Book Description
With a new plug-in that re-creates the sounds of 11 of the world's best-known guitar amps, distributed audio processing (which lets you tap into a virtually unlimited number of Macs), new software instruments (including a killer drum machine), and a slew of workflow enhancements, it's no wonder you're chomping at the bit to start using Logic Pro 7 and its streamlined sibling Logic Express 7. This Apple-certified guide ensures that you do-effectively, efficiently, and in as little time as possible! Veteran audio producer Martin Sitter uses step-by-step, project-based instruction and straightforward, jargon-free prose to detail the countless creative options Logic affords for audio production. After showing you how to set up Logic and begin recording audio with it, Martin details editing sequences, mixing techniques, and using Logic's software synthesizers, sampler and digital signal processors to put the perfect aural polish on their audio creations. The accompanying CD includes all the lesson files and media you'll need to complete the book's lessons.

Best. Manual. Ever........2007-09-10
So many tutorials and manuals I read for software leave me confused so I just use them as a backup when there is something in particular that I'm trying to learn. Some may be like me where having a hands-on lesson sinks into the brain much faster.
This book is like taking a class. The lessons are installed on your computer, follow the book at your own speed and you're learning in just minutes. I've heard nothing but good things about this book, so I decided to get it. So glad I did.
Better Than The Rest.......2007-08-03
Logic and Logic Express at any given moment can seem very illogical to the user. This book, although written with the idea of (logically) exploring its features and use in a step-by-step manner using prepared lessons with pre-packaged audio and midi files, can also be used to learn the program by reference. That is to say, for example, that if you'd like to learn how to enter Midi, or edit it, you can find the chapters and functions regarding midi, use the example chapters/sections with your own files and learn how to use the program.
If you are already a "seasoned" DAW owner/user, other than to figure out where/how the very basic things you are doing in another program are located/implemented in Logic (transport controls, audio editing windows, import/export of files), you will be better off going straight to the second book in this series, Apple Pro Training Series: Advanced Logic Pro 7 (Apple Pro Training) by David Dvorin.
I use another DAW in addition to Logic/Logic Express. Logic Express' documentation severly lacks compared to that in Pro, and I would recommend this series of books for Express users in particular, but they are also valuable for those using Pro. One note, however: It is not generally clear in either of these books whether a given function (for example Groups functionality or the Marquis Tool or Aux functionality) is implemented and available in the Express version of the program and thus no workarounds are given for any 'missing' function, although workarounds generally exist.
Another nice feature of the books is their coverage of the 'plug-ins' that come with Logic and Express, most all of which are quality and useful to Logic and production in general. Especially for those who have not used a DAW before, and can find the use of software instruments, midi implementations and functional plug-ins such as reverb and compression a bit of a mystery. The chapters here will be of value.
There are other books written for learning and using Logic. But for me, this series was the best. I was able to find the information necessary to get me using the program quickly and efficiently (which is not to be taken lightly when it comes to using Logic, which is reknown for a steep learning curve) by example and reference more easily than with other books. Good indexes and clear examples are positives, not knowing whether something is implemented in Express is a negative, and some points just don't seem to be covered so its back to Apple's support forums to figure it out. But all things considered, best in breed in my opinion.
Your mileage may vary...

A manual you can use........2007-05-17
I was able to start using logic within minutes of flipping through this book. It is well written and laid out in a user friendly manner. I couldn't get anywhere with the manual, and I am use to reading technical babble. Get this book if you want to start using logic quickly, efficiently, and to its full potential.
Great tutorial - but written for those with experience .......2007-05-10
First let me say that this book (and it's partner Advanced Logic) are extremely useful and turn the "get to know the software" headaches into real pleasures. Having said that, this is obviously written by someone who is so familiar with the software that they take some things for granted that aren't obvious to the first-time user.
All in all though it is well worth the investment and comes with its own set of "songs" that walk one through the various features of the software in a well organized way.
very informative book.......2007-05-07
The manual is fabulous. Logic Express 7 is quite an undertaking to learn and this book is helping out a lot.

