Book Description

Kim Edwards's stunning family drama evokes the spirit of Sue Miller and Alice Sebold, articulating every mother's silent fear: what would happen if you lost your child and she grew up without you? In 1964, when a blizzard forces Dr. David Henry to deliver his own twins, he immediately recognizes that one of them has Down Syndrome and makes a split-second decision that will haunt all their lives forever. He asks his nurse to take the baby away to an institution and to keep her birth a secret. Instead, she disappears into another city to raise the child as her own. Compulsively readable and deeply moving, The Memory Keeper's Daughter is an astonishing tale of redemptive love. BACKCOVER: “Edwards is a born novelist. . . . Rich with psychological detail and the nuances of human connection.”
—Chicago Tribune

“Unfolds from an absolutely gripping premise, drawing you deeply and irrevocably into the entangled lives of two families and the devastating secret that shaped them both. I loved this riveting story.”
—Sue Monk Kidd

“Anyone would be struck by the extraordinary power and sympathy of The Memory Keeper's Daughter.”
—The Washington Post

“Kim Edwards has written a novel so mesmerizing that I devoured it. . . . The Memory Keeper's Daughter has it all.”
—Sena Jeter Naslund

“Kim Edwards has created a tale of regret and redemption, of honest emotion, of characters haunted by their past. This is simply a beautiful book.”
—Jodi Picoult

1 out of 5 stars Really wanted to love this book but didn't even like it..........2007-10-09

I really wanted to love this book....after all, its a National Bestseller, on multiple critic's "must-read" list, on my Amazon recommendations list every time I check, and I have had more than a few people recommend it to me. Also, after reading the first thirty pages or so, I was riveted - such a unique and interesting plot....I though the rest of the book would be sensational. However, not only was I wrong and beyond disappointed, but I just can't understand the hype surrounding this book!

Once the plot is set-up within the first thirty pages or so, the book utterly failed to deliver and just tanked. The writing is boring, trite and the entire middle of the book is way too repetitive. Each paragraph I read felt like I had read it before...saying the same thing ten different times/ways does not make a book interesting. In fact, I had a hard time forcing myself to keep reading, but kept thinking about the fact that so many people liked this book so figured maybe the ending would somehow redeem it. It didn't. The book went downhill fast and never recovered, not even at the end. I DO NOT recommend this book at all!

2 out of 5 stars A good concept, but fails in the delivery.......2007-10-09

I failed to connect with anything in this novel: not the plot, not the characters, not the writing style. It just didn't live up to the hype that seems to surround it. I think my biggest problem was with the author. Kim Edwards has "Lifetime Original Movie" scripts in her future, in my opinion. I found the story quite contrived and often cheesy. The reader KNOWS that the secret will be revealed at some point. Knowing what is coming just kills a book. I have a few ideas of how Edwards could have made this better, and they all involve some pretty major plot adjustments. I wish I felt SOMETHING (love, hate, whatever!) for the characters because I think that could have saved the story for me. I know I was supposed to care, to feel anger, resentment, frustration... I just didn't feel any of these things. So, unfortunately, I can't recommend this book, though I must say there is an audience for it. Several people in my bookclub found something personal that they could connect with in the book, and it clearly impacted their impression of it. Not sure why I didn't, but...it is what it is...

1 out of 5 stars A Waste... .......2007-10-08

This novel was predictable, I had zero interest in the characters, and the writing was juvenile; I struggled to finish it. I would definitely not recommend this novel - what a waste of 400 pages.

1 out of 5 stars contrite.......2007-10-05

i found the characters to be completely unrealistic. A mother who thinks that she lost one of her children at birth spends the rest of her life feeling empty. Her husband, albeit a good man, hides the secret (that their child is alive) from her his entire life. come on, you must be joking. i kept reading the book thinking that the characters would become more "real" but it didn't happen. and, it's a long book!

The husband was a good father to their son yet the sons spends his entire adolescent and adulthood hating the father. ridiculous! if, as in real life, the author would have simply let the boy go through what most adolescents do (disliking their parents) but then turning around in young adulthood, it would be so much more believable.

very disappointing.

4 out of 5 stars Great book - couldn't put it down!.......2007-10-05

I really enjoyed this book, and found that I couldn't put it down. Edwards allows you to get really involved with the characters, and sympathise with all viewpoints. I would have one caveat: the subject matter was quite sad and depressing, and so I wouldn't recommend it to anyone who wants a happy and jolly read!

