Book Description
Take one food writer named Cranky Agnes, add a hitman named Shane, mix them together with a Southern mob wedding, a missing necklace, two annoyed flamingos, and a dog named Rhett and you’ve got a recipe for a sexy, hilarious novel about the disastrous side of true love…
Agnes Crandall’s life goes awry when a dognapper invades her kitchen one night, seriously hampering her attempts to put on a wedding that she’s staked her entire net worth on. Then a hero climbs through her bedroom window. His name is Shane, no last name, just Shane, and he has his own problems: he’s got a big hit scheduled, a rival trying to take him out, and an ex-mobster uncle asking him to protect some little kid named Agnes. When he finds out that Agnes isn’t so little, his uncle has forgotten to mention a missing five million bucks he might have lost in Agnes’s house, and his last hit was a miss, Shane’s life isn’t looking so good, either. Then a bunch of lowlifes come looking for the money, a string of hit men show up for Agnes, and some wedding guests gather with intent to throw more than rice. Agnes and Shane have their hands full with greed, florists, treachery, flamingos, mayhem, mothers of the bride, and—most dangerous of all—each other. Agnes and the Hitman is the perfect combination of sugar and spice, sweet and salty—a novel of delicious proportions.

Hilarious.......2007-10-10
I started this book on a night when I was dead tired and just needed something to keep me awake until an event I had to attend. No problem staying awake; I was laughing out loud. Great one liners, great imagination. I hope these two collaborate on more books.
Get out your frying pan!.......2007-10-08
If you are a fan of Jennifer Crusie at all, you will love this book! If you read "Don't Look Down" and were disappointed, give this book a chance. This is her second collaboration with Bob Mayer and this one is just like her other books. Agnes is a very amusing main character with great quirks. If you enjoyed Bet Me you will enjoy this book.
I love Crusie, but I'm not sold on Agnes.......2007-10-03
Like many have said before, this reminds me of almost all other Crusies I've enjoyed -- a good thing.
However, my expectations for this book were set up by the excerpt at the end of the paperback version of "Don't Look Down." And frankly, they were just not met. I enjoyed the excerpt much more than any of this entire book. I kept waiting for this book to live up to that excerpt's promise.
Now, maybe nothing changed from the excerpt (though it seemed to me it did; however, I did not do a line-by-line proof). But it feels like it did, and at least for now, I'll tread lightly when it comes to the next Crusie/Mayer collaboration.
Much Much Better!.......2007-10-02
Soo much better...
Well done Jenny and Bobbie!! Anges and the Hitman is soo much better than 'Dont Look Down' (The first attempt at romance by Mayer and Crusie)..
It looks like Jenny and Bobbie have finally found the right mix of Humor (HAR!), Action and Romance (and by romance I mean sex!)
If you love Vintage Crusie read Anges and the Hitman.. Anges' and Shane's relationship is a lot like Sophie's and Phinneas' in 'Welcome to Tempation'. A down side? Maybe BUT I love Welcome to Temptation so Im not fussed.
Read It You'll Love It!!!
Has it ALL !.......2007-10-01
I read a lot of novels and this one has it ALL....it is not only hilarious, but it also has the romance along with the mystery and adventure. I highly recommend this book for a nice, relaxing, enjoyable read.

A Great Mix of Romance and Mystery!.......2005-03-09
"Wildflower Brides", was actually 4 books in one. I enjoyed all four stories. I enjoyed the plot, as I have a soft spot for history and pioneer life. For I was once a member of an Old Order Amish sect. The book had just the perfect mixture of romance and mystery. I also recommend "The StoreKeeper's Daughter", by Wanda Brunstetter.

Four interesting interwoven tales.......2003-07-11
As the caravan heads for Oregon, members become like extended family and these four talented authors have used this setting to weave their narratives into one intriguing whole. The characters are fresh and believable. Their problems ring with authenticity and each narrative blends into the next with quiet style. I enjoyed "Wildflower Brides" from the first story to the last. If you like mystery and intrigue mixed with romance you will enjoy book.

