Answers for Girls.......2007-10-06
Ordered for 11 yr old granddaughter.....absolutely marvelous...well illustrated and answers questions girls "worry" about....very,very informative and also makes girls "think"!
Amazing book for youg girls!.......2007-09-30
I got the book AmericanGirl:The Care & Keeping of You for my 9 year old daughter, Jordan, and I couldn't have been happier. It covers the basics but does not get into details that are inappropriate for her age. It answered a lot of questions for her about what to expect as she gets older, and started a lot of conversations she might have been to embarassed to ask before.
Sensitively written, excellent topic choices.......2007-09-17
I bought this book for my 8-year old daughter. She had noticed "development" in her classmates (most are 9 or 10 years old) and gymnastics teammates (up to 12 years old) and had so many questions. We have a very open and frank relationship, and it was great to have this book as a resource. She is an excellent reader and likes to learn on her own, then check back with me about questions raised in her books. I read the book first and found it sensitively written, with a good range of topics. At first I thought she wouldn't be interested in the health and skin care sections, but those were what she read first. The book doesn't address "where babies come from" but I think that is okay because my daughter is just concerned with getting to Teen before worrying about getting to Woman. She read the book in two days and she was able to pinpoint things that were worrying her using the clear language from the book so that we could talk through them. She tells me that she feels more confident when discussion among her classmates turns to "growing up" topics. I will definitely be buying more books in the American Girl series.
Great For Growing Girls.......2007-09-16
My daughter is 7 and has been asking a lot of questions about her body. Though I think I've done a pretty good job of explaining things as best I can, this book was a great help. There are drawn and colored illustrations that you would expect from a children's book along with explanations and tips to follow. It was even helpful for adults as well. There is a section on healthy eating, bathing, puberty, menstration, etc. This book did a really good job of explaining the changes of a girls body leading up to puberty and adult hood without going into sexuality. I really liked being able to talk with my daughter about her body without having to get into the details of sex. I hope they have a book like this for when those questions start in.
A very happy mom and daughter.
My daughter wouldn't put it down........2007-09-13
My 9 yr old daughter got this from her Grandma for Christmas. She sat and read it all morning during all the present-opening! She has read it numerous times since, has asked me something while flipping to that particular page she's talking about, and has really made what it teaches her a part of her by quoting parts of it to me when I talk about body care. I had heard from everyone who had this book that it's a must-buy book for young girls-it's true! It allowed her to feel like she had some control about how much she wanted to learn. She now has something to talk to me about rather than just listening to what I have to say about growing up.

A must have for the nursing mom who favors natural remedies.......2005-08-09
I'm so glad to have this resource as a part of my library. After nursing my first child for 20 months and my second child for 27 months and counting, this is something I should have bought as soon as it was published. There's a quick index in the back with each herb listed alphabetically which really came in handy last weekend when I needed to verify the safety of an herbal tea for treating cold and flu symptoms. Don't wait, add it to your collection today!

The Nursing Mother's Herbal is one of the books I'd recommend to every woman who is considering becoming a mother or who is already pregnant. This book gives you a wealth of information and I think it is one of the most interesting books I've ever read on breastfeeding and postpartum issues.
Sheila also encourages you to find the support you need. She gives excellent advice on how to deal with every aspect of breastfeeding and also focuses on the most intricate details of every positive and negative situation that could occur. There are recipes for various "galactogogue teas" to encourage a good milk supply. By reading this book you can also find out interesting things about why you should not use aloe vera gel and why you might want to use tea rinses or poultices made from herbs for their skin healing properties.
Other features include:
An extensive list of organizations and websites
A Plant Safety Table (they also include information on herbs that will help or decrease milk production)
Detailed Information about Herbs like fennel, fenugreek, hops and milk thistle.
"The Nursing Mother's Herbal" is simply fascinating and I can highly recommend it to mothers who are preparing for breastfeeding or who are considering their options.

A wonderful resource for moms on natural remedies!.......2004-06-02
Taking prescription drugs or herbs while breastfeeding can be risky unless moms have good information about how it may affect her breastmilk and her baby.
