5 out of 5 stars Christine Feehan Fan - Carpathian Series.......2007-03-26

I love the Carpathian series from Christine Feehan. But I was a litlle dismayed when I bought the anthology "Dark Dreamers", then ordered the "After Twilight" anthology from Amazon, and it turned out the CF short stories were the same.

3 out of 5 stars Only one out of the three stories was worth reading.......2006-11-25

In Masquerade, Jason Blackthorne has spent the last three hundred years filling his time with different hobbies in order to drive away the empty loneliness that haunts him. That is, until he met Leanne. She immediately knows in her heart that she was born to love him. Jason, however, is desperate to drive her away despite his love for her. Their struggles will climax in a decision that Jason must make: Make Leanne his own for all eternity or sacrifice his life for her.

Dark Dream is a sensuous love story between an ancient Carpathian warrior named Falcon, and a psychic named Sara. Sara has spent fifteen years on the run from a ruthless and powerful vampire who murdered her family. She runs into Falcon in a dark alleyway and her life is changed forever. Fifteen hundred years ago, Falcon wrote a diary and dedicated it to his lifemate, a woman he knew he would never know because of the mission on which he has dedicated his life. Sara found the diary in a dig in Egypt and has kept it by her side, knowing on some level of her consciousness that the diary was written specifically for her. The vampire who has stalked Sara is now very close and Falcon is Sara's only hope of escape.

Midnight Serenade begins with hunters stalking a wolf. The hunters are in the process of killing it when Stephanie Shane, a wildlife researcher, steps in and saves him. In the process of administering first aid, she is bitten and the wolf makes his escape. Stephanie, however, tracks the blood stains to the house of the local vet, named Rick Donavon. He's there of course but there's no sign of a wolf. Rick and Stephanie are drawn toward each other, despite their heated arguments. Like in Masquerade, the story climaxes in a life or death decision for Rick: Should he sacrifice his life to save Stephanie or make her his own?

Masquerade is pretty good. It's well written, plot is solid and even the prose is adequate. My only complaint is with character development, but the problem could also be with over-editing. Jason easily comes alive, his emotions jump out of the pages, but Leanne is quite the opposite. The focus is heavily on Jason, but since Leanne comes across as a two-dimensional, shallow character, the story isn't balanced very well.

Dark Dream, I think, is the best story in this book. Christine Feehan's prose is, as usual, exemplary. She develops her characters and her plot very well and you easily lose yourself in the story.

Midnight Serenade, in my opinion, is the weakest of the three. The prose is not very good at all. I found trouble relating to the characters. It was written with a heavy focus on showing what the characters were doing but not what they're feeling.

Overall I thought this was one of the better anthologies I've read in this genre. It seems writing short stories is not an easy task since you have to condense so much of the story into a small number of pages, which is why I don't really care to read short stories written by many of my favorite authors. I much prefer full-length novels. I think, however, you'll find this an entertaining and easy read if you can overlook some of the shortcomings mentioned above.

4 out of 5 stars Feehan does it again........2006-03-01

This book is interesting in that it highlights the ancients that were sent out before the time period of the other books.

5 out of 5 stars Could NOT Put this one Down!.......2004-05-31

This is my first time reading Amanda Ashley & Rhonda Thomson, but definitely not my last! Both are now that greatest of all finds--new favorite authors! I can't remember the last time I read a collection of short stories, but I wanted to sample these authors in hopes of finding more paranormal romances to enjoy. I'm new to this genre, the closest I came was Rice's vampire series, now seen as incomparable in excitement, sensuality, and satisfaction. I've seen the future & it's not Rice or her Lestat.

Thomson's Werewolf story is the most believable, moving and romantic of its type, unique as incredible as that seems, for this wolf-man is almost too human, & sexy is an understatement. I may never go back to mere human romances again. I hope this author keeps her unique edge and continues to breathe life into such marvelous character-driven stories.

