Useful Book.......2006-03-16
This is the fourth Tim Gray book and second Jon Canfield book I have bought and read. While this book treats many of its various subjects in much less detail as Tim and Jon do in their other books I still found it useful. The section on creating digital slideshows was particularly helpful and all of the other subject matter is covered at least a summary level, providing good review and synopsis of the more detailed treatments in their other books.
Very Basic.......2005-10-25
This is an excellent book for anyone needing the basic on producing web content or printed media. However, I found it not up to the standards I have come to expect from Tim Grey. It borrows from a lot of his other work and does go into great detail on how to produce web files or printed media. It falls well short of providing content on Showing and Selling Images. While there is certainly an art to these two processes, I had hoped to see some examples of how to incorporate these into my current procedures. There really was no content on these subjects.
Great book for the beginning to intermediate photographer wanting to improve their product. Falls well short of useful content for the more advanced photographer.
Doesn't deliver the level of content and information required.......2005-10-17
This book was a huge disappointment. It's content is weak in almost all sections with much of the information available from either the Internet or you local photo lab. I didn't find it very useful at all and I'm even tempted to send it back.
The book is pretty much broken up into the three section as described in the book's title. The first part brushes over optimising your workspace - calibrating your monitor - and selecting a printer and then basic printing output. Things most people know already.
The second goes into a bit more depth regarding getting your pics on the web: registering a domain name, selecting a hosting company, etc. Information you'll find better provided by a quick search in any web search engine. However, one of my main gripes is that it reads like a magazine review of 3rd party programs you should buy to help with the web authoring in html. In fact it advises using Macromedia Dreamweaver. A program which cost more than 500 USD. Now, I understand that writing html sounds complicated to the novice but you would - honestly - be better served and save some money from learning a bit from any basic html/web authoring book(any of the O'Reilly books are well recommended) Creating a basic html web gallery is not complicated.
The final part of the book continues on the team of glossing over the subject. It briefly mentions approaching galleries and selling on the Interent. I was expecting so much more from ths section but I really didn't learn much more than I knew already.
I find it hard to believe that one of the reviews here gives this book 5 stars yet points out some of the same failings of the book as me. The book has good intentions but just doesn't deliver the level of content and information required to make really useful.
Missed my target.......2005-09-29
I really thought the book would be more geared to professional photographers and workflow, etc. with regard to digital photos. Much more space was spent on website building, which I would have expected from a website book, not a book titled as a digital photographer's guide. Did I get $30 worth of information? Probably, but I would have liked more information on digital workflow, file management, professional lab tips, etc. as a professional photographer making the move from film to digital.
More than just selling..........2005-09-23
When I found Photo Finish listed in Outdoor Photographer I thought it would help me with selling my photos. I didn't realize the amount of material it covers in helping prepare to sell. Not only does it cover the actual preparation of the photo, it will take you through a complete web site construction in order for you to place you images on the Internet. It also covers a lot of material in between. I find Photo Finish to be a resource that I return to frequently as a text in hand as I proceed with various photography projects.

Good Book for Beginners.......2005-06-01
The emphasis of this book is surface decoration techniques in general. Most of the ceramics techniques in this book you will already know something about if you have had a good ceramics class. If the topics listed are new to you, then this book is a great introduction. If you've already been exposed to them, then this book does not take you farther.
There is not a lot of specific low-temperature information, other than a few recipes (which can be quite useful). In particular, I was hoping for a book that would help me approach the effects of high temperature glazes when working with a low temperature kiln, how to modify a high temperature glaze recipe to be suitable for lower temperature work, how to do glaze calculations, etc.
For an introductory book, it is very good, with good photos, etc. I'm giving it 3 stars simply because it is only introductory.
There are more thorough treatements of surface decoration in ceramics, like Hopper's _Making Marks_. And there are better coverages of ceramics in general that include this surface decoration information, such as Peterson's _Craft & Art of Clay_, which is much larger, but can (at this writing) be purchased inexpensively from discounted booksellers listed through the Amazon page.
LOVE this beautiful and informative book........2001-08-24
I would love to take one of her college courses because Lynn Peters presents material clearly, concisely, and makes it seem like fun! The photographs are beautiful and very inspiring. The first time through I just looked at the pictures and captions. The second time through I read the lessons with pictures step-by-step. Third time, I read every word, and I know I'll refer to it again and again. I appreciated her simple, straightforward style of writing, and how she didn't bog down on details that don't make a lot of difference. If she wrote about it, it is useful info.
Best resource for learning low-fire clay decoration.......2000-06-15
This is absolutely the best resource for learning low-fire clay decoration. The book is in full-color & is packed beautiful example pieces. The author covers everything you need to know in an easy to understand manner. Surface decoration techniques include slips, terra sigillata, underglazes, glazes, maiolica, china paints, decals, & lusters. Formulas for some of these are included by volume & percentage. Seven step-by-step projects that demonstrate use of slips, sgraffito, cutouts, decals, underglazes & maiolica help you to apply what you have learned. A glossary, cone-firing range chart, & resource list are a great bonus. Numerous examples of each style are given in individual galleries throughout the book. I found them all an inspiration. Captions for each piece give information on the artist, clay type, technique & cone.
This is incredible!.......1999-06-07
Where did Lynn Peters come from, and why is this the first I have heard of her? Wow! I have been looking for this book all my career! My students next semester and every semester after that will read this book. Everything I was never exactly sure about is in this book, from maiolica to cone temperatures, and all points in between. All of us ceramics instructors owe a giant hug of thanks to Ms. Peters.
A high-fired endorsement of this low-fire instructional........1999-06-07
As a ceramics instructor at a small art school, I am constantly searching for a suitable text for my students, even going so far as to consider authoring one myself! Fortunately, the world has been spared my awkward diction, and has been blessed with this wonderful instructional text by Lynn Peters. I have been an admirer of Peters' work for some time now, and was delighted to see that she had documented her pursuits. The anecdotal theme of the text even had me reading for its literary quality alone! The photos are wonderful, and provide fantastic insight into the actual process of creating ceramic art. I highly recommend this tome to all instructors and students, and will continue to do so until Peters blesses us with my desired sequel! Kudos!

