Book Description

No one knows the story behind the sensational headlines of the Scott Peterson murder trial better than defense attorney Matt Dalton. For six straight months after Peterson's arrest, Dalton was the defense's only full-time investigative attorney on the case. During that time, he lived in Modesto and investigated every element of the case, interviewing scores of witnesses, reviewing more than 35,000 pages of police documents, and meeting almost daily with Scott Peterson in jail.

What he has uncovered will astound even the most informed observers of the Laci Peterson murder case and challenge the most deeply held beliefs about what really happened to Laci Peterson on Christmas Eve, 2002.

This is the first book to go inside the Peterson defense team, and the only book to detail all the evidence that the jury did not hear -- evidence that might have led to Scott Peterson's acquittal, and that will surely play a crucial part in his pending appeals.

Among the revelations in Presumed Guilty:

Compelling, provocative, disturbing, Presumed Guilty is the fascinating story of one lawyer's relentless efforts to find the truth behind one of the most complex and notorious murder cases in American history.

2 out of 5 stars Biased opinion.......2007-10-07

I got a copy of this book at my local Dollar Tree for $1. That said, it was worth the price.

The author is certainly biased in his account about the defense's evidence that was suppressed in the Peterson trial. What about the suppression of evidence from the prosecution? There are ALOT of defense leads (satanic cult, screaming from the bathroom, witnesses that saw Laci) that were not followed up on. WHY? Did the Modesto police really want a repeat of the Chandra Levy case on their hands? If these leads were so good, why didn't the Modesto police follow up? Or did they? Since they didn't/couldn't convict Condit in the Levi case, you expect me to believe they wanted to prosecute Peterson in the worst way?

It seems to me that this attorney wasn't tenacious enough with his leads. The book insinuates that the Modesto police didn't follow leads, and the author didn't get along with Gerogos. BFD. The author was cut off from the case after 6 months. Why is that? If he was any good, they would have kept him on.

Very very one sided look at this trial.

2 out of 5 stars Interesting...BUT.......2007-02-15

Not very convincing. It is very hard to buy the fact that an innocent Scott Peterson would have allowed his defense to ignore so many facts, if indeed they are facts; i.e. the 6 eyewitnesses, the scream, the brown van, the other pregnant women who vanished...
This book is mainly about accusing the Modesto police of misconduct. If the allegations here ARE true-then of course, it is horrifying and scary, as any one of us could be convicted if we have the misfortune of losing a spouse to murder...
Also, if true, I have to trust the Supreme Court will ultimately grant a new trial. But this book does not show any facts that stand out-why aren't those witnesses available and screaming aloud still?

4 out of 5 stars Our FRIGHTENING justice system.......2007-02-12

I'm not sure I like the writing style of the author, but overall it's a good book. I gave it 4 stars because I'm so grateful that Matt Dalton wrote it. Our justice system is frightening when someone is tried and convicted in the media long before he was even arrested. It's frightening how credible leads were ignored. It's frightening that Scott was convicted and put on death row with no evidence. This book goes into all of that.

In my personal opinion, the trial was a joke.. Amber Fry and her mistress press conference as the "motive" who offered nothing as far Scott being guilty of murder.. the Rocha family and their news conferences implicating Scott long before he was arrested. I think it all contributed to Scott being convicted in the media long before his arrest, and I think it contributed to ignoring the credible leads and evidence discussed in Matt Dalton's book.

5 stars to Matt Dalton for writing this book.

4 out of 5 stars Though not particularily well written, the information presented is interesting..........2007-01-18

...as well as interesting to see some of the thought processes (or lack thereof) of the defense team. Although I doubt any of the information presented here would change anyone's mind....I've found there's not a lot of 'free thinking' allowed in regards to this case. I still wish someone would write a book providing insight on why the public latched onto the case, and so vehemently believe in Peterson's guilt and hate him with such venom, as if they were 'attached' to the victims in some way.

