I really enjoyed this book and I've already purchse more books that I'll review soon.

4 out of 5 stars this is a hoot!!!.......2007-06-08

Just a fun book about the members of the staff from Seattle Grace--
the inside look at the characters from a different angle--
a nurse and bartender from the bar across the street---
delightful summer reading!!!

2 out of 5 stars The show is better.......2007-05-30

I love the show, but if you have seen it you have no further need to read the book. It was boring and very simply written.

1 out of 5 stars shallow.......2007-05-14

This book was very shallow and seemed to appeal only to brainless teenagers. I enjoy the series and expected to enjoy the book but did not.

3 out of 5 stars Good for extreme fans of the show........2007-05-09

This is an interesting concept for a book, and if you are a huge Grey's Anatomy fanatic I'm sure you'll like it. But it's a little redundant because the two halves cover essentially the same things, just from different perspecitive. And if you've *just* rewatched Grey's as I had before reading it, it might not be that entertaining either... of course, conversly, if you haven't seen Grey's in a while, a lot of the little jokes in the book might not make sense. I think it honestly works best as the website/blog that they have it running as now, where you can read the thoughts of 'Joe' and 'Debbie' in a more current format as you watch the show.

But by all means buy the book if you love Grey's as I do, because I did enjoy it.

Book Description

Environmental disasters. Terrorist wars. Energy scarcity. Economic failure. Is this the world's inevitable fate, a downward spiral that ultimately spells the collapse of societies? Perhaps, says acclaimed author Thomas Homer-Dixon - or perhaps these crises can actually lead to renewal for ourselves and planet earth.

The Upside of Down takes the reader on a mind-stretching tour of societies' management, or mismanagement, of disasters over time. From the demise of ancient Rome to contemporary climate change, this spellbinding book analyzes what happens when multiple crises compound to cause what the author calls "synchronous failure." But, crisis doesn't have to mean total global calamity. Through catagenesis, or creative, bold reform in the wake of breakdown, it is possible to reinvent our future.

Drawing on the worlds of archeology, poetry, politics, science, and economics, The Upside of Down is certain to provoke controversy and stir imaginations across the globe. The author's wide-ranging expertise makes his insights and proposals particularly acute, as people of all nations try to grapple with how we can survive tomorrow's inevitable shocks to our global system. There is no guarantee of success, but there are ways to begin thinking about a better world, and The Upside of Down is the ideal place to start thinking.

5 out of 5 stars Eloquent and timely.......2007-09-05

In this pathbreaking work Thomas Homer-Dixon illustrates the complex and tenuous relations between the human ecology and the natural systems upon which society, markets, and structures of governance are based. He warns that human populations, and their high rates of resource consumption, are rapidly outstripping the regenerative capacity of the planet. A principal contribution of the work lies in his argument that energy flows play a central role in the maintainance of economic and socio-political stability. Homer-Dixon's exploration of the role of energy in the collapse of previous political institutions is rather novel and deserves serious consideration.
Moreover, Homer-Dixon has a rare talent for weaving advances in the natural sciences into the policy literature and communicating advanced concepts to the reader with clarity and precision. His discussions of complexity, emergent properties, and panarchy are particularly illuminating. A wonderful read.

5 out of 5 stars Reflecting in the fog.......2007-08-24

The key question in this book is raised in the very middle: "Why don't we face reality?" A major reason is that we are groping in a fog to learn what that reality is. Homer-Dixon likens our society to a driver careering along a country road in a dense fog. We can barely see what's ahead, but we're somehow confident that no mishap will befall us. We've gotten this far safely. As we drive, we're guided by the mantra of "endless economic growth". We have some idea where we've been, but remain uncertain about what lies ahead. Worse, we don't seem to care. Ignoring the warning signs indicating that all might not be well we continue along our course. In this excellent study of how our society is progressing and where it's likely going, the author clearly outlines the various options before us and what actions we can take to prevent serious disruptions.

The book is a call for preparation. Resilience is what our outlook and our policies should undertake to prevent disasters that we cannot handle. Having observed and reflected on these issues for several years, Homer-Dixon concludes that major difficulties lie ahead. We cannot avoid them - they're already here or loom in the near future. He lists some of the obvious ones: terrorism is now a part of life, climate change beyond our experience is already with us, and economic and social disruption causes have already been pinpointed. His model used as the basis of assessment is the Roman Empire. He cites three examples of what the Empire accomplished, the Colosseum, the road and aqueduct networks and the Temple of Jupiter at Baalbek, Lebanon. All these enterprises required immense amounts of energy, yet a society without engineering schools achieved them all successfully. It worked only so long as the energy was available and applied efficiently. Our schools taught us that the Romans built their imperium on slavery, but Homer-Dixon shows that concept to be false. Oxen pulled the 256 carts of material required by the Colosseum and free peasant farmers supplied the basic energy needs. The Empire collapsed only when the energy required failed. We need to understand what can be learned from that Empire offer, and Homer-Dixon demonstrates how pertinent the lessons are today.

