5 out of 5 stars A book for the ages.......2007-06-12

I love almost any book done by Ruth Heller. Her illustrations are dynamically colorful and enchanting, and her real magic is that she only wrote and illustrated non-fiction books. I bought this book because as a librarian for a School of Education it was a book, and part of a set, I wanted all future teachers to know about. Now as a new grandmother, it is an important part of the library collection I want to share with my grandchildren. Because it is written in lovely verse, and is colorful, the books is wonderful for even the very young children. Because of the complete coverage of prepositions, far beyond the intricacies of grammar that I usually remember, it can be used with high-school students. It should not be eliminated from use in the high school classroom because it is a picture book. Even adults enjoy beautiful, colorful pictures and high school students will be just as intrigued. They can also learn all there is to know about prepositions.

As a soon to be teacher, I am a member of a Children's Book of the Month Club and this book, along with the book on pronouns, was sent to me by mistake. I have never heard of these books before. I thought they were wonderful. They even taught me about prepositions. I am going to collect all the books in the series because I think this is a great tool to have in the classroom. I don't have any children yet, but I know this is also a great book to have at home. Thank you Ruth Heller for coming up with these great books.

5 out of 5 stars From a Teacher's Point of view.......2000-02-18

Ruth Heller's book, Behind the Mask offers teachers a way to review one of the basic parts of speech, pronouns, with middle schoolers in a way that is painless and often amusing. Students who don't like to study grammar will often refer to parts of her delightful poems in answer to questions. She addresses more than one type of pronoun: for example the two and three word pronouns. She also addresses the problems of confusing pronouns used at the end of sentences with adverbs. All in all, her books are delightful for upper as well as lower grade students to read. If you teach grammar, this is one of the must have books for your classroom!

5 out of 5 stars A Disjointed and Fun Introduction to a Rock & Roll Phenomenon.......2007-09-03

Despite being a KISS fan since my high school years, this was my first book on the subject. The last time I saw KISS anywhere was Anaheim (I think - it's been almost 30 years) and then they were, without a doubt, kings of the rock world. It would have been impossible to believe that a scant two years later the group would be breaking up, struggling to find it's identity, seeking to reinvent itself in a world that would see the rise of punk rock, grunge and 80's hair bands.

The interesting thing about this book is the way it jumps around. The first third of the book was a bio written by David Leaf around 1979, then shelved and only recently rediscovered. The second third is during their break-up phase in the 80's and the last third is an album-by-album discography. So in jumping from third-to-third, you get something of the shock the fans felt. In the first third, you have the members essentially saying that they're the hottest band in the world and will never break up. Then you turn the page and they're discussing why they broke up the very next year. The book is honest, discussing the reasons Peter was fired and Ace's struggles with alcohol, but it's still an outsider's book, written from the perspective of fans who only want to see their heroes as supermen - not human being struggling with success, relationships and even (gasp!) mid-life crisis.

To get all of that human drama, you have to read the definitive accounting of the rise of KISS, Gene Simmon's bio, Kiss and Make-up.

The one thing I take away from any KISS book is Gene Simmon's iron will to succeed. I'm convinced that he could've pick any three guys at random and they would've been an incredible success. Sure, Paul and him have stayed true to the band and been close friends for decades, but without Gene, Paul could easily have been another wanna-be on the glam rock circuit.

KISS is still a a juggernaut money machine and I'm glad to see the group starting to tour again, albeit in a limited fashion and to smaller venues than in their glory days. But, like the Beatles, they'll never completely go away and their legacy is their music, which will always be the anthems of my youth and generation.

4 out of 5 stars Good book.......2007-02-06

The book has three very specific chapters. The first one is covers the beginning up until 1979. The second part (in its narrative form) talks very briefly about the post-1979 period. The third part is an album-by-album, song-by-analysis by the band and a lot of people involved (producers, managers, engineers).

So, this book does not flow as a regular biography, but is unusual format makes it unique and very interesting to read.

5 out of 5 stars 5 Stars for KISS fans, and who cares what anyone else thinks?.......2007-02-02

