Whew! What a mindfull!.......2005-10-26
Reading this book through was a chore that put me to sleep any number of times. Granted, I fall asleep easily, so this should not reflect on the excellent quality of the information contained. The writing style is somewhat out of date, and the author's tendency to break into preaching or praise tended to be distracting.
Nonetheless, I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to know what God originally intended for constellations and stars to mean. There is a ton of information here, symbology, astronomy, and theology.
Cannot share the same Enthusiasm.......2005-08-17
I bought this book a number of years ago for apologetics purposes-- While I would agree with other reviewers that it holds a high view of Scripture, and the book definitely represents a lot of research, I think that the approach to symbology used here can be problematic. The entire book is a study of constellations, and how they display the Gospel in the Stars. While this is an interesting study I think there a oouple of underlying problems with this approach.
1. Constellations and star names are simply assignments that man has assigned to stars. Usually pagan cultures in association with their pagan mythology. Although this does not completely undermine such a study it does call it into question.
2. A second more serious problem is the same problem which underlies numerology and other allegorical approaches-- they can often be made to say anything the author even while at the same time appearing scholarly.
Those looking for apologetics in the cosmos should consider investigating the "anthropic principle" which tracks evidence of God's design of the universe. One such book would be "Show me God" by Fred Hereen. In terms of our faith, In my opinion, God's Word itself furnishes a lifetime of study without engaging in speculation of symbols which we really can't prove one way or the other.
The Heavens Declare the Glory of God!.......2005-05-10
How thrilling it was to discover Amazon had 'The Witness of the Stars,' available for review. Published posthumously, the work displays the integrity of E.W. Bullinger's efforts to apply several major disciplines of scholarship as he introduces this edifying unveiling of God's Glory proclaimed across the sky. Mr. Bullinger entered the Lord's presence nearly a century ago in 1913!
'The Witness of the Stars,' provides scholastic, historical, and Biblical insight into God's own testimony as to the past, present and future of mankind. What a wind of refreshment in a world seemingly helpless and out of control.
A first mention of the thesis that God has written the Gospel in the Stars was introduced to this reviewer while in Bible School by since graduated Evangelist Lester Roloff. Mr. Roloff had been inspired to examine this field partly because, as a traveling evangelist, he actually flew his own plane from meeting to meeting. He testified to ever being humbled during night flights across the earth. Having been introduced through Scripture's own declarations concerning God's setting the Heavens to declare His Glory, Psalm 19:1, Mr. Roloff went on to pen his findings.
And then how encouraging to read the reviews already given. Only the first handful of entries were able to be perused, yet, they proved the depths discerned on a mere first reading of 'Witness.' This book is a must purchase for any seeking truth.
One reading simply whets the appetite to discover and plumb the depths of Mr. Bullinger's myriad offerings.
Kudos to Amazon for making this book on eternal truth available to the world. Salutations to all in the Lord that have confirmed one's own impressions were in perspective.
To God be the Glory!

The Witness of the Stars.......2002-05-01
I would give the new publisher, Cosimo, one star. It does not have the fold-out of the 48 constellations in the back as does the book published by Kregel, and it has "Astrology" written on the front cover. This is a book on Biblical Astronomy per the author. Bullinger would be turning in his grave if he knew his book was being classified as Astrology. I teach Biblical Astronomy and purchase this book (from Kregel) for my students. I will no longer purchase this book from Amazon.com if this is the only version of it they have.
The following applies to the version published by Kregel Publications: This is one of the best works available on Biblical Astronomy. I have been a student of Biblical Astronomy for over 25 years. This is the book that first got me interested in the field. It is very concise in its Biblical interpretations of the constellations and star names. The book is also very informative as to where the constellation pictures came from. The Witness of the Stars is a masterpiece that brings ancient light to a new generation. I am now a full time Biblical Astronomer and have myself written a book on the subject which concerns recent celestial events. I would not have had a clue of where to begin if it were not for this work by E.W. Bullinger.
Eye-opening.......2000-01-16
As we started our study of space with our kids a friend brought us this book to use. It is so refreshing to read an alternative, Godly view versus what we are force-fed in schools and society. This books helps put God back in knowledge. We are currently ordering our own copy.

