Book Description

Today’s new breed, eXtreme projects are different. They feature high speed, high change, high complexity, high risk, and high stress.  While traditional projects follow the classic model of ready, aim, fire, eXtreme project managers succeed by shooting the gun and then redirecting the bullet while not loosing sight of their moving target. eXtreme Project Management provides a practical guide for leaders working under high risk and high pressure while producing the desired bottom-line results.  Based on Doug DeCarlo’s extensive experience in working with more than 250 project teams, his eXtreme project management model is built around an integrated set of principles, values, skills, tools, and practices proven to consistently work under conditions of rapid change and uncertainty. eXtreme project management is based on the premise that you don’t manage the unknown the same way you manage the known.  It’s a people-centric approach to high performance that makes quality of life a fundamental part of the project venture.

5 out of 5 stars Extreme project management is a complete misnomer here!!.......2006-06-17

What DeCarlo describes is not in any way an extreme project management approach but a common sense process of dealing with the insanity of the expectations for many contemporary projects. DeCarlo has great insight and sound advice on how people and processes must adapt to the business and technical requirements of modern projects.

Unfortunately, he overly chides and unceremoniously puts down the traditional "Newtonians" and their traditional planning and change aversion but somewhat begrudgingly recognizes their proper place in the long history and wide spectrum of projects, i.e., "you don't use eXtreme project management to shutdown a nuclear power plant for maintenance."

I think DeCarlo could have make his points without some of the denigrating remarks about traditional project management and managers, particularly, PMPs. He is certainly not unique with this tact among other non-traditional project management authors in the agile software development camp. Leading both traditional and extreme projects and even some which have both concurrent elements, I have found projects dictate their own approach as DeCarlo suggests in the final chapter.

His section on leadership and self-mastery is the keystone and guiding light of the book, a book which DeCarlo confesses is not about project management but about making a difference in an eXtreme world. This section alone is worth the price of the book. This book is really about leading people not managing projects.

One disappointment is DeCarlo's simplified two step prescription for the organizational transition from the traditional to the eXtreme process. He seems to abandon his own protocol on how to plan and execute the transition which should be the first eXtreme project to be undertaken. He seems to take the "Nike" approach to "just do it" by just adopting the Flexible Project Model and applying JIT project management to a few real projects. I have never worked in an organization, traditional or extreme, where it is this simple to implement fundamental changes without getting the buy-in that DeCarlo emphasizes throughout his book. Perhaps, in the next edition, DeCarlo will expand this section and give us some additional insights of how to make the organizational transition using the eXtreme project management approach.

Overall, DeCarlo has written a witty, insightful and common sense approach to eXtreme projects that just may work if you achieve self mastery, demonstrate courage and convince stakeholders to go along. It should be required reading for all students and practioneers of project management and others who are charged with constructively changing themselves and eventually the world.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, timely and a new addition to your permanent reference shelf.......2005-09-24

This excellent book dramatically advances the start-of-the-art in agile project management. It goes well beyond any other book on the subject, covering such new ground as how to work with stakeholders, how to assess whether projects are worth doing, how to create a useful plan, and how to work with senior management.

Unlike many agile books, this book is not specifically about software development. It is applicable to any product development effort. I'm a software professional, but everything in the book was relevant and interesting to me. Regardless of what type of product development you are doing, I recommend this book very highly.

This is not a book you'll read and file away. It will become a standard reference for years to come.

4 out of 5 stars Better than most, relates well to non-technical projects too.......2005-08-23

There is little I can add to the positive reviews of this book. Most of these works focus on the usual elements and concerns, with more or less emphasis the various aspects of successful project management. It's worth pointing out, though, that this is one of the rare books that also applies to projects undertaken outside the realm of the purely technical fields.