You might have mixed feelings about the format of the book. On one hand, it makes it very easy to skip to a specific album, period or band member if that's how you want to get your information. Because it's broken up that way, it doesn't flow like a traditional biography. Every member of the band, as well as managers, producers, and celebrity fans each step up to offer a comment on specific topics. It will come as no surprise that the show is run by Gene and Paul, but Ace and Peter...no matter how many petty squabbles and stories of substance abuse are laid bare...contributed mightily to the zillions of bucks sitting in Gene and Paul's bank accounts. No disrespect intended to Vinnie Vincent, Mark St. John, Bruce Kulick, the late Eric Carr or Eric Singer, BUT...the heart and rock 'n' roll soul of KISS will always be Gene, Paul, Ace and Peter. Tommy Thayer has the right to wear Ace Frehley's Space Ace makeup onstage because Gene and Paul own the rights to it, but he'll never be more than Tommy Thayer wearing Ace's makeup. Maybe Thayer helped Ace re-learn HIS OWN LICKS in preparation for the "Psycho Circus" reunion tour (don't do drugs, kids), but who cares? The band members rightfully acknowledge "Alive!" and "Destroyer" and the two albums to own, and it's nice to hear Paul Stanley fess up to the fact that the last Kulick album, the grunge-wannabe "Carnival Of Souls," was "second-rate Soundgarden, Metallica, and Alice In Chains." Gene, on the other hand, apologizes to no one, because when you're adding up the numbers on your bank statement, it's easy to get distracted if you're apologizing. Once you make it through this entire book you will find yourself having a "Spinal Tap" moment...while KISS has had its ups and downs, no one can deny the band's enduring popularity. The fact that their maturity level never rose above the maturity level of stunted adolescence (at best) while they became multi-multi-millionaires just makes Rob Reiner's "mockumentary" all that more dead-on, between-the-eyes accurate. Favorite quote? Raspberries singer Eric Carmen witnessing Gene swallowing a paper cup of Scope mouthwash mixed with Kerosene prior to fire-breathing onstage and whining to his manager "If this is what I have to do to make it in rock and roll, I quit!" KISS didn't quit, and you wanted the best, and you GOT the best...KISS.

5 out of 5 stars Kiss ultimate book!.......2007-01-04

I got this book for my husband, who is a huge KISS fan, and he couldn't put it down.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for hardcore Kiss fans.......2006-08-31

I've been a huge Kiss fan since 1976. Like most fans, the original band line-up is my favorite. This is the best book about Kiss I have ever read, and I've read several. I like that it consists mainly of interviews and quotes from the band members, producers, studio musicians, management, and others very close to the band. Extremely in-depth with the people who were there at the time, a lot of facts--but you have to check who is saying it so you get the proper perspective. The first section of the book is an extensive interview from 1979, and it is very interesting to read, especially in hindsight. The third and final section is a comprehensive album-by-album track-by-track analysis, again by the band themselves, contributing song writers and musicians, producers, and engineers. In between, the second section gives a nice overview of the period between the break up (when Ace and Peter left) in the early 1980s through the reunion in 1996. I liked this book enough to re-read section 3 twice back-to-back. It's THAT good. I found the comments throughout the book from Peter Criss particularly compelling, because I didn't know he was so arrogant and had the biggest ego in the band (yes even more than Gene Simmons if that's possible)! Highly recommended book for Kiss fans.

I purchased a used hardcover copy here on Amazon at a very low price.

Book Description

Elizabeth I (1533-1603) impressed herself more vividly on the memory of the world than any other monarch in the history of England. She successfully established and maintained power while refusing to bow to the wishes of those who believed no woman was fit to occupy the English throne. This biography describes the opulent but cruel childhood that shaped the woman Elizabeth became and details her triumphant reign, as well as the unrelenting forces that opposed her. Exploring the answers to some of history's most persistent and intriguing questions, Jane Resh Thomas has created a compelling account of Elizabeth's life that shatters the myths surrounding her and allows readers an unprecedented view of the queen as a human being. Full-color insert, chronology, bibliography, index.

3 out of 5 stars Nothing New.......2007-06-13

This woman was the greatest monarch England ever had. Ever. The book, however was a bit disapointing. It is a bare-bones just-the-facts telling of a great women's life and didn't near do her justice. I wanted more.

If general facts and a fast read are all you want, this book is perfect. Just not for me.

5 out of 5 stars The least frumpy queen on record.......2004-07-08

Take a look at the cover of this book for just a moment. Just a single solitary moment. Maybe the last thing you want to do is read a young adult biography on England's greatest queen, and I can understand where you're coming from. But take a good long look at the image presented on the cover here. This portrait of Queen Elizabeth was fashioned in her time and is commonly referred to as The Rainbow Portrait. It is, to my mind, the most flattering painting ever made of the ruler and it hasn't been touched since she posed for it. When you first look at it, it seems pretty standard. There she is with the high forehead (considered attractive at the time), the bright curly red hair, and the ostentatious finery. In fact, let's take a closer look at that finery. If you look carefully you cannot help but notice that her gown is covered in ears and eyes. You heard me right. Honest to goodness ears and eyes are all over this thing! You don't notice it at first, but once you've seen it you can never forget it. Such is the case with Thomas's book itself. It may not look like much at first, but once you take even a glance at the text you immediately become transfixed by the lives of Elizabeth, her crazy family, suitors, and enemies.