Not my favorite Jedi Apprentice book..........2003-08-22
"The Only Witness": Qui-Gon Jinn is still grieving from the death of his loved one, Jedi Knight Tahl. Though still worried about his condition, the Council decides to finally send him on a new mission. Obi-Wan Kenobi is relieved to be on an assignment, but wonders if his master can handle it. They travel to the planet of Frego to find then escort witness Lena Cobral back to Coruscant. Since because her testimony could bring the downfall of an evil crime family on the planet, the Jedi must ensure her safety. The mission was supposed to be an easy one. Unfortunately, the two Jedi must keep their wits about them as they must try to distinguish truth from lies.
"The Only Witness" is book 17 of the 18 Jedi Apprentice books. Sadly, I must say that this book is one of the weakest stories of the whole series. The plot was interesting but never has the climaxes, twists and turns we have come to expect from Jude Watson. The whole first part of the story is not that intriguing though fortunately the ending was very well done. On the plus side to the story, Jude Watson vividly and beautifully writes down Qui-Gon's emotion and grief on paper exceptionally well. Obi-Wan's character is also well-written, his confusion and helplessness in giving support to his Master is expressed to the reader without feeling overdone. On the downside though, I just couldn't really like the character of Lena Cobral very much. She's very much of an uneven character, and I just couldn't keep up with her changes from a strong, noble woman to a weak and emotional one. Ah well, I just guess I've been spoiled from all the previous books. :-) I still do recommend Jedi Apprentice fans to read this book, for first timers, I suggest you read from the very first book then work up through the whole series.
A bit of info on the whole Jedi Apprentice Series. This series explains a lot about how Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan first meet. Their beginning is far from simple and all smooth-sailings, which would be pretty monotonous if it was. Though the books are said for ages 9-12, like many other reviewers I agree that the Jedi Apprentice Series are for anybody. Extremely well-written, the emotions, thoughts, and feelings of the main characters are very well put down into words. I also like the different array of humans and aliens which are portrayed, both good and bad.
Plus check out the new Jedi Quest series, dealing with the master and apprentice duo of Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker. Another Star Wars Series I recommend and like a lot are the Young Jedi Knights series. The stories are about Jacen and Jaina Solo (twins of Han and Leia Solo), and their friends as they journey on the road to becoming Jedi Knights. More on the teenager level of reading. For adult readings, a few selections I enjoy reading are "The Thrawn Trilogy", "Rogue Planet", "The Jedi Academy Trilogy", "The Corellian Trilogy", and "The Truce at Bakura".
Somewhat boring.......2002-03-26
Granted that these books are meant for a young audience. But as we have seen with Harry Potter, you don't have to disintegrate into such simpering text. This particular book ranks as one of the worst books in this series.
Wish that Dave (the one who wrote book number one) could've written the whole series.
Gripping!.......2002-02-28
After Qui-Gon "recovers" from Tahl's death, the Council asks him to escort a witness who plans to testify before the Senate. It turns out that the witness wishes to expose the Cobrals (a leading crime family). She requests escorts because she think someone is out to kill her.
This gripping story is difficult to put down.

