Book Description

Dr. Bill Brockton, the founder of the world-famous Body Farm, is hard at work on a troubling new case. A young man's battered body has been found in nearby Chattanooga, and it's up to the talented Dr. Brockton to assemble the pieces of the forensic puzzle. Brockton is brought into the case by the rising star of the state's mechanical examiners, Jess Carter.

Just as they're on the verge of breaking the case open, events take a terrifying turn. Brockton has re-created the Chattanooga death scene at the Body Farm, but a killer tampers with it in a shocking way: placing another corpse at the setting, confusing authorities and putting Brockton's career and life in jeopardy. Soon Brockton himself is accused of the horrific new crime, and the once-beloved professor becomes an outcast. As the net around him tightens, Brockton must use all of his forensic skills to prove his own innocence . . . before he ends up behind bars with some of the very killers he's helped to convict.

Flesh and Bone is another roller-coaster ride into the world of forensic anthropology, its twists and turns marked by drama and pathos, humor and grief, families and friends and enemies. With captivatingly real characters, plus fascinating scientific insights drawn from the case files of a living forensic legend, this astonishing novel confirms Jefferson Bass as one of our most talented authors of suspense.

4 out of 5 stars One very good book........2007-08-09

First Sentence: The chain-link gate yowled like an angry tomcat in the watery light of dawn.

Forensic anthropologist Dr. Bill Brockton is helping state medical examiner, and his burgeoning love, Jess Carter with the case of a man's body found sexually mutilated, tied to a tree, and dressed in drag. He is also dealing with the suspension of this job after a lecture on evolution upsets a student who believes in creationism. When Brockton thinks things can't get worse, he is accused and arrested for murder.

There was a lot happening in this book and Jefferson Bass tied it all together into a gripping, interesting story. There was so much I liked about this book. Brockton isn't the classic macho protagonist; he's a bit unsure of himself, hesitant about a new relationship and able to cry. That he has been given interesting supporting characters adds balance and dimension to the story. Some may not care for the character's lecture on evolution, but I found it interesting and it is relevant to the story. The description of the protagonist's experience as a murder suspect provides a different aspect than one normally gets. Add to all this great dialogue, a strong sense of place and emotional tension, and the result is one very good book.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful !!!.......2007-08-09

Jefferson Bass has done it again. He's got me hooked and I can't wait for his next book to appear. Keep'em coming Mr. Bass.

4 out of 5 stars Dr. Death.......2007-03-26

In their second effort, Jefferson Bass has put forth a fast paced novel again featuring Dr. Bill Brockton, forensic anthroplogist, college instructor and founder of the Body Farm. When Dr. Brockton begins to investigate the murder of an unknown male, the plot starts rolling. Assisted by Dr. Jess Carter, M.E. From Chattanooga, Brockton uncovers the victim's identity. As they dig deeper into the case, the stakes are raised and it is obvious that someone does not want the truth known. Somewhat predictable plot twist awaits the reader half way through the book, but all-in-all, a fast read.

5 out of 5 stars The Dynamic Duo is delving deeper into the realms of imagination.......2007-03-22

"Flesh and Blood" is the sequel to the writing team Jefferson Bass' first fictional work, "Carved in Bone." 'Jefferson Bass' is a pseudonym from Dr. William Bass, the famed forensic anthropologist and writer of "Death's Acre" (a non-fiction autobiography and excellent treatise on forensic anthropology) and Jon Jefferson, who worked with Dr. Bass producing "Death's Acre" and two National Geographic documentaries on the Body Farm.

"Flesh and Bone" takes up close to where its predecessor, "Carved in Bone" leaves off. Dr. Bill Brockton and his faithful GA assistant, Miranda, are setting up an experiment on the Body Farm. Their goal is to reproduce a gory murder of a young may they believe to be a hate crime against homosexuals. By reproducing the crime using a donated cadaver, they are hoping to clearly establish the time of death of a young man left hanging in a tree dressed in drag paraphenalia and brutally mutilated.

