Book Description
A vital component in Linehan's comprehensive treatment program, this manual details precisely how to implement DBT behavioral skills training procedures. DBT Group made easy.......2007-10-06
This manual is fantastic! Not only does it provide succinct guidelines on how to teach the core Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) skills, but it stands alone quite well too. The additional text (Cognitive Behavioral Treatment of Borderline Peronality Disorder), Linehan wrote explains Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) in detail, and provides detailed discriptions of each skill, is excellent for the professional; however, for those who are suffering from BPD, and those just beginning to understand DBT, this manual provides invaluable information. Each skill is presented and exercises are provided, including group discussion hints. With minor modification this manual can be used successfully with adolescent women and men. The manual makes group preparation so much easier, and by conducting group in a didactic manner the skills are easily taught and learned. I highly recommend it for anyone touched by BPD.
Grounded Choice of DBT Workbooks.......2007-07-09
This workbook for DBT (Dialectic Behavior Therapy) is a solid and pragmatic guide for those seeking help with borderline personality disorders. Simple to use and clear to understand, this workbook provides information and exercises to ground those troubled with this disorder. Highly recommended.
DBT vital for self.......2007-05-22
This book gave me tools to understand myself better and how to approach problems, get my needs met, and to understand that life isn't always fair and people aren't always going to do what you want. You can express yourself in an assertive manner and feel ok even if another person doesn't do what you wanted or needed. To be ok in yourself, your journey and process. How to "get out of the mind" and thinking about negative thoughts and tools to cope with very serious pain both emotionally and physically.
I think if most people studied DBT, the world would be at a better place. There would be more compassion, understanding, and most of all better communication as well as coping skills.
Wonderful help and great information.......2007-05-18
This is a great resource for persons with BPD who are actively seeking to eliminate destructive behaviors and begin living a new way.
very happy with my purchase!.......2007-04-11

Book Description
Some readers may recognize their mothers as well as themselves in this book. They will also find specific suggestions for creating healthier relationships. Addressing the adult children of borderlines and the therapists who work with them, Dr. Lawson shows how to care for the waif without rescuing her, to attend to the hermit without feeding her fear, to love the queen without becoming her subject, and to live with the witch without becoming her victim.

Some insights into borderline behavior.......2007-10-05
Those who have read my other reviews will not be surprised to find that I give this book a mixed review. I found the book full of insights into my and other conditions. But there were also some things that caused me a bit of heartburn...
On page 50 the author states: "Psychotherapy for the adult borderline is a lifelong need and provides structure, insight, and management rather than cure." Note that she does not say "I think psychotherapy for the adult borderline..." Thus she avoids (I think) the pain of putting herself somewhere closer to being on the same level as a "borderline" person, and elevates her evaluation closer to being one of "objective" truth. That fact that probably most current therapists would agree with her makes this "objectification" easier. She does not seem to accept that any "cure" depends not only on the level of pathology of the patient, but also on the appropriateness of the treatment and the skill with which it is carried out. A better treatment might have a better chance of coming closer to a "cure." She provides the patient little to hope for in this direction.
On page 51 the author quotes Susan Vaughn's book "The Talking Cure" as saying that long-term therapy "reroutes the brains neurons and creates permanent changes in self-perception." This appears to allow for a contradiction to the statements on page 50, I think.
On page 95 the author says: "Borderlines who have suicidal tendencies evoke powerful feelings of guilt and fear in family members, as well as in therapists." Although this statement is probably *usually* true, it appears to put all the burden on the borderline person. "Borderlines evoke..." She could have said (but did not) that "some borderlines I have known evoked *in me* feelings of..." That would have revealed her in a more honest way but also on a more vulnerable level than she probably wanted to admit. In any interaction between a patient and a therapist there are TWO people involved. Not all therapists would *necessarily* react to such a borderline person with feelings of guilt and fear. The borderline person's fear may evoke pre-existing fears in a therapist. It may not. The therapist MAY find herself separate enough from the patient to realize the difference between them.