Good read ...BUT.......2007-04-11
Good illustrations but not that easy for a DVD STudio Pro 'Dummy'. I found that I had to go to the Apple DVD Studio Pro manual from the net to work out what to do. Then, after I had a basic understanding, and a few hours of fiddling on the computer, this book came to life for me and was very useful. Particularly the project workshops.
Not Worth the money, but still pretty good.......2005-12-08
I've been in a fight w/ Apple and Peachpit over this 'new' version of DVDSP4.
I'm an Apple cert. instructor for this and other ProApps. When I started reading the new book I found the same mistakes from version 3 had been copied over to version 4.
Granted, the new compressor app is great but nowhere does it explain the new features of DVDSP4 like support for external video, VTS editing and the whole HD support. I was told by Apple and Peachpit that this version of the book was intended to be an 'revision' of the old book; however, the general advertising of this book says 'Fully Update' instead of 'Fully Revised'... a bit misleading to the people who thought this version would help instruct students on how to best use the new features. We'll have to wait.

Pet Sitting Guide.......2007-01-09
I thought this book was just average. It is very over priced for what the book actually has to offer.
very informative.......2006-11-04
this book is very informative. it's a must-have for new enterperneurs interested in this field. i highly recommend it.
An excellent resource.......2005-08-29
When I first started thinking about starting my business in the early-mid 90's I picked up this book and devoured it. Then, it sat on my shelf as I pursued my 'corporate ladder' and took care of pets part-time.
When I decided to open my business full-time I again referred to the book. It really kept me inspired and ready to move forward. However, I did find that many of the suggestions were somewhat outdated -- using paper to track clients and schedules was never part of my plan -- but the basics of what they recommend you track/keep were great -- and I adapted the info to my on-line database. Since then, I've switched to a third-party service for an on-line database for client info, but the info I learned from the Mangolds' book was great.
I did read this book before Patti Moran's and tend to refer to it as the original 'bible' in my mind. But both books cover the same territory and give you a good overview of wht to expect. Petsitters are generally GREAT with pets and like the idea of spending time with them, but often have a hard time with the business side...this book is a great guide and reminder that you are in it to make money.;
As my business grew (http://www.peggiespets.com), I started helping other pet-sitters start or enhance their own businesses, ([...]) and this is a book that I include on my reading list for clients.
It's a good book that should be part of your learning library to continue to provide outstanding service to pets and their people!

MY SUCCESS STORY.......2005-08-12
When I took early retirement after 25 years in the Banking industry and began a career in pet sitting, I found a treasure in "The Professional Pet Sitter." It is a gem not only in the useful information it contains, but also in the caring philosophy conveyed by its authors, Lori and Scott Mangold. Whether you are considering pet sitting as a full-time or part-time venture, this book is valuable. With time being a precious commodity in today's fast-paced world, I found that "The Professional Pet Sitter" provided clear-cut, easy-to-locate details on how to establish a successful service. As a further boon to launching a pet sitting career quickly and effectively, all appropriate business forms are included in the book. Thanks to the Mangolds' encouragement and expertise embodied in "The Professional Pet Sitter," my business is now in its sixth year and flourishing.
The Professional Pet Sitter.......2005-07-06
This is a wonderful book for anyone starting out in the business or for those who are already actively involved. It is full of useful information and can be used as a reference manual in multiple areas when business questions arise. I would highly recommend it!

Not as Promised.......2007-04-23
Bought the book based on the information that a web page was available for up to date information, links, planning information etc., etc., etc. No of this is available. All the website has is a slight discription of the book. NO OTHER INFORMATION.
Ok as a Resource.......2007-01-24
I think this book is a good place to begin, but is basically a listing of lodings that accept pets. I would prefer to see fewer listings, but places where dogs are WELCOMED, not just allowed. I just began traveling with my dog and I plan my destination on pet friendliness, rather than choose a destination and look for ok hotels. Plus, I need to know the dog-friendly activities and tourist attractions. I'm glad I bought this book because it helps begin my research, but I still am looking for more.
My Only Travel Book!.......2006-05-28
My dog comes with me everywhere--all vacations, road trips etc...This book has been a life-saver, I can't imagine traveling without it! It not only gives a very thorough list of dog friendly accomodations, but it also lists dog friendly activities--though honestly, it's mostly about accomodations.
The information is generally accurate, but do call ahead because sometimes facilities change ownership etc...But usually, it's right on.
Thorough, with a huge amount of listings in large and small towns. Highly recommend if you travel with your pets!
Not such a headache any more!.......2006-03-11
This book has been very helpful with our cross country jounts. I would make a suggestion though. Not all businesses stay open or carry the same inventory. Before I drive to a place out of the way or a special trip, I call in advance to see if they are open. For the hotels/motels I make sure the rules have not changed and the prices are reasonable. This book has saved me a lot to time and trouble.
A Great Bargain for Pet Travel.......2005-04-03
I travel with my dogs for a living (I work in pet supplies) and I've been using this series of books since the late 1980s. You need to buy the current edition, because things do change, but, for $15 or less, you can always have it in your luggage ready to go. I love it.