Amanda Ashley creates a female antagonist, Leanne, who is a bit too incredible & perfect to believe in fully, plus annoyingly reluctant one minute, accepting too much too soon the next. Jason, not an imaginative name for a vampire from Europe, & Leanne go back & forth constantly--vowing to never see each other again, only to fall back into each other's arms repeatedly--a tiring plot design of crisis & fulfillment that keeps irritatingly interrupting the reader's escape into the story. This seems a lazy, template-driven way to create tension to me. Still, this is a sensual fantasy fairy tale that will satisfy almost any appetite, though the climax may seem effortful once it's over. Ashley delivers on her promises predictably--I'm still hoping to find an author who will surprise me with an unpredictable ending in this genre. I will peek at Ashley's other paranormals to see if she's a worthy new favorite author to explore fully.

Feehan satisfies completely with another fantastic book from her "Dark" series. Dark Dreams features a powerful ancient Carpathian guardian of his people, about to walk into the sun & end his existence. He has given up in his search of the Light lifemate who could save him from becoming the very evil he hunts & destroys. Same exact plot, just different names and details. We get exactly what we expect in Feehan's Dark series, and the climactic moment, while even thrilling at times & eventually satisfying, gets as stale as monogamy in a loveless marriage after awhile. What makes up for that predictability is Feehan's expert character development which makes us care about & love them like we would a chosen family. The humor is perfectly blended and laugh-out-loud hilarious. The romance & sensuality more fulfilling, detailed & REAL than any other in this genre. Still, the laziest phrase authors use in ALL of these novels, though gratefully Feehan uses it less than most, "he deepens the kiss", turns me off like a cold shower. Please authors & EDITORS, delete that phrase from your stories--it adds nothing to our knowledge of the characters or story, and is just unnecessary sloth.

It is exciting to read each author's different idea of what would make mythic monsters romantic and acceptable to the human characters & readers alike. I'm addicted to this new-for-me genre because these authors DO make suspending reality fairly easy, an escape sorely needed in today's world of human monster's with no morals. Here instead, we are confronted with morally good creatures traditionally seen as monsters that are anything BUT. Thanks to these three authors for introducing me to a new source of pleasure--short novel length stories packed into a single-book bargain. I look forward to filling my selves with more books from all three! Like those potato chips we can't eat just one of, these stories are irresistable.

2 out of 5 stars Two stories okay, one very poor - not a keeper.......2003-08-14

If you like vampire romances - as I do - you might think that this book is worth buying; after all, it offers three different vampire-type romances from different authors. But, as with all anthologies, quality varies and in the end it's not worth the purchase price.

Amanda Ashley's Masquerade is better than a number of her longer novels, though it contains yet another tortured vampire who tries to give up the woman he loves because he won't `subject' her to what he is. Jason loves Leanne, but has only approached her because she was in danger. He can't resist spending some time with her, but he knows that it's only a matter of time before he must send her away for her own good. Anyone who's read any of Ashley's novels will know how the story goes. What set this one apart for me was the allegory with the Phantom of the Opera musical. Ashley draws comparisons between `Phantom' and Jason's existence as a vampire. Enjoyable - perhaps 3 stars.

It's really unfortunate that the longest story in this anthology was also by far the worst. Christine Feehan's Dark Dream was appallingly bad. The protagonists meet and `fall in love' in the space of about an hour, right at the start of the book. Oh, sure, Sara is scared of Falcon at first because she thinks he's a vampire (he isn't; he's some sort of weird sub-vampiric species Feehan has invented for her books, which I've never read); but within seconds she `sees' into his eyes and she `knows' him as someone she's known in her dreams for years. And then they're apart for the vast majority of this 150-page novella. The rest of the story is a vampire hunt: it's violent and ugly and unutterably boring. There was far too little interaction between the protagonists, and I wasn't convinced that they were in love. Oh, and just how many times does Falcon have to `exchange' with Sara before she's converted?! Awful.

Finally, Rhonda Thompson's Midnight Serenade is somewhat different: Rick is a werewolf, and Stephanie is an environmentalist whose job is studying and filming wolves in the wild. This story felt rushed; I would have liked to know much more about how Rick became a werewolf, and I would also have liked to see the protagonists get to know each other better - it was more like falling in lust than in love.

