Book Description
Mike Campbell thoroughly and cleary examines the many eyewitness accounts by U.S. servicemen and natives who saw Amelia Earhart, Fred Noonan and their plane on the island of Saipan after the time the U.S. government declared the Electra to have crashed at sea.

Alex V. Mandel.......2004-02-29
I am interested in Amelia Earhart and her disappearance mystery for 21 years. I have read this book and my impression is very positive.
During decades there were a lot of books, articles etc. written about this subject (Earhart's disappearance), but alas too frequently they were overflooded by rumors, baseless guesses, stretches and speculations without any firm factual support.
The Mike Campbell's book is principally different. It is based on firm first-hand evidence from many independent sources, whose credibility gives no food for doubts - there are former US Soldiers, who really were on the place of events and saw what they saw.
The book is free of guesses and speculations - authors doesn't builds some "versions" or "theories" but just presents the data obtained by them during many years from many independent sources, with extensive details, and the book includes many written reports and official documents.
As result the book gives a very complete and convincing picture about What Happened with Amelia Earhart. The book is written with clear accuracy and respect to facts and to the "subject" of the book - the great heroine of 20th century and US history, whose name alas was already too frequently used for unfair speculations of any sorts. Mike Campbell's book makes an extremely good job for to correct this sad error.
I would highly recommend this book for anybody interested in this great mystery.

Photographers: note the photos, and the stark parallel images of trees versus factory stacks. They make the point of the entire book in dramatic thought-provoking images that make you want to go out and stop every smoke-producer in the world.

Book Description
Readers join desperate pilots in the cockpit as they fight gravity and time in a plane that's falling out of the sky.
Anyone who watches the news knows about the "black box." Officially called the cockpit voice recorder, the black box (which is actually Day-glo orange) records the final moments of any in-flight accident. Often it provides the only explanation of a crash -- inevitably, it provides a heart-breaking, second-by-second account of intense fear tempered by unyielding professionalism.
This 1984 Quill title has been completely updated to include twenty-eight new incidents occurring between 1978 and 1996. Some are famous, like the 1996 Valujet crash in the Everglades and the ill-fated launch of the space shuttle Challenger; other disasters range from commuter prop aircraft to jumbo airliners and a pair of Air Force planes. Few have ever been revealed in their entirety, each, without exception, is absolutely gripping.
In this new edition, editor Malcolm MacPherson has, wherever possible, added weather notes and descriptions of events in the cockpit and cabin, heightening our vivid sense of being there during the final moments. Provided by the National Transportation Safety Board and vetted by an experienced airline captain, these are unforgettable case studies in ultimate emergency -- authentic, immediate, filled with drama, terror, human frailty and error, and unquenchable courage.
Customer Reviews:
Nothing new.......2006-08-14
If you spent any time reviewing CVRs, then there is nothing new in this book. Although there are several inaccuracies/mistakes, the worst part of the book is that it gives almost zero insight into what happened in each case. A short one page write-up at the end of each CVR would really help this book.
PLAGIARISM.......2006-04-12
This collection of CVR transcripts from air crashes and near misses is a huge waste of money. MacPherson just reproduces excerpts from the transcripts that can be found on the internet at the NTSB website and many other sites. In their complete form and for free. His short paragraphs of explanations of the incidents involved add nothing to the book because it is obvious that the author knows nothing of aviation. If you are a true student of air crashes, look up the complete accident reports on the NTSB website or avsaf.org or a number of other sites. These are free and much more informative. Black Box is a cheap excuse for jounalism. I'd actually give it less than 1 star if I could.[...]
Compelling Reading.......2005-10-25
I suspect the reviewers who were looking for excruciating details are more of the anorak/spotter/enthusiast persuasion than certificated fliers. Personally I found many of the transcripts contained lessons that will certainly follow me into the cockpit. The CVR transcripts also show a level of professionalism and skill that I think the flying public is by and large oblivious of.