Book Description

New York Times bestselling author Jodi Picoult is widely acclaimed for her keen insights into the hearts and minds of real people. Now she tells the emotionally riveting story of a family torn apart by conflicting needs and a passionate love that triumphs over human weakness.

Anna is not sick, but she might as well be. By age thirteen, she has undergone countless surgeries, transfusions, and shots so that her older sister, Kate, can somehow fight the leukemia that has plagued her since childhood. The product of preimplantation genetic diagnosis, Anna was conceived as a bone marrow match for Kate -- a life and a role that she has never challenged...until now. Like most teenagers, Anna is beginning to question who she truly is. But unlike most teenagers, she has always been defined in terms of her sister -- and so Anna makes a decision that for most would be unthinkable, a decision that will tear her family apart and have perhaps fatal consequences for the sister she loves.

My Sister's Keeper examines what it means to be a good parent, a good sister, a good person. Is it morally correct to do whatever it takes to save a child's life, even if that means infringing upon the rights of another? Is it worth trying to discover who you really are, if that quest makes you like yourself less? Should you follow your own heart, or let others lead you? Once again, in My Sister's Keeper, Jodi Picoult tackles a controversial real-life subject with grace, wisdom, and sensitivity.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Moving in many ways.......2007-10-02

I couldn't wait to read this book and am happy I did. Although, after reading it, I decided to put Jodi Picoult away for a bit. I read 4 of her books in a row and they have a way of getting you where it hurts. This book was very well written, as usual. I felt very bad for both sisters. I found myself emotionally tied to the entire family, with the exception of the mother. I felt she was very tunnel visioned and couldn't see Anna as any more than a "donor". All I know is for someone who doesn't cry, I bauled my eyes out at the end.

5 out of 5 stars Loved It.......2007-10-02

I loved this book. fast moving, glib, cerebral, lovely and eloquent Jodi writes with a fierceness and simultaneousl eloquence.

I can't wait for the next book. If it's half as good as this one I'm a new fan.Cat's Cradle

5 out of 5 stars Wow!...again, WOW!.......2007-09-28

I couldn't put this book down. Absolutely riveting. The story is told from each character's point of view. All well done for the most part, although occasionally Anna, the 13-year old, seemed on some level, way too old for her age, i.e. very eloquent at times which seemed a bit unbelievable to me. But maybe Anna's maturity was the point the writer was trying to make. Hint: Don't look to the last chapter until you get there.

5 out of 5 stars A work of art........2007-09-20

An absolute work of art. I do not understand why people are complaining about the ending. Not every story has a happy ending; which is what makes this novel so riveting. It is based on what can happen in real life. Life is not a fairy tale. The novel is written beautifully and keeps the reader intrigued from the first page to the last.

4 out of 5 stars My Sister's Keeper.......2007-09-18

Picoult tackles the touchy subjects of medical and parental ethics in this refreshingly original book about a family dealing with the disease of one of its own. Using multiple characters' thoughts and viewpoints, Picoult portrays the struggles of Kate, a teenager with leukemia, who must rely on her genetically altered younger sister, Anna, to keep her alive through regular blood transfusions and transplants. After years of invasive surgeries, Anna hires a lawyer to gain medical emancipation from her parents so she can stop being the guinea pig for her older sister and finally gain control of her own life. What follows is a rollercoaster ride of emotions as the two sisters, their brother Jesse, and their parents must essentially choose sides by supporting either Anna or Kate, thus nearly ripping the family apart.

With My Sister's Keeper, Picoult serves up a thought-provoking novel that fairly covers both sides of several hairy issues including genetic alteration, children's rights, and parents' allegiance to their kids. Although this book cannot be labeled as an ethical guidebook in any way, it can and does serve as a mediator between opposing viewpoints surrounding the aforementioned ethical dilemmas. By nature it forces the reader to take sides with or against each character in the book and evaluate one's own values and morals in the process using an intricate plot and intriguing character insight.

