Dennis Damp's 9th edition is simply the best. He covers all aspects of applying, interviewing and then getting a job with the federal government and provides many useful tips and references. It is laid out in a logical manner and easy to understand. I have reviewed several books on the subject and Damp's book is by far the top of the class. I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in getting a job with the federal government and jobs counselors as a useful resource in your reference library. This book is the A to Z on the federal job search process and a must read for federal job seekers.

WOW, POWERFUL!!!
The emotions that these pictures capture are amazing. My spirit just wept as I read this book. It brings to life the story of CHRIST in a way a child can comprehend, yet an adult will read over and over.
It is amazing how the simple text can pile such truth about the story of CHRIST. It is alive and real.
These pictures are a gift... one that takes you to the time HE was crucified.
I highly recommend this book for parents, teachers to read to their class or children.

Intelligent, well-researched but nothing new here.......2007-05-12
I have mixed feelings about this book. On the one hand, I think it is one of the most intelligent liberal books on the subject of poverty in America written recently. Rank knows the scholarly literature. This is a well-researched and a well-written book. From this perspective, it is a good, solid, if not especially brillant book.
On the other hand, this book annoys me. Rank says he has a "new paradigm" of understanding poverty. This radical new innovation, that none of us have ever heard before, is that poverty is not caused by the failings of the poor, it is caused by society. Excuse me? This has been the orthodox liberal line for, lets see, at least 40 years. I find it annoying to have the same old stuff served up as if it were new.
Rank also puts alot of energy into explaining why we ought to care about poverty. His assumption is that the American people just don't give a damm. He thinks that, if he can show us why we ought to care, then we will vote for his slight modification of the same old liberal programs.
This is arrogant and pompous. Excuse me, I think the American people care very much about human suffering. If you guys had a plausible explanation for how you were going to solve poverty, I think people would vote for it. They don't vote for the liberal view, not because they are uncaring monsters, who do not give a damm about the poor, but because we tried all of this stuff, back in the 1960s, and it did not work.
Professor Rank, I have a radical suggestion for you. Read Charles Murray. You really need to catch up on the latest cuting edge stuff from the 1980s.
Strong Argument.......2006-08-17
What I really enjoyed about this book was its organization and the strength of its arguments. It begins by laying out the extent and reasons for poverty in America. Then it shifts to developing several lines of reasoning as to why poverty is such an important issue that affects us all. And finally, the last third of the book talks about what can be done to effectively address poverty. I particularly enjoyed the last chapter that talks about what an individual can do in their daily life to create a positive change with respect to reducing poverty. I definitely plan to use the arguments in this book in the future.
I also appreciated the blending of solid research evidence with the sense of social justice and values that the author brings to bear. Overall, very well done, and very important!

Mark Rank proposes many interesting ideas that attempt redefine how we think about poverty in America. Most of his ideas are solid, but my deepest concern is with the readers who gave this book 5 stars and used the word "interesting" to describe it. Did they actually read it?
This book is an unending parade of boring and repeated ideas presented in different, yet equally boring ways. I honestly beleive that this book has destroyed the thrill of musical chairs for me forever. This book could have been written in about 150 pages instead of the 250 it actually took if he simply used his original, not to mention solid, ideas. The nature of the book greatly weakened his overall argument.
Not only was the book dry, but it also seemed to fail to acknowledge the global system the US is a part of, and in particular, the role that immigration plays on poverty in the US. He talks about the US and the people in it as if they were static, but we live in a very fluid world, growing more fluid everyday, and I feel that his failure to ackowledge this fact truly hurts his overall argument.

You Mean I'm Not Crazy!.......2007-04-11
This book was so helpful that I passed it on to a friend. I have actually used advice suggested by the author and my life with my mom has improved significantly. It truly helped in that my mother has to break the apron strings and I have to take the responsiblity to grow up. If nothing else, this book puts boundaries in perspective. I am normally reserved about self-help books, but as a practicing mental health professional, this one will become one of my more recommended to clients.

