2 out of 5 stars Abnormal Psychology (13th Edition) (MyPsychlab Series).......2007-09-03

The book looked as if it had been wet at some point. I did not get the Psych Lab. I could have paid the same price for a new book at the college bookstore. The only reason I did not send back is I needed the book for class.
Also I tried to order another book and the credit card had not been activated. I tried for several days to re-order but was unable to.
Very disappointed with the service. The book was advisted as New but looked used.

5 out of 5 stars Short and Sweet..........2007-09-15

I work as a hospitalist in a busy community hospital. I use a commercial software product as a quick reference for other meds, but still stick with this classic reference for antibiotics and sensitivities. Small and lightweight, it doesn't take up much room in your pocket. Med students and residents in particular shouldn't leave home without it!

5 out of 5 stars The Sandford CD did not work.......2007-08-23

I have been using the Sandford Guide for years. This time I decided to order the CD to download on my PDA. Vane illusion. I couldn't. I tried the technical support. After about one hour on the phone, they could not either. So I asked the technician to please transfer me to a customer service's representative to order the book and return the CD but he coulnd't because the technical support is given by an independent company! End result: I cannot return the CD to Amazon, the Sandford Guide people are unreachable. I felt cheated by this clever system. I accepted that I lost my money and had no choice but buy another book.

5 out of 5 stars Antimicrobial Therapy.......2007-08-05

Have relied on this annual review for over 25 years. Nothing else comes close to being as reliable, current, thorough and useful.

5 out of 5 stars Very good book.......2007-07-30

I bought this book upon starting my residency and i have to say that i found it to be very useful. It covers all the infectious diseases, even those we might never see in our practice. the best part tough is that it includes empiric treatment guidelines, 2nd 3rd or even 4th line antimicrobial agents for every infection. This way it can solve the problem with patients being allergic to specific antibiotics, that many times are the mainstay in treating infectious diseases. I think this book can't serve its purpose any better than it does

    Book Description

A feat of historical detection--the most significant, andcertainly the most enthralling, book on American prehistory to appear indecades. The greatest "unsolved mystery" of the American Southwest relates to theAnasazi, the native peoples who by the 11th century converged on ChacoCanyon (now New Mexico) and built a flourishing cultural center thatattracted pilgrims from far and wide, a vital crossroads of the prehistoricworld. The Anasazis' accomplishments--in agriculture, in art, in commerce,in architecture and engineering--were astounding, rivaling those of theMayans in distant Central America. By the 13th century, however, the Anasazi were gone from Chaco. Vanished. What was it--drought? pestilence? war? forced migration? mass murder orsuicide? Craig Childs draws on scholarly research and a lifetime ofadventure and exploration in the American Southwest to pursue the mysteryof their disappearance. Considering many possibilities, he points the wayto a new understanding of how a vibrant civilization collapsed.

5 out of 5 stars Childs has done it with this book..........2007-09-11

It's been a long time since I was thoroughly captivated by a book but House Of Rain has managed to do just that. Craig Childs is arguably one of the finest non-fiction writers today. For those of us who live and breathe the Great Southwest, Child's descriptions will bring back vivid memories of Sleeping Ute mountain in the distance and standing where the Ancients stood at Mesa Verde, Hovenweep, and Chaco. For those reviewers who felt like they needed maps and an answer, you can get maps at the visitor centers all bound up in glossy little books with equally glossy descriptions of people and places. This is not one of those books - it's so much deeper. This book is not a souvenier, it's a vehicle that takes you to places that a relative few will ever see and even less will understand. Sometimes, there is no final answer - there's just the lingering questions. That's part of what makes it so interesting.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Read With Interesting Personal Point of Views.......2007-09-06

This is the first book by Craig Childs that I've read. I will say it is an excellent book on the Anasazi. Craig has spent his whole life in the desert Southwest and appears to be quite knowledgeable about his subject. If you are the least bit interested in knowing a bit more about the Anasazi but don't want to read a "dry" scientific book about the subject, this is "the book" for you. Craig has travelled, worked and talked with many southwest Archaeologists who study the Anasazi. His discussions on the Anasazi are not boring and dry and his writing style is superb. I have a passing interest in the subject matter and this is one of the newest books on the subject and based on reviews of his other books, bought this one. I'm glad I did. Craig covers some controversial areas in regards to the Anasazi and where they went. They didn't disappear, their ancestors are still here, spread out over the southwest. He hits on a few quite creditabal possibilities and presents material to support them. I not being an expert on the subject but none the less interested and with some of my own ideas, I think Craig is on to something in regards to some of the reasons for the abandonment of the ancient sites across the entire southwest not just the Four Corners area commonly attributed to the Anasazi. Craig's descriptions of his backcountry travels are excellent and gives the sense that you are there with him which makes it even more enjoyable to read. This one is a keeper which I know I will read over and over again.