Elizabeth was born the second child of the (in the words of the great comic Eddie Izzard) "big fat hairy king", Henry VIII. Fond of killing off his wives when they either displeased him or couldn't produce male heirs, Elizabeth was the daughter of the soon-to-be beheaded Anne Boleyn. Her life was touch and go from the start. One minute she was treated as a prized pet and the next she was sent to royal grounds far from court. What followed soon after was a series of deaths and accessions to the throne. When Henry VIII died he was followed by Elizabeth's little half-bro Edward VI. When Eddie died he was followed by the Lady Jane Grey (for nine days). After she was tossed out came Elizabeth's older half-sis Mary (Bloody Mary to you commoners). Finally, Mary kicked it and Elizabeth rose to the throne. She was only 25 or 26 at the time and extraordinarily canny in the choices she made. Refusing to marry (and thereby give up her ruling power) Elizabeth remained sexy and single. Over the course of her life she dealt with assassination attempts, the continual threat of Mary Queen of Scots, an invasion of England by the Spanish Armada, excommunication, and all sorts of fun stuff. The result? Elizabeth remains perhaps the best remembered Queen of them all, making her an excellent subject of bios and bio-pics.

I'm easily bored. If I pick up a children's book that won a Newbery Award pre-1950 to read, you'll probably find me curled up in a corner fast asleep in five minutes time. Non-fiction is therefore one of the banes of my existence and I heap large helpings of praise onto any author that can make a realistic subject even halfway interesting. Not being familiar with Jane Resh Thomas, I was understandably nervous when I confronted this tome of a book and its 16th century subject. To my vast relief, my fears were more than unfounded. Here is a history book that has plumbed every interesting tidbit, rumor, factoid, and story for the eager ears of the reader. Want to hear how Queen Elizabeth would expose her chest to foreign diplomats (to put them on edge, you see)? Read it here. Curious about her six foot tall rival who was a queen that disguised herself as a boy to gain English sanctuary? It's a great tale. None of this is to say that Thomas neglects actual informative facts about the Elizabethan era and its people. In fact, this kind of information is so plentiful that it fills each and every page without ever drawing undue attention to itself. I think I learned more about ancient court life within these pages than I could have hoped to anywhere else.

In addition to fabulous factual storytelling and a wonderful ear for narrative, tension, and intrigue, Thomas has filled the book with numerous paintings of the characters involved, even going so far as to include Elizabeth's life in portraits as a color filled section of seven portraits that follow her through the years. To help the easily confused (like my pretty self) there's a fabulous opening section that names and describes many of the book's major players. There's also a portrait gallery of Henry VIII's wives and description of their mostly shortened lives. The back of the book contains a useful chronology of events, a well-cited bibliography of every source Thomas used or even thought of using, and an index. You're in safe hands with this thorough researcher.

Thomas attempts in this book to show the life of Elizabeth without commenting on her too much. Yes, Elizabeth could be as cruel and calculating as her predecessors and she wasn't afraid to "Off with their head" a couple of her closest compatriots. In the end, however, she comes off as a remarkable woman. Thomas leaves plenty of room for speculation on lurid topics that cover everything from Elizabeth's sex life to her love of sweets for dinner. Nothing here is written in stone, but this is probably as good a teen biography of this great woman you're going to get for at least another one hundred years. As someone who looked upon reading this book initially as a chore, I can tell you honestly that it was a joy to go through. A biography that deserves remembrance.

5 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL.......2003-11-28

This is a wonderful and very detailed book on Queen Elizabeth I of England- it explains everything from the divorce from Catherine of Aragorn to her reported affairs with Robin Dudley. If you want to know more about English history, this is definitely a great place to start.

This is the best biography on Elizabeth I that I've read so far, and it has pictures of the portraits that she appeared in in her life. And you'll learn pretty much everything you ever wanted to know about Elizabeth the First- from what her three nicknames were (Gloriana, Good Queen Bess, and the Virgin Queen) to the last lie that she every told her sister, Mary.

This is a great book, and I recommend it to everyone!

3 out of 5 stars Well written, but content inappropriate for pre-teens.......2003-11-13

While the publisher touts this book as appropriate for children 10 and up, I think the School Journal recommendation of Grades 8 and up is much more appropriate. My eight year old wanted to read this book for a class project. I mistakenly thought it would be an excellent choice, but by page 17, I'd forbidden her to continue. By that time, I'd been asked to define ýprostitute,ý ýcastration,ý ýdisemboweling,ý ýliaison,ý "skin ulcer," and ýdeformedý as she read passages that included subjects like the corruption in the priesthood (priests living openly with prostitutes), the adultery charges against Anne Boleyn (including explanations of how the fact that her third child was born stillborn and deformed might have led to rumors about Anneýs morality, as deformity was believed to stem from the woman participating in witchcraft or sexual intercourse with the devil) , and Henryýs persecution of those who refused to accept his new authority as head of the Church of England (including the execution, castration, and disemboweling of priests who defied him). While all the information is accurate and well-researched, this gritty detail (much of which I didn't have to deal with until I was a sophomore in college) seems inappropriate for a child's introduction to the fascinating life of Queen Elizabeth I or Tudor England. It is much more likely -- especially for a sensitive child -- to put them off both subjects forever!

