5 out of 5 stars A world of inspiration.......2003-04-29

It's the kind of book that I reach for when I am having 'one of those days'. It's small, simple and yet so rich in what it has to offer. The words of wisdom accompanied by the wonderfully calming photos of beach scenes relax my mind and give me cause to stop and reflect on what really matters in this world. We all need more times like this. If you can't get away to the beach, you can at least pick up this book and transport your mind and soul there.

5 out of 5 stars A Beautiful Book.......2003-04-23

      5 out of 5 stars love it.......2007-08-20

i read the book and loved the vibe, i just felt like everything in it suited the type of person i am. i think that is important when you are trying to incorporate a new habit into your life. i've never seen myself as sporty and i hate to think of myself as a dieter, this book helps me see my efforts to stay in shape and eat well in a different light, one that reflects more of who i feel i am.

so i was excited to try it, and now, i'm nearly ten days in and i LOVE it. i see the results in my body and the way my clothes fit, although not so much on the scale, yet. i think i lost one or two lbs. but the main thing is that it's finally something that i feel i can easily keep doing, because i like it and it makes me feel great!
most of the recipes are fantastic, i haven't felt at all like i'm dieting - except that the breakfasts are generally really light, and i get hungry in the morning.

anyway, i just wanted to say i highly recommend it, especially for anyone who is already into yoga, meditation, and natural food.

      5 out of 5 stars Good job!.......2007-07-12

The authors have done a good job of integrating mind/body into a holistic approach to health. Recipes are excellent, food is delicious and workouts are hard! Not for the faint of heart. This regimine will require 100% effort to succeed, particularly if you work full time and have a family. Each morning you are required to write in a journal, meditate and do 15 minutes of yoga. In addition each day requires a 30 - 60 minute walk, a 40 minute strength routine, and on alternate days an additional "core" workout for the abs. Plan on spending about 2 hours a day on just these parts. In addition, there is a lot of prep. time in the kitchen. All food is very close to it's natural state and is loaded with veggies, fresh marinades, and sald dressings. Each of these is made from scratch and requires a lot of time. Still, it is an excellent program and I don't see how they could have done it any easier. I suggest buying the fresh ginger and garlic, chopped in jars (as they suggest) and vegetables already chopped etc. to make it easier. Expect your kitchen to be full of dishes constantly if you follow their eating plan closely.

4 out of 5 stars Love the book.......2007-05-30

This book is well written and takes a well rounded approach to health and fitness, which is refreshing. However, it is difficult to follow the program if you have an already busy schedual. I would still recomend this book to any person who wants address all the issues involved in losing weight (mind, body, soul).

5 out of 5 stars Fitness, spa style.......2007-05-26

The name of the book makes it sound like just another tone up for bikini exercise regimine, but actually it is a wholistic approach including: a food plan with recipes, circuit routines, yoga moves, meditations, journaling prompts, and spa treatments for body, face, etc. The spa treatments are made of grocery items. The flavors for the food are mostly Mexican or Asian inspired, using a back-to-basics approach of all natural food. I'm really enjoying the book and seeing results after just a week into it (so far).

2 out of 5 stars Workouts for the free weight phobic.......2007-08-08

If someone has never been in a free weight training room before, or believes that free weights will lead to unseemly "bulking" this is a nice introduction to free weight training.

However, if a potential reader is seeking a progressive, high impact program this isn't it.

James Villepique has authored or co-authored a number of other work-out books which are much better for those who enjoy fitness.

If you do enjoy working out, or just enjoy the results, don't waste your money on this book.

2 out of 5 stars not useful for experienced exerciser.......2006-03-31

the only people that may find this book useful have either never exercised or are very thin with little muscle tone. I did not find it useful because i have been lifting weights for a few years. The most disappointing thing about the book is that several models used appear to be underweight with no muscletone and are absolutely terrible role models for a HEALTHY female physique.they don't look fit-they look like they don't eat.

5 out of 5 stars Beach ready in 8 weeks.......2005-03-29

What a great book! I started the program the beginning of March and am seeing results already. I can't wait to put on a tank top this summer. Easy to read, exercises were easy to follow, and the pictures illustrate how to maintain good form. Well done!