This is an area that is too often overlooked by traditional PM perspectives, but most "projects" in the world likely fall into the non-tech category. It is time more of us felt able to approach these situations with some of the tools, techniques and perspectives of the PM profession. Unfortunately few sources of guidance or encouragement exist for non-tech professionals, with the exception of Mr DeCarlo, who seems to well understand this void and is attempting to fill it.

5 out of 5 stars It's all here.......2005-05-23

Doug DeCarlo is a fascinating person and a delightful speaker. To the great benefit of readers everywhere, his essence is now captured in print. We are treated to "totoolitarianism" and project management by eye contact instead of icon-tact . Overcoming "Newtonian neurosis," we learn that "Reality Rules" and in the absence of knowing your purpose, trivia prevails. The way to cope with high [speed, change, complexity, risk, stress] projects is to employ eXtreme project management. "The eXtreme project manager is riding a horse in the middle of a stampede." DeCarlo helps managers succeed by explaining how to shoot the gun and then redirect the bullet while not losing sight of the moving target. In an early chapter on leadership, he says "unless you choose Self-Mastery, you are choosing self-misery....there are no victims, just volunteers." These expressions appear throughout the book, causing many chuckles and nodding of the head in violent agreement.

DeCarlo has written the definitive reference book on eXtreme project management. He covers the 4 accelerators, 10 shared values, 4 business questions, and 5 critical success factors-perhaps a bit much to remember in your elevator pitch but something to refer back to. Personal examples illustrate their application. A colleague stated that DeCarlo "may not go to Project Management Institute heaven" for his attacks on traditional project management. Instead he created a Parallel Universe in an on-going narrative across a number of chapters where characters apply the principles he identifies. He is not interested in "a group exercise in fiction writing" although DeCarlo is very creative himself. His goal is to light the candle so we avoid cursing the darkness.

My only caution in reading this book is to give yourself plenty of time-it is rather lengthy at about 500 pages. You will get the construct, tools, memorable expressions, and examples that cover the topic in detail.

5 out of 5 stars SOLID RESOURCE WITH LOTS OF INFORMATIVE SUBSTANCE........2005-04-23

Extreme projects are characterized by two or more of the following: high stakes; tight deadlines; innovation is primary; success measured only in bottom-line results; bureaucracy not tolerated; and quality of life is important. The book presents a holistic framework based on: 4 "Accelerators" (principles for unleashing motivation); ten shared values for building trust and confidence; four business questions that ensure customers receive value early and often; and five success factors. The four parts of the book focus on: the new realities of today and the mindset these demand; critical leadership skills; the flexible project model for extreme projects; and practical guidance on managing the project environment. The last 30 pages present a collection of self-mastery, interpersonal, facilitation, and project management tools and techniques. A solid resource with a lot of informative substance.

Book Description

Fifteen years ago, Tony Campolo's 20 Hot Potatoes That Christians Are Afraid to Touch pushed, pulled, and prodded Christians into serious consideration of controversial but critical issues related to the Christian life. Campolo challenged his more than 150,000 readers to re-think their convictions (and prejudices) and to do something about them!

Dubbed by Christianity Today as "the positive prophet" and "a ferocious critic of Christians left and right," Campolo lives up to his reputation in this latest book examining some of today's toughest questions and issues:

Speaking My Mind…Tony Campolo at his best.

2 out of 5 stars NOT An Update of 20 Hot Potatoes.......2007-05-09

I had used the book 20 Hot Potatoes Christians Are Afraid to Touch as a resource for teaching a Sunday School class years ago, and found it to be provocative, discussion starting, and yet grounded in the Biblical tradition of which Tony Campolo is a part (American Baptist). I thought this book might be an update of that book, and ordered it for use in teaching a class. I find it to be difficult for the participants in the class to understand. The chapters are longer than the earlier work, and the discussions are less thought-provoking.

