Trouble is brewing in Baker, Washington. Three popular athletes have been stricken with a mysterious ailment--or phenomenon--that leaves them ranting incoherently, paranoid, and eventually comatose. Ever ready to seek truth and justice, teen twins Elisha and Elijah and their parents hop in their van, the Holy Roller, and head to Washington. As members of a top-secret presidential investigative team, the Veritas Project, the family must be prepared to go undercover at any moment. Soon they are deeply embroiled in a deadly mystery that involves witchcraft, bullying, the ghost of a boy who hanged himself long ago, and a most diabolical weapon.

Frank Peretti, well known for his Christian thrillers (This Present Darkness/Piercing the Darkness, The Visitation, etc.) draws from his own experiences of not fitting in as a child to create this alarming tale of vengeance. The twins and their parents occasionally turn to their faith for guidance, but the crux of the story lies in the danger that comes from treating less cool kids like second-class citizens. References to the tragedy at Columbine remind readers just how painfully real the problem is. Peretti seems to use the twins' father as a voice for his own viewpoint: "Metal detectors may keep weapons out of the schools, and security officers can maintain at least a surface tranquility, but these will not keep out the pain, anger, and loneliness that cause a child to bring a weapon to school in the first place." (Ages 13 and older) --Emilie Coulter

5 out of 5 stars Peretti did it again!.......2007-07-12

There is a reason WHY Peretti is one of our best authors! The book was REALLY GOOD! Not for kids, but teens and adults will LOVE this book!

5 out of 5 stars The Hangmans Curse.......2007-04-04

Something has gone horribly wrong at Baker High School and teenagers are hallucinating and going crazy. This is where the curse comes in. The Hangmans Curse is a thrilling novel that keeps you on the edge of your seat and shocks you with the intense storyline. The book is recommended for teenagers and I believe that it is a great book for all young s. The book is hard to put down and leaves you perplexed until the last words. The author was bullied as a child and knows firsthand what can push people over the edge, and this novel was a great reflection of this. the vook uses quotes at the bottom of certain pages to catch the readers attention and builds suspense with each growing page. It is almost as if you were in the book. The book is fairly easy to read, and will leave you saying, "I never would have guessed that. Through and through this book is an outstanding novel for any teenager.

5 out of 5 stars Hangman's Curse.......2006-06-01

I thought the book Hangman's Curse was amazing! It was a "keep-you-on-the-edge-of-your-seat" type of book. Just when you thought you knew what was going on, who did it, the book totally flipped. The book had a real good moral, too. That you should treat people all the same. Nobody likes to be teased and this book was an example of someone's attempt to eliminate the teasers, permanantly. The book kinda left you with a sense of all the "pieces of the puzzle" fitting back into place. Overall, I thought this book was very good and a must read.

5 out of 5 stars Good tale. .......2006-03-12

Frank Peretti is a master story-teller....He has never failed to please young and old. Everyone from my 9 yr old grandson,my 19 yr son......and yes ,even this 57 yr old mother loves to read Perreti. This one did not disappoint.......and I think it is never too early to stress to young people that "Bullying " of any kind is unacceptable. It is time that adults stop turning a blind eye to it. Get the book ...read it ....you will be impressed.

4 out of 5 stars Frank Peretti.......2006-03-11

Frank Peretti is a pretty good author. I love this book, the Hangman's Curse--and I own two copies of it (one being the movie version and one being the version listed here). I also like the book Nightmare Academy, which I have read three times and own. Frank Peretti is a wonderful author mostly because of his mysterious plots and wonderful writing.

3 out of 5 stars Victorian Serial Killer on the loose.......2007-07-20

It took me three tries to get into this book, but once I got hooked I stayed up late and got up early to finish it. The murder mystery is unpredictable with several convincing red herrings thrown in to pull you off track. In the end, the motive behind the killer's actions are alluded to, but not strongly supported by the storyline. This made the ending slightly unsatisfying. However, the Victorian era's customs and manners is presented with picture-painting detail and seemed believable.

Anne Perry uses a very interesting literary device: we can hear the thoughts of only female characters (not all of them, but we never see inside a male character's mind). This helped to focus (or even exagerate?) the emotional and social distance between the male and female characters. Enjoy the book and the character of Charlotte as she changes over the course of the series.

