Book Description

Jordan Buchanan is thrilled that her brother and best friend are tying the knot. The wedding is a lavish affair–for the marriage of Dylan Buchanan and Kate MacKenna is no ordinary occasion. It represents the joining of two family dynasties. The ceremony and reception proceed without a hitch–until a crasher appears claiming to be a MacKenna guest. The disheveled and eccentric professor of medieval history warns that there’s “bad blood” between the couple’s clans, stemming from an ancient feud that originated in Scotland, and involving the Buchanan theft of a coveted MacKenna treasure.

Jordan has always led a cautious life and has used her intelligence and reason to become a successful businesswoman. So she is intrigued but skeptical of the professor’s claims that the feud has been kept alive by the grave injustices the Buchanans have perpetrated over the centuries. But when Noah Clayborne, a close family friend and a man who has never let a good time or a pretty girl pass him by, accuses Jordan of being trapped in her comfort zone, she determines to prove him wrong and sets out on a spontaneous adventure to the small, dusty town of Serenity, Texas, to judge the professor’s research for herself.

Maneuvering through a close-knit community in which everyone knows everyone else’s business, Jordan never anticipates the danger and intrigue that lie in her path, nor the threat that will shadow her back to Boston, where even in familiar surroundings, her life is at risk.

A powerful thug who rules by fear, a man who harbors a simmering secret, and an unexpected romance that pierces all defenses–beloved author Julie Garwood weaves these dazzling elements into a brilliant novel of romantic suspense. Shadow Dance is a searing tango of passion and peril.

2 out of 5 stars didn't even finish it.........2007-10-09

i am saddened to say that i couldn't finish the book. like many other avid jg readers i too waited with abated breath for noah's story and was quite disappointed that i couldn't even get past the first couple of chapters. it was pretty slow.. soo slow i felt no connection to the characters what so ever..
i couldn't give it just one star as it is jg, who has written my absolute most favorite book in the world.. the ransom.. so i gave it two stars just because i have faith that jg will come back with something better

5 out of 5 stars Shadow Dance - One Of Garwood's Best.......2007-09-29

Again Julie Garwood has enchanted me with one of her books about the Buchanan family. She has written another superb book that readers who appreciate romantic suspense will enjoy. Keep up your wonderful story telling.

2 out of 5 stars Julie...You REALLY Missed this Boat!.......2007-09-10

I have been eagerly awaiting Noah's story since Mercy, when it became obvious that he would be a recurring character. He is clearly a contemporary version of Cole Clayborne with his quick one-liners, witty charm, and undeniable way with the ladies. I was incredibly disappointed--actually a little heartbroken--to finally get my hands on Noah's story and find that he played second fiddle to a very dull Jordan Buchanan. In her previous contemporary novels, JG has done a thorough job of developing Noah as a likeable, believable, and all-around HOT character (although he is pretty slutty). After crafting such a solid foundation upon which to build Noah's potentially incredible story, Julie wasted him and all that his romance could have been with Shadow Dance. Noah was completely closed to the reader for most of the book. He was bland, unexciting, ordinary, and forgettable. I'm sad that Julie's readers will never get to witness the exciting romance that Noah could have had--with all of the charm, wit, temper, thunder and fight that I expected when he finally fell (in love). He didn't have to fight for a thing in this book. Pity. I was really hoping for some red-hot spark. What I found was much less. Poor Noah.

2 out of 5 stars Julie Garwood could do better.......2007-09-04

I have read and own everyone of Julie Garwood's books I love her she's one of my favorite authors her female heroins are always funny and have some odd characteristic that I love, but not this one she just seem like the runt of the family a family that always seem spirited and strong not week.I like the Buchanans triology and I always new Noah the Buchananas trusted best freind would get his own story but how sad for Noah it was a stale one......

5 out of 5 stars Shadow Dance.......2007-08-09

I loved reading any book by Julie Garwood. But getting to be updated about decendants of Cole from For the Roses was so great. I thought that this was an awesome read and could not put it down. I hope Julie continues to write about this amazing family in her future books.