The thoughts and ideas Dalton brings out, are some of the same ones I had during the investigation and trial. There are still many things the defense did, or didn't do, that baffles me. Chief among this is why they didn't attack the timeframe of the robbery? Dalton seems perplexed as well.

I didn't particularily believe the 'devil worshiper' theory, but after reading the book, I wonder why, if it's that prevelant in the Modesto area, it wasn't looked in to further.

As for the negative reveiws here....I think it's more of the emotion I mentioned above. Very few 'observers' seem to be able to think rationally about this case. IE - anything the defense says bad, anything the prosecution says good...same with the families.

It would be interesting to learn how this case is progressing through the appeals process.

1 out of 5 stars Ignores the obvious.......2007-01-05

This book ignore the obvious question that should come to mind:
if indeed, there was evidence that would have exonerated Scott Peterson or at least have shed reasonable doubt on the prosecution's case, why did his legal defense team not present it in court? Where were those witnesses, where was the evidence?
Unlike some other defendants on death row, Scott was not represented by an incompetent, inexperienced and/or overworked public defender. His legal defense team was the best that money could buy: a renowned criminal defense lawyer (Mark Geragos) backed up by a team of top-notch attorneys, investigators, paralegals, etc etc.

5 out of 5 stars Three Florida Cases: Jerry Rogers, Roy Swafford, Peter Ventura.......2005-03-10

Jerry Layne Rogers, Sr. -- wrongfully convicted and innocent. From 1989 - 1992, I was his investigator at CCR.

Mr. Rogers' case consisted in 1992 of at least 80 boxes of documents, from court files, prosecutor and law enforcement files, trial and evidentiary hearing transcripts, etc. Mr. Rogers's case was the largest and most complicated that CCR [The Office of Capital Collateral Representative -- a state agency in the judicial branch of Florida government] has ever represented that I am aware of.

The second largest and most complicated was that of Mr. Gerald Stano, whose lead attorney during most of the development of his case was Mark E. Olive.

In 1995, Mr. Rogers began receiving pro bono representation from the Washington, D.C. law firm Covington and Burling. The result was an unanimous Florida Supreme Court (FSC) 26 page opinion ordering a new trial in Mr. Rogers' case due primarily to prosecutorial misconduct, in particular Brady v. Maryland violations.

To read the opinion, go to the FSC website, then at "Public Information", to the recent opinions, to the year 2001, then toward the bottom at February 15, 2001, one will find the FSC opinion.

During the summer of 2002, Mr. Rogers was re-convicted, however sentenced to life upon the jury recommendation. Now twice Mr. Rogers has been wrongfully convicted.

In 2004, the Florida 5th District Court of Appeal denied relief. The FSC declined to accept jurisdiction and thus denied the petition for review.

Mr. Rogers' case is pending Federal review.

For those interested in reading the narrowly decided by four to three vote Florida Supreme Court opinions regarding two more death sentenced persons whose innocence is an authentic issue, please go to the FSC website, then go to the recent opinions, then chose the correct year and scroll down to the following two cases:

Roy Swafford: April 18, 2002

Peter Ventura: May 24, 2001

Additionally, the issue in the below cases is DNA testing that proves that Roy Swafford did not rape Brenda Rucker:

Roy Swafford: March 26, 2004 Case Nos. SC03.931 and SC03.1153

5 out of 5 stars Invaluable critique of American criminal "justice.".......1998-11-12

We tend to a caste system in the U.S. There are those accused of "crime" and the rest of us, good-thinking people. This book shatters that myth by exposing the number of people falsely accused and convicted--who sometimes spend decades in prison or are even executed!--while the truly guilty run free. Unethical prosecutors (who seldom suffer any consequences), ignorant and biased judges, overzealous police more intent on conviction than real justice--all are covered. It's hard to put down, and ends with succinct recommendations to change the system so that the criminal injustice system DOES change. Highly recommended.

Dallas Hamilton's perfect world is torn apart when her husband, a rising superstar in the evangelical world, is arrested for the murder of a porn star.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Superb Legal Thriller.......2007-07-03

'Presumed Guilty' is a legal thriller full of twists and turns.