Four novellas featuring the same wagon train --.......2003-05-22
This book contains four separate stories about people on a wagon train heading for Oregon. The style of each author is different, but each includes characters from the other stories. This gives the total book some continuity. However, the shortness of each story was frustrating to me and would have rated higher if expounded upon and made into four complete books. Although the last story was my favorite, there was a bit too much drama and all four short stories were much too predictable. More suspense would have proved interesting and would raise my stars ratings.

Great fun in a mystery series.......2006-12-30
Leslie Meier is a great mystery author. Her stories are fun and interesting. The only problem is I fly through them! They are great books though and I truly reccommend this and the other Lucy Stone mystery. Lucy Stone is a heroine that any woman can identify with. She is a housewife and mother with a awesome talent for getting herself into trouble!
Annoying In-Laws To-Be!.......2006-06-09
In the 8th book in the Lucy Stone Mystery Series, wedding bells are ringing in Tinker's Cove, Maine. Lucy Stone's best friend, Sue Finch, has a daughter, Sidra, returning home from her fancy TV job in New York to get married. Sue, who has never met the groom, quickly learns that he is rumored to have become a millionaire in the Internet craze. She runs to Lucy for help, begging her for the use of her backyard gazebo. Wanting to help her friend (and believing that it will be a small wedding), Lucy readily agrees. The groom, Ron, and his mother soon arrive in town in their yacht, upsetting the local fishermen that use the harbor for their lobster fishing business. It seems as though they feel the harbor should be used for private boats only, and the fishermen are soon up-in-arms over the takeover of their waterfront. And when everyone seems to hate the pasty, sullen young groom, everyone quickly begins to question the bride on her choice. His death surprises no one, but Lucy begins to believe that the Finches may have been involved. Fearing the worst, Lucy begins to investigate the murder, and hopes to find that her best friend's family has nothing to do with the death of the unlucky groom.
I have enjoyed each of the Lucy Stone mysteries, and this one did not disappoint. Like a previous reviewer, I was annoyed that the book never explained why Sidra wanted to marry Ron, an annoying character at best. I also would love to see Lucy's husband actually become nice to her (he makes some nasty comments to her that really irritate me) in future installments. I know marriage and family life are not perfect...but some of his comments go a bit far. Besides these two items, I love the series, and feel like I am back for a visit in Tinker's Cove each time I pick up one of the books.
If you enjoy the Jane Jeffry series by Jill Churchill, give this series a try. The 1st book in the series is called "Mistletoe Murder". Enjoy!
First & Last Foray Into The World Of Lucy Stone.......2004-10-05
I make an effort to investigate new authors and characters, and the plot and locale of this book looked enticing at first glance. That was before I began reading with a growing bewilderment at the fact that anyone would like let alone care about ANY of the characters in the swiss-cheese plot. There wasn't one single person I could muster up a bare liking for, let alone an appreciation or a desire to explore more stories. As many of the existing reviews have said, the main character is addled and has a backbone of jelly and an intelligence of Ted Baxter at his best (worst?). Her main kid was a spoiled snotball, her husband an idiot, and the term doormat comes to mind when considering the way she 'fends' for herself with family, coworkers and friends. There was never a detailed or believable reason for the 'bride' to have become engaged to a groom such as he was, and my only regret on the passing of the unappealing fellow was that his intended didn't go along for the ride. As a hard-core New Englander I wanted to enjoy the book and go back for more, but my expectations for smart, likable characters, believable major plots, interesting minor plots and intelligent dialogue prevent me from doing so.
Someone should have shot the entire wedding party..........2004-08-28
This book, like the others in this series that I have read, can hardly be termed "murder mysteries." The protagonist, Lucy Stone, never seem to solve the crimes. Instead, she accidnetly blunders into trouble and the murderer then promptly attacks or kidnaps her.
Like may readers, a book is as escape for me into another world. Lucy Stone's world is one I do not intend to visit again. Her harried supermom performance, coupled with an inability to say no, makes her such a victim that I end up rooting for the bad guys. Her children are lazy brats who manage to get into all sorts of trouble. Her husband is insecure and selfish. Her friends think nothing of imposing on her. If reading this book is a "break," it's a painful one.