5 out of 5 stars House of Rain, A Great Read.......2007-08-16

If you'd like to take a journey into the SW United States looking for the "missing" Anasazi, you should crack open this book, and delve into Craig Child's riveting journey. Child's style of writing puts you there with him, and he's very skilled at creating images that draw you into the adventure.

5 out of 5 stars House of Rain .......2007-07-07

Craig Childs and "House of Rain" took me to places I've been and most importantly, to places I've been unable to experience. As I was reading this descriptive narrative of the Southwest that I love so much, I felt I was walking right beside him...excellent!

5 out of 5 stars Exception read for the non-archeologist interested in the Anasazi.......2007-07-06

I already own several of Craig Childs books which I enjoy reading so that I can vicariously explore the canyons with him. This book is Exceptional. I bought it just last week at the Anasazi Heritage Center near Mesa Verde and Canyons of the Ancients while vacationing there with my wife and granddaughter. Living in Utah, we make yearly trips to the Moab area and southeastern canyons of Utah always hopeing to find a ruin to explore and photograph. This book is great for the non-scientist but those interested in the cultures of the Southwest like me!

3 out of 5 stars for the traveler.......2007-10-09

The coarse was very clear and well organized etc. The problem I had with it is it concentrated on words I never use. example- consolate, pastry shop, railroad station. I wanted to learn how to talk to someone in Spanish. Everywhere I have traveled in Mexico all the airports etc all speak English so I don't need all the travel words, I wanted to have a conversation. Most of this coarse is dedicated to travel.

    4 out of 5 stars Geared for a traveler...........2007-09-24

The value of what you are getting for the price with this set is incredible. There are 11 total discs including the introduction, 8 lessons discs and 2 bonus discs. It includes 3 books (1 for each level) and a case to carry it all in.

The format is good, with English words and phrases followed by a pause then 2 Spanish repetitions each followed by a pause. This gives you a chance to test yourself after the English when you think you've learned and the chance to practice either learning or pronunciation after each of the Spanish.

The books are great, because if you learn like me, they have exactly the same lessons in written format so you can follow along or confirm what you have heard in writing. This has cleared up some pronunciation issues for me.

My only regret with this set, is that the order of the lessons seems to be geared for someone who needs to learn words and phrases a traveler would need first. There are some basics first and then immediately, on the first disc, the lessons go into transportation, hotel, currency, and many other travel related words and phrases. Because you are also being taught some basics and conjugation of verbs at the same time, you really can't skip these sections and come back to them later, or you will miss some of the basics that will be built upon later. So...long story short, as someone who will not be travelling who wants to learn Spanish to help at work and getting along in society, it has frustrated me that I cannot use a lot of what I am learning so far. I can ask where the bus, train, train station, airport and taxi are. I can ask for a one way ticket, how to get a taxi from the airport, and how to get the train from Madrid to Paris, but I can't yet ask for 2 pounds of chicken at the local Mexican grocery store that I frequent.

So...you'll need to be patient. I do like that they alternate a man and woman doing the English and Spanish and then vice versa on the next lesson. This exposes you to different pronunciations and voices and keeps the boredom at bay.

I do recommend this set as a starter, but I will also be buying another to see if I can find something better.

    5 out of 5 stars Muy Bueno!.......2007-09-12

I love these CDs and highly recommend them. They are so helpful with conversational Espanol. I've learned so much!

    5 out of 5 stars Great set..........2007-08-12

A must have for the busy person who needs to learn another language in a short period of time...

4 out of 5 stars Good Value for cost.......2007-08-09

I've taken 2 yrs of high school Spanish so this was a great refresher.
It has been about 15yrs since I was in high school. If someone is trying to learn by JUST a cd set; it is pretty unrealistic. You should also be using books as a supplemental since most people learn by hearing and seeing. I am happy with this cd set though because it is very much like listening to a teacher in class and for very little cost.

The groundbreaking follow-up to the international bestsellera hands-on guide to putting McKinsey techniques to work in your organization

McKinsey & Company is the most respected and most secretive consulting firm in the world, and business readers just can't seem to get enough of all things McKinsey. Now, hot on the heels of his acclaimed international bestseller The McKinsey Way, Ethan Rasiel brings readers a powerful new guide to putting McKinsey concepts and skills into actionThe McKinsey Mind. While the first book used case studies and anecdotes from former and current McKinseyites to describe how "the firm" solves the thorniest business problems of their A-list clients, The McKinsey Mind goes a giant step further. It explains, step-by-step, how to use McKinsey tools, techniques and strategies to solve an array of core business problems and to make any business venture more successful.