Fortunately, books like Thomas Hale's Medications and Mothers Milk (2004 edition now available), and The Nursing Mother's Herbal by Sheila Humphrey can help nursing moms navigate pharmaceutical and natural remedies while breastfeeding. Moms who don't know anything about herbs as well as moms who have used them to treat common ailments will find The Nursing Mother's Herbal helpful.
Unlike the technical Hale book, which deals with prescription drugs (most La Leche League chapters own and can offer information from this book to share with your health care provider), The Nursing Mother's Herbal is an easy-to-read book about breastfeeding, herbs and dietary supplements.
The book's conversational style is backed up by serious, solid research. Humphrey, an IBCLC-certified lactation consultant, has studied botany at the college level. She is also an ob-gyn nurse and La Leche League leader. Her information sources for the book include her husband, a PhD botanist specializing in the study of medicinal plant pharmacology and ethnobotany; a long list of herb experts, including Andrew Weil; and breastfeeding experts, including Dr. Jack Newman and members of La Leche League.
For new moms, The Nursing Mother's Herbal devotes the first three chapters entirely to breastfeeding. It is an excellent explanation of all the factors that play into a positive nursing experience for moms and babies. Humphrey explains why breastmilk is the superior infant food, then she explores where to find breastfeeding information and support. Finally, she offers a peek into the amazing nursing mother-baby dyad.
For moms new to herbs, the following chapter is dedicated to explaining herbs and herbal medicines: What's a tincture? What is the difference between a decoction and a liquid extract? How do I know I am getting a quality herbal product?
Humphrey inserts many warnings throughout the initial chapter on herbs, including why it's important to make sure you have the right plant if gathering herbs from a garden or from the wild (some toxic plants look very similar to herbs), so this chapter is a critical read before moving onto the rest of the book. Many herbs interact with prescription drugs, so it is important to tell your health care provider about any herbs or nutritional supplements you take. Humphrey offers extra safety measures to apply when using herbs while breastfeeding, including: "When breastfeeding, it may be best to avoid those herbs that can cause side effects even in small doses; instead find herbs with a wider margin of safety."
Even so, she writes: "Despite all the concerns I've brought up here, please do not get the impression that herbs are dangerous. As a group, herbs are probably safer than most types of other medications."
The following chapters offer specific herbal remedies to various ailments or situations breastfeeding mothers may encounter, such as herbs related to weaning. Information-packed appendices at the end of the book provide further resources to explore as well as plant safety charts.
As with any book related to health, it is not a substitute for professional medical advice. However, The Nursing Mother's Herbal is a wonderful resource for moms to inform themselves about natural remedies and to gather information to share with their physicians about alternative treatments to common health problems. --Dana Anderson-Villamagna
A fact filled, superbly organized instructional.......2004-04-05
Sheila Humphry is a registered ob-gyn nurse and La Leche League Leader. In writing The Nursing Mother's Herbal, she draws upon her many years of experience and expertise to provide a health-conscious guide concerning the effects of herbs, dietary supplements, and other natural products upon nursing women and their babies. A fact filled, superbly organized instructional and reference guide which presents reliable and comprehensive information in down-to-earth terms, The Nursing Mother's Herbal is very highly recommended reading for all breast-feeding mothers.
The book we've been waiting for.......2004-03-30
As a La Leche League Leader and Lactation Consultant, I have fielded many questions from nursing mothers regarding herbs over the last years. The biggest problem we've all faced is that there has been little to no information regarding herbs and breastfeeding, making it difficult for counselors to guide mothers in making decisions on what is best for them and their babies. This new book is a welcome light into a dark void.
"The Nursing Mother's Herbal" is written to be accessible to any mother with questions about breastfeeding and/or herbs. For the uninitiated, there is an excellent chapter explaining the historical use of herbs, the place of herbs in today's society, safety issues and preparation methods. Another chapter covers related "alternatives" such as homeopathy and Traditional Chinese Medicine.