Smaller Size Detracts.......2007-08-16
My almost 2-year old daughter loves the Carl books. I don't really like these smaller board books as much as the large hardcover books that we have, but she doesn't seem to mind the difference and carries the board books around with her.
Carl Goes Shopping.......2007-01-09
Great book. My three-year-olds have loved it for at least a year, especially enjoying that the store has an elevator and pet and toy sections as well. Seems to appeal to a wide developmental range.
my son loves this book.......2006-11-10
Alexandra Day's illustrations transport us into a beautiful world of childhood. My two and a half year old loves all the Carl books. The trouble Carl and the baby get into in the store in this one makes him laugh hysterically.
Strange books.......2006-10-27
My daughter likes the pictures, but the storyline is wierd. I just don't like a story about a mother that leaves her infant alone in public in the care of her dog. I also don't like images of a baby riding on the dog's back (and even standing on, in one of the other books), I certainly wouldn't want my child to think she could try that with our Rottie. I know it is a kid's book, and supposed to be cute, but I just don't like the Carl books, and I don't think they send a good message about proper child care at all.
My son's favorite Carl book.......2006-07-19
I just pulled our collection of board books out of the attic to clean up for my youngest child. "Carl Goes Shopping" was obviously my son's favorite of his four "Carl" books - it was bent, chewed, food splattered, and basically loved to tatters. I intrepret this condition as a strong recommendation from a toddler. I decided to just throw it out and buy a new copy for my daughter!

Gene Zion's plant sitter still retains the excitment it held many years ago. Students are dazzled with the illustrations and more importantly the adventures of the plant sitter. The book makes a great read aloud, and a super introduction to an elementary unit on plant study!

kristy thomas, idea machine.......2007-02-26
kristy comes up with an idea to form a babysitters club. dealing with strict parents, odd secrets, new families and more isn't easy. but shy, timid mary anne, bossy, tomboy kristy, artistic, creative claudia and fashionable, cool stacey are friends for ever!
4 stars for the book and the series.......2007-01-13
I've been reading ths series for awhile now, and while I don't think these books are exactly classics, I think they are a nice, light read and are just nice for relaxing.
What some people have got to remember are that these books are for KIDS. That is why there is no drugs, sex, or suicide or anything. Well, Ann touched up on those problems in a few, but she made it perfectly clear that that is WRONG.
And while the fact that Mallory and Jessi baby-sit for nine- and ten-year-olds is unrealistic (among other things), the books are just good. They're often funny and the little kids' ("charges") antics remind me of when I was younger (I'm actually 16 but don't have an e-mail address). Some of the books are dumb, like Dawn and the School Spirit War, but some are incredible, like Mary Anne Saves the Day and the third one (sorry, I forgot the title).
The book itself? Well, Kristy's Great Idea was not my favorite BSC book, but it was decent. It had a lot going on and was interesting; a real page-turner. You get to meet the three original members. However, something bugs me about it; I can't quite figure out what it is. I think it's just the writing style; it seems a smidge different from the other books. You'll have to read it yourself to see what I mean.
Overall, nice series for kids, decent book.
Great!.......2006-12-10
I have every baby-sitters book and i'm not exageratting! These books are great, they teach you life lessons as well as little lessons! even though they are for 8-10 yr. olds im 12 and i read them often. they remind me of home because im an exchange student from the USA and im in mexico. you definetly should read them. ADIOS AMIGOS ME GUSTA MUCHO BSC LIBROS! :]
cool.......2006-11-14
I like babysitting but so far i only sit for my sister emily. But its fun. I think Kristy's idea to start the BSC was AWESOME!!!! really. I have read a LOT of the BSC books. This book is the one you should read if you've just gotten into the BSC books. At least, read this one first.
people please!.......2006-08-02
i agree that these books dont talk about the issues that we go through these days as teenagers but these books were made for younger kids! and who would want to read about sex and all i mean come on! there are more important things like: frienships, parents, school and boys that are just as interesting as drugs and all. so yeah sometimes they can be immmature but so can we! im sure everyone has there immature moments right? and i just wanted to say that this book is great! how claudia became close with maryanne and kristy again and along with stacey! these girls couldnt be more different yet they compliment each other perfectly! the weird thing is i dont relate to kristy i am more like stacey and dawn but this book is a good one. a great one nonetheless!
Book Description
Dixie Hemingway knows first-hand that many things in life are worse than a dirty litter box. Once happy as a Florida sheriff’s deputy, she lost everything when senseless tragedy shattered her world. Now Dixie laces up her sneakers, grabs some kitty treats, and copes with one day at a time as a pet-sitter. Her investigations deal strictly with “crimes” such as who peed on the bed . . . until she finds a dead man face down in an Abyssinian’s water bowl. With the local cops stymied—including a handsome detective who catches her eye—she decides to clip a leash on a lead or two and go sleuthing herself. Dixie soon finds out that the Abyssinian’s pretty owner has vanished and left behind a shocking past, a lonely cat, and a chilling reason for Dixie to start running when she’s out walking the dogs.

