1 out of 5 stars Republican Propaganda.......2007-09-28

This novel gets my "Razzz!" of the year award. I see all of the 5 star reviews and can only explain them by supposing that the people reading Flynn's books are looking for this particular sort of nonsense.
The hero is a HERO and a one of those bully boys for the President that take care of business that can't be left to those pinkos in Congress. If you have a loose sense of reality, and are among the 29% who still give Bush a positive approval rating (perhaps a redundant statement), this is the book for you. If not give it a miss and try some Lee Child, or the new novel "Volk's Game".

4 out of 5 stars Mitch Rapp Series.......2007-09-11

Always a good read when you can follow an intriguing character through several novels. The Mitch Rapp series by Vince Flynn is the best I have read since Ludlum's early days.

5 out of 5 stars 1st book I read in the Mitch Rapp series. Loved it so I went and bought the rest.......2007-07-25

Enjoyed this book so much I went and bought all the Mitch Rapp series novels. Really have enjoyed going through them from the start. About to start Executive Power. I highly recommend this book and author. Do yourself a favor though and start with Transfer of Power.

5 out of 5 stars Pushing all the right buttons.......2007-07-18

This is my first Mitch Rapp novel but it won[t be my last. A great story about the classic rogue CIA agent, but rogue for the good guys. And the book serves up rough justice on an assortment of bad characters, from imam apostles of hate, to inside-the-beltway paper-pushers, to amoral terrorist enablers. SPOILER ALERT. I mean, when you have the protagonist go to Saudi Arabia, strap a bomb vest on the evildoer's son, then blow up the son and the bad guy while flipping off a security camera, there isn't really anything more to do to satisfy the bloodlust of the reading audience, myself included. I only worry about one thing, which is that I share many of the geopolitical attitudes of the former East German bad guy. I hope Flynn isn't trying to tell me something.

Book Description

Her worst nightmare brought back to life, she risks everything for a second shot at justice.

For thirty years, FBI scientist Olivia St. Martin has lived with guilt and one abiding certainty–that while she wasn’t able to save her sister’s life, she did testify and helped to convict the rapist and killer. When shocking new evidence exonerates the man Olivia is sure she saw abduct her sister, she breaks every rule in the book to uncover the truth.

Driven by the possibility that she put the wrong man behind bars, Olivia discovers that a serial killer has been at large all these years. Believing that the monster has just struck again in Seattle, Olivia leaves her lab and poses as a field agent, sharing her unofficial investigation with a hardworking Seattle cop. Olivia doesn’t want to lie to detective Zack Travis. And she certainly doesn’t want to fall in love. But as the investigation intensifies, Olivia and Zack find that they’re rapidly losing control–over their hearts, their secrets, and a case that threatens to consume them.

3 out of 5 stars Genreic and Predictable.......2007-05-11

This is the third book in the trilogy, and I found all of them to be generic and predictable. The plots are like Lifetime Movies. They aren't awful, but they are certainly not unique.

4 out of 5 stars Good Finish.......2007-05-08

I agree with the previous reviews in that this one moved a little slow and took a little longer to read. I am not from Seattle, actually I have never been there, so the apparent errors in geography did not effect my enjoyment of the book. I still think it's worth the purchase price and will continue to read her work.

3 out of 5 stars What I Expected.......2006-08-30

After reading her first two books, I knew what to expect with the third and wasn't disappointed like some of the other reviewers. I like the fact that the romance isn't in your face or contrived but the attraction slowly works up to believable results. Good plots in all three books - yes, they're similar but I find no fault with that. Olivia and Zack were both very likeable. My favorite is still the first in series. Looking forward to her next three books.

3 out of 5 stars Not as strong as others in trilogy.......2006-07-05

I read both The Prey and The Hunt (this book's predecessors), and found them to be above average thrillers. I enjoyed them enough to eagerly pick up the The Kill to see how the trilogy would end. However, while the plot description sounded like it would make for another fast paced read, this one was surprisingly slow.

Aside from it being slower paced than the other two, I was also disappointed by the similarities in her plots. It wasn't until I'd read the third and looked back at them as a trilogy that I realized it was sort of like reading the same book over and over. Each story centers around a woman with a very tramautic and violent past. As a result, the woman becomes a jaded adult afraid to let anyone in. Enter hero who falls for the woman's crusty exterior and teaches her to love. All three stories also make an attempt with a back-up love interest, making for luke warm love triangles. This in itself is not bad, but by the third story, lack of originality was disappointing.