Rather than go the easy route of just presenting her professional herb analysis, Sheila chose to give her book context and background in breastfeeding to ensure that readers would have good, current information on breastfeeding management before making the decision to add an herb for a particular situation. This is especially important given that herb use is often based on word-of-mouth advice passed between mothers and friends who may not have an accurate understanding of the big picture of a mother's situation and who may unwittingly be steering mom the wrong direction.
One of the book's most valuable features is a summary table in the appendix on plant safety. Sheila has carefully examined the research as well as anecdotal experience with a large list of herbs, then weighed it all together and rated each herb on a 5-letter scale. These ratings provide guides to which herbs are safest for self-use, which herbs are best considered only after professional evaluation, and which herbs perhaps should not be used at all.
In addition to the above table, another appendix is devoted to an in-depth analysis of the most well-known galactogogue herbs popular today. While there is already a chapter devoted soley to milk supply concerns, this compilation provides more details of resources, experience and anecdotes to guide both mothers and professionals in making appropriate, rather than blindly hopeful, choices for increasing milk supply.
I greatly appreciate the truly expert analysis of specific herbs for use during breastfeeding. It is obvious that Sheila is well-grounded in both the science and art of herbs, as well as medicine and lactation. As a result, she has a rare ability to see perceive, address, and bring balance to multiple issues that often arise in herb discussions, especially with health care providers. "The Nursing Mother's Herbal" is the book that we've all been waiting for.

Download Description
Disease and health, like circumstances, are rooted in thought. Sickly thoughts will express themselves through a sickly body. Thoughts of fear have been known to kill a man as speedily as a bullet and they are continually killing thousands of people just as surely though less rapidly. The people who live in fear of disease are the people who get it. Anxiety quickly demoralizes the whole body, and lays it open to the entrance of disease; while impure thoughts, even if not physically indulged, will sooner shatter the nervous system.

Thinking man.......2007-10-07
I have read many of James Allen's sermons. Some have been printed into small books. "As A Man Thinketh" is one of his classics. It is a short book. It can be read in only a few hours. It is such a profound essay on human nature. Basically, if you think good thoughts, then you will become a good person, and if you think bad thoughts, then you will become a criminal. You have the control over what you will think. Your actions will follow whatever thoughts you have chosen to put in your head. The book goes into more detail and gives well reasoned arguments for this theory. As A Man Thinketh would be a good required reading assignment for a college philosophy class, but I would not recommend it for reading on the train going to work.
One powerful message.......2007-08-23
I felt that the book had a powerful message and it was quite inspiring. Having first read Covey's Seven Habits this book reinforced the paradigm shift to being my own life's creator.
I however, did not agree with Allens opinions about sickness and health. How can he claim that sickness would grow out of an impure mind? It's absurd.
Very very very good book .......2007-08-03
No one realizes how much affect that their thoughts can have upon their entire life. This book shows the direct connection between how you think and what happens in your life. Allen lays out the idea that when you are thinking about something repeatedly, it will lead to an action. This action leads to a new habit and the new habit to a new character. In the big picture, your thoughts make you who you are. That is why you need to change the way that you think about things. It can turn your life around!
You Don't Need to Read Any Other Self Help Book!.......2007-07-31
I have one of the most extensive libraries of self help, psychology and self-improvement material on this planet. And I continue to read more each day.
I just finished a copy of As A Man Thinketh given to me by a friend. I never read it before, even though it is the original self help book. After reading it I can only say that if you only read this book, you have all you need.
An annual "must read".......2007-07-16
I bought 5 of these little books because I wanted to share them with friends. This is a book I am going to read once a year for the rest of my life and I hope as my children get older they will see the value in it too. It helps to put your head in the right place - awesome book, I loved it.

Excellent Insight.......2007-06-29
For anyone with an open and flexible mind, its a good book to glance at for daily insight or general thought expansion. I highly recomend it.
Just like a fortune cookie.......2007-05-14
Somewhat confusing, and very much like a fortune cookie. Would have been better if it came wrapped in a giant cookie. Would reccommend passing on this even if you like Bruce Lee.