As the story goes on, Dr. Brockton and Dr. Jess Carter, the Chattanooga, TN Medical Examiner, are getting much closer. It looks like Dr. Brockton may stand a chance at love after 2 years missing his deceased wife.

Of course, not all things are going smoothly. A classroom lecture gone somewhat awry, ends up with Dr. Brockton having to defend himself against creationists, mirroring the infamous 'Scopes Monkey Trial' which happened only a few miles from Knoxville in Dayton, TN. Some would call this plotline 'unnecessary' but I think it's very timely and interesting--considering this week an East Coast teacher was fired under accusations of witchcraft--for teaching counter to the views of her principal.

But the situation decomposes much faster than the bodies--when the crime scene mockup is tampered with, Dr. Brockton is the prime suspect for murder. As the stories hurdles on, Brockton's job, family, even his life are all at stake.

"Flesh and Bone" is a fast-paced and very real look at the life of a forensic anthropologist. The only fault I can find with the book is that it's perhaps 'too real.' The commonalities between Dr. Brockton and Dr. William Bass are just too similar to be missed and in this reviewer's opinion, show some lack of imagination. Art Bohannon, the Knoxville Police Department fingerprint expert and childrens' advocate, is really Art Bohannon and names of people credited with helping the team in some way were only changed slightly--if at all.

"Carved in Bone" depicted a situation in an East TN county that was very similar to reality. "Flesh and Bone" did go a step further--taking real situations and bending them to work in the book.

In "Flesh and Bone" we look at the judicial system from the point of view of the Defense, which definitely is a twist from the noted criminalist's usual position. That showed imagination and a whole lot of research. Well done, gentlemen--I hope to see book three very soon.

Book Description

When Zen Flesh, Zen Bones was published in 1957 it became an instant sensation with an entire generation of readers who were just beginning to experiment with Zen. Over the years it has inspired leading American Zen teachers, students, and practitioners. Its popularity is as strong today as ever.
Zen Flesh, Zen Bones is a book that offers a collection of accessible, primary Zen sources so that readers can struggle over the meaning of Zen for themselves. It includes 101 Zen Stories, a collection of tales that recount actual experiences of Chinese and Japanese Zen teachers over a period of more than five centuries; The Gateless Gate, the famous thirteenth century collection of Zen koans; Ten Bulls, a twelfth century commentary on the stages of awareness leading to enlightenment; and Centering, a 4,000 year-old teaching from India that some consider to be the roots of Zen.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Strangely comforting.......2007-01-23

I don't know why I find this book such a comfort. But it is one. I have read and reread it for over thirty years now. Zen is very foreign to American life. And it is hardly the answer to that life. But it is a partial answer -- if its influence on me is any indication.

5 out of 5 stars Expand Your Mind.......2007-01-06

Zen Buddisim doesn't have an official set of scriptures like all the other great religions of the world, but I consider this little dandy my set of Zen scriptures. These wonderful little Koans will considerably expand your mind and give you plenty to ponder upon or not to ponder upon. Each one can be read over and over again with new meaning sprouting forth each time. The book itself is a nice size and feels good to hold. I recommend this to anyone wanting to be at better peace with themselfs and everything around them. Beautiful.

5 out of 5 stars An endless treasure.......2006-10-11

I still own my battered, much-read paperback copy of this sublime little book, which I bought in 1971. To this day it seems to me the single best introduction to Zen available, not as theory or philosophy or even daily practice, but as direct experience. Like most of the previous reviewers, I can return to its pages again & again, finding wisdom & food for thought ... or non-thought, if you will. :)

Here is the paradox of mystery composed of absolute clarity & purity, as expressed through often humorous, even (seemingly) ridiculous stories ... yet they make sense at a very deep level, one that bypasses rational, logical thought or conscious understanding. Behind the sometimes giggling face of the monk is a most rigorous, utterly focused mind, one that cuts preconceptions & ego to ribbons.