Whether one likes the book or not, this book's consequences will be felt by each reader. Although it may never alter the landscape of medical ethics, it has the power to change and shape the thought processes by which doctors and family members make tough decisions. By breaking down the case of Kate and Anna and making it into an emotional tale of family perseverance, everyone who reads this novel must evaluate their stance on each issue, making it more likely they will return to these evaluations in real life situations. Whether dealing with leukemia or a minor moral dillema, Picoult shows the reader how each can affect multiple characters and alter the outcome of a life. The life lessons found in the book can be used long after it has been finished.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Cheap, Flimsy, Memory Book.......2007-06-29

I was very disappointed when I opened this Memory Keeper School Days book.
I cannot believe the price they are charging for this cheaply constructed book. It looked and felt as if it were just glued together and seemed if it were opened and closed too many times it would just fall apart.
If I had seen this in the store I would not have even paid $10 for it, let alone almost $30 including s&h. This is not worth the money at all. I purchased one of these several years ago and paid LESS and it went from Pre-school to 12th grade and had beautiful pocket folders and pictures it it and was very strongly bound together. I thought this would be similar but not even close.

3 out of 5 stars school years book.......2007-06-27

The book is nice but I wish it had more features. I suppose I would recommend but not highly.

5 out of 5 stars A Snapshot in Time.......2007-05-13

We got our first memory book as a gift for my oldest daughter, now in 4th grade. I thought it was such a great and quick way to document the precious moments(for those of us who don't have the time or resources to dedicate to scrapbooking). I have purchased one for each of my younger two daughters.
This book features pockets to store awards and favorite pictures for each grade. I am sure they will enjoy looking back on these memories in the years to come.

3 out of 5 stars School Days Book.......2007-01-05

I was a little disappointed when I received the book and it only had space for school pictures up to 8th grade on the cover. I didn't want to unwrap it to see if it had anything for grades over 8, but I do not believe it did.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT MEMORIES.......2005-09-06

This is a wonderful memory keeper for your child so you can keep up with his first 8 years of school. We tend to forget as we get older what our children accomplished as youngsters and this is a great way to look back and remember. Your child will have something to share with their children. Highly recommend!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating account of abduction.......2007-10-03

This was a very interesting read. Sparks gives many details of his encounters with ETs including grays and reptilians. He was forced to learn some kind of language by these ETs who also claimed they own us!
He also had encounters with military people who were working with grays and using some kind of teleportation device on him.
Linda M. Howe and John Mack apparently found him to be credible. I read this book with a group and a skeptical member of the group was shocked to read an account that matched their own experience! Very interesting!

5 out of 5 stars keepers:an alien message for the human race.......2007-08-28

Wonderful, best recolection of an alien encounter ever. Makes you stop and think, eyes wide open, and it could happen to anybody.

3 out of 5 stars Think about it..........2007-08-07

I am really so very tired of all the ignorant people who constantly ask: "If there are UFO's, why don't they show themselves in some irrefutable way, like hang out over the White House for a day?"

Firstly, can you imagine the scene? Most people are asleep and unenlightened. A UFO hanging over the White House would certainly seem threatening and would be completely and utterly life changing. Our ideas of who we are would change in an instant, especially for those whose ideas of life are founded in religion. This planet is not ready for such an event.

If there are aliens, obviously they've evolved in such a way that war and hatred are no longer a predominant focus in their lives. If they hadn't learned to get along, they would have destroyed themselves long ago. They are technoligically and spiritually evolved and obviously would not want to force themselves on a planet that is still in kindergarten in the Universe. We would revere them as Gods, and again, our planet is not ready for such an event.

For gosh sakes. The Universe is made up of, literally, MILLIONS of galaxies, like our own Milky Way. Are you really willing to declare that life on other planets could not have possibly evolved much in the way our planet has evolved? Isn't that a silly assumption? Are you the sort of person who would have jailed Galileo for stating that the earth is not the center of our galaxy? Or would you have laughed when it was said the earth was not flat? Stop driving into your garage after work and popping a beer! Learn to think! Go outside of your own comfort zone and imagine a reality different than the one you've created---one devoid of logic.

You think that a grand cover up could not have happened? Please! The Government would rather shrivel up and die than admit they've lied to us for more than fifty years about UFO's. Perfectly sane and logical people have attested to seeing them, including astranout Edgar Mitchell, the former Governor of Arizona, and emergency room doctor Steven Greer. In fact, the last person alive involved in the Roswell incident signed an affadavit right before he died attesting to the truth about Roswell! It was released last week. Heck, even Jimmy Carter says he saw a UFO. These people aren't crazy---just honest.