I too agree with the reviewer who criticized the errors. I don't consider myself too much of a stickler for accuracy and don't go out of my way to look for errors, but being from Seattle myself, I couldn't help but notice the glaring inaccuracies of this book. Not that they really affect the story as a whole, but they do signal a lack of attention by the author/editor.

Overall, this wasn't a horrible read. I did finish it, and was mildly interested to see how it would end. However, it's definetly a "take it or leave it" kind of novel. If you're dying to finish off the trilogy, this isn't horrible. But if you've never picked up Brennan before, read The Prey and The Hunt instead.

2 out of 5 stars Very boring and slow.......2006-06-21

Johnny B Good's review hit the nail on the head where this book is concerned. What's the point of going to details about things and places if you're not going to be accurate? Better to stick to generalizations.

I read The Prey and thought it was fairly good. The Hunt was okay, too but The Kill is so slow, I didn't even bother finishing it.

The story just went on and on with nothing of interest developing so that it was neither a romance nor a suspense. The H & H were boring and unattractive, Olivia really ought to be in therapy and Zack would have been better off without that obsessive woman in his life.

It didn't help that a personal dislike of mine -romance heroines older than early 30s and heroes older than early 40s. I like my romantic suspense with lots of action, suspense and hot sex. In real life, men and women in middle-age have romance and lots of hot sex, too, but I don't want to read about them.

I doubt I'll read another Brennan if this is the kind of H & H she favors and will stick to my usual sub-genre authors.

Linda Howard's romantic suspense Kill and Tell supplies readers with plenty of thrills and chills. As a nurse, Karen Whitlaw has seen more than the average person, but even she isn't prepared to identify the body of the father she hasn't seen since she was 13. The local detective on the case, Marc Chastain, informs Karen that her father, who was homeless, has been murdered. Still grief stricken over the recent death of her mother, Karen isn't prepared to examine her feelings about her father and his absence from her life. She is willing to accept that he was the victim of street crime until her home is burglarized and she becomes the target for some frightening "accidents." Whoever killed her father is after her, and the only hope she has for discovering why must lie in the notebook that Karen's father mailed to her mother shortly before his death.

Book Description

Some secrets need to be told...

Still reeling from her mother's recent death, Karen Whitlaw is stunned when she receives a package containing a mysterious notebook from her estranged father, whom she has barely seen since his return from the Vietnam War decades ago. Then, a shocking phone call: Karen's father has been murdered on the gritty streets of New Orleans.

Even if they lead to murder....

For homicide detective Marc Chastain, something about the case of a murdered homeless man just doesn't add up -- especially after he meets the victim's daughter. Far from the cold woman he expected, Karen Whitlaw is warm and passionate. She is also in serious danger. A string of "accidents" have shaken Karen to the core, and forced her into the protective embrace of the charming detective she vowed to resist. Together they unravel a disturbing story of politics, power, and murder -- and face a killer who will stop at nothing to get his hands on her father's secrets.

5 out of 5 stars It's not SUPPOSED to be reality, folks.......2007-01-20

Great story; hot hero. Don't know why so many "reviewers" are gripin' about how unrealistic this romance is. Many romances are not like our actual lives, okay? I mean, the cops I've been ticketed by were in no way similar to our favorite Chief of Police in "Open Season." More's the pity.
And I CAN believe that Karen fell for Marc Chastain so quickly. With her mother's recent death, then having to travel to New Orleans to deal with identifying her estranged father's body, and THIS MOUTHWATERING SOUTHERNER takes charge to assist her with making Dad's funeral arrangements? Heck, I'm not under any of that stress and Marc hasn't given me a shoulder to cry on and I'm already in love with the guy.
I had a friend in college who met and married her husband within a week. They were in their late 20s/early 30s and had two kids when she went back to University to get her degree and I almost had to wear a flame-retardant suit whenever I was in the same room with 'em. No icky PDA, but just that much chemistry between them. So yes, you and I may not have experienced what Karen and Marc do but it DOES happen.
Someone reviewing another author said that some of these reviewers need to get a real life instead of getting off on having their reviews posted on Amazon. That about sums up the way I feel about a lot of folks who really slam a writer's work.
We can agree to disagree; different strokes for different folks. But, people, as a newspaper editor I know how difficult it is to fill up a page with words and there are very few instances that I'll slam someone who's giving it the good old college try.
Linda Howard works her [...] off and it shows in every one of her books. If you don't like it, don't buy her stuff. But don't feel as if you're performing some Mother Teresa act of charity here by posting your catty remarks here.