3 out of 5 stars Neat book, not exactly what I thought it'd be........2007-06-13

I am a die hard Charmed fan and my daughter has recently through re-runs caught the bug,so I ordered this book for her birthday assuming it would be like the "Book of Shadows" on the show. I expected pictures and descriptions of demons and things and the spells they'd cast on the show. It did have some of the spells, and a lot of information on the wiccan religion but, not a demon or ghost in sight. While I find wicca interesting if I wanted a book about it I'd have ordered one on the subject. In it's favor if your'e interested in the craft or in behind the scenes information on the show you'd like the book but, it's not the companion book the title suggests.

5 out of 5 stars "Charming" book..........2007-05-20

I love this book. It has all sorts of information about Wicca, spells, and more and lots of interesting tid bits about the show "Charmed" that for a fan is really a plus!!!

4 out of 5 stars More about Wicca than "Charmed" .......2007-02-13

I think the book is fun to read, yet I wanted something that related more to the show. However, I have an interest in gemstones and the book goes into detail about the use of them as well as candles and herbs. So, it's interesting and fun, but may not be exactly what you want if you're more interested in the show.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-02-10

This is a really cool book has tidbits about the show and all the girls. If your a fan of the show Charmed. This is a must have for your collection.

2 out of 5 stars It's interesting.......2007-01-18

The book was more about wicca then the actually show. I bought it because I thought it was more show oriented. If wicca doesn't interest you I wouldn't buy it.

I had long been attracted to the image of the cover of this book with the glowing flower and the butterfly. When it came I couldn't wait to read it and look at it. There are so many wonderful tips in this book, one especially is about how to use analogous colors to change colors from light to dark without using complements. This book is beautiful and very helpful.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars No Technique - thin on using shadows for anything.......2007-04-04

Reviewer Joel (CA United States) is 100% correct: This book's description and all of the other reviews are completely misleading. The book is thin on content at this price range and doesn't even truly cover the subject of "Placing Shadows", and, other then building off of a foundation of the standard 3 point lighting system, it doesn't provide any techniques to do anything with shadows at all.

What it does provide is a good easily understood explanation of color and the measurable aspect of temperature along with definitions of the various existing light bulbs, their properties and color temperatures. But if you are at the stage where you're looking to buy a book to help you with using shadows then you should already know everything this book has to offer on this subject. And if not this isn't the book to get it from.

This book is not what I thought it would be as I was expecting some advanced knowledge on creatively using lights to create shadows that would enhance my productions. What I got was a rehash of the basics of illuminating a subject, with illumination as the key word.

If you want to learn lighting for video go get one of the lesser costing setup books that have page after page of diagrams of different sets and the various positions of where the lights should go.

This is not the book to help you learn about using shadow techniques to enhance your production as it is more a book about light bulbs and their color temperatures.

Oh, yeah, the second edition's cover is completely different and looks like a cheeply produced self published paperback book.

Now I have only one question: Where do I get a refund?

4 out of 5 stars Placing Shadows.......2005-12-21

Placing Shadows in an appropriate title for this book. Shadows are the 3rd dimension of lighting ignored by many video professionals. The book explains in depth, the spectrums and characteristics of different types of light. Most books don't go into these explanations except 400 level college video classes. By doing so, it gives a basis to go on to discussing the many assorted manufactures lights and their practical use. Not just hypothetical lighting situations, but actual sets, from office settings to exercise videos. Also acknowledging, every set is completely different and must be lit by what is necessary to create the look you need.
Additionally this book, described how to set up your monitor by using different color bars and using waveform monitors and vector scopes, something that many college graduates were never taught how to do, like ME! If a student learns and retains everything in this book you will be ahead of all you peers and will understand what is being done on a set when they're in the real world of video.

2 out of 5 stars Good info if you want to know how a light bulb is made........2003-08-26

I have a background in photography so using tungsten lighting is not new to me. I thought this book would have more technique then I was led to believe.

