An overview of Celtic spirituality and its implications for us today.

5 out of 5 stars Celtic Spirituality at it's Best.......2007-07-28

Of all of Philips' books, this is my favorite. His gentle personality shows through this wonderful introduction to Celtic Spirituality. It is the first book that I give to people who have never read anything about the Celtic tradition. Knowing the man, himself, I can hear his voice in each chapter of this book. His scholarship is sound and his ability to explain difficult spiritual concepts in a simple, forthright manner is refreshing.

5 out of 5 stars The importance of this book cannot be underestimated; a must read........2007-05-03

This book has brought me into a closer relationship with God and fostered healing in my life. I am very grateful to Newell for his beautiful weaving of the glorious mysteries of God and the wholesome balance of Celtic Theology. If you are more interested in the institutionalized church, you may have problems with this book. But for those of us who are seeking a deeper meaning to life than the traditional church has to offer, this is the book for you. It will provide everyone with an avenue for deeper worship and possibly enable you to bring this back into your own individual church.

4 out of 5 stars Beautiful Celtic Spirituality .......2006-08-31

Newell adds to his growing collection of insightful works on all things Celtic. From the lives of the Celtic saints to the practices of those who follow the Celtic Way he inspires and informs. Very helpful stuff!

2 out of 5 stars More of an attack on Reformed Theology than anything else........2006-07-25

This book is basically an attack on Reformation Theology. It's presuppositions and themes are decidedly anti-Calvinistic. I was expecting to Listen for the Heartbeat of God, but what I heard is that Pelagius (the misunderstood heretic) was right and Augustine was wrong. The book is clearly too simplistic and does not do any justice to the Augustine and Pelagian controversy. Either Newell is actually characterizing Celtic Spirituality for what it is, or worse, he his imposing his own Pelagian paradigm under the guise of "Celtic" spirituality. Thus, either he's right and I don't like it, or he's just got an agenda--and I still don't like it.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting But Disappointing.......2006-02-01

Some of what J. Philip Newell writes I found interesting, like his chapter on Pelagius (a Celtic Christian and theologian). While I admit that I do not agree with everything that Pelagius believed I also believe that he was misrepresented and maligned by the Roman church leaders of his day. His being labelled a heretic sounds more like a political issue than a theological one. If more listening occurred there might have been more understanding.

But I found some of Newell's ideas to be historically inaccurate. For example, during the 5th century, when the Celtic Christian communities were being formed, there was only one recognized church, the Roman Catholic Church. Even though the Celtic Christian communities had there own distinctives they still saw themselves as part of the Universal Church. To say or even imply that there was a seperate Celtic Christian Church is not true. I admit that I am not an historian but I have read enough to know that this is one area where historians still argue about even using the expression "Celtic Christianity."

I seem to recall a statement that the Iona community was the last Celtic Christian community to hang on to the Celtic distinctives. In my 15 years of reading about Celtic Christianity I have never come across that idea before. I think it has more to do with his own involvement with the current Iona community than with anything historical.

Overall, the book was OK but I've read better.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book for Summarizing Evidence Supporting Christian Faith.......2007-04-23

In One Thing You Can't Do in Heaven, evangelist Mark Cahill shared a powerful question for helping lead nonbelievers to the Holy Spirit: "What do you think will happen to you when you die?" In One Heartbeat Away: Your Journey into Eternity, Mr. Cahill describes the most often cited evidence in favor of the Christian answer to that question. For someone who doesn't know the Bible and wants to learn more, this book is a good starting point for understanding the evidence in favor of Christianity. Mr. Cahill also does a good job of referencing his sources so that those who want to study the points in more detail will know where to go next. The book is short and accessible: The format is similar to what having a personal conversation with Mr. Cahill might be like.