5 out of 5 stars Kill and Tell: A Novel.......2006-11-03

Linda Howard does it again. I could not put this book down because I wanted to hurry up and finish it. I would highly recommend.

2 out of 5 stars Where's the plot?.......2006-09-14

In this book you'll read about a love story. Pathetic but at least a love story. You'll read about New Orleans, a nurses's life, a hit man that blunders once and again. But what about the main plot? Why everybody was interested in Karen's life? Why, you'd read about that at the last 50 pages or so. So if you only read the last pages you'll save a lot of time.

I think LH can write better than this.

5 out of 5 stars One of my absolute favorites.......2006-06-29

When friends are looking for a recommendation for a romantic-suspense novel, I always ask them if they've read "Kill and Tell" and "All the Queen's Men". These are two of Howard's best, and when I first read this (pre-Katrina) it made me want to a)visit New Orleans, and b) find myself a Southern gentleman. There seems to be a lot of indignation out there over the first love scene between Karen and Marc; personally, I award points to any author who even bothers to mention that a condom was used, and to any hero who takes the responsibility to procure a condom and put one on. If you have no problems with that, like the idea of slow-dancing in the New Orleans rain, and are looking for good romantic suspense - this one's for you.

4 out of 5 stars An enjoyable blend of romance, politics and murder.......2006-06-18

For most of her life, Karen Whitlaw has only had her mother for family. Thus, when her mother passes away, her whole life was shattered, leaving her alone with nobody except for a few friends at work. Then out of the blue, a package arrives from her estranged father whom she hasn't seen for more than a decade. Remembering how heartbroken her mother was when he walked out on them, she puts the package away without opening it. Then six months later, she receives a shocking phone call from a New Orleans' detective telling her that her father has been murdered.

Homicide detective Marc Chastain is one of NOPD's best; a hard-nosed cop who never misses a beat. And something definitely doesn't add up with this murder. But regardless of the oddities of his death, he knows better than to waste his time investigating the death of some homeless man. Then he meets the victim's daughter.

The moment she walks into his office, Marc thought Karen cold and unemotional. But it doesn't take long for him to see the vulnerability that Karen tries so hard to hide under a layer of toughness, a characteristic that thugs at his hear. For reasons inexplicable to him, he feels the urge to take care of her, realizing that she had spent her life taking care of others. And while he has always been protective of women, something about Karen brings out an urge fiercer than usual to shield her from everything. And God have mercy on anyone who dares harm her...

KILL AND TELL is a fast-paced blend of romance, thriller and murder. As Karen's life becomes endangered, and the CIA becomes involved in solving the murder, we are taken to the dirty world of politics and power, where one man will stop at nothing to prevent Karen's father's secrets from coming out. Along the way, we see the main characters drawn together by a strong attraction that goes beyond the physical. Karen's never had anyone offer her support and protection apart from her mother; that's why Marc's protective nature melted her heart.

This is a good blend of romance and suspense. This also introduces us to another very interesting character, John Medina, whose story is told in ALL THE QUEEN'S MEN. Despite a rather brief appearance towards the end, I was very intrigued by him and cannot wait to read his story.

Because of a shocking ending to the first Sin City book, many people wondered how successful Frank Miller could be with future tales of his no-holds-barred city noir. Enter Dwight McCarthy, a clean-living photographer who tries to avoid trouble because he knows what he's capable of. His tactics don't do him much good when a girl from his past (who he can't say no to) shows up and professes her love for him. When he finds out she's in way over her head, it looks as though trouble has found him. What's going to happen? You guessed it: people get hurt.

Book Description

It's one of those hot nights, dry and windless. The kind that makes people do sweaty, secret things. Dwight's thinking of all the ways he's screwed up and what he'd give for one clear chance to wipe the slate clean, to dig his way out of the numb gray hell that is his life. And he'd give anything. Just to cut loose. Just to feel the fire. One more time. And then Ava calls.

5 out of 5 stars Great Comic.......2007-10-09

This is a great comic book. I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys great artistic talent and a great storyline. :)

4 out of 5 stars Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03

Dodgy, deadly dames and manly male meatheads. Well, Dwight is not as dumb as all that, but he pretty much falls hook, line and sinker for the old slinking femme fatale routine. Those damned pheromones and all.