I'm writing a review even though I haven't completely finished reading the book in case my review helps someone else. This book is very helpful. The author doesn't mention a lot of pscyhological terms but rather tries to help you understand why you mother is doing what she is doing and provides you with tips on how to balance the relationship so you are not constantly stressed and discouraged. She encourages you not to "divorce" your mom like some would say but tells you to think about what you want out of the relationship and then work to that goal, often by finding some common ground that you can stand on to related to your mother.
I'm sort of in the midst of some major issues with my mother (again) and the one thing I am struggling with are feeling of guilt and isolation and the "why me" mindset as it relates to my mother. Wondering why I can't have a good relationship with my mother like I see other women have with their mothers. I feel further isolated since I don't have a sister or an aunt and my grandmother has passed so there's not even another woman in my family that I can share my feelings with to help me feel better. This book provides lots of examples that help you realize you are not alone and that it is possible to not be super close to your mother and still be a good person.
There is one thing I struggled with that the author says. She says that your mother isn't out to hurt you and she even pointed to examples of child abuse and extreme cases where mothers have killed their children and she still says that those mothers weren't out to hurt their children and that their actions were about their issues and so forth (please read the book for the exact wording on this topic). Anyway I disagreed with that because I think sometimes mothers can wish to hurt their children, consiously and unconsciously I think sometimes mothers are jealous, resentful, unhappy with their own lives and just mean and that they do want to hurt their children. Do I think they may regret it after the fallout of their actions? Yes. Do I think they also have times or moments where they love their children? Yes. But I just felt like when the author said they don't want to hurt you it was almost excusing the behavior and saying that your mother really loves you no matter what and that any bad thing is really not to hurt you and I just don't think I believe that...but that is my opinion.
Let me say again that the book is wonderful and offers great insight in dealing with a problem that can make you feel very sad and lonely. It's worth it if you are having an issue...perhaps you can find some peace in the pages of this book.
I have read many mother/daughter books.......2006-07-09
but this one is the best so far, even topping Deborah Tannen's helpful one ("You're Wearing That?"). What I especially found so helpful about this book is that it isn't laden with anecdotes. Instead Denise McGregor has insightful explanations for mothers' motivations, daughters' responses, and how to understand and heal these areas. She also has a deeply spiritual ( not religious) undertone that I found very calming and peaceful. Denise is an excellent writer and knows how to explain even the most complicated issues in such a way that I felt I could understand my relationship with my mom in a whole new way. For so many years I felt alone, and that I was the only one feeling so much guilt when it came to my mom, and Denise's book is so enlightening. I realize that not only am I not a freak but that it is a really common issue with most mothers and daughters, and Denise offers beautiful, excellent advice on how to deal positively and release guilt.
I can not stress how great this book is. Like I said, I have read many many many, and now I feel like this is it. I do not have to read any more mother daughter books ever again. This one book has set me on the road to healing and improving my relationship with my mom. I hope it can help you too.
A great resource for daughters AND their mothers.......1999-05-11
This book provided a lot of helpful information for mending estranged mother-daughter relationships. It also offers suggestions for improving existing relationships. Mother-daughter relationships are very complicated and the guidelines outlined in Ms. McGregor's book assist with shaping the relationship into something that is appreciated by both the mother and the daughter.