5 out of 5 stars Great Total Body Makeover.......2004-05-14

While many of us don't have time to go to the gym, it's great that this workout plan is available!

You can do the exercises at home using light weights and a step. These are inexpensive and you can get them at a local sporting goods store.

The workouts are easy to follow and hit every body part. Nothing is left out. They are challenging but can done by a beginner.

I look ahead to my new body and look this summer...

2 out of 5 stars Good for beginners... disappointing for experienced.......2004-04-19

Gives basic overview of exercises with mini-weights that probably won't get you the beach body you want.

There are better, more realistic books out there (ie: Body-for-LIFE, Sculpting Her Body Perfect). If you're the type who reads Shape magazine, you may like it. If you're a Muscle & Fitness Hers or FitnessRX reader, you will think it's lame.

4 out of 5 stars a lovely and fun book.......2005-08-09

This book isn't going to change your life.. but it really is a nice, light, fun book. It's a nice book for families or anyone heading for the beach. I bought it as a fun summer read and added it to my special bookshelf for decoration.

5 out of 5 stars The Perfect Beach Read.......2003-09-10

The Hubals' book could easily be subtitled "How to Get the Most Pleasure, Joy, Growth, and Unadulterated Fun Out of Your Beach Vacation." It is really three books in one: 1) a guide to making any beach vacation the vacation of a lifetime, 2) an entry-level self-help book that focuses on fun, and 3) a collection of funny, fascinating, sometimes useful, and sometimes wonderfully bizarre beach trivia. Buy it and read it (it takes perhaps an hour) twice a year: once when planning your beach vacation, and again when you first arrive at the beach and kick off your shoes. At worst, this book will make for a better vacation; at best, it will change your life.

5 out of 5 stars Week at the beach?? or a week anywhere?.......2003-09-02

First, I am fiftyish and intend to retire in northern Minnesota where summer is short and winter is deep and long. Still the message here is applicable to that environment. Beaches have the reputation for soulful activities outlined in this book, but the lessons can be applied anywhere you feel comfortable with the nature around you. I found the trivia informative and the thought behind the activities to be provoking. I highly recommend it.

1 out of 5 stars You Must Be Kidding.......2003-07-23

I, too, live by the beach and appreciate the fun and beauty and solace it offers beyond measure. And while I'm sure that the Hubals are wonderful people, this book is unbelievably trite and oozes with over-the-top sentimentality. For example, #88 titled Cry or #93, "Make a wish and write in the sand with a feather." Entries also lean to the bizzare: #87 "Let a child take pictures of you"--the Hubals suggest "borrowing a child from a friendly family" if you don't have a child of your own. And #83--I agree watching dogs play at the beach is entertaining, but the mention that your dog will be delighted that there are "dead things to smell"is just too too much. And #79: "Give some money away" never even mentions the beach or the ocean--were editors sleeping during this tangent? For those of you who are Saturday Night Live fans, this book puts "Deep Thoughts" to shame. Unless you're looking for a good laugh or enjoy the sappiest of sappy books, pass this one up.

      5 out of 5 stars Enchanting!.......2003-04-29

In "A Week at the Beach", the Hubals have captured the essence of the sun and sea. Some of the suggested activities took me back to childhood experiences -- things I did in youthful innocence and had long since forgotten. Bits of wisdom, obscure facts, silly puns and occasional challenges are nestled between the mix of fun and inspirational activities. (Do you know the history of the bikini or why the Peruvians call the warm Pacific current El Nino?) Inspiring and well-written, this book will be a permanent part of our beach trips as I look forward to re-creating some of those childhood memories!!

      Book Description

As one of the most popular vacation spots in the world, the Grand Strand sparkles with life and activity. Yet beneath the sparkle, there are cryptic shadows-a chair that rocks by itself, perhaps moved by the spirit of a young man who took his own life after his love spurned him; a flickering light in the window of an abandoned house, a beacon to guide home a captain lost at sea before the Civil War; a monument cursed by an old woman accused of witchcraft. Ghost hunters consider the area from Murrells Inlet to Georgetown one of the most haunted regions on the East Coast. Blanche W. Floyd has collected the tales that intrigue and frighten locals and tourists alike. From the well-known Murrells Inlet apparition, Alice of the Hermitage, to the ghosts that frequent Old Gunn Church, the Grand Strand teems with legends of pirate treasure and lost Indians, of fierce battles and killer storms, and spirits unwilling or unable to leave the Grand Strand.

      Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Not much boo for buck here........2003-07-30

Blanche W. Floyd obviously loves the Grand Strand and she is most certainly well versed in its folklore. She also has a pleasing writing style and if you are looking for a book of the legends that have built up in that area of South Carolina this will definitely be a book you will want to read.

On the other hand, the title makes this book appear to be a collection of ghost stories and if that is what you are looking for, stay away. There are only three stories that really deal with purported hauntings out of a total of twenty-nine. Of those three, two of them are about Alice of the Hermitage and the Gray Man, well-worn stories that are in almost every book dealing with southern ghosts. Most of her stories brush off the whole possible ghostly aspect of the legend with a sentence like, "It is easy to imagine, when the fog rolls in and the tall grasses wave in the breeze how one could see..." Even most of the legends are less than notable. For example, we get the legend of Drunken Jack, which is an interesting story, the first fifty or so times that you hear it. But anyone who has ever visited this area has heard this story at least a hundred times and has no need to spend their hard-earned money to hear it yet again. Worse yet, the old joke about the drunk in the graveyard gets included in this book as a Grand Strand legend.

I think the real problem with this book is that the author doesn't believe in or even have an open mind about ghosts. There was no going out and interviewing people who would tell her about the time that they saw a strange light here, there, or yonder. This book is just a simple retelling of old legends that Mrs. Floyd has probably heard all of her life.

In all fairness, if you have never been to South Carolina or the Grand Strand, this book might just be of help in giving you a feel for the place. If you want good, creepy, and scary ghost stories however, look elsewhere.

      Book Description

The story behind America's iconic patch of sand-Muscle Beach, California.Almost half a century before health clubs, fitness videos, and weight training became American obsessions, a pioneering enclave in Santa Monica, California, started the physical culture boom. In the 1940s, Jack LaLanne, Vic Tanny, Joe Gold, Les and Pudgy Stockton, and others like them drew thousands of visitors to the beach to watch their feats of strength and acrobatic displays. More and more viewers became participants, and these pursuits, originally on the fringe, came fully into the cultural mainstream. Muscle Beach is full of rich, new material about the original Muscle Beachers-many of whom are still alive and testaments to the benefits of a life devoted to fitness. With its fresh anecdotes and thirty-two rare and wonderful photographs, this history brings this legendary stretch of beach into clear focus.

5 out of 5 stars Fitness America: The Colorful History of Muscle Beach.......2007-10-02

This is one of the several books available about the history of Muscle Beach that paved the way for fitness, aerobics, weight lifting, and body building. The athletes who made it possible, especially the ladies of Muscle beach, are the real stars. Women of modern generation must be highly indebted to them for popularizing a sport that was considered freakish and outright unfeminine. These women worked in 1930s and 40s when the land was highly conservative, and Santa Monica was no different. Strong pressure from local government through legislations, and public opinions through media were always unfriendly to women of Muscle beach. Muscle beach started around 1934, although few claim the foundation were laid as early as early 1920s. In its heyday, Muscle beach was made of men, women, and children who were learning and performing athletic feats, and acrobatic stunts to delight beachgoers. Some of these performers emerged as top class athletes, stuntman, bodybuilders, gymnasts, fitness consultants, and entrepreneurs. It is a long list of names that includes; Abbye "Pudgy" Stockton, Les Stockton, Jack Lalanne, Vic and Armand Tanny, Ran Hall, Frank Jares, Steve Reeves, George Eiferman, and so on. Many of them in later years became gym owners, trainers, authors and consultants.

Women performing stunts include; Pudgy Stockton lifting a man with one hand or support him on her shoulders; Pudgy or Relna Brewer would tear a book in half, and Relna would wrestle men and toss him like a rag doll. Women were considered equals by men on the platform. In the early 1940s WWII sent many men away to the warfront, this left women to join the workforce, and fill the void left by men at Muscle beach. Pudgy Stockton was a very powerful role model for women because she was not only muscular, and athletic, but also beautiful and feminine as a woman could be. When she died on June 26, 2006 at the age of 88 due to Alzheimer's disease; Boston Globe ran in its obituary column under the title "Queen of Muscle Beach." She was also called ``the First Lady of Iron," and ``America's Barbelle," in her time.