All is not as it seems, except for the hulking psycho bodyguard type. He is exactly what he seems.

5 out of 5 stars "There's a word for what I am.".......2007-07-23

There is a word for people like Ava Lord. Evil. I have read my share of crime noir, including Dashiell Hammett and Jean-Patrick Manchette, and can say that nothing by those writers comes close to the epitome of femme fatale like Ava. Destroying some men for money, others simply for fun, she is a Jungian archetype in graphic representation. She makes A DAME TO KILL FOR, in my opinion, one of the best books in the Sin City series.

She is also both the dream and the nightmare of Dwight McCarthy. Ava enters his life once again and, despite his better judgment, Dwight finds that he cannot resist her charms. Of course, just as he suspects, it is all a ruse. He is being used like any other man unfortunate enough to catch Ava's attention and winds up suckered into killing an innocent man.

This time, however, Dwight realizes enough is enough. With the help of Marv, the anti-hero of THE HARD GOODBYE, he decides to put an end to the one-woman wrecking ball's game. It is not an easy or pretty task, complicated all the more by Manute, a ruthless giant absolutely loyal to Ava. But the results are enough to maintain the reader's interest until the end. If one only wanted to sample the best of Sin City, A DAME TO KILL FOR would make the short list.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorites........2007-07-19

Once again Frank Miller's Sin City is fueled with bloody violence and dialogue that gives you goose bumps. Book 2 of 7, A Dame To Kill For is a tale of love and revenge. Miller's way of telling these dark noir stories is priceless. Be sure to check out the other graphic novels as well, and the movie too. I hope you enjoy this book!

3 out of 5 stars It's no... Big Fat Kill..........2007-01-03

For a graphic novel that has more artwork than words, it actually took me a while to read it. I tried reading a chapter a night, so it wouldn't be over like that. Overall the story is ok if all you are interested is in background information on the character of Dwight. And if anyone is a fan of the novels because of the movie, The story of Dwight will make some more sense after this is read. And know that this story in intertwined with the Marv story.

Book Description

Santa Fe Police Chief Kevin Kerney travels to a California ranch looking to buy some prime quarter horse breeding stock. Instead, he finds himself the prime suspect in a possible homicide when a guest at the ranch, Clifford Spalding, is found dead. Confronted by a determined cop unwilling to let him off the hook, Kerney decides to conduct his own investigation. As he digs into the victim's background, he learns that Spalding's ex-wife refuses to believe that her son, a soldier killed in Vietnam some thirty years ago, is dead.

Kerney digs deeper and soon finds himself sharing the woman's doubts: Did Spalding's current wife, a much younger woman, orchestrate his murder with the help of a lover? Did a California cop collude with Spalding to keep his ex-wife from learning the truth about her son?

Slow Kill races from West Coast to East Coast as Kerney attempts to find the answers to a thirty-year-old mystery and extricate himself from a situation that could ruin his career.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Slow Plot.......2007-05-20

Michael McGarrity is a retired policeman, like his alter ego, Kevin Kerney. You get the idea that the character is closely based on the writer, right down to the double initials in their names (M.M. and K.K.). Kerney has graduated in the series to the point that he's the police chief of Santa Fe, New Mexico, but since there are so few murders there, for this to be a murder mystery, McGarrity has to have Kerney go to California, shopping for horses, and stumble on a dead body.

The victim turns out to be a wealthy socialite, and at first the local authorities suspect Kerney of being involved, and investigate him. Once that dries up, the investigation turns towards the guys wife, an attractive younger woman who has a wandering eye. As the book moves slowly along, the killer becomes apparent rather early and easily.

There's a second plot in the later part of the book, involving Kerney's wife (an Army officer) and her investigation of alleged cover-ups involving Army personnel involved in sexual assault cases, some including actual rapes. This plot thread doesn't finish at the end of the book, leaving us to wonder if he's going to continue it in the next entry in the series.

I enjoyed this book, but only to a certain extent. This is by far the slowest of the Kevin Kerney novels, with virtually no suspense and no real mystery. The author has a good command of characters and dialog, and some of the interchanges between Kerney and the other characters were fun, but the plot is very slow and predictable. I definitely think that you'd be better off starting this series out with one of his other books.