For a reader interested in the sociology of religion or theology and its relation to current controversial topics, this is a good book. For the general reader, I'm not sure it's the best of its genre.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent survey of Evangelical issues.......2007-05-08

`Speaking My Mind' by sociologist and writer on Christian Evangelical themes is a remarkably refreshing statement of social and theological positions from within what is traditionally known as American Christian Fundamentalism. For me, who see Fundamentalism from the perspective of `conventional' (I am Lutheran), churches this book is a revelation of the diversity of social, political, and theological positions in this large block of American Christians.

While I find the title a perfect reflection of the book's point of view, the subtitle is a Gordian knot of misstatements, and I am very happy that the author points out that it was provided by his publisher and not by his own pen. The most misleading suggestion in this subtitle is the notion that Mr. Campolo is a prophet. His area of expertise is as a sociologist, and he speaks with great authority from that speciality. He also demonstrates a sound knowledge of Bible study, which serves him well in criticizing some Fundamentalist social positions that use scripture to support their stand.

I have been avoiding the use of `Evangelical' up to now in speaking of the body of Christians to which Mr. Campolo claims allegiance. This is because my own Lutheran church, following the lead of Martin Luther, emphasize the teachings of the bible and eschewed layers of interpretation laid on it by the Roman Catholic church in the 1500 years leading up to the Reformation. In fact, `Evangelical' is part of the name of the Lutheran church in America and the Luther inspired church in Europe is simply the `Evangelical' church. In spite of our sharing this name with the `non-liturgical' churches such as the Baptists (Campolo's denomination), Lutherans and Campolo's `Evangelicals' tend to interpret scripture just a bit differently. I will go out on a limb here and say that Evangelical fundamentalists take scripture just a bit more literally and may give just a bit more weight to the Old Testament than Luther and Lutherans, whose center of gravity is usually Paul's Epistle to the Romans, which demonstrates how the Gospel of Christ replaces Old Testament covenants. But the theological difference between liturgical and non-liturgical denominations is not the subject of this book.

Campolo's subject in Part I is a sociological discussion of how Evangelical Fundamentalists have become so successful at the expense of the more conventional liturgical denominations, commonly grouped together in The American Council of Churches. The vanguard of this success is the Reverend Billy Graham, whose crusades pushed awareness of this reading of Christianity with success similar to the `Great Awakening' in colonial America. And, not only were fundamentalists successful in recruiting domestic members, they have had far greater success in spreading missionaries throughout the world.

In Part II Campolo speaks of issues in both social policy and in theology. On the first, Campolo is lucid, authoritative, and convincing. On the second, where he is the amateur Theologian and semi-professional Bible scholar, he is less convincing, however, his weaknesses here to my Lutheran eyes may be less with Campolo's own positions than in his loyalty to the literal authority of scripture, and his reliance on the writings of theologians representing his wing of Christianity.

This appraisal in no way diminishes the superb value of Campolo's book as a survey of issues arising from Evangelical Fundamentalism.

Campolo's treatment of Evangelical Fundamentalism's doctrines on the role of women and on homosexuality is lucid and heart-felt. This is especially true of his position with regard to homosexuality, where he even disagrees with his wife by being closer to the center of Fundamentalist doctrine, while still criticizing the patent unfairness of many Fundamentalist spokespeople on the issue. The interesting theological issue here may be the kind of legalistic analysis of scripture at which our Jewish friends are so good. While there are New Testament statements against homosexual practice, especially from St. Paul, Campolo makes excellent points that suggest Paul was not railing against what we know as safe, consensual sex with a person of the same sex, but specific practices which may have even been aberrant in Hellenistic society, which at the very least, tolerated homosexuality. Campolo still comes down against homosexual practice (but not homosexual inclinations). I may suggest that the scriptural command to love your neighbor and `do unto others as you would have them do unto you' trumps specific bans, even from the pen of such an important source as St. Paul. This `prime commandment' is the one from which all other rules flow.