Save your money.
Enjoyable reading.......2004-01-19
The whole Lucy Stone series is very enjoyable reading. Lucy is a very regular person with family issues that could apply to alot of people. Sometimes I wish she could have a nicer time of things, but then the story wouldn't be the same. The mysteries she solves are not huge conundrums, but I like to get an idea of who the killer might be before the last page sometimes! Not every mystery book needs to be the end-all of stories--just fun and easy is nice, too. And her series is definitely that. If you are looking for deep darkness, this is not it. But if you want a likable character and easy flowing story, here you go.
Book Description
Winner of the 1998 St. Martin's Press/Malice Domestic Best First Traditional Mystery Contest, Donna Andrews introduces a cast of quirky characters who will pull her heroine in different directions as she plans three successive summer weddings.
When Meg Langslow is roped into being a bridesmaid for the nuptials of her mother, her brother's fiancee, and her own best friend, she is apprehensive. Getting the brides to chose their outfits and those of their bridesmaids (and not change their minds three days later), trying to capture the principals long enough to work out details, and even finding peacocks to strut around the garden during the ceremony--these are things Meg can handle. She can brush off the unfortunate oaf who is smitten with her, and take philosophically her disappointment when she learns that the only eligible man in her small Virginia town (and a delightful hunk he is)is of questionable sexual preference. But even Meg is taken aback when the unpleasant former sister-in-law of Meg's soon-to-be stepfather disappears and is later found dead.
Well, that's one way to zip up a wedding, and Andrews does a fine job of making the three celebrations more fun and more unusual than anything you've ever read in Ann Landers.

Murder With Peacocks.......2007-08-16
This is my first Meg Mystery by Donna Andrews. I am definitely going to buy more of her books. It was not only a mystery but a funny and slightly romatic book. Another book that was hard to put down.
I can see why it won a prize!.......2007-07-12
So, we've got a duck, a small boy, a nutty father who's a doctor and knows all about poisons and climbs trees, a ditzy mother, three brides, a handsome actor who's also running a dress making shop and a bunch of clunky would-be suitors to our heroine Meg; Meg the iron sculptor come wedding planner. Oh yeh, and then there are peacocks!
This is the type of book that I'd love to see as a made for TV movie! Full of silly gags, improbable situations, wonderful earthy characters; all of it mixed all with a taste of murder. Wonderful writing and use of language; you just want to be there. This is the first 'Meg' that I've read but can't wait to taste them all. Enjoy!
Numerous Issues but Great Potential.......2007-01-22
I actually didn't mean to read this book - I love puffins and picked up Murder with Puffins at a bookstore. However, it was fairly obvious right from the start that this was a sequel and that I had to read the first book first. I tracked won Murder with Peacocks down and was impressed with the Agatha Award posted on the cover. I settled in for an evening read.
It's important to accept up front that this is meant to be a lighthearted read. The book doesn't hide this at all - it trumpets it from the start. Meg Langslow is a single ironworker who returns to her small hometown in order to be maid of honor - not to just one bride, but to three. The story is really all about those wedding preparations, the insane cast of family members, the owner of the dress shop (a gorgeous, literate hunk who everyone thinks is gay) and then a few deaths that are thrown in to annoy the wedding plans.
This is one of those books where I loved the details but cringed repeatedly at the plot itself. Meg is supposed to be a smart, educated, take-care-of-herself chick who embraces the un-girly craft of metalwork and living far from home. However, when it comes to actions, she's a doormat. She lets everyone in her life use her - her family, her friends, even strangers. The main reason she likes Michael is that he's nice to look at. The educated part is an afterthought. For some reason every other man around her is drawn to her like moths to a flame, and she judges many of them by their body shape. I just didn't find her character very rounded, or to be honest, someone I'd root for. People she's grown up with her entire life are dropping dead left and right and she doesn't care at all.