It does have some great info on how a light bulb is created and the various parts but is not very fulfilling. this book is not what I thought it would be like and
the reviews from others are misleading.

It goes over various lighting setups, any photography book covers this and skims over ratios. It explains color meters in short detail but it would be great to have more "meat" to hang on to then the author's bad grammar and old sayings. He suggests that you learn by doing. enough about his experiences, show me something I don't know how to do!

If you want to learn lighting for video, this is not the book to buy. If you want to learn about light bulbs and color tempatures of tungsten lights then this book delivers.

I give it a 2 stars because it does have some merit but not in the area of lighting technique. For a really thin book, its not worth the price even if you get a discount.

5 out of 5 stars Puts ligth on the life of beginers and pros.......2002-04-20

I belive this book can be very helpful for people who want to make films, either as a guide to create a nice looking product or as a general idea of how ligth works for the image, this book is a great begeaning in every cinematographer's career.

4 out of 5 stars Great introduction to "Art" of lighting........2001-11-10

As a beginning Videographer I found this book a great introduction to the many different lights and techniques used in obtaining good video. The book is also very current on what is available today. I feel it could have been a little more in-depth, but for the price and length I found it well worth buying and reading. The authors write in a very "readable" style that educates you but doesn't bore you. Highly recommended.

"Our scared and arrogant ego has an enormous capacity not to know itself," says Esalen Institute psychotherapist David Richo. The shadow self, the dark side of the personality, is hidden in the psyche. Others often see it, but we do not. As Jung says, "The shadow is the negative side of the personality, the sum of all those unpleasant qualities we like to hide, together with the insufficiently developed functions and the contents of the personal unconscious....[The shadow] also displays a number of good qualities such as normal instincts, appropriate reactions, realistic insights, creative impulses, etc." Richo has written an enormously useful book in which he introduces the reader to the conscious persona and the subconscious shadow. Unlike other practitioners, he includes conscious but negatively perceived traits in his definition of the dark side, plus undiscovered or unused positive traits. By helping the reader to befriend the shadow self instead of projecting it onto others in dysfunctional or destructive ways, the author performs a profound service, freeing emotional and creative resources through which we can manifest brighter, healthier lives. --P. Randall Cohan

Book Description

Our "shadow" is the collection of negative or undesirable traits we keep hidden—the things we don't like about ourselves or are afraid to admit: egotist, non-"PC" proclivities, forbidden sexual desires. But it also includes our positive, untapped potential—qualities we may admire in others but disavow in ourselves. Befriending the shadow makes fear an ally and enables us to live more authentically. It also automatically improves our interpersonal relationships, because we are freed from the need to project our own negativity onto others, and we become more acutely aware when theirs is projected onto us. David Richo looks for where the shadow manifests in personal life, family interaction, religion, relationship, and the world around is. He shows how to use the gentle practice of mindfulness to work with our shadow side, and he provides numerous exercises for going deeper. He is remarkably skillful at making the shadow concept not only easy to understand, but supremely practical for enhancing the quality of our lives.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars One of the BEST books I have ever read !!!.......2006-09-02

This book is excellent. I have read many self-improvement type books; most of them are written well but are superficial, or are deep and insightful, but are not written well at all. This book by Richio is the exception - it is well written AND very deep and insightful. The book is about recognizing the "shadow" element in us, bringing it to light, and then "befriending" it; that is, coming in terms with it and figuring out how to live a purposeful life despite our shortcomings. The perspective of the author is that of a Jungian psychologist with a slight Buddhist tinge. His analysis and explanations of why we act the way we do are right on target and I learned much from reading this book. The author has included several exercises at the end of each chapter, and almost all of them are very good and by going through them I learned many things about myself I did not know. While working through this book I kept a notebook, and wrote down several quotes from the book and wrote out all the exercises; altogether I wrote out about 250 pages! I found it best to go through this book very slowly, and don't rush through the exercises. I HIGHLY recommend this excellent and extremely insightful book, and I am very interested in reading more books by this author. If you are interested in doing your own self examination, buy this book now...you will gain many insights into your self, your hidden self, and the motivations which underlie your day to day behavior.