One topic I find most interesting is Campolo's attempt to reconcile Christian doctrine with science. By citing several important authorities, he makes an attractive case; however, the effort is ultimately misdirected. Scientific and Theological doctrines are simply in two entirely different worlds of discourse, and hooking the believability of a Theological doctrine on a scientific theory (in Campolo's case, Einstein's theory of relativity) is cast adrift if science disproves the theory on the basis of improved observation, just as Michaelson and Morley disproved the existence of ether, clearing the way for Einstein's theory. The most compelling image here is Wittgenstein's metaphor of language as a toolbox, with tools for a wide variety of purposes, and (my extension here) science's ruler and calipers cannot do the same job of Theology's hammer and saw. The sooner Evangelical Fundamentalists move on beyond the red herring of creationism, the sooner they will have more energy to devote to more substantial issues.

I was especially interested in Campolo's dismissal of John Robinson's famous short book, `Honest to God', which rested on theology from Dietrich Bonhoffer and addressed the `Is God Dead' issue so popular in the 1960s. This book awoke my interest in Christian thinking, especially as it was consistent with the compelling views of existentialist theologian, Soren Kierkegaard.

As a laundry list of `tough issues', this book is superb, and I have not touched on all of them. I only wish Campolo had given us a bibliography of all his sources.

4 out of 5 stars Words From a Wise Man.......2007-03-19

In this book Dr. Tony Campolo presents his thoughts and opinions on some of the issues of today: the war in Iraq, Islam, homosexual marriage, sexism, racism, etc... In the pages of this book, his thoughts are clearly presented.

Tony Campolo is a great preacher. In 45 minutes he can present God's message crystal clear stripped of all politics and other outside influences. If you're on an life issue, listening to him preach will clear it up. Is it ok for a Christian to drive a BMW? What should I do with my life? Is God a compassionate loving God of the New Testament or a righteous discilinary God of the Old Testament? Listen to Tony preach, and formerly unclear, muddy issues are clear.

He has 71 years of life experience most as a Christian. He has been a pastor, a professor, a manager, a father, and a missionary. Sitting at his feet and listening to what he says is well worth the time.

He makes some very telling observations. With respect to homosexuality, he notes that many who fight against homosexual marriages don't object to divorce and remarriage even though Jesus said that is adultery. With respect to Iraq, he pondered what would have been the result if we as a Christian nation followed the Biblical principle of loving (and feeding) thy enemy rather than over a decade of economic sanctions and no fly zones.

There are some very interesting original comments in this book. THIS IS NOT THE SAME OLD SAME OLD!

At the same time I must say that he is NOT a theologian. With respect to wives submitting to their husbands, he uses Ephesians 5:21-25. 5:22 says "Wives submit yourselves to your husbands" but 5:21 says "submit yourselves one to another". Tony claims that 5:21 Paul is speaking specifically to married couples and therefore he interprets the passage not as wives submit to your husbands but as submit yourselves one to another. He neglects to point out that Colossians 3:18 and 1 Peter 3, the same wives submit to your husbands command is given WITHOUT the "submit yourselves one to another" qualifier. He also neglects to point out 1 Cor. 11 that says that the head of the woman is man. Did Tony ignore this? Or was he ignorant of it? Either way is concerning. It is one thing to interpret the Bible in light of the culture at the time and conclude that maybe the literal application is not right for today's society. It is another thing to intentionally twist scripture so that it fits what you want to believe.

In the subject of whether there is a second chance for those who die without Christ, Tony is also kind of fast and loose with scripture.

But nevertheless, he has a lot to say, and a lot of what he says is very meaningful and well worth reading.

3 out of 5 stars Three Quarters of a Loaf Is Better Than None.......2007-03-06

Tony Campolo seems to relish his position as a gadfly in the evangelical Christian movement, being the born-again Christian who is mostly orthodox, but flirts a bit with liberalism. Whether this is sincere or a ploy to help sell his books (or maybe both), he is always worth reading, if only because he does raise some questions that need raising. Thus, as in many of his previous books, much of what is here is good, thoughtful, substantial stuff, while some of it makes the reader think that Campolo is doing a shout-out to the liberal friends he's made over the years. For every two or three paragraphs that made me say "Good point, man!" there was another that led to eye-rolling and "Oh, please..."