On page 159 the author quotes Linehan with what I assume is approval as saying that borderlines should not be viewed as different classes of people:
"It is by making these individuals different in principal from ourselves that we can demean them. And perhaps, at times, we demean them to make them different. Once we see, however, that the principles of behavior influencing normal behavior (including our own) are the same principles influencing borderline behavior, we will more easily empathize and respond compassionately to the difficulties they present us with. [p. 26]"
But immediately following this is something that I found puzzling; the author states that "Children of borderlines should not be led to believe that their experience is normal. Borderlines *sense* that they are different and deserve validation of their suffering." Well, yes, but the placement struck me as a bit incongruous coming immediately after her evoking Linehan's indication that the difference was not "fundamental".
I think it is useful for the therapist to enjoy the separation between herself and the patient, at the same time as admitting their similarity to him or her. I see too few therapists who do this.
Very important for therapists to read.......2007-09-26
A very well written book on a subject that is difficult to understand and difficult to work with in counseling.
Fantastic Insight Into Motherhood Styles.......2007-09-20
I knew my childhood was not normal. Now I know why. It makes forgiving much easier when understanding the whys and wherefores are clarified.
So much info, and so little.......2007-09-15
Unless you have a master's degree in psychology, you may find this book alarming. Suddenly you will be diagnosing everyone you know, including yourself, as a borderline.
Lawson should have dedicated a chapter to OTHER personality disorders, and mental disorders such as depression, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia, so as not to confuse us.
This is a good book for people who have been DIAGNOSED with BPD or who are struggling to deal with others who are. It's not a tool for amateurs. But it's somewhat of a good start.
Precise, Readable, and Validating.......2007-08-26
Christine Lawson writes about the mysterious and confusing mental illnesss known as Borderline Personality Disorder, or BPD. Friends and relatives who are close to BPDs are usually the only people aware of some personality imbalances. Those at work or in the community usually think otherwise; that the BPD is a "go-getter", or a high achieving individual and committed passionate community member. What makes the ups and downs of anger, self-centeredness, and reclusiveness so difficult to bear is that BPDs are so adept at hiding their dysfunction from the public. Even counselors or judges are often deceived by their intense survival skills, which are linked to some childhood trauma whereby they overcompensate for fears of abondonment. The results are broken and damaged relationships, controlling and manipulative mothers, and disallusioned children and familty members. This book is a must read for any family member coping with a mother with emotional dysfunction. It should be required reading for therapists and lawyers and judges who work in family law. Informative and well articulated, this book lays out an indepth understanding for the laymen and professional alike. Extremely helpful and a must read for persons coping with mental health involving separation, child custody, or family relationships in general.

Chapter 1.......2007-09-26
I don't know if this book will be any help to you but it was NOT to me...
My wife only read the 1st chapter, "I HATE YOU..." and then she stopped...
I think she found her answer :)
Great Insightful Book.......2007-08-29
This book was received in the requested time frame. I am grateful that I had the opportunity to get this book, read it, review it and tell others what I discovered.
A Must Read.......2007-08-28
I wish I had known about this book years ago. Knowing how to put up boundaries with a BPD is very valuable. It is right on target.
I Hate you, Don't Leave Me.......2007-06-10
When I first read this book, I had to stop after each chapter..sometimes after each paragraph to cry. At last, there were people who understood and felt what I had been going through my whole life. It was such a relief. The only down side is that the book is a bit dated.
After a few weeks, I got up the courage to show the book to my husband and suggest that he read it. After all, I'm the one with BPD. When I showed him the book, he said, "Oh, our marriage therapist gave me this book to help me understand you better." My only regret is that I didn't learn about this book sooner.
Borderline Personality Disorder.......2007-06-06
This book is a good introduction to BPD for the lay person. It is not the final word for a clinical professional. Should be read with the understanding that there are gradations of BPD, as exists among all mental illnesses.

Working with patients with borderline personality disorder.......2007-05-06
Linehan has written an easy-to-read, well organized book on working with BPD; her methods are empirically based. In one review a criticism was expressed re: her use of the female pronoun throughout the book. This didn't distract me from reading and learning; it seemed a commonsense choice on Linehan's part because, as she points out, the majority of individuals with BPD are women. The accompanying workbook is worth purchasing, also.
DBT Book.......2007-03-09
I think that this book is helpful to learn about DBT groups and how to facilitate them. We are having a study group at the agency that I work as and right now we are on Chapter 3.
THE Book.......2007-01-12
As a Borderline reading a book written for the clinician, it opened my eyes as to how others see me. It has helped me to see the areas in my mind that CAN be changed and has helped me to begin making those changes.