It helps to know about the crash before you read this book.......2005-09-01
Unfortunately, there is nothing new in this book. For the most part everything in the book, except for the few comments provided by the author, is available on line and most sites include much more detail. The CVR in and of itself does not tell the whole story and a little more background on each of these disiasters would have helped to make this a much better book. If you are not familiar with the accidents in question this book will do more to confuse and create questions than to provide you with insight and information.
The "Wrong Stuff".......2005-08-09
Having read many different variations of these books, it is my humble opinion that this particular edition tends to treat the reader as a layman, rather than as a pilot, or at least someone versed in the aviation lingo. The author also includes unhealthy doses of vulgarity in the transcripts, which does occur in cockpits from time to time, but I wouldn't want the pilot's next of kin to know their loved-one's 'salty' mode of speech is being read by total strangers. There are better, more informational offerings of this type. "Aftermath", published by the editors of Flying Magazine, is a good example. "Air Disasters" by Stanley Stewart is a very thorough, technically precise treatise on several major aircraft accidents. Mr. Stewart is an actual aircraft accident investigator, and his personal knowledge of the field greatly enhances the accuracy of his published mishap investigations and findings. "Black Box" is entertaining, and the inclusion of the Space Shuttle Challenger voice transcripts is a welcome addition to the considerable list of entries. Nevertheless, the salient theme of this volume is to relate aviation data to the non-flying public.
Book Description
Nearly every World War II fighter squadron that flew in Europe has had its history chronicled. Other than "Pappy" Boyington's famous VMF-214 "Black Sheep", little has been written about Marine Corps squadrons in World War II. The contribution of VMF-223, the "Death Rattlers", over Okinawa in the Spring of 1945 is virtually unknown. In two months there, the squadron became the top-scoring unit of any service with 124 1/2 victories and produced 12 aces, the most for one tour of any Marine squadron. The squadron downed 24 3/4 Japanese aircraft twice in its tour, the most for a single Marine squadron in any single action. The squadron's story is not only one of its pilots, combat, and valor, but also of the enlisted men, "the ground-crunchers," who made it function against the Japanese kamikaze menace. Along with the traditional historical perspective, it is an inside look at the personal side of training and war. It is the story of a group of untried young men who trained long and hard and became "family.", over 420 b/w photographs, 8 1/2" x 11"
Book Description
Can modern science tell us what happened to Amelia Earhart? The International Group for Historic Aircraft Recovery (TIGHAR) has spent fifteen years searching for the famous lost pilot using everything from archival research and archaeological survey to side-scan sonar and the analysis of radio wave propagation. In this spellbinding book, four of TIGHAR's scholars offer tantalizing evidence that the First Lady of the Air and her navigator Fred Noonan landed on an uninhabited tropical island but perished before they could be rescued. Do they have Amelia's shoe? Parts of her airplane? Are her bones tucked away in a hospital in Fiji? Come join their fascinating expedition and examine the evidence for yourself! The new paperback edition brings the search up to the present, including tantalizing evidence of campfires and charred bones found on remote Nikumaroro.

"The Forensic Search for Amelia Earhart".......2007-09-04
"Amelia Earhart's Shoes: Is the Mystery Solved?", Udated 2004 Ed., Thomas F. King, et al., AltaMira Press, NY 2001, ISBN: 0-7591-0131-0, PB 374 pgs., plus 23 pg. Notes, 9 pg. Biblio., 20 pg. Index, & 104 B & W photos, illus. or maps., 6" x 9".
This is an academic work by a contingent of skilled scientific experts whose writings & basic investigative work was coordinated, in part & on behalf of TIGHAR (Int. Group of Historical Aircraft Recovery) & updated 2004. The 27 chapters describe a forensic approach to solve the mystery of aviatrix AE's disappearance enroute 2,223 miles to Howland Isle from Lae, New Guinea, July 2, 1937.
The book's format & length makes for difficult reading: -- it is based on best available scientific evidences & hypotheses of multiple disciplines of archeology, geophysics, aeronautics, anthropology, and review of both private & governmental archival information in addition to tabulating their search findings on tiny remote South Pacific Phoenix Isle "Gardner", but renamed Nikumaroro, or "Niku". Author was a principle TIGHAR investigator taking part in expeditions to Niku, & he writes with authority, -- having "been there, done that!"