The book opens with arguments in favor of Intelligent Design, the spiritual counter to various scientific theories such as Darwinism. He next turns his attention to evidence in favor of the Bible, including archeology and prophesies that have proven to be accurate. In chapter four, he describes experiences that people recall who have been resuscitated while dying. While most of us have heard of the tunnel of light and beings dressed in white that receive us in a friendly place, Mr. Cahill also shares stories of people who have experienced great heat, flames, and the smell of burning sulfur. Next, the book examines the Ten Commandments and helps readers to understand how far we all come in following those Godly rules. You'll come away with a strong sense that no matter how hard we try we cannot save ourselves from sin. From there, the book takes a brief look at comparative religions to show that only Christianity provides a way out of being judged for our sins. Using many conversations with nonbelievers and seekers after the Truth, Mr. Cahill recounts how we can repent, accept Jesus as our Lord and Savior, and become new beings through Christ. He also explains how we need to be witnesses for our faith.

I also found the book to be a good refresher on how to witness, something that Mr. Cahill does extremely well.

Two parts of the book really resonated with me: The stories about those who experienced hell while dying and his points about the terrible loss that occurs every time that a soul is lost to God.

Unless you are a well-informed Christian, you'll probably finds that it makes sense to read One Heartbeat Away before One Thing You Can't Do in Heaven. I highly recommend both books.

May God bless you, your family, and all you do, Mr. Cahill!

5 out of 5 stars The plain truth.......2007-03-16

Once again, Mark Cahill tells us in plain English what the Bible says about life and death in a most honest and compelling way. When you finish this 'very easy to read and follow' book you have no doubt about your journey into Eternity. Thanks Mark you really bless me

1 out of 5 stars A WASTE OF TIME AND MONEY........2007-01-13

Please don't waste your time on this unconvincing book. The author goes on and on in a manor which makes you wonder exactly who is he trying persuade? Himself? People who already agree with him? If his target audience is suppose to be the non believer or the curious then his efforts are lost and almost embarrassingly comical. This book will leave you wondering if he simply needed another book to get published for some monetary gain.

5 out of 5 stars A simple walk through life's biggest questions.......2006-11-12

Give this book to a person who is seeking truth about life's greatest questions.

Is there evidence for Darwinian Evolution or Creation?
Is there evidence for the existence of God? If so, can we know Him?
If all the religions of the world conflict on their beliefs, which one is true, if any?
Which holy book is based on truth and full of evidence?
Is there a Law standard in which we will be judged by?
What is the Law? How do I compare against it? What will happen to me if I don't measure up to it?
If I do not measure up to it, is there a way to find mercy?

Not only can you give this book to anyone seeking truth, but you should buy it so you can more effectively share the truth with others in conversation.

Mark Cahill is very good in keeping the book flowing with personal stories, wise quotes, and truth that will make you look at life different forever.

5 out of 5 stars Honestly and Factually proves Christianity and God are real........2006-08-08

I'm less than half way through this book, but as a younger born-again Christian, this book has really helped explain things for me. Each chapter challenges the things/topics that are against God such as evolutionism, Muslims, atheists, etc. The 2nd chapter disproves evolution using amazing facts and even has quotes from famous Evolutionist scholars who themselves said there was no way of a "big bang" to happen. I'd definitely have to recommend Chapter 3, entitled " The Red Silver Dollar," it shows you historically, statistically, and factually, how there HAS to be a God/creator. Great stuff. Check this out if your a new believer, or if you are still unsure.

Book Description

Run run run.

That's what twelve-year-old Annie loves to do. When she's barefoot and running, she can hear her heart beating . . . thump-THUMP, thump-THUMP. It's a rhythm that makes sense in a year when everything's shifting: Her mother is pregnant, her grandfather is forgetful, and her best friend, Max, is always moody. Everything changes over time, just like the apple Annie's been assigned to draw. But as she watches and listens, Annie begins to understand the many rhythms of life, and how she fits within them.

This fantastic book starts off with a girl named Annie running, running, running. This book is called Heartbeat, written by Sharon Creech. Heartbeat is a quick, short, easy to read realistic book formed into a really long poem.

Heartbeat takes place in a small town with a girl named Annie as the main character. Annie loves to run, but she really loves to run barefoot. Then one day, her mother was ill and Annie thought that she may die. Fortunately her mother was actually going to have a baby! Annie kept on thinking of what the baby would look like and if it would be a normal baby or not.

