3 out of 5 stars Good message, flimsy construction........2007-02-20

My son asked right off the bat, why the pages aren't numbered and why is it falling apart. Same old Rich Dad messages.....I thought it was worth sharing with him. Pick it up at the library.

5 out of 5 stars Not only for kids.......2006-06-30

Although in cartoons, as is happening to me, in my journey to financial freedom I need my wife to support me (sometimes there will be things most people won't get if they haven't read Kiyosaki before), and specially if your wife doesn't read this kind of literature, buy this book...for her! In less than an hour you'll understand the main message from Kiyosaki.

5 out of 5 stars Rich Dad broke the code........2005-08-05

I ordered this book with a skeptical outlook. The other financial instruction books I purchased for my teen lasted all of ten minutes. This book arrived, she opened it, started reading, and didn't put it down until finished. She was so excited, she called me at work to tell me she had learned about assets, liabilities, expenses, and income. She said the concepts were so simple, she didn't understand why they aren't teaching this in school. Now, she's pointing out investments to me! Rich Dad actually got the attention and respect of a teenager. I'm very impressed.

5 out of 5 stars Help Your Kids Save Their Pennies.......2005-06-22

This is a children's comic book that presents kids with the information that goes way beyond "Save your pennies and the dollars will take care of themselves." There are also subtle lessons on values and ethics, too. It shows--pictorially, using two different styles--how a youngster can put the concepts they represent immediately to work. The book goes well beyond the "save your pennies" philosophy I was raised on. The book introduces terms that some kids never hear until they take their first economics class. I liked the presentation style that looks vaguely like a Tim Allen movie--artistic washes, subtle tones. Kids will love the brightly colored segments. More importantly--for the parents at least--they are sure to absorb some sound ideas about ensuring their own futures. The purpose of the book is clear: the sooner you learn to manage your money, the more you'll have to enjoy.

4 out of 5 stars Rat Race or Financial Freedom.......2005-02-04

Robert Kiyosaki's story presents difficult financial concepts in simple English for kids ages 8 and up. The narrative is easy to follow and the illustrations are appropriate to the subject matter. At one point, I felt myself checking my own finances to see if I was on the right track to financial freedom through asset-building versus liability-building!

The book makes readers think about their financial future without resorting to scare tactics. The reader's choice is simple: either continue to run from paycheck to paycheck or create financial building blocks to pave your way to financial independence. The authors warn not to place all your eggs in one basket or spend your pennies on useless junk that will end up costing you more in the end.

The examples are generic with age-appropriate examples such as comic books, bicycles and newspaper routes. The ending is a little overdone, in my opinion, as a child without financial knowledge might not have the wherewithal to open an ice cream stand after one month. Nonetheless, the tone is upbeat and motivating. I highly recommend this comic book for any parent who is willing to help his or her child gain a healthy understanding and long-term relationship with wealth and the benefits it brings.

Book Description

In this newly repackaged novel from the master of crime fiction and equine thrills, pilot Matt Shore is hired to fly four racing buffs to the track-and then forced to make an emergency landing just minutes before his plane explodes. Luckily, no one is hurt, but it isn't long before Matt realizes that he's caught up in the rat race of violent criminals who are dead-set on putting anyone who stands in their way on the wrong side of the odds.

5 out of 5 stars Dick Francis with a difference.......2006-08-10

For readers like me who find most of Dick Francis's books a little chilling, this early (1971) entry to his collection is delightfully different from the others. As pilot Matt Shore investigates a series of bombings apparently aimed at one of his passengers, famous jockey Colin Ross, the points of similarity to Francis's later race-course thrillers will be obvious: a manly, laconic hero; race-course settings; a good dose of violence towards the end. But the characters here are drawn with a warmth and humanity too often missing in Francis's later works, and the writer seems truly interested in their relationships. I love the moment when the hard-as-nails trainer suddenly turns on one of the other passengers in Matt's small plane and tells him off for his lamentable self-absorption--only to find that the slightly-crooked jockey she's been at odds with throughout the story is cheering her on; the scene in the attic of a stately ducal mansion, where Matt finds the gentle and kindly, if somewhat befuddled, Duke of Wessex absorbed in playing with his ten-year-old nephew and the model trains they both love; the picnic Matt shares on a riverbank with the famous jockey and his sisters, who generously open their family to include a near-stranger even while they deal with their grief at knowing that one of the young women is fatally ill--all those and any number of other moments lift this from the deadliness of the standard contemporary crime thriller into something more meaningful, and make this a book worth reading, or even reading again.