Some specifics: Chapter 7, Are Evangelicals Afraid of Science? is superb, a case of a well-read man with a decent understanding of science making the valid point that what we know of physics today ought to make religion and science see each other as partners, not enemies. Without making the reader's eyes glaze over, Campolo explains some basic Einsteinian theories and applies them to questions like "Does a Christian go immediately to heaven after death, or wait for the Second Coming?" Chapter 6 deals rather sensitively with that age-old question, "How can a loving God allow people to burn in hell?" Campolo points out--correctly, I think--that evangelicals often pay lip service to hell but question it privately. So does he, but I won't spoil it for you by telling his final position on that belief.

He goes astray in Chapter 9, where he asks "Is Islam an evil religion?" He acknowledges that Islamic radicals are a real threat today (well, duh) but goes back to the Koran and makes the point that Islam really is a religion of peace, as George W. famously said. This requires him to pretty much ignore more than a thousand years of intense violence, Muslim vs Muslim, and Muslim vs Christian. I think he also goes astray in claiming that evangelicals are too militaristic. Campolo is a Christian pacifist, a position I can respect even if I don't agree with. Having moved for years in evangelical circles (including publishing houses and colleges), I just don't find that many evangelicals being pro-war. I also find very few that adhere to the dispensational theology that he claims is such a threat to world peace. In the later chapters of the book, he comes across sounding not like a Christian scolding fellow Christians, but a hardline secularist who is in a tizzy, fearing those Horrible Radical Christians will lead the world to destruction. Funny, but I just haven't met any Christians like that. Campolo seems to think Muslims are more peace-loving than evangelicals--a truly doubtful proposition. He also contradicts himself in places: saying that evangelicals have become more "worldly" in the good sense of caring for the poor, yet elsewhere in the book says they ignore the poor. So which is it?

He can seem naive at times. In one section he talks about how he is tired of the religious Right's handwringing over the decline of sexual morals, and he cites "statistics" to prove that, quite the contrary, Americans are becoming more monogamous and faithful in their marriages. Oh, please. Has he not watched TV in the past ten years?

One disappointment: in this in-depth "warts and all" look at evangelicalism, he didn't address the serious issue of the many evangelicals who pay lip service to Christian ethics while going on their merry way. Hypocrisy is present in all religions, of course, but those of us who spend our working lives in the evangelical movement are painfully aware that the megachurches that preach conservative sexual morals and "family values" are home to lots of couples living together without marrying, engaging in gay relations, or just plain sleeping around.

All in all, there is more good here than bad. This is the kind of book you read to stimulate thought, not to find pat answers.

5 out of 5 stars A breath of fresh air!.......2006-10-25

This book is intelligent and honest. I appreciate his candor and his ability to communicate an idea with appropriate conviction. Sometimes bold and in your face, but softer when appropriate.

I agree with about 80% of his theology. I strongly disagree with his Universalist views regarding salvation, but he offers intelligent, respectable explainations for his beliefs.

We need more books like this to shake Evangelicals up a bit and remind us of who we serve, how we serve and why.

    Book Description

It’s no secret that what you don’t know can hurt you. In spite of that, we still go out of our way at times to avoid the truth. Men avoid doctors and women deny evidence of adultery. While the truth often hurts, deceiving ourselves will ultimately only worsen the situation. In this nine-part DVD and eight-part companion study guide, we listen in as Jesus introduces some rather perplexing truth to seven individuals who had grown comfortable with their misinformed lifestyles and belief systems. Readers will discover firsthand that the truth can set you free. And for those who have the courage to embrace it, their lives will be changed forever.

