5 out of 5 stars Bump in the Night-Nora Roberts.......2007-01-10

I enjoy this series by Nora Roberts, and this book kept up with her great work. I always hate when the book ends and want the story to keep going.

5 out of 5 stars Great.......2006-11-10

As usually J.D. Robb (Nora Roberts) has brought us the complicated Eve Dallas with all her baggage, passion and skills, to solve a murder. The complicated relationship between her and Rourke and the realistic futuristic setting make it all intriquing and enjoyable

4 out of 5 stars Not the best, but still enjoyable........2006-10-23

I purchased this book for #26 in the In Death Series.
In story number one, we have Haunted in Death. The year is 2060 and Eve is investigating the murder of Radcliff C. Hopkins III at a building that that been haunted since the disappearance of Bobbie Bray 85 years ago. Bobbie's skeleton is found near Radcliff's body and the murder weapon is the same for both murders. I thought the idea of this story was excellent and very unusual, however it was missing something to me. Still good but not perfect.
In the second story,Poppy's Coin a young girl is told a story of a magic coin and true love occurring in 1817. David Lindsay comes home from war with two children to raise, only one might be his. His daughter gives him a magic coin and he wishes for employment. Soon after a wealthy widow hires him to be her escort at all the Society events. This story is nice and entertaining.
In the third story,The Passenger, Grace is a photojournalist documenting strange happenings on Spirit Lake. Where boats and planes are known to disappear and strange lights appear. Josh is an adventurer, his next stop, Spirit Lake. While flying he notices a stowaway passenger just before his plane crashes. Grace sees the crash and rescues him. Another entertaining read.
In the last story,Mellow Lemon Yellow, Charlotte comes face to face with her childhood imaginary friend at her fathers funeral. Mel teaches her how to live life fully. She meets Sam and it's a nice ending to a good story.
This is a good book and each story is unique and enjoyable. I just expected a different kind of paranormal from the title Bump in the Night.

3 out of 5 stars Not unreadable, nothing special.......2006-08-08

Novelettes for the beach, perhaps. These are 4 novelettes (or novellas, I've never really been able to tell the difference) written especially for this collection. Many people will see this book pop up because they've purchased other J.D. Robb books, and if you are someone who is collecting every single bit of the "In Death" series, then I suppose you'll need this one. However, it's not really a very good story in the series. The theme of the book being "paranormal" stories, Robb has to try to fit something spooky into Eve's normally rational and scientific world, and frankly, I don't find that it fits well. The story and the plot itself depend entirely on things that could have happened in 2006 as easily as 2060; the part that's supposed to make it 2060 is that the murder has been done with a gun, and guns are quite rare in 2060, so that the other detectives and the medical examiner's office are not familiar with gunshot wounds. But the entire story could have been written without the paranormal element supposedly being there, or set in any year in the modern era, and would have been almost exactly the same.

The second story in the book is a Regency romance, with a brief modern frame around it, and about the only paranormal element is the "magic coin" upon which our protagonists in the Regency era, and then our protagonist in the modern era, make wishes. Since I like the Regency era, I actually enjoyed this story more than the J.D. Robb story that called my attention to the book; the Regency story is a better representative of its kind than the Robb is of its series. It may be a disappointment to some because the paranormal element is so small; if you are thinking to buy this book because you are specifically interested in paranormal phenomena, you probably won't find enough here to be satisfying.

In short, by having people who usually write in specific subgenres and specific time periods try to add something paranormal to their stories, it lowers the quality of both the period pieces and the paranormal elements.

5 out of 5 stars Alfred Hitchcock Presents: Stories that go bump in the night.......2006-02-07

Stories that go Bump in the Night is a collection of short (and chilling) tales written by various authors, selected by the Master or Suspense himself. They are all different and unrelated in plot and style, but they each have in common an aspect of gruesome murder, or a macabre twist that forces you to read on, and yet makes you shiver when you're done. One of my favorite stories was Easy Mark by Talmage Powell, about a seemingly defenseless man, who walks into a drug bar and is subsequently robbed of his car and some money. What the-would be assailants don't know, is that the body of this man's wife, whom he murdered, is in the trunk, thereby making them the easy marks. However, I really liked the style of writing that Theodore Sturgeon used in The Other Celia, which is about a peeping Tom who spies into the life of someone not human. The language the author used made trespassing sound everyday. I think that Hitchcock chose some really good tales that I would have never read to be in his book. I loved how many of these yarns were similar in effect, and yet different as far as the plot goes. It's amazing how much oomph a writer can put into such short story.