Overall, this isn't a collection I'd read again.

Book Description

It was the perfect place to disappear . . .

When Kacy Macgrath's life crumbled two years ago, she changed her name and escaped to her grandmother's cottage in Ireland. Here she lives anonymously, with no reminders of the past--except the terrifying images that continue to haunt her dreams. Images of the stormy night her husband Alex walked out on her--and fell into the raging waters near their Long Island home. After his death, Kacy uncovered secrets about Alex she was better off not knowing, so she ran away. Now someone is watching her.

Braedon Roche has traveled across an ocean looking for justice--to expose Kacy Macgrath as a master forger who, along with her late husband, had nearly destroyed his career as an art dealer. What Braedon doesn't expect is his undeniable attraction to the fragile widow hiding behind a web of deception. But Braedon isn't the only man following Kacy. A savage killer stalks from the shadows, chipping away at her sanity, and trapping her in an unspeakable nightmare. . . .

4 out of 5 stars Good, but predictable.......2004-11-12

AFTER TWILIGHT is a contemporary romantic suspense that you just can't put down. The mystery in the story is predictable, but the book is so fast-paced and well-written that it just doesn't matter. The relationship between Braedon and Kacy developes at high speed. Man, wouldn't it be nice if you could just fall in love and forgive everything and look forward to tomorrow? That's what happens in AFTER TWILIGHT.

5 out of 5 stars Non-Stop Action..........2004-07-30

After Twilight was an awesome read. 99% of the story takes place over a 4 day period & you wouldn't think there could be so much excitement in that short of a time period but there sure is. This book will keep you guessing from the very beginning and the romance scenes are great. This is the first Dee Davis book I've read & I've already bought 3 more because she's an awesome writer. Be prepared to be sucked in the moment you open this book.

2 out of 5 stars A disappointment........2004-06-26

I have to say that I was disappointed by this book. The characters seemed very 2 dimensional. Both the main characters had a past but they were able to get past them a little too quickly for my liking. The female was weak and looking for a man to save the day, which is just what the man wanted to do. It was too sickly sweet for my taste. There were a few twists and turns and I liked the Irish setting, but for the most part I ended up skimming.

4 out of 5 stars Steamy romantic suspense.......2002-07-28

Dee Davis is one of the few authors today writing romantic suspense - a genre which seems to be overlooked by many publishers but which readers are crying out for.
"After Twilight" is an engrossing novel with the heroine, Kacy Macgrath, fleeing from her abusive husband who has walked out on her. He later meets his death under suspicious circumstances as a result of which Kacy takes refuge in Ireland staying in her grandmother's cottage which she has inherited.
Enter Braedon Roche who is chasing Kacy as he believes she is an art forger.
The novel gives an attractive escapist picture of Ireland, and against this backdrop, Kacy and Braedon play out their romance. Dee Davis creates some enchanting and realistic love scenes and the plot twists and turns with Kacy fleeing from her enemies who have managed to follow her to Ireland. Some scenes are pleasantly scary as Kacy tries to keep her former husband's cronies at bay. Both Kacy and Braedon are attractive characters. It's easy to see how they could fall in love with each other.
Dee Davis' second novel, "Just Breathe" is even more exciting.

2 out of 5 stars NOT A WINNER.......2002-05-26

It looks like I must be in the minority in my opinion, but I found this book totally unsatisfying. I didn't care for the heroine, could not connect with the hero, the story line was not at all interesting and the writing was almost juvenile. Was this DD's first novel? Do yourself a favor and skip this one and go directly to DD's "DARK OF THE NIGHT". Now that is a good book and a keeper!

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2007-03-14

I hate to say this, because I really like the authors in this anthology and I love the vampire genre, but I was really disappointed by the stories in this collection. Maybe my expectations were too high given the above.