Another Great "Jedi Apprentice" to set on the shelf!.......2002-02-25
"The Only Witness" packs it all: deception, trust, betrayal, violence, and emotion (and all within 118 pages too). After returning back to Coruscant and mouring the death of his true love, Jedi Knight Qui-Gon Jinn is anything but ready to go on another misson. But when the Jedi Council summons him and his teenaged apprentice, Obi-Wan Kenobi, for another mission, the heart-broken Jedi won't say no. The Master/Padawan team have been requested to help widow Lena Corbal bring her villanous in-laws to justice, as her past husband intended to do. Lena is in hiding with her cousin, Mica, and intends to go to testify against her in-laws, led by her brother-in-law, in front of the Galatic Senate. But before she leaves, she must gather evidence to support herself, something she did not tell the less-than-pleased Jedi. But the mission is getting more difficult by the minute, especially when Lena asks her mother-in-law, Zanita, for assistance. Qui-Gon is not himself and is convinced that he is not being told the entire truth and Lena's old appartment has been ransacked, her potential evidence misplaced. Thankfully, that mystery was cleared when Mica admitted to Obi-Wan that she misplaced the information so that Lena could not testify. Obi-Wan is in over his head when he realizes that he is falling for Lena. And after a mysterious package arrive for Lena -- from her deceased husband -- and Lena disappears, Obi-Wan feels more compelled than ever to prove to Qui-Gon that Lena's quest is true. But it is more harder to convince him of that after Zanita is kidnapped. Now the Jedi are in over their heads with a kidnapping, a deception, and still no evidence. Is it too much for the Jedi to handle?
The Only Witness.......2002-02-22
The Council has decided that Qui-Gon is finally ready for his next mission after grieving over the loss of Tahl. Even though Qui-Gon is heartbroken, he offers to go along with Obi-Wan in their current mission. They have been assigned to protect a girl who must testify against an evil crime family on her planet, and she is believed to be the only witness with the evidence to prove that her planet is corrupt. Lena lives with the fear that she will constantly be killed by those who will do anything to stop her, but she also lives with a fiery determination that is like Tahl's. Qui-Gon isn't so sure to trust her, but Obi-Wan is reluctant to trust her right away. He's certain that although they must simply escort her to safety, Lena has separate problems as well. It's up to Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan to protect her even more than they had imagined. Jedi Apprentice #17: The Only Witness is a dramatic but short book in the series, and is not as good as the previous books -- but it is still very enjoyable.

Both a legal thriller and a Hollywood novel, Star Witness recounts a sensational murder and trial at the very pinnacle of the movie business. It's also a meditation on the magic--and the deceptive power--of the movies. Mary Margaret Flanders, the most charismatic star in Hollywood, is found nude with her throat cut, floating in the swimming pool of her palatial mansion. The chief suspect is her husband, the brilliant director Stanley Roth. Enter Joseph Antonelli, one of the nation's top criminal-defense lawyers (and the star of four previous D.W. Buffa tales), who is soon grappling with vicious Hollywood politics, a huge media circus, and a client so complex and unpredictable that even his own lawyer doubts his innocence.
Buffa's courtroom scenes are full of authentic details that reflect his years as a defense lawyer, though they crackle a little less than in his other books. And some readers will surely bog down in his distinctive prose style, with its curious, archaic formality ("She was about to tell me something more about the difficulties with which Stanley Roth had to deal"). Nonetheless, this ambitious book offers many pleasures as it plays with our obsessions with celebrities and the movies. Its solution will keep you guessing right up to the last page, and perhaps even beyond. --Nicholas H. Allison

Minor-League Star.......2005-08-31
Joseph Antonelli is back in a case where a Hollywood Starlet is murdered in her home. Her husband, a well-known producer is accused. We go through the mechanics of finding out who the players are in the story: The producer/director's partners, the Hollywood Homicide detective who has a connection with the couple, the dead star's ex-husband and father, etc. The trial has some interesting moments, but the ending was, in my opinion, anti-climactic.

