5 out of 5 stars Perfect guide book -- not for men only.......2006-11-05

My elderly dad just gave me his 1975 Eldorado, but he wouldn't give up his Chilton's Repair Manual for me to have! I had to buy my own and was pleased to find it available at Amazon.com. It's an easy to understand manual even for a woman with not much knowledge about her new (old) car, but I'm learning!

5 out of 5 stars Credibility and Accountability.......2005-09-27

With all of the fraud and mis-representation that occurs over the internet these days, it was difficult to believe that I would receive a product that would be worthy of great merit. The Repair Manual that I received was not only in excellent condition, but was just what I wanted. Thank you for selling credible and reliable products with such a fine company as Amazon.

2 out of 5 stars Very detailed, yet not very detailed........1998-09-15

I had a problem with the idle speed on my car, so I bought this book to fix this problem myself. This book was very detailed to help me find my problem. My problem was electrical in nature, and this book instructed me how to do a self-diagnostic. I performed a self-diagnostic and found out the particlular electrical code which was causing my problems. Good. But this book did not tell me which part needed to be replaced in order to fix the problem. I assumed I had to replace the ECM, so I looked it up, and this book told me how to fix and replace everything related to the fuel system except how to replace the ECM. So, now I'm back to square one. In trying to learn more about the electrical workings of the car, I tried to read about all the different systems which proved to be a difficult task because this book scatters information about particular elecrical systems throughout various sections of various chapters making the learning of these electrical systems a task as difficult as fixing most problems on my car.

4 out of 5 stars Good addition to your car book collection.......2007-02-20

I bought this manual for my husband because we were lucky enough to find a 1996 Fleetwood (the last year they were built). He already had an older Fleetwood, but there was enough different that we needed this manual. Not meant to be a comprehensive shop manual, this one is good for the occasional 'shadetree' mechanic. Lots of good, basic information and helpful hints, but don't expect to become an expert based on the content. Definately worth the price, though - in saved time and anguish!

3 out of 5 stars TOTAL car care??? Not really.......2006-02-27

This book does not cover every aspect of the car. It does help though. If you buy this book you might want to get the Haynes version as well. Two books printed by the same company yet very different...odd. Between the two of them you can get almost all the info you need. Both books are severly lacking/or just plain wrong in the body interior section. If you are lucky enough to own the official GM Service manuals for your car and you are not a professional mechanic,The Chilton & Haynes books will help in understanding what it is the service manual is trying to tell you. Sort of like one of those dummies books that were popular not too long ago :o)

1 out of 5 stars Chilton 1990 Caddy repair manual.......2006-02-26

If you buy this book like I did because you want to make relatively simple (but potentially very expensive) repairs yourself, say like fix an electric window, or replace a heater blower, or an automatic radio antenna but not its motor, or understand the vacuum system so you can trouble-shoot and fix vacuum-dependant things, I have one word for you: FORGEDDABOUDIT! This Chilton is pathetically superficial. A complete waste of time. Over-rated, over-hyped, and insultingly vague. Burn this!

4 out of 5 stars Lots of pictures of exact Caddy cars.......2006-02-25

I liked the clear pictures and simple step by step instructions to maintain or do common repairs to my Caddy. Chilton is the best value for most repairs.

The Factory manuals: $104.00 to $40. each (there are two, One for the motor and transmission, and one for the Body and everything else)

The factory manuals are far more complete, giving very detailed information and description for every connector and screw.

Depending on your need to know, the Chilton manual may be enough.
It weighs about 18 oz., One GM manual weighs 108 oz.

I finally bought both the Chilton for most tasks, and the GM manual when I really needed more information for very uncommon tasks.

5 out of 5 stars great book.......2002-09-28

This is an excellent book, invaluable for serious Eldo climbers. Whoever wrote that first review probably didn't read the intro to the guide where it describes how to use the book. People who know how to use guidebooks to confusing climbing areas should have no problems.

5 out of 5 stars exceptional.......2002-09-13

I just read the only other review available for this book and felt a 2nd opinion was worthwhile...