This story features Ron Hamilton who is the pastor of a mega church. He is also an anti pornography activist. He ends up being arrested for the murder of a porn star. His wife, Dallas, does not believe the accusations and thinks that the pornography industry has set him up.

Throughout the book, there are numerous surprises. The author also does a great job of weaving spiritual themes throughout. This novel is very good not only from an entertainment standpoint; it is also very thought provoking.

This is the third book I have read by this author and I will certainly be reading more. This is a great book as are the others of his that I have read. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Bravo!! Most Christ-centered novel I've ever read.......2007-05-07

This novel will make a great movie. It is riveting, suspenseful, and has all types of twists. I just LOVED the way James wove the gospel in and how he hit on forgiveness, the afterlife, lukewarmness, spiritual warfare and so much more. Plus he addressed some very common temptations people can easily fall prey to the adverse consequences. I loved the Dallas character--her unshakable faith and the part about the angel.

This happened to be the first James Scott Bell book I've read and after reading it, I bought six other JSB books and look forward to them.

5 out of 5 stars "Presumed Guilty"... Suspenseful, Educational, and Inspiring!.......2006-08-30

James Scott Bell's "Presumed Guilty" is yet another of this fine author's novels, brilliantly weaving together a story of suspense and inspiration... while at the same time providing his readers with insight (from his background as a trial lawyer), into our often-less-than-perfect legal system. Authors Bell and Terri Blackstock have a unique ability to create spellbinding stories, while remaining true to their deeply-held Christian beliefs. Hopefully they'll both continue writing to entertain, educate, and inspire us! --Ron Howe (a.k.a. Toby Martin II) Erskine, Minnesota

5 out of 5 stars COMPLETELY worth reading.......2006-07-09

This book was full of twists and turns and kept me wanting more and did not want to put it down! I believe that this is a perfect example of a book that if we do not keep our faith strong in the Lord, then Satan can tear a family apart using anyway he can because he does not want strong Christian families. Bell made me walk away wanting to be sure my family and myself stay in tune with God.
IT was a SUPERB book!!!!!!!!!!!

2 out of 5 stars Did I read the same book as the rest of the reviewers?.......2006-07-04

In an effort to better understand the current market in Christian publishing, I picked up a copy of _Presumed Guilty_. The story, as revealed in the book jacket, appeared to push the envelope for Christian fiction, so I bit.

At about seventy pages, I nearly put the book down. And I never give up on books, no matter how bad.

Much has been said about the state of Christian fiction today. A call has gone out to make stories "grittier"; if Bell's book is indicative, grittiness has been achieved. But writing stories that push the limits of tawdriness can't spell success in itself. Bell's story of a pastor's dalliance with a pornstar and the fallout from that indiscretion is about as sleazy as it gets without being clinical in detail or overtly titillating. Christian publishers still have a standard to meet.

What makes a story successful is strong characterization, a believability that makes it possible for the reader to identify with the characters, a well-told tale, and in Christian fiction, a greater understanding of the world God has given us. Most of all, the quality of writing--word choices, phrasing, etc.--must be high. Those elements make or break a story. Sadly, they broke _Presumed Guilty_.

Reader identification--on any level--simply vanishes in this story. We see plenty of reactions to events that swirl around Pastor Ron Hamilton, his wife Dallas, and their two adult children, but most readers will need to ignore understanding any of their motivations. The characters reacted to countless events around them, but most normal people would have gone a different direction and had better reasons for doing so.

Despite the nature of the story, the characters suffer from a generic Christianity written to appeal to the broadest swath of Christian belief. This problem plagues most Christian fiction today. Again, push too hard and readers will complain if Christian characters aren't "Christian" enough. In _Presumed Guilty_, the wife, knowing she's neglected the intimate part of her marriage, tries to woo her husband back by slipping into a pair of tight jeans and pouring a couple glasses of sparkling apple cider. No slinky lingerie? No champagne? Bell has her husband out in a motel room with a pornstar, but he can't push the boundaries on how he writes that Christian wife back home.