3 out of 5 stars The First Book.......2003-07-28

When I was at my city library I was digging through all the children's biographies and came across this book on Elizabeth I. I thought it would be nice to study this "great" woman, so I decieded to give this book a try.
I did do a good choice. Though it confused me a little bit and was boring in places, I enjoyed it-and it increased my interest in not just Elizabeth, but all royals. I will have to say that another biography on Elizabeth II that I got at the same time was much better for me at the time.

This is a fabulous book, covering some of the more risque elements of the silent film era, as well as covering political issues. Loved Mr. Brownlow's coverage of HYPOCRITES (1915), a Lois Weber film which exists but is unfortunately as yet inaccessible on video. Can't wait for his Mary Pickford coffee table book to come out, hopefully in the next few months!

5 out of 5 stars Out of the night..........2007-07-23

I was born in 1958 so I don't really remember Zorro the first time it aired on network TV, but I do remember it in syndication on local TV as a kid. To me, Guy Williams always held the image of a hero. I do in great detail remember that first broadcast of Lost in Space back in 1965. Although I will always love Lost in Space as my childhood favorite Zorro is next in line.

This book sets before us what I think is a great man, an interesting man, but not a perfect man. Guy Williams: Man behind the Mask was written with a great deal of input from his family, close friends, and professional co workers. Over the years I've had the chance to meet several people who come up in this book. A couple of weeks ago I was talking about Guy with a man who was a cinematographer for Disney back in the Zorro days (but not on Zorro). My friend always speaks of Guy with a smile on his face, and tells of a man of great warmth and intellect that left us to soon. I wish I could have met Guy Williams myself, but this book makes me feel as if I have.

Guy Williams: Man behind the Mask is a great read!

4 out of 5 stars Review.......2007-04-02

This book has notable pearls of wisdom but appears fragmented in depicting this legendary hero in his latter years due to his medical illness over a number of years that proved to be his demise - a brain aneurysm.
This person to this day in many foreign nations besides ours represents the palladin of justice throughout the world and still does in the hearts of the global world.
Let us remember this person Guy Williams (Armando Joseph Catalano - Sicilian Ancestory) as he would want us - the Palladin of Justice.

5 out of 5 stars A Zorro for the Ages.......2005-11-29

As something of a Zorro/Guy Williams expert myself I didn't know what to expect from Antoinette Lane's book. I have to say I was pleasantly surprised; everytime I turned a page I found out something else I didn't know about the elusive Guy Williams. The research for this book is exhaustive and if you have never written a book then you have no idea how difficult it is to find good solid information on a relativly obscure 1950's tv actor much less find their motivations for things they've done in their life. I also found Lane to be a good writer and not just a "secretary";she involves the reader in the life of Guy Williams and that's what a good biographer does. Guy Williams was not perfect,Lord knows none of us are but he led an interesting and entertaining life and Lane's biography opens up a window and lets us take a peek. Some fans may not like what they see, that's not the authors fault. Some people simply need to grow up. I for one like Guy Williams even more now than I did before. Thank you Ms.Lane for an excellent book.

5 out of 5 stars A must have for the Guy Williams fan. .......2005-11-09

Fans of Guy Williams will be thrilled by the prodigious research and this carefully crafted biography penned by author Antoinette Girgenti Lane. Lane conducted scores upon scores of personal interviews with the actor's wife, fellow actors, directors, producers, stuntmen, children, sibling, friends and virtually everyone who had significant contact with Williams. Lane's efforts in this regard are remarkable but this personal history is further augmented by the written record. Ms Lane quotes from a wealth of domestic and foreign newspaper articles and magazines. She has produced, in 500 well written pages, the essence of Guy Williams. This is an important work and a must have for any Guy Williams fan.

Williams had an up and down acting career. He appeared in several movies and starred as the father on the TV series "Lost in Space" but he achieved world wide fame for his earlier roll in "Zorro". With his European origin, athletic skills and dashing good looks he was a natural to play the swashbuckling Fox, the champion of the downtrodden, El Zorro.

The man had charm and joie de vie like many leading man of his day but we learn that Williams was not an empty suit. He preferred to read and had an undying love of knowledge for its own sake. He was a skilled sailor, a talented fencer, an amateur astronomer and lived with a quiet dignity. When his fortunes faded in Hollywood he complained to no one. When things were financially hard, he was still cheerful, generous and kind. In middle age his fame as Zorro soared anew as reruns of the series begain to air in South America and later in Japan.

I admit, prior to reading this book, I had no real interest in Williams. I picked it up because it had an interesting cover but after reading the author's introduction, I was hooked. I brought the book home that day and as I read those pages I came to like the man. Did he have faults? Of course; no one is without some blame. But in all the interviews not a single associate, including his ex-wife, had a harsh word for Williams. I liked his grace, his charm and his wit and so, apparently, did they.

No one spoke badly of Williams because he was a most considerate man and one of that all too rare breed, a complete gentleman. His attention to and kind treatment of a troubled young teenager gives the reader a glimpse at the nature of a man no one chooses to speak of badly. Guy Williams was Zorro and Lane lets us understand why.