Inclusion of more than 100 photos, illustrations, maps, etc., makes the reading more easily understood & tolerable: -- for it is not a book one picks up and being enchanted 'reads from cover to cover' without pause. For readers who want an up-to-date analysis of AE's disappearance this book is best read after the reader is thoroughly familiar with AE's character, avocations, skills, life experiences's and accolades by the press, politicians & the powerful, -- for Amelia was a complex person living in exciting, changing times on the cutting edge of new technologies.
Many of the chapters begin with stanzas of word parodies to be sung to certain melodies, attributable to TIGHAR but not author King. The parodies I found to be highly irregular, unsettling & not in best taste, so downgraded book from 5* to 4*.
Welcome back, TIGHARs.......2006-10-27
Those persistent TIGHARs are back with more suggestive but inconclusive research about what happened to Amelia Earhart, who disappeared in 1937 -- somewhere.
Every so often, somebody shows up in Hawaii with a kooky theory about Earhart, ranging from shot by the Japanese as a spy to still alive and keeping house in New Jersey.
The International Group for Historical Aircraft Recovery is far from kooky.
For one thing, they appear to have managed the trick of being zealous without becoming zealots. As lead author Thomas King puts it, "Most people have more pressing things to do" than hunt for a lost airplane that, given the odds, would more likely than not be under three miles of water.
The TIGHARs work, for free, in their spare time, on the assumption that, despite the geographical odds, Earhart and her navigator Fred Noonan didn't just run out of gas and sink under the ocean. They think Earhart missed her target but may have crash landed on an intermittently inhabited (but in 1937 empty) island named Nikumaroro, where Earhart and Noonan might have either survived for a while or been eaten by crabs.
It's "a mystery that can't be put down," King says.
But hard to pin down.
Since the publication of "Amelia Earhart's Shoes" in 2001, the TIGHARs have run down more physical evidence, including things that look a lot like panels from a Lockheed Electra, but nothing definitive yet. The revised, 2005 edition is preferred over the first edition.
The story of the hunt also reveals a great deal of fascinating information about the South Pacific, which is big, mostly empty and weird.
HOW you solve the mystery is just as important.......2006-09-26
Who says historical research and science have to be boring? In Amelia Earhart's Shoes, Dr. Tom King and others take us on a winding (sometimes loopy, even!) journey that tries to answer the question: What happened to famed aviatrix Amelia Earhart and renowned navigator Fred Noonan in 1937 after they vanished during her around-the-world flight attempt?
Amelia Earhart's Shoes does not pretend to solve the mystery - it does show that by applying the scientific method to a popular event, you can strip away all the myths and fables and assumptions and come up with relatively simple explanations that can be tested to see if they are true or false. That the scientific method may upset a few of those legendary apple carts along the way is proof that it works - something is either true or not true, provable or not provable. In Earhart's case, the truth may turn out to be much more mundane than some of the more colorful "solutions" to her disappearance would have us believe.
There is a lot of information in Shoes, but it is presented in an easy to read, almost chatty style (think ghost stories around the campfire while making s'mores) that keeps you turning the pages to see what the heck is going to happen next. The International Group for Historic Aircraft Recovery (TIGHAR) has now been to the South Pacific eight times to try and prove or disprove their hypothesis that Earhart and Noonan missed their destination, tiny Howland Island, and landed on another deserted island, only to die (or perhaps be completely missed) before the frantic searchers could get to them.
Amelia Earhart's Shoes is a great read that should be on the bookshelf of everyone interested in what really did happen out there in the vastness of the Pacific Ocean almost 70 years ago.
Fantastic, not at all dry!.......2006-05-02
I saw one of the people involved in this project speak at EAA's big national air show in Oshkosh, WI last summer. It was the most popular lecture session I attended while I was there. Interested, I picked up this book expecting a thorough but dry, academic read.
Was I ever wrong! This book is not only fascinating, it's funny! It's written with some dry humor that made me want to keep reading more. And the authors lay out a strong argument, to boot. It does make one wonder...
