Malevich and Film
ASIN: 3980498972 |
Book Description
What did Kazimir Malevich (1878 - 1935), the proponent of pure abstraction in painting, have to do with film, that mechanical repository of everything that is banal and worthless? It was only in 1924 that Malevich described film as a system that fixed reality beyond the cultural idea. Nonetheless, between 1925 and 1929, he wrote several articles on film as well as a script.
These texts, by the man who created the 'black square', which are assembled in this volume and translated into English for the first time, lead us to the heart of the debate about movement and acceleration as central metaphors for modernity in the international avant-garde. His contradictory reflections on this new medium document the friction between the metaphysical program of Suprematist abstraction and the mediatic attributes of film.
Malevich arranges the melodramas of Mary Pickford, the comedies of Monty Banks, the films of Sergei Eisenstein, Dziga Vertov, Walter Ruttmann, and Yakov Protazanov within his historical model of the rise of Modernism from Cezanne through Cubism and Futurism, to Suprematism. In this process, almost all of his essays deal with the `missed encounter' between film and art, because Malevich perceives film as the perfected form, not of Naturalism but of the principles of the new painting - dynamism and abstraction.

An honest, great biography........2006-09-18
I don't normally review books, but felt obligated to put in some great words for Oksana's book. I like biographies, and happened to find Oksana's book while learning more about Russian culture.
Her book is a very honest and heartfelt story of her trials and tribulations. A great read for anyone, not just those interested in International Marriage.
A Must Read!.......2006-02-18
A warm and refreshing look at an international marriage.
A wonderfully refreshing true story of a young woman's odyssey. Herein is a true and heartwarming biography. Two points stand out in my mind which highlight the particular strengths of these writings. First, the author did an excellent job demonstrating her social, emotional, marital and spiritual growth from her early days in Russia to the present. The book demonstrates in a powerful way how God can shape and form us, through our shared adversities. Oksana Leslie's story evinces hope for her reader...its a great inspiration. The second item I enjoyed was the way she chronicled how her various personal experiences helped change her perspective about Americans. At first, she considered many people she met n this newly adopted country to be silly and not caring, however, once she met folks who showed compassion such as the church members in Dallas or the man who helped her the night she had an auto accident, I say once she encountered these truly kind and compassionate Americans, her perspective changed and broadened. The book powerfully teaches new visitors to this great land that we can't put groups of people into labels...each individual is created by God and is unique. I particulary appreciated the way the author demonstrated this growing awareness in her own soul and the key part the Christian church played in this development. A must read for any man or woman engaged in a multi-national relationship.
A true story of a Russian woman that find herself in an ever changing world.......2006-02-16
This book is like a meeting a good friend. She shares her life story. This is not a Cinderella fairytale, this is just a true story of a Russian woman that find herself in an ever changing world. I do not think the word 'useful' is appropriate to such kind of books. We do not use friends. We feel with them. We are happy when they succeed, and we are sorry when they fail. Oksana did a great job: she made it through the international marriage, she saved her husband's life several times, she gave birth to two cute sons, she succeeded in career, and she wrote and published a book. I think we all have something to learn from her.

Well, it is really a biography of the author. I didn't like the book at all. I borrow it from a friend, and after reading it I realized that it was a complete waste of time. There is nothing new, and nothing useful.

intriguing look at Russia's nouveau riche .......2006-06-29
She, Serge and their nine years old daughter lived the good life of the Russian nouveau riche in the upscale Rublyovka section of Moscow until her spouse was gunned down just outside their luxurious apartment. Stunned and grieving with no satisfaction from the police, who initially suspect her, the wealthy young widow is determined to maintain their high standard of living while also avenging the murder of her loved one.
As she plans to keep the business running smoothly, she turns to Oleg, who can navigate places that the police would fear entering. She wants to hire him to find her husband's killer, whose composite picture she has seen at the police station and has previously met at the restaurant. However, she will soon learn more than she wants to know about how Moscow's ruthless business world operates; her late spouse's real trade; and especially Serge's darkest secrets.
This is an intriguing look at Russia's nouveau riche especially those of high society who live in the exclusive Rublyovka neighborhood like Yeltsin. The story line is driven mostly by the lead female, but supported by her contacts with the upper class elite and the lower class minion as she works both sides of the street. Fans of deep dramas in which the locale is the star will enjoy this solid character study starring an affluent Russian woman with two divergent goals.