1 out of 5 stars What lay behind the mask..........2005-08-03

A bittersweet story that reveals the carefree and emotionally careless rogue that lived behind the mask of devoted husband and family man. I remember as a small child of 5 back in 1957 wishing that Guy Williams/Zorro was my Dad... instead of the everyday workingman who was. I grew out of that fantasy shortly after that, but after reading this book, I now can appreciate even more who the truly heroic men in this life are: the men, like my own Dad, who are ALWAYS there for us... working hard... juggling schedules to make sure they make it to our games, or our plays, or our Father/Daughter dances... or to simply tuck us in at night... and the devoted husbands... who truly care about those they love... and those who love them... and show it every day... in their words and in their actions.

What is revealed in this sometimes amateurishly written biography by a devoted fan, is a man who in one breath is described as selfless and caring... and yet in the next breath a selfish and sometimes cruel man surfaces... one who abandons his family for months and even years on end... who tramples over his family's feelings while exalting in the false glory heaped upon him by faceless, nameless fans. Who is so taken by the empty glory he found in a 2 year acting role (Disney's Zorro) that he spends the rest of his life pretending to be that character in show after show all across Argentina when his career has been labeled a joke in the US.

Had the book simply revealed a few foibles... those imperfections that we all possess... I would have continued to admire Armando Catalano (aka: Guy Williams)... but instead this biography unearthed the dirty truth about a man who emotionally tormented his devoted wife; drawing her in with words of love and promise, all the while keeping his distance, both emotionally and physically, whenever it suited him or his selfish purpose. A man who kept a wall up between himself and his only sister... a woman who simply wanted him to know her and TALK to her.

I do not fault his family for trying to remember only the good things when they speak of him in this book. THEIR devotion and love for HIM was never at question. I suppose only an outsider such as myself, the reader, not hindered by the myopia of family devotion, can see the truth in the shallow life Mr. Williams cultivated. That he died alone (his corpse unnoticed for almost a week - the author deliberately omitting the fact that it was the smell that finally made the neighbors curious) in his adopted country of Argentina, that country that professed to love him so much, seems somehow sadly poetic.

If you are, and wish to remain, a devoted Guy Williams fan, I do not recommend that you read this book.

4 out of 5 stars Joey Hill steals the show!.......2006-08-15

The plot description given by Amazon is good, so I won't go over it again. Let me say that all three stories are decent, but the one that haunts my mind is the one by Joey Hill. Wow. Wow, wow, wow. I have never been to a board meeting in my life like the one in her story, but let me tell you, if I could, I'd go to one everyday!!! The creative toys developed just for Savannah by her men under the leadership of Matt will take your breath away.

Mia/Mina and Ty's story was good as well with some heat to it, but Ms. Hill was just sizzling and overshadowed the other two authors completely.

The violent struggles of Northern Ireland have consumed journalist Peter Taylor since his first assignment there in 1972. One fateful day, "Bloody Sunday," 14 unarmed men were gunned down by British paratroopers; this was the turning point in Taylor's journalistic career, inspiring him to make 50 documentaries and write five books on the troubled nation. Behind the Mask, his sixth, is a provocative foray into the organization so synonymous with violence: the Irish Republican Army and its political wing of Sinn Fein. Based on one of Taylor's television documentaries shown in both the United Kindom and the United States, he was given unprecedented access to members of the Republican movement--a rare journalistic feat. Taylor describes the interviews as "intense, often emotional and remarkably frank."

From his interviews with dozens of I.R.A. and Sinn Fein members (including some confessed killers), Taylor gained fascinating insight into the movement's past, present, and future goals. The I.R.A. is certainly not portrayed in a heroic light; Taylor is graphic in the descriptions of atrocities such as Enniskillen and the Harrods bombing. But the I.R.A. and Sinn Fein are given a voice, and readers may draw their own conclusions. Behind the Mask is an important book for those who want a better understanding of the conflict that has ripped Northern Ireland apart.

3 out of 5 stars Secret History of the IRA.......2002-10-10

This is a fair and informative book on The Troubles. I've read many (Holland, Coogan, Bell, etc) and thought this one was the best until I read "Secret History of the IRA" by Ed Moloney. In terms of depth of insight and analysis, especially as it relates to Gerry Adams and the Peace Process, Behind the Mask pales.

4 out of 5 stars Depressing to see the other reviews.......2002-03-12

Coming from a long family history of involvement in the struggle for Irish liberation, it's so depressing to see the same old cliches and anger in the other reviews for this excellent book.

The British never quite understood the Irish, as former British Prime Minister James Callaghan admitted in the late 1970s. They never understood the intra-community hatred, and the hatred towards the security forces. And as this book shows, the Republican movement never quite understood that the Brits were prepared to fight them to a standstill, locking down vast chunks of Northern Ireland in order to quell the most visible effects. The sympathy the British people ever had with the Republican movement was extinguished after years of dreadful attrocities on the mainland, leading to a grim determination to give UK Government permission to "take out" the perpetrators, whether in Northern Ireland, UK, or overseas.