I had the great pleasure to attend one of Ms. McGregor's seminars and found her not only to be a warm and caring person but a tremendous source of strength and knowledge that has helped me mend my relationship with my mother. For you men out there, if you care about the women in your lives, make the emotional investment and get a copy for your mothers, sisters, daughters and wives! An absolute winner!! Richard Nixon. The mere mention of the name is enough to inspire some of the most mean-spirited, gut reactions. On the other hand, as Mr. Wicker quotes a Nixon associate in his book "you get back out of life what you plow into it." For all of his dark, quirky, idiosyncracies, RN, was in many ways "One of Us."
Tom Wicker paints about as sympathetic and generous portrait of the late 37th president as you are going to get from a liberal New York Times reporter. The book is not without its snide and petty moments. Wicker, for whatever personal or professional reasons, has a field day down-playing the communist infiltration of the government in the Truman administration and describing, rather underwhelmingly, the high drama of the Alger Hiss case.
The key quote, a quote in which the entire premise of the book rests upon, comes from none other than Henry A. Kissinger who poignantly asks "What would he (RN)have been like had somebody loved him?" At this point in the book, it all comes together: Here was an enormously gifted man who, because of his inner doubts and insecurities, destroyed himself from within. Missing, unfortunately, was RN's remarkable comeback to respectability. This book retains a slight flavor of the animous that "establishment liberals" had for the man who came from a decidely lower-middle class/working-poor background; a man who was a self-made man in every sense of the word.
At times Wicker's attempt at amateur psychologist is agonizing. How can he possibly know what he knows re: RN's motivations, thoughts, desires, secrets, fears, etc. But to be fair, The Old Man was so uncomfortable with himself, so quirky and ill-at-ease "an introvert in an extrovert's" world, as he described himself, perhaps the only way to get your head around the man is to put him on the couch. I think that Fawn Brodie, who wrote a pscyo-babble biography of RN and Thomas Jefferson was hardly a source to be consulted. Notwithstanding, comments from Nixon relatives Lucille Parsons, Jessamyn and Merle West are highly insightful. It is, however, very unfortunate that Wicker is not more generous in his treatment of RN's parents, particularly his Quaker mother and the influence he had on her life. Father Frank Nixon is made to look like nothing more than a loud-mouth lout; Hannah is portrayed as this taciturn, cold, unfeeling mother who could not find it in her heart to express emotion. In short, I think Wicker has been watching too much Oprah, because not everyone feels the need to show their soul bare-naked to the world. Especially those of RN's generation and ethnic/religous group. Outward signs of affection were not the norm. Yet Wicker, instead of appreciating the diversity of the human condition, chooses to pathologize Mrs. Nixon's behavior (he does a good job on Pat in this regard as well).
Jonathan Aitken's biography Nixon: A Life gives a fuller, more balanced and nuanced portrait of the impact pacifist Hannah Nixon had on her precocious son, as well as a better balanced account of who Frank Nixon was and why he was the way he was. Wicker's analyses of Nixon's parents, and of Nixon himself, are too simplistic and, at times, just plain mean.
a tough book to rate.......2005-10-28
Over the last few years I've read 35 presidential biographies, usually using Amazon readers as my guide to picking the best available choice. It's difficult to find a balanced Nixon biography, and I eventually chose Wicker's One of Us, but rating this book is difficult too. First, it's more of a political biography than a retelling of Nixon's life, but Nixon was so driven by politics that this decision doesn't seem to leave much out. Second, Wicker is more interested in describing who Nixon was than he is in telling a straight narrative. Once, he has given the reader the complete picture of Nixon's psyche, Wicker just stops writing. He leaves out Watergate and the last year and a half of Nixon's presidency. I don't know if Wicker felt too close to Watergate or if he just got tired of writing. Third, there have to be more editorial oversights in this book than just about any serious biography I've read. Towards the end of the book, I had the feeling that Wicker or the editor just turned on the spell checker but didn't bother to make sure the correct words were used.
Despite these major criticisms there is a great deal of merit to One of Us. Although there is a fair amount of psycho-babble, Nixon is certainly in the top 5 presidents as far as needing to be explained from a psychological perspective. And Wicker absolutely nails Nixon's personality. The reader gets the absolutely driven, intelligent, paranoia, manipulative Nixon who has a realpolitik approach to ethics and values.
Nixon was the first president who I really grew up in terms of a broad awareness of the issues of the times. Wicker does a great job of capturing America's concerns. We were obsessed with finding communists under every rock. Civil rights and race rights led to code words like law and order, Students got divided into good kids or rock throwers with little in between. With each of these issues Nixon found a way to play to his constituency, "the silent majority", in an often manipulative way that played more to television sound bites than solutions.
Finally, for the Nixon skeptics out there, this book deals well with Nixon's supposed skills at international relations. It shows how the team of Nixon and Kissinger working together while ignoring the advice and consent of the Congress, State Department, or even the CIA led to serious long-term problems in Iraq, Iran, Syria, Cambodia, with missile reduction treaties, and on and on. Wicker's analysis is difficult to dispute, and it is a powerful argument against the sort of power diplomacy used by Nixon and his ilk.

One of us??? Well, I guess -- if you consider yourself part of a group of square, sex-hating, self-deluded, egomaniacal bores who refer to themselves in the third-person. Actually, that would be unfair to all the self-deluded, sex-hating squares in our midst. 'Cause Richard Nixon was part of nothing other than the squalor of his own mind. When he looked out at the world, what he saw was the inside of his own eyeballs.
Tom Wicker -- the quintessent(is that a word?) liberal panty-waste gets two stars here because of the unintentional humor of the tome. (It is almost 800 pages of tome.) But the humor is more than off-set by the outrage of the book. For it is a historical lie. All the so-called "progressive" achievements of Nixon's time (the EPA, expansion of voting rights and other minority protections, worker safety rules, etc) were accomplished IN SPITE of Dick Nixon, not because of him. They were gifts of that time because of the Congress, the media, and mostly -- oh how far we've come -- because the American people were then in much better touch with their own interests. Nixon, to quote Ed Harris as E.Howard Hunt -- was the darkness reaching out to the darkness, and our own very dark time is still haunted by the vicious hatred of all democratic values unleased by the Whittier Vampire. George W. Bush is much more the child of Nixon, than of his own father.
An excellent and concise account of Nixon's Vietnam War.......2003-11-11
Chapter 14, pp 569-614 of "One of Us" is probably the best account of Richard Nixon's Vietnam War policy that I have read. Most Vietnam books tend to skimp on the latter years of the war, when it was winding down. In general this book is very even-handed and at times surprisingly sympathetic. However, Wicker is also honestly frank in his criticisms of Nixon's Vietnam policy and other aspects of his foreign policy.