This is a common problem. It offers a plastic Christianity that has no place for Christians to be...well, real people. The underlying message is that you can't be a Christian and drink wine or wear lingerie, even if solidly orthodox Christians in the real world do such things. Such is the nature of the market right now.

Characterization issues aren't the only problem. The story here borders on fantasy. Deus ex machina elements abound, especially in the sub-plot about the son. Also, key bad guys soften a little too easily. As for the ending, it's about as contrived as can be. Nor was I a fan of the general writing. Bell's descriptions are simplistic, his writing chokes on repetitive "subject/verb/predicate" constructions, and he commits the unpardonable sin of loading this book with the verb "is" and all its tenses. Good writing? Hardly.

The book saves itself from a one-star review on Bell's ability to juggle a complex set of story elements. A lesser author would have struggled to keep all the plates spinning, but Bell wraps up every plot point and leaves no dangling issues. For readers who hate to see sub-plots up and blow away, that's refreshing.

A fair book. It definitely pushed the boundaries of what stories are tellable in Christian fiction, even if it fails to give us characters who are indicative of other streams of thought and action within the broader base of Christianity. I'm a bit tired of seeing the same 2-D Christian characters and their predictable moral responses to life, even when that life is spinning madly out of control as in _Presumed Guilty_. If Christian authors do better in this regard, perhaps the readership will not only get better books, but a wider perspective on the Christian life and how to live it.

1 out of 5 stars Total junk and a waste of time.......2007-03-29

Books don't get much worst then this one. I read an interview that this author did with Ralph Bellamy and he was asked. "Why do you think that the public was so intent on believing the Ramseys were involved with the death of their daughter?"

Singular's response was "people need to hate and they need to focus their hatred on someone." Wow that is profound Stephen, you just crushed my world view. I thought that maybe alot of the public like myself maybe a little suspicious of the Ramseys because they were not cooperative with the police from the very beginning. The got lawyered up the first day of the murder and John Ramsey still planned on flying in a private plane with his wife and son to Michigan only about an hour after he discovered that his daughter was dead. Now none of this means that the Ramseys killed their daughter in and of itself but it is suspicous and would raise some eyebrows.

This author is not worth refuting anymore then I would attempt to refute someone who said that martians killed jonbenet. It's just a waste of time and so is this book. If you are into wild eyed conspiracies and think that the CIA, the Mafia, the government up to the president of the U.S.A. was involved in the assasination of JFK. If you believe that president Bush orchestrated 9-11 and you think that you have been abducted by aliens, that Elvis is alive and so is Bigfoot, then this is your book. If on the otherhand logic is in your vocabulary then pass on this piece of trash.

    2 out of 5 stars Not what I expected.......2006-10-03

I was disappointed from the first few pages of the first chapter with Mr. Singular's references to Kenneth Starr and the investigation of Bill Clinton (re "presumed guilty" comparisons via the media) and referenced again in the final pages of the final chapter.
Unfortunately, in the chapters between the first and the final, there is little that hasn't been surmised or said before in this sad case. Had been anxious to read this book and hear the fine detail of its previewed ideas. However, after reading it the ideas seem more like interesting conjecture than plausible answers to the lingering questions of this unsolved murder.

    Presumed Guilty, by Stephen Singular

Stephen Singular is a freelance journalist who did his own investigation into the murder of JonBenét Ramsey. This book lacks an index, a table of contents, photographs, or diagrams. It is an account of his experiences while reporting on this crime. Its main value is the reports on the practice of journalism (Chapter 28). Crime news has been highlighted in the 1990s. Talk show hosts knew who was guilty, they didn't need any evidence to jump to their conclusions (p.3). Well educated journalists were acting like a mob who wanted a verdict first and a trial later (pp.6-7). [Corporate concentrated ownership? The attacks on President Bill Clinton suggest this.] Real news was buried (pp.11-12). Did the power elite run Boulder like a private club (p.20)? [Is it different in other towns?]