And despite the Republican's clear intelligence, foresight and focused strategy, they failed to win the minds of successive US Governments, who were rightly embarrassed by the echolons of ignorant, ill-advised and ill-taught Americans claiming Irish roots and therefore permission to interfere.

As the US Department of State implicitly communicated to Sinn Fein and IRA after September 11, 2001: "It's over boys".

5 out of 5 stars Can the Brits hear us now?.......2000-09-21

Peter Taylor has done a phenomenal job bringing the truth out about the Republican Community. He has consistently managed to reverse the British Government's efforts to dehumanise the people of Ireland. This book is a great start for anyone looking to get a better idea of exactly what Sinn Fein and the IRA are and were about. Buy the book, you can't be disappointed. Additionally, the video tape from the PBS broadcast is *INCREDIBLE*. You can order it from pbs.org - I suggest you do. It will give you more of an idea of how human these men and women really are/were.

5 out of 5 stars A powerful book about true freedom fighters.......2000-09-10

This book is a very informative and accurate portrayal of the struggle in Northern Ireland. It does not take a biased point of view, it shows the most glorious moments of the Irish Republican Army's history, as well as it's lowest points. It outlines the path to peace that Sinn Feinn and other Republicans along with some Loyalists are trying to achieve. It is wrong though, for the way that some people ignorantly call the Irish Republican Army a "Terrortist" organization.

The Irish Republican Army is exactly that, they are an organized Army fighting for their homeland and the freedom and protection of the minority Catholics in Northern Ireland. They are just as much of a defense force as any other nations military, and are just as much an organized military force as the British army, and if I might add, much more humane. I could easily compare the situation to that of German invading forces in yugoslavia in WWII. There was a resistance army that fought the foreign invading forces, yet the world community did not refer to them as "Terrorists" but as freedom fighters. That is exactly what the IRA is, unfortunately, when they choose to make progress towards peace, Sectarian violence has always gotten in the way, splinter groups of Republican and Loyalists have constantly thwarted the peace process, I hope that such things will not happen in the future. Great book, a must read for anyone who wants information on the struggle in Northern Ireland.

5 out of 5 stars Terrorists? Do you really think so?.......2000-04-03

So often in reviews of books relating to the conflict in the north of Ireland, we hear the term "terrorist" applied to the IRA and the expression "Sinn Fein is the political wing of the IRA". Number one, if you define terrorism as acts that result in the death of innocent woman and children, then the term should be applied to those who run all Western policy, resulting as it has in the deaths of children in Belgrade, Kosovo, Iraq, Sudan, etc. The term "terrorist" has no validity unless it is applied universally - as opposed to selectively against your enemies. The IRA are no more a terrorist organisation than NATO. Taylor's book for the most part reflects this truth but his editor or publisher has cynically added the insulting cliches - no doubt as a marketing tool, ie. to make it acceptable to the mind set of those who unquestioningly parrot these insults. Taylor is in the know. He is objective. He writes extremely well. All these factors make this book essential reading to all students of conflict in Ireland. But they should not start with the term "terrorist" in their mind.

This book is one of many that exposes the lie that Sinn Fein is the Political wing of the IRA. They are both part of the same Republican movement but the IRA is no more Sinn Fein's armed wing than the RUC is the Ulster Unionists armed wing, or the British Army is the Armed wing of the UK government. Yes they are linked - but that does not make them the same. Such lazy, imprecise thinking is a factor in matters Irish remaining confused to the outside world. Taylors book makes the distinction skillfully and therefore should inform all those who approach this book with an open mind.

3 out of 5 stars Useful.......2006-08-10

The citatations and material are somewhat dated, but they are accurate, relevant, and well researched as far as I can tell. Sometimes the author presents a tone of thinly veiled contempt for the subjects, but this is balanced out well by his own admissions of weaknesses and similar failings. Overall, a good informative book that could be more useful if brought up to date with DSM IV and with a few more modern references. Also, the work could benefit by more information on how to use the knowledge that is imparted, e.g. how people in a wider range of roles might implement plans for self-improvement and helping others. Overall an insight producing easy to read book with a straightforward and appropriately narrowed topic.

5 out of 5 stars Very informative book.......2004-12-07

Dr. Oates' purpose in writing this book was to offer an insight of "disorders" found among people at church and often within our own families. He focused on "disordered behaviors" in religious people. He believed that many individuals have "semblances of sanity" and the goal of church leaders and mentors is to "unmask" these behaviors so that the "image of God" can be seen instead. He stated that he wrote the book to aid parents, teachers, future leaders, and Christian ministers to "defuse name-calling" that "downgrades" Christian brothers and sisters (15).

