Book Description
Revised for 2007! This softcover edition examines the turbulent relationship between legendary Doors frontman Jim Morrison and his common-law wife, Pamela Courson, tracing the lives of Courson and Morrison before their fateful meeting in 1965, their lives together until Morrison's death in 1971, and Coursin's life without Morrison, including her fight to gain the rights to his estate until her death from a heroin overdose on April 25, 1974.
Customer Reviews:
Best Morrison book so far.......2007-08-06
It was heart-wrenching to read into the lives of these two beautiful people, outcasts since childhood. The book was well-researched and included fascinating interviews from family, friends, and classmates. The author was careful to decipher between fact and hearsay. I did find the occasional use of song lyrics and political sermons weak, but nothing is perfect. I loved reading details of Morrisons early life, that I have never heard before. This is the first book that details Pamela Courson's life. The media portrays her as a wallflower and trivial, but she was the most important person in Morrison's life.
a good read.......2007-05-18
i have always been intrigued by the life of jim and his so called cosmic wife pamela, they are the kind you knew would not make it pass 30, they lived a wild life , people loved them, hated them and criticized them , this book its entertaining as it talks about pamela like no other book, still i think she had something to do with his dead, perhaps she did not remenber been herself a heavy drug user..we will never know for sure what happened
but i still recomend this book.
Throws the Door open on the Lizard Queen and King..........2007-03-20
I'm a big fan of Jim and The Doors and have been for many years.
Although Pam is mentioned in almost every book on this subject and her romance with Jim is the stuff of legend, most books tell you little about her . And so she remains a shadowy figure in most peoples minds. This book painted a much fuller picture of Pam as a real person.
I found out many things about Pam and Jim that I didn't know and because of that I enjoyed the book very much.
I also was glad of the Author's attempt to paint a more positive picture of Pamela because sometimes I think she is unfairly blamed for things that were beyond her control, I do have to call into question some things in the book. Number 1 being that Pam didn't have a serious heroin problem before Jim died.
There is just too much evidence to the contrary and this has been confirmed by many people who knew Jim and most recently by Jim's bodyguard in 2006.
I think either the friends of Pamela who said this in the book were either unaware of how serious a problem she had or were trying to counter the image that people have of Pamela as just a junkie, which is something I cannot blame them for.
The book is well written and brings home again with a new freshness in spite of all of the years that have passed, just how tragic the deaths of these two young people in love really were.
You're lost, little girl.......2007-03-04
Butler set out to write a biography of Pamela Courson, but inevitably we end up viewing Pam primarily through the lens of her relationship with Jim Morrison. Butler dug deep while researching Pam's life, and does an admirable job of portraying a vulnerable girl who struggled to be seen as an individual. The charisma, ego and over-the-top substance abuse of Jim Morrison appeared to overwhelm Pam, who chose to escape through her own drug use. The book reveals Jim Morrison in a previously unexplored context. Reports of his rampant womanizing are legendary, yet there was a connection to Pam that could not be broken. Butler quotes several Doors insiders as stating that Jim kept returning to Pam because she was the only person, bandmates included, who stood up to him. I would have liked to see that aspect of Pam developed more thoroughly, rather than the emphasis on star-crossed lovers.
On first read I was disappointed that Pam was portrayed in the context of her relationship with Jim, but after re-reading and much thought, I realize that this is the only way we can attempt to know Pamela Courson. The 60s was the beginning of the feminist movement; in that era, band chicks were seen as an adjunct to the rock star. Agents and managers often encouraged the male stars to keep their significant relationships secret. Many women kept their personal aspirations hidden and basked in the reflected glory of their partner. Despite the tumult of her final years, Pam fought to be her own person and life life on her terms.
The romance of Pam and Jim wasn't what was tragic; the real tragedy was the excess which cut short their lives. Butler's book is a nice addition to a collection of Doors biographies.