It is written by a 'non-writer' and is very difficult to read at times without a psych. manual ;)!! lots of $1000.00 words that are not for the layman, but if you want to know more about 'The Borderline', it will help you to learn who and what they are, and how and why they they think the way they do. For those angels among us,it teaches the greatest program on how to help us to change.
A Godsend.......2006-12-11
I've just started reading the book and have skimmed the workbook. She is, as one reviewer stated, very compassionate. I myself am a borderline individual, recently discovering it as of last week from a caring boyfriend. I went to the library and checked this book out. Never have I been blown away by how this book describes my feelings and pains so accurately. I never, for all these years, understood what was wrong with me, assuming it was everyone else. Ms. Linehan has definately helped my outlook on life. I'm very grateful for this book.
better outcomes...less burnout!.......2006-07-22
As a relatively new therapist in a community mental health setting I noticed I kept getting clients that were diagnosed with BPD. No one else seemed to want them and as the new therapist I got "stuck" with them. After many months of frustration and questioning whether or not I made the right career choice, I stumbled across DBT.
My clients are doing much better and I feel much better after reading Linehan's works and attending behavioraltech.com's conferences for training. Case Managers, Psychiatrists, and Therapists are now working together as a team and splitting is not much of an issue anymore.
The techniques are wonderful and I feel so inspired; however, the text is a little dry and I had to give myself little rewards after each chapter to get through this book.
Book Description
Every day headlines are filled with examples of narcissistic individuals in positions of power who are nothing more than impostors plundering and wrecking havoc on the lives of others. From the corporate moguls of Enron and WorldCom to the clergy leaders of the Catholic Church, we daily encounter narcissists and the self-serving systems that enable them. Helping people reclaim their lives from this sinister exploitative force is the mission behind Payson's book, The Wizard of Oz and Other Narcissists: Coping with the One-Way Relationship in Work, Love, and Family. Using simple metaphors from the American classic, The Wizard of Oz, Payson illustrates how Dorothy's journey captures all the seductive illusions and challenges that occur when we encounter the narcissist. Empowering the reader with the ABCs of unhealthy narcissism and the unique problems that occur when a person becomes involved with the narcissist, Payson gives step-by-step practical tools to identify, protect, and heal from these destructive relationships. Largely un-addressed in the psychology and self-help literature, this ground breaking book offers hope and help to those who have been drawn into these devastating relationships. She includes illuminating case studies that identify the problems that occur in the different types of relationships, from co-workers, to friends, to parents, to lovers. Readers employing these insights and skills will find new abilities to identify and protect against the narcissist's manipulations and take back control of their lives.
Customer Reviews:
Lightbulb moments!.......2007-10-05
The recent demise of a particularly confounding romantic relationship sent me looking to purchase my very first "self-help" book. Most of the time, people make sense to me. However, a year's worth of WTF? with this person really had me confused, as I'd never met someone quite so self-obsessed, empathy-free, and with a hair trigger temper if his knowledge/opinion was questioned. This book was really a lightbulb moment for me-- it really put into context not only his confounding behavior/actions, but also my inexplicable responses/behavior that were, frankly, not the me I thought I was. It's been an eye-opening experience to understand the overt narcissist/co-dependent relationship, and to see how I have been in this same dance (in subtle and not-so-subtle ways) a number of times with friends, family, and at work. Some of these relationships I could (and did) walk away from. For those that I feel I can't (family, co-workers), this really gave me the knowledge to understand the dynamic and deal with it effectively, rather than continue to get emotionally caught up in the situation and, ultimately, give the narcissistic personality the "knee-jerk" reaction that s/he thrives on.
The reviews really sold me on this book, and I certainly was not disappointed (in spite of my cynicism). Very well written, very highly recommended!
Helpful but specific.......2007-10-02
A friend was brave and wise enough to tell me she thought my adult sibling has this disorder. For years our family has been wondering about my sibling's difficult personality, focus on self, and lack of compassion for the rest of us. We have been living a life of self-blame and wondering what we did wrong. Receiving a "diagnosis" of NPD is like someone finally opening the window in a very stuffy room.