5 out of 5 stars A great beginning!.......2007-07-03

For anyone who loves series of mysteries, this is a great beginning! I can't wait to read the rest!

3 out of 5 stars Good, Not Great!.......2007-05-14

When I learned that there was a series of Victorian era murder/mysteries I became excited since I was bored with the usual historical romances. Ah, thought I, now for some excitement. In the Cater Street Hangman, the first of this series, the plot is good as mysteries go with any number of red herrings thrown in. The final denouement is a surprise (at least it was to me). However, the characters all seem a bit shallow and story movement is slow. At the outset I thought this would be one of those books where I read the first couple of chapters and set it aside. Not so. After a slow start, the story does indeed pick up with bits and pieces of the puzzle being revealed slowly.

For this reader, however, there are many unanswered questions about dangling story lines. Hopefully, they will be answered in the next book in the series. I've given this book 3 stars based on the originality of the plot.

4 out of 5 stars Fantastic!.......2007-05-14

This was the first book I have read by Anne Perry and it definitely makes me beg for more. She brings this Victorian era to life and the characters just jump off the page. I truly felt the feeling of female repression, along with the underlying fear that another young girl will be murdered. While I've never been a fan of mystery, I couldn't help wondering who it could be. The ending was wonderfully suspenseful - and I would have never guessed the murderer in a million years. Brilliant book.

1 out of 5 stars Limited characterisation and doubtful historical accuracy.......2006-09-09

I had been recommended to read Anne Perry, and told by someone that the first book was one of the best, and was very disappointed by what I discovered. It's one of those books with much "telling" of what characters are feeling and how they are developing rather than "showing" those feelings and developments. It is written in an anachronistic style, doesn't have the true ring of the Victorian era at all. (I am comparing to books written in that era - Dickens, Thackeray, Conan Doyle). The author also does one of my least favourite things, which is to forget key information. (spoiler alert) Inspector Pitt is the one who tells the family the name of Edward's mistress, and they later spend much time and effort trying to hide that fact from him. How amateur.

After reading other glowing reviews of the book - "it all seems immediate and alive", her excellent knowledge of upperclass Victorian England life, "excellent characterisation" - I am left wondering whether maybe I read a different book from everyone else. Perhaps the later books in the series will improve.

      Book Description

This volume offers bracing new translations of two precursors to the modern detective novel by Friedrich Dürrenmatt, whose genre-bending mysteries recall the work of Alain Robbe-Grillet and anticipate the postmodern fictions of Paul Auster and other contemporary neo-noir novelists. Both mysteries follow Inspector Barlach as he moves through worlds in which the distinction between crime and justice seems to have vanished. In The Judge and His Hangman, Barlach forgoes the arrest of a murderer in order to manipulate him into killing another, more elusive criminal. And in Suspicion, Barlach pursues a former Nazi doctor by checking into his clinic with the hope of forcing him to reveal himself. The result is two thrillers that bring existential philosophy and the detective genre into dazzling convergence.

I love the whole series! I love the characters, the plots, the herbal references! Quick fun reading- a real page turner!

      4 out of 5 stars A solid third helping.........2004-10-10

Susan Wittig Albert's third mystery of the China Bayles series, "Hangman's Root", is a solid mystery, with a surprising killer, and a murder victim with a history of doing horrible, sadistic things to people and animals. China's friend, Dottie Riddle, a biology professor and a "cat lady" is the prime suspect in the murder of the sadistic Dr. Harwick, a colleague. Soon China finds that extortion, embezzlement, and deep hatred figure into this killing. Meanwhile, China and Mike are trying to find a house that they could both move into, with some comic results, and Rudy is trying to deal with a reunion with the daughter she gave up years ago. Not quite as good as "Witches Bane", but the sotry introduces us to some intriguing new characters.