Castle Wrath by Karin Kallmaker started off really promising. I was chuckling out loud as the character narrated the start of her adventure and I was really enjoying the humorous writing in a style Ms. Kallmaker doesn't normally use. But I dunno, somewhere things shifted and it almost became an entirely different style of story. I think it either should have started differently to fit the later portion, or the initial tone should have been maintained throughout. In the end, aside from that, the story itself just didn't interest me at all. The idea of inheriting a castle in a vampire story had the potential to go in all sorts of wonderful directions, but the direction that Ms. Kallmaker chose wasn't where I wanted to go. By the end I just wasn't interested in what happened to the characters.

Running with Stone Ponies was another story with a lot of potential, but I feel it fell really flat. This time mostly due to what came across to me as amateurish writing. Which I suppose takes a lot of gall for me to say, since my attempts at writing are quite pathetic, but there it is all the same. I felt the relationship between the two main characters developed ridiculously. More that there wasn't really any development at all, it was just suddenly there. At various points while reading I was actually cringing at parts of the plot, or specific phrasing choices. If I'm cringing at the writing, I'm not being swept away into the fantasy.

Elsewhen by Therese Syzmanski was a solid story and one that I did enjoy. But the writing at times was disjointed in a way difficult for me to describe. I felt like characters were all over the place at various points in what they were thinking or feeling, making it difficult for me to follow along as well as I should. That's not to say that characters shouldn't be muddled or confused about what they think, but it needs to be written in a way so that as a reader I'm empathetic, not irritated and taken out of the story.

We Recruit by Julia Watts was okay. I can't really think of anything negative to say about it. It just didn't really grab me either, at least not the latter part. Maybe because they wimped out as vampires. Heh. While being a vastly morally superior stance to take, drinking bottled blood just ain't sexy!

I gave the anthology 3 stars. To me that means it's average, and if you're strongly interested, probably still worth buying and reading. I didn't feel it was a total waste of my time. But I'm still left with that disappointing feeling of being disappointed by an anthology that I had been anticipating with a great deal of excitment. (For context, I own almost all the published novels and anthologies by Karin Kallmaker, Therese Syzmanski, and Julia Watts, so normally I really am a fan!)

5 out of 5 stars Another Good theme collection.......2007-02-18

It's surprising that Bella After Dark has come up with three successive good collections of themed novellas using only four authors. In each of the collections, I have had a favorite story. In the first one Karin Kallmaker's re-telling of the Little Mermaid was my favorite; she also topped the list in BELL BOOK AND DYKE. In this collection, Barbara Johnson out did herself. I was afraid that the stories would be unable to find new territory to explore, but Johnson's pre and post atomic disaster tale did it for me. I hope these women can come up with yet another theme and do as well with it.

3 out of 5 stars Not too bad..........2003-07-07

This set is actually pretty good.

"The Passersby" - starring Morgan Brittany (supermodel and she also appeared as Katherine Wentworth on "Dallas", as well as tons of staple shows from the sixties). Morgan does a credible job here. She gives it a good effort and it pays off. Her Southern accent is sweet and convincing. Where this one falls down is the use of a bland supporting cast. The role of The Seargent was masterfully played by James Gregory in the original but the person playing it here clearly doesn't have much.
Stacy Keach, for some reason, pops in to play Abraham Lincoln at the end before delivering the closing narration. The casting of Keach as host still remains a mystery to me...give me Rod Serling any day.

"The Rip Van Winkle Caper" - starring Tim Kazurinsky.
Kazurinsky gives the main character, Mr. Farwell, an English accent, which is a nice touch. Also laudable are some great sound effects and the addition of a train heist (which is only referred to in the original).

"Four O'Clock" - starring Stan Freberg. Freberg has a good time playing the part, much as Theodore Bikel did in the original.
However, the story itself was one of Serling's paler attempts.
In fact, it was adapted from a short story that itself is rather brief and unimaginative.

"The Monsters Are Due On Maple Street" - starring Frank John Hughes. You have to listen closely for Hughes' part...there are four other male neighbors who are equally vocal in the Maple Street skurmish. The supporting cast are very good...perhaps better than the actors in the original version. Just my opinion, but I always felt that the TV version was a little too pretentious, much like "The Shelter". Good sound effects here as well, especially at the end where the 'monsters' make their appearance.