5 out of 5 stars Great book on applied Jungian theory!.......2004-05-20

This is an excellent book for self-exploration and self-development. It provides a thorough explanation of the concept of the shadow in Jungian theory and introduces us to various practical exercises to explore our own shadow. Though I'm not really a Jungian, this was a very interesting book that gave me lots to think about. If you'd like a more simplistic but nevertheless absolutely excellent explanation of the psyche, try reading "The Ever-Transcending Spirit" by Toru Sato. It is an amazing book that explains almost everything you wondered about in a concise and down to earth way! Five stars may not be enough for this one.

4 out of 5 stars Rough start, then it gets going...........2003-07-05

This book is typical of David Richo's work: pretty good. His writing is very very scholarly and intellectual. I often wish he'd step out of his head more often and more frequently share how what he's saying directly can effect me as a person. (For application of work presented here the reader might also want to read Susan Campbell's "Getting Real", as that would give you the skills to own your anger in the moment, for example). As a therapist, I often find that some clients know a lot about whats going wrong, but they need skill building to go along with the insight. He starts applying the shadow material, and the book really gets going, only at about page 150. I felt there was too much background material on how the shadow works, which leaves me afraid to offer this book to a client; Its boring in the beginning. All in all, its a really great expository work on Jungian theory and the Shadow, and he does a great job applying Shadow concepts to real life. I love how he frames projections, and I think this is one of the better works on understanding how projection works in our lives. From a theoretical perspective I learned a lot about the shadow and applications to other cultures and sometimes my own life. After reading this book I felt intellectually overwhelmed, tired, and smarter. Fundamentally a great scholarly work, even though not really a true self-help book.

2 out of 5 stars A bit disappointed.......2001-08-07

While I admire the author's sincerity, I found the writing to be bogged down with righteousness and preachiness. His writing relies more on quotes than speaking from the heart. I thought the exercises were useful and wished there were more of them. I had hoped for a much deeper and more personal exploration into my own Shadow.

5 out of 5 stars A Journey Within!.......2001-05-08

This book was very easy to understand and very clear. . Very helpful in helping understand what we are scared to admit or what we have denied, or just what we don't like about ourselves. It is a voyage into the lowest point of our souls and a manual for that voyage to our own wholeness or personhood. Anyone who is interested in getting at the core of their own darkness can't miss if they read Shadow Dance It is extremely uplifting with several positive ideas and agenda to assist in the renovation of our apparently negative traits and routine into something useful, by showing us the root of goodness within any dark trail within any of us. Having read the book , I am now eager to begin the practices suggested by the author .

5 out of 5 stars Great biography!.......2006-07-21

This book isn't just for Albert Salmi fans; it's for anyone who enjoys a good read. I read Sandra's second book first, "Plain Beautiful" the biography of Peggy Ann Garner, and decided to read about Albert Salmi, whom I'd never heard of, because I enjoyed the Peggy Ann book so much. I was surprised when I received the book that I recogzized Albert Salmi on the cover. And you will too. Salmi was a character actor in so many TV series from 1954 to 1989 that I'm sure just about anyone who watched TV during that period would recognize his face.

Sandra knows how to write a great biography. A lot of research obviously went into this work and it shows. It reads as a refreshing piece of literature, not like a history lesson. And over 70 photos are spread throughout the book (not a center section containing a few photos)which means there are photos on over a third of the pages of the book!

Albert Salmi's memoirs are woven into the story almost as if he and Sandra sat down and wrote this biography together. I highly recommend this book and look forward to the next biography by this author.

5 out of 5 stars A Gripping Story of an Actor's Life.......2005-11-16

Sandra Grabman's biography about an actor whose face most know but not his name, brings him to life like a long lost friend. Albert Salmi was seen on TV time and again from the 1950s through the 1980s, but nothing, to my knowledge, was written about him. You don't have to be a fan to enjoy this book. The book stands on its own as an interesting account of the life of an actor born to immigrant parents from Finland. Of particular interest to me was his early career as a stage actor in New York, his early training, and award winning performances before he migrated to Hollywood for television roles, primarily to support his family.