Designed to work as a stand-alone guide or together with The McKinsey Way, The McKinsey Mind follows the same critically acclaimed style and format as its predecessor. In this book authors Rasiel and Friga expand upon the lessons found in The McKinsey Way with real-world examples, parables, and easy-to-do exercises designed to get readers up and running.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars This Book is a Life Changer.......2007-04-20

I didn't read McKinsey Way and you don't have to either to see the impact that McKinsey Mind hypothesis based decision making will have in your life. It uses the same principle that many authors like Polya, Bransford and Stein and many others use. If you work backwards you will get far better results, faster. Why? Simple: Just remember how easy is to solve the labyrinth puzzles starting from the end. Then compare that with the time lost when you try to figure out your way to the end starting from the beginning. This is a simplified analogy of the power and potential this technique has!!!!

I disagree with some reviews that it's a difficult book to read, just read the numerous and very illustrative examples the authors give you and you will find that while it's a different way of thinking IT WORKS! and that's all that matters. This book really changed the way I solve problems

3 out of 5 stars Useful book for consulting.......2007-03-31

This book is based on Mckinseys consultancy practise. Step by step some best practices are shown used in this company. Very useful, when you're i.e. considering a job in this field. On the other hand the Mckinsey brand is a little over exaggarated with all the Mckinsey slang and heroic attitude towards this company. But when you read through this, it stays a valuable book.

1 out of 5 stars This is a terrible book..........2007-03-17

This book is unbelieveably bad. Here's the entire book: Decide what your looking at, develop a hypothesis, test it with data, do some communications around your work. Literally. I expected some real, in depth analysis techniques, and this is total baloney. I am an engineer by trade, well versed in six sigma tools and am close to an MBA; in all of that I've never ever seen something so fluffy and useless as this. The authors and "McKinsey-ites" who contributed should be ashamed.

    Gosh, I sound a little bitter ;)

5 out of 5 stars Excellent yet not comprehensive peek inside McKinsey.......2007-02-14

Mr. Rasiel provides a peek inside the methods used by one of the worlds most elite consulting firms. While he does not disclose any secrets he does offer insights into a methodology used for solving problems quickly. The most helpful insight revealed is the MECE principle. This MECE (mee-see) principle requires the mutually exclusive collectively exhaustive breakdown of issues before conducting higher-level analysis. However, Mr. Rasiel never provides detail into the mechanics of effecting 'MECE Analysis'.

While other techniques in the book will help MBA graduates with consulting engagements, the disclosure of the MECE principle as the cornerstone of McKinsey's analytical modus operandi will be this book's legacy.

    3 out of 5 stars Please update.......2007-01-09

I suggest you to read this book. You won't find innovative or fresh ideas but you can learn about a methodology used by a great company that could be interesting. More examples and figures should help better the reader.

I wait a new and updated book with fresh methods and way of working. It's not a good thing to read about Jeff Skilling in the Introduction...

At the end a good work. Read it because it is must for your "business library"

Although word of mouth said that My Big Fat Supernatural Wedding was an uninspiring collection as a big fan of Jim Butcher, Charlaine Harris and Sherrilyn Kenyon I wanted to find out for myself.

Where it works - the stories that are set in an ongoing series. Jim Butcher's Something Borrowed is a solid entry into the Harry Dresden series. Although I'm not familiar with Lori Handeland's Night Creatures universe her story (Charmed by the Moon) still managed to draw me in, keep me interested and made me want to check out her backlist.

Sherrilyn Kenyon's story whilst not reaching the emotional intensity of Phantom Lover from the Midnight Pleasures anthology is a vast improvement on Until Death Do We Part (Velkan and Retta's story from the Love at First Bite antho.)Though I wish she would cut down on the point of view head hopping.

One other story that stood out for me was Esther Friesner's The Wedding of Wylda Serene. Whilst slow to get into it had some very witty lines that had me laughing out loud.

Having read the stories I am disappointed. Overall the anthology is okay, but there is not enough here that stands out. Maybe it's a case of trying to cram too many authors in to one book.

Anthologies I would recommend - for Sherrilyn Kenyon - Midnight Pleasures, Stroke of Midnight. For Charlaine Harris - Bite (as part of the ongoing Sookie series), Night's Edge (standalone story).

5 out of 5 stars One of the best anthologies I've read.......2007-06-08

Usually anthologies are like panning for gold. You've got to sift through a lot of dirt to get the gold nuggets. This anthology, however, was the motherlode. All the stories were entertaining. Out of the nine, the last two were the weakest, but still a good short read.