Eldo is a worldclass climbing destination. This means that the place is changing. The book is a few years old so yes - some of the data about raps and fixed gear(for example) isn't completely accurate. (but then no climber should rely entirely on any guidebook!)

However, this guide has an incredible amount of information about the incredible number of climbs. The route descriptions are excellent and the maps more than suffice. Eldo is a big place with a ton of routes. I'd like to see someone try to better organize and describe the routes - I don't think it can be done. The book IS organized well, it just takes some time to get oriented to the canyon and it's MANY formations.

Any place as big and historic as eldorado canyon is going to be very hard to cram into a single guidebook. Rossiter does an exceptional job. Any experienced climber will find this book to more that suit their needs for a trip to eldo.

1 out of 5 stars Dangerously BAD Guidebook.......2002-05-24

This guidebook is not only confusing, it is downright DANGEROUS to depend upon. The tragedy is that it is the only guidebook devoted totally to Eldo.

Why this book [stinks]:

1. There is no logic to the formatting. Seems totally random. Is it north/south? east/west? You can't tell! Therefore you cannot just walk along the cliffs & flip pages SEQUENTIALLY to figure out where the [devil] you are. No attempt even made to match text descriptions of routes to the topos on opposing pages. Nor to place trail maps in logical places in relation to routes/parking areas. He counts each section's routes from "1" again, so you have route numbers repeated all over the place. (You can't just say, "Look up route #16." There are SEVEN route "16s".)

2. Topos are a joke

3. Book lacks USEFUL photos with route ID lines

Lots of pretty pictures of elite climbers doing 11s - 13s, but rarely a photo to help the mortals of us find moderates or ANYONE to even know where he is. (Many pretty photos though of the author and his friends being rock jocks.)

4. Rappel locations & escape routes NOT clearly indicated.

5. Book weighs a TON. Would have been better to break this anvil of a book into sections for each area, that you can clip to a harness. (Like the guides for the Gunks).

6. . It was not just us -- for 3 trips we were constantly running across people there who had the same book, and cursed it up and down just like we were. Even people who had been climbing there for many seasons.

Rossiter's other guidebooks are plagued by the same lack of organization. He needs to grasp the, "newcomer to the area" perspective, which is the TARGET AUDIENCE for a guidebook, after all.

This man obviously did not have an editor who (ahem) really tested the guidebook by going there and trying to USE it. Which is the only way to judge such a book. Perhaps he did not have an editor at all.

Use at your own GREAT risk. Please supplement with other general Boulder Area guidebooks to get some sanity into the equation.

Book Description

Again, baesd on personal experience! When Donald Goines was discharged from the Air Force, he was addicted to heroin. To support his habit he staged the robbery of a number of local houses. And from that experience came Eldorado Red! It's the vicious story of crooks who get richer with the dollars of the ghetto poor. He's got it knocked; new cars, mellow women and plenty money. Then he learns that treachery falls at the feet of his own son!

2 out of 5 stars DASHEIKZ 2 CENTZ: NO, NOT THIS TIME- WARNING: SPOILER HERE.......2006-09-03

Donald Goines is one of the greatest black ghetto crime writers of all time. That's mainly due to the lack thereof. Usually, I can look at one of his books like a movie. Not this one. Don't get me wrong. I love Donald Goines. But this time, it just looked like he was in a hurry to finish the book. This would have made a terrible movie. The book finished on a totally different note then where it had started and I'm refering to the tone of the story and (especially) the initial plot. Do not read on if you wanna be surprised because I am about to spoil the ending. Finding Buddy's body in the trunk would have been more effective had there been a lead up to it. The book ends with the characters of "Tank" and the leader of Buddy's crew (I think it was "Steve"?) as it's Heroes (or Antiheroes). How the HELL did that happen. Also, all of the female characters were underused and totally worthless (save for Tina and the last chick Eldorado was with) to the story. This book was very sloppy and all over the place. While I understand that Brother Goines was not a conventional writer, and happy endings are not commonplace in Goines's literature, I wish he would have brought this story full circle (or at least 3/4), because I feel like I missed out on something. Strictly for HardCore "Goines" fans. May the brother R.I.P.