    Face the Truth

Life is full of defining moments. Like landmarks on a road map, these moments mark key points along your life’s journey. A defining moment happens when you come face-to-face with a truth that invites you to change the way you live. It demands that you make a decision. And regardless of the choice you make, you will never be the same.

In this eight-part companion study guide to the Defining Moments DVD, bestselling author Andy Stanley examines several such moments as depicted in the lives of people from Scripture—the kinds of moments many of us will experience in our lifetimes. And if you’re willing to look at truth honestly, these moments can change your life forever.

    Story Behind the Book

While working to develop a series that would introduce people to a new mind-set about the way they live their lives, Andy Stanley discovered the influence that defining moments have. Now, after teaching this principle to his staff, church, and through the extended home study groups of North Point Community Church , this DVD and study guide material are releasing to a national audience through North Point’s relationship with Multnomah.

    Book Description

Charles didn't know much about life ... until he met The Man Without a Face

"I'd never had a friend, and he was my friend; I'd never really, except for a shadowy memory, had a father, and he was my father. I'd never known an adult I could communicate with or trust, and I communicated with him all the time, whether I was actually talking to him or not. And I trusted him ......

Fourteen-year-old Charles desperately wants two things: a father and a way out. Little love has come his way until the summer he befriends a mysterious scarred man named Justin McLeod, nicknamed ""The Man Without a Face." Charles enlists McLeod's help as tutor for the St. Matthew's school entrance exams, his ticket away from the unpleasant restrictions of his home life. But more important than anything he could get out of a book, that summer Charles learns from McLeod a stirring life lesson about the many faces of love.

`Not much affection had come Charles's way until the summer he was fourteen, when he met McLeod [a man whose face was deeply scarred] and learned that love has many facets.' —BL. `A highly moral book, powerfully and sensitively written; a book that never loses sight of the human." —H.

This is a strong, poignant, well-written coming-of-age story about a boy with a troubled family life. It is also a tragedy of the Shakespearean variety: the story of a man who could have been great but who fell because of a tragic weakness.
The problem is the fall itself: clearly it concerns a sexual event between Charles (the boy) and McLeod (the man). The event could not have been explicitly described in a young adult novel - in fact, I am not happy about it even being hinted at, particularly in our times of greater awareness of sexual predation of the young - so the result is a very vague, fuzzy encounter, which is hardly satisfactory as the climax (no pun intended) of the book. There is a great scene in which Mcleod warns Charles not to make him a hero, because he would not be able to live up to that image; the trouble is, when he does fail, it doesn't seem to worry him terribly, and he doesn't even manage a sincere apology.
The novel thus falls into a gap somewhere between an appropriate bildungsroman and a shocking adult novel. There is some excellent characterisation and a sad but perhaps appropriate ending, but I won't be recommending it to my kids.

4 out of 5 stars The strength of the story outweighs the problems.......2006-05-25

I won't add to the previous reviewers' applause for Man Without A Face except to say that I found the sexualization of the relationship disturbing -- Nabokov joins NAMBLA. The intimations of homosexuality detract from the themes of trust and redemption. Still, an excellent read and well worth the time. Parents should be prepared to discuss the sexual implications with their children.

5 out of 5 stars The Man Without a Face.......2006-03-13

This book has been a favorite of mine every since I read it as a 12-year-old child. Unlike the movie, which I've just viewed, the book contains a right-to-the-heart, piercing, cornacopia of themes with love being the most important.

A story of a young boy who longs for a father long gone and lives with a mother who's hobby is to get married, an older sister who's job seems to be making his life as miserable as possible, and a younger half-sister who's just trying to find her role in their respective hierarchy combine to make a nearly true-to-life situation, real.

All Charles can think of is to pass the entrance exam to a boarding school and get on with his life away from his family. He meets a man, Justin MCleod, who's self-isolation intrigues Charles and the inhabitants of the local population. Speculation arises as to how Justin got the scaring on his face and the stories and rumors abound and hedge on unsavory topics.