4 out of 5 stars Unfinished?.......2007-03-13

I discovered McGarrity a few weeks ago and have been reading his Kevin Kerney (is there another series?) books as I find them, and out of chronological order.

I like McGarrity's books because:
1) They are easy to read. His books flow naturally and are easy to understand.
2) I like his descriptions of NM, which until now I thought of as a desert and cultureless state.
3) His characters are easy to like and well described.

The cons:
1) I guess I've been reading too many thrillers, or it's just that his books are not in the thriller category. I'm not sure if this is really a strike against his books.
2) This book, like another Kevin Kerney one, seems to end very abruptly without ending. I keep thinking how the author was going to wrap it up in 2 more pages, and he didn't.

Spoiler here:

First, just like the other KK book, he sidetracks into Sara's case, however we're left hanging there and I don't know if Sara's case is going to continue in the next book in the series.
Second, McGarrity never explains the deal with the son and how the scheme worked. It's like he just wrote the required number of pages and stopped there. A very abrupt ending.

Bottom line: A very nice, but not overly thrilling book, full of your favorite characters, but with a very abrupt ending. I guess I should try to read his books in chronological order to see if it makes better sense.
But I will continue to read the rest of the series.

2 out of 5 stars Slow Kill.......2006-09-13

McGarrity has disappointed the reader in his last two books, this one especially. The plot and storylines have not been up to par with his previous books, which I enjoyed immensely. His ending in Slow Kill does not wrap up the loose ends and appears hurried. His ending in his last book also seemed "hurried".

2 out of 5 stars A Disappointing Entry.......2006-08-30

I have read McGarrity's other Kevin Kerney mysteries, so I was looking forward to this one. The book has McGarrity's easy-going style that brings in a lot of the New Mexico atmosphere. That style was the strongest thing about the book. The plot (you can get summaries of the plot in other reviews) is convoluted. That is not necessarily a bad thing in a mystery novel. But it is a horrendous thing in a novel that seemed to be operating under limited space requirements, as if the author were under pressure to keep the book under 280 pages (it's 278 pages in hardback). The ending was rushed. Not all of the loose ends got tied up, at least not to the satisfaction of this reader. Perhaps McGarrity will revisit some of these plot elements in a later work. But the result was a book not up to the level of the rest of the series.

5 out of 5 stars Who woulda' suspected?.......2005-12-13

In the ninth novel in the Kevin Kerney series, Michael McGarrity stretches his writing ability along with the patience and stamina of his protagonist. Kevin Kerney, one of America's favorite cops, is a suspect in a homicide and the investigator who has Kerney in her sights is not one to let go easily. But is it even a homicide? There are no marks on the body, no obvious signs of a struggle, but the deceased didn't just die all by himself, did he? Then, there is that younger wife to consider. Could she and Kerney have conspired to kill the aging husband for his money and his land? Would Kerney's wife be happy about the whole thing? And what is all this about a secondary mystery that goes all the way back to the Vietnam War? McGarrity weaves a dense and devious plot, but the path of discovery is well worth the time it takes.

With The Big Fat Kill Frank Miller is at it again with another comics packed with guns, lovers, losers, and surprises. In Sin City's Old Town, the prostitutes run the show. "The cops stay out. That leaves the girls free to keep the pimps and the mob out." Sounds like an OK place, right? It is until a pushy, loud-mouthed guy who has had one too many drinks comes into Old Town and gets himself killed by the ladies. When they find out who he is, they realize that "it'll be war. The streets will run red with blood. Women's blood."

Book Description

Criminals have always called the shots in Sin City, whether bootleggers, gamblers, or politicians. But ever since the first dame set up shop in Old Town, those side-streets have been run by the women who walk the night. It's been a delicate truce, but now there's a messy body and the mob's looking to reclaim those licentious streets. They're going to have to put down a tight band of dangerous women and a guy named Dwight to do it. Now Dwight, he knows something that the mob's gotta learn the hard way: sometimes standing up for your friends means killing a whole lot of people...

Take Dwight, the man who gets involved with the wrong women. Throw in a cop, seeing one his old girlfriends.

Add a weekend at Bernie's routine, a small female ninja sword wielding killer, some tar pits, and a lot of whores with guns desperate to maintain the status quo after some cops die on their turf.

At the end, it is a Big Fat Kill.