This book is good, but it makes for slightly more difficult reading than books such as the more colloquial _Help! I'm in Love with a Narcissist_. However, if you already know for sure that someone has NPD and are looking for answers to "what do I do?" instead of the "why," a book on setting boundaries might be more helpful--most books on NPD end up pointing you in that direction, anyway, but without much guidance themselves on the subject.
Unfortunately, most books on NPD (such as this one) seem to be about one or more of three relationships; an NPD: parent, boss, or spouse/significant other. It may be difficult for those of us who don't fit this mold to glean useful information from books which break down the NPD person into specific roles.
I also question the author's advice to write a letter to someone with NPD. A parent and I have been in correspondence many times with my sibling, and have always been surprised at how easily my sibling can misconstrue the written word, only to turn it around into a quick (or long) attack. Writing to my sibling is a scary endeavor. However, that's hopefully the only advice that seemed like it might backfire so severely, so most of the book is truly helpful and informative--especially if this topic/diagnosis is a new one.
Wizard of Oz, & other narcisists.......2007-08-07
Straightforwardly laid out with a crystal clear logic. I only wish I could have read this book 20 years ago. It would have saved me much heart-ache & confusion.
Narcissism, a how (not) to book.......2007-07-14
This book was a very in-depth study of the narcissistic personality disorder. It taught me how to recognize the pitfalls in dealing with narcissistic people, and how to manage your own behavior when embroiled in a personal/professional relationship with individuals suffering with this disorder.
Depends on what you are seeking.......2007-07-05
I am an adult child of a narcissistic parent. I found chapters 1 - 5 very interesting with a fascinating take on how different children within the same family can receive somewhat different abuse from a NPD parent and/or how those children respond to their individualized suffering. I found this book as helpful (but no more helpful) than the two others I had read in providing strategies to limit NPD abuse. From Chapter 6 on (roughly the last third of the book), the book was of limited use to me as it talked about having an NPD individual in an intimate love relationship or a social/professional relationship. I finished the book, but realized that for my purposes I had really finished it after Chapter 5.

BPD.......2007-10-06
As a parent of a BPD this is absolutely helpful, and was recommended by our Dr. However it can be depressing as this disorder can wreck havok on your life.
How to Live With a Borderline Without Going Crazy.......2007-10-06
As a Clinical Psychologist who works with BPD (and lived with one) I don't know of another book that is more helpful to the spouse or family of someone with Borderline Personality Disorder. It provides both reassurance (that they are not "making it all up") and helpful guidance for how to best handle their Borderline loved one, most notably the importance of "mirroring" unacceptable behavior and limit setting, while reminding them of the BPD's constant never-ending need for their own reassurance. For torn between the deepest fears of abandonment and of being controlled, BPD's are perpetual tornadoes of emotion without the ability to regulate it. So while this book isn't as helpful as others regarding the psychotherapy BPD's need (cf. psychodynamic or dialetical behavior therapy), it is the best one available to help families deal with their loved one's inability to handle strong negative emotion and their marked swings between extreme passion and semi-psychotic distortions, the most notable being the accusations that they are "controlling" the BPD loved one. The only thing I would have added would be an index, though I use the book so much I ended up making my own.
Eggshells is a great book plus another recommendation.......2007-10-01
Eggshells is a great book. It is full of helpful advice when you have a friend that suffers from BPD. It helps a layman understand the disorder and ways to protect yourself from the emotional demands of someone with BPD. It helped me a great deal understand not only the condition of BPD but also how caring for someone with BPD effected me in regards to my emotional health. Eggshells further gives assistance in recognizing certain red flags when a person with BPD is breaking down your boundaries and emotionally sucking you into their world. The book is very sympathetic to the reader and gives a very understanding view to the person that suffers from BPD. It is a one of the foundation books referred by therapist to assist people with weak boundaries or someone trying to deal with a friend that suffers from BPD. I wholeheartedly recommend the book and suggest keeping it close by as you will refer to it often.
Another book about BPD I would strongly recommend is One Way Ticket To Kansas: Caring About Someone With Borderline Personality Disorder And Finding A Healthy You. This book presents a more personal view as it addresses the emotional impact of BPD on the partner (spouse, romantic relationship, significant other). It includes the diagnosis criteria in easy to understand terms, ways to rebuild your self esteem, and gives a very touching personal story of the author that describes the impact and disorder progression of having a wife diagnosed with BPD.