4 out of 5 stars 'Ol Red.......2005-01-19

This story keeps the theme of Goines' work as usual. The main character (Eldorado Red) runs a few numbers houses, but his son Buddy and some of his friends rob them. After that, its clearly on. He doesn't fail to paint a picture the entire time, two scenes stuck out in particular for me. One of a mass of roaches which made my stomach crawl, and one of a fight toward the end with a hitman and a young dude where the latter gets his arm broken. The ending is pretty good too, so from top to bottom, its another solid piece from Donald Goines.

5 out of 5 stars Now I see..........2004-08-31

This is the second book I've ever read by Goines and I'm seeing a pattern--he introduces characters and then loses interest in them halfway through to the point of nonexistence (ex. Auntie Dee and Shirley). Ironically, I don't mind. The imagery on the roach house was phenomenal-I was grossed out enough to start looking around my own apartment.
All of the characters were well-developed, the plot ran smoothly and the action was quick but realistic. I wasn't so impressed by "Never Die Alone", but now I see why my ex-boyfriend reads all of Goines' books. I'm already pulling out the next one.

4 out of 5 stars First trial.......2003-08-29

This book was very, very good to me! This is my first time reading a Donald Goines novel( that's why the review is titled first trial), and I was pleased with the results! This book kept me wondering what was going to happen next. The fistfights, were interesting and I kept reading because I kept wanting to see what was going to happen. The characters were pretty realistic and the plot was great. A son robs his own father's number's house with friends and things the story gets better after that. The ending was alright, not to bad. I also appreciated the armed robbery parts. Those were suspenseful! The book is worth buying and I'm looking for more of his works! It was close to 5 stars!

Book Description

No event of American life prior to the Civil War ap-proached the impact of the rush for California gold. The first traces of raw gold were found at a sawmill on the American River in January, 1848. Within a year, tens of thousands of 'Forty-niners' were making their way to the vast new territory conquered in the war with Mexico. Never before in history, and never since, had so great a gold-bearing tract been found-a belt seventy miles wide running the length of California, from the Klamath Moun-tains in the north to the Mojave Desert in the south. All routes to San Francisco, gateway to the mines, were lengthy-six months on average-arduous, and dangerous: overland from the Missouri River across the Rocky Moun-tains and the Sierra Nevada, via the pre-canal Isthmus of Panama, or on a sailing ship around Cape Horn. Eldorado presents the full, colorful, character-filled story of those who risked their lives chasing the end of the rainbow-not just Americans, but a polyglot horde of men, women, and children of all races from the farthest corners of the globe.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Walker shines in this superb narrative ..........2003-07-14

Many books have been written about the California Gold Rush, and most recently a popular contender by H. W. Brands, but only the acclaimed author and historian Dale L. Walker, and expert in California history, could bring us such a brilliant and comprehensive account of this time and place of the American West, and he does so in his latest release, ELDORADO.

In the pre-Gold Rush era, California was a mecca of commerce for traders from all over the world. Those who stepped foot on its shores, or made the overland journeys across the Oregon or Santa Fe trails, all sought a prosperous beginning. John Augustus Sutter was no exception, as he left his wife and children and their home in Switzerland, evading substantial debt and economic loss, to start over. Dale L. Walker enlightens the reader on the important role the "Empresario" Sutter played in the commercial and social development of northern California, and ultimately, if not ironically, how such a man in his business ventures suffered, rather than gained, from the discovery of gold at the site of his new saw mill.

Though the story of James Marshall's discovery of gold at Sutter's mill, under Sutter's employ, is likely the key highlight in the history of the Gold Rush, it is a perfect example of how the glamour of such an event can mask the reality of the craze, if not madness, that developed afterward. Walker offers great depth on how the news of the gold discovery reached the media and governments all over the world. How the news was received, who believed it and who didn't, and how those who did attempted to claim their share of the new fortune. Walker offers detailed accounts of the sea journeys around Cape Horn, or the partial sea journeys to the malaria laden jungles of Panama, then to San Francisco Bay - the prices they paid, the accommodations they received, and the fears and anxieties they faced. Rather by land or by sea, the trek alone was dreadful and life-staking. The disease cholera an invisible gauntlet, more so then the social and environmental challenges, to the success in reaching the land of gold.