4 out of 5 stars One of those :).......2006-05-06

This is one of the many great Francis racing-related books. I was hooked to them ever since my sister bought me "Break-in", unaware of what she was doing :). ever since, I've gathered all Francis novels I could find - and liked them all (even if not all are at the same high standards; they are all enjoyable, and this is what I look for in a book). The plots may be similar, and the main characters alike in some ways, but this is exactly what appeals to me - no more weaklings struggling to cope with existence; Mr. Francis gives you the man-for-himself type of hero. And after all, the plots are similar but not identical, and it amazes me what different results can the same recipe produce every time it's being used.
this one produced this:
Pilot Matt Shore tries to get back to an orderly life, after losing wife, a great number of jobs and his peace of mind. As most of us do, he coped by putting all feelings on "freeze". But a series of attempts on his clients' lives and the encounter of a special girl that just might teach him to love again will thaw the ice block and Matt decides to take the matter into his own hands and unravel the mystery of the attacks, so he'll be free to live again.
A great book, strong on relationships and enjoyable to the end.

5 out of 5 stars Lets go to the races.......2006-02-21

This 1971 entry into the Francis string of thrillers introduces us to Matt Shore, formerly of BOAC and currently an air taxi pilot. His passengers are often involved in the racing world, and through them Matt finds himself involved in fraud, both on and off the race course, and murder. Along the way Matt also discovers a family, new friends and romance.

Dick Francis' books are often dismissed as being formulistic. They are. The hero is always connected to the racing world, is alone and/or lonely, has a tragedy in his past, is thrust into some sort of crime conspiracy and always perserves against great odds through his fortitude. Within these limitations though Francis always manages to spin an exciting story, the mysteries are challenging, and the clues are all fairly laid out for the reader to follow. If you have read one of his books before and enjoyed it then you will probably like this one, if you did not like his work before then you will probably not like this one either. Obviously I enjoy his books.

3 out of 5 stars this is a pretty good dick francis, .......2005-04-15

It's kind of strange, but every Dick Francis is pretty much the same. It's strange because only two of his many books have the same lead character. What Francis does is find a profession, research what may pertain to said profession, and then plop his readymade protagonist and story-line into this situation.

The gift that Francis has is that as a reader I really don't mind that I have seen this plot and character twenty times before. The authors prose is elegant in its way and it allows the reader easy access to a world that is fascinating to visit. Whenever I think of Francis as an author I think of Cocteau, the French director who built worlds where poets were the rock stars of society. Francis does this with jockeys. Every time you open up one of his books, the jockey is on the highest echelon of culture even if the other characters don't realize this.

Rat Race is either a fine place to start on Francis if you have not read him before, or it is one of his more captivating short novels if you are looking for a next title in the series. If you want his best book in my opinion, try 'In the Frame.'

3 out of 5 stars Ken Reffner's expose of Rat Race.......2003-04-22

To begin with, I would first like to say that Rat Race was a much better mystery story than what I had first expected it to be. While it could have been much better, it was not a complete waste of time. This is a book that frequently centers on horse racing, which I despise, so you may want to keep my prejudices in mind while reading my opinions.

Rat Race slowly begins with pilot Matt Shore flying passengers to a horserace for a little airline company named Derrydowns. Matt was taking over for another pilot who had left the job just a week before. On his fist flight to the races Matt found out that other pilots despised him just because he worked for Derrydowns. He also found out that one of his passengers was the famous jockey, Colin Ross. Colin became one of Mattýs permanent costumers. Everything was going well with Mattýs job until he had trouble with one of the planeýs steering cables on a trip home from the races. He then made an emergency landing to have the airplane checked out. The disgusted crew was suddenly jolted by an explosion at of nowhere as they walked from the plane. Luckily, though, no one was close enough to be injured. Right timing and chance seemed to have been the only thing that saved them.