I Couldn't Put This Book Down!.......2002-05-03
I picked up this book at my library on a lark. I've always been interested in what really happened to Amelia Earhart, but always just assumed that her plane crashed into the ocean. This book, however, completely opened my eyes to a new hypothosis: that Amelia and her navigator managed to land on an island and send out radio signals for help. The information presented in this book isn't just wild guesses and conspiracy theories - the authors make a point of backing up their thoughts with cold, hard evidence. I was hooked from the first page and got so engrossed that I ended up not doing my work at my job just so that I could finish a few more chapters. The book also has a wicked sense of humor and debunks the myth that scientists are just stodgy old guys. I'd reccomend this book to anyone with even an ounce of curosity. I'm holding my breath until Dr. Tom King and the other authors put out another book on Amelia. I can't wait to see what they find!

Customer Reviews:
It's just a fun read!.......2007-07-29
This one will make you feel just a little more comfortable for a while. Kate Kingsbury has an Agatha Christie-like sense of humor. And, BTW, she answers emails - nice touch.
An enjoyable mystery, a bit weak at times.......2003-05-26
Death is in the air will probably satisfy most fans of this series about the English village of Sitting Marsh during World War II. Lady Elizabeth Compton Hartleigh is the lady of the Manor House and also the protector and unofficial leader of the village. Her sense of duty toward the citizens of Sitting Marsh leads her to become involved in solving various murders. This time, a German pilot has landed in the village and disappeared. Shortly after, a young girl's body is found and everyone blames the pilot, except for Lady Elizabeth, who is determined to find out the truth. Along the way, she continues her efforts to encourage better relations between the American servicemen and the villagers. The unique time setting makes these books enjoyable, although it was fairly easy to figure out the murderer. There are also some inaccuracies, such as the reference at the end to a television show, when of course television didn't exist in the early 1940's. These are disappointing, but I would still recommend it for fans of wartime mysteries.
Death is in the Air.......2002-04-21
Mystery is very easily solved and it was a bit tiresome to have all the characters use the same phrases (`I reckon" "Yanks") over and over. But overall an acceptable addition to the series.
Disappointing Read.......2002-03-09
This book was a disappointment from beginning to end. I looked forward to reading what I thought would be a "cozy" British mystery. Unfortunately, Ms. Kingsbury does not seem to have a grasp on either the time period or the setting. The dialog for both the English characters and the American characters did not ring true. For example, many slang British terms seemed forced, such as "blighter" and "crikey" and and words that one would expect the English characters to use were not. In addition, Ms. Kingsbury has her American characters saying "I reckon"
frequently, which is clearly a phrase favored by the British. In addition, the writing lacks the rich descriptions and character observations of say Ruth Rendell or Dorothy Simpson. The murderer is obvious early on, so the mystery is not even intriguing. Finally, at the very end of the book, Lady Elizabeth is given two puppies by the American Major. The Major suggests she name them "George and Gracie" after two television characters. Television -- in the early 1940s?! It is this kind of lack of attention to detail that made the book a struggle to get through. Ms. Kingsbury should write about what she knows, and it is clear that England during World War II is not it.
Fun to read.......2001-11-11
Somewhat in the tradition of Agatha Christie, Kate Kingsbury captures a view of WWII Britain, not the bombed out London, the countryside.
Enjoyed the plot, read this book after I read the second in the series. That one was actually better, the characters were more developed.
It will be an interesting series--

Death In The Air.......2006-08-05
This is an essential primer for those who question the powers that be. It clearly shows the bad intentions of the present corrupt regime that is in power and the unbounded evil that underlies it residing in "science", "industry", "religion" and "education".A wide view of the picture, and very factual.
Death in the Air.......2002-10-17
How many have a feeling that something is wrong? Something that you just can't put your finger on, but you know something is wrong.
Your sick, your spouse is sick, your kids have behavioral problems or they are sick, a close relative or friend is sick. Everyone knows someone with cancer and if your over 40 you cannot remember knowing anyone sick or having cancer when you were a kid.