In a book market with very few helpful books to explain BPD and its impact in laymans terms, these two books stand above the rest. I strongly recommend picking up copies of Stop Walking on Eggshells and One Way Ticket and keeping them close. You will find youself referring to them often for validation and advice. You may also want to look into some online support groups for people effected by having a loved one diagnosed or suspected to have BPD. Godspeed, keep you head up, and know that you will be strong enough to make the right decisions for yourself.
Stop Walking on Eggshells.......2007-09-15
The book describes how to recognize borderline personality disorder in a person for whom you care. It also gives advice in plain language on how to deal with this person.
The book that changed my life.......2007-08-24
This book was recommended to me by a therapist i was seeing for marital difficulties. When i read it, it gave me answers for 18 years of chaos in my marriage. It also gives me compassion for my husband, and resources for support groups for me. I HIGHLY recommend it for anyone feeling crazy in an interpersonal relationship, not able to understand the other person's behavior. It also helps you understand what borderline personality disorder is, since it's very complicated and each person has unique traits and different levels of each trait. What a relief to finally have some hope and some resources to help with the chaos.

Book Description
Although relatively common, Borderline Personality Disorder, or BPD, is often overlooked or misdiagnosed by therapists and clinicians and denied by those who suffer from it.
Symptoms of this tragic problem include unpredictability, violence and uncontrollable anger, deep depression and self-abuse. Parents with BPD are often unable to provide for the basic physical and emotional needs of their children. In an ironic and painful role reversal, BPD parents can actually raise children to be their caretakers. They may burden even very young children with adult responsibilities. They tend to demand unreasonable levels of emotional and material support from those least able to provide it. Plagued by irrational fears and anxieties, BPD parents often transfer feelings of self-hatred onto their children. salting the wounds inflicted by their insatiable need with constant denigration and abuse.
If you were raised by a BPD parent, your childhood was a volatile and painful time. This book, the first written specifically for children of borderline parents, offers step-by-step guidance to understanding and overcoming the lasting effects of being raised by a person suffering from this disorder. Learn what psychological criteria are necessary for a BPD diagnosis and identify the specific characteristics your parent presents. Discover specific coping strategies for dealing with issues common to children of borderline parents: low self-esteem, lack of trust, guilt, and hypersensitivity. Make the major decision whether to confront your parent about his or her condition.

Live Saver.......2007-10-03
If you were raised by parents that for what ever reason were not able to nuture you as a child and you are interested in personal growth this is the book for you! This book is my bible.
Amazing!.......2007-09-27
This book was so-o-o well written. It is very sympathetic and non-judgemental towards the children of Borderline parents - it gives them (us) hope for a better life through exercises and new ways of thinking about ourselves and the world.
So great, so compassionate!.......2007-08-08
This book was a difficult and great read. The author truly sets the tone for the adult child of a BPD parent, letting the adult child know that though the labels of BPD are difficult to swallow it allows the child to know they are not crazy nor alone. I recommend this book to all who have grown up in a home with a parent with BPD. Five stars indeed!
Extremely Helpful.......2007-06-18
I must say, it's a wonderful read for anyone with a parent with BPD or BPD - tendencies. I spent years trying to figure out what was so "off" in my childhood household - this book lays it out and laid the foundation for several "A-ha" moments. I highly recommend.

Surviving a Borderline Parent: How to Heal Your Childhood Wounds & Build Trust, Boundaries, and Self-Esteem.......2007-06-12
This book contains an incredible wealth of knowledge and understanding of both the symptoms and reactions to this type of condition. While respecting the unique circumstances surrounding an individual's challenges in coping, it provides methods for overcoming the feelings of: confusion, frustrations, hurt, neglect, and even anger, among others, thus guiding you on your individual path to healing. This is a "must read" for anyone remotely confronting such challenges in their own life, or if trying to understand those challenges being faced by a friend or loved one.
Book Description
Borderline Personality Disorder. "What the hell was that?" raged Rachel Reiland when she read the diagnosis written in her medical chart. As the 29-year old accountant, wife, and mother of young children would soon discover, it was the diagnosis that finally explained her explosive anger, manipulative behaviors, and self-destructive episodes- including bouts of anorexia, substance abuse, and sexual promiscuity. With astonishing honesty, Reiland's memoir reveals what mental illness feels like and looks like from the inside, and how healing from such a devastating disease is possible through intensive therapy and the support of loved ones.