Regardless of the speculation, Charles soon befriends Justin and their relationship blooms to more than that of a teacher and student--they have become friends.

This is a sensitive story of friendship and love. It reminded me of a teacher I once had. He was a good man and had a heart of gold. This is a book that will remain a favorite, always.

This book just keeps you reading; it is fun, dynamic and realistic with a hint of drama. Charles is easily identifiable with and is a colourful character. Curious about the man without a face? Start reading and be surprised!

My book that I read was very interesting. I would not recommend it for kids nine and under, because it would not be appropriate. This book tells you about Charles, his mean sister Gloria, their mother, and a lost father. Meg was Charles' other sister, who was quite helpful. Chuck tried to get intoSt.Matthew's, but failed a few times. This time he's was really going to have to pass it, but Chuck was never the academic type. So he was really going to need some help. Now, Charles needs to ask for help. He never liked to be helped. Then, Meg has to hook him up with someone. She knows that the man without a face, even though he really had half a face, was a tutor. A long time ago, the man without a face tutored a boy. They were, o sorry. Why don't you just read and find out.

5 out of 5 stars Fresh Perspectives From a Board Certified Dermatologist.......2007-08-27

As a board certified cosmetic dermatologist, Sundaram gives us some fresh perspectives not just on facial rejuvenation procedures and rational discusions about the right to be beautiful, but also insights into inner beauty as the secret to real outer beauty. I found her guided principles of living refreshing and unexpected for one whose life's work involves rejuvenating faces. Her Seven-Minute at-home skin care program was particularly helpful. I thought so highly of this book that I listed it as a 'Helpful Resource' at the end of my own book!

    5 out of 5 stars well done.......2006-02-23

Dr Sundaram's book is filled with understanding and obvious experience. She offers comprehensive solutions to skin problems and gives multiple alternatives to skin care that do not just sell her products - for example she offers an inexpensive alternative skin care plan to products that may be purchased with a dermatologist only. As someone with scarring/skin care issues, I felt she really puts herself in the patient's shoes. I highly recommend this book!

    5 out of 5 stars Face Value.......2003-09-01

Like it or not we live in a culture that celebrates youth and beauty; how you look can affect your ability to get a job, find a mate, or even to be taken seriously. Dr. Sundaram has made a significant contribution to those of us over 40 by dispelling the guilt that many of us feel when we consider cosmetic procedures. She also provides an honest and thorough evaluation of what we can expect from these procedures. Dr. Sundaram recognizes, however, that some of our insecurities come, not from how others view us, but from how we view ourselves. Her book, therefore, includes a positive program for learning to accept and appreciate who, what, and where we are.

    Book Description

The development of modern science, and its increasing impact on our lives and cultures, is one of the great stories of our time. So, understanding--and coming to terms with--the institution of modern science should be an integral part of education. In The Many Faces of Science, Leslie Stevenson and Henry Byerly masterfully, and painlessly, provide the basic information and the philosophical reflection students need to gain such understanding. The authors make good use of case study methods, and they introduce us to dozens of figures from the history of science. Stevenson and Byerly provide an elementary sketch of the development of science through the lives of its practitioners, and they examine the often mixed motives of scientists, as well as the conflicting values people bring to science--and to their perceptions of its impact on society. The authors also explore the relationship between scientific practice and political and economic power.

Accessible and rich with anecdotes, personal asides, and keen insight, The Many Faces of Science is the ideal interdisciplinary introduction for nonscientists in courses on science studies, science and society, and science and human values. It will also prove useful as supplementary reading in courses on science and philosophy, sociology, and political science. In this second edition of The Many Faces of Science, the authors have updated topics that they explore in the first edition, and they present new case studies on subjects such as HIV and AIDS, women in science, and work done in psychology and the social sciences. The authors also extend their discussion of science and values, in addition to revising their study of science and technology to emphasize changes in scientific practice today.