What if someone was to offer proof that there is something wrong and there is a reason why we are all sick?
This book will stop you in your tracks and (if your not careful) make you think. Finally an explanation, so interesting and compelling I couldn't put it down. Didn't (and still don't) want to believe that something this sinister is occurring.
With the tenacity of a trained researcher, Dr. Horowitz has carefully constructed a framework of evidence, which, if only taken half seriously, provides plausible reasons surrounding the state of our world and health.
High Wheat-to-Chaff Ratio.......2002-08-06
I recommend this book only with these caveats. Regardless of Horowitz's qualifications and meticulous references, this is still conspiracy lit, backed up by a mixture of conspiracy and mainstream sources. The reader can glean a lot of truth from this book about the man-made health hazards out there, but to swallow it all as true would not be smart. Unless Horowitz takes critical thinking more seriously, he'll never reach a wider audience. Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence. One example: the chapter on Bible code numerology. That kind of flakiness is what keeps conspiracy theory on the fringes.
Strong Medicine by Dr. Horowitz.......2002-03-19
Writers who posit conspiracy theories are always fighting an
uphill battle, because at least in the US most people are satisfied
with their lives and don't really want to know the truth. After all,
it might make them question their reality, it might knock them a bit
out of their comfort zones. You can hear them saying, "why, that can't
be possible, these kinds of crimes couldn't be covered up." Thus
conspiracy researchers have to present an enormous amount of documentation
to be given any credibility at all. Yet once again, Dr.Horowitz is more
than up to this challenge.
Dr. Horowitz has contended for years that the main agenda of the
globalists, the New World Order crowd, is to reduce the population of
the planet by as much as 50%, and make money off of it at the same time.
Referring to fellow conspiracy researcher David Icke, Horowitz discusses
the NWO agenda in terms of the Hegelian dialectic, which is the
thesis/anti-thesis/synthesis accounting for history's evolution. In
today's world this is better termed "problem-reaction-solution." That is,
the people in power create a problem, which causes the public to demand
action, at which point the NWO rolls out their already conceived
"solution."
The sub-title of "Death In The Air" provides a good foundation
to summarize this long, but highly readable, incredibly well-documented
book: "Globalism, Terrorism, & Toxic Warfare." The globalists are of
course the money masters - Dr. Horowitz focuses on the Rockefellers,
who have clearly wielded enormous power, owning many of the largest
oil companies, but also either serving in government themselves, or
putting cronies like Henry Kissinger into the seats of power in both
government and business.
As for terrorism, Dr. Horowitz provides numerous examples of
intentional testing of chemical and biological substances on peoples
throughout the world. He always names names, and provides precise
dates and locations. For example, on p. 81 he discusses how the
CIA-funded Evergreen Helicopters sprayed millions of gallons of
chemicals both in the US and abroad. This form of government-sponsored
terrorism is often directed at minorities, and many Native Americans
in Arizona became seriously ill due to these intrusuions.
Another example of terrorism (and toxic warfare) thoroughly
documented in "Death In The Air" are the two infamous CIA mind-control
projects, MKULTRA and MKNAOMI. It is widely known that former Nazis were
brought to the US, having received no punishment for their heinous crimes,
to teach US intelligence officials the techniques they learned from their
torturings.
By far the bulk of "Death In The Air" is devoted to exposing the
NWO's toxic warfare campaign, ironically often termed "non-lethal"
only because that term actually means that "only" a smaller percentage
of death than "lethal" warfare occurs! Never mind the harm done. And
what Dr. Horowitz does better than any researcher I have ever read is
that he presents the best evidence of all when trying to prove that
viruses and diseases like AIDS are no accident at all: he prints the
actual contracts and other documents in black and white (you might need
some reading glasses though!), which show as clearly as possible
that companies have been paid to create diseases! While some might
claim that these contracts are only circumstantial evidence, it is
impossible, at least for me, to believe that contracts which precede
the outbreaks of diseases are just "accidents." As well Dr. Horowitz
often provides excellent links between documentation and the actual
onset of medical disasters.