I also found the plot frustrating. It was clearly obvious from moment one that Michael was not gay - and these two spend TONS of time together, pretty much every waking moment. However, the only times he ever tries to tell her the truth, they're cut off. All the other times they're alone for hours on end, he doesn't say a word. The situation was silly enough to make you lose your involvement with the story. There are many other too-bizarre coincidences.
With so many people dropping dead left and right, the cops seem rather blithe about it all. The villagers seem to care more about themselves than about anyone who's gone. There's never any sense of *why* Meg's boyfriend is with his fiance, or *why* Meg's mom left her dad and chose this new guy. It's all contrived plot. There's an incredibly tiny amount of sleuthing that goes on, but most of it is chore running, and the occasional stumbling over clues. The ending scene in particular seems extremely kludgy.
I'm not saying I disliked the story - I read it through in a few hours, and there were numerous funny parts. It seems like it would have been *so* easy to structure it so that the constant "I'm about to tell her but some inane thing interrupts us" situations weren't happening - or that more depth was given to the characters so their actions rang true. Meg being such a shallow, spineless doormat was a continual frustration. It was a superb story crying to get out, but being bogged down by a lack of coherency. Even with the issues here, I'm actually really psyched to read the second book now. If this is what Donna Andrews did with her first try, I'm sure Puffins will solve many of these issues.
All That and a Bag of Chips.......2006-08-05
This was a really fun book to read. Not a 'serious' mystery, a more amiable one. I enjoyed it thoroughly and would recommend it to anyone wanting a captivating, yet light-hearted read.
For Anyone with a Crazy Family.......2006-07-15
For anyone with a crazy family - and that's just about everyone - Murder with Peacocks will make you laugh out loud. I was completely swept away by this breezy and fast-paced tale, which somehow manages to blend weddings, blacksmithing, and peacocks with flair. I also felt that Donna Andrews managed to capture the small-town atmosphere just about perfectly, while juggling her many plot threads. This was my first Meg Lanslow mystery, but it definitely won't be my last! (P.S. to anyone who thinks all these family antics are over the top: You clearly have never been to an Italian wedding....)

fast paced and sexy.......2007-08-21
I had fun visiting again with the hero and heroine from To Die For. The suspense is taut and the relationship between Blair and Wyatt is electric. I felt like Blair had grown since the last book, which she needed. I wouldn't mind another read about these two. Linda Howard writes excellent characterization and captivating suspense.
Funny and Clever.......2007-08-11
Now I know people either love or hate this book. I loved it. I love Blair. I wouldn't want to hang out with her in real life (which is often a gauge for me with a character) but I think she's a far more interesting and complicated romance heroine than we see very often.
Blair is shallow. Yep. She complains. Yep. But she fiercely loves the people in her life and she runs her own business and takes care of what's hers. I admire that. I admire how she manages Wyatt, a major alpha male if they ever existed! And I also love her ability, if only in her head, to admit her faults.
Wyatt is one of those heroes who works in the hands of only a very few authors. Most would emasculate him or turn him into a complete *ss. Howard can walk that line with great skill. Oh there were times when he fall to the *sshole side of the line, but his apolgies were genuine and believable.
I think first person works well with this couple. Wyatt is such a big character, you can see him through Blair's eyes and understand him as she does. And it softens Blair too. We don't need inside Wyatt's head to know how he feels about Blair, he's with her and he loves her. Anyway, loved it.
Boring!.......2007-05-29
Drop Dead Gorgeous, To Die For (Sequel) was a waste of money. (I have the two books in Hardcopy) Amazon has the books in paperback. It was written in First Person. I tried! I just couldn't get into the book. In Third Person, you get into other characters and feel what they're feeling. I have always liked LH books. And, if possibly I try to get my favorite Authors their books in HC. Unfortunately, these are not keepers. Try her older books if you haven't already. (After the Night the Bathroom scene was sooo funny) I think, After the Night was the best book LH Has Written!! Its only my opinion. You're the only one, who can decide. If you wish to read Drop Dead Gorgeous.