Eye opening........2007-01-09
I have owned this book for several years now, and still flip through it from time to time. More then anything else, this is a collection of Bruce's random thoughts and observations compiled into one book. A majority of the thoughts are Zen/Taoist/Buddhist in nature, and when I first read them they really opened up my eyes and broke me out of my boring existence I once lived in. People that don't appreciate the martial arts and/or Buddhist philosophy might find some of his thoughts a little out there and useless to them. All in all, for the price, you can't beat this book.
A look at the mind behind the legend........2006-05-31
This book has great insights to many aspects of life. It is a must have for all martial artists, both teachers and practitioners. Mr. Lee was a very profound man, with not only insights to martial arts, but into life as well. These insights came from his ongoing quest to learn and progress not only as a martial artist but as a person aw well. This book provides people with a look at the mind behind the legend. If you are looking for insights, philosophies, or simply quotes this book is for you.
The breadth of the Dragon.......2005-12-12
Bruce Lee's viewpoints on life, collected by John Little and put together in this book,is absolute inspiration. No matter what religion you believe,no matter who you are, unless you're out of touch with your heart, you'll love this book.My brother always would quote the Bible and now that I bought him this book, he quotes that as well, oddly not being a fan,he quotes Bruce Lee more than the Bible now.I always have anyway,I caught Lee's message long ago.Now in this book,it's all laid out for anyone. You don't need to be a fan or a martial artist to treasure this wisdom, all you gotta be is a human-being."I want to be remembered not as a martial artist, but as a human-being."-Bruce Lee

The Learning Library is Fabulous.......2007-01-14
I purchased three books from this series. My 7 year old Granddaughter loves them, and I am relearning things that I have forgotten. She entertains both her Dad and myself with all the facts she's learning. I am going to purchase all of the rest of the series. Really great books.
A Great Non-Fiction Read for the Younger Set.......2003-09-01
I really enjoyed this book a lot. Like many other books in this series, Tish Rabe and Aristides Ruiz recycle the "Cat In The Hat" characters to teach a specific non-fiction topic. In this case, the subject at hand is the human body. They do a very nice job of covering all the main systems of the body, at a level appropriate for the target audience.
Ruiz' illustrations are spot-on replicas of what Seuss himself would have done. Rabe's narration is quite good, but just a tad below the master's work - granted, her hands are tied a bit by the subject matter.
In summary, I took off one star, since it doesn't quite read like a Seuss book, but the book is still highly recommended.

The Ultimate Answer, This is it !.......2005-12-05
I have lost weight all of my life. I have lost well over 500 pounds. (20 to 30 pounds per year) Gain, lose, gain lose; I took comfort in knowing the bears do it. The only problem as Deepak notes is that there is scientific evidence that yo yo weight control is not good for your health. With the exception of those who are clinically obese, over 25% above the normal weight for your body type, the yo yo'er is a big risk. I have successfully done just about every diet out there. The only problem is that each of them is based on excluding a food group out of your diet. After a while you crave that food group.
Talk about the "Power of Coincidence" part of another one of Deepak's books, I was at a party, and this girl who was in great shape said, "It's all about moderation and exercise" I heard that from others who have always been in great shape all their lives. The only problem is that I can't think about restricting portions or counting calories. Then along comes Deepak with the perfect answer. His program is simple, for the first two weeks only eat when you are truly hungry. He identifies the different levels of hunger, and assigns them a number. 0-1 is the first level. You feel real hunger, it is gnawing at you. This is the time when your body is prepared to assimilate food. Then you have the levels in between which is when we eat when we are not truly hungry. Maybe because it is dinnertime, or maybe because we have emotional needs that are not being met, and we are substituting food. Emotional eating as a substitute. When we are truly hungry at level 0-1, we then eat, and concentrate on what we are eating. Don't watch TV, don't talk just absorb the food. Almost on a spiritual level, you are welcoming the nutrition into your body, as compared to watching TV, talking on the phone, and scratching the cat while you are eating :-) then when you are done, you feel frustrated because you never had the "experience" of eating. In frustration you go back and eat some more. What he tells you to do is to eat until you reach level 6, which is the level that you are completely satisfied, but not over stuffed. He tells us to eat until our stomachs are about three quarters full. This is not deprivation, it is satisfaction. Furthermore, he is not telling us what to eat. When you body is telling you it is time to eat pasta, eat it. Don't over eat it, just enough until you are satisfied. This really works. I just went through the Thanksgiving holiday, even over eating on Thanksgiving, having chocolate cake on another night, and ice cream on another. All the while eating the way he taught me on the others. I am down 4 pounds over the holidays, and now I am down 5 1/2. These are no effort results. Who cares how long it takes.