4 out of 5 stars Texas Hill Country mystery.......2004-06-07

China Bayles becomes disillusioned with her career as an attorney so she moves to the small town of Pecan Springs in the Texas Hill Country and opens an herb shop. In this third book of the series, China's good friend, Dottie Riddle, a biology professor at the university in Pecan Springs, is being accused of murdering one of the other faculty members, Miles Harwick. Harwick's animal experiments have galvanized opposition from animal rights groups, but Dottie has personal as well as professional problems with Harwick. A piece of physical evidence is all it takes for Dottie to be arrested. As China does some investigating, she discovers that other people have a motive to murder Harwick as well. Just as she thinks that she has the mystery solved, yet another possible suspect appears on the scene. The setting of the Texas Hill Country is a great place for a mystery and the characters surrounding China, especially her boyfriend Mike McQuaid just add to the fun.

3 out of 5 stars So So China Bayles mystery.......2002-02-22

China is considering moving in with McQuaid, stressful enough, and then her friend, known as the cat lady is accused of the murder of a fellow professor. The professor has alot of skeletons in his closet, everything from abusing animals to children, but who killed him?

This is a pretty good mystery, but others of the series are much better.

3 out of 5 stars China Bayles - amateur slueth.......2001-07-11

As much as I enjoy this series, I feel like something is lacking, I just can't figure out what it is. I like the closeness of the characters, but have a hard time looking at them realistically. China is off on another investigation, this time trying to free her friend and animal rights activist, Dr. Riddle, from a murder charge. China owns an herb shop, but can always seem to find someone to 'mind the store' anytime of day whenever she needs to go nosing around on a case. This is the third in the series, and I'm not seeing any character development at all. The storylines are fun and good for a quick read, and I'm hoping the author will bring China out of her shell a little bit in future books and make her more enthusiastic toward her relationship with McQuaid.

        Book Description

The central question for both the victors and the vanquished of World War II was just how widely the stain of guilt would spread over Germany. Political leaders and intellectuals on both sides of the conflict debated whether support for National Socialism tainted Germany's entire population and thus discredited the nation's history and culture. The tremendous challenge that Allied officials and German thinkers faced as the war closed, then, was how to limn a postwar German identity that accounted for National Socialism without irrevocably damning the idea and character of Germany as a whole.

In the House of the Hangman chronicles this delicate process, exploring key debates about the Nazi past and German future during the later years of World War II and its aftermath. What did British and American leaders think had given rise to National Socialism, and how did these beliefs shape their intentions for occupation? What rhetorical and symbolic tools did Germans develop for handling the insidious legacy of Nazism? Considering these and other questions, Jeffrey K. Olick explores the processes of accommodation and rejection that Allied plans for a new German state inspired among the German intelligentsia. He also examines heated struggles over the value of Germany's institutional and political heritage. Along the way, he demonstrates how the moral and political vocabulary for coming to terms with National Socialism in Germany has been of enduring significance—as a crucible not only of German identity but also of contemporary thinking about memory and social justice more generally.

Given the current war in Iraq, the issues contested during Germany's abjection and reinvention—how to treat a defeated enemy, how to place episodes within wider historical trajectories, how to distinguish varieties of victimhood—are as urgent today as they were sixty years ago, and In the House of the Hangman offers readers an invaluable historical perspective on these critical questions.

5 out of 5 stars The Year of the Hangman.......2007-03-30

Unable to cope with its numerous hardships, the American rebellion has been crushed by the British. Young Creighton Brown has just arrived from England to the thirteen colonies. As his ship, the Amnity sails through the Gulf of Mexico, it becomes captured by an American ship. The door to Creighton's cabin is broken open, and a giant and another man, who is actually Benedict Arnold, walks inside. The next thing he knows, Creighton is in New Orleans, the rebel stronghold, as the colonies are too dangerous for rebel activity. When the giant, whose name is Peter, brings Creighton to the home of Dr. Benjamin Franklin, he is astounded by his presence. However, when he soon encounters the British colonel who was on board the Amnity, he is assigned to expose Franklin's secrets so that the British can find out their plans to liberate George Washington, who is awaiting the gallows. As the novel progresses, Creighton begins to lose his hatred towards the Americans, especially after British loyalists burn Ben Franklin's printing shop, killing him. Soon, though, when he travels to Pensacola, he reencounters his British companions aboard the Amnity. Now aware of how corrupt the British are, he sides with the American rebels, and finds the prison where George Washington is located. Instead, it's Creighton's father, and George Washington has already been hung. Off into the moonlight, Creighton finds new hope and a new destiny, for he's not a simple boy anymore. The Year of the Hangman is an exciting novel written by Gary Blackwood for its suspense, its alternative history, and for the description of a young boy growing up.