Put on your reading glasses and your back-brace! This updated volume (4th edition) is huge, heavy, and filled to the brim with small print and b/w pictures...but those are necessary evils considering the breadth of information covered in this book. I wondered if the $35 price would be justified and I suppose it is. There may be easier ways (e.g., on-line) to find information about individual tokens, private merchant coins and cards, commemorative US coins, campaign tokens, as well as territorial gold and silver, but for serious collectors of early American exonumia or anyone trying to identify or establish the value of an unusual US coin, this volume is indispensable. I only wish my eyes were better! I'm glad I bought the book. Beyond its usefulness as a field guide, it is chock-full of interesting historical information and trivia, making it a very cool resource for anyone curious about how commerce, politics, and territorial expansion took place in colonial and post-colonial times. It also covers the Civil War era and after, up until the turn of the 20th century. Collecting these rare coins can be a gratifying hobby. Many of the coins are quite affordable and all are interesting snapshots of the mindset of our forebears. Also, by using this guide one might discover that the weird coin or faded store card found in Grandpa's sock drawer is a unique treasure which could yield big "bucks" (an exonumia term: buckskins were used as currency in the colonial period) at the next coin show or in an online auction. I gave the book 4 stars only because there are no color pictures, even though the details of coins are often easier to see in black and white. If there were color plates, however, I might not have been able to afford to buy this book.

Yup, it's there...all the information you could possibly need...err, use...uhh, all you have to do is FIND IT. This could have easily been broken down into 30-40 volumes on seperate subjects!

Very interesting historically informative.......2005-09-19
The author paints a vivid description of the differences in the OCS/TBS training between his era and the current one. It was excellent in the historical persepective. However, I was a bit disappointed at the lack of specificity in the current standards and practices. I had hoped to gain moe insight in the how the officers leading today's Marines are selected and trained.
However, for those interested in the rich culture and history of the US Marine Corps - you won't be disappointed in this book.
Informative look at OCS and beyond.......2005-06-06
To start, this rating is actually two grades averaged: purely as a book, One Of Us gets three stars. The writing is directed at facts, not style, and it's recounting a process rather than a story, since the author. There are certainly great moments, especially where Ruppert interviews his old OCS classmates. But there are also horrifically boring moments, like the chapter analyzing demographic and survey data on OCS classes, and most of the writing is simply average both in style and in ability to hold interest.
As an information resource, however, this book is second to none and gets five solid stars. It is first and foremost a thorough examination of what today's OCS is like, the process and stress candidates must undergo, and excellent preparation for anyone planning to attend. The information Ruppert gives on TBS is also useful, though less specific. Anyone reading this will instantly have great insight into how Marine officers are trained and what those trainees should expect, if not a kind of cheat sheet on how to act and hopefully succeed. In a way, Ruppert is actually probably doing OCS a service in its mission of selection: anyone thinking of going to OCS will get such a solid picture of the experience that it'll probably either scare them far away or motivate them for the challenge.
The bottom line is that this book should be required for anyone interested in becoming a Marine officer, but others should save the time and money. For those looking for a great narrative of Marine training, read Thomas Ricks' outstanding book Making The Corps, a book Ruppert actually mentions several times.
Cant find it at stores.......2005-01-12
First let me say that i am only 14, turning 15 on the 18th, but that i am already preparing to become ean officer in the marine corps. I have already sent my information to the naval academy so they will monitor my grades and stuff, and i am doing my best pyhysicaly and mentally to prepare for what is to come. I usually read a book from the library and then review it, but the library doesnt have it. Might have something to do with the 50 dollar price tag, but regardless, they dont carry it. And being only fourteen i dont have a credit card, so i cant order this book online. I need to ask my dad to but it for me. So i probably wont read tis book for a long time.
But based on what ive been able to gather from all of the past reviews is that you learn how to lead marines fdrom this book. OR at least youre ready for OCS. So im gonna try to find it, even though i wont need it for like ten years,( 3.5 years of high school, 4 years of College, hopefully the naval academy, and 2 years on my mission for my church) But when i need this book, i will have it so instilled in my memory that i am confident it will have been worth the fifty bucks,and all the time im gonna use to find a copy.
Great Book on Marine Corp OCS and TBS.......2005-01-12
I was curious about OCS and TBS and bought this book to get some info. The book is well written. It compares OCS now to OCS back in the 50s. The information in the book is valuable. I have learned so much from reading this book about being a Marine Corp. Officer. I highly recommend this book to those who are thinking of joining up or have family or friends who have. It is important to learn what these men and women go through for almost a year in training to be who they are.