Hmmmm...what does the Government have to lose? Trillions of dollars in block operation money, their shirts, their integrity, their power...and last but not least----their oil! If aliens are visiting us, obviously they have found a better way to run engines than using oil. Imagine the oil magnates giving up their power and profits to entertain propulsion technology-----a use of natural laws to propel transportation systems, specifically crafts. You think they'd just roll over and let it happen? Cover ups happen by those who have the most to lose, especially the rich and powerful.

Think about alien visitation as a way for other planetary species to slowly indoctrinate us to their existence. They're letting us know that they are here without imposing their way of life on us. Clever and intelligent, I think. Heck, they're facing a government that won't even admit their existence. They know that. They get it.

Abductions? Maybe. They may be overly curious. I don't blame them, really. We're an interesting species... still murdering eachother. letting eachother starve, but capable of great compassion and good works.
I'd be really curious about our species, too. Intersting sort we are.

Most people want irrefutable proof. If an astonaut and a Governor don't do it for you, visit this site (www.disclsoureproject.org) where dozens of high placed officials testified in front of the press that yes, ufo's exist. Guess what? The press didn't cover it very well...hmmm...wonder why. And here's a morning jolt along with your Starbucks coffee---the video of these people testifying are on line. All you have to do is look.

Brazil just initiated their own UFO Investigation council. Mexico is not shy about reporting them and other countries have opened up their books on UFO'S. Sorry your country stinks in this manner, but then think of JFK. There has always been a lot of secrets in this country. Face up.

Oh yes, America the beautiful, home of the brave, truth, yadda, yadda, yadda. You wouldn't believe what you don't know here, but hey, they keep you so busy paying bills, outrageous interest rates and working your butts off most of your life, you don't have time to think about important things like oil, aliens and war. They like it that way. They prefer us to be a bunch of sheep, but hey, keep telling yourself how free you are.

Life on other planets?

It very well may be. Einstein and friends all believed it, but who was he? Oh, probably the most intelligent man to ever walk the earth, but don't take his word for it. You must know better.

This book is interesting, but there's a lot of disinformation about the UFO experience. Personally, I don't believe in all this scary UFO crap---it seems to me another way to discredit this burgeoning reality. I'm skeptical of untoward and war-like aliens and if you don't believe me, read above.

Ask twenty of your friends if they've ever seen a UFO and then do some reading and do some logical thinking..... hmmmmm..... big universe, huh? other planets, too. Why wouldn't there be other life forms? Oh, yes, I know...the world is flat....and oh yes, we are the center of the universe. Poor logic.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding account of pure terror.......2007-06-27

This man has gone through a transition that literally thousands of other are doing RIGHT now all over the world. Our Government KNOWS what aliens are doing to AMERICANS and does absolutely NOTHING to stop it. This is REAL people....wake UP HOLD our government accountable!

5 out of 5 stars excellent, but stick to the truth.......2007-06-21

I found this book one of the best alien abduction accounts I've ever read, although I'm afraid Mr.Sparks added a little of his own personal fantasy to it.I'm quite skeptical about the people from the future carrying wrong currencies and so on,this seems a little too far-fetched for me.

Book Description

Setting out on the "vacation of a lifetime" Marissa Chabot is well-provisioned with sunblock, rum and a stack of good books. Being one of the founders of Finders Keepers, the successful, high-tech "soul-mate matching service," she knows that vacation romances are hopeless.

When Linda Bartok--tall, dark and beautiful--sweeps her off her feet anyway, Marissa yields to the magic of a storybook rescue, moonlit walks on the beach and longed-for whispers of passion. Though it hardly seems possible that the Amazonian, adventurous Linda could be truly interested in a desk-bound computer geek, the most erotic encounters of Marissa's life complete her surrender.

Vacations end. Real life resumes. Waiting for the phone to ring, Marissa wonders if what she had seen in Linda's eyes could have possibly been true. Had it been a vacation romance? Was she going to end up "losers weepers"?

Finders Keepers, the quest for the perfect mate in the 21st Century, joins Karin Kallmaker's Just Like That and her other incomparable novels about lesbian love, lust and laughter

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Karin has done it again!.......2007-06-13

Not all women are tall, dark, slender and beautiful! Not all romances happen the way we want them. Karin has done it again, another great story for me to enjoy. I enjoy picking up Karin's books and escaping into another, what could have been. I love the way she numbers her books and never tire hearing that she and Maria are still in love.