Singular investigated the child pornography racket on the Internet and told Boulder D.A. Alex Hunter about it (p.25). The Ramseys cooperated with the police by giving samples but no formal interview (p.35). When they appeared in public they were harassed by the press (p.36). The Boulder power elite shunned the Ramseys. People assumed a resident of their house killed JonBenét(p.37). The Boulder police rejected help from the more experienced Denver police or the Colorado Bureau of Investigations (p.41). The Ramseys needed a lawyer to bury their daughter (p.65)! Were pageants for children a sort of pyramid scheme (pp.70-71)? Chapter 9 tells of the extensive interviews of the Ramseys by the Boulder police on 12-26-1996. After a police interview the Ramseys held a press conference (pp.83-85). D.A. Hunter had been warned to "be careful". Numerous powerful people had been in the Ramseys' house before the crime (p.138).

'Part Three' continues his reporting. Singular tells about Boulder and its ruling elite (Chapter 19). D.A. Hunter would not prosecute the Ramseys unless he had the evidence to convict (Chapter 21). Chapter 23 discusses child pageants and their implications. [Were they related to the eugenics movement in the early 20th century? Does the interest in the death of someone rich and beautiful result from jealousy?] Chapter 24 tells of the personal intrigues between the D.A. and the police. Could an astrologer solve this crime (Chapter 25)? The ransom note is in Chapter 27. To learn about contemporary culture and tabloid journalism read Chapter 28! Singular's theory is in Chapter 30; can you believe it?

'Part Four' says several Boulder police went to the FBI headquarters to speak with experts. When they returned they questioned hundreds of possible suspects in the Boulder and Denver areas (p.225). The grief after Princess Diana's death affected millions who only saw her in pictures in the press (p.226). The comment of Police Chief Tom Koby bears repeating: the less you know about an event the easier it is to give advice. [Or is it?] Chapter 33 tells about the arrest of a huge international child porn ring, one of them living close to Boulder. The 'Epilogue' ends in February 1999. The Grand Jury did not indict either John or Patsy or anyone else. It remains an unsolved case to this day. There is a palm print and DNA to identify someone.

5 out of 5 stars More than a cursory glance required.......2002-07-19

Any reading into the JonBenet murder investigation must include this book. Singular includes much information and speculation that doesn't make it into the mainstream press, but is, quite frankly, common knowledge regarding possible child-pornography connections to this gruesome and tragic event. While it is true that Singular raises more questions than he answers, the timing of the book (published in 1999) made that necessary. He had no answers, and the questions, at that time, were not being raised.

Now, as more and more children are disappearing off the streets, from in front of their homes and even from their own bedrooms, this book requires a second and third glance. There is far more going on here than meets the eye, and it has been going on for far too long.

JonBenet is a symbol for what is happening across America today, and she will not rest in peace until we know what happened and why, and until we know enough to put an end to it, once and for all.

1 out of 5 stars singularly strange and disappointing.......2000-04-30

Mr. Singular poses the question, "What if Jon Benet's death was connected to the dark world of child pornography?" He poses this question to the police, district attorneys, friends of the ramseys -- and he believes it is enormously significant that his question is universally met with a long silence, followed by the comment, "that's very interesting." Has this guy ever been in therapy? Doesn't he know that the responses he's getting are either pure politeness or an attempt to discover just how deep his craziness runs?

He offers no evidence to support his scenario and not only raises more questions that he answers, but he questions his own answers -- every other sentence in this book ends with a question mark. This is investigative reporting?

Mr. Singular castigates the media for presuming the guilt of the ramseys without evidence -- but he feels no shame about putting forward his own nightmare scenario and presuming its validity without offering a shred of evidence.