The author's formula for assessment is EROI - Energy Return On Investment. We've been profligate in energy use, and it's future availability is a major concern of the his. "Peak oil" has been the topic of so many books and articles, it should be old news. The author notes how the petroleum industry and those dependent on it keep up a continuous barrage of denial propaganda to discourage us from believing that evident fact. The "globalised" economy was supposed to reduce the distinction between rich and poor. Not only is it having the opposite effect, but it's increasing the consumption of energy in the process. While a number of recent books stress the threats posed by environmental change, Homer-Dixon sees that as but one element in a far larger picture. He deals with a full range of pressures building up to threaten society. He likens them to tectonic stresses likely to snap unexpectedly at any time.

Unlike some books making forecasts or offering timetables of potential catastrophe, Homer-Dixon's more circumspect. He's more concerned with demonstrating that the kinds of "growth" we've experienced cannot endure. What and when surprise setbacks occur is of less importance to him than how we adjust to them. He's not addressing a small coterie of "movers and shakers" with this work His prose style is just short of that of a story-telling narrative. He means for all of us, taxpayers, policy-makers and even academics and scientists, to participate in the development and preparation of new sets of options for survival. We will all be effected by the unfolding events. While this may seem that the author's "Down" is inevitable and final, he prefixed it with "Upside" for a reason. His opening depicts the destruction of a city - San Francisco in the 1906 earthquake and fire. The city didn't collapse and die, but recovery meant a new approach to disaster planning. We must follow that example, or our collapse will be more severe. It will be global and possibly all-consuming. [stephen a. haines - Ottawa, Canada]

5 out of 5 stars Required Reading for all Who Care About the Planet.......2007-07-05

This brilliant, courageous, inspiring, multidisciplinary book unflinchingly examines the ominous, ever increasing tectonic pressures--population imbalances, energy shortages, environmental damage, global warming, and the widening gaps between rich and poor--that threaten to disrupt, if not topple, civilization.

Historical, ecological, political, economic, scientific, sociological and psychological threads are woven together in a fascinating, extremely readable analysis of the mess we are in, how we got here, what we can expect in the future, and what we can do about it.

Homer-Dixon does not provide magic bullet solutions to our problems because, in fact, none exists. He does, however, suggest four important actions, including boosting the overall resilience of our civilization, especially critical systems like energy and food distribution. Most importantly, he stresses the cultivation of the prospective mind, which includes an openness to radically new ways of thinking about our world and about how we should live our lives.

The author states that "when a social earthquake erupts--when the established order starts to crack and crumble--much depends on what happens in the period immediately following the initial shock." A mega-crisis has the potential to jolt people awake from their social conditioning, and can bring out the very worst or the very best in people. Homer-Dixon tells us to prepare for that moment, so the forces of reason, tolerance and compassion will prevail.

This book is not for those wanting to pretend that band-aide solutions from corporate-owned politicians will save us. This book is a zen-like slap in the face designed to zap denial, and awaken prospective, creative intelligence, so that bold new solutions to our planetary problems can emerge.

If I could, I would make The Upside of Down required reading for everyone on the planet. When it comes to defining the global crisis, it is by far the best of the following related books which I've recently read:

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Read.......2007-05-17

This book dispels myths about global warming and sets the stage for what may or could likely happen. It's not just about global warming, that is just one consequence of how we choose to live. I'm not sure if Thomas Homer-Dixon has it all, but his book is very well researched and referenced. It reads well and one of those books that you don't want to put down, even if that is the upside of down.

4 out of 5 stars The Upside of Down.......2007-05-07

Homer-Dixon suggests that the current state of the Western world in many ways mirrors that of Rome prior to its fall. He argues that the increasing complexities of maintaining such a society as Rome contributed greatly to its demise. Speaking to some of the complexities of today's world, he addresses such issues as globalization, desolving energy sources, socio-economic disparaties, terrorism, and others, Homer-Dixon.

The Upside of Down is a fine negotiation of the many issues involved. Homer-Dixon demonstrates the interconnectedness of global events and issues while remaining optimistic. He answers the exreme optimism of writers like Thomas Friedman without being alarmist. He has also made great efforts to make this readable. I would recommend The Upside of Down to anyone interested in globalization, global warming, energy resources and the like.