5 out of 5 stars A Feel-Good Romance.......2007-05-10

Escape to a romantic island getaway and fall in love with these two ladies as they fall in love with each other.

4 out of 5 stars more pleasant escapism .......2007-05-05

You can usually count on good lighthearted entertainment when you pick up a novel by this author and this new story is in the same mold as most I have read by her. Some reviewers seemed to think the story was weightier and more meaningful than I did. I read it for escapism and that's what I enjoyed about it. Two lovely women, Linda and Marissa get thrown together on a romantic island resort and fall in love. Ms. Kallmaker makes these woman and their personal troubles feel quite realistic without going into a lot of depth or turning the book into a downer. This is a nice feel-good romance. It's nothing special and the exotic setting lacks the rich detail I've seen in some other romances, but if you want to take a break from real life, this book will give you a couple of hours of happy reading. Fans will lap it up, as all the reviews prove. I'm a fan of really good romances, not just particular authors. This story and the two main characters are average, but the smooth writing puts it in the top 25% I have read this year, so it gets a 4 from me.

5 out of 5 stars Kallmaker is at the TOP of her game with this one!.......2007-05-04

Wow! I just read Finders Keepers while on vacation, and honestly it's one of Karin's top 3. Not only that, it's one of the best reads you will find in lesbian romance. It has everything and more. Passion, romance, humor and intellectual substance all rolled up in one fine little novel. There is a truly thought provoking story line about body image that resonates with both characters yet each in a very unique way. On top of it, the romance aspect of the story line really grabs your attention and won't let you go! You really have no idea how things turn out until the end and I love the element of surprise. Then on top of it all is Kallmaker's well timed and tasteful interjection of humor throughout the novel that really adds to the pure enjoyment of reading this fine piece of work. It will make you think, laugh, sweat and leave you wanting more. I highly, highly recommend this book. Bravo Karin Kallmaker!

4 out of 5 stars it's a keeper.......2007-04-22

This book revolves around 2 women (and their mothers!) learning about themselves... what from their past is blocking them on the road to who they want to be... and what they must face to become their "own selves".

The internal dialoge gets better with each book. Many chuckles came from the finely crafted P.S.s in the letters never sent. The protagenists in her books always have different careers. I enjoy reading them to learn more about what they do day to day. I missed that bit in one of these characters. I understand why it wasn't there but I can't tell you why because that would tell you a bit about the book that might be considered a spoiler.

I admit to being grumpy that my partner grabbed the book as soon as i finished it, before i could read it over... but as it's a book that i read cover to cover in a day, i'm hoping to have another shot at it tomorrow.

I bought this journal during a wine course I was studying recently. It's small enough to fit in a purse or pocket, but big enough to read your own writing. I think it's a great way to keep a log of wines and varietals you like, as well as remember what to order next time around.

Book Description

For ambitious, troubled architect Ray Jackson, the nightmare begins one sultry California night when his wife disappears. No phone call, no ransom note, no body, reveals whether Leigh is dead or alive.

Then, suddenly, a woman shows up on Ray’s doorstep demanding answers: Kathleen, an old friend of Leigh’s. Ray wants answers, too, but his questions seem strange and shady to Kat. Suspected by his wife’s friend and by the police, Ray launches a desperate and alarming search of his own. Using a collection of keys he has held on to since he was a boy–keys to homes he and his mother once lived in–Ray quietly yet boldly enters each house, one by one, hoping to unlock the secrets of his own past. As past and present collide, as a chilling mystery begins to unravel, Ray is suddenly confronted with the most agonizing decision of his life–to face his own violence-laden past, acting to prevent another horrendous act of violence, or not. His choice will leave nothing and no one the same.

1 out of 5 stars awful.......2007-10-03

I have never written a review about a book before, but this one was so bad I felt compelled to help others avoid the mistake of buying it as I did...too bad I didn't read the other reviews first myself.

It seemed disjointed and repetitive (perhaps a problem with having two authors??). There were lots of cliches and a lot of bad writing that sounded like a horny teenage boy came up with it. I like to be given a little credit as a reader, and not have the author repeat the same thing over and over again, as if I couldn't pick up on it the first or second or third time. But I lost track of how many times the book mentioned the traffic in LA, or the burnt, ugly landscape. The characters weren't very interesting or likable, and I found myself not caring what happened to any of them.