Jim Loved Pam. Pam Loved Jim........2007-02-17
It's that simple. These two star-crossed 'Cosmic Mates' are among the most intriguing Rock couples of those long ago 1960's. I bought this book as a Doors fan. I would have enjoyed it anyhow. Patricia Butler adds some interesting previously unknown details about Pamela and Jim Morrison-especially Pam. She mentions in the book that she had received so much information-too much to include in the book. I was left wanting more and I hope she writes another one. I have to add that I would love to see that footage of Pam and Jim cavorting in a Moroccan (if memory serves) cemetery. I wish the executors of Jim and Pamela Morrison's estates would let their fans see it. As well as other footage. One day maybe. Anyway one thing is very clear to me. Jim loved Pam. Pam loved Jim. They were meant for each other and I like to think of them together forever in the 'ether' as Ray has phrased it. Heaven I mean. Peace and Love. :)

Better late than never.......2005-12-30
Before reading this book, I couldn't help but wonder what a daughter who seemingly had devoted her entire life to embarrassing, humiliating, and politically opposing her father could possibly have to say about him as he entered the twilight of his life. Now, after reading the book, I'm still somewhat at a loss. The sentiments expressed are endearing, but the story line seems too slick, too polished, and perhaps a little too contrived to be easily believable. Is it really possible that the author could ignore her father's guidance and fret about such things as death all through her lifetime and then in the sunset of his life take solace in his thoughts and the examples he had set for her when she was but a child? I can't help but wonder.
Her introduction of political bias toward the end of the book also disappointed me. It seemed unnecessary; but it was also somewhat telling. By doing so, Patti made it clear that she never did, and at the time the book was written still didn't, understand her father, conservatism in general, or her father's conservative ideals. This was evident when she expressed surprise that her father could possibly believe that "God doesn't make distinctions on the basis of skin color" and went on to say that after hearing him say this she suggested to her brother that her father had spoken to the wrong convention. Ronald Reagan must surely have been one of the last people on earth who would believe otherwise; and either convention would certainly have cheered such a pronouncement -- albeit for different reasons. How could she not know that?
In any event, and regardless of her motives, I'm glad Patti Davis wrote this book. Hopefully, it helped set Reagan's mind at ease; and although it doesn't contain much new information about him, that which is included is quite revealing of his true nature and beliefs. So, despite its diminutive size and any questions concerning the author's objectives, it still makes a contribution to the Reagan legacy. As a minimum, it dispels the liberal myth that Ronald Reagan was not a spiritually motivated and deeply religious man. Hence, whether or not you question the author's motives, as I did, it is still worth reading.
Superb Memoir.......2005-08-30
What a beautiful memoir for a daughter to write about her father. Patti Davis, as we all know, was at one stage the anti-Reagan of the Reagan family (hence her dumping of her father's surname.) For whatever reasons, she was at war with herself and consequently, she blamed her parents. Patti has since found peace within herself, and re-discovered her great love for her parents and indeed their great love (and patience) towards her. She also writes in an exquisite manner.
The title for this work comes from a question that the young Patti asked her father, namely, whether it was true that when you saw a falling star, it meant that an angel had just died. Ronald Reagan replied comfortingly, "Angels don't die" and this explanation was just one of many that he gave to his daughter's questions about life and death, and in doing so he imparted to his daughter the greatest gift anyone can give: the gift of faith.
Ronald Reagan, Patti explains, lived what appeared to be a `charmed life' and I find her explanation of this to be fascinating. To live a charmed life you have to be able to stand back from your life with its various problems in order to gain some perspective. The space between yourself and the situation you find yourself in is then filled with prayer. God takes away your fears, and gives you insights and answers in your heart.
Ronald Reagan lived his entire life with this ability to stand back and offer everything up to God. That's how he managed to take on the responsibilities of president with such ease and remain himself. He always treated people equally, be it a King or a doorman.
Though it didn't set out to do so, what I think this book leaves the reader with is the truth that in the end its not what level of success you might achieve in life financially or politically, what's ultimately important is character. And, Ronald Reagan's character was one of the most evolved that a person can attain.
I recommend this book for the above reasons; it's also good in that it details some of the supernatural occurrences surrounding Reagan (including angelic visitations) and helps readers in their own appreciation and understanding of their relationship with their parents.