Book Description

I Love You More is a book about love presented as a children's book. It is a flip-sided book meaning it starts from both sides and ends in the middle. Like love it actually never ends, and it represents the two sides of love the giving and receiving. The book has a heartfelt story, a rhyming and rhythmic text and child-like illustrations that make it an instatnt favorite. It is a story told between a mother and child that people enjoy sharing with loved ones of all ages. "I Love You longer than the longest path ever wound. I Love You prettier than the prettiest flower ever found," says the mom. "I Love You quieter than the quietest caterpillar ever creeped. I Love You further than the furthest frog ever leaped," replies the son. The replies continue until the middle where they both insist, "I Love You More!" When our children know they are loved anything is possible. I Love You More captures the power and magic of unconditional love. The book quickly turns into a treasured game families will cherish forever. Love transends gender, age, race and religion. Love is all there is. Too often love is assumed and not expressed. Love should be seen, heard, expressed, shown, felt and more! Love heals, love empowers and love erases fear. Love is the most powerful gift we can share with one another. I Love You More is access to that gift. Enjoy.

ePregnancy Magazine May 2004 Editor's Book Pick No one understands unconditional love better than mothers. Well, maybe their children do. Disgiused as a children's book, this story is all about how much one person can love another. It's a flip-sided book that ends in the middle and starts from either side. "I love you more than," begins a mother when questioned by her curious son. "I love you more than," begins the son on the opposite side of the book when his mother asks the same question. Too often we assume our children know we love them because of all we do for them. But love needs to be said out loud, over and over again. Written by Laura Duksta, illustrated by Karen Keesler and endorsed by the two biggest hearts in the book world, Jack Canfield and Mark Victor Hansen (co-creators of the Chicken Soup series), this book is sure to find a special place on your child's bookshelf. Beautifully illustrated and easy even for new readers, it will be a favorite for years to come. After the kids deliver breakfast in bed on Mother's Day, snuggle in for a whole lot of love and see if you can out do each other in a friendly game of who loves who more. -JR

4 out of 5 stars English teacher gives this book a B.......2007-06-27

Modeled on a textbook, Eduardo Galeano's "Upside Down" is an expose of a Southern world hidden (by design and spin) from view of the affluent North. While Galeano's writing style (as always) is brilliant in its description and sarcasm, the fact that "Upside Down" reads like a textbook (complete w/tangential information/anecdotes in boxes interspersed w/in the text) detracts from its power. Topics don't flow smoothly into each other; rather, like an overworn transmission, the next topic clunks into place.

Many other reviewers didn't appreciate Galeano's "sermonizing", but I actually thought the book picked up when the author injected some of his ire and pathos, rather than abstractly reporting facts of the misery and hopelessness which many of our fellow human beings suffer on a daily basis. I felt like he was speaking on my behalf.

Defnitiely not a cheery read, but an enlightening one. Galeano speaks some hard truths that many in the North would rather not hear (The oppression/abuse of common workers; the gluttony of desire that unchecked Capitalism has created; corruption as a way of life in many parts of the world; the hyposcrisy of the "Friends of the Environment" who also happen to be the biggest polluters; et al).

4 out of 5 stars Far Left, Well Done, Worth Reading.......2007-01-12

When I bought "Upside Down: A Primer for the Looking-Glass World" I thought I was buying another of the author's books, a compendium of short stories. Instead, I received a non-fiction primer of observations about how the world works, seen from the Marxist point of view. I am not sure that the author comes from a poverty stricken background -- typically, Marxist writing comes from upper middle class, well-educated persons with bad attitudes. Galeano is obviously a fine writer, in any event, and this book is well-executed around the concept of a series of lesson plans for teaching the reader about the political and financial arrangements that prevail, and about their consequences for human life. Upside Down is well worth reading for anyone of any political persuasion who is open to being informed about how the world may look to persons in the Southern Hemispere, in the shadow of the United States. The illustrations are compellingly macabre skeletal drawings, appearing throughout the text.

2 out of 5 stars eh..........2006-05-30

My senior year i had to pick this book for an economics project... bad choice. I do like how there are boxes placed every so often with little stories/parables/facts etc. thats pretty nice i'll say, but the rest is repetitive bi***in, depressing, whining information that does interest me in the least. i think i'm better off going and reading some harry potter books.