I had decided not to even finish it because it seemed like a waste of time, but I kept reading thinking it would get better, and I wanted to give the book a chance. I had guessed the ending long before I got to the last pages, and it seemed to be the culmination of a bad story that only got published because the authors had managed some halfway decent books in the past. This is the kind of book that makes me not want to read another mystery again. It was my first O'Shaughnessy book...and my last.

2 out of 5 stars Stick to what you do best!.......2007-08-16

These two writers should not delve into other areas; apparently they have Nina Reilly down pat and her stories are always good. This book does not seem to have been written by the sisters at all. I was very disappointed in the characters, especially the two sisters Kat and Jacki. Are these autobiographical? Sorry, but I would not recommend.

4 out of 5 stars I Beg to Disagree.......2007-07-06

OK, I'm truly shocked by the negative reviews. Having read everything the O'Shaughnessy Sisters have written, I found "Keeper of the Keys" a terrific departure from the Nina Reilly series--spooky, fast-paced, mysterious and dark. Is it the greatest mystery ever written? I guess not, but it had me wondering through most of the book, and quickly turning pages to find out what happens next.

A lot of the book was reminiscent of J.D. Robb's (aka Nora Roberts') style in the "In Death" series--no-nonsense, jumps right in to the story, very fast-paced, not a lot of frill. And I love that.

The story begins with a fight between a quite spooky but brilliant architect, Ray, and his unfaithful wife, Leigh--who disappears right after the fight. Did Ray kill her? It's a strong possiblity, as he seems unhinged as it is. Did his equally unhinged mother have a part in the probable murder? And what of Leigh's old friend Kat, who suddenly reappears and wants to help Ray find Leigh even when she believes he probably murdered her?

I found this a terrific summer read...I see I'm in the minority, but that's my story and I'm sticking to it!

1 out of 5 stars Very disappointing book........2007-06-03

This was my first time reading O'Shaughnessy and I was very disappointed. I love a good mystery but having a grown man use keys that he's had all his life to enter various houses he lived in as a boy bordered on the absurd for me. I got through the first 150 pages and could not go any further. I've heard really good things about the O'Shaugnessy novels and I couldn't wait to finally read one but I'm not sure I'll ever pick-up another one.

1 out of 5 stars JUST STAY AWAY.......2007-05-15

We borrowed this book-on-cd for our roadtrip to St. Louis. BAD IDEA. The story couldn't be more clogged with terrible metaphors, lame cliches, weak characters, and stupid plot twists. I mean, a redhead with a bad reputation? A pregnant woman getting hit by a limo? A doting mother who insists "Now, you eat your delicious cake!"????

Save your money for something more worthwhile, like your HMO co-pay.

Book Description

Independent trader Trilby Elliot is making some not-quite-legal modifications to her starfreighter, when an unexpected visitor falls out of space. Literally. He’s crashed onto the uninhabited planet of Avanar in a crippled ’Sko fighter–the last place you’d expect to find a Zafharin military officer because the ’Sko and the Zafharin have been at war as long as Trilby can remember.

Rhis Vanur is your typically arrogant Zafharin. But to Trilby’s surprise, he doesn’t look down on her or her slapdash ship. Still, Trilby’s learned the hard way that even though she found Rhis, she can’t keep him. She’s just a low-budget jump jockey as far as men like him are concerned. She’s not falling for his offer to help…until Port Rumor reports her best friend missing and Trilby learns that the ’Sko are hunting both her and Rhis. Now they’re in it together for better, for worse–or till death blasts them to oblivion....

1 out of 5 stars Beam It Down!.......2007-08-01

Yuck. A badly written romance novel with a pinch of science fiction thrown in to fool the unwary SF fan. Rotten story, unbelievable characters, ridiculous and confusing political situation, and a cutesy C3PO knockoff from Star Wars. As far as the romance goes, it it unbelievable and badly handled. As far as the science fiction aspect goes, it reminds me of lemonade made with half the amount of mix that the recipe calls for--dull, dilute & making your wonder why you're wasting your time on it. I read the first 1/4 of this dog & then skimmed the rest just say I'd finished it. Now I wish I'd saved myself the disagreeable experience. Do NOT waste your time on this!

5 out of 5 stars Wary of Cross-overs? Don't fear!.......2007-06-08

Sometimes I'm wary of cross-overs. I like Romance just fine, but I've got to be in the mood for one (usually am just looking for a light, easy read). I don't mind reading the SF-themed romances, but if I'm in the SF section of the bookstore, I really would prefer something a bit more hefty.