I am only scratching the surface of the vast wealth of topics
discussed in "Death In The Air." Others worth mentioning are HAARP
and other electromagetic devices, Tesla technologies, West Nile Virus,
vaccinations, and DNA as a frequency generator itself. I do not totally
agree with Dr. Horowitz's tying the NWO to the Biblical apocalypse, but
I must admit that his discussion of vaccinations, Kissinger, and 666,
is credible.
I more than highly recommend this very clear, well-written,
amazing compilation!
AMERICA, stop waving the flag and wake up!.......2002-02-02
The author is a Harvard grad, not a lunatic and his references are complete and real. This book is extremely researched and documented, both necessary to be credible considering what is discussed. The material presented is not what we are used to but cannot be denied. Things made more sense to me after reading this book, such as chemtrails, the fly sprayings in CA and the way the current government is manipulating the U.S. media following 9/11. After reading this book, I joined the NRA! America, stop having your head burried in the sand and wake up to what your government is REALLY up to before you loose your freedom to the "New World Order"
Book Description
The untold story of the Kamikaze pilots, a remarkable piece of military history and one of the most dramatic developments of World War II.
- Gripping real-life stories of life & death.
- Contains original material, interviews and new sources including excerpts from a never-before published suicide manual.
- Reports on survivors who have lived to tell the tale of the Second World War.
The use of Kamikaze pilots was one of the most dramatic and chilling developments of the Second World War. But who were the kamikaze pilots and what motivated them to give the ultimate sacrifice? Why was the practice initiated by the Japanese air force? This is the untold story of a remarkable development in military and world history. In this gripping account, Albert Axell explains that Kamikaze pilots were part of the national military policy of Japan during the 2nd World War. He writes that Japanese Vice Admiral Takashiro Ohnishi noted that the most effective way to inflict damage to warships was to crash planes into them. Those attacks took the American fleet completely by surprise - they were bewildered by the suicide missions and completely unable to comprehend the mentality behind them. We learn, however, that the call for kamikaze pilots drew a staggering response, with three times as many volunteers for suicide flights as the number of planes available. Kamikaze: The Untold Story sheds light on the world of the Kamikaze pilots, where they came from, what they were thinking about, how they looked at life and death, what they did in their last hours.
Albert Axell has done historical research in China, Japan, Mongolia and Russia and has written several books about these countries (including 'Russia's Heroes' and 'Stalin's War'). He also observed the Vietnam War as a journalist. During the Cold War years he met John F. Kennedy, Richard Nixon, and Brezhnev and has met thirty of Stalin's surviving generals.
Customer Reviews:
The Co-author is Japan's new Nazi.......2007-03-28
The co-author of this book, Mr. Hideaki Kase, is a right-wing Japanese revisionist who openly glorifies Japan's war crime during WWII and calls the horrific Nanking Massacre a fabrication. He also calls the "Comfort Women", women who were captured by the Japanese during WWII and were forced to be sex slaves for the Japanese Army, prostitutes. Not only Mr. Kase has little credibility in reviewing Japan's role during WWII, but also he is one of voice for the Nazi Japan.
Caveat to scholars........2002-12-15
A cross-cultural study should have a bibliography and footnotes/endnotes, so this is a caveat to scholars of East Asian history and the Pacific war in general: this book has neither, nor does it account for its sources, other than to offer "recommended readings." Since most of the works cited there are familiar, it's hard to say how much of the material here is original.
long overdue; a few flaws.......2002-09-09
This is the best study of the Japanese suicide pilots that I have read. With his Japanese co-author, Mr. Axell (who taught for a time in Japan) is able to get at Japanese-language sources and oral histories that have mostly been ignored by western scholars. This can be spellbinding stuff.
Unfortunately, the Japanese orientation leads them into many niggling errors that leap off the page to a western reader versed in military aviation. There's also a pro-Japanese bias in their presentation of material, especially when they strain to find parallels to the kamikaze in western air forces.
Excerpts from a kamikaze how-to manual are a chilling reminder to anyone who remembers the similar document carried by the al Qaeda suicide pilots of September 11, 2001.