After much questioning from the Nazi-like Board of Trade, Matt was reprimanded and then decided to search for answers to the explosion. As a result he made an astonishing find: one of his passengers was an explosives expert! The ýchanceý that saved his life was now thought to be a deliberate ploy by one of his own passengers riding in the plane with him. Was this loose maniac planning to take Colin Rossý life? Maybe someone had made a bet on Colin Ross to win or lose a race and needed that bet secured. But why would he blow up a plane with no one in it.

As time passed Matt forgot about the explosion because of the fact that he met Colin Rossý sister, Nancy, and became infatuated with her. The story then turns into a boring romance between Matt, Nancy, and her doped-up ex-lover. Fortunately, the story picks up again when Colin is in another near-death plane incident. This time Nancy, who is not very experienced, is flying. The same man who hid the explosives on Mattýs plane has now sabotaged her plane. With all electrical devices not working, she is done for in the cloud-filled sky. Luckily her lover, Matt, finds out about the plot and manages to find her in the sky in his own plane and guides her to safety.

Matt now knows who has sabotaged the planes both times but is unable to have him arrested. He also finds out that others are involved. Other peoplesý lives are in danger but he cannot tell them without looking like a fool because he has no solid proof. Even more disturbing is that the crooks know that Matt knows about their scheme. Which side will come out victorious in the end?

Was this book worth reading? No. There was not enough excitement or enough suspense. Nor was the plot original. It was the same story of two lovers falling in love, some kind of event splitting them up, and they finally live happily ever after in the end. While I suppose this sort of ýfairytaleý type of story is possible, it is highly unlikely. For example, Matt is invited to move in with Colin and Nancy in the end. Colin is very rich, so the rest of Mattýs life is a breeze. I am sure this sort of thing could and does happen, but for the most part, only in dreams.

One good thing about the story, though, is that it develops the characters very well. I was able to learn the personalities of most the characters fairly well. This, of course, is essential in a mystery story. If I had to give it a grade on the overall quality of reading I would give it an average, solid ýCý.

5 out of 5 stars A must read for world travelers.......2006-04-15

The book starts in San Diego and whisks you off at the speed of a VW van to Mexico and Africa. The best part of the book is the honesty of Richard Ligato. He doesn't make you think its an easy trip, in fact, he and his wife Amanda have to overcome all kinds of obstacles. However, he remains very reflective and humbled by the whole experience. This book really draws you in to their world. A great read for anyone interested in traveling outside of the US. Lots of interesting facts and bits of trivia too.

5 out of 5 stars An amazing journey.......2005-08-24

The Ligatos have accomplished a goal that most of us only dream of. Their 3-year adventure is both heartwarming and nail-biting. They tell their stories with such clarity and passion that you can't help but get wrapped up in their adventures.

Being totally non-mechanical, I was fascinated with their tales of keeping their old VW running -- but they met such wonderful characters because it, that it wouldn't have been half as much fun in a more modern cruiser!

This book is a must read for anyone who has ever dreamed of just taking off and letting life happen. A truly great read.

5 out of 5 stars Best Travel Book Ever.......2005-08-21

This book is great! I couldnt put it down. Takes the reader along on the adventure and shares unique cultural insights. Truly an amazing acomplishment, both the trip and the book.I hope the Authors write another soon.

5 out of 5 stars A Truly Fun Adventure.......2005-08-14

A truly fun adventure in which the reader experiences life on the open road, exploring new countries and cultures, and gets a taste of what it would be like to live a more simple life.

Book Description

After circling the globe five times in the last 20 years, Bruce Northam has gathered hard-won nuggets of travel wisdom into 100 enlightening recommendations for making the most of seeing the world. In a book shaped and styled like a passport to fit easily into a backpack, the author advises, for example, to take a media sabbatical (if you haven’t traveled widely, maybe there’s an umbilical cord attached to your TV convincing you that the world is an unfriendly place. It’s not!), to go where the locals go (cops and bartenders know their terrain better than the local chamber of commerce) and to undertake exhausting itineraries with family (no one will have energy left to recycle family debates). Employing a mix of travel lore, humor, and anecdotes, Northam entertains, advises, and inspires readers to hit the road. 20 black-and-white illustrations are included.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating book.......2006-12-17

It's too bad that the most negative review of this book is the one that comes up first in Amazon's list of reviews. That's misleading, and might cause some readers to overlook this book. It's a fun read, can be read in chunks, and offers insights on almost every page.