    Praise for the previous edition:

4 out of 5 stars Reasonable Text for Non-Majors Science Course.......2004-02-26

I have used this book and the previous edition for about five years for a one-semester course for non-majprs. I have emphasized both the history and values aspects of the case studies. I find that a case study approach works well for business, social sciences, and education majors. I also supplement this book with videos that discuss the Wright Brothers and powered flight, the Manhattan Project, and Andrew Wiles proof of Fermat's Last Theorem, etc. I don't always agree with some of the negative perspectives of science and scientists expressed by the authors but try to let the student decide how to interpret the various cases covered in this book.

5 out of 5 stars A must read book for any young scientist.......1999-04-06

a great book with lots of examples from history.Giving enough perspective to understand why human does science.

The Many Faces of Virtue, a collection of short essays on the virtues, shows that moral excellence is not a thing of the past-it is alive, radical, modern, and essential. Drawing upon a rich store of anecdotes, Canadian philosopher and biothicist Donald DeMarco describes each virtue in a charmingly simple, down-to-earth manner.

    4 out of 5 stars A Fulfilling Experience.......2001-01-25

You know when you walk down the street and somebody says hello to you? It makes you feel good inside. A simple gesture of courtesy to our fellow human beings can completely change the pace of our day. We often feel alone and abused because everyone is so competitive, out for themselves. They will stop at nothing to get what they want, and that includes using vice.

Now relax for a second, take a deep breath, and think of how that hello made you feel. That act of courtesy is a virtue, and there are 47 more of them suppressed inside us. Unfortunately the popularity of media as a tool in modern society often distorts our views on the world. For example, movies and television attempt to glorify vices and all that is evil, and has skillfully downplayed virtues as boring and irrelevent in a modern society. Enter "The Many Faces of Virtue" by philosopher Donald Demarco which integrates theology, modern day examples, and the importance of virtue into an easily accessible book that does not require a doctorate degree to understand.

This is a uniquely crafted book on virtues to which we should practice everyday for fullfillment in life. The book is divided into four sections: The personal virtues, interpersonal virtues, social virtues, and sacred virtues. The book makes a lot of references to religion to demonstrate the importance and positivity of virtue over vice. I am not by any means a religious person, I have never attended church. From this point of view than, I am qualified to state that religious or not...this book has plenty of persuasion into leading a virtuous life through inspirational and real stories. There are 48 virtues presented.

The first section is personal virtues (including patience, determination, integrity, innocence) which establish a sense of self. For example, Dr. Demarco emphasizes determination with riveting and moving stories of heroes such as runner Wilma Rudolph who had loss use of her leg, and through determination she ended up meeting with great success in the Olympic games. Demarco stresses the truth that the best stories are the ones where people overcame hardships through determination, and offer hope to the rest of us.

This is the consistent trend in "The Many Faces of Virtues" as evident with the stark observation made by Demarco regarding machines and humans. One particular day his card would not work in a gas pump, and he was told to treat the machine delicate by a gas clerk in the store. He then saw a Jerry Springer tape, which depicts people doing awful harm to one another (as found in the interpersonal virtue of courtesy).

The everyday examples are what give the book such integrity because they are adaptible to the masses. Each virtue is brief and to the point following a logical sequence.

The misconceptions of virtues are cleared up in this book. Upon reading it, there will be no doubt that a virtuous life is far more beneficial and fulfilling to yourself and others. Religious or not, this book should not be overlooked.

      Book Description

Integrity is "a firm adherence to a code of moral values...the quality or state of being complete or undivided." If we have integrity, our heart is not divided. In his study on the book of James, David Jeremiah shows readers that a life lived with focused devotion to God should make a genuine difference in the way a person lives. One's creed should determine his conduct. This book will help readers tap into God's supernatural strength to meet the challenges of their lives. It is for those who want God's wisdom and who intend to walk the rough road to Christian maturity. For James, the proof of professions was in the living. It still is.