This book is great, and I really think you should read it because it's short and really easy to read, plus it is a Rebecca Caudill Award nominee. I was able to read this book in a day or two because it was such a great book. I really got into it!

Now there is a boy named Max and a girl named Annie they're best friends. They love running bare foot, especially by Mrs. Cobber's red barn. They also love to run in the trees and over the creeks by the red barn. Annie's mom was having a baby pretty soon. They would call it the alien baby because it would always be kicking. One day when Annie had to go to school she had art. Her teacher told them that they had to draw one apple for 100 days. So then when she got home she stared drawing one whole apple. Then the next day her grandpa took one bite from apple she was drawing yesterday it gave her a new idea. So the next 99 days she drew the apple with another bite in it. Then Max one day got asked if he could join the boys running team. He said yes but the coach said you needed running shoes. But for pratice he didn't have to wear shoe's. One day Max came over to my house and grandpa gave him something It was running shoe's. Then the next day it was the big race!
Annie went to watch Max run then at the very end of the race Mrs. Cobber came And said to Annie your mom is having the baby. So she had to leave the race but she saw that Max didn't win. But her mom did have a baby it wasn't a alien, it was a boy! Then everyone was happy. She went back to school on the hundredth day with her hundred apples. The very last one in the folder Was just a stem. Now that you know smoething about this book you can go read it!

In this poetic novel by acclaimed author Sharon Creech, Annie, a twelve-year-old girl, is trying to find out who she is. A lot happens in this short one-hundred-and-eighty-page book.

Annie's mother is pregnant, her grandfather is beginning to forget things, and her friend Max is extremely moody. Annie loves to run, and throughout the book there are "thump, thump, thump" lines where she can hear her heart beat in rhythm with her feet, which are running hard. Hence the title of the book.

In Annie's art class, the students are asked to take an apple and draw a picture of it for one hundred days. At the end of the project the students are to turn in one hundred drawings. There are poems in the book devoted to the one apple.

I love Ms. Creech's writing and admire her poetic style. The characters come alive as if you knew each one of them personally. I love reading books like that; they seem so real. HEARBEAT is a simple, fun, fast read.

Heartbeat
Book Written By: Sharon Creech

Run, run, run. That's what Annie, a kind free-thinking twelve-year-old girl, loves to do. Her friend Max, a competitive and moody thirteen-year-old boy, is now giving her a hard time until the point that she has to hurt him. What will Annie do?
Everything starts to change for young Annie. Her mom is pregnant, her Grandpa is now fragile and forgetful, and of course Max, more rude and even more moody than ever! And Annie, she suddenly starts to realize and understand the rhythms of life and how she fits with them with each step she takes. Heartbeat is a wonderful story that lets you explore the train of Annie's thoughts, emotions, and lifelong questions that she may never figure out.
I recommend this book for anyone-people of all ages-whether you're an adult or a young child. This question will keep you wondering just as it did me, "Why are we here on this earth?"

Heartbeat by Sharon Creech is written in poetry form. Footnotes give us more about the characters. The chapter's names give hints about what will happen in that chapter. Annie is the main character. The most important event is when Annie helps her mom take care of her grandfather. You should read this book because it will be good for kids to read in poem form, whether they think they like it or not. Parents can read this book to so they can practice reading poems.

And never boring. The Christian message is solid without being overdone. I could not put this book down until I made sure Cara's life turned out okay. It is a VERY clever story.