Here is another key component. After the first two weeks, when he tells you to listen to your body, feel your stomach, and eat only when you are hungry, he leads you into week 3 with eating your biggest meal in the middle of the day. In Europe this is a tradition. During the morning, you should eat very little, if at all. I do this also, but I listen to my body, and if I am entering into a heavy labor day, I eat a hearty breakfast. If I am not hungry in the morning, I have green tea with mint, and seasoned with non-fat milk. Then for dinner, I eat light also, which is his recommendation. Either soup with a few pieces of toast. (Whole GRAIN toast is the most wholesome and dietetic) or I will have a light salad, or I will have whole grain cereal with non fat milk, fresh fruit or Del Monte brand quality canned fruit . So my overall day is one of fewer calories, but never am I sacrificing my pleasure. If my body says, I am at level 0-1 I eat. I don't sit down to dinner at 5 or 6 pm just because it is dinnertime and eat. If I am not hungry, I don't eat. Well duh, why have I been cramming a full meal into my body all along, even when I am not hungry, just because it is "dinner time". He says a pound a week is what to expect. With more exercise, expect more. Here is where he shines again. He gives us several Yoga poses that we are supposed to get into and hold for 5 seconds. Increase flexibility, strength, stamina, balance and generate a sense of well being in only 10 or 15 minutes. You can repeat them as you grow.
Now let me get onto something that is just as important. I am 55 years of age. Recently I started having what is known as Acid Reflux Disease. I am normally a perfectly healthy person. What I have been experiencing is waking up in the night, with gas trying to leave my body, but because I have been eating dinner at 8pm, then having a double chocolate pudding at 10:30 or 11pm, I have been having that problem. Gas trying to leave my body, being blocked by food in the way. So it pushes the food up above the esophogeal sphincter, burning the lining with stomach acid, and that is what they mean by acid reflux. No matter what I ate late it was a problem. Then I tried Deepak's eating routine as spelled out in this book, and I have not had even one single night of this problem. Forget taking medicine to mask the symptom, fix the problem instead. I even had Gastritis one night, where I woke up with SHARP gas pains in the upper part of my stomach area, and was wondering if I was having heart problems. I read in Back to Eden by Jethro Kloss about the causes, symptoms and treatment of, and was great relieved to see it was gastritis. (I highly, highly recommend Back to Eden as well)
So what did Dr. Chopra do with this book? He gave me back health, and gave me a way to lose weight for the rest of my life. A pound a week is fine with me. I'm not deprived in any way; I simply am no longer over eating. As a matter of fact the light mornings, and or light evenings are a miracle cure for a weight problem. Now I look and say, hey, be in perfect shape by next fall, no problem. I can do this forever. Maybe I can up my exercise routine and get there even faster.
By the way he calls the book "Perfect Weight" because he is not interested in you being skinny. He wants you to pick out the weight you want to be, and to be happy at that weight. (As long as the number is not at the level of obesity) When you are happy at a certain weight, your body shows it. You walk it, talk it, and exhume it. Like they say, when you look good, you feel good.
Including ginger in your diet, and sipping hot water during the day, I haven't done that yet, so ignore the skeptics. I'm perfectly happy with doing the rest of the program. I know I will introduce more ginger into my diet, and I will include more Green tea with mint very hot as a means of sipping hot water. Hey the rest of the program works, why not that part too.