Well... These books have a LOT of Romance in them, but also enough story and action and complexity to be satisfying on the SF level as well.

I have to admit I used to really enjoy the Space Opera genre of past decades. I think Catherine Asaro is doing her job to keep that alive single-handedly. Sinclair's books have a lot of the old Space Opera feel. Good space adventure with battles and intrigue and interplanetary travel mixed in--with good characters and personal relations mixed in.

This particular story also has quite a Star Wars like feel (first trilogy, 4-6), which was odd at times, but also good. (Most of it was due to the term "droids" and the presence of a protocol droid that talked too much.)

The heroine is a rough and tumble girl from the wrong side of the tracks, running solo in her own rust-bucket of a ship, engaging in suspect trading runs. The hero crash-lands almost in her lap, a dangerous military type engaged in an interstellar war. And of course, these two opposites attract when they find mysterious plots against their peoples --and involving them personally.

So if you like Romance mixed with your SF, or even just a good old-fashioned SF adventure, I'd give this a try!

4 out of 5 stars Everything but the 'Droid.......2007-06-08

I had a good time with this book, which was very much a mainstream romance novel. I can deal. What got me though was the blatant C-3P0 "homage". It was the one part of the whole story that made me just groan.

Aliens are very alien and overall, this had a nice Cold War feel to it, complete with a language that had a bit of a Russian twang to it. It's a good fluff read.

1 out of 5 stars Not SciFi.......2007-05-31

I really don't mind a bit of romance in SciFi, otherwise I wouldn't have enjoyed Miles Vorkosigan series or Liaden series. However, this is practically pure romance and worse, predictable and cliche romance.

I've picked this and another book by Linnea Sinclair (games of command) since they ended up on many lists which contain books I liked. I actually wondered at some places whether I am reading the same book. Short, blonde, spunky green eyed heroine and tall muscular dark hero, intensely attracted to each other, have lots of misunderstandings because he is a supersoldier lab product, and she is ashamed of her origin. Eventually of course there is a happy ending, after lots of "action" which doesn't make sense, with poor descriptions of politics, enemies, and battles. Blech.

In case I've failed to mention it in the past, I love romantic science fiction. For my own personal taste, there's always been a sorely lacking amount of good books in this genre. That's all changed, I'm happy to say! FINDERS KEEPERS by Linnea Sinclair takes romantic sci-fi to an all new level-a book that's equally balanced in the amount of science fiction, fantasy, high-tech gadgetry, plot, and romantic subplot that perfectly suits readers of both the male and female sex.

FINDERS KEEPERS was an absolutely brilliant choice of title. In the world of salvage, whether you're talking sunken pirate ships, undiscovered lost cities, or the wreckage from a Trahtark `Sko fighting vessel that has the bad fortune to crash into a planet, first come, first served. For lucky Captain Trilby Elliot, she gets the up-close-and-personal front row seat to the ships destruction, and hightails it on over to be the first to root through the wreckage. With her trusty DZ-9 Droid, Dezi, Trilby prepares to make off with the highly profitable, and somewhat dangerous, intergalactic garbage.

All would have been fine and dandy-and lucrative-if not for the fact that the ship's pilot, Imperial Senior Captain Rhis Vanur, a Zafharian military commander, who gives arrogance a bad name, is still alive, breathing, and kicking. Not to mention cursing. Trilby and Dezi have no idea what a Zafharian is doing in a Ycsko ship, and Rhis isn't in any hurry to enlighten them. Once he realizes that Trilby wasn't, in fact, taking him to the Conclave Security on the Quivera Station, he lightens up-but not by much. He still can't tell her who he really is. If he did, she'd immediately remember all the nicknames that had been attributed to him over the years. Even more so, she might fully understand why he was on that `Sko ship, and what he hoped to accomplish.

Emotions and tongues are both brittle as Trilby and Rhis butt heads over any and everything. Trilby's been doing just fine as an independent trader of the-mostly-legal kind. And as for Rhis, whose been engineered to show no emotion and focus only on his goal, this sharp-tongued she-devil is something he never bargained for. But now, they're both on the run from the `Sko, getting in deeper and deeper over their heads. Not only lives are at stake, but that of nations, as well.

A wonderful book by Ms. Sinclair, FINDERS KEEPERS is not to be missed. Science fiction at its best, filled with delightful characters and a hard-boiled plot, make this book one you'll be glad you found first.