"Star Witness", Dudley W. Buffa, NY, GP Putnam's Sons, 2003 ISBN 0-399-153034-X, HC, 388 pg., 9 1/4" x 6 1/4". This 5th of 7 Joseph Antonelli novels finds the protagonist criminal defense attorney musing over the death of Hollywood star Mary Margaret Flanders, a.k.a. Marian Walsh, whose nude body was found in the pool of her Beverly Hills mansion. The funeral was shown on TV & that night Antonelli is awakened by the star's husband, Stanley Roth, who solicits him to become his defense sttorney. He leaves his live-in love Marissa (Kane) in Sausalito & is flown to Los Angeles where he meets the notables: -- husband Stanley, head of Blue Zephyr Pictures; Michael Wirthlin & Louis Griffin, associates; Walker Bradley, actor & Julie Evans, executive assistant to Roth.
We learn Mary Margaret died violently, a throat slashing, and that husband Stanley, the only known person in the home was prone to violent temper. We are introduced to the courtroom Judge Hon. Rudolph G. Honigman & the aggressive Prosecutrix Annabelle Van Roten. Other principals include Jack Walsh, dead star's father, & Detective Crenshaw. Just when you think the plot is over, it abruptly changes direction & we find unsuspected surprizes that nicely tie up the loose ends gratifyingly. This, of the 6 Antonelli novels I've read to date, is the finest & most satisfying. The book deals with revenge, power, position & character in a brilliant manner.
As bad as they come..........2004-07-20
This is unquestionably the worst legal thriller I have yet to encounter. "Star Witness" is painfully boring, with a completely unrealistic storyline that ends with a terribly anti-climactic revelation of the killer's identity. This novel lacks suspense, drama, and every other characteristic necessary for a compelling read. It is nothing more than a windy, self-indulgent waste of paper that will leave even the most ardent of legal thriller fans struggling to finish. There is not a single character that you will care about or cheer for, and the Stanley Roth character is one of the most outrageously unbelievable cast members of any novel in recent memory. Save your time and money, and stay away from this listless attempt at suspenseful fiction.
A Classic In The Lawyer/Thriller Genre.......2004-05-08
This is one of the best novels of the law/courtroom/murder mystery thrillers I've read - and I read them all. The characters are so finely drawn, the writing itself so good, and the plot so engrossing that it just sweeps you along. A book that is very difficult to put down; you just have-to keep reading. Author Buffa is one of the very best at what he does.

Remember the "Twinkie Defense," where a lawyer tried to get his client off on a murder charge on the basis of too much sugar in his diet? Fictional (but totally believable) San Francisco attorney Willa Jansson goes one step beyond in this addition to Lia Matera's lively series: Willa uses the "UFO Defense," based on her client's memories (revealed under hypnosis) of being in an alien spaceship when his sports car went off the road and killed another driver. Jansson finds four squabbling UFO experts to support this defense strategy, and not the least of Matera's many high points in a book full of them is her ability to convince us that it might just have happened. Previous Jansson cases in paperback include Last Chants, Hidden Agenda, Prior Convictions, and Radical Departure.
Book Description
Just when attorney Willa Jansson is about to take a little time off from her job at a Son Francisco multimedia firm, a friend calls in a special favor. So, on her first day of what should have been her well-earned vacation, Willa's off to Santa Cruz to solve what she hopes will be a simple case of vehicular manslaughter and felony hit-and-run. But Willa is about to discover that nothing about this case -- or the town where it occurred -- is quite as it seems.
Alan Miller's sports car went over an embankment and onto the coastal highway below, landing atop another car and killing its driver. But there are no tire tracks, no witnesses, and Miller's injuries aren't consistent with a car crash. Unable to recall where he was just after the accident, Miller's memory is jogged under hypnosis -- a recollection so far-fetched that Willa knows it will never stand up in court. All of a sudden, seemingly idyllic Santa Cruz is rife with dangerous secrets, and Willa must outrun helicopters, snipers, reporters, her own interfering mother -- and try to maintain her credibility and her career by making the jury buy her client's out-of-this-world alibi. If she can just keep the witnesses alive long enough to testify....

Good, simple story about a law case.......2004-10-16
I'm reviewing this as a book on tape - more on that below.
Part of my positive reaction to this book, I am sure is a negative reaction I've recently had to several books on tape that I've listened to lately. Some have tried too hard to be overly-complicated. Some have injected way too much romance, so much that you forget it was supposed to be a legal thriller with a bit of romance, not a romance with a bit of legal thriller. However, this story is a no-frills, just-the-facts-ma'am legal story - thank goodness!
Now, this is not to say that it is not entertaining and the facts are not truly bizarre.
Matera's book is set in California and involves a man who is arrested for vehicular manslaughter, but he claims he can't have done it since he was being probed by aliens in their spaceship at the time. Matera neither ridicules nor endorses the concept of alien abduction, much to her credit.
The audiobook version was performed by Alexa Bauer and she did an absolutely wonderful job. Kudos all around!