This program is great. I know how to lose 6 pounds in a week, only to grow tired of the regimen. I think I will do this instead, and live a little now, while I am on the pathway to health and happiness. I highly, highly recommend this book. Thanks for your time.
Not-So-Perfect Book about Perfect Weight.......2004-04-01
This book was less than helpful for me. First of all, the section on figuring out your body type was confusing and I did not come up with a clear-cut answer. Although this book contained some interesting theories and ideas, the majority of the techniques and suggestions are completely impractical for anyone with a normal life, schedule and job. For example, I work from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, and most days without a lunch "break". I eat in the car on the way to my next client. So how am I supposed to eat a large, hot meal at a specific time, made of freshly cooked food and not leftovers? Really, unless they invent microwave ovens for cars, it's not going to happen. Also, some of the other ideas were just downright unappealing to me, bordering on disgusting (drinking boiled warm milk and sipping hot water with ginger all day while eliminating cold drinks). This plan may be very effective for the independently wealthy who are able to sit meditating in a beatiful natural setting and have a personal shopper and chef to wait on them. But for the rest of us, this book does not contain much practical advice for people with busy lives. I know myself and this is a weight loss program requiring too many radical changes and impractical ideas that I would never get past the first week. I found this book to be a not-so-perfect weight loss theory.
Belive it or not... :-).......2002-05-06
For years I read self-help and motivational books. Like 7 habits for highly effective people, Life strategies - Doing what matters doing what works and the likes. But never having dedicatede the time and effort to start the procces to actually put my knowleged into practical application.
My new-years resolution for 2001 was "More love for me, More love to what I do!" And come feb. life handed me an oppotunity to drop off the radar and start practicing what I had been preacing to my self for years.
I had been over weight since I was 13-14 years old.
Simplyfied but true, at 137 kg, being fat was my ultimate excuse for anything wrong that happend in my life.
So I decided to focus my attention to turn the tabel and start showing myself the love I felt I lacked.
I had known about Chopra for years and when I came across this book I thought "Why not this way!" and bought it.
To cut an already long story short :-)
Now a year and a half later I'm at 88-90kg (Down some 50kg)
Wow, but the most important points I will stress to you wanting to use this book as inspiration and guide. Drink the boiling water and don't focus on how much you loose in Lbs./Kg's, but how much you show your self that you're worth it, by sticking to your plan. And don't forget... If you fall of the horse - TRY AGAIN! Best of wishes and loads of love to you all - You ARE worth it, you just wait and see ;-)
Not very practical.......2002-01-16
This is a well written and informative book. Unfortunately for me it is not a practical one. Sure if I changed my life around completely I would be able to follow the guidelines of the book - but who can do that when they have to earn a living?
If you are retired or without any permanent committments then Deepak's book may just work for you. Read it enjoy it but don't necessarily expect to use it.
Small but powerful.......2001-04-29
I was amazed at how much information was packed into such a modest looking book. I read it twice and made so many notes. I borrowed this copy but am buying one for my own reference. I also researched blood type dieting and it all ties in together. The guidelines and information detailed in Perfect Weight make dieting obsolete and transforming my lifestyle into changes my body is craving naturally. Stress free and pleasurable. Simply the best advice I've ever read on the subject.
Book Description
John Searle’s Speech Acts (1969) and Expression and Meaning (1979) developed a highly original and influential approach to the study of language. But behind both works lay the assumption that the philosophy of language is in the end a branch of the philosophy of the mind: speech acts are forms of human action and represent just one example of the mind’s capacity to relate the human organism to the world. The present book is concerned with these biologically fundamental capacities, and, though third in the sequence, in effect it provides the philosophical foundations for the other two. Intentionality is taken to be the crucial mental phenomenon, and its analysis involves wide-ranging discussions of perception, action, causation, meaning, and reference. In all these areas John Searle has original and stimulating views. He ends with a resolution of the ‘mind-body’ problem.

Excellent Modern Theory of Mind.......2001-07-11
P>In his usual manner, Searle tackles the problem of consciousness and how the mind works in this thorough examination of both classical and contemporary concerns. It's an exceedingly masterful task that is richly rewarding, if only slightly frustrating because of his poor syntactical structures.