Dreams To Heal........2005-06-02
These two doctors have written a great 'self-help' book of dealing with grief. The pain of separation causes the person who's grieving to exist in an insular world of grief which has to be worked through in stages.
Suffering is a natural consequence of living in the real world today, and losing someone close makes it even worse. These rare and special kinds of dreams associated with the grieving process can be healing (from the subconscious surfacing during one's sleep) but living through them can be a scary experience. Two of mine came true.
The main types include 'visitation,' 'message,' 'reassurance,' 'trauma,' and 'faith.' However, there is another which affected me last month when my grandson was killed in a car accident. It was in the form of a premonition (called precognitive dreams), where you are made aware of an event before it actually occurs. They are prophetic: first, Tristan's death,which I refused to believe, and then one about my bank account being emptied with a card. It was but not exactly as the dream led me to believe it might happen, but it did anyway.
Have you experience deja vu, a feeling we have been in a certain place or experienced a certain event before; we have already 'been there' in a dream? In your sleep, you lose the basic law of free will and the subconscious sometimes shows you what may happen so that maybe it could be prevented. There are instances given in this book about how some actually saved the life of the person dreaming.
If you feel like God has deserted you, when something like an unexpected death happens, it can be acceptable to work things out by going to nature, art and music for consolation. I've had to use all three lately. Faith comes in many forms, and you need community support (which I lacked here at these apartments as the Baptist preacher assistant manager did not even say he was sorry, nor did he list the death for others to see). Even the noted theologian, C. S. Lewis, questioned his faith in God when his first wife died (read the book A GRIEF OBSERVED), and a miracle came to him in the person of an American divorcee named Joy for which he wrote an ODE TO JOY.
"If we could only know 'for sure' that our loved ones continue to exist in a peaceful realm beyond this earthly one, then the pain of separation would be a lot more bearable." Message dreams are warnings we should all accept, as being from a loving God or the dearly departed.

Dreaming of our lost loved ones is a gift. A gift that most of us don't quite know how to accept or to grasp. Reading Grief Dreams brought to me a welcomed knowledge of understanding, not only as to why I dream about my daughter, Jackie, but also why/how she uses my dreams to effectively communicate with me.
When I submitted my grief dream to TJ, so many months ago, I never expected the comfort and peace I would gain while finally reading her published pages. So please, if you are lost in the midst of grief, give yourself the benefit of what this inspirational book has to offer.

I bought this book on the recommendation of a grief counselor. It has helped me enormously in healing from a tremendous personal loss. The anecdotal accounts are valuable tools for anyone dealing with the death of a loved one, as we draw parallels in our own grief dreams. Understanding the symbolism behind the images of our dreams moves us forward through the grief process toward acceptance. I highly recommend this powerful tool.
Healing Dreams.......2005-03-15
I bought this book because I saw the authors at a bookstore. What the authors said made a lot of sense; that dreaming is universal, and that we process grief through dreams. Grief Dreams goes over the grieving process in general (which is real helpful) and has a way of normalizing the process. Then the book breaks down dreaming into "types." The whole book provided me with a way to understand my losses--I felt it was written in a way that made me feel the authors cared about me.
Long Awaited .......2005-02-20
This book is just what I was looking for. I had been having dreams like this and now see what they actually are. It is a relief to know that this happens to others and that these are more than "dreams". They are messages and visits and it does help us understand that this is the way life works. We are all going to die and we are all going to lose someone we love. It brings me comfort to know that we can still communicate on a spiritual level and be together. I miss my father immensely, but I know that in my dreams he may come and hug me or just smile. And he is still there...and will always be. I am not as lonely , just like others in the book mention.
The book is easy to read with personal stories mixed in with factual reesearch. Anyone who lost someone should read it!