boredom killed the reader.......2007-08-10
There is an excellent plot in this book. However, the descriptions of the day to day running of a pet-sitting firm are endless and better suited to a guide to starting your own business(half a page devoted to how she logs entries of the daily activities of each pet) or a how-to book for pet care (another half page describing how to brush a cat).
Some of Dixie's actions also make no sense. She walks into a client's house and finds that the bedroom has been tossed. She decides to feed the cat before calling 911. Anyone who's ever had the police respond to a burglar alarm knows the drill - get to a safe place because the intruders may still be in the house. But this veteran ex-cop takes the cat into the kitchen for breakfast. These incongruities pile up and become very irritating.
Dixie is a likeable character and the assorted pets are loveable. Again, the underlying plot is interesting. However, better editing is needed.
Throughly enjoyed this book.......2007-06-12
I have to say that for this to be the first book by this author, I truly enjoyed it. The main character, Dixie Hemingway, is very believable because she is experiencing many of the same issues that people face daily and yet know that life has to move forward, be it ever so slowly. The author provides enough information so that you can understand Dixie and her behavior and keeps the story moving at a pace that makes you never want to put the book down. The element of surprise in this book is great too. I was totally surprised by who the villian turned out to be. A great read! I suggest it to anyone that likes "cozies".
Enjoy!!!
Buy it if you own or love a cat!.......2007-05-21
Other reviewers covered Blaize Clement's main character and plot quite nicely, so I won't in my review. I want to suggest Curiousity Killed the Cat Sitter because of the extraordinary insight that Blaize's main character, Dixie, displays towards animals, specifically cats.
I've lived with cats for most of my 50 years and never quite "got them" like Dixie does! The portrayal of their moods and thoughts seems to be uncanningly accurate and adds tremendously to the story.
Authors struggle to develop characters as well as Blaize develops the cats throughout this story!
Oh, and the story and plot make for a great read even if you wouldn't give a hairball for cats!
Enjoy!
A good start for a new writer!.......2007-04-12
Kudos to Clement for choosing as her crime something fairly controversial. A first time writer, Clement selected a hate crime to revolve her story around.
The story introduces widow Dixie Hemingway who is somehow able to sustain a living as a pet sitter. Dixie is a woman who definately does better with animals than humans, but as a former deputy sheriff, she feels compelled to solve the mystery surrounding the death of one of her clients.
Clement avoids quirky characters and instead surrounds Dixie with walking wounded. We meet a sensitive pianist who's bound for Juilliard and has a secret he must keep from his parents and one of her confidents is a waitress who has rarely seen a kind side of a man.
She also avoids the trap of setting up a romance for her wounded widow character - we're introduced to a handful of possibilities, but nothing is certain. Dixie tells the reader repeatedly that she's not too sure about a new relationship having lost both her husband and daughter just a few years ago. However, she responds to a couple of men who may end up being the new one in her life.
My only real complaint is minor: we spend way too much time learning how Dixie is a wiz at interpreting animal behavior. By the end of the novel, the reader is almost a pro at knowing what all the different meows are that a cat can make...and what breed of cats are friendly and what ones are stand-offish. It's obvious that Clement did her homework - something that I rarely find in a first time novelist - and she does offer some restraint, it's just it makes some scenes a little long when we learn all the different ways a cat likes to be brushed.
Good first in a series.......2007-04-02
Ms Clement uses a believable premise, humor and serious life situations to weave an intriguing tangle for her readers to work through. Her plot complications are enough to keep you interested without being frustrating--you want to hurry through it, not yell at the author to get to the point--and the Florida setting is very appealing.