For anyone interested in the essence of Zen, for anyone wanting to step outside of the world of ten thousand shallow, mass-produced things, this book is indispensable. Most highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Finding A Diamond..........2006-09-20

No doctrine, no methods really: but the literature of Zen, and great world literature - Paul Reps compiles, in ZEN FLESH, ZEN BONES, a great compendium of Zen stories, all very short and drawn from 500 years worth of the varied experiences of Zen practitioners from Japan and China.

Add to this the koans of "Gateless Gate," "10 Bulls" - a translation of a 12th century poetic text, and "Centering," an early Sanskrit guite to study and practice.

ZEN FLESH, ZEN BONES in totality isn't going to blow you away; rather this is something you discover, and the insights within will come alive within you. After the passage of much time, it's ever more valuable to access and get to know.

-David Alston

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2006-09-07

"Zen Flesh, Zen Bones" is probably the best introductory book to Zen Buddhism available in the United States. It is an anthology containing Zen stories and riddles. The prose is light; "Zen Flesh, Zen Bones" is not a weighty read that will discourage readers from delving into the subject matter. Read this book before any other on Zen!

Book Description

Flesh and Bone: An Introduction to Forensic Anthropology offers the reader a solid background in forensic anthropology by out- lining some of the methods and procedures that best define the discipline. It introduces readers to the rapidly growing area known as forensic science, providing a comprehensive look at many of the participants in the field. Nafte avoids technical terminology whenever possible and includes photographs, charts, and illustrations to complement the text.

The book evolves sequentially, beginning with a discussion of all things forensic and then continuing to detail the broad field of anthropology, the process of death, decomposition, and skeletonization. Methods of identifying the human skeleton, DNA analysis, and the reconstruction of identity are highlighted. The final chapter deals with the modern application of forensic anthropology to human rights missions.

Flesh and Bone was required reading for my course in forensic anthropology. I found it very informative and interesting. I like how many of the legal terms were translated. The book has inspired me to pursue this field of study even further. I recommend it to students who are nervous about the sciences and cannot get through alot of technical terminology, and for those who are curious about crime scene investigation. The pictures are helpful even though some are quite graphic.

Book Description

Miami Dolphins linebacker-turned-lawyer Jake Lassiter returns in the seventh Lassiter mystery from acclaimed South Florida writer and former lawyer Paul Levine.

In Flesh & Bones, Jake takes on a seemingly unwinnable case. When Miami model Chrissy Bernhardt strides through a South Beach night spot and plugs three deadly shots into a bar patron, later identified as her tycoon father Harry Bernhardt, the lawyer watches the killing from the next stool. Yet when the apparent murderess asks him to represent her, Jake readily agrees, swayed as always by a pretty face and by nagging glimmers of reasonable doubt.

Mounting Chrissy's legal defense, Jake sets out to unearth the family secrets that molded her past: his cover girl client is either a cold-blooded killer or a sexual abuse victim. Through hypnosis, Chrissy's psychiatrist and trusted friend Dr. Lawrence Schein has helped her remember long-suppressed incidents of childhood incest.

As Jake struggles to learn if the memories are real or fabricated, he stumbles upon a scheme to manipulate South Florida's fresh water supply, masterminded by Chrissy's half-brother Guy. Delving deeper, he uncovers a suspicious link between the doctor and the developer.Once again, the personal and professional become intertwined when Jake falls hard for his beautiful client.

Aided once more in Flesh & Bones, by his unorthodox but faithful braintrust -- moonshine-guzzling Granny Lassiter, cranky retired coroner Doc Riggs and precocious nephew Kip--Jake must keep Chrissy off Death Row if she's to stay in his life.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Cheekbones and Chic Bones.......2005-07-28

FLESH AND BONES is the latest and the best of the seven Jake Lassiter novels. In FLESH AND BONES Paul Levine introduces us to, what is for him, a rare bird---a vulnerable, victimized woman. The only problem is that the woman, supermodel Chrissy Bernhardt, is accused of the murder of her own father, shot to death in front of a club full of eyewitnesses.

Levine has written a taut, intelligent, entertaining, and wryly humorous psychothriller. Despite the overwhelming evidence of Chrissy's guilt, Jake takes the case and dedicates himself to finding a way out for his client.