5 out of 5 stars Great food for talk.......2007-10-02

When I received a review copy of this from the publisher, I showed it to my wife and said, "Look at this--it's a book about modesty". Our daughter, then just 14 years old, grabbed it out of my hand, said "I want to read it", sat down on the floor of our kitchen, read it straight through, emailed two or three of her best friends, and let each of them read it. This sparked a year-long on-and-off conversation about relationships, attractiveness, modesty, desire, and how guys and girls think. Now that these girls are in college, we continue to have good conversations about these vital issues of life. I highly recommend this to any parents of young girls (11-14 years old), and recommend that you read it, too.

5 out of 5 stars Must Have and Then Share for Teen Girls.......2007-08-05

Though many Christian dating/love related books mention modesty, none really clarify it and what it's about. This book is the much needed voice to change all that.

I think the biggest problem with modesty in a lot of Christian girls is simply unawareness of the problem. This book does an excellent job of teaching girls to protect their beauty, help their brothers in Christ not to sin, and overall giving insight into purity and saving yourself for your spouse.

Dannah is very understanding of - but it's fashion! and comes up with lots of hip and fun alternatives, but yet she's encouraging of simple jeans and tees too.

I read in another review the comment of 'the picture on the back of the book is not modest by God's standards'. Though I will not say that is untrue, none of the photos in this book are eye-catchingly unmodest and I would guess this is more of a guy needing to watch issue than the girl in the picture being so immodest.

Eye-opening, and excellent and easy to read book! You will return many times.

5 out of 5 stars AWESOME!.......2007-07-03

This book is so awesome! I would give it 10 stars if I could! It has taught me lots of things about modesty. Now I have a whole new perspective on how I dress, and what it does in guys minds. This book has changed my life, and the way I dress.

5 out of 5 stars good little book.......2007-05-13

small book, important message! you can read this book in like an hour, its only 90 pages long. This book is clear on how exactly to be modest and demand other's respect by respecting yourself. It talks about how modesty is not just what you wear, but how you act. You should definately buy this book.

5 out of 5 stars right on.......2006-12-20

She is direct, reasonable, mature, and friendly. It is a smart girl's guide to thinking through the decisions many girls allow the crowd to make for them.

5 out of 5 stars WOW!.......2006-10-07

What a neat book and kit to use with your daughter! One thing the description doesn't say very well is the kit includes a mom guide, a secret keeper girl diary and cd and stickers. When you select it above it also suggests you should buy the diary. (I ended up with an extra diary to return...bummer)

Cool book. - The cd is a neat addition to the date night.

5 out of 5 stars Also Great As A Girls' Small Group.......2005-04-22

My daughter (10) and I invited three of her friends and their moms to join us as we journey through this book and its companion, Secret Keeper: The Delicate Power of Modesty. As a small group, we are having so much fun and learning so much about each other. We meet one week and discuss the concepts from the books and plan our date and then we have our date on another night. We are planning this as a year-long journey, so there is no rush.

If you are interested in using this in a small group environment, I would recommend limiting the numbers to 3 or 4 additional girls and their respective moms. Our girls all know each other, but coincidentally they do not attend the same school, church or social events. Therefore, they have expressed how "safe" they feel sharing their feelings and concerns and knowing that it's not going to get spread around. The moms have to feel safe too, as you never know what your daughter might share out of the blue. The more you can work together with the other mothers, the better the conversation can flow. Keep asking questions and truly listen. In a safe, honest environment, you'll be amazed what you will learn and how open your daughters are to the message of modesty and learning who they really are - not who the world says they ought to be. Enjoy the journey with your daughter.

5 out of 5 stars Diary and Book of Beauty.......2004-07-21

Dannah Gresh has created a set of books that are completed with a CD by Rebecca St. James. This is a book set for 8-12 year old girls who are interested in inner and outer beauty. There are eight fun ideas for things like tea, parties, facials and shopping trips. The Diary has lined pages and "devotional-style" paragraphs for contemplation.

The Secret Keeper Girl book seems to be a "planning book" for moms and also includes information on fashion, like information on false advertising and the example of Kate Winslet's picture on GQ.

I remember my mother sending me to a class that talked about the subjects in this book, but I can tell you, this book is way more fun! You give your daughter the Diary book and she can listen to the CD.
