    Book Description

A Raisin in the Sun is the first play by a black woman to be produced in a Broadway theater. First performed in 1959, before the civil rights and women's movements came to the fore, it raises issues of segregation, family strife, and relationships between men and women that are both representative of the time and timeless in their universality. This interdisciplinary collection of commentary and forty-five primary documents will enrich the reader's understanding of the historical and social context of the play. A wide variety of primary materials sheds light on integration and segregation in the 1950s and 1960s; relationships between African Americans and Africans; relationships between men and women within African American culture; Chicago as a literary setting for the play; and contemporary race relations in the 1990s. Documents include first-person accounts, magazine articles and editorials espousing opposing arguments, excerpts from the works of Toni Morrison, W.E.B. DuBois, Marcus Garvey, bell hooks, Malcolm X, and Richard Wright, and a selection of pertinent government documents and eye-opening statistics. Many of the documents are available in no other printed form. Each chapter concludes with study questions and topics for research papers and class discussion, as well as lists of further reading for examining the themes and issues raised by the play. The casebook begins with a literary analysis of the play, its themes and dramatic structure. Two chapters on the historical context provide commentary and documents on the history of segregation and integration in the United States, focusing on segregation in employment and education as well as in housing, and relationships between African Americans and Africans and the back to Africa movement. A chapter situates the play within the context of the literature of Chicago, including articles about race problems, as well as excerpts from Upton Sinclair's The Jungle, Richard Wright's Native Son, Carl Sandburg's poem "Chicago," and other pieces. The topic of the relationship between African American men and women is explored in a variety of articles on the African American family, black fatherhood, black masculinity, and the problems of African American women. A chapter on contemporary race relations examines the current situation and includes first-person accounts by two African American teenagers, current employment statistics for African Americans, and articles on current problems facing them. Each document is preceded by an explanatory introduction, and each chapter concludes with study questions and topics for research papers and class discussion, as well as lists of further reading for examining the themes and issues raised by the play.

5 out of 5 stars First in the Roman Series.......2006-11-20

Paul Doherty is the consummate professional when it comes to writing historical novels. I for one do not know how he can be so prolific with his offering of books and yet make sure that each of them is well researched. Whether they be 13th, 14th, or fifteenth century they are always true to the period. He also writes about Ancient Egypt and Alexander the Great. Paul Doherty has the rare talent of making you feel as though you are there, be it medieval England, or battling with Alexander. The sounds and smells of the period seem to waft from the pages of his books. He has now turned his attention to Ancient Rome and this is the first book in the series.

Agrippina was the wife of Claudius and the mother of perhaps the most hated Emperor Rome had ever had (or so the history books would have us believe). She was a stunningly beautiful woman, but talented too. She led a privileged but traumatic life. She saw her own father murdered. She was then banished by her brother and was killed on the orders of a son, when the balance of his mind was undoubtedly in question.

This is her story, told by her freed man, Parmenon, a one-eyed former gladiator. He tells of Agrippina's constant battle to survive in the depraved and violent Imperial Roman court and also her attempts to stem the crumbling relationship between herself and her son.

5 out of 5 stars Paul Doherty at his best.......2005-01-22

Having read a number of Doherty's historical/mystery novels, I came to read 'Domina'with thoughts that it would be of similar ilk to the others - entertaining. I like Doherty's style.
Domina is entertaining - and much more. With this novel there is more a sense of history and its drama. The author brings to life an Agrippina The Younger who is every bit the scheming and manipulative woman we've read about, but also a more 'earthier' person - believable. She is a survivor! Daughter of the hero Germanicus and Agrippina The Elder - an overbearing mother of the first order! Sister of Caligula. Wife to the emperor Claudius ( her uncle and well known lecher)and then mother to Nero. How's that for a disfunctional family!
In Doherty's tale I felt some sympathy for Agrippina, despite her own devious behaviour. This was encouraged by the story being told by her confidant and life-long admirer - Parmenion. Historical fact abounds here entwined with gripping drama vividly told.
    His best historical novel yet!

