil, or if you have a hard time believing that God will `lose' most of the world's population to the `devil', and you are searching for a more intelligent explanation of why there is evil in the world, then these books might be for you.
Or, if you are tired of all the `doom and gloom' prophecies and would like to rekindle hope, then these books might be for you.
Be forewarned: these books are NOT light and fluffy. And whatever you believe, they will challenge you. But they will also inspire you, and give comfort.
This book changes your beliefs..........2004-08-22
This book contains very interesting information inside which I'm not sure if they are true or false.. But, it is so detailed and realistic that I want to believe it and after I read the book, I realized that it may be like the book says.. Ra Materials answer all the unknown about cosmology, from where men came, what will happen etc... Even if the book is full of false information, it is worth reading because of it's interesting theme..

The Ra material is the transcription of the taped communications between researcher Don and the entity RA, a being that is talking through Carla, often referred to as the "instrument" throughout the book (s), in a state of deep trance. The transcriptions are carried out by Jim and the three are always present during all sessions, creating a triangulation of light that allows for RA, a sixth dimensional being, that calles itself a "socialmemory complex", to come through and speak.
RA has choosen this group because of the purity of their intent and makes himself available to them for questions about the Universe, the Creator, the dimensions, Karma, the law of One and any other material that might aid people in understanding universal truths that might be helpful for mankinds evolution.
The materail is very esoteric and requires some concentration. However, it is well worth the effort, as it is enlightening, very precise, accurate and informative. The explanations around the shift in dimensions we are about to undergo on the planet, that Ra defines as the harvest, are devoid of hype and sensation. Harvest is a process that all beings and planetary bodies eventually encur, following physical/spiritual law just as eclipses do or the seasons.The science of the harvest ( ascension) is explained in depth here as is the chakra system and it's role in Soul evolution.
Also extremely interesting the explanation of the polarization of entities into Service to Self orintated entities and Service to Others orientated entities and the implications these have in the ascension process and the roles they play within the bigger picture.
A really deep read and well worth the effort. I have read all four volumes and I am about to tackle vol 5. I thoroughly recommend it.

This "contact" is the only example of so-called channeled material to which I would give an unqualified endorsement -- if by "channeled" one refers to communication with another entity, not one's own subconscious or superconscious, nor "angelic" or hierarchical sources, while in trance.
Guaranteed to interest students of forteana, metaphysics, and matters of the spirit... But, to those of you on the straight and narrow spiritual path, a cautionary note is advised whenever the possibility arises of engaging in "spiritual gossip" that may accompany the "true teachings". And said Goethe: "Thought widens, but paralyzes; whereas action enlivens, but narrows."

poor interpretation.......2004-12-05
Another poor interpretation. Akenaton did not start mono-theism nor were Egyptians poly-theistic, what Akenaton did was stop the corruption of the many attributes of god(Ptah the all) and pass the law for their to be a central deity to focus on(Aton), rather than the 1,000 plus, as ppl were being duped by crooked priest. Akenaton worshiped Aton and so change his name to Akenaton to represent this. Creation was represented by deities, as Egyptians had a deity for everything that existed, as all these things were the construct of Ptah. Since you could not know the all by making up fantasy, then, you could only know the all through its manifested work, which is why Egyptians practiced animism. Akenaton simply did what was bound to take place to keep down all of the favoritism and corruption for one attribute over the others in relation to politics, as this was clearly a exploit in his day.