3 out of 5 stars A Little on the Weird Side.......2006-02-05

I have read several of Echo Bodine's books and I think she is a brilliant and gifted writer and psychic. My primary issue with this book was that some of the letters were really out there and sound like they were written by people who were 1. Looking for attention and made up the goofiest story they could manage in order to get in the book or, 2. They may need to see someone regarding a medication adjustment. I am a believer in Echo's gifts and in the presence of spirits, so my issue isn't that. Just some of the things people asked about or claimed to experience seemed WAY out there and very difficult for me to believe. As a result, I spent a large portion of the time I was reading this thinking to myself "Yeah, RIGHT" or some similar mental reply. Needless to say, that detracted from the book.

      5 out of 5 stars Interesting.. .......2005-10-30

Wow! I read this book in a day and I am pretty impressed. Everything that Echo talks about all seems to make sense. All my questions or thoughts that I might of had about ghosts and spirits were answered.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Ghost Guide!.......2005-06-27

I have now read everything this author has written, and she never ceases to amaze me with her great writing style & genuine care to provide lay-persons with the info. they seek. Whether it's about intuition, the soul, psychic development, or ghosts, you can find what you need in Echo's books.

This particular book, "Dear Echo", contains EVERYTHING you ever wanted to know about ghosts. Have you ever wondered if a ghost can hurt you, or why there are any ghosts out there to begin with? You'll find the answer here. Or, have you ever wondered how you can "get rid of" a unwanted otherworldly guest? Echo provides specific steps to do just that.

If you are at all interested in the subject of ghosts, even if you're "scared to death" of them (or especially so if that's the case), then this is the book for you. It's easy to read & filled to the brim with great information - you can't go wrong with this one!

5 out of 5 stars Sincere Replies, Sound Advice.......2002-11-14

Echo Bodine's style of writing is comfortable, as if you were sitting across the room from her, sharing a cup of hot chocolate, and just conversing. This easy to read book of letters comes across as sincere and offers practical information and advice on every topic I can think of as it applies to ghosts.

        Book Description

Echo Bodine didn't want to be a psychic. In fact, she resisted it for a large part of her life. She tried to ignore the voices she heard, the spirits she saw, and the way her hands got warm when she was near a sick person. But Echo couldn't. Relax, It's Only a Ghost is not only the story of how she eventually came to terms with her psychic abilities, but also the story of her unusual experiences as she started to put those abilities to work helping other people.

Echo introduces us to wild assortment of ghosts. Meet Kevin, the ghost who didn't know he was dead. Follow Echo into the house that was home to several different ghosts, including two small children giggling in a closet and a prayer group in the living room. Or, encounter Bob, the ghost who was in love with the owner of the house he inhabited.

Echo relates tales that are often funny, sometimes unnerving, and always amazing. Her stories are entertaining and informative and will provide reassurance to the millions of us who have encountered 'things that go bump in the night.'

4 out of 5 stars Ghostbusting, Psychics, and Spirit Guides.......2007-03-23

This little book, just slightly over 100 pages, provides insight into the world of Echo Bodine, ghostbuster and psychic. Ms. Bodine gives us many case examples of what she does, and she supplies us with the details that make us understand how difficult it can be to convince a ghost to go on to his/her new life on the other side.

Ms. Bodine spends a bit of time at the beginning of her book explaining how she came to understand and develop her talents for seeing and communicating with the dead. At first reluctant, she began to see her gift as a valuable service to those whose homes are the earthbound choices for the dearly departed. The author then spends a good portion of the book on what the reader really wanted; she gives us details of the many cases she's been on and even provides us with tips on convincing the dead it's time to move on. We realize that the dead are as varied as they were in life, and some of them have big issues that are unresolved. Ms. Bodine does her best to rid the homes of the pesky spirits and help said spirits at the same time.

Regardless of whether or not you believe in Ms. Bodine's abilities, this is a fun book with some interesting ideas and circumstances. Fun and informative, this one is an enjoyable read.

I read this book to help out a friend who asked me to clear some ghosts from her home. I do different types of spiritual work, but ghosts aren't my specialty! I decided to read this book and follow her tips. The book helped quite a bit, and I think the ghosts have crossed over. Interesting book! Have no fear, Echo Bodine's book is here.

I recently came across Bumps in the Night on a 100 Most Challenged Books list. I was a little shocked and disheartened... I LOVED this book as a kid. The characters and illustrations are warm and silly, not at all scary. The story teaches us that with an open mind, even things we don't understand can be a little less scary. I highly recommend this book for anyone, young or old.

I am a student at West Virginia State College currently taking a class called Children's Literature. Our instructor required us to read a banned/challenged book as part of our assignment and write our personal view of the book.

This is a hilarious book! I enjoyed reading it to my 8 year old son and he loved it. He thought it was so funny and not all scary. He loves scary stories, however, he did not find this book to be scary at all. I can see why some people might object to this book. It makes reference to a seance and a medium, but the book references it in a funny way and not at all serious. I would read this book to my classroom. I feel the children would enjoy and get a kick out of this book.