    Book Description

The steady expansion of college enrollment rates over the last generation has been heralded as a major step toward reducing chronic economic disparities. But many of the policies that broadened access to higher education--including affirmative action, open admissions, and need-based financial aid--have come under attack in recent years by critics alleging that schools are admitting unqualified students who are unlikely to benefit from a college education. In Passing the Torch, Paul Attewell, David Lavin, Thurston Domina, and Tania Levey follow students admitted under the City University of New York's "open admissions" policy, tracking its effects on them and their children, to find out whether widening college access can accelerate social mobility across generations. Unlike previous research into the benefits of higher education, Passing the Torch follows the educational achievements of three generations over 30 years. The book focuses on a cohort of women who entered CUNY between 1970 and 1972, when the university began accepting all graduates of New York City high schools and increasing its representation of poor and minority students. The authors survey these women in order to identify how the opportunity to pursue higher education affected not only their long-term educational attainments and family well-being, but also how it affected their children's educational achievements. Comparing the record of the CUNY alumnae to peers nationwide, the authors find that when women from underprivileged backgrounds go to college, their children are more likely to succeed in school and earn college degrees themselves. Mothers with a college degree are more likely to expect their children to go to college, to have extensive discussions with their children, and to be involved in their children's schools. All of these parenting behaviors appear to foster higher test scores and college enrollment rates among their children. In addition, college-educated women are more likely to raise their children in stable two-parent households and to earn higher incomes; both factors have been demonstrated to increase children's educational success.

The evidence marshaled in this important book reaffirms the American ideal of upward mobility through education. As the first study to indicate that increasing access to college among today's disadvantaged students can reduce educational gaps in the next generation, Passing the Torch makes a powerful argument in favor of college for all.

5 out of 5 stars Broad Scope without Losing Depth.......2007-05-27

It is often difficult to find studies that offer a longitudinal look at education and its impact on families. Not only do the authors look across generations of families to determine how higher education increases life chances, but they support conclusions from their own dataset against a national dataset. Equally impressive was the division by race; the focus on racial differences eliminated problems frequently found in other studies. In addition, the format of the book was accessible to the scholar and layman alike. Overall, this book was well written and based on sound research. It seems guaranteed to become a pivotal work in family and education.

5 out of 5 stars a history lesson with a spoonful of sugar.......2006-01-16

An apparently well-researched overview of the developments of late-19th-century medicine, wrapped in a quasi-romantic feminist story. I picked this up in the swap-library at my office, and it was just a stroke of good fortune because I happened to be writing a book myself set in 1880, in which one of the characters was a woman doctor. This novel is an engaging read and a good starting point from which to delve into Victorian life and medicine. Since I've been doing deeper research I've found that most of the character's demi-lectures on medical progress were accurate as well as interesting.

Of course, it's also an early-eighties epic melodrama; there's plenty of tragedy and sweeping romance: mysterious benefactors and lost loves and the typical disadvantaged childhood to overcome. The romance subplot is occasionally overwrought, when the hero declares his love and the music swells and they fall into each other's arms--it's a tad out-of-step with the tone of the rest of the book, but mercifully those moments are kept to a minimum. It's not a great book, but it's good, and I liked it enough I figure I'll read it again.

5 out of 5 stars Enjoyable adventure from start to finish!.......2005-06-16

I first read this in high school and fell in love with the epic nature -- it has the multi-continent travels, the whole-hearted passion for life and love, and all the "girl-power" a teenage girls craves! I would have kept it on my shelf for sentimental reasons alone, but having re-read it as an adult, I love it for more reasons than that. The idea of triumph over tragedy and healing is so touching -- even more so now that I have few life-scars myself! Worth the investment of time and any suspension of disbelief required to dive into Samantha Hargrave's heart and life. In my top 10!