Salmi died a tragic death in 1990 and what makes this book so poignant is that Grabman uses Salmi's own handwritten memoirs, which he obviously planned to publish one day, but never finished. Grabman finished it for him, explaining and filling in facts from many interviews with his family and friends. Her sympathetic treatment enlightens the reader to Salmi's emotional turmoil intensified by his second wife, Roberta, who brutally abused his daughters, especially his daughter from his first wife, actress Peggy Ann Garner. Grabman is almost too kind to Roberta in her objectivity as a biographer and her consideration of family members. She merely gives the facts for the reader to discern. Grabman gives the reader much more to remember Salmi by, rather than a shocking Hollywood tragedy riddled with rumors.
A page-turner from page one, this book is an easy and entertaining read.

5 out of 5 stars The quintessential biography of Albert Salmi........2005-08-07

Albert Salmi (1928-1990) appeared in about 60 movies, and had over 100 TV guest appearances. Albert was a truly great professional -- the consummate actor. Albert would appear on Broadway in some famous plays, such as "Bus Stop" and "End as a Man."

When Albert decided to make the transition from stage to screen, Albert was offered an Oscar nomination as Best Supporting Actor for his first movie, "The Brothers Karamazov" (1958), for which the studio wanted to nominate him for an Oscar. He told them no. Why? Read the book to find out. Albert would go on to appear in many movies, and TV shows, in the following decades.

His first marriage, to Peggy Ann Garner, ended in divorce; they had a daughter named Catherine Ann Salmi, or Cas for short. Alb's 2nd marriage, to Roberta Pollock, was rocky; they had 2 daughters, Lizanne and Jenny, but Albert discovered later that Roberta had been severely abusing Cas and one of her own daughters. Nevertheless, the book tells us that she did many things right, too -- helped him achieve peace and quiet so he could learn his lines, brought the children to visit him when he was working on location, filled in for him at a White House reception, arranged a teaching job for him during his semi-retirement, etc.

Later in his life, in his fifties, Albert felt that he had been abandoned by Hollywood. Albert used his vast knowledge of acting to teach young students. Sandra Grabman interviewed dozens of his co-stars, friends, neighbors, and family members for this book. Best of all are excerpts, throughout the book, of Albert's own handwritten memoirs telling us about the happenings of his life. Sandra Grabman's book is the quintessential biography of Albert Salmi.

3 out of 5 stars An interesting study of a great character actor.......2005-07-12

This was an interesting biography. Concise and easy to read. The author did a great job gathering source material. I really enjoyed reading it, but I felt there was an inherent bias in the last few chapters. The book paints the actor to be something greater than what he was. There is never a justification for spousal abuse or murder, and I felt the book weighed too heavily with criticism of Al's wife. It was a tragic situation, and I would have preferred a more unbiased view of Roberta. However, it's definitely worth reading!

5 out of 5 stars Just great!.......2005-07-07

I only wish more bios like this would be written. These days, bios of Hollywood personalities are usually laden with sordid details of typical stardom - sudden success, decline into alcoholism, divorce, more alcoholism, giving birth to kids who get into drugs, 12-step program, and BOOM! Now the celebrity is happy at age 65. Unfortunately, Albert Salmi wasn't able to complete his journey...but what a life this guy had. And a happy one at that. Anecdotes from Hollywood actors, plus a great many excerpts from Salmi's unpublished memoirs, are splendid. I hope Ms. Grabman writes many more books.

What Lurks in the Dark Shadows of the Heart?

Most men who see Amanda Charles dance worship her from afar. But one "admirer" is getting too close to the glamorous showgirl...perilously close. The looks, style, and grace that make Amanda sparkle on stage have now made her something else: the target of a serial killer.