5 out of 5 stars Powerful book..........2006-04-03

Like most of Galeano's work, this is a powerful book. This is so, because it goes to the point, with no hypocrisy and no fear. It is a description of our reality in the third world and in my case, Latin America. He is very clear regarding our worst problem: the corrupted political class that we have to suffer. These gangsters that we have in Govt' in almost every country are worst than the foreign corporations...because they are stealing from their own people..but this we forget....because our second big problem is : bad memory...
Good reading, powerful stuff...

5 out of 5 stars ashamed to be "upside down".......2004-06-04

Upside Down is a shocking and passionate documentation of the world's injustices that our "upside down" First World society has turned our back upon. This book will not merely evoke sympathy and remorse, but will leave you screaming for change. I found myself drawn especially to Galeano's dark humor and satirical, poetic style. Galeano's fiery language left me speechless. However, at times I did become glazed after reading list after list of facts. I found that the most inspirational and telling portions of the book were the rare asides and anecdotes in which individuals' stories were recounted. Galeano shows us the bleak reality that we have accepted- a reality where children toil from dawn to dusk to stay alive- a reality where power is driven by security, money and terror. This book will make you ashamed to be privileged.

    Book Description

They had the most dangerous job n the Air Force. Now Bury Us Upside Down reveals the never-before-told story of the Vietnam War’s top-secret jet-fighter outfit–an all-volunteer unit composed of truly extraordinary men who flew missions from which heroes are made.

In today’s wars, computers, targeting pods, lasers, and precision-guided bombs help FAC (forward air controller) pilots identify and destroy targets from safe distances. But in the search for enemy traffic on the elusive Ho Chi Minh Trail, always risking enemy fire, capture, and death, pilots had to drop low enough to glimpse the telltale signs of movement such as suspicious dust on treetops or disappearing tire marks on a dirt road (indicating a hidden truck park). Written by an accomplished journalist and veteran, Bury Us Upside Down is the stunning story of these brave Americans, the men who flew in the covert Operation Commando Sabre–or “Misty”–the most innovative air operation of the war.

In missions that lasted for hours, the pilots of Misty flew zigzag patterns searching for enemy troops, vehicles, and weapons, without benefit of night-vision goggles, infrared devices, or other now common sensors. What they gained in exhilarating autonomy also cost them: of 157 pilots, 34 were shot down, 3 captured, and 7 killed. Here is a firsthand account of courage and technical mastery under fire. Here, too, is a tale of forbearance and loss, including the experience of the family of a missing Misty flier–Howard K. Williams–as they learn, after twenty-three years, that his remains have been found.

Now that bombs are smart and remote sensors are even smarter, the missions that the Mistys flew would now be considered no less than suicidal. Bury Us Upside Down reminds us that for some, such dangers simply came with the territory.

5 out of 5 stars The Big Picture.......2007-10-01

This book will give you the big picture of the Vietnam conflict from the viewpoint of the cockpit, flight surgeon, intelligence officer and wives at home with timely notes on the then-current news of the war. Read it and learn the way it really was.

5 out of 5 stars Very well done.......2007-07-12

Clearly and concisely written account of a little known part of the Vietnam war. Perhaps a bit too much on the political aspects of the time but the rest of the book makes up for that.

4 out of 5 stars The story of men who were Sierra Hotel.......2007-07-06

Bury Us Upside Down is the story of the Fast Forward Air Controller (FAC) and their efforts in Route Pack 1 during the Vietnam War. These men flew the F-100F Super Sabre (a twin seated version of the Super Sabre) looking for Vietnamese targets in Route Pack 1 and guiding the bombing forces to them. This story is told from the foundation of Misty (this was the name for all of the flights that Commando Sabre [Fast FAC's in Pack 1] performed) to its replacement by F-4's later in the war. While focus is on the pilots and their exploits, Mr. Newman and Mr. Sheppard include the Intelligence section and the Flight Surgeon (a character from the word go) for the unit. In addition, the book does bring the families of the Misty's in at the appropriate points (I loved how the book opens with the burial of a Misty pilot that had been MIA, it makes the book read more as a memorial of the unit than a oral history).

In the different chapters we're introduced to the different Misty's and the exploits they perform in executing their missions. Missions for them were from 4-8 hours in length with multiple in-air refuelings. In addition to spotting ground traffic and other targets and directing the bombing, Misty's were important for directing/assisting the recovery of downed pilots (there's a great chapter on the attempted recovery of Lance Sijan along with other exciting recovery opertions) to working with other intelligence gathering operations. We also get to read about Misty's feelings about the different aircraft and their drivers (always positive about the Rescue guys in the Skyraiders and Jolly Green Giants, also for the Thud Drivers [F-105 Thunderchiefs], referencing them as the A-Team).