Like others here, I've bought copies as gifts.

5 out of 5 stars Great book. Witty and funny. .......2006-06-13

I really have enjoyed this book a lot. Bruce combines his personal expiernce with some very inspiring words. Reading the reviews of the people that didnt liek it as much just makes me laugh. Obviously they havent caught the spirit of the true traveler. You gotta kick back Mr. Vagabond...let life take it where you may. Dont let things trip you up enough to get all huffy and write a bad review just because you think the guys personal expeirence doesnt help you. Jealousy stinks huh? lol.

This guy has such great things to say really. Its an easy read and creates a stirring to go and figure out what the heck he is talking about. Here's some examples:

"You can predict th length of you trip but you must nurture the width and depth of it."

"Life is like photograqphy: we use the negative to develop."

He also talks about going to the top of a building looking out towards a direction that looks interesting and going for a 1 or 2 day trek in that direction. Its great.

Anyway...I liked it.

5 out of 5 stars Perspectives of the busiest traveler in the world.......2005-10-20

If there is one thing I know about Bruce Northam it is that he is one busy traveler. Take it from someone who knows him. Bruce has been to every continent (including Antartica) and about 100 countries. Combine this experince with a wit and sarcasm that comes from a lifetime on the road and there you have his masterpiece "Globetrotter Dogma." Sure, it's not the slickest or most complete travel book out there, but it certainly is one amusing and insightful read for anyone who needs a perk in their daily routine! To read this book is simply the ability to live vicariously through the lens of a true travel veteran who's been there and done that. Highly recommended! I can't wait to read his next book ...

4 out of 5 stars Take it easy on the Globetrotter.......2005-10-07

The previous review makes a good point. The book may not hold ultimate truths about globtrotting. However, Bruce Northam believes that the process is truth; that discovery is doctrine. So what if this book ain't Dogma...it's a good travel book and it fits in your backpack.

Dogma (the plural is either dogmata or dogmas) is belief or doctrine held by a religion or any kind of organization to be authoritative. This is a travel book about what Mr Northam has done. He treats the reader like a travel companion. No bad thing.

The writer was more likely striving for globetrotting axioms.

There are some conceptual similarities between dogma and the axioms used as the starting point for logical analysis. Axioms may be thought of as concepts or "givens" so fundamental that disputing them would be unimaginable; dogmata are also fundamental (e.g. "God exists") yet incorporate also the larger set of conclusions that comprise the (religious) field of thought (e.g. "God created the universe").

Axioms are propositions not subject to proof or disproof, or are statements accepted on their own merits. Dogmata might be thought to be more complex, the product of other proofs. Philosophy and theology find ways to evaluate all statements, whether classified as axioms or dogmata.

I am grateful to Wikiledia, the free encyclopedia to help clarify this in my own mind. (...).

5 out of 5 stars Reviewing the reviewer.......2005-10-04

I note that "Vagabond" wrote one other review of a travel book, and said basically the same thing he/she said about Globetrotter Dogma....I found Globetrotter Dogma so enthralling that I bought several copies as gifts.

5 out of 5 stars Read this book! What a powerful testimony--letting God live in your life!!!.......2006-01-26

This is probably the most meaningful book I have read in a LONG time! This man is very clear in his words in speaking about how God has worked and continues to work in his life. Also, it is a easy book to read and understand. I even read for our family worship a story or two from Jim's experiences that he shares. He has the most amazing experiences he has been through. His book has made me want what he has, that walk with God, trusting in HIM...and really letting God lead in my life! I am going to be reading the 'Come to the Quiet' book next, I just got it. And look forward to more information on how to get on the road I should be on, trusting more in God to lead in my life!

Read this book, you will not be sorry! And you will find yourself wanting to share it!!!