Detective Tristan MacLaughlin has drawn the case that is pulling him deep into a world of pageantry and dazzle -- and closer to the stunning, violet-eyed beauty who keeps her secrets and emotions locked tightly inside. Tristan never thought he'd be bewitched by Amanda's charms, never though he'd care. And he never imagined that by wanting her, by trying to protect her, he'd place her in the gravest danger of all.

2 out of 5 stars Enough with the Scottish brogue already.......2007-03-22

Amanda is a "classy" Reno showgirl who has been targeted by the "Showgirl Slayer" who has already killed several area showgirls. Tristan MacLaughlin - a Scottish transplant to Seattle is sent to Reno to head a task force to find the killer, and although they constantly clash, he eventually has eyes for Amanda, despite his misgivings about her career choice. Will he find the killer in time to save the lass he has come to love?

One of Andersen's earlier romantic suspense novels, it is actually not that great. It took forever for the romance to emerge, and frankly the character of Tristan and his Scottish brogue are so annoying that he grates on your nerves. It was a chore to finish this story. Her later comic romances are so much better, but she does have a cache of great romantic suspense novels (such as "Obsession"), this just isn't one of them.

4 out of 5 stars Reprint: It is a debut book.......2005-06-27

I loved this early book of Ms Andersen. I was not disappointed. Amanda and Tristan were opposite characters but made for each other, both were interesting. Amanda was a gorgeous dancer, beautiful and fascinating, Tristan was not the same old hero.
I gave it four stars because I like my suspenses fast. I think the story line is a little bit slow paced yet terrific. There were some steriotype sections in this book which were drawbacks, however I like Ms Andersen's work and I'll keep reading her books.

1 out of 5 stars Just Too Dull.......2005-05-06

I liked the fact that romance was blended with mystery, or "thriller" as this book was classified, and that part was fine, but honestly, I struggled to finish this book, it was that dull. And with the way Tristan was described, I could never get a handle on who this guy was or what he was supposed to look like. I never got the feeling he was anything more than an old beef-cake with little brain. I just couldn't picture him as a handsome guy with a nice body. In my opinion, the author failed to convey this to the reader.

2 out of 5 stars Parts were okay, but was SO boring.......2005-05-06

There were so many boring sections in this book I almost put it down, but the few interesting scenes kept me from doing so. It had a lot of potential and I thought Amanda was a great girl, very lovely and sweet, but Tristan was a different story. I found it hard to get to know this guy.

    5 out of 5 stars Great read!.......2003-10-12

This was a great read from start to finish! I enjoy this authors work and this story developed great. The characters are strong, the plot moves swiftly and there is just the right amount of sizzle to make you wish for your very own "body guard".

The classic plays of the quintessential Dublin playwright

Three early plays by Sean O'Casey--arguably his three greatest--demonstrate vividly O'Casey's ability to convey the reality of life and the depth of human emotion, specifically in Dublin before and during the Irish civil war of 1922-23, but, truly, throughout the known universe. In mirroring the lives of the Dublin poor, from the tenement dwellers in The Shadow of a Gunman and Juno and the Paycock to the bricklayer, street vendor, and charwoman in The Plough and the Stars, Sean O'Casey conveys with urgency and eloquence the tiny details that create a total character as well as the terrors, large and small, that the constant threat of political violence inevitably brings. As Seamus Heaney has written, "O'Casey's characters are both down to earth and larger than life . . . His democratic genius was at one with his tragic understanding, and his recoil from tyranny and his compassion for the oppressed were an essential--as opposed to a moral and thematic--part of his art."

A new production of Juno and the Paycock will transfer from the Donmar Theatre in London to New York in September 2000.