What transpires is a tale of sordid manipulation, exploitation, lies and incest which is engrossing from the outset and never flags.

With FLESH AND BONES not only has Jake Lassiter inherited the mantle of Travis McGee---Paul Levine has joined Scott Turow and John Grisham as one of the best 'legal thriller' authors working today.

Oil geologist and reluctant crime solver Em Hansen is one of the most interesting characters in recent mystery fiction--a strong woman with believable weaknesses and none of the smugness or coyness that bog down heroines of other, better-selling series. At the start of her fourth book, Sarah Andrews has Em helping her distant mother deliver a calf on the family ranch in Wyoming and wondering about her career choices: "If I hadn't found my own way to the edge, life might have been quite different for me. I might have had what it took to stay on my parents' ranch, or found myself married up to a neighboring spread, instead of heading off into these other lives of mine...." Luckily for us, Em's other lives--chronicled so sharply in A Fall in Denver, Tensleep, and Mother Nature--all available in paperback--make for rewarding reading. The latest book begins with an offer from a patronizing ex-boss to help the unemployed Em find a job--if she will try to discover why his 16-year-old daughter, Cecilia, is having such a hard time getting over the suspicious death of her mother. Em has to dig deeply into Cecilia's repressed memory and the dead woman's heartbreaking journals before some glimpse of the truth is revealed--and her search is suspenseful, poignant, and surprisingly sensual. --Dick Adler

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Not quite as interesting as her other works.......2003-03-22

The thing I found most intriguing about the Sarah Andrews series is the way the author hooks geologic themes within a mystery. For example, Tensleep centers around the drilling of an oil well, Faultline centers around seismology.

Flesh and Bones is a wonderful story, and has some of Sarah Andrew's best character development. My only disappointment was the lack of the geologic theme.

Flesh and Bones begins with a voyeuristic look into the life of a Mariam Menkin. Mariam was a baby boomer who betrayed both her sex and the sixties to marry a "nice guy." In this work, we find scattered pieces of Mariam's diary and gradually glue together the pieces of how and why she was murdered.

The book brings us on a tour of Wyoming and Colorado as Em Hansen digs up clues in Douglas, Denver and Saratoga Springs. We meet good and bad cattle ranchers and some suspicious activities at oil companies.

If you are reading the Em Hansen series for the geological themes; you can skip this one. Even in the overall development of the Em Hansen character, Only Flesh and Bones plays a less important role than the other works. If you have limited time for reading, I would read all the other novels first.

4 out of 5 stars interesting heroine.......2001-09-18

I like Em Hansen because she is smart. I also enjoyed this book. On the downside, however, some of her behavior in this book does not make human sense -- it seem outright nutty. The author herself makes clear that this is intentional on her part in the last few pages; clearly it is an emerging factor in Em's character. While I'm not sure i believe in it, it does make the books interesting.

3 out of 5 stars Circumstantial and circumspect.......2000-11-07

A mystery long on character and short on plot. The relentlessly self-deprecatory Em Hansen, again between geology jobs, returns for an even more languid run in the oil patch. Not a suspense or puzzle whodunit, these have become novels where I wonder whether Em will ever look up from her indecisions and sorrows to see the villain and dangers encroaching on her, and driving her by circumstance.

Em hardly has a case for the first half of the book, and is conflicted over accepting it from a lecherous former boss (husband to the victim) in order to help the deeply troubled teenager who is his daughter. Entertainingly diverse character elements include skewering unfriendly psychologists, hard-scrabble ranchers, a cold mother, teenage hostility, an unassertive boyfriend, many nasty men, and the clever device of dear-diary revelations. After three successful previous cases in this series, I'd think Em would be more confident and entrepreneureal by now, rather than still obsequiously begging for a job from the smarmy, patriarchal bosses around whom she still orbits.