5 out of 5 stars Life changing book.......2005-01-27

I have read this book twice, once by myself, then with my husband. Then we lent it to friends, and we recommend it to everyone, along with the Hohnberger's book "Come to the Quiet." This is the life most of us long for...simple, down to earth, a connected family, connected with our Maker. I appreciate so much Jim's heart and his love for God and his family. I have met and talked with Jim and Sally in person, and they are lovely people who take the time to speak with you and you can clearly see their heart for God. Amazing family who did what most of us only dream and talk of. Thank You, God, for this family.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome guide to a better living.......2004-03-09

Mr. Hohnberger found what all of us are still looking for. We believe that God is present all times to support us, however we hardly feel His presence among us. Our lifes are so busy that we forget the precious things. Learning how to stop and get off the train is the most interesting lesson from this book. You should take a break of your really busy schedule and read this master piece. GREAT BOOK. INSPIRED BY GOD.

5 out of 5 stars Personal relationship and Forever Friend..........2004-01-31

This book wonderfully presents God's personal interest in every part of our lives. For whatever reason, the book may not speak the same to every individual. I found myself excited to see such a profound book written to help searchers looking for a more personal relationship with God and to aid in getting beyond several walls that certain practice of religion has built. It further illustrates the true power and freedom found within a continual and personal walk with our Creator and Redeemer that just attending church or schooling at a seminary cannot provide. I can personally testify, with many stories in my life, to the fact that God does care about the minute details of our lives.

5 out of 5 stars Life as God created it to be.......2003-05-17

This book has completely changed my view on knowing and following God's will for my life. At first it is easy to think that one needs to escape the life they currently lead and head for a remote location. But read on to find the real secret to "hearing God's voice".

4 out of 5 stars Lessons from the past.......2007-06-02

Even the Rat Was White is a detailed account of racial issues throughout the history of psychology that are often glazed over or left out of many psychology textbooks. In the second edition of his book, Robert Guthrie discusses psychology's role in the racial discrimination of African Americans and other minorities. He also describes the struggles many of these individuals faced in order to achieve careers in psychology. Guthrie highlights the successful work of those African Americans who were able to push through all the barriers placed along their way within the field. Much of the information provided in this book cannot be found in general history of psychology textbooks. It is important for the future of psychology that those currently involved be aware of the transgressions of past psychologists who may have been caught up in the spirit of the times. We need to be able to step away from our work and examine our beliefs objectively, to ensure that we are not being persuaded by biases that may be detrimental to those we think we are trying to help. Guthrie provides a cutthroat picture of the narrow-minded, self-preserving view psychology has had in the past. We must move beyond these discriminating beliefs and accept a contemporary, multicultural perspective of psychology.

5 out of 5 stars Jennifer Wolf's review of Guthrie's Classic.......2007-06-01

Robert Guthrie's Even the Rat Was White: A Historical View of Psychology, 2nd Edition is an insightful and important text for the field of psychology. He utilizes this text as a means to draw attention to the collection of historical materials related to racial stereotypes toward African Americans in the field of science and the struggle African Americans faced in education and employment in psychology. He also emphasizes the importance of how the spirit of the time, or Zeitgeist, can be the guiding influence for research and has a large impact on what people believe is important. Although the text highlights the grim aspects of psychology's history, it brings to focus the contributions of African Americans in psychology and illustrates the importance of learning from the mistakes made in the past and using those findings to the betterment of science. Although Guthrie's voice is cynical in nature, his text provides a taste of psychology's history that goes unheard otherwise.

4 out of 5 stars Even the Rat Was White.......2007-05-30

In an informative and objective style, Guthrie recounts the history of African Americans and other minorities in the realm of psychology and eloquently describes the struggle that African American psychologists and students endured to bring truth and equality to the surface. He begins with a detailed historical account of African Americans throughout the centuries and their experiences with anthropology, psychology, and society. To follow, are topics such as intelligence testing, race and psychology, education, and African Americans in psychology.
The study of differences was propagated by the emergence of psychology in the late 1800s. Not to be left out of the zeitgeist, the focus on identifying racial differences only grew stronger with the new techniques of systematic experimentation and observation. This surge led to the development of elaborate racial classification systems, and studies on the perceived physiological and anatomical differences between races.
Despite the immense obstacles put in place and the atrocities inflicted on African Americans throughout the history of the US and specifically in academia, the field of psychology is slowly moving. As we study both similarities and differences between groups and individuals at present, we can hopefully move past mere skin color and work collaboratively to foster learning about all people. Authors such as Guthrie will help to fuel this paradigm shift and lead us into a new psychology, marked by the combinations of science and equality.