Analytic philosophy is often difficult enough, and this book is of average difficulty, but when an author does not write clearly with near-run-on sentences, myandering and labyrinthine syntax, and in less than necessary obtuseness, it is a drawback. This is my only complaint.
Part of the problem is the author's, part reader's. Searle is going against the analytic grain by expositing a theory of mind that is at once novel and distinctive, clearing up confusions and ambiguities along the way. But these new ideas and the direction of fit they present are exciting and facinating, even if the presentation is less than perfect.
It's hard to imagine modern-day analytic philosophers going out on a limb with actual theory (they tend toward the criticism of others), so that it is refreshing that someone of Mr. Searle's reputation and caliber takes a stab at presenting a coherent theory of mind in new dress and ambiance: Naive realism.
This isn't the first book of Searle's I'd recommend. That honor goes to "Mind, Language, and Society," his short, but densely argued, and clearer exposition, of several ideas (some of which he adumbrates from this volume). If you like what you read in THAT book, this book will further delight you.
What's so agreeable about Searle, if not his syntax, is his willingness to posit a coherent theory of mind in the traditional vein but in entirely new clothing. It's refreshing to see a modern philosopher actually doing philosophy, not critiquing the philosophy of others. Searle would probably have advanced his cause by having someone else tidy up his presentation, as this drawback reduces the splendor of the overall book.
Frames the large picture of the mind-body duality.......2000-11-04
The current philosophical debates about what is the mind and how can it translate intentions into body actions including language and action are summed up into a convincing, clear-headed, yet arrogant and extremely mis-guided approach to this philosophical question. Searle's logical formalism may "pull-the-wool" over many people's eyes, but his statements have garnered much negative criticism in the eyes of his peers.
Perhaps the best way to sum up his book is that he believes there is no difference between the mind and the body, and that the original question is flawed, yet at the same time, he establishes the existence of an intention, an entirely mental concept have physical equivalences. This is really an uninspired type of answer, and is largely considered a cop-out by most.

A fascinating perspective.......2005-09-21
This book provides an entirely new prespective for our current day of living (and the point of it all). If you think you're open minded, read this book and then re-evaluate yourself on this very point. There is a great deal of insight, some prognostication and ideals that will test your belief system. It's worth reading and considering the contents.
Living Library.......2005-02-17
I have owned a copy of this book for 3 years and I still refer to it regularly. I consider the contents to be above value for maintaining an open mind and expanding the imagination. My sincerest thanks go to Barbara, and to those who assisted her in bringing this book into this world, giving others such as myself the opportunity to read it.
New Age Drivel.......2004-09-05
I feel very sorry for Barbara Marciniak. She is being used by these forces of darkness to spread the message that Christ never existed. I hope and pray that she and her followers see the light before more people become deceived into believing this sugar-coated web of lies.
Confounded Into Clarity.......2004-03-22
Truth be told, I would never have made it through this book if the Universe had not placed it before my path in perfect, divine synchronicity. And so I began to read and attempt to live the lessons within these pages. The lessons have taken me far, teaching me, through confoundment and humour, how to energize my dreams into 3D and to open myself to the returning feminine energy of our imbalanced times. "Earth" is a catalyst for change, and reawakens one from deep imprinting and rigid belief systems written and sold as reality in the airwaves surrounding our daily lives. Since consciously embarking upon a spiritual path I've seen deep truths and yet startling inconsistiences in the information given in Earth. Yet, the Pleiadians themselves mention, time and time again, that they are storytellers and that all they do is create imagery from which one can evolve. "Earth" accomplishes this movement towards evolution by existing as a paradox that stretches the imagination, sharing deep and forgotten secrets, and by tricking one into discovering the mystical teaching source of our own inner essence.