5 out of 5 stars Heartbeats Goes International.......2000-12-18

This collection of poetry, essays, and short stories by registered nurses has moved, inspired, and encouraged nurses here in the US and Canada and overseas. Many nurses, after reading this collection, have contacted me to say how these poems and stories reflect what they think and feel as they themselves are working with patients: the joys and moments of transcendance as well as the fears and frustrations. Nurses from all walks of healhcare--among them ICU nurses, homecare nurses, Hospice Nurses, OB/GYN nurses, Nursing Home nurses, office nurses--find words here that mirror what they feel during those amazing moments, the ones between the heartbeats, when they are standing by a patient's side. Death and dying are part of a nurse's day, just as surely as birth, healing, and grace are. These works speak of all aspects of caregiving, from the nurse's unique vantage point. Now in it's fourth printing, Between the Heartbeats is being translated into Japanese and a second, all-new volume is currently being assembled, a companion piece to the original volume offered here. As Frances Biley said in her review of Heartbeats in Nursing Times (3/20/96) "This book is essential. I dare you to read 'NICU' by Dana Schuster and not be moved. Beg, steal or borrow this book; if that fails, buy it."

      1 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2000-08-11

As a nurse, when I purchased this book, I thought I would find some beautiful poetry about the profession of nursing and the art of caring. Instead, I found what I think may be the problem with nurses. As I read this book, I am struck with what appears to be repressed hostility and depression by these writers. Some of the poetry is morbid. And we wonder why there are nursing shortages?

5 out of 5 stars Superb text for teaching creative approaches to caregiving........1998-05-11

Superb text for teaching creative approaches to caregiving through literature to nurses and other caregivers. I had the honor of using the book as a text book this past semester at Penn State University, Harrisburg, PA. The course explored the literature of nurses as well as traditional literature. The goal of this exploration was to redefine caring, to create new ways to teach preventive health care and nurturance, and to sensitively encourage caregivers to own their responsibility to intellectualize and write from their unique vantage point as observers of pain. Numerous and various clinical scenarios were available through the creative writing in BETWEEN THE HEARTBEATS and provided an opportunity to look at clinical situations with a refreshing perspective. My co-editor, Cortney Davis, and I have conducted many workshops but this was my first opportunity to use the book as a text for a three credit course. As might be guessed, I was personnally pleased that the book served so well as a text. Best wishes to any of you who may want to try it in your classroom.

      Book Description

The no–holds–barred first novel from Sonny Barger, author of the New York Times bestseller Hell's Angel. The mass market edition will be an ideal format for Sonny's legions of fans.

⏡tch⟋inkade thought that things were winding down. The former President of the Infidelz, the most powerful motorcycle club in Northern California, Patch has drifted east, hoping to start a new life in Arizona. He wants to forget his old life, a life where being the President of the Infidelz cost him his family. Now, he is responsible for no one but himself.

But everything changes one night in Nevada, as bad blood between members of the Infidelz and a rival club, the 2Wheelers, errupts into a firefight, littering a casino with the corpses of both club members and ordinary citizens. The newspapers call it ⁩ke Wars,⟡nd Patch knows he's needed, either to help make a peace––or win a war.

Responding to the call to duty, Patch straps on his knives and wipes the dust off his Harley, ready to cruise down the highway for what could be his final ride.

      5 out of 5 stars Dead in 5 Heartbeats.......2007-08-27

Excellent book that made me want to read more. I also purchased the second book by this author, it was outstanding as well. Mr. Barger does a great job and the main character is the kind of person we all want to be. I hope he continues to write more of these books. I would highly recommend this title as well as the second book.

5 out of 5 stars Patch Kinkade and James Bond.......2007-08-01

First let me say that I enjoyed this book and recommend it highly.

That said, this story should be viewed as a work of pure fiction. The main character has more in common with James Bond than he does with any real living person. Therefore if any citizen is looking for a window into the MC world, this book isn't for you. However if you are looking for a good fast paced read, this book is for you.

4 out of 5 stars Tell it like it is..............2007-02-02

Most people know Sonny Barger as the former leader of the infamous Oakland Chapter of the Hells Angels. I think this book brings the insight and experience that Sonny has of the world of the 1%'rs. A world that very few really understand and fewer yet have the guts to live, and die, in.

The action and story was good with a bare minimum of BS. The main
character was believable. I enjoyed reading this book and look forward
      to more of Sonny's novels.