    5 out of 5 stars awesome..........2005-01-12

this book is awesome... it combines historical fiction with romance... it's almost as though you're there at the turn of the 20th century experiencing life back then through our herione's eyes... it's action packed and very moving... i love how realistic the descriptions are... the most amazing part of the book is the details about the state of medical knowledge back then, which was very crude, to say the least... if you're out for a great, inspiring read, pick this book up, you won't be disappointed...

3 out of 5 stars Heavy on feminism, light on dialogue.......1998-08-19

This, I understand, was Barbara Wood's first foray into literature, and pretty good for a first effort. Even as a woman myself, however, I found the feminist tone rather overwhelming. Such stuff was highly fashionable during the early eighties, when this book first came out. The style seemed more melodramatic than I like, and the dialogue sometimes shallow, sometimes contrived. Samantha Hargrave's life story is too crushing. The best things about this book, which I first read a few years ago and just finished for the second time, were the anecdotal presentation of what it was like for a woman to struggle through medical school and beyond in the late nineteenth century, and the haunting love story. Out of the dozens and dozens of books I have read, this is one of the comparative few that has made it into my personal collection.

5 out of 5 stars Uplifting story of a woman battling against the odds.......1998-01-10

Can't believe this book is out of print. Have just found it on someones bookshelf, and was anxious to read it after having read Virgins of Paradise. I loved this book. Barbara Wood's female characters are strong and yet constantly feminine. I particularly enjoy the way in which Ms Wood entwines such rich historical content and topics into her stories. I am impressed by the extensive research she must undertake.

    4 out of 5 stars Bayba's Before the 100 BJs.......2007-03-11

Bayba, the waifish, pre-op transsexual is back. This time we see her before the events of the 100 BJs. Bayba is making a film. She is teamed with another pro-op known as the Red Domina. At first she has little good to say about the red-clad woman but then Bayba's performances get to the producer and Bayba becomes top banana while Red Domina plays second fiddle. But eventually the two do develop a relationship as their film careers take them deeper into the seamier and kinkier side of the adult sleaze industry.

This is similar to Bayba's first appearance with lots of quick scenes but there is more story here than before. As with the first Bayba story, men are all depicted as pigs. Literally. They are drawn with the heads of pigs. The action is similar to the first book crossing similar lines of kink and taste. Bayba's co-star is something else. She is drawn to be very much the opposite of Bayba. She is taller, darker, bigger, larger breasted, larger endowed, less virile, and far less articulate (sometimes its hard to figure out what she is saying). If you liked the first book you will probably not be disappointed by this one. If you didn't like the first then I don't see why you would like this one any better. Check it out. Or not.

5 out of 5 stars "Domina" by Dr. Gloria Brame -- Class "A" Book.......2001-09-25

Thank you Dr Brame for such a wonderful novel!

I found the book "Domina" for be very erotic, and highly intense. This was one book I picked up and couldn't put down until I finished reading it, more than once, I might add.

I am so forward to the sequel and learning even more from your all of your writings.

I have been and will continue to recommend your novel and your many other works.

Many thanks to you, Dr. Brame!!

2 out of 5 stars Clueless in the Midwest.......2000-03-07

There seems to be a little bit of everything here for everyone into or curious about BDSM. But forget about the sexually graphic content; you like it or you don't. What of this work as literature or cultural commentary? If you knew the liberating non-fiction works of Ms Brame previously, you like I might have expected some sort of literary manifesto from this author. Instead it was just a long, sometimes tediously titillating narrative of what goes on in such places, albeit an ideal one, with unrelenting rudeness towards the pathetic anti-hero as the central focus. The ending was surprising, or more properly, unexpected, because it didn't really arise organically out of the groundwork laid out by the novel. I was troubled by the lack of ethics implied by the final resolution. [...] I must be listed among the clueless as well, because I found nothing liberating about this novel.

1 out of 5 stars Not worth the money or the time........1999-06-16

A very cold and unreadable book by an author who should know better. None of the characters are likable and you don't care what happens to them which violates the first rule of writing: Make your readers care about your characters.