Sensational.......2006-01-13
Even though Casual is Oksana Robski's first novel, she proves her mastery, wit, and writing talent easily. Originally written in Russian and first published early in 2005, this book is about the elite of the Moscow society. It describes in minute details the life and intigues that go on among the residents of the posh Rublevo-Uspenskoe highway (a place where such people as former president Yeltsin own villas). It is a life filled with high-class cars, $50,000/day shopping sprees, vacations to Courchevel, houses with warming marble floors and dinners with caviar and Crystal. Although the book angered many Russians (probably for the sole reason that it described such an unattainable life and people who profit off others), it is written brilliantly. The original Russian version is extremely witty and shows how well Robski can use the language.
The heroine of the book is a woman whose husband, a rich businessman, was just murdered. She is left with a posh estate, money, 9-year old child, and a bunch of questions about her husbands real life. As she tries to answer these questions and get over her grief, we learn about her attempts to establish her own business, the brutality of the Russian reality, relationships between "rich" and "poor" people, and her husbands little secrets.
At first it might look like a snob wrote that book. Believe me, it is nothing like Paris Hilton's "All About Me" book. Robski is very insightful and seems to know a lot about life outside of Rublevka.
I would definitely recommend this book to anyone - Russian or not. You will learn a lot about living large in Moscow. I would also recommend her other 2 books: Day of Happiness: Tomorrow and "Pro Ljuboff/on" ("About Loff/on")

Dr. David K. Sakheim, co-editor of Out of Darkness: Understanding Satanism and Ritual Abuse
If you know or suspect that you are a survivor of ritual abuse, you are not alone. This book is an inspiring, comprehensive guide showing that healing is possible. In a clear and gentle voice, Oksana helps demystify ritual abuse cults, and offers groundbreaking strategies for recovery. Drawing on inner wisdom and spirituality Oksana takes survivors step by step through the healing process.
This has got to be, definitely, the best book yet available on ritual abuse healing. I loved the whole book. I kept saying "Yes, yes, yes - this is how it is"...I thank you, my inner kids thank you, and I think future generations will thank you.

Customer Reviews:
Way to go - finally a book for ritual abuse victims.......2007-08-28
This is a MUST HAVE for counselors and victims of ritual abuse. The most comprehensive book on the market. Just about every subject is addressed by Ms. Oksana. It is easy to understand, and yet an experienced therapist would learn something. It is a book that I would take out again and again to reference a specific subject.
THE SURVIVORS BIBLE! -Helpful for survivors and their allies.......2006-12-28
A Safe Passage to Healing is by far one of the best books written on this deeply painful and often overwhelming subject. I'd highly recommend it to survivors of ritual abuse and those who love them. This book is full of helpful chapters that will gently enlighten and provide some sense of comfort to the reader.
Chrystine Oksana has a deep sense of compassion and understanding when discussing some of the most difficult experiences ritual abuse survivors overcame. She's structured her book in easy to read short chapters providing short breaks in the author's narrative for those who may be upset by reading this material. Chrystine also gives the reader trigger warnings ahead of time when difficult subject matter is approaching.
Overall it's a very easy read and survivors and those who love them will walk away with a greater understanding of ritual abuse and a deeper sense of compassion for those who successfully endured it. This is one of the best books I've read and I'd recommend it to my survivor friends.
What a wonderfull book.......2006-06-24
I got this book about a year ago and I love it. It has helped me so much. It is a must for anyone who has gone through ritual abuse or knows someone who has been.
Helpful for ritual survivors.......2006-04-23
I have read many books for survivors of abuse, but nothing compares to this book. It's like my guide, my bible. I refer to it often, especially when I need reminders that I am not bad, that it will not always hurt so much, and I will get better. I am a SRA survivor and would recommend this book for those that have been ritually abused as well as therapists, family members and anyone wanting to learn more about ritual abuse, or help survivors as they work on their issues. It is helpful for survivors and their loved ones that are just starting to remember and face the reality of their childhood, as well as for individuals that have been in therapy awhile. For me, it reminds me of The courage to Heal book, but more specific for those who have been abused ritually, in cults, and those who developed Dissociative Identity Disorder (formally Multiple Personality Disorder) in order to cope and survive such horrendous abuse.
I will always keep this book, and refer to it as often as I need. The book offers hope to those who have been abused in any kind of ritual abuse, and for the people that care about them.
THE REAL THING.......2004-11-03
SRA does exist! I would have never dreamed this up. It is very disturbing when the flashbacks start, but it makes complete sense now. This book really saved my life. I love the way the author begins - by helping us not to feel crazy. It is a great suppliment to my own therapy and doesn't contradict the progress that I am making. This is a incredible book for therapists too giving them insight. Although there is not much out there regarding SRA, you wouldn't want any other book than this one. It doesn't go into stories. I have my own. It is a practical guide full of information that I need now. The author is a survivor of SRA and she also uses statements of advice from other SRA survivors. The concepts she discusses are to-the-point and extremely clear. The book is not filled with excessive wordiness and someone else's stories that tend to bog me down when I just need answers immediately. The chapters are short and organized well. The author stated that the reader could skip around and did not need to go through each chapter if not needed. However, I would recommend reading and learning even if you think you know about the subject. Looking at the index, the author covers every aspect of SRA. She is very careful not to point fingers at any group or religious sect. This is a great book that immediatley started making me feel better about myself. The author takes a sensitive approach. Her style is positve, uplifting and hopeful. I learned to trust in myself which is the most important skill I needed to learn about myself. In just a few minutes, I learned about the direction I needed to go and things I needed to stop doing. I know I will use this book as a guide for many years. Please understand, SRA is real and not dreamed up. If you have had SRA experiences or know someone who has had, please get this book and begin the healing.