Rating wise this book is a SOLID 4.5 book. The exploits are well written, there's been great input provided by the former Misty's (yes, in the back they pay great tribute to the contributions from the former Misty's in developing the book). The photo's are a nice addition and the descriptions are crisp. However, this doesn't quite make it to the 5 star bar for me. Given that, Amazons rating system forces me to lower it to a 4 star book. So sorry. However this is a must read for those interested in the air war over North Vietnam.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty good read.......2007-05-16

My favorite war book is "With the Old Breed" by Eugene Sledge. Sledge's book detailed his exploits in World War II. In comparison, "Bury Us Upside Down" details the exploits of a secret fighter pilot squad during the Vietnam War. Bury Us frequently switches focus to different pilots as their tours end or they are lost in combat. You get to read about a few POWs, about the hellish experience the pilots' families back home had to endure and about the war prisons themselves. The book ends with recent investigations into crash sites in Vietnam; so, you get to see Misty's war from start to finish to post-battle events.

I much rather prefer Sledge's style since it was one man's experience versus "Bury Us Upside Down"'s squadron-based approach. Even so, it was a good read and I'd recommend it to anyone interested in war books. This was my first time reading about air combat; I'll probably buy a couple more books like this.

5 out of 5 stars Great for Beginning Readers!.......2007-04-14

This delightful classic makes a great first book for the child who is ready to read to him/herself. Its rhythmic rhymes and colorful pictures provide plenty to keep the young reader from losing interest from beginning to end. Its also an excellent book to read to very young children. You may hear them reciting the catchy rhymes to themselves. This is a book well worth buying!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful beginner book!.......2007-01-08

This is one my son's favorite books. We started reading it to him when he was about six months old. Now, he's two years old and still absolutely loves it - when we read to him and when he "reads" to us.

Like all Berenstain's beginning books, this book is a wonderful vocabulary lesson. Our son has clearly expressed his understanding of "inside," "outside," "upside down," etc. for the last six months. When our friends and family comment on his impressive comprehension we always say, "It's thanks to the Berenstains."

I read this book to my boys 30+ years ago, and am just thrilled to be buying it for a new grandson. I had no idea it was still available new. It is so cute and kids absolutely love it.

5 out of 5 stars Read this book to your child with a big cardboard box.......2005-05-09

This book has become one of the favourites of my 18-month old boy. After having read this book to him a number of times, his grandma brought out a cardboard box large enough to for my boy to fit in comfortably. He can now go inside the box and come out of the box and be very proud of himself!

5 out of 5 stars Book: What Grandmas (and Grandpas) Do Best.......2007-06-15

A friend showed me her copy of this book and I had to have one. I ended up giving it to first-time grandparents at a baby shower, and had to get another copy for myself.
I like the sentiment, the wording is cute, and the illustrations are adorable. I also love that it has what grandmas do best on one side, and what grandpas do best on the other, that was a nice surprise.

5 out of 5 stars Great book to give 1st time Grandparents.......2007-05-14

I enjoy giving this book to 1st time Grandparents. It is good for both the Grandmother and Grandfather. My husband and I have enjoyed reading this to our two grandsons. With the bright pictures and animal characters, it keeps their attention and they seemed to enjoy every minute of it.

5 out of 5 stars Two Great Children's Books in One.......2005-06-10

This fine children's book is actually two books; What Grandmas Do Best and What Grandpas Do Best. The illustrations are very colorful and show the grandparents and grandchildren doing all sorts of fun things together, such as playing hide-and-seek, dancing, going to the beach, and going on a picnic. When you're done reading one of the stories, simply turn the book over and begin the second one!

This is a terrific book for young children. It does a good job of promoting the bond between grandparents and young children, and it also gives them many fun ideas of different things they can do with grandma and grandpa. This has become a favorite of my children, and they enjoy hearing both stories before bed. Pick up this good children's book and learn about the many fun things children can do with their grandparents. Your children will thank you for it.

5 out of 5 stars Fun for Adults and Children.......2005-01-13

I just love this book, and my 5 year old daughter does, too. The book is 2 books in one. If you read it one way, you read "What Grandmas Do Best". Turn it over and upside down to read "What Grandpas Do Best". The illustrations are wonderful, but the best part is that if you read the grandma book first, the grandpa book will be very, very funny. I suppose it is funny the otherway, too. It's also a lot of fun to compare the two different books. And it provides you with an opportunity to talk to the child about how spending time with Grandma is different from spending time with Grandpa. I highly recommend this book.