I bought this book after reading Freud's "Moses and Monotheism", where it is attached to the pharaoh Akkenaton the origin of a monotheist cult and religion to the god Athon( or Athun), later to be dismissed and abandomned by his son Tutankamom who pulled back to polytheism. The importance of the debate is big, nothing less than the influence this type of cult had on the formation of the Jewish religion (Jews were held captives in Egypt at Akenaton's time) and later on Christianism and Catholicism.
"The Conceptions of God in Ancient Egypt - The One and the Many" was written in German in the 1970's and translated into English in the 80's. Dates are of the utmost importance here due to the archeological material available to the researcher, which has in his hands much more pertinent information than a writer 50 years ago. Both writer and translator are eminent figures of modern Egyptology who has in German and in France many of its most important researchers. The task they face is gigantic, nothing less than trying to interpret the meaning of abstract religious concepts, the concept of God being the foremost.
Religion is one of the most important aspects of a Culture, if not the most important aspect, and has to be interpreted by its own sticks and standards and not by the stick and measures of any other Culture, and this is the essential point which shows the true hardship of managing this subject and then avoiding the acceptance of standars of Western theology. Thus, many questions appear which ask for the most excruciating analisys from the part of the author : what was the meaning of God for the Ancient Egyptian? Is the word God equivalent to the (consonantal) word for god in the language of old Egypt, ntr? Was Egypt first polytheist and later monotheist or the other way around? What is the rule syncretism played in the religion? Was there a people's religion parallel to a cultured religiosity? How the representation of God evolved in time from fetishism (the representation of gods trough not animated things, an staff for instance) to representation of gods trough animals (hawks, ibises, crocodiles etc) and, in the later stages, trough human forms or anthropomorphism and even in a triad of mixed forms (staff, hawk and human)?
"The Conceptions of God in Ancient Egypt" is a challenging book but it is not an introductory book targeted for the lay reader, who must be familiar with a difficult vocabulary; wadi, ostraca, papyri, nome, ennead are some of the words in English that crop up in the text and are not conveniently explained by Erik Honnung neither easily found in a good English lexicon. Also a good old Egyptian glossary is missing, thus making the understanding of the texts a real nightmare to the common reader. Finally, also is lacking a good map of ancient North Africa to better locate the cities and geographical accidents cited in the book. As a good add-on, there is a good cronological map of the dynasties of Egypt and a much interesting glossary of the names of the many gods quoted in the book with some paralel with their Greek counterparts.
To sum it up, the book is a pretty good one but could not be taken as an easy read for any one not familiar with things of old Egypt.
Essential for the Study of Egyptian Religion.......2003-08-09
This book is at the top of many lists for those wishing to study ancinet Egyptian religion in-depth. Upon reading it, I can see why! This book explores what exactly the ancient Egyptians thought god(s) were, how the gods reacted to humans, and how humans reacted to the gods. Given the unique and often confusing nature of the concept "ntr" or god, this book is very useful indeed.
It is extermely detailed, (though admittedly dry,) and leaves the reader with a good idea of what the Egyptian Gods were like and how they developed throughout the millenia. The beginning also nicely addresses the erroneous notion that the Egyptians were really monotheists from the start, and that only the ignorant common people held polythistic beliefs; a Victorian bias that taints the studies of many ancient cultures. Horning clearly has a great deal of respect for the ancient Egyptian religion, and as a Kemetic pagan, I really appreciate that this book exists in English.
Interesting Book.......2000-07-23
I thought the chapters on the characteristics and manifestations of the gods were fascinating, and I also enjoyed the chapter about the names of the gods. Many people love this book, but I found the chapter on the use of the word ntr to be somewhat dry. The information in this chapter was very informative, but the subject matter just did not hold my interest; perhaps this shows more where my interest lay, rather than the skill of the author. However those interested in this aspect of Egyptian religion, will probably get a lot out of this book.

The Warm Springs Indians insist that the unburied bones of the Ancient One have been turned into a skep, a murderous spirit that haunts the darkness. As winter closes in on the steppes of the Columbia Plateau, accusations of ritualized murder fly between the Indian and white communities -- and the fight turns deadly when a second skeleton is unearthed.
In the midst of the turmoil, Emmett and Anna are paralyzed by their own demons. This estrangement could prove deadly if they stop watching each other's back long enough for a killer to target them too. And at the center of it all are the Ancient Ones, exacting a terrible price as the dark path to resolution runs a gauntlet through the boneyards of prehistory.