Customer Reviews:
Wonderful final book in the series!.......2006-11-26
"Oksana", the fourth and final book in the Heirs of Anton series, is by far the best of them all! "Oksana" delivers a monumental punch within the first few chapters that, despite some dragging parts in the middle of the book, will keep you entranced until the very end. The romantic element in this novel also feels more authentic than in the previous novels, even if it is far-fetched. "Oksana" ties up all the loose ends and questions of the Heirs of Anton books in some unexpected ways, and delivers a fantastic and genius ending to the series.
I'd say more, but chances are, if you have been reading the series, you already love it, and already plan to read the final book. If you have not read the previous three novels, I encourage you to read them as they were designed to be read, in reverse-chronological order ("Ekaterina" first, then "Nadia", then "Marina", and finally, "Oksana").
After finishing "Ekaterina", the first book of the Heirs of Anton series, I wondered why on earth I would want to read the next three novels, when the mystery had been solved in the first one? Sure, a few questions lingered, but not enough to really hook me. But somehow I couldn't stop thinking about it, so I bought the rest of the series - and I am SO GLAD that I did! Each book in this series has been a joy to read, each complex in and of itself, and yet also contributing to the underlying plot that is woven throughout all four novels. This is, without a doubt one of the best fiction series I have ever had the pleasure of reading!
(I don't give out 5 star ratings very often or easily, so i truly recommend this series!)
Grade: A
Great ending to a great series!.......2006-03-25
This final book in the "Hiers of Anton" series was superbly written and I enjoyed it so much. Downs and Warren have done an excellent job in this book, as well as the series as a whole, in telling the story of this Russian family and how they discover who God has called them to be. The story grips you from the beginning and the ending is awesome! This series was written backwards, starting with the most current family members and ending with the oldest. I look forward to reading the series again, only in reverse! Downs and Warren have won a fan in me!
Oksana.......2005-11-18
Just before the Royal House of Romanov in Russia is forced into house arrest by the Revolutionists, Imperial Tsar Nikolai Romanov entrusts one his most precious belongings to a young Mennonite, Anton Klassen. Agreeing to protect and escort two of the Tsar's servants to safety, Anton travels to the palace to retrieve Oksana and Yulia.
Oksana, however, carries many secrets with her as Anton takes her away, including the fact she is not who she claims to be. Originally born Olga Nikolaeva Romanov, Grand Duchess of Russia, she uses the name of the faithful chambermaid who exchanged places with Olga in the palace. Trained to be her body double, the real Oksana chose of her own free will to remain behind to save Olga. Now under a borrowed name, Olga will have to learn to cope with a new life, even as she waits to be reunited with her family.
I find it very interesting that the books in this series have been done backwards as it were, with each book in the series going further into history instead of forward. Oksana is probably the best book in the Heirs of Anton series, aside from the first one, Ekaterina. Downs and Warren have written a wonderful romance combined with suspense. Oksana was a very well done novel.