Dr. Oates gave an overview of various "masks" then provided descriptions of how these masks appeared in our congregations. For instance, he devoted a chapter of his book on "persons on the edge of chaos." These are the people with "severe personality disorders" like borderline, paranoid, or schizotypal personalities (108). According to Dr. Oates, these people are "stably unstable" who experience "false starts" and "failures" in school, marriage, and work (110). They tended to have "outbursts of intense anger" that are "frequent" and "inappropriate," and experienced "turbulent shifts of mood" (i.e. from depression to anxiety to irritability then rage) (110). These individuals also committed acts that are "severely impulsive" (spending, sex, overeating, etc.). Since stress aggravates the symptoms of this disorder, Dr. Oates suggestions to ministers and church members on how to help people with Borderline Personality disorder in a church setting- be aware of "impending crises" in the person's life, such as "beginning and end of a school year," "anticipation of death from a prolonged illness in a parent or spouse," and "loss of a job" (116). If a person is emotionally or mentally diminishing, then it is the responsibility of ministers and church members to accompany the person to a doctor.

Another chapter I found insightful was entitled the "Mask of the Packaged Personality," dedicated to describing the "histrionic" person (30). Dr. Oates shared that this personality type is in need of developing "steadfastness" as a character trait (which is also referred to as personal "fidelity") (40). The community of believers should reinforce ideals of "faith, hope, and love that endures," by building and maintaining covenantal relationships with church members. In forming deeper friendships, emotional and spiritual support will be in place during times of losses and disappoints (41).

Although a person with narcissistic personality disorder has an "inflated self-esteem, "lack of empathy for others," "a grandiose imagination," and an "arrogant unflappableness," I found it interesting that narcissistic traits are not all negative. For example, Dr. Oates referred to this character type as "bundles of creativity that need taming" (54). These types of people have a "certain naivete" and "guilelessness" that he considered "rare metal in the human spirit" (55).

Dr. Oates discussed "formation and transformation" in the final chapter. He highlighted Galatians 2:20 in an effort to merge Paul's purpose in writing the passage with his own purpose in writing the book-that Christ must be formed in the believer. As I read Dr. Oates' book, I kept thinking about different people I have encountered in my church and I tried to decipher which mask they were "wearing." This book made me realize that there are ways people can minister to those with personality disorders, and ways in which people with personality disorders can minister to others. I agree with Dr. Oates' statement, "whatever God has called them to be and become, He does not intend that they be permanent mental patients" (118).

4 out of 5 stars A Classic.......2001-06-28

When Wayne Oates wrote his book fourteen years ago, the literature on personality disorders was very scarce. Back then, Hervey Checkley's 1941 book, THE MASK OF SANITY, had stood as the major source for years. Wayne communicates great concern for church people whose sanity is not an outward expression of an inward possession.

Despite the formality of the liturgical churches and the informality of the revivalistic churches, these church people have only gained a veneer of religiosity. Oates makes a striking comment on why parishioners and clergy with personality disorders are not deeply changed via participation in corporate worship or revival services. These large meetings lack the power of personal confrontation found in small groups or one on one.

Wayne gained much insight about personality disorders from various biblical characters. He found the writings of the early church fathers about disorders in religious people very insightful. John Bunyan's PILGRIM'S PROGRESS portrayed for Oates the attitudes, and ways of dealing with these disorders within our encounter with God's presence.

His book seeks to guide Christians in unmasking the pseudo self overlying the image of God within the person with a personality disorder. His prayer is for such unmasking to enable the real person to emerge. His chosen audience is not the academy, but either those practicing pastor ministry or those preparing for it. He hopes the book with be discussed between pastor and people He is confident that discussing the book can help reduce much of the congregation's tension and help it serve as an instrument of healing.

Fourteen years ago, Wayne made a very pointed statement about the church's preoccupation with the corporate business model for local churches in this book. Whenever this happens, he claims, some people with very strong personality disorders are applauded as church growth heroes. Some of these `heroes' exploit those laboring under a weaker personality disorder. A few of those with weak personality disorders are either ignored or ambitiously trampled under foot.

.Staying in print for its fourteenth year is a great testimony to the usefulness of Oates' book. Each chapter discusses a personality disorder or a cluster of disorders and how the Christian can help unmask the person so that the real them can emerge. His closing chapter outlines ways for the church to prevent, affect, and addresses personality disorders. I would recommend Oates' book for those who desire to plunge deeper into this subject after reading Pate's book on the same subject. In my opinion the combination of the strengths of both books lay the needed foundation for addressing this important aspect of church health. If I were to lead a discussion on this subject with the members of my church, I would use this book as a backup resource and have them read Pate's book

5 out of 5 stars Great For CPE GROUPS.......1999-02-21

My CPE group just completed a unit of using this book in didactic learning and we found it to be very helpful in distinguishing behavioral characteristics in patients and ourselves. I reccommend it to any group who works with people.

3 out of 5 stars Easy-read application of DSM to congregational dynamics.......1996-05-14

Oates gives portraits of individuals with the various DSM personality disorders.Using an accessible and interesting style and keeping jargon to a minimum, he suggests ways to make a tentative assessment in religious settings and ways for clergy to respond to each disorder in a helpful fashion. Not for those with clinical training, but helpful for those without it.