Loved it..........2007-05-22
Although I preferred the 1st book in this series (To Die For), I found myself loving this book as well. My only disappointment was that I figured out who the "bad-guy" was at the first available opportunity. I even guessed what their relationship was to Blair. With that being my only complain I loved this book. The first person is a huge plus to me. I didn't feel the need to go into Wyatt's head in either of these books & Although I found Blair to be very spoiled & annoying I enjoyed viewing the story through her eyes because she very witty, funny & sneaky. I highly recommend this 2-book series.
Not as good as the first book.......2007-05-01
As a sequel to "To Die For", this book was not as good. And it was no "Mr. Perfect" but still a fun read. To me this is another "if you can buy it used, do it" kind of book.

DEAD ON ARRIVAL
Suburban housewife Susan Henshaw dips into the middle-age blues after hearing the news that her little girl, Chrissy, is getting married. To bolster her spirits, Susan plans to produce the wedding to end all weddings.
Chrissy's college roommate, now a designer in Italy, agrees to create an original wedding dress. Then, on the day before the ceremony, the long-anticipated box arrives. Yet the contents are a bit unexpected. For instead of a delicate confection of lace and tulle, nestled inside is a strangled corpse. Is someone trying to ruin the season's biggest wedding?
Over Susan's dead body . . .
Customer Reviews:
A Total Disappointment.......2006-01-12
Normally I am a fan of the Susan Henshaw series, but this installment was just terrible. By the end I couldn't care less about the identity of the murder victim much less who killed her. The entire premise was so unbelievable. Most of the characters had two different names which kept me confused and the frantic pace that Susan ran around town for 24 hours left me so exhausted I couldn't wait for the book to just end. I would love to know what police chief would only smile upon learning of a dead body being hidden for a day or so in order to not ruin the wedding day for the bride! The fact that her friend Kathleen, a former police officer, agreed to go along with the plan only made it worse. By all means, skip this book.
Susan is Mother-of-the-Bride.......2002-10-15
Susan's Henshaw's daughter is getting married and, as usual, everything that could go wrong does. However, a missing wedding gown is nothing compared to the dead body which Susan has found. If you can swallow the premise that Susan wouldn't report the murder to the police because she doesn't want to spoil her daughter's wedding day, then you should enjoy this cozy. Acually this book is one of the better ones of the series and contains amusing characters and situations, along with plenty of red herrings and a satisfying conclusion.
Yuck!!!.......2002-09-02
I have enjoyed all of the Susan Henshaw mysteries and was very disappointed in this one. No self-respecting mother in the world would allow her daughter to abuse her this way. I was so annoyed with Chrissy's behavior, I didn't even finish the book! If this is the only one you have read, please, please try one of the other ones, they are much, much better!
Review of Weddings Are Murder.......2002-03-23
This is the 4th book I've read of the Susan Henshaw suburban housewife "sleuth" series and with each book I find myself shaking my head in disbelief; but this one, so far, takes the cake. What mother of the bride would be running the streets at two in the morning the night before her daughter gets married trying to track down a murderer, leaving dog "poop" and "pee" on the kitchen floor knowing she is to host a large brunch early the next morning. When the next morning comes she never sets foot in the kitchen to see if the mess is still there but goes off on another wild goose chase. She always uses her best friend Kathleen who was a police officer before she quit and got married as a errand and delivery person more than what she is, a trained professional. As a trained professional Kathleen should be solving the crime(s) and Susan should be assisting her, not the other way around. All the books I have read so far are just not believable but this one ...forget it, I can not recommend it, it seems more like a fantasy than a mystery.
A fun read!.......2001-12-05
I enjoyed this book. It was a light mystery with a lot of fun thrown in via the dissapearing body, the vanishing wedding dress and the other problems that arise from having a murder and a wedding.
The author did a good job of picturing the tense times of a wedding. All that was lacking was the normal night before the wedding fight between groom and bride.
I read the other reviews and I disagree in that I didn't find the main character, Susan, to be extremely self centered. Rather I found her to be a normal, flawed mother who was working hard to make the best wedding she could for her daughter. I thought her reaction to finding the dead body and her solutions to hiding the dead body funny.
The book was fun and enjoyable. It was a light mystery that didn't have a lot of gore. I will read others by this author.