Very much worth the reading, but take it with a grain of salt.

Glaring Inaccuracies.......2007-08-25
I read a borrowed copy of this book and am glad that I didnt spend my money on this. It is filled with emotion and not facts. Every year there are half a million or so people who make their first skydive (tandem or otherwise) and if this sport was truly as dangerous as this book would like you to believe we would have half a million people dead every year. Seriously, spend your money elsewhere if you are looking for a fictional / emotional rendering of reality.
misleading woman.......2006-05-09
This book is filled with inaccuracies (laughable inaccuracies to most skydivers), and she seems to not want to admit that her son was responsible for the accident that caused his death.
Some of the more choice things from the book:
- She thinks that waivers should not be allowed or mean anything.
- She thinks there is much money in skydiving instruction.
- She think the FAA "protects" skydiving.
- She thinks skydivers are egotistical because they defend skydiving.
- She mentioned that Parachutist showed pictures of skydivers "jumping barefoot, jumping without helmets, ... jumping head first". (My gosh, you mean that dangerous head-down flying!)
The front cover has a picture of a butterfly. (Yawn...)
Appendices include:
- The MSPC waiver
- The MAC/FAA report
- The statement from the MSPC staff
An excerpt from the back cover:
" A true story.... The book to read before you or someone you love tries skydiving."
Biased and singleminded.......2006-01-12
It is a real shame that this book was written at all, or indeed had to be written.
Whilst everyone obviously feels for Mrs Melbournes loss the inacuracies and blindness in the fact of the facts make this book a waste of time and sections of it a work of fiction.
three key things.
Facts.
Facts.
Facts.
The only person to blame for this accident is, unfortunatly, her son. No-body else.
Shame but there we go.
If you have ANY interest in Skydiving, really, do yourself a favour and give this a miss.
Should be required reading before jumping --.......2003-10-23
"Aw, Mom, nuthin's gonna happen!"
How many mothers have heard that phrase? How many young persons have the attitude of "It won't/can't happen to me?" Nevertheless, human bodies are frail and subject to breakage, sometimes with only a minimum of force being exerted on them. And mothers continue to suffer because of this inherent frailty. The death of a child-a child at any age-is without question the highest hurdle ever presented to a parent.
One such parent is Jane Melbourne, whose son Jim was always a daredevil-type young man, until at the age of 29, he took up sky-diving. Unfortunately, his very first jump was Jim's last such adventure. His mother, in her grief, while searching for answers, found very few that made sense to her, and so she dug deeper, ever deeper. What she discovered is the basis for this book, which describes the flight and dive that took her son from her, as well as what came after.
Among her first discoveries was the fact that sky-diving was almost totally unregulated by any government agency. Jumpers were required to provide their own health insurance coverage, and to sign a tough, tight waiver that obligated the novice jumper to 100% of the risk, and the experienced trainer to no risk whatever. Jumpers were also required to swear that they were over the age of 18 years, but proof was not always required.
With the help of friends, both hers and her son's, Melbourne set out to change that oversight. To her surprise, she also discovered that there were other bereaved families out there; parents who had also lost a child on the first jump. First jumps are several times more likely to end in fatality than later jumps. But because of the lack of regulations, there was no way for these bereaved parents or siblings to find each other, except by coincidence.
The practice of 'jumping through clouds' is prohibited by common sense, because the jumper cannot see anything, anywhere, but yet that is the feeling that assailed Melbourne and the other families. Details of those fatal flights were not immediately forthcoming, and so closure was an even more difficult process than usual.
All Melbourne wanted was better and more comprehensive instruction for sky-diving students, plus some way to rate the safety of various jumping fields. The military has almost no fatalities for new jumpers, but their training is extremely extensive before ever taking to the air. Hard as it might have been for her and the other bereaved parents, at no time did she--or they--even begin to suggest banning jumping. In their generosity, all they wanted was better education for the jumper before that first jump.