Andrews is a skillful writer, strong on the emotional atmosphere and physical environment, but ultimately bleak. Never brisk, Andrews' stories linger on Em's exasperating diffidence, spunky whining, fumbles, and frustrating attempts to communicate and connect with opaque, mean, or joyless others. While a romantic author, Andrews never descends to romance novel cliches. After the intriguingly different TENSLEEP and its follow-ups, I found this book too easy to put down. Nevertheless, these Em Hansen novels do remain in mind long after more active stories are forgotten.

5 out of 5 stars Terrific.......1998-05-17

Josiah "JC" Menkin leaves Denver to visit his former employee, geologist Emily Hansen to plead with his former employee to help him with his teenage daughter, Cecilia. The teen has blocked out the trauma of witnessing the murder of her mother, Miriam. Em, an unemployed geologist and part time amateur sleuth reluctantly agrees to try to help Cecilia because she has always liked the teen.

Em convinces herself that in order for her to help Cecilia she needs to learn what really happened to Miriam. She begins to investigate the deceased's background and the murder. Em soon places her own life in jeopardy due to the investigation taking her to a sidebar involving cocaine smuggling. If Em is not careful, her curiosity could ultimately lead to her own death.

ONLY FLESH AND BONES is a refreshing amateur sleuth tale due to the introspective yet extroverted Em and Chandler (a refreshing charismatic criminal, who hopefully will reappear in a future Hansen novel). The novel contains a good who-done-it filled with lots of good humor (especially targeted is the psychiatry business). Sarah Andrews has developed an endearing protagonist, whose appearances are worth reading by fans of amateur sleuth mysteries.

5 out of 5 stars This is Sarah Andrew's best yet in the Em Hansen series........1998-05-12

ONLY FLESH AND BONES is the strongest book yet in the excellent series of Em Hansen mysteries written by Sarah Andrews. While it has some exciting action scenes, it is essentially a probe inside the minds of the well-developed characters, centering on Cecelia, the troubled daughter of a Denver oil tycoon who may have repressed memories that would lead to the unraveling of the mysterious death of her mother. Love, revenge, and international deals in the multi-millions combine to create a web of intrigue that Em, a petroleum geologist by training, but a private investigator by force of circumstance, must use all her analytical skills -- and sheer grit and gumption -- to unravel. While this book would provide a very gripping introduction to the Em Hansen series, I urge fellow readers who are unacquainted as yet with this scrappy, independent young woman to begin at the beginning, with TENSLEEP (1994) which introduces you to Em as a young woman mud-logger on a Wyoming oil rig, deep in a macho ambiente and getting into trouble investigating possible foul play. Then continue to A FALL IN DENVER (1996), where Em finds herself in a staff geologist job for a big oil company, and once again immersed in intrigue and foul play. And, finally, in MOTHER NATURE (1997), where Em, drawing on her geology and environmental skills, investigates the mysterious death of a powerful Senator's daughter through beautifully drawn Northern California scenes. All these volumes are informed by the fact that the author, Sarah Andrews, is herself a geologist, and clearly loves the natural beauty of the scenes she describes. I feel that this background will make ONLY FLESH AND BONES even more enjoyable, besides providing you with many hours' of great entertainment.

My husband and I loved this audio book. We have read book from patrica cronwell which references the body farm, so we decided to listen to the a story from the creator of the body farm. It was soo exciting, I did not want to get out of my car. Brilliantly written, easy to follow, excellent narration. I could feel Bill's beautiful heart and the ugliness of the world. The comic relief was hilarious. I was laughing so hard at times, I must have looked crazy.

I buy a lot more audio stories from this author.

    Book Description

The FLESH AND BONES OF IMMUNOLOGY presents a concise, accessible account immunology. This title covers all the key concepts med students need with no gaps. It can be used either as an introduction to a topic, or as a revision aid. In Section 1, The Big Picture overview gives a descriptive overview of a subject in 8pp. In the High Yield section, 50 fundamental principles underlying a subject are set out. These 50 principles are expanded into double-page spreads in the 'Fleshed Out' section where double-page explanations of the key principles clearly convey what medical students need to know. Difficult concepts are depicted by cartoon-strip illustrations, which enable rapid understanding and assimilation of information.