When the Amnity pulls into the Gulf of Mexico, it is simply another peaceful and serene day. However, as the approaching ship is seen in the horizon, an eerie calm takes shape right before a major point of conflict. Enough to scare most readers out of their seats, this is a great scene of peril. Also, there is a passage that describes Creighton's journey to rescue George Washington. Loaded with massive amounts of suspense, it is for nothing, as he is already dead.

In 1776, all odds were against the American militia. After the harsh winters in Valley Forge and the brutal, savage battles, somehow, we triumphed over the redcoats. However, luck and only luck was on our side, and Great Britain could have been just as likely to overcome. The Year of the Hangman is an alternate-reality that tells what could have happened during the Revolutionary War, and why we are so lucky that the United States exists today.

Young Creighton Brown never had much of a father figure when he was young; he was always engrossed in business in the colonies. In New Orleans, Creighton is shocked that he has met Benjamin Franklin. As he works in Franklin's print shop, Creighton begins to develop an understanding for life and deeply matures in the process. When his father asks him if he is playing another one of his games, Creighton replies, "I'm not playing a game. Not anymore."

The Year of the Hangman, written by Gary Blackwood is a spectacular novel due to its constant thrills, its dramatic descriptions of a parallel universe, and also because it tells a life story. What could have happened if the Americans lost the war? Most importantly, this novel is recommended because it combines the elements to create a spectacular piece of work. Overall, it deeply moved me at the same time it thrilled me as well. It is also very concise and detailed, telling the point of view of the author. I rate this novel a rating of five stars out of five.

Have you ever wondered what life would be like if the British won the war? Well if you read the Year of the Hangman by Gary Blackwood you might get a better idea. The Year of the Hangman is a story about Creighton who was sent from England to the colonies by his mom. At first he hated everything about it and wanted to go home but when he meets some patriots like Benjamin Franklin he gets very confused on where he stands. So if you're a person who likes history or realistic fiction books you will love the Year of the Hangman.

This revolutionary story takes place back in 1777, war times. Creighton Brown is a noble boy trying to find his way in the world. With his father killed in battle, and just his mother to look after him, Creighton finds himself getting into more trouble than he ever imagined.

One night, coming home from a good time of gambling, Creighton finds himself being gagged and carried away to a ship bound for the America's. What's more, he found that his mother had arranged the whole thing! The only friend Creighton makes is that of Lieutenant Hale, a card player just like Creighton.

Creighton finds that he is to live with his harsh uncle, Colonel Gower. But when his uncle is promoted to serve in Florida, Creighton becomes even more upset.

On the ship called the Amity Creighton not only experiences life at sea, but privateers. Creighton escapes his uncle's wrath, only to be found under the command of General Benedict Arnold himself!

On his way to New Orleans, (without any choice in the matter) Creighton finds it harder and harder to stay loyal to his jolly old England, for he makes many new American friends like Peter and Sophie.

Peter is a big man with an even bigger heart. He might not be the brightest star in the sky, but you will love him all the same.

Sophie is servant of Benjamin Franklin, and works in the printing shop. Girls will find it hard not to love this French girl with attitude. But does Creighton have the heart to betray them all? Find out

I LOVE this book and I'm not a teacher NOR do I have children (just lots of nieces and nephews)! I've always been a board game fan and this book brings back memories of all the fun we used to have as kids. This is a great book for parents to get kids away from video games and get outside and have fun while being active. It covers almost any children's game you can think of in a manner that touches on all the detail I've forgotten over time. It's divided into chapters such as: Indoor Games; Games to Play on Grass and Playgrounds; Games to play on Pavement, Steps and Stoops; Games in Water; Party Games and Travel Games.

There are games I played that I didn't remember the names or the rules...they're all here. Card games like Old Maid, Fish and Hearts; Paper games like Hangman, Boxes (where you make the dots and connect the lines to form boxes) and String games like Cat's Cradle. There was even the game that you folded the paper and wrote stuff on the inside and you sliped the paper box thing over your fingers to answer the other person's questions. Here it's called Cootie Catcher but I can guarantee we didn't call it that! LOL

Writing this review makes me want to go play some hopscotch! See ya' later.