3 out of 5 stars Racial bias in the field of psychology.......2007-05-29

In Even the Rat Was White, Guthrie exposes racial bias in the history of psychology. Although such prejudice can be traced back to ancient times, a resurgence in the late 19th century was reflected in the emerging field of psychology where it also found legitimacy via this new "science." Guthrie's book would have been better served had he provided a broader view of the cultural context. Also, the scope of Guthrie's account of the history of psychology only extended to areas that affected racial issues, excluding other areas of study, which gave the appearance that racial differences were the main or only area of investigation within the field. Overall, Guthrie's book provided a unique perspective on the history of psychology and was enlightening in regard to the blatant racial bias that affected the topics which we study, the tools that we have used, and the profession as a whole. Racial bias in form of eugenics movement and intelligence testing is most frightening, because these problems haunt us from our not so distant past and because they persist to some degree today, and will likely reemerge in the future. Although we have overcome some of the blatant bias in the field of psychology, I wonder if this is just a reflection of our "enlightened" times, and whether some of the bias is now more insidious. Perhaps we are unaware of the current zeitgeist and will look back upon this time in history with the same embarrassment for our ignorance of important issues.

4 out of 5 stars What's past is prologue.......2007-05-29

Even the Rat was White offers the modern psychologist an alternative to current texts on the history of psychology by systematically chronicling the relationship between the field of psychology, the intellectual and cultural climate of the era, and racial and ethnic disparities. Guthrie painstakingly outlines how the historical character of the times facilitated and perpetuated psychological research and practices and how, in turn, psychology influenced past and existing perceptions of individual differences and racial and ethnic discrepancies. For instance, The first chapter of the book on the measurement of the physical attributes of different races and the instruments designed to calculate them entices the reader to continue to explore Guthrie's argument by discussing the absurd techniques employed by anthropologists to prove the inferiority of minority races under the guise of scientific research and the impact this research had on the field of psychology. Additionally, the conclusion of the second section of book highlights the fundamental difference between Guthrie's history of psychology and other standard texts in use by examining the major contributions of Black psychologists that continue to be overlooked by the field and texts depicting the history of psychology. From the study of physical characteristics that began an era in psychology fixated on individual differences instead of human commonalities to the successful rise of Black psychologists despite an overwhelmingly oppressive socio-cultural view of Black Americans, Even the Rat was White challenges the Eurocentric psychology in America and instills in the reader an intense desire to continue to confront our past and counteract racial and ethnic discrepancies in modern psychological research and practice. Even the Rat was White opens the eyes of the reader to the racially biased research and discriminatory practices and will, hopefully, aid current psychologists in learning from past mistakes so that will not be repeated in the future.

1 out of 5 stars "I sit back in wonder and I ponder.".......2007-09-19

Who better to write a guide to Hollywood than Ed Wood Jr., the worst filmmaker in history? Wood's films include the absurd anti-classics, "Plan 9 From Outer Space," "Glen or Glenda?," and "Bride of the Monster" among others. In "Hollywood Rat Race" Wood gives advice on such matters as what to pack for your trip to Hollywood (angora sweater of course), how to get an agent, whether you should have sex to get a part, and how to sleep in the park for free, before finally recommending that you just stay home instead. The book seems to be less about advice, however, than about bolstering Wood's own self-image as an acclaimed writer-director-producer. He name-drops at every available opportunity, exaggerates wildly, and frequently gets sidetracked, rambling on about angora sweaters and people's strange fetishes. It often becomes unclear in his tirades whether he is attacking others or himself. He is outraged by:

drama teachers ("Those who can, do. Those who can't, teach... Let each of them challenge me. I accept! I have made many films, yet I do not teach. I wonder why the schools and colleges hire these never-has-beens.")

actors who criticize Hollywood ("Who are these people who hate Hollywood? Perhaps a bunch of communists?")

sleazy producers ("More than a few of them will be undressed and into your dress or sweater and skirt, almost before you've got them off.")

cross-dressers ("Many of your favorite movie actors go in for this fantastic fetish. Horror of a lawsuit keeps me from naming names.")

bad filmmakers ("The only science (or fiction) about [this science fiction film] was the fact it came into being at all. And this so-called producer is still around Hollywood today taking backers' money for the same crap")

cheap novelists ("It doesn't take an overwhelming talent to write these books")

I would not recommend "Hollywood Rat Race" to anyone who plans to move to Hollywood, or anyone who doesn't plan to move to Hollywood, unless, like me, you're morbidly fascinated by Ed Wood. Wood was anything but modest about his lackluster accomplishments, but he was right about one thing: "Perhaps none of our films, so far, have been up for awards, but they are entertaining pictures." Just not entertaining in the way he meant them to be.