I was pleasantly surprised by Charlaine Harris's contribution. I expected a Sookie story, but instead received a good vampire/werewolf story with no Sookie in sight. It is alwasy nice to see another part of the world which an author has created.

Jim Butcher was in true form with his entry. Gee I just love Harry Dresden, no matter what he is doing.

All in all I recommend this book for a short quick read. I already have a waiting list of people who want to borrow it from me.

    4 out of 5 stars teaser!.......2007-05-31

what a teaser! Just when u are getting into one of the story, its over! but i guess that is what u can expect from and anthology.

5 out of 5 stars Wow! great collection.......2007-04-23

This collection was just stunning! Great combo, some of the stories are amazingly funny and a few are very spooky. Wonderful read, but a few at a time, there is definitely some overlap of ideas. P.S. LOOOved the Esther Freisner story. But I'm biased.

    Book Description

Human Resources are the most important resource that a firm commands and should be regarded as capital, a factor of production in which managers invest today in order to realize future profits. This book deals with the strategic implications of Human Resource Management as an important strategic asset and emphasizes its importance within the overall strategy of the firm. The book covers issues such as job design, evaluation, recruitment, training, career concern, and outsourcing and downsizing. The linkage between the various pieces of HRM policy are stressed and how the policies are related to management issues such as TQM, just-in-time manufacturing, and others. The book is aimed at the general manager, not the HRM practitioner and it stresses conceptual frameworks, not procedural methodology.

5 out of 5 stars The best book on strategic human resources I have ever read!.......1999-09-20

Baron & Kreps write with wit & grace, pulling together a vast amount of literature to make their point that human resource management is critical to a firm's success. In every chapter, they get to the point quickly, writing for students in a way that faculty will appreciate. They retain the essence of the academic research on which their principles are based, while focusing on what it all means for managers. I highly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars A major achievement in an underserved field.......1999-06-13

Essential reading for both general managers and human resource executives, this book breaks new ground in several ways.

First, the authors present human resources as a critical part of a SYSTEM, integrated with the company's external environment, workforce, culture, strategy and production methods, rather than as an isolated or downstream activity.

Second, they bring insights from economics, sociology and social psychology to the topic, in a powerful way. The four appendices alone (transaction cost economics, game theory, agency theory and market signaling) are worth the price of the book.

Third, they avoid the trap of "best practice", where an author looks at a few successful firms (GE? PepsiCo? 3M?) and encourages others to imitate them. In contrast, this book offers clues to creating real and inimitable competitive advantage from a company's human resource management.

The entire treatment is readable and rich in cases.

    5 out of 5 stars No-bull human resources.......1999-03-23

I had the fortune to have access to early versions of some chapters of this book, and it changed my opinion about human resources. They present the issues surrounding human resources management using frameworks that come from economics and organizational science, not from opinions and feelings...

      Book Description

Short Straw reintroduces Santa Fe lawyer Ed Eagle, who first appeared in Stuart Woods's 1992 thriller, Santa Fe Rules. In his first adventure, Ed fell in love with the seductive Barbara Kennerly, and married her-against his better judgment.

Turns out that Ed should have listened to his intuition. Ed Eagle awakens the morning after his fortieth birthday to find that Barbara has vanished, and Ed's money-from his business, his bank, and his brokerage accounts-has been wired to the Cayman Islands. Barbara, it appears, had drugged his birthday wine, neatly cleaned him out and then fled to Mexico, from where she can't be extradited. And as if that weren't bad enough, when Ed arrives at work that morning he discovers that he's been assigned a new client who looks like nothing but trouble-Joe Big Bear, a part-time mechanic charged with a triple homicide. Ed hires two slightly shady investigators to search for his wife. But when they track Barbara down in Puerto Vallarta, they discover that Joe Big Bear may also be embroiled in Barbara's plot. Ed soon finds himself caught in a scheme that is much more far reaching-and deadly-than anyone would have expected.

      Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars A good story although bland for thriller fans.......2007-07-25

This review is for the Signet paperback, May 2007, 375 pages. SHORT STRAW was on the USA Today's Top 150 Best-Selling books list for eight weeks reaching the peak position of 43. Stuart Woods has 26 novels on this best-seller list.

Ed Eagle, a successful lawyer, wakes up uncharacteristically late with a hangover on the very day he is hosting an inauguration party for his new offices. By the time he sorts things out, he realizes his wife, Barbara, had drugged him to assure he slept late so she could escape to Mexico with over a million dollars of his money. Ed acts fast. With just minutes to spare, he prevents Barbara from cleaning out his brokerage accounts too.