The first chapter sets the bar very low in style and characterization and the rest of the following chapters don't clear the hurdle set. Too many of the characters ruin the clumsy story line and obscure whatever mood that is trying to be created. The flow of the book is erratic and fails to envelope the reader in the world it has created. A good editor would have spotted this and sent it back for another rewrite. One does shudder to think that this book was actually rewritten a couple of times and is not the first draft of the novel. Apparently the erotica market is devoid of editors or filled with third rate ones who are only interested in the quick buck.

Only the most desperate bdsm fantasist or sychophant will appreciate this novel. It isn't very erotic and often times it is dull. If I was a first time reader of this type of subject, I would never read the genre again. Fortunately there are better writers whose works elevate the genre. If Ms Brame wishes to inflict more pain on readers, she should go ahead with her plans to produce a sequel.

1 out of 5 stars reinforcing negative stereotypes.......1999-03-08

I was really looking forward to this book. Having read Different Loving several years ago, frankly I expected much more from this author.

First, the main male character is made out to be a wimpy, drifting, whiny idiot. Now how much credit is that giving male submissives? Most of the other "slaves" in this book had stories in their past relating something that made them "damaged". How about showing someone with a healthy past who enjoys S/M for the sheer fun and eroticism of it?

and of course when he gets to the fantasy castle, he's forced to make a decision based on very little knowledge, and is immediately plunged into the heaviest of S/M lifestyles. Give me a break! How about negotiation and informed consent? What about a healthy, communicative relationship instead of one that borders on the emotionally abusive?

I thought this just reinforced negative stereotypes that already abound, of the submissive or "bottom" in a BDSM relationship being someone weak, unwilling to stand on their own, and using the Top as a crutch.

the ending also left me cold. It made me sad for all of us who have to live with this portrayal of a kink that we practice in a healthy and loving way.

Incidentally, Gloria Braeme's NONfiction is still highly recommended - she deals with various kinks in a sensitive and non-judgemental manner. But I wish she'd stick to nonfiction.

5 out of 5 stars another great book by Ms. Gloria Brame.......1999-02-21

this is the "real thing," with real characters i could identify with. the scenes were so hot i couldn't believe a woman could see that far into a man's mind. She really goes deep inside the mind of Arden (malesub who is the main character). i identified with him totally. as i read i felt like She was looking into my soul with a magnifying glass. i never read a D/s book before where feelings were explored in so much detail. i humbly thank Her for that. i read it all in one sitting. i plan to read it again and again. maybe this way i won't make the same mistakes thas Arden makes. i learned something from it.

        Book Description

Since its publication in 1977, Leslie Marmon Silko's Ceremony has become one of the most frequently assigned and important literary works in the expanded canon. It has garnered praise and respect both as a masterpiece of American fiction and for its contributions to the growing field of Native American literature. This casebook helps readers appreciate the work for both its literary merit and its exploration of important cultural and historical themes and topics. The initial chapter offers a fresh literary analysis of the novel, with discussion of character and thematic development. Four topical chapters interweave essays with primary documents that situate the work within historical contexts and ongoing contemporary issues. Chapter 2 takes the reader to the heart of the Laguna Pueblo with historical accounts, including a chronology and excerpts from several treaties dating back to 1848, and cultural perspectives based on epics and legends, daily life sketches, and traditional arts and crafts. Other historical context chapters explore the impact of World War II-- particularly the development of the atomic bomb--and traditional Native American spiritual and healing practices. The final chapter of this casebook takes a close look at issues of social welfare and problems of alcohol both historically and in contemporary contexts. Western views of medicine are juxtaposed and compared to traditional Native American attitudes and practices. Each chapter in this casebook relates an important thematic topic from Ceremony to its broader social and cultural concerns. Readers are invited to move beyond the text to consider the different perspectives offered by various experts and by people who directly experienced the developments described. Essays help make the connection between the text and the documents that offer these firsthand and historical experiences. Teachers will find numerous ways to incoporate these materials in the classroom for discussions and assignments. Suggested topics and questions are provided with each chapter for educational applications. Further suggested readings enhance this work as a research and learning tool.