3 out of 5 stars Not Bad, but Certainly Not the Best.......2007-07-23

After the strong start of the Sin City series of THE HARD GOODBYE and A DAME TO KILL FOR, the books take a bit of a dip with this third volume, THE BIG FAT KILL. It is not bad, but it lacks that stick-to-the-ribs impact of the first two, mostly due to characters that are not as interesting as others we have seen.

Dwight McCarthy is simply not as intriguing a character as Marv from Volume 1 (nor as interesting as John Hartigan in the volume that follows this). This was not a major liability in the second volume, A DAME TO KILL FOR, for the simple reason that Dwight was overshadowed by one of the most captivating characters in the series, the ultimate femme fatale of Ava Lord. But here, Dwight has to stand more on his own and, although certainly not a bad character, he also certainly is not strong enough to really hold the audience as much as we would like.

Yes, there are the girls of Old Town. But their appeal is diluted as no one character stands out. Miho is quite something, but the fact that she does not talk limits her development. And personally, I always thought Gail was just not up to snuff for the Sin City series.

The book is saved by the action. Miho taking care of business the hard way, the Irish mercenaries, the high body count, make THE BIG FAT KILL worthwhile. The weaker characters are a detriment but, fortunately, not a deal breaker.

5 out of 5 stars A violent joy........2007-07-19

Frank Miller's Sin City is still the greatest series of graphic novels out there. Book 3 of 7, The Big Fat Kill is a tale about Dwight McCarthy and how he tries to save the girls of Old Town from war with the mob and the police. Featuring stylized bloody violence, and Miller's gritty off-the-street dialogue, The Big Fat Kill is a great book and should be read again and again. Be sure to check out the movie. I hope you enjoy this awesome graphic novel!

5 out of 5 stars "You didn't flush...".......2007-04-11

With The Big Fat Kill, the third story in Frank Miller's noir-ish Sin City saga, he once again strikes gold. Dwight McCarthy, the one time shady photographer from A Dame to Kill For, is in over his head again. This time around, he interferes when his new squeeze Shellie gets roughed up by Jackie Boy, only to follow him to Old Town where he meets a bloody demise at the hands of Miho. Soon enough however, after they learn who Jackie Boy really was, the shaky truce between the girls of Old Town and the cops is going to come to a violent end, unless Dwight can save the day. Things that were hinted at in A Dame to Kill For, such as the relationship between Dwight and Gail, get more fleshed out here; while Miller ups the ante in terms of the stylistic violence he's made so popular, including a blood curdling action sequence involving Miho. If you've seen Robert Rodriguez' masterwork of an adaptation, you no doubt know that this story was included in the film, and if you've already read this, then you also no doubt know how spectacular this installment in the series is. All in all, The Big Fat Kill is one of the best chapters in the Sin City library, and if you've never given it a look, you've been missing out.

5 out of 5 stars Miller takes no prisoners........2006-06-18

A direct follow-up from what happened in "A Dame to Kill For," Dwight, with his new face, is now dating Shellie, one of the waitresses at Kadie's, the strip club, coming in between Shellie and her ex boyfriend Jackie Boy. When Jackie Boy and his gang roughs Shellie up at her apartment and heads into Old Town afterwards, Dwight trails Jackie Boy down, altering Gail and Miho of the approaching danger. Things get out of hand, and Miho slices everyone up. The big twist is when Dwight searches through Jackie Boy's wallet that he discovers he was a police officer, thus destroying the little "truce" the Old Town prostitutes have with the police force...unless Dwight can dispose of the body first, and then rescue Gail, who has been kidnapped by an angry, revenge-seeking Manute...

They often say three time's the charm, and that's the blunt truth with Frank Miller and his third installment in most likely the most artistically unique comic book series of all time, "The Big, Fat Kill." That spectacular style of exaggerated artwork and descriptive storytelling Miller is known for is still here, and it's never been better. Dwight McCarthy is back and Miller shows that he is still capable of what he can do, despite what Ava Lord did to him in "A Dame to Kill For." His relationship with Gail is also more focused on. Manute and, of course, Miho are back. Manute is even more sadistic and evil here, and Miho, as she did before, shows the killer born underneath her otherwise cute appearance. Speaking of which, I really like Miho. She just rocks. I've said before, I'll say it again: Miller is a genius. Strongly recommended, in addition to "The Hard Goodbye" and "A Dame to Kill For."