Sharon Salzberg, a meditation teacher and the founder of the Insight Meditation Society in Massachusetts, focuses on a kind of Buddhist practice that emphasizes feelings of love, happiness, and compassion. Metta, or "lovingkindness," meditation involves four phrases: "May I be free from danger"; "May I have mental happiness"; "May I have physical happiness"; "May I have ease of well-being." (Some readers will find this surprising, since the most commonly known meditation techniques have little "content"--you simply repeat a single word or phrase, observe your breath, or observe your thoughts as they pass through your mind.) Other exercises in this book are intended to increase your connection to and intimacy with others, by directing these positive sentiments outward toward specific people or the world in general. This book will probably be best appreciated by those who have some experience with meditation already, but anyone can appreciate the way it takes a practice often considered mystical and turns it into a means of creating joy. --Ben Kallen
Book Description
Throughout our lives we long to love ourselves more deeply and find a greater sense of connection with others. Our fear of intimacy—both with others and with ourselves—creates feelings of pain and longing. But these feelings can also awaken in us the desire for freedom and the willingness to take up the spiritual path. In this inspiring book, Sharon Salzberg, one of America's leading spiritual teachers, shows us how the Buddhist path of lovingkindness ( metta in Pali), can help us discover the radiant, joyful heart within each of us. This practice of lovingkindness is revolutionary because it has the power to radically change our lives, helping us create true happiness in ourselves and genuine compassion for others. The Buddha described the nature of such a spiritual path as "the liberation of the heart, which is love." The author draws on simple Buddhist teachings, wisdom stories from various traditions, guided meditation practices, and her own experience from twenty-five years of practice and teaching to illustrate how each one of us can cultivate love, compassion, joy, and equanimity—the four "heavenly abodes" of traditional Buddhism.

Excellent Purchase.......2007-07-09
This is an extraordinary little book, which provides specific instruction on both how to meditate in the Vipassana style, and WHY it's a worthwhile practice.
Clear, hopeful teaching and guidance for metta meditation.......2006-11-02
I am not overstating in saying that I owe much of my happiness to the principles this book so clearly, intelligently, and accessibly presents. The principle of loving-kindness is explained in short, marvelously fat-free chapters, at the end of each of which are excellent guided suggestions for practice. The book is impeccably written and edited. These meditations have helped me through profound grieving, which has transformed into joy and new insight.
I especially recommend this book for readers who are experiencing divorce or other difficult interpersonal problems. Short of an expensive and demanding meditation retreat I can think of no better practice for unconditional love and happiness. This is worth a mint in therapy!
No religious belief in Buddhism is necessary.
Highly recommended.......2006-10-20
This is one of the best books that I have read in the area of Buddhism. Salzberg's writing style is warm and friendly but is nonetheless clear and to the point. While a teacher of meditation and Buddhism, she expresses great psychological understanding of emotion and writes with the acumen of a trained therapist.
In this book, Salzberg describes meditations on the brahma viharas: lovingkindness, compassion, sympathetic joy, and equanimity. These are the "divine abodes," sometimes called the cardinal virtues of Buddhism. Salzberg provides a clear rationale as to why these types of meditation are beneficial and how to do them. The practice is deep, but can be started by any beginner through the means described in this book.
The benefits of this type of meditation are nothing short of impressive. Within a few days of doing metta meditation (lovingkindness), I began to notice emotional changes in myself--feeling more happiness, warmth, and caring.
This book is highly accessible to non-Buddhists. Practicing these techniques does not require a religious conversion. Anyone who values basic virtues such as kindness, compassion, and emotional balance will find these techniques agreeable. They are based on psychological principles and were designed to increase emotional well-being.
taking action in loving kindness.......2006-04-27
Salzberg is founder of the Insight Meditation Society in Massachusetts. Her loving kindness (compassion) meditations are designed to help you realize deeper connections of intimacy with others and peace of mind within. She encourages you not just to think about loving kindness but to take action.
Good introduction, but some shortcomings.......2006-03-25
Basically, I liked this book and found that it covered all the essential points anyone would want to know. However, in places I thought it was redundant and could have gone deeper.
While there are several books on this topic, this is one of the most accesible to Westerners. I also think Sharon Salzberg's sincerity and belief in what she is doing comes through.
If you don't own any resources on Metta meditation, this is a good place to start.