If you're a fan of Indian Country whodunits, Kirk Mitchell is tops. I could go on, but I'd just be repeating myself. This is a terrific read.
A very gripping read..........2003-03-11
I read 'Ancient Ones' and the prequels, 'Spirit Sickness' and 'Cry Dance' in one week-end, that is how un-put-down-able I consider these books. This one kept me up well into the night.
To comment on the much debated comparisons to Tony Hillerman: I am a great fan of the Leaphorn/Chee series, but personally, I am finding I prefer Mitchell to Hillermanm at this point. I find Mitchell's books faster paced and more complex, therefore more gripping. With Hillerman, it got too easy to guess who the bad guy was. It was always (or almost always) the white one.
With regard to the relationship between Parker and Tunipseed, I think it ads a great deal to the story and in no way detracts from the plot. This level of character development is rare in these types of books, and I find it a refreshing change. It makes them real, flaws and all, as opposed to being two-dimensional cookie-cutter crimefighters. Strangely, no one seems to have a problem when Hillerman's main characters are involved in relationships. I wonder if it is the child abuse angle that is making people uncomfortable here. In any case, I am looking forward to seeing how Emmett and Anna's relationship evolves in the fourth book (I hope the author has plans for a fourth book in this series, if not more!).
Not Quite Hillerman.......2002-09-16
Ancient Ones is part of a series featuring two Indian cops. The story revolves around 14,000 year old skelton that could change the pre-history in America. The plot moves along and there are plenty of suspects/bad guys/victims/crazies.
I guess my problem was all the hype comparing this to Tony Hillerman - it isn't. Mr. Mitchell does not catch the pathos of a Hillerman novel, nor should he. However, he does have an engaging voice and a sense of plotting. I thought the sexual politics pushed credulity a bit far and was a bit distracting from main plot.
Overall, it is worth a look.

This third novel in the series about BIA criminal investigator Emmett Parker, a Comanche, and FBI agent Anna Turnipseed, a Modoc, doesn't seem nearly as well organized as the first two. There are also unexplained overtones of supernatural involvement which grate, compared to the thoroughly realistic treatment of events in their earlier cases. This time, they're off to Oregon to "keep the peace" during the brouhaha that follows the discovery of what is apparently a Caucasoid skeleton nearly 15,000 years old. This has major political implications for the rights of Native Americans as "original inhabitants," and the scientific community isn't happy about the pressure put on by the Warm Springs Reservation for immediate reburial of the remains. Thaddeus Rankin, renowned anthropologist, has his own cultural and political agenda. And underlying everything is the tension between Emmett and Anna as they try to get their personal relationship off the ground. Some of this is well handled, especially the true causes of Rankin's medical condition, but Mitchell also seems perfectly happy with the antiscientific superstition and politically correct religious bigotry behind NAGPRA -- the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act. (I'm sure my own biases are showing there. . . .)

BRAVO KIRK MITCHELL ! I LOVED THIS BOOK !! THE ANCIENT ONES WAS A GREAT MYSTERY THRILLER , WITH BELIEVEABLE CHARACTERS. I KEPT GUESSING WHO DONE IT TILL THE END ! I WAS HUNGRY FOR MORE EACH CHAPTER . IT REMINDED ME A LITTLE BIT OF THE X- FILES TV SHOW .I CAN'T WAIT TO READ MORE OF HIS BOOKS . ANCIENT ONES WOULD BE PROUD OF KIRK MITCHELL AND HIS ENTHRALLING STORY TELLING !

Nice book, but not written by Richard Francis Burton.......2006-08-04
I ordered this book primarily because of the illustrations by Leon Carre. I just purchased a tarot deck by Lo Scarabeo which featured his work from The Thousand and One Nights so I thought it would be interesting to see the originals. There are only a few illustrations in this book, and, note that the book is abridged. I am disappointed with how few illustrations there are considering how nice the rest of the book looks. If you are interested in Leon Carre's work, the tarot deck will have many, many more images for you to enjoy.

Two Thumbs up for The Ancient Ones!.......2006-06-22
This is a beautifully designed, well executed, and powerful publication that leaves the reader both informed and mystified by its contents. Hans Li successfully integrates stunning visual images of the architecture of the ancient Americas with verbal excerpts underlying the myths that surround the creation of such structures, thereby linking the notion of ancient ritual and spiritual ceremony with what is essentially one of the earliest formations of civilization. "The Ancient Ones" underlies a connection between the spiritual and the tangible, between legend and civilization, and between man nature with a kind of purpose and humility that is both poignant and alluring. I highly recomend a look through his website www.theancient1s.com which contains all the images from the book, plus a few bonuses on the author and his exhibitions.