Although Melbourne was successful in gathering legislative support in several states, eventually her campaign faltered and faded, faced as it was by the vast, intensive support and lobbying from the various support magazines (most notably 'Parachutist' and 'Skydiving') and various skydiving organizations.
Ten years later, she readily admits that she obsessed over the details, but she can hardly be blamed for doing so; she merely wanted to know what had happened to her son, and why. Her lament at losing a child readily explains her actions. "I didn't have a spare."
Melbourne is unflinchingly honest, displaying warts and all in her struggle to make this movement safer for everyone involved. One could wish she had been more successful in her quest. This is a book that should be required reading for anyone who even thinks of indulging in such a dangerous challenge. One can hardly call it a sport after reading this very fair, well-researched, heart-felt book.
Jumping Though Clouds -.......2003-10-12
Is one women's ordeal of trying to come to grips with the tragic loss of her son. The book is not a skydiver's story, it is not an adventure, but one women's odyssey through life, death and the political world while she attempts to change the way student skydivers are trained for their first jump. The story is not a technical treatise of the sport or making of a jump. But, is a story of her search for what went wrong the day her son made his first jump.
One must remember that this story is Ms Melbourne's view of skydiving. The book is a warning shot to the skydiving community that if she was someone better connected, more politically savy, these events may have changed the way things are done in the skydiving world. The book is a testament to the United States Parachute Association (USPA) and it's members ability to work with the government and to effectively lobby for change (or no change).
This is a book that should be read by anyone who is or is considering being a skydiving instructor, coach or operating a drop zone. It should be added to the curriculum for any one training to be an instructor or coach as a discussion piece so they may better understand how one event may be perceived. It is a story the illustrates politics and how lobbying can (or cannot) work.
Unfortunately the loss of life for any reason is a tragic one. It is not till the end of the book that we even get a glimpse of what happened that day - and maybe that is the point of Ms Melbourne's story.

interesting subject.......2006-06-10
I thought this book was interesting and it helped to answer some questions. The book could have been longer and it did seem like a fast creation by the author. Also the author did not need to provide information regarding the extent of the injuries that were suffered by its music stars. Common sense will tell you that the injuries of any passenger in a light weight aircraft crash can be horrific. With all of that said, I would still give this book a good rating.
Anyone interested in this topic would certainly find this book interesting.
Music's Broken Wings by Heitman also covers this topic. The Ricky Nelson crash is covered in great detail. That book is larger and does a better job of sparing the reader from the upsetting information.
Both are interesting reading material.
Slightly Enlightening.......2005-10-14
I was disappointed in the lack of content in this book. While I was slightly enlightened with what appear to be some interesting facts, I believe there could have been much more information, resulting in a much thicker book. I finished this in two quick sittings (about a 3.5 hour read). This was a rush job, without a lot of commitment to research. The last few artists barely get a mention. Randy Rhodes, the guitarist that resurrected Ozzy Ozborne's career gets 1.5 pages??
Fantastically Gripping.......2004-12-31
This book takes you into the airplane or helicopter of some of music's most beloved stars on the trips that ended in their death. From Buddy Holly to Aaliyah, you are put in the scene by the very talented author Rich Everitt, and then taken up to the very second of their death. During the story of the last days, there is a flashback through the life of the star ending on the day they die. Another fascinating aspect of this book is how every chapter ends with "Ironies and Oddities". A very interesting list of factoids about the star and any ironic circumstances involving their crash. I loved this book! It truly has something for everyone, the music buff, the amateur or professional pilot, and anyone who just loves to be on the edge of their seat.
Spell binding.......2004-11-03
A friend recommended the book and I was skeptical at first, knowing nothing about flying airplanes. HOWEVER, the stories of the musicians were terrific and the reports of what actually happened in the crash were riveting. My husband and I shared the book back and forth for three days before we finally read it cover to cover between us.
Everitt Rock and Roll Heaven Review.......2004-10-13
I loved getting the real story from a news anchor. The fact that the author was reporting the inaccuracy of first reports made the material especially interesting. I would highly recommend the book to any rock/country fan, especially those who find facts about their favorite performers of interest. I am purchasing for Christmas presents.