Wonderful.......2005-02-15
I really enjoyed reading this book. It tells of how much faith Reagan had and also how he gave her the greatest gift ever...faith. Wonderful, touching quick read.
This Patti Davis Book received NO press hype, yet it is a be.......2004-06-12
There is a bitterness toward Ronald Reagan that does not subside. As the man was laid to rest on June 11, 2004 - there were two Tribune Columnists in South Florida that blamed President for AIDS epidemic caused by budget deficits. According to these elitist critics, Reagan created class warfare. Yet as we have witnessed from the Atlantic and Pacific Coasts, The Gipper's mourners came from all walks of life.
When Patti Davis wrote scandalous books about her family, it was front page news. I found "Angels Don't Die" on the bargain rack of a bookstore chain shortly after publication. Like Ruben "Hurricaine" Carter's out-of-print book "The 15th Round," sometimes you do not find a book, sometimes the book finds you.
Patti wrote a book in which she reconciles with her father. "Angels Don't Die - My father's gift of Faith" is a spirtual book of common sense philosophy and conviction. Patti comes to grips with her father's emotional distance. Despite his showmanship and gregarious nature, Patti learns that her Daddy was really a very shy man.
This is a great book for people with older parents,
especialy as a coping tool for Baby Boomers and
Generation X reconciling with the World War II Generation.
books.......2004-06-10
I have read several of her books. She's a good writer. I admire her nonconformity/questioning/candor/spirit/honesty/empathy/intuitionand altruistic love for her family. There were troubles in their family. There are troubles in every family or so I've heard. There was justifiable questioning and normal rebellion. What family hasn't experienced this? She helped to eliminate the mystic of famous people being perfect for me. The books she writes are not just about her family, but they do encompass the members as a portrayal of idealogical norms at the time, some of which she did not agree with .She was/is very vocal/honest. I believe that she writes from her heart and the book, for her, was cathartic. She tried to deduce, through her writing, what the problem was and how to fix it. She wanted to help her family, while, at the same time show their true nature. I want to extend, as always, my highest regards and heartfelt condolences during their time of grief.

THE FIRE THAT WILL NOT DIE.......2007-01-12
Excellent book, I would read " To Sleep With The Angels " first and then this book. That is the order in which I read them and it was very imformative. You get the overall view and then the view of a person that went through this disaster.
a clear authentic record of a soul.......2006-12-26
I don't know that one can 'review' such a book the same way you can review a novel about pioneers or a non-fiction work about politics or hunting. This document of Miss McBride's is valuable because it is a historical record of challenges that most often are not written about by the victim, but by journalists and other 'authorities'. This soul is an authority on her own life.
When I first read this work and now again, I have to say that it is a genuine memoir that does not shy away or try to protect the reader. Just as such a memoir of a survivor ought be. I think the pages here are a testament to the author finding her way back despite the lack of pathways offered. That is the heart of this work, that she finds her way.
Burn Victim's Experience.......2006-03-14
I was disappointed that there were only a few photos (which were printed on the page, not photo plates). I sympathize greatly with Ms. McBride's experience, which I have no doubt was absolutely terrible. When I received the book, I paged through it and was disappointed with the almost constant repetition of thought-lines that became rather tediious. If one were to cut out the repetition, the book would be about 1/3 its length. Very little is said about the OLA fire itself, and even the months of treatment and recuperation - while one could never say this should be "interesting", one would not expect it to be verbosely boring. By contrast, I found "To Sleep With The Angels" to be spellbinding and sobering.
Well written and gives you an appreciation for modern medicine.......2006-01-19
With medical science now making great advances in treating burn victims using synthetic skin grafts (and hopefully with even greater advances on the way), this book brings home (through the personal experience of a survivor of the fire at Our Lady of the Angels) the deep physical and psychological scars that stay with a burn vicitm for life. The author refers to herself as a "burn," which also reflects her experience in a time when those with scars or handicaps were not viewed so much as people with difficulties, but instead as walking embodiments of their disfigurement. This book is well worth reading. I recommend it highly.