Berenstein's Sitter.......2006-04-25
The book, The Berenstein Bears and the sitter, is wonderful. In the book, the cubs are very scared because a babysitter is coming to stay with them. However, once she gets there, the cubs find out that she is actually very nice and fun. They end up having a great time with her. I thought this book was very colorful and interesting. I love all of the Berenstein Bears books. Many times children are afraid of babysitters, but this book shows them there is no need to be. I would recommend this book to all children.

If Only All Kids Were this Easy!.......2001-03-13
Mama and Papa Bear have to go to an emergency town meeting, along with the rest of the Bear family. Who will watch Brother and Sister Bear? They end up finding Mrs. Grizzly who lives in the old stump at the end of the street. But isn't Mrs. Grizzly a bit of a grump?
Lucky for her, the children are happily settled down with the odds and ends she's brought in her bag. Not only does this book prepare young (under 6?) children for a new sitter experience, but maybe it also will teach kids how to behave with grown-ups.
Mrs. Grizzly has a spunky personality that kids will warm up to and parents will enjoy reading aloud. The bright, colorful pictures are fun for kids.
Customer Reviews:
Great.......2007-03-14
I loved this book. I don't think it is the kids that are impossible though. Their mom is. She is as disorganized as Dawn's mom. But Sharon spends more time with her kids.
Anyway, this was a very good book even though it was a little scary when Buddy got kidnapped by his dad. It turned out fine. I will read Babysitter Club books til i die.
Dawn and the Impossible Three.......2006-02-05
Make that the Impossible Four. The Barrett kids are a lot to handle, but they're out of control because their mother doesn't TAKE control, making Mrs. Barrett the most impossible of all.
This is Dawn's first book. She finds herself trying to make nice with Kristy, who's unhappy with the idea of moving across town when her mother gets remarried. Dawn understands and works hard to overcome Kristy's jealousy over Mary Anne and Dawn's new friendship. That's part of the reason she takes on the Barretts as new clients. She never expected them to become the challenge they turn out to be. How things work out - and they always do - is something you'll have to read the book to find out!
References to Morbidda Destiny, who stars in Karen's first Baby-Sitters Little Sister book, are a nice way to tie the two series together. I only hope I can someday catch up with Martin's prolific pen.
WRONG TITLE!!.......2005-04-25
Don't judge a book by it's cover - or it's title! The title "DAWN AND THE IMPOSSIBLE THREE" gives you an idea tht the Barrett kids are a real problem, but don't be fooled! The book should be called "DAWN AND IMPOSSIBLE MRS. BARRETT". She never gives Dawn baby-sitting instructions, leaves the wrong phone numbers and leaves the house a wreck, making Dawn feel that it's her responsibility to clean up! Her disorganization leaves Dawn in a mess when Buddy Barrett is kidnapped by his father. (He is returned in the end.) I am happy, though, that Dawn got everything straightened out in the end with Impossible Mrs. Barrett!
Great!.......2005-04-18
When Dawn baby sits for the Baretts', Dawn thinks baby sitting there is easy. First, The Barett House was dirty so they had to clean it. Second, Kristy hates Dawn of being a BSC Member. Kristy is jealous of Dawn because Mary Anne spends more time with her old friend, Kristy than her new friend, Dawn.