5 out of 5 stars Ed Wood "Beyond Reason".......2007-09-03

My introduction to film maker Edward D. Wood,Jr., came one Saturday afternoon in 1996 while visiting our local movie rental store with my daughter Lara. By happen-chance,I purchased 'Ed Wood' starring Johnny Depp, a bio epic of Wood's best remembered films made between 1952 and 1962. While watching this movie I was captivated by the passion and persistence Wood exuded as an autuer, facing many hard times in trying to 'make-it' in Hollywood. His book 'Hollywood Rat Race' captures the essence of this experience and what it takes to become an "indie film-maker' before the word became vogue. A nicely written narrative for an aspiring autuer who wishes to get a glimpse of what it takes to make a movie. Wood is an anti-heroe [Orsen Wells a heroe] who gains the sympathy of the reader because of his tireless effort in documenting his vision in such film classics as, 'Glen or Glenda,1953', 'Jail Bait,1954', 'Bride of the Monster,1955', 'The Violent Years, 1956', "Plan 9 From Outer Space, 1957,'The Night of the Gouls,1958','Sinister Urge,1960 and 'Orgy of the Dead,1962'. A remarkable body work for a writer, director and producer on a micro-film-budget who is endearingly remembered as the "Worst film-maker of all time." As a fan, I toast this book and to the life and times of Mr. Wood, "It's beyond reason".

5 out of 5 stars An Absolute MUST For Ed Wood Fans.......2004-12-21

"Hollywood Rat Race," a guide to surviving in Hollywood by none other than Edward D. Wood Jr., should be considered a must for any of his fans. Unpublished until the late-nineties, this guide covers Ed's thoughts about acting, screenwriting, producing, and a lot more. In addition, this is probably the closest we're ever going to come to Ed's memoirs. He tells stories about his early Hollywood career, his films, his friends (Kenne Duncan, Lyle Talbot, Tom Keene, some long stories about Bela Lugosi), and, best of all, his own account of the notorios baptism performed to get financing for "Plan 9 From Outer Space."
Some highlights: his scattered references to angora; his referring to the "Plan 9" cast as "The best cast I ever had" (listing off the names of David De Mering and Ben Frommer as if they were legendary); his list of some top character actors (all of them obscure); and his guide to living in Hollywood without any money (sleep in the park!). It's all written in a decidedly humorous style.
In conclusion, if you're a self-respecting Ed Wood fan, you simply can't be without this book.

4 out of 5 stars Ed Wood: Bad Director, but Highly Amusing Writer.......2002-01-11

Ed Wood is famous as "the world's worst director." That title was never true, because his movies were always interesting even on a shoestring budget. In this book, the Great Man offers his [intentionally] hilarious advice for those aspiring to Hollywood. "Stay home," he insists. "You can be a devoted actor or actress there as well as any place."

All of his favorite fetishes are here in this book as he explores the [1960s version of] seedy Hollywood. He manages to mention "angora sweaters" nearly a dozen times throughout the book. Mr. Wood warns starlets that there isn't any film in that screen test camera. He explains how to seem like a bigshot while living a dive apartment-- have all your meetings downstairs at the complex's POOL. He brags that all of his movies got RELEASED [wow]-- unlike some other cheapie
directors. He even explains how to live for FREE in Hollywood [sleep in the park-- but don't forget blankets].

Chapter Ten: How to Make a Cheap Picture and Fail. "This is the easiest chapter of all to write,"-- Ed's implied admission that maybe he isn't the Hollywood BigWig he pretends to be.

Ed wrote his books as a stream of consciousness-- and it shows. But "Hollywood Rat Race" is like having a great three hour conversion with someone who's seen it all... and can still laugh about it!