grown-up hippie, willa jansson, a truly unique practioner of law, launches an outer limits defense of a mycologist accused of vehicular manslaughter. defense experts provide a veritable symposium on unexplained phenomena. engagingly wacky tone and wide ranging speculation complete with a bibliography.
Delightful mystery with a new element -- an alleged UFO abdu.......1998-03-20
Lia Matera's mysteries are usually fun, but I particularly enjoyed this one. My work is in the paranormal community (a magazine dealing with UFOs, psychic phenomena, ghosts, etc.), and Matera has quite accurately captured the atmosphere of ufology today -- the eccentric and level-headed participants, the internecine rivalries. I was amazed by her perceptiveness and really quite even-handed treatment of this subplot in her novel. Don't be misled by these comments, however; this is not a UFO book; it is first and foremost a mystery. Matera's protagonist, Willa Janssen, is caught up in the complexities of defending a client with an impossible alibi; she doesn't know whether to believe him or not; yet she must make a convincing case to the jury. Is is possible that her client WAS abducted by aliens? Is he delusional? or Was he driving the car that caused the deaths of another car's occupants?
A terrific read,a glimpse into otherworldly possibilities.......1997-05-08
California multi-media lawyer Willa Jansson has spent most of her adultlife trying to be the ultimate yuppie, reacting to being raised in acounter-culture lifestyle by two hippie parents. Willa strives to blend in with the rest of society, but seems to find herself swimming upstream. Her latest case is accepted under duress because she owed a favor to a psychiatrist friend. She defends a person charged with felonious hit and run, and vehicular homicide. The defendant, under hypnosis, states he was not in the car at the time of the accident. ...... Suppressed memories maintain that the accused was the victim of a UFO abduction and his subsequent injuries support his claims as to what the aliens did to him. There is no physical evidence supporting the claims of the DA. Still a lot rests with the jury (at least one member) being open minded to the claim that the defendant was abducted. Reluctantly, even though she is wary of the pending media circus, Willa rejects a plea bargain and a more acceptable line of defense. She decides to try to convince a small town jury that there are many unknown and unexplained happenings in the universe and this is one of them. As Willa persists with her investigation, it becomes clear that someone is willing to go to great lengths to insure that some truths never see the light of day. ..... Lia Matera constructs her usual brilliant who-done-it while subtly weaving a lot of known UFO lore into the story line. The impressive bibliography adds credence to the research and theories behind this tale. The female protagonist is a woman to be admired as she is an independent female fighting to do what she believes is the right thing, even if it means placing herself at risk and being the recipient of ridicule and scorn. Ms. Matera is one of the leaders in a genre teeming with much talent. ....Harriet Klausner

"Why should there be another book on witnessing...when there are so many? I kept debating the pros and cons and insistently 'con' began gaining the initiative. Did I have the effrontery to debate the dilemma with the Lord? I am afraid I did! But not for long. Soon He was giving me a gentle 'nudge'...to give a fresh breath of encouragement to the timid...the fearful...the indifferent. All of which I had been at times. And the weapon I was to wield was a brief slip of paper which I learned, often falteringly, was to pack the power of spiritual dynamite - a mere wisp of thing we call a tract..."