4 out of 5 stars CHOCKY AR LA (OUR TIME WILL COME).......2007-07-23

The history of Ireland is replete with `times of troubles', no question about that. The particular ` time of troubles' that the master Anglo- Irish socialist playwright Sean O'Casey takes on in these three classic and best known of his plays is the time from the Easter Uprising in 1916 to the time of the lesser known Civil War battles between Free Staters and die-hard Republicans in 1921-22. Needless to say they were all classified as tragedies by O'Casey. What qualified O'Casey to do much more than provide yeoman's cultural service to this period? Well, for one he helped organize the famous James Connolly-led Irish Citizen's Army that took part in the heroic Easter Uprising in 1916. For another, O'Casey was a true son of the Dublin tenements where the action of the three plays takes place. He KNEW the `shawlie' environment and the language of despair, duplicity and treachery that is the lot of the desperately poor. Finally, as an Anglo- Irishman he had that very fine ear for the English language that we have come to cherish from the long line of Irish poets and playwrights who have graced our culture. That said, please read about this period in Irish history but also please read these plays if you want to put that history in proper perspective- in short, to understand why the hell the British had to go then from Ireland. Below are capsule summaries of the three plays.

Juno and the Paycock- the Boyles, the central characters in this play, have benefited from the creation of the Free State but at a cost, namely the incapacity of their son. Their daughter has seemingly better prospects, but that will remain to be seen. The device that holds this play together is the hope of good fortune that allegedly is coming under the terms of a relative of Captain Boyle's will. The ebb and flow of events around that fortune drives the drama as does the fickleness of the tenement crowd who gather to `benefit' from it. There is also a very lively and, from this distance, seemingly stereotyped camaraderie between the Captain and his `boyo' Joxer.

The Shadow of a Gunman- the gun has always played, and continues to play, an important part in the Irish liberation struggle. That premise was no different in 1920 than it is today. Whether the gun alone, in the absence of a socialist political program, can create the Workers Republic that O'Casey strove for is a separate question. What is interesting here is what happens, literally, when by mistake and misdirection, a couple of free-floating Irish males of indeterminate character and politics are assumed to be gunmen but are not. It is not giving anything in the play away to state that the real heroine of this action is a woman, Minnie, who in her own patriotic republican way takes the situation as good coin. The Minnies of this world may not lead the revolution but you sure as hell cannot have one without them (and their preparedness to sacrifice).

The Plough and the Stars- There was a time when to even say the words plough and stars brought a little tear to this reviewer's eye. Well he is a big boy now but the question posed here between duty to the liberation struggle in 1916 and its consequences on the one hand and, for lack of a better word, romance and family life on the other is still one to be reckoned with. That it had such tragic consequences for the young tenement couple Jack and Nora only underlines the problem of love and war in real life, as on the stage.

4 out of 5 stars Highlights of Irish Theatre.......2004-02-07

Sean O'Casey was something of an anomaly on the Irish literary scene in the early 20th Century. While his fellow artistes (extra e being intentional) were lofty in their ideals and flowery in their language, writing often in rhyme or blank verse, O'Casey was very much the man of the people. Yeates, Synge and Beckett were concerned with ideals, classical parallells, celtic revival and universality while O'Casey painted the life of the working classes.

In that regard O'Casey holds a lot in common with Russian writers of the period, and with marxist treatments. But in the Holy Catholic Ireland of his day he was viewed with suspicion by the authorities and with contempt by the artistic aristocracy.

So it is somewhat fitting that the three plays in this book have more to say about the period than most of the "great" contemporary Irish works of the day. Certainly they have become far more popular and remain accessible to many people both thorough professional and amateur productions.

For me, O'Casey is at his best when he is in the tenament room with the ordinary people, and this is what makes Juno and the Paycock the most enjoyable of these plays. Layabout workshy men supported on the backs of strong hard women are as universal a theme you can get, but it is a theme made funny and poignant by O'Casey.

The Plough and the Stars is a milestone portrayal of the events of the Easter Rising on the ordinary people of Dublin, for whom the events were a frightening irrelevance that pulled them out of their daily struggle with hunger into a greater struggle for freedom and nationality. This turning point is captured with sheer brilliance by O'Casey, but it is left up to the theater producer to maximise it, and I have seen good and really horrendous productions of this work.

All three are excellent plays. Important works, not only in an Irish context, but giving voices to the disadvantaged in any society.