Emotions will run the gamut from anger and sadness to joy.......2004-04-08
Michele McBride is an inspiration for all of us. Never again will I complain of little aches and pains, after reading what this woman endured for more than forty years after the tragic fire. I had no idea that being burned affects your muscles and joints making them practically unbendable, and also interferes with your circulation. Michele rose above the ashes of this tragedy and can teach us all how to cope with disaster. The most horrible part of the story is how the community in which it took place basically fell apart after the fire. Children, adults and clergy alike were encouraged NOT to talk about the fire at OLA, when talking and expressing grief would probably have been the best therapy for the survivors. I lived in that neighborhood and many people said that the neighborhood "changed" because of a shady real estate practice called blockbusting. I think the neighborhood changed because the heart went out of it when all those children died - the people couldn't cope and moved away.

Book Description
Prentice Dobson has just lost her job, her boyfriend, almost everything that has until now made her feel complete. To collect her thoughts and mourn her younger sister's recent passing, Prentice leaves the city for her small hometown in Georgia. But there is no comfort to be found in the beloved town of her youth-the town is aquiver with the news that her Uncle Faris' grave has been dug up, perhaps by vandals. And Prentice begins to doubt the simple reasons she has been given for her sister's death. She needs help, desperately.Just in the nick of time, in steps the baggage-toting, wisecracking guardian angel, Augusta Goodnight, sent down from Heaven for just such emergencies. Perhaps Heaven's best angel-sleuth, Augusta usually tends to Heaven's vast strawberry fields, but for people at their wit's end, like Prentice, she is always on-call. In her guardian angel, Prentice finds the strength she needs to investigate the lives of her dead relatives, although, in the case of Augusta Goodnight, "dead" is relative. Resourceful, amiable, and literally down-to-earth, Augusta helps Prentice try to both uncover the reasons for her sister's death and cover her uncle's grave. Mignon F. Ballard's charming and funny mystery, starring the unstoppable Augusta Goodnight, is the second in a series hailed by critics as "heavenly."

Customer Reviews:
The First Was Better.......2002-04-17
I enjoyed Angel at Troublesome Creek as a light cozy, and was looking forward to the second installment.
Unfortunately it is disappointing. There is not enough of the charming angel, and not enough mystery.
Clues appear without effort on the part of the heroine. She just follows the path laid out before her. Her reactions to learning secrets about her sister seem unreal. There is no grief, no discovery, just rotely following the clues where they lead.
The basic plot is OK, but it is great need of a rewrite to fill in the characters, the emotions, the people we are supposed to care about.
Second of the series as good as the first.......2002-03-22
Prentice Dobson is spending time at the old family house. Her father and sister have died recently, her mother has moved away to the city, her reporter boyfriend has moved to London, and she's lost her job at a magazine in Atlanta. She has lots of time to reflect on how her life is going. On a routine visit to the family cemetery, she finds that her Uncle Faris' grave has been dug up and a strange corpse is in it's place. Fill in Guardian Angel Augusta Goodnight arrives to assist her with her troubles, when she finds out that her deceased sister may have had a child, and the child's crazy grandfather will do anything to find him.
There is alot going on in this book, and the various mysteries are not necessarily connected. I read this one from start to finish in one night. The characters are wonderful and quirky, and the angel isn't too angelic. Good, fast, read!!!
An Angel To Die For.......2002-02-21
The concept is brilliant (an angel helping out) and the book was entertaining however I just wished there was a bit more of the otherwordly included in the book. So much is made about the angel when in actuality you hear or see very little of her or her powers. She doesn't seem all that angelic.Phila
A 'KILLER' OF A COZY!.......2002-01-19
The author, Mignon Ballard, has a wonderful imagination and a great premise for a new series of cozy mysteries. A guardian angel by the name of Augusta Goodnight appears from above to help Prentice Dobson solve a mystery. Prentice is on to something and she is not sure what that might be. Will Augusta keep her safe and solve the mystery?