High-spirited horse trainer Jessica Stanson stumbles into the perfect job on one of the most elite ranches in Montana. Michael Carven is a man who has left a difficult past behind him, and now works at his dream job raising horses under the Montana sky. Against his will, Michael finds himself both drawn into the case and coming to care for his independent new trainer. And if having a killer on the loose wasn't enough, his two worlds collide when Jessica becomes the only material witness in the case. More of a 4 and a 1/2 stars only because of the ending.......2006-11-04
Detective Michael Carvin hasn't worked a case since the brutal slaying of his wife three years earlier. A serial killer is on the loose, and only Michael can catch him. That is if the arrival of his new horse trainer, Jessica Stanson doesn't get in his way and his heart. He has guarded his feelings for too long. Jess is everything he could ever want in a woman and the best part is she helps him get through the pain he has been living with all these years. Unfortunately, the killer knows what Jessica means to Michael. Can Michael find the killer before it is too late for Jessica? Or will he lose her forever?
Fatal Embrace is the classic example of a Romantic Suspense. It is a quick read at only 279 pages that seem to turn themselves. From the very beginning the reader is drawn into the suspense. The characters are likable and easy to connect with. The only disappointing part of the entire book is the ending. With as short as this book is, the author could have taken a few more pages to really wrap the story up. It's not that the reader is left hanging, but more like the last chapter is missing and then it jumps into the epilogue without a solid conclusion.
Is it worth buying?
I enjoyed the book very much. However, the $11.86 price on this short novel seems extremely high, and that is the marked down sales price. It is definitely worth reading though, if you enjoy a good romantic suspense novel.
I like this author!.......2006-07-18
Now, don't quote me on this, but the reason I first heard about this, was an Oprah recommendation...I could be wrong, since it's been over a year that I purchased it. It's been by my nightstand that whole time, with me too busy to start it. Then, 2 nights ago, I could not sleep and thought I would read for a while. I read until almost 5 in the morning, but couldn't finish it before I had to get up for work. I am looking forward to finishing it tonight. I think I know who the killer is. I think this is a great first book for this author. I really like the characters...and the suspense. I picture Michael as looking and sounding like Sam Elliot. Now, if I'm disappointed with the ending...I'll update my review, but I certainly would recommend this.
Made me keep reading.......2005-11-16
I'm am not an avid reader. However, I picked this book up while doing some observation hours at our local library and finished it in two days. I thought it was a fun read. Romantic, mysterious, and believable.
Not that great.......2005-09-01
For a mystery, this book wasn't that great. It focused more on the romance, which in my opinion was lacking, than the mystery. There was no suspence. Not very much chemistry between the characters. And in the end the killer made no sence. I don't think I'll be buying another on of her books.
Terror in Montana........2005-04-19
Michael "Mike" Carven owns and operates a ranch in Montana. Until three years ago he had been the best detective around. But when his fiancée had been murdered, he had been unable to deal with it. Mike's partner, Dan Walker, had been handed the position of Chief and Mike concentrated on his ranch.
After a few recent serial killings in the area, Dan goes to Mike for help. Mike has the ability to get inside the mind of a killer. It was what had made him such a good detective. Mike agrees to help. In exchange, Dan locates and hires Mike a new foreman to help train horses, teach children's classes, and organize the ranch hands. Dan found Jess Stanson, whose reputation showed him to be the best around.
"Jess" turns out to be short for Jessica. No one expected a woman to show up. Mike is determined to fire her, but Jess turns out to be just as stubborn as he. Mike soon admits that Jess really IS the best. Things around the ranch improve. Even the hands respect her and treat her as one of their own. (Pranks and all.) As Jess settles in, Mike softens toward her and he begins to open up.
When the next body is found, the young victim's photo is shown on television. Jess recalls seeing the lady with a man on the day she disappeared. Jess is able to give a very good description of the killer. Problem is that the killer had noticed Jess seeing him with the victim. Now the killer has Jess marked as his next prey.
***** This story could take you to the edge of insanity with suspense. Therefore, the author adds humor and romance to help ease your blood pressure. No boredom in this novel. Expect to stay up late in order to read "just one more chapter". *****

In Donhaven, children's book illustrator and painter, Jenny Tyler notices her neighbor's overflow of mail. Though not much more than acquaintances, she goes to check on Dolan, but notices his cat Choc acting weird. Jenny rings the bell, but receives no response. She notices the door is unlocked, enters and finds Dolan dead.
Police Chief Pierce comforts her when troubleshooter Gabe Daniels arrives on the scene. Gabe works for the DEA and corporate CEO Sterling Thomas. He bullies Jenny, but she mostly ignores him. When Dolan turns out to be embezzler DeWitt and his house is blown up, Gabe worries that Jenny is in peril especially when assailants break into her home. As they become better acquainted Jenny and Gabe fall in love, but she has a history with the mob and he trusts no one not even his grandfather.
This is an intriguing police procedural romance that ironically showcases in a twisted way that FAMILY MATTERS. Gabe and Jenny are solid protagonists while Pierce and to lesser degree Thomas are the elderly statesmen. Fans will find DeWitt quite fascinating as he stole millions, hardly spent any of it, and still needed the thrill of playing in another illegal activity. The falling in love subplot takes a back seat to a bewittiching strong suspense story.