Customer Reviews:
Bravo Rachel!.......2007-10-04
Rachel is courageously and intelligently honest as she describes the inner experience and outer impact of her battle with borderline personality disorder. As I was raised by a parent suffering from this disease, I felt my core pain touched and healed by Rachel's raw descriptions and her relentless pursuit of a healthy life and love. Bravo, Rachel!
Outstanding insight on BPD!.......2007-07-04
I thoughly enjoyed the first-person account of recovering from Borderline Personality Disorder. Rachel Reiland is a truly talented author who happened to suffer from this form of mental illness. If you have been recently diagnoised or have a loved-one who has been diagnoised with BPD, and you want to know what it is truly like to suffer with BPD... You NEED this book! I can not say enough about how much it helped me to understand this disorder. Furthermore... it's a page turner...I could hardly put it down!
Ruthlessly Honest Autobiography.......2007-06-18
For those seeking to understand the intense, chaotic, and conflicting love/hate behavior of a woman afflicted with borderline personality disorder, "Rachel's" ruthlessly revealing story is eye-opening. Admitted into a psychiatric hospital after striking her son, Rachel does not appear to be a lost cause; she is, no doubt, violent, unpredictable, and disordered, but she grasps her situation and wants to recover. A caring, insightful and loving psychiatrist chooses her and so begins her painful, frustrating journey of self-discovery and healing. But therapy is no magic elixer. Instead it tears away her facade, leaving her exposed as a frightened and traumatized child. Her behavior worsens as the psychiatrist loosens her tight reins on her emotions and cracks her protective walls. Her emotions swing wildly between her unbelievable love and her unmitigated rage toward the psychiatrist doing his best to pull her from the abyss. I don't know who was more courageous or inspiring, the psychiatrist who withstood her rages and navigated her toward mental health or Rachel, who suffered from such terrible inner turmoil, worked so hard to recover, and emerged a strong and loving woman. One of the best books I've ever read.
Best Book Ever on BPD!.......2007-05-09
I've been diagnosed with BPD for about 10 years now, and this is always the first book I recommend to people newly diagnosed and struggling to understand their disorder. I think it's the best book ever written on BPD--and better yet, it's written "from the inside", by a woman who struggled for years with severe BPD and overcame it. This is a WONDERFUL book--honest to the point of being painful, insightful, and above all, inspirational--it gives hope to all who suffer from this illness. If you suffer from BPD yourself and want to understand it better (and to know you're NOT alone)--buy this book! And if you live with someone diagnosed with BPD, please read this wonderful book--it will give you insight into this disorder you will find nowhere else!!
Thank you for writing this fantastic book, Rachel, and God bless you--you have offered hope to many, many people.
Excellent book on life inside of borderline personality disorder.......2007-04-18
This book is a heartfelt accounting of the inner struggles of the author in her recovery from borderline personality disorder. While no two individuals are the same, there are many moments where anyone who suffers from the disorder, or has a loved one who suffers from the disorder, will be able to relate to, and find hope from.
The book is truly insightful into borderline personality disorder, and provides true hope that recovery is possible. This book shows in the most candid manner that recovery and quality of life is out there, and while the road to recovery is tough, what is at the end is truly worth the journey.
I recommend this book to anyone who is seeking to understand the borderline mind.

Borderline personality disorder.......2006-11-06
Excellent resource for dealing with someone who has Borderline Personality Disorder. Great help for understanding BPD behavior and how to deal with it.
excellent resource!.......2006-09-02
this book has proven to be an excellent resource for family members and co-workers who have expressed some frustrations in their relationships with individuals with BPD. it provides helpful background information to help people understand the problem and conceptualize it. it provides realistic exercises and suggested approaches that usually seem to be very helpful in relating with individuals with BPD. if one book to provide, i prefer this book over the other eggshell book in that it is better received, more understandable, and more useful. some patients' loved ones take it and hide it for a while as they begin reading it. almost all find that eventually it is most effective when there is real cooperation between partners on learning new, more effective ways of relating. i've given out at least one dozen copies of this book and it is very popular. i believe it is well worth the price, new, given the tools and hope that it can provide.