The best one book for playing games with elementary students. New games, old games, cooperative games, competitive games, variations on games- it's all here. The best money I've spent on a game book- and I've bought four!

I couldn't put this book down -- it's like reading a best seller! It brought back wonderful memories of my childhood. Games I always wanted to share with my kids, but couldn't remember exactly how to play them are not a problem now. I'm also a new Girl Scout leader (starting my 2nd year) and I know, already, this book will provide hours of fun. **One of the best reference books for entertaining children (and adults) I've come across.

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive Game BOOK!.......1999-05-16

I love this book! I have used it so much I had to order a second copy. As a teacher, I have used many of these games to play with my class during recess, on school trips, and after a lesson is finished. The book is easy to use for any age or interest level. These are the games I remember playing as a kid. I highly recommend you buy it!

        Book Description

With the entry of France on the American side, the War for Independence moved from a regional conflict to a global war. To offset this new alliance, Britain devised a bold new strategy. Turning its attention to the colonial frontiers, especially those of western New York, Pennsylvania, and Virginia, Britain enlisted its Provincial Rangers, Tories, and allied warriors, principally from the Iroquois Confederacy, to wage a brutal backwoods war in an attempt to cut the colonies in half, divert the Continental Army, and weaken its presence around British-occupied New York City and Philadelphia.

Moving quickly, British forces under the direction of Colonel John Butler and the charismatic Mohawk leader, Joseph Brant, unleashed a terror campaign, but following massacres at the well-established colonial settlements of Wyoming, Pennsylvania, and Cherry Valley, New York, the Continental Congress persuaded General George Washington to conduct a decisive offensive to end the threat once and for all. Brewing since 1777, the "Year of the Hangman," the conflict between the Iroquois and colonists would now reach its deadly climax.

Charging his troops "to not merely overrun, but destroy," Washington devised a two-prong attack to exact American revenge. The largest coordinated American military action against Native Americans in the war, the campaign shifted the balance of power in the east, ending the political and military influence of the Iroquois, forcing large numbers of loyalists to flee to Canada, and sealing Britain's fateful decision to seek victory in the south. In Year of the Hangman: George Washington's Campaign Against the Iroquois, historian Glenn F. Williams recreates the riveting events surrounding the action, including the checkered story of European and Indian alliances, the bitter frontier wars, and the bloody battles of Oriskany and Saratoga, in order to tell the tale of the campaign that changed the outcome of the American Revolution.

5 out of 5 stars Well Researched and Written Book about the Indian Wars during the American Revolution.......2007-07-21

This is a well researched and written book about the Indian wars on the New York and Pennsylvania frontiers during the American Revolution. It tells the stories of the Wyoming Massacre, the Cherry Valley Massacre and the Sullivan campaign providing the details on each but in a very readable format. It also provides some details on other not so well known events on the frontiers like the situation around Pittsburgh and in western Pennsylvania. Consequently, this book fills in a gap in the American Revolution and worth the purchase for any individual interested in reading more about that period.

5 out of 5 stars Choose Your Alliances Wisely!.......2006-12-10

After two years of fighting in America with limited success, the British felt they were, to coin a popularized modern term, in a bit of a quagmire, and sought a new strategy for their overseas war. The new strategy involved moving the war away from the more populated northeast and into the western frontier. This move would not only disperse the already diminutive American forces, but would also allow Britain to utilize its strongest North American allied force, the Iroquois Indian Confederacy.

Glenn William's book, THE YEAR OF THE HANGMAN: WASHINGTON'S WAR AGAINST THE IROQUOIS chronicles the events that took place in those western frontier skirmishes and battles. The book derives its name for the year, 1777, which had become popularly known at the time as the `year of the hangman' due to the three sevens appearance of gallows when written, though the majority of the events actually occurred in 1779. Though using that title for his book was too good of an opportunity to pass up, William's title is slightly misleading as to the dates of the primary events.