1 out of 5 stars An atrocious, biased and bigoted tome.......2005-07-14

I have read a lot of books published by Harvest House, such as the works of Rhodes, alongside the other books Ankerberg and Weldon brought out on Mormonism. This book, and other by these two, are sick, ignorant, fraudulent charges against Mormonism that have no basis whatsoever in truth. From the start to the very end, they perform eisegesis on the Bible and LDS scriptures, quote out of context Latter-day Saints, jump to illogical conclusions, and so forth. Add to this the fact that they hold no legitimate degrees, notwithstanding their complaints of this charge near the end of the tome, and any plausibility this book has is vapourised. That one should avoid this book like the plague is a sentiment that the reviewer, JP Holding, critic of Mormonism and author of the book "The Mormon Defenders," seems to share, as did the co-editors of the book "The New Mormon Challenge," Carl Mosser and Paul Owen.

This book is a (...). Surely the authors know that what they wrote are lies.

2 out of 5 stars Good for source material and that's about it.......2004-08-21

You may get your money's worth if you use this one critically. It contains plenty of original quotes from ormon sources that speak for themselves, and that's the ONLY reason this book gets two stars. But there is little in the way of depth of research beyond primary LDS material. And then there is something that would make a smaller book completely unusable: The veneer of sensationalism. Perhaps LDS ceremonies are derived from occult practices, perhaps not; but if they are, Ankerberg and Weldon could have come up with much more rational ways to say so. Two evangelical scholars, Mosser and Owen, years ago decried the inadequacies of counter-Mormon apologetics and rightly castigated these authors for producing too much of a diatribe and not enough of substance in their work; I would not recommend this book at all were it not for the wealth of original source material it references. I use it while holding my nose.

1 out of 5 stars Doesn't deserve any stars........2004-02-11

This book is not definitive and is not well researched. It laces together decades old myths, and does nothing to try to substantiate, one way or another, the reality behind what they are saying. These guys make money writing this stuff! It relies on testimony of those already discredited, gossip, and other less than reliable sources. Want to read a good review of this book? Check out: Peterson Daniel C., ed. FARMS Review of Books. 9 vols. Provo, Utah: Foundation for Ancient Research and Mormon Studies (FARMS), 1989-1997. Granted, the review is by an author who is a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, but I think you'll find the review based on facts. You'll also find it a bit entertaining.

1 out of 5 stars Dime a Dozen; Cookie Cutter (and I'm not LDS).......2000-08-14

I believe I should first state my religious belief and association with Mormon(ism). I am a Protestant who has studied Mormonism for quite a long time. I have read so many book like this one. Since I have read so many similar titles, I have become very selective in which books I like. This book is essentially a cookie cutter book that has little original information. Similar titles include:

The Mormon Illusion Unmasking Mormonism Mormonism Answered Verse By Verse How To Answer A Mormon

The Facts On The Mormon Church Letters To A Mormon Elder (better then the rest but...)

All of which I have read. They are all the same and they all present the same old, unscholarly arguments (excluding LTAME). There are enough books out like this one, I don't understand why the authors had to publish this book. My only assumption is for money, but I can't be sure. It's time to stop publishing these tired arguments (see FARMS and FAIR) and actually [put out scholarly books that deal with the early church fathers, that deal with extensive biblical interpretation, that deal with arguments put out by FARMS.

Some people give books like this one 5 stars. I used to agree and 6 months ago I probably would give it the best rating, but from studying extensively LDS apologetics, these books are tired, outdated, and essentially horrible.

I don't get what's up with the Ankerberg/Weldon series anyway. They aren't experts in any of the subjects they publish, but they have like (what?) 200 titles out? I read their evolution book which was just as bad as this one. Neither of them have degrees in biology, so WHAT ARE THEY DOING WRITING A BOOK ABOUT SOMETHING THEY AREN'T EXPERTS IN? But apparently Ankerberg has studied evolution "extensively" so we are supposed to buy his book? In the same sense, that logic applies to this book. It simply isn't put out by experts in Mormonism, and doesn't deserve a purchase. While Ankerberg is an expert in philosophy, I'm interested in what he writes in that subject, he is simply out of his league trying to tackle Mormonism.

1 out of 5 stars Two of our most brilliant minds toiling in anonymity..........2000-05-12

Do it! I dare you. Click on the name of this books authors and see how many they've written. Isn't it absolutely amazing? These two men in their short lives (any life would be too short) have amassed an immense amount of knowledge on: UFO's, the Occult, Catholicism, Hinduism, Mormonism, Jehovah's Witnesses, New Ageism, Holistic Medicine, the Trinity, Evolution, Charles Darwin, Angels, Homosexuality, Halloween (I don't wanna know), blah, blah, blah...And me, in my puny pathetic life laboring diligently in the vineyard to understand one small part of one branch of engineering. Where's a Nobel Prize when you need it? Do the nation's governors know about these guys? Why, they could replace an entire university faculty!