comics for older kids.......2007-05-12
This book has great ideas and suggestions. I feel it is more suited for the older kid to the adult. I liked their ideas, but there are many steps involved. Art for kids...I am not sure what age group they consider a "kid" to be. The book has great illustrations with tons of instructions.
A Great Book!.......2007-04-09
I just finished the book and it was great. It starts with the basics and logically takes one thru the creative process of making a comic strip. The combination of Roche's words and pictures drive his ponts home. You really get into the sample strip he creates in the book. I would recommend to any budding artist or cartoonist.

Customer Reviews:
Last in a wonderful series!.......2005-03-23
This book is Ngaio Marsh's last, and it is even more remarkable that she wrote it in her seventies. She still shows throughout the book that she deserves the title of "Queen of the Straight Crime Novel". In this book more than any of her others, we see her love for her adopted country of New Zealand. Her descriptions of this wild and beautiful land are wonderful. We also see her entering bravely into a "modern" setting. She discusses Diva misbehaviour and the curse of the paparazzi like a pro. In this book we have Alleyn and his wife Troy visiting a very rich man on his private island right smack off a lake in the New Zealand wilderness. The guests include this man's mistress - a world famous opera soprano, and her entourage. Of course murder occurs, and Alleyn is left to deal with it entirely on his own, since the mansion has been cut off by a storm. I missed B'rer Fox, but still the story didn't suffer. I am very sad that I have completed reading all of Miss Marsh's wonderful books. I do recommend them to anyone who loves detective stories. She is remarkably good, and it's sad that she's no longer with us.
Unusually Witty.......2001-12-06
Marsh was noted for her ability to draw memorable characters, and PHOTO FINISH is no exception, with the novel revolving around famous opera soprano "La Sommita"--an individual of such colorful bombast that her presence dominates both every one around her and the novel as a whole. Coaxed into assisting "La Sommita" when his artist wife is asked to paint her, Inspector Allen begins the case in an effort to track down a photographer who has made a career of photographing the diva in the most unflattering ways possible--and then selling the photographs to newspapers in cities where she is appearing. Upsetting for the diva--and extremely amusing for the reader--but is there actual danger afoot? There most certainly is, and once more Allen is called upon to investigate a particularly nasty murder, this time with possible Mafia connections. Some readers may spot the killer long before the inspector himself, but even so Marsh's vivid way with words makes PHOTO FINISH a vastly entertaining read.
Modern Mystery, Modern Issues.......2001-06-21
In Ngaio Marsh's "Photo Finish", Inspector Alleyn travels to Marsh's back yard -- New Zealand -- to consult with an Opera diva who is being stalked by a mysterious photographer. Unflattering photos of 'The Sommita', as she is known, have driven her -- as well as her 'patron' and his staff -- to distraction. Alleyn, along with his artist wife, Agatha Troy (who is to paint a portrait of the singer), journey to a remote island hideaway where murder -- no surprise -- quickly occurs. Marsh peppers the story with well-drawn characters: a young composer, surly Italian servants, mysterious millionaire...but frankly, I guessed who the murderer was early on, as well as the motive. The novel is still enjoyable, but other Alleyn mysteries are more exciting and more, well, 'mysterious'.
A fine finish.......2000-11-27
A wonderful mystery setting (New Zealand house party, cut off from the outside world) in one of Marsh's wittiest, best-written books (at the age of 85!). Ending was a bit disappointing, but otherwise wonderful. Her penultimate book, better than her last, Light Thickens.
Diva chews up the scenery, the score, young men, etc........2000-04-29
This book has another of those delicious, overwrought artists that are always so well-done by Marsh (she must have known many in her long career in the theater). In what's probably a take-off on the Maria Callas-Aristotle Onasis relationship, a dripping-rich magnate and a perpetually hysterical singer create the perfect setting for her genius on a remote island, where the murder occurs during (you guessed it) a storm that cuts the island off from civilization just long enough for Our Hero to figure out whodunit. Hey, that kind of thing still works for me. The improbable ending diappointed me a little, but that's hardly a criticism in the genre, and it's a darn good read anyway.

This book is for ALL horse lovers of any age........1999-11-15
This book and all others in her collection are the greatest series for horse lovers. And the books cover far more than just horses and riding. They cover the long span between horse, rider, friendship, helpfulness, and knowledge. This book is for anyone who just wants to learn something new in each book.
Can a simple picture mean so much?.......1999-01-22
I loved this book. When The Saddle club go to the race track, Lisa finds it a great opportunity to practice being a photographer, until a picture she took could solve a mystery! Will The Saddle club get caught before they could tell anyone, or will they solve another mystery at the race track.