Book Description
This biography came into being after extensive research in Moscow, Berlin, Paris, New York, and Los Angeles. The author is the first to analyze Sergei
Eisenstein's diaries and correspondencematerials that were inaccessible in the past. Eisenstein's relationswith Freemasons, Rosicrucians and Stalin, with rivals, admirers and psychoanalystsare no longer faded out.
Was Eisenstein homosexual? A Stalinist? A conformist? A dissident? He left no clear answers for his biographers. Oksana Bulgakowa's study of Eisenstein's life tries to uncover these themes in his films and drawings, between the lines of his diaries and letters, in his drafts to screenplays, projects, and scientific research. Late in life Eisenstein viewed his research as his only possible means of salvation from the compromises he had consciously made with himself and his creativity.

Entertaining read and a treat for skating fans.......2004-08-19
Who can fail but sympathize with Ms. Baiul, an anomaly in this glittering sport of young women who usually have it all - looks, money, and loving families. That Oksana managed to achieve greatness with none of the above says it all about her talent. Oksana's fans won't be disappointed.
Oksana - professional but not personal.......2004-07-08
I do not like biographies, yet this book was able to keep my attention. Oksana discusses her life as it relates to various parts of ice skating. The only drawback is that you do not learn about the everyday Oksana. You do not learn about any of her other interests (sports done in her training routine do not necessarily count as "fun, relaxing hobbies"), her favorite foods, favorite types of music, or her feelings about having a family or dating.
I love the numerous ways that she compares and contrasts ballet and ice skating without making either activity seem inferior or superior to the other.
She appears to be an emotional person and the writing style is just as emotional - written in typeset, cursive, straight lines, circles, and various colors. The photographs are taken from very interesting perspectives, and do make sure that you see the photo of the man doing a headstand without the use of his hands! She did a very interesting job of combining a book about the factual aspects of figure skating with the story of her life - she even explains how to do basic jumps and spins. Many ice skating books explain figure skating for beginners, but this book is a great starter for those considering a professional career on the ice.
A Must for the skater!!!.......2002-02-13
This book is fulled with beautiful photos and tips
Truly a portrait of Oksana.......1999-06-28
I sprinted to the bookstore the day this book was released and snatched up the last copy. And, by and large, I wasn't at all disappointed. It's beautifully done, with style and originality. Tons of great pictures of Oksana, and she writes in a pleasant, simple manner. But I get the feeling that she just wasn't ready to truly share herself at the time, which makes sense, considering when she wrote it. The only other problem is that in light of the changes in her life since this book was done, it seems to focus on a very short period of time in Oksana's life. Nonetheless, Oksana is a remarkable, beautiful, incredibly talented young woman, and I wish her all the best in the world. I have a feeling that if things continue as they are now, the next book she does, if she does one, will be a lot more intimate.
Oksana's is a Jewel. A Figure Skater. An Actress. A Dancer........1999-03-19
Oksana has a secret that she will keep because her secret is her. She is an actress who makes a song reality in through her own visions. She's a dancer who captivates. There has been no one else to impress the world of ice skating before or after Oksana. She will leave a strike on the ice for a lifetime. This book is Oksana's words and is a an item of figure skating history, but Oksana is still the real treasure. We have all been blessed to have been able to experience the way Oksana peforms through her vulnerable spirit.

This book is a must to understanding the Ukrainian psyche........1998-11-28
This book is a catalog of the 1983 exhibition of the Harvard College Library, the Ukrainian Research Institute, and the Ukrainian Studies Fund of Harvard University which marked the 50th anniversary of the Ukrainian Famine of 1932-1933. As such, the book is more pictures than words, but they present a powerful case against not only the Stalinist regime, but against Stalin himself in only eighty-some pages.
To understand the current economic, political, and social situation in struggling Ukraine one needs to understand the Ukrainian psyche. To understand the Ukrainian psyche one must understand their peculiar history as an oft-invaded frontier-land, and especially as a vassal of Russia for nearly a millenium. This book starkly illustrates a particularly grim episode which occurred early in the 70 year period of Soviet subjugation.
Although the famine was not limited strictly to Ukraine, it was a Stalin-induced event primarily directed at breaking down Ukrainian resistance to collectivization and destruction of the "kurkuls", the rich Ukrainian peasant class. An overarching aim of Stalin's was the completion of Ukrainian subjugation which had not yet been successful to that point of Soviet rule.
This catalog of the 1983 exhibition is a powerful examination of one of the clearer cases in world history of state terrorism. Although viewed in retrospect, the collection of both illustrations and photographs appears as a remarkable foreshadowing of human tragedies like the holocaust, Rawanda, and Bosnia. The book is must reading and a vital reference for anyone with an interest in Ukraine.