Dale L. Walker has never failed to provide readers with a compelling, engaging narrative on any of his subjects, but ELDORADO could very well be his best work yet, and is sure to receive worldwide praise and recognition. The book belongs in every public and school library, and in the personal library of world leaders. It's a book for all times and all ages, a tremendous accomplishment, and Dale L. Walker more precious than gold to the writings of American history.

5 out of 5 stars Unique, Penetrating, Fascinating.......2003-01-07

Dale L. Walker's approach to writing American history makes him the most absorbing historian of our times. He tells history by focusing on those who were involved; by drawing vivid and penetrating portraits of the characters who made the history. He is also an amazing researcher, unearthing material that escapes others. This makes him far more readable than Ambrose, and his material is richer as well. Eldorado tells the story of the California gold rush in such rich detail that the whole era springs to life. We come to understandings about what happened, and the men and women who settled California, and the implications of the gold rush that linger even in present times. This is a remarkable work, by a masterful historian, and one that, I suspect, will win literary awards.

Book Description

Eldorado, Texas, is being invaded by polygamists from Colorado City. “Outsiders” unfamiliar with what they do and how they do it are aggressively seeking information about the group. And they should . . . The public needs to know how the one-man dictatorship developed and how maniacal Warren Jeffs rules today. He and his lieutenants are highly skilled and articulate business men who have mastered the art of deception and therefore pose a threat to any community they inhabit. . . Colorado City historian Benjamin Bistline's first deeply documented book, The Polygamists: A History of Colorado City, Arizona was written to present the truth of the beginnings of the group and its original religious doctrine. Over the years, that doctrine has been verbally “rewritten” by religious leaders to support their claim of God's approval of their one-man tyrannical dictatorship. . . For “outsiders” to whom Colorado City and polygamy are new, the first book was overwhelming with deep documentation. So we offer you this book, condensed, simplified, and easy to follow. . . People across America are asking how it is that girls as young as thirteen can be forced to marry, and not even to young men but old men; and how it is that women are treated as chattel and belong not to themselves or their husband, but to the Priesthood; and how it is that wives and children can suddenly be reassigned to a “more obedient” man; and how it is that teenage boys are cast out so older men can have more wives. . . (And now these disenfranchised boys are finally finding help from an organization in Salt Lake City.) And finally, how is it that tax dollars of American citizens are not only supporting many large polygamist families, but helping their communities expand. . . Polygamy abuses in America remain in the public eye thanks to Oprah, CNN, ABC Primetime, A&E Television and other media sources, including newspapers The Salt Lake Tribune, The Spectrum of St. George, Utah, The Phoenix New Times, The Arizona Republic, and the Deseret Morning News. With polygamists setting up an enclave in Texas, The Eldorado Success, San Antonio Express-News, Fort Worth Star Telegram, The Dallas Morning News, and others are working to make their citizens aware.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Very Interesting.......2007-09-22

This is a very interesting book which helps explain why the polygamists believe what the do. It would have been helpful if there was a guide that stated the various peoples names and who they are.

5 out of 5 stars A unique history of a idiosyncratic group.......2006-09-25

Ben Bistline's history of the First Ward of Colorado City is unique excursion into a secretive group dedicated to a non-mainstream set of beliefs and practice. The Colorado City Polygamists is the shorter version of this history and is more suited to the general (and in particular) non-LDS reader. While a background in restorationist religious history is useful it is not essential to enjoying this insider view of the Fundamentalist Church of Latter Day Saints (or FLDS). The book is full of names and events of the 20th century development of a utopian group dedicated to a practice now shunned by the mainstream LDS church. For a student of American utopian experiments this story has the typical and sad end of most American experiments in group living with the rise of charismatic and erratic leader leading the people into the wilderness in the nominal pursuit of purity and truth. Do not look for sensational from this book but a respectful yet tough telling of the inside religious story of a eccentric group of American utopians.

The convertible, also a 1971 introduction, was phased out at the end of 1976. In 1979 a new and radically smaller model took over the name. This book is a compilation of road and comparison tests, driving impressions, technical and performance data and new model introductions.