Many Hollywood stars hung out near Muscle beach. The list includes; Jane Russell who met her husband, Bob Waterfield, and Jayne Mansfield met her husband, Mickey Hargitay, a bodybuilder. Mae West known for her interest in men with good physique invited; Chuck Krauser, George Eiferman, Mickey Hargitay and Joe Gold for her live stage revue. Chuck Krauser and Mae West remained as couples until her death in 1980.

The athletes of Muscle beach were called "wackos, fruitcakes, hippies, and bums." The fall of Muscle beach started from 1952 - 1953 when the platform was taken over by the iron sports; weight lifting and bodybuilding, and the traditional acrobatic acts of Muscle beach was on its way out. Winning a competition was the main strategy of many iron sportsmen made them less social than acrobats. A combination of events that followed in late 50s may have closed the doors on the Muscle beach of Santa Monica. The events includes; car parking problems faced by the locals due to visitors to the beach; suggestive seminude poses, and physical touching of all male bodybuilders; Joe Weider's controversial publications that were aimed at gays; and a sex case involving a group of weight lifters and underage black girls sensationalized Santa Monica beach. In later years, Muscle beach reappeared at Venice beach, just south of the Pier, but it lacks the magic of "historical" Muscle beach of Santa Monica.

The athletes of Muscle beach have endured a great deal; it was a time when doctors told patients that muscle is bad; women may lose child bearing capability, and men may become impotent. In spite of all odds, they pursued their interests, and prevailed. They did not use steroids, and many were philosophical about life. George Eiferman printed his business card bearing his mind over body philosophy; a list of ten daily exercises, and one of them was; "We are never alone. Walk with God."

The author tells the story wonderfully and I did not find anything in this book that is either bigoted or unfair to any section of the society. I recommend this book to all fans of Muscle beach.

1 out of 5 stars Homophobic Garbage by a Bigoted Author.......2006-05-13

It is amazing the extent this author went to in trying to portray the early male bodybuilding champions as "normal" heterosexuals, while excluding the "fringe" elements of homosexuals. This book should be viewed as one bigot's attempt to rewrite the facts of history to fit her own purposes and bigoted viewpoint. Don't waste your money!

5 out of 5 stars The *rest* of the story..........2006-01-14

My dear father is now 86-years-old and his memory has grown weaker with age. I try to visit him frequently as I know his time on this earth is drawing to a close. One night, he started talking about his memories of his family home at 213 14th Street in Santa Monica. He told me that he and his twin brother Ed Fuller would go down to the Santa Monica Beach and hang out.

My father was a very handsome man in his youth and very strong. He and Ed began working out on the beach and one day, the Lifeguard down at the beach referred to them as "The Muscle Twins."

Before long, more men and women started joining their little mini-fitness craze and lifting weights on the beach. Sometimes, their antics would draw quite a crowd. My father and his brother would get very competitive and see who could lift the most weight.

As my father told this story, I grabbed a pen and started making notes. He mentioned several names, including "Pudge Stockton" and more. I scribbled away as he talked. I had my doubts. After all, my 86-year-old father was telling me that he and his brother Ed started the phenomenon known as "Muscle Beach"?

As a surprise, I ordered a couple books for my father (including this one) and when it arrived, I found the same names my father had mentioned.

My father's joy at receiving this tome was beyond words.

It did everything for him that I had hoped it could and would do, mainly bring back many joyous memories.

      5 out of 5 stars Fun Reading.......2004-04-21

Living at the beach in Los Angeles, I have a great interest and love of the culture which continues to intrigue and influence the rest of the world. Today's current focus on health and body building largely stems from the Muscle Beach phenomenon. This book puts that lifestyle into historical context in an enlightening and entertaining fashion.

      5 out of 5 stars Terrific Read!.......2004-04-02

Marla Matzer Rose's highly readable book beautifully captures the 'slice of life' that was Muscle Beach in its infancy. Especially delightful are the photographs from that period, which wonderfully capture the flavor of the time. Well researched, well written. An excellent read for history and fitness buffs, or for anyone curious about the glorious days of early Los Angeles. I thoroughly enjoyed it!!!