Ed sends a private detective to Mexico to find his wife, which he does quickly, but Barbara shoots him. So Ed sends another PI to rescue the first and find his wife. The plot continues with the two private detectives chasing Barbara around Mexico. Meanwhile, Ed discovers Barbara has a contract out on him so she can get all his assets and collect on his life insurance.

Although SHORT STRAW is listed as an action thriller, it is not the over-the-top, nail-biting, super-hero type. The plot is believable, the characters plausible and everyone makes mistakes. Although many scenes happen in Mexico, the settings are either imaginary or unremarkable. It's a good story, but bland for thriller fans.

      1 out of 5 stars Very Unsatisfying.......2007-07-14

I've read 8 or 9 books now by Stuart Woods. This one ranks at the very bottom. Woods is real hit and miss. "Chiefs" was great. "Under the Lake" was unusual. "Prince of Beverly Hills" was nostalgic. This one was really just a waste of time.

The first book in this particular series was called Santa Fe Rules and introduced us to protagonist Ed Eagle, a Santa Fe attorney. It was a reasonably fun read, even though completely implausible.

This one picks up about two years after the conclusion of "Santa Fe Rules" with Eagle awakening on the day he is to celebrate the grand opening of his new offices. Within the hour he learns that his bank accounts have been cleaned out and his wife has fled the country. But yet, he manages to put on his game face and carry on as though life is grand. It is just the first in a long string of impossibilities in terms of how humans actually behave outside the pages of fiction. The only glimpse Woods ever seems to give us into the inner turmoil of his characters in any of his books is that they throw up. Literally - woof their cookies. Doesn't matter whether they have been shot at, robbed, seen a ghost, whatever. They throw up and continue on their merry way as though they just had a touch of food poisoning and now have it out of their system.

The book has no twists at all. There's really no mystery here either. Wife runs off with money. Husband gives chase through a series of private investigators. Husband catches wife. The end.

It is exactly what it seems. For no apparent reason, Barbara -- Eagle's wife of two years who we first meet in the pages of Santa Fe Rules -- has just up and left him and Woods proceeds to take the next 300 pages making her out to be a world-class b**ch. It really is quite senseless. We're never given any motive. There isn't another lover. There isn't a secret life. There isn't unhappiness at home. And it isn't really for want of money as Barbara lives a life of luxury under Eagle's roof with a man who treats her well and is faithful.

As I said, there are no plot twists. It just plods along with Barbara always half a step in front of Eagle, but with him finally catching up to her at the end. And instead of delivering a "she reaped what she sowed" ending that would have been a little bit satisfying to make up for absence of plot and motive, we get something that feels like one of those insufferable TV cop shows where the scummiest criminals never meet the violent end they really deserve, but instead a taxpayer-funded waltz through the American justice system where you know a parole awaits them all-too-prematurely. And the cops who moralize that if they rough the guy up or dispense their own brand of Clint Eastwood style justice, they've "sunk to the level of the criminal."

"Prince of Beverly Hills" was far more satisfying in this respect.

Maybe Woods was trying to leave the door open for a sequel with this book's ending. But my advice? Don't bother, Mr. Woods. You've milked the antagonist in this story for all she is worth, which wasn't enough for even a single book - let alone two. This book was truly pulp fiction. It wasted a perfectly good tree. I perservered to the end, only to find it wasn't worth waiting for.

3 out of 5 stars A woman takes off with the money.......2007-06-15

This is entertaining light reading with a somewhat unlikely, but interesting, cast of characters. Ed Eagle, attorney in Sante Fe, wakes up one morning and finds his wife gone along with all the money in their personal bank account and the business bank account (things like that do happen in real life). Ed seems mainly interested in getting the money back and getting a divorce. His love for the woman is lost very quickly, and he just as quickly finds a new woman. It's hard to have much sympathy for any of the characters in the novel, but the plot moves along as you read on to see what happens next.

      3 out of 5 stars Wayward Wife.......2007-06-11

Stuart Woods, "Short Straws" resurrects Ed Eagle from "Santa Fe Rules," whose wife does not want a divorce, but a permanent separation with winner take all. Ed must hired an Apache tracker, Vittorio and Cupie Dalton, a retired LAPD detective to trace both his wife, Barbara and his money to Mexico. Getting a divorce when the "lady" is out to kill him is rough, but not so much that Ed doesn't find solace in the arms of Susannah Wilde, an actress from Delano, GA.
This vintage Woods has more twists and turns than a mountain road with enough betrayals, bullets, and beddings to keep the plot moving.