This was not the best book by Tess Gerritsen I have ever read, but I must confess that I enjoyed it. It was certainly not as graphic or horrific as 'The Surgeeon' or 'The Apprentice', but it kept my interest. This was almost more of a romance novel and could have lost me at any time, but I stayed with it and found it to be a good story. (could be a Lifetime movie)

    4 out of 5 stars ENJOYABLE.......2004-07-29

Tess Gerritsen is by far one of the best mystery/suspense authors. Presumed Guilty did not have the intense suspense as some of her medical thrillers but it was still enjoyable. It was well written and was an enjoyable mystery. I purchase anything written by Tess Gerristen and have not yet been disappointed.

The thing is, I picked up this book after throughoutfully enjoying Gerritsen's medical thrillers (I figured they'd feature the same gripping story-telling) but what I found was a lukewarm novel, filled with two-dimensional characters and a terribly boring plot. The ending was nice, but it wasn't enough to save this book.

1 out of 5 stars 1 star/1 penny is too much for this utter trash.......2007-08-07

Stacy Koon was the bigoted police officer found guilty on federal charges of violating the rights of Mr. Rodney King. You don't treat a dog this way, much less a human being. The fact that this man can profit by telling his lies in a book is truly amazing; I suppose this is the repercussions of a capitalist society. One penny for this book is still too much!

    4 out of 5 stars A Gripping Expose'.......2005-10-17

"Presumed Guilty" is a compelling, skillfully written first-hand account of the tragedy and drama surrounding the apprehension of Rodney King. The author, Stacey Koon, does an excellent job of depicting police life and he tells the story in a true, real way. His style is detailed and persuasive as he takes you from the fast-paced arrest to back-stories of his police career, and finally to the trial and the brilliant strategy created by the defense.

This is unquestionably a fascinating story. While this is an easy plot to follow, I do recommend getting some background information before reading this account, because you will better understand Koon's writing.

5 out of 5 stars The Real Telling Point of the Entire King Affair.......2002-09-13

The crux of this account is Stacey Koon's observation that when ALL of the evidence (and not just a few seconds of videotape, punctuated by activist oratory) was lawfully presented to a trial jury, and explained in a reasonable fashion, the jury determined that the officers were not guilty of the primary crime with which they had been charged. Everything after that was society's emotional reaction based upon irresponsible media inflammatory over-dosage.

    5 out of 5 stars truth.......2002-08-18

It is a shame this book is out of print and that is wasn't given much publicity. It is a fast read and eyeopening to the side of the story that the media kept from the public. I recommend it highly.

4 out of 5 stars For Those Who Dare, The Other Side.......2002-07-24

An excellent well-written defense of the infamous police who beat Rodney King. Koon, of course, was the Sgt. in charge at the scene, so he can hardly be considered to be an unbiased source. He makes his case with some skill, and he is able to present himself successfully as a sympathetic character. He points out that most of those who condemn him out of hand really have no idea what went on that night. He lays his defense out carefully and goes point by point explaining his own thinking and his perception of what happened. Koon emphasizes his belief that King was on PCP and his contention that if the police had been able to employ a chokehold the whole incident would never have occurred. He also takes a few well aimed shots at his old boss, the controversial Police Chief Darrel Gates... He also makes a deft attack on the media's evident bias against him, and ruefully points out that the media's `public person' defense of their actions was self created since they made Koon a `public person'. He also rightly points out that the Federal Case was double jeopardy. One need not be convinced by the argument to appreciate the importance of the book. The picture on the back with Koon looking sorrowful and sheepish though, is a bit much.

        Book Description

A premier New Testament scholar explores how Jesus' trial and execution are portrayed in the New Testament and how that portrayal has affected biblical studies, Christian theology, and Jewish-Christian relations through history. Tomson has written an accessible, responsible analysis of the biblical accounts of Jesus' death, demonstrating how, through compounded misunderstandings, they contributed to anti-Jewish sentiment in the early church and later history.

Tomson's question of how Jesus is to be understood in his first-century Judean context is a critical one not only for biblical scholars, but for anyone concerned about human rights and interreligious dialogue today.