Book Description

They’re the legal world’s oddest couple—a shorts-and-sandals beach bum and a Coral Gables blue blood. Maybe the only thing keeping them from killing each other is that they’re on the same side.…

It starts with a 300-pound marlin stuck in his front door. Even by South Florida standards, where murderers outnumber mosquitoes, this registers as weird. And it’s not long before Steve Solomon figures out who’s making the bizarre threats. But how can he explain to his partner why an ex-client wants him dead? Victoria Lord was used to Steve’s cutting legal corners to win, but breaking the law to lose was downright unethical, even for Steve. Now Solomon & Lord is being bashed on local radio and a celebrity shrink with a homicidal me-first philosophy wants to be Steve’s new best friend. With a killer on the loose and legal disaster looming, is Steve’s lover and law partner about to walk out on him? Is this the end of Solomon & Lord?

4 out of 5 stars Hilarious but also a bit predictable in spots.......2007-04-25

I have enjoyed the previous two books in this series, and I enjoyed this one as well, but I did find that at times I could almost predict the dialogue and action in this one.

This is book three in the Solomon and Lord series, and it picks up with Steve and Vickie engaged but struggling to find common ground when it comes to making choices about their future as a couple. That's not surprising, considering how different their respective characters are, but it's not as hilarious a conflict as I'd have expected it to be.

Steve is Steve. He wears t-shirts that make you laugh sometimes and want to kick him in the toches others. He's still the kind of guy who acts like the law is a bit more flexible than Vickie thinks it is, and he's still the loving parent to his nephew, who creates really wicked anagrams in a nanosecond or two.

Vickie is still stuck in the pattern of expecting Steve to be someone he's not, and Steve is still stuck in the pattern of expecting to be accepted precisely as he is without having to make changes to accomodate a romantic partnership.

That stuff is very predictable, as is some of the mystery itself.

What's good about this particular book in the series is the way that Steve's sister gets brought in, her act fairly cleaned up, and Steve's dad becomes the source of much humor as he becomes ultra-Jewish, much to Steve's consternation. The mystery is okay--one of Steve's ex-clients is after him because Steve basically broke all sorts of attorney-client rules in order to get him found guilty a few years back. In the course of dealing with his now-free ex-client, Steve must solve a mystery involving pedophilia, and this part of the book is fairly decently done.

The ending is a bit pat for my taste, but it was funny enough.

Overall, this is an enjoyable read.

3 out of 5 stars Victoria Vacillates...Again.......2007-04-04

The mismatched pair of Solomon and Lord is back for their third installment, this time dealing with a murderous ex-client of Steve's. Years ago when Steve was representing Dr. Bill Kreeger on a murder charge, he found evidence of just how cold and sociopathic the doctor was, and did something a little unethical to get him put away. Now Dr. Kreeger is a radio shrink, and keeps lambasting Steve on the air, when he isn't going out of the way to be Steve's best buddy. Steve's partner in law and life, Victoria Lord, is disgusted with Steve's lack of ethics and starts to worry she may be doing the wrong thing moving in with him. Plus, Steve's nephew Bobby is hitting puberty, and along with his interest in girls, Bobby also wants to rekindle a relationship with his drug-addled, abusive mother. While Steve does mental battle with Dr. Kreeger, he keeps getting arrested for assault--on the radio. Will he be able to hold it all together and put Dr. Kreeger back behind bars, or will he wind up there himself?

While it has its share of chuckles and great, quotable lines (I love Solomon's Laws), the main story about Steve's struggle with Dr. Kreeger takes a backseat to matters between Steve and Victoria. That wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing, except it's just a rehash of exactly what went on between Victoria and Steve in their last book, The Deep Blue Alibi. Victoria vacillating over whether being with Steve is the right thing or not wasn't all that entertaining the first time around, and this time it really made the book drag. Steve's fears over losing Bobby are getting a little stale, too. It was hard to enjoy the author's wit while hoping the story would move along already. Steve is not the typical male lead, behaving irresponsibly and sometimes childishly, but that's his charm. Somehow, this guy who does everything the wrong way manages to get it right. In this book, however, Steve seems to be at a loss as to what's going on around him, and it just doesn't fit with his character. When things work themselves out in the end, it's more dumb luck than any planning on Steve's part.