        5 out of 5 stars Halarious!.......1999-05-28

I had this book as a child. It is so funny, I still remember it. All of Harry Allard's books are fantastic.

4 out of 5 stars Extremely funny! Best animal seance ever! Lovable ghost!.......1998-05-13

Dudley the stork takes his friends' advice and gets Madame Kreepy to conduct a seance. He needs to find out why wierd things happen at his house when he's trying to sleep. My two eight-year-old girls loved this book. Even their older sister thought it was funny. Our favorite line in the story is when the ghost tells Dudley "...I gave you a great, big, wet, kiss in the dark. Did you like it?" Nickelodeon should use this book as a basis for their next half-hour Halloween special!

5 out of 5 stars Consensus of Reviewers.......2006-09-12

The consensus of reviewers is that this is a delightful anthology, sure to please fans who love their paranormal romance spicy hot!

        From Romantic Times Magazine
"Lili casts off caution in Blazer's "Haunted Redemption" when she agrees to play a vampire at a haunted house. Scott, a mysterious man, and a candlelit room cap off her evening. But his resemblance to a past love makes her uneasy. When the handsome vampire reveals his identity, Lili walks away. Hot sex, galactic vampires and asteroid showers -- not to mention an orgy -- make this one scorching tale.

"Jastra's life turns nasty after she's accused of murder. Her sentencing brings her aboard galactic vampire Dauthush's cruiser, and she becomes intimate with the hot-blooded warrior. His toe-curling caresses make her beg for more, but before they can discover if its love, he must fight to save her from another vamp in McCall's "Embrace Forever."

"In Williams' "Cassandra's Enchantment," the title character, a half-witch with vampire blood, and magical crime scene investigator Phineas find that forbidden fruit should be savored. Stepmom and stepson have often dreamed about "what if?" but when a spell and an ancient pact bring them together, they find that reality is better than fantasy."

"Not all bumps in the night are frightening, and this anthology proves that some bumping can be humorous and spicy hot!"

"This book comes in at just the right time and makes a perfect Halloween read. The supernatural abounds in this book and readers will love the characters is every tale. The relationships are hot and the tension is thick. These couples find ways to get around obstacles and whatever else gets in their way to be together. The fifth book in the series, number 5 certainly keeps the ball rolling with incredible stories that captures the reader's attention and takes them on wonderful journeys."

"I found all three stories in this awesome anthology to be enthralling and captivating. The characterization throughout the book is very well done and the story lines are all fascinating. I highly recommend Things That Go Bump in the Night V to anyone who likes paranormal stories of love and lust. I cannot wait for the next anthology in this terrific annual series from Ellora's Cave."

        From NovelSpot
"All three of these delicious tidbits are tied to one another, through theme and even a few of the characters. While not the kind of stories you'd read around a late night bonfire to scare your friends half to death, Things That Go Bump in the Night V would certainly get you in the right mood for Halloween--and maybe a few other things."

        From Erotic Escapades
"This anthology by three different authors keeps you spellbound until the last page. I enjoyed the three stories immensely and could not put the book down. These authors leave you breathless and begging for more as they tell of three sizzling stories that are sure to please."

5 out of 5 stars Ghosts and Ghoulies - As a matter of fact.......2005-08-07

This book takes a somewhat sober and non-sensationalized look at ghost and ghoul stories and legends of New England mostly centered in the Salem, Mass. area. There are two types of stories: old historical legends, featuring a lot of background research included going as far back as the 1600's; and newer 20th century stories in which the actual participants are interviewed first hand. Gives actual names and places of the people involved in the stories. The older stories are not the average historical information you've read a thousand times over in other Salem witch and ghost stories. Not being an afficianado on New England haunts, it was refreshing and something different to read. New Englanders may know some of these stories, but they were new to me, and not to be found elsewhere in any other ghost books in my collection. Some of these stories might be a bit frightening for small kids, and they will probably frighten most adults who are alone on a 'dark stormy night'. Buy the book, it is worth it!!

5 out of 5 stars EXTREMELY scary book! Standout: "The Boogeyman of Beggerly".......2002-08-13

This book really scared me. I mean, I was TERRIFIED! True stories of events that have occured in New England (my homeworld, I might add) that were of a not-so-just-natural...er, nature.

        Standouts:
"The Demon of Dover"--Creepy story, might involve a stray extraterrestrial, and altogether mysterious.
"The Boogeyman of Beggerly"--In Beverly, MA, a boy-up-through-his-years-to-man faces a terror that emerges only in the shadows of the night to both cause mischief (opening cupboard doors and windows, moving things around) and horror (the laughing at the foot of the man's bed when he was asleep--agh!). This one should be made into a movie!

Too bad this and the other books in its series, NEW ENGLAND MYSTERIES, are long out of print. Enjoy, and...leave the lights on. Trust me, after "The Boogeyman of Beggerly", you'll need them.