I would have enjoyed learning more about Augusta Goodnight, and to see more of her. Prentice does most of the sleuthing. There is not much of Augusta in this mystery. The back cover of the book calls Augusta a "baggage-toting, wisecracking, guardian angel". This statement must have come from the previous mystery. I did not see this side of her. The mystery would have been more entertaining if there had been more character development in the guardian angel. There were also several "sub-plots" throughout the book which were enjoyable. It just needed more of Augusta Goodnight.
Not worth it.......2001-11-26
I loved the idea of this book and was hoping for good things. Unfortunately they weren't forthcoming. The plot was too elaborate, the 'angel' of the title was actually very little in evidence throughout, and I rapidly became bored with the characters. I won't be looking for the other book in the series.

This book has been a great comfort to me after our the deaths of our babies. So many questions answered with quotes from prophets and also scriptures. Great for anyone who has lost a child, miscarried, had a stillborn baby, even for parents of children with mental challenges. Very spiritual and tender, well documented answers. Where are they now? If they are babies still, who will care for them? What do they do there? Questions we all wonder about.

Did I Really Die? My Dream Makes this Stranger Still........2003-01-30
I experienced a wonderful Dream 2001-02-04. My father who died in Dec. 1990, came to me in a dream. I dreamt I was in our old house in Wheeling, WV. Dad came in the room and indicated he had returned from a trip. He started talking. He was looking for a book, one of his books and couldn't find it. I asked which book and he said it was his Jim Davis book. We couldn't find it and Dad had to leave so I told Dad I would try and find it.
When I awoke I told my wife about the dream and then went on line to find at Amazon.com what book it might have been. Right away I found books on Garfield, by Jim Davis. I felt certain that wasn't what the dream was about. Then I found this book "Did I Really Die?" by Jim Davis and about Jim Davis. I read the review and felt sure this was the right one. I ordered the book and read it and feel more certain.
My father was a Presbyterian Minister, and the dream was on a Sunday morning. Dad has been in other dreams, and at times with encouragements. This book does not exactly reflect Dad's way of expressing religions matters, when he was with us, but the overall Tolerance and Love certainly seem like Dad.
I am a VietNam Infantry Vet, a church elder, a professional, communicty leader, etc. etc. At times, I have expericned ESP and other message dreams. Planned to post this earlier but I've been so busy I feel like I'm juggleing cats. (Got that from a funny skit on TV)

For anyone to understand this book, they have to have a thorough knowledge in metaphysics, hypnosis, the subconscious mind, perhaps a tad bit in quantum physics, a mind that works, a higher mind, and the knowledge that we as creators create our reality in and out of body based on our beliefs, fears, etc.
Good books worth reading are Robert Monroe's series, far journeys, journeys out of the body and Ultimate Journey. He also has a mailing list and a research facility in Virginia that legitimately studies the Out of body experience, He is also the originator of the Hemi Sync tape. Its worth reading and very fascinating.. a prerequisite for ANYBODY who TRULY wants to understand the nature of realities, how things work, and get BEYOND simply believing what you see in front of you. Thats not how other realities work, in that sense alone. What you see in front of you isnt necessarily what it appears to be. To do that, is to do a disservice to one's own spiritual growth and cerebral saavy.
The meaning of life, and experiences with an afterlife.......2001-02-10
With a wealth of unknown factors and unproven theories about death, many people fear it because they believe it will be the end of their personal existence. Others believe that when their mortal life ends their fate is the hands of someone else as to whether or not they lived a life worthy of passage into heaven. With few exceptions, people who have experienced a near death event, return to their physical form with a refreshed perspective on life. They have acquired a new hope, a deeper understanding of true happiness, a renewed appreciation for life, and posses an enhanced knowledge. Author Jim Davids is one of those who have witnessed life after death. His journey to a sublime paradise where pain, hate, or unsettled feelings simply did not exist. Highly recommended reading for students of metaphysics, spirituality, the meaning of life, and experiences with an afterlife, Did I Really Die? is a detailed and informative account of his near death experience and what he discovered as a consequence.