The Iroquois, though primarily located in Western and Central New York, were quite possibly the strongest Indian nation of North America for a span of over 500 years. Their control reached across the Great Lakes into Central Wisconsin and their rise to prominence came at the cost of driving out, and driving to extinction, numerous other Indian tribes of the region. They were, to be sure, a force to be reckoned with.

Both the Americans and the British had heavily lobbied allegiance with the Iroquois, but in the end, the Indians felt their best chance for future lay at the hands of the British and consequently, four of the six main tribes of the Iroquois sided with the British. This error in judgment would prove fatal to the Iroquois nation, when, as a primary result of the Sullivan Expedition, the Iroquois nation would virtually lose all of its military and political power.

While the Sullivan Expedition is the primary focus of William's book, other major events are deftly chronicled as well, such as the Battle of Oriskany and the Wyoming Valley attacks. By 1979, Gen. Washington had successfully developed the army making it capable of taking the fight to the Indians and literally destroying their economical stability and rendering them harmless, not just for the remainder of the revolution, but into the subsequent years of frontier settlement into the traditional Iroquois homelands.

That Washington was able to develop a force the size of the Sullivan Expedition (5000 men) is in and of itself, a testament to Washington's military leadership abilities and, though today, only an afterthought in Revolutionary history, stands as one of the General's greatest military accomplishments.

This is good reading. Glenn William's had put together a readable and valuable presentation of a rather forgotten aspect of America's fight for independence.

5 out of 5 stars Dave Dyer, Houston, TX.......2006-10-20

I read this book because I have Loyalist ancestors who were members of Butler's Rangers and almost certainly participated in the battles described in such detail. My ancestors, William Pickard and his 2 sons James and Benjamin, two privates and a drummer boy, did not get mentioned in the book, but that was not a problem since around 900 people were in Butler's Rangers. They survived to move to Canada after the war and they started large families after leaving their homes in Tryon County.

The book has a nice section on the key personalities that I found useful since there were Butlers on both the Loyalist and Patriot sides. The book would be improved by detailed maps. Unless you can imagine where places like Tioga, Unidilla and Stone Arabia are, you will read the book in front of your computer with Google Maps open as I did. The book would also be improved with contemporary photos of the battle sites; some of these, like the Battle of Newton, were easily found on the web.

I learned much from the book and enjoyed it. It was very interesting to see that the Rangers contained a good number of Black soldiers who lived with the rest of the Rangers and the Indians. It was also interesting to see how both sides courted the Indians and tried to win their support. The book really makes the Revolution look much more like a civil war than people typically think.

        5 out of 5 stars Unexpected Gem.......2006-07-01

The book was well written to the point that the book rich in detail was not lost by the tremendous amout of utilized quotes and reference points. More detail on the life style and pressures (for survival)of settlements along the frontier border would have been benefical.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent History of a Little Known Campaign.......2006-02-09

Glenn Williams has written a detailed and informative history of a little known but important Revolutionary War campaign. The North American frontier or "backcountry" of northern Pennsylania and New York, from the Mohawk to the Genesee Valley, was the site of intense conflict between Britain's Iroquois allies and American "rebel" farmers. From 1777 on the British sought to terrorize the Pennsylvania and New York backcountry through brutal and horrific Indian attacks against colonial militia and their families. By 1779 the new American government realized a forceful counterattack was imperative to stop this British-inspired terror campaign. The result was a masterful military campaign orchastrated by George Washington and led by Major General John Sullivan. Sullivan's well trained and well disciplined army of 3,000 colonial troops swept up from northern Pennsylania through the Genesee Valley (near present day Geneseo, New York) wrecking near complete destruction on Indian villages and crops. The campaign was a major success, breaking the fighting spirit of the Iroquois - notably the Seneca - and paving the way for the eventual victory of the Americans against the British. This engaging story is told well by Williams. His story would have been easier to follow, however, with more and better maps.

Widowed Inspector Peter Diamond is being pursued by a secret admirer as he pursues a serial killer. Delia Williamson, a mother of two young girls who works as a waitress, is first reported missing by her own mother. She is found in a public park, hanged from the crossbar of a children's swing set. There seems to be no reason for her to have committed suicide, and the postmortem reveals that she was murdered. Her present partner, her ex-husband, and a traveling salesman who dined at her table in the restaurant where she worked, are all suspects. Then her former husband is found in a cave, also hanged. A remorse suicide? Diamond doesn't think so. When a well-to-do couple is found dead, both hanged, a suicide pact is suggested. Diamond is dubious; too many couples are dying by the same method. Before he can figure out what is going on, one more person will die.