5 out of 5 stars If you buy a book...........2005-09-14

If you buy a book written by an infamous outlaw motorcycle gang member, you can expect it to be gruesome and violent!!! People make no sense to me. They buy a book written by a violent person, obviously it is going to be about violence and their life in the gang. You can read that on the back of the book, typically. If that doesn't strike your fancy, DON'T BUY IT!!!! It's that simple. I have yet to read this book, but I am going to and I expect it to be graphic!!!!!

      1 out of 5 stars Pointless.......2005-02-23

I was excited to see a new book from everyone's favorite biker, so I had to have it. The fun stopped there. This book is pointless, except to fill the pockets of Barger.

It's a poorly camoflauged retelling of his autobiography for the first half of the book. The last half is just dumb. It involves every half-baked idea presented in the biker movies from the 1960s and 1970s and ties them into this dumb book. I almost expected to have a bit a biker werewolves by the end.

Advice: save the cost of this book and apply it towards the purchase of a motorcycle of your own. But, avoid this one.

        Book Description

Study after study has concluded that no matter how competently managed a school may be, it is the bringing together of leadership and learning that makes the difference between ordinary and extraordinary performance.  Strengthening the Heartbeat offers leaders a clear and compelling way to help their schools achieve extraordinary results.  The proven principles outlined in this book can help any school build a culture of leadership and learning.  Thomas J. Sergiovannia leading thinker in the educational leadership arenashows how a strong heartbeat is a school's best defense against the obstacles leaders face as they work to change schools for the better.  But strengthening the heartbeat of schools requires that we rethink what leadership is, how leadership works, what leadership's relationship is to learning, and why we need to practice both leadership and learning together. Filled with illustrative examples, Strengthening the Heartbeat shows how to build trust that leads to the creation of a vision and the building of a covenant that brings together principals, teachers, parents, and students to honor shared values, goals, and beliefs.  When leaders are able to strengthen the heartbeat, their schools become stronger and more resilient.  These qualities help leaders to share the burdens of leadership with others, to create collaborative cultures, and to be continuous learners.  Leadership inevitably involves change and change inevitably involves learning.  Using this book, school leaders will have the tools they need to make their schools the best they can be.

        Book Description

Since Mack Brown became head football coach at the University of Texas in 1997, the Longhorns have roared back each year into the national championship hunt. Who is this turnaround impresario, and what's his secret? Why does he consistently get the most from his student athletes? You'll find the answer in the Mack Brown philosophy of life, as revealed in this chronicle of his favorite stories and insights. It's not just about football but about winning in life--about the teamwork it takes to succeed, to work together as "one heartbeat." Brown pays tribute to the people who have taught him, from the famous to the obscure, and explains how he's learned from hard times to ascend the highest summits.

5 out of 5 stars Great book about a great Coach and great team.......2006-01-07

Coach February is now Coach January. Undefeated season, Big XII Champions, beat the "greatest team of all time" to win the National Championship, and will continue to add trophies for the great University of Texas.

        1 out of 5 stars Unfulfilled Expectations.......2002-12-13

Like the coach's career, this book was long on promise and failed to deliver the goods when it counted. I would not recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Only a handful of coaches in America fully understand..........2002-12-13

I, personally, have modeled my life after the philosophy Mack (affectionally known as "Coach February") lays out in his book. If you want to know about teamwork in the face of adversity or controversy, this is definitely the book for you. There are those critics that would point to Mack's empty trophy case (true, he has never won any kind of championship in all his years of head coach... conference or otherwise), but you have to look past the wins and losses to see what truly makes a coach successful.

My favorite chapter is entitled, "The Wind Don't Know Where the Wind is Going". His recount of the Red River Rivalry and how with maybe one or two bounces, they might have beaten Oklahoma and gone on to the National Title game where they would have beaten Miami. While he doesn't officially consider 2001 to be another National Championship for Texas, you can almost taste the trophy in the Mack Brown Center on Campus.

If you want to see how the mind of one of the greatest coaches and tradition builders of the past 50 years works, please pick up a copy of this book.

I have a copy autographed by the author as well as several players he talks about in the book.

        I give it 5 stars.