This is a series definitely worth reading...so far. However, the author really needs to move things along between Steve and Victoria. Surely there must be some way to make the differences in the way they operate into a good plot, without having them wonder if they belong together...again. There is a good cast of eclectic characters here, between Steve and Victoria, Steve's dad, Victoria's mother, and Bobby, not to mention the colorful side characters. It's a shame they keep rehashing the same story, but I'll read at least one more Solomon vs. Lord novel before I give up.

4 out of 5 stars Not quite as good as its predecessors.......2007-02-03

Steve Solomon is beset on a number of fronts in Kill All the Lawyers, the third installment in Paul Levine's series of legal whodunits. The most worrying of his concerns is that a certain Dr. William Kreeger--former client, celebrity psychiatrist, and sociopath--is out of prison and out to punish Steve for having lost his case. Meanwhile, Steve's father, disgraced judge Herbert T. Solomon, has gone Orthodox. Steve's sister Janice has found Jesus in rehab. And Steve's nephew Bobby has found the "harlot-in-training" down the street. To top it off, Victoria Lord, Steve's law partner and lover, is having doubts about their relationship. She spends most of this book agonizing over her decision to move in with him.

Steve has found a worthy nemesis in his Dr. Phil-ish celebridoc, whose motives remain a mystery for the better part of the book. Ultimately Kreeger's story merges nicely with those of Bobby and Bobby's mother--who has shown up in Miami with her own brand of menace, the threat of removing Bobby from Steve's care. But it's unfortunate that Victoria takes a back seat in this one. Her relationship with Steve is less interesting here than in previous outings. Too little is made of Herbert Solomon, too, who shows up now and again to spout some Yiddishism and then exits the story. On a brighter note, there is some nice development in the relationship between Steve and Victoria's mother Irene, a woman at once magisterial and tawdry--and with a penchant for naked display. We watched Irene cavort naked poolside in Deep Blue Alibi. This time around, alas, we are made to look on as she splays her legs for an intimate waxing. The scene falls short of funny and into the realm of the shudder-inducing.

Kill All the Lawyers seems a little stale in comparison with the first two books in the series, the characters often more cartoonish than not. I'm hoping the next outing finds them a bit more nuanced than they were allowed to be here.

5 out of 5 stars Isn't it romantic?.......2007-01-22

Though I've not really researched the topic, my guess is that the first mystery solving couple appeared in Dashiell Hammett's The Thin Man. Subsequent to Nick and Nora Charles, there have been all sorts of mysteries featuring couples; probably the most popular one currently going is Faye Kellerman's series with Peter and Rina Decker. Kellerman should watch out, however: Paul Levine's series featuring Steve Solomon and Victoria Lord is good enough to give the Deckers a run for their money.

Kill All The Lawyers is the third in the "Solomon vs. Lord" series. In this novel, an old misdeed of Steve's has come back to haunt him. There was one time when he purposely lost a case; victory would have been simple, but he knew his client was guilty of multiple murders. Now, six years later (after serving a sentence for involuntary manslaughter), William Kreeger is out of prison and out for revenge.

Kreeger was a popular psychiatrist who was a darker version of Dr. Phil. Preaching a philosophy of selfishness (that even includes a very loose definition of justifiable homicide), he had parlayed his fame into big bucks and even after his prison time, he is able to have a radio show, which he uses to verbally attack Steve. Steve knows that Kreeger wants revenge, but even he can't guess at how sinister Kreeger's scheme will be, nor the depths of evil that Kreeger is capable of.

Meanwhile, Steve's lover and law partner Victoria is forced to question both Steve's ethics and his commitment to their relationship. Steve can be a great guy, but he's also a big-time flake, and their personalities definitely are opposites. Uptight Victoria needs to loosen up and ultra-casual Steve needs to be a little more dependable. As Steve watches his life unravel through Kreeger's manipulations, even Victoria begins to question Steve's approach to things.

One of the strengths of these books is that Levine realizes that - although these are books about a couple - he doesn't need to balance things equally between the two. Steve Solomon is the more interesting character (in some ways, an updated version of Levine's previous series character Jake Lassiter), so Levine writes more about him than Victoria. Although I felt that Levine fell off his stride a bit in his previous book (the good but not great Deep Blue Alibi), he is back to his full excellence here with a novel that is both suspenseful and quite funny and a good recommendation for fans of crime fiction.

5 out of 5 stars Better than Good.......2007-01-19

As usual, I wasn't disappointed by Paul Levine. I can't wait for his next Solomon v. Lord book to be published, so I stared reading his earlier Jake Lassiter novels. Very entertaining!