Peter Lovesey has been honored with the British Crime Writers' Association Diamond Dagger for Lifetime Achievement, as well as with American prizes, such as the Edgar Award. He is an acknowledged master of the mystery form. This is his tenth Peter Diamond mystery set in Bath, England.

4 out of 5 stars Welcome Back Peter Diamond.......2007-10-08

It's been awhile since we had a new Peter Diamond mystery, and I've been anxiously waiting. I love Diamond so much since he's such an everyday man. Lovesey's creation is just so real. In this book Diamond finds himself the object of an unknown woman's desire. He is still reeling from the death of his beloved wife Stephanie, and doesn't think he's ready for anything else. And then people start showing up all over Bath. They are couples that appear to be murder-suicides with the man killing himself after the wife is dead. Diamond doesn't like coincidences, and knows there is more to these deaths. Diamond has a job trying to stop this killer. I'm so glad that Lovesey is not finished with Diamond yet.

        3 out of 5 stars Diamond Lives.......2007-08-31

A definite page turner, could easily be a movie script. Peter Diamond, devestated by the tragic loss of his wife, comes to life again with a new squeeze, and manages to identify the culprit in a crime that has the lovely old city of Bath in turmoil.

4 out of 5 stars Pressure makes diamonds........2007-08-11

Following earlier developments in DI Peter Diamond's life and career it was hard to imagine what would follow. This latest Lovesey gem does a bang up job as Diamond navigates the varying clues that lead to a suprising if somewhat too neat conclusion. Diamond remains an appealing if difficult character with human flaws and strengths. The intertwining of personal and professional makes for a compelling read. As each avenue closes another opens and keeps leading Diamond back to place he doesn't want to be, or does he? More development of secondary characters and relationship would have improved this one - but couldn't put it down once I started. Good read and will be looking for more. Would love to see Diamond paired up with Dangerous.

4 out of 5 stars Peter Diamond and the New Love Interest.......2007-08-01

Recovering from the murder of his beloved wife three earlier, gruff Inspector Peter Diamond is slowly starting to emerge from his cocoon of grief. He has a secret admirer, a new relationship, and a murder to investigate -- a series of hangings that first appear to be murder-suicide, but proves to something more evil.

It always feels like a long time between Peter Diamond novels most probably because it is. No matter how long though, it always feels like revisiting an old friend. Peter Diamond is not the most lovable or most tactful fictional detective but he is one of the most real. He's not superhuman or even brilliant most of time. Luck plays a big part in his cases, but nonetheless he gets the job done. THE SECRET HANGMAN is another engaging entry in a very solid series from Peter Lovesey.

4 out of 5 stars Diamond contends with love and murder.......2007-06-27

Gruff, sharp and very much in charge, Bath Detective Superintendent Peter Diamond, still mourning the murder of his wife, Stephie, contends with a secret admirer as well as a murderer in this ninth outing.

The story opens with an anonymous letter from a reasonable and cultured sounding woman who Diamond decides to ignore. When a woman is found hanging in a public park his solicitous underlings offer to spare him the trauma (he discovered his wife's body in a park), but Diamond deals with that in summary fashion.

The victim was murdered then strung up to look like a suicide. When her husband is found hanging from a bridge a few days later Diamond suspects murder though his superiors prefer a neat murder-suicide solution.

Meanwhile, Diamond has met a woman, a charming lady who, it will surprise no one, is his spurned secret admirer. Diamond feels used when Paloma gets around to admitting this, but he gets over it. Meanwhile, he has found a pattern in the hanging case - two very similar cases, with nothing to connect them but the method.

While as witty and sharp as ever, this is not the strongest in the Diamond series. There are a couple plot holes big enough to drive a truck through and the tension with his boss, Georgina, while clever, sometimes seems unnecessary. Still, Diamond is always entertaining and Lovesey remains a cut above most.
