Great recipes.......2007-03-31
I have a stovetop smoker and wanted a book that could help me with more recipes than just the few I received with the smoker. This book is a great resource and I have enjoyed using it. My very favorite things to cook in the smoker right now are potatoes. EXCELLENT!
Smokin: Recipes for smoking ribs, salmon, chicken, mozzerella, and more with your stovetop smoker.......2007-02-26
Good book. Recipes are straightforward and easy to follow.
Cheerful Guide to Smoking Food.......2007-01-22
Styler has an upbeat, cheerful & encouraging approach to smoking food that makes you want to put everything you have in the frige in your smoker. The basic recipes at the back are the best part.
Must Have Book With a Cameron Smoker.......2007-01-19
Along with the Cameron Smoker I bought my husband for Christmas, I also purchased this book. Great ideas for smoking foods and some yummy recipes. It's easy to understand and the recipes we've tried have been delicious.
Healthy & Tasty Year Around Cooking.......2006-09-21
This is style that is not that hard and due to stovetop adaptation, one can have the healthy benefits as well as unique smokin' flavor. This aid and recipe collection will aid that immensely.
Styler was on FoodNetwork showing this off, caught my eye and appetite. He has great recipe breath here: even scrambled eggs and soups and salads, to what one typically associates with smoking: ribs, sausage, chicken, fish, etc. Favorites thus far include: Smoked Salmon Pate; Phyllo Pastry Tartletts with Smoked Shrimp and Spinach Filling; Turkey-Mushroom Barley Soup; Tea-Smoked Duck with Asian Slaw; Tea-Smoked Shrimp and Asparagus Stir-Fry.
Only way to make this even more exceptional and useful would be "sources" listing and color photos. The latter would certainly heighten the price.

GREAT BOOK.......2007-06-19
When I receievd my book I started to read it right away. I really like the way this book is written. Very encouraging. It has little sayings in it that help you get your mind in the right place. It doesnt focus on just one way to quit it gives you several ideas and ways to think abot it. I let my aunt read it and she let her friend read it and it just kept getting passed around. From everyone who has read this book that I know love it. I actually have no idea who has my book right now. So many people have passed it around I forget who has it now. I recommend this book to anyone who is trying break the habit. This book has helped alot of people I know. It is worth reading!!!!
Have an open mind............2007-02-15
I do recommend it. It can be repetitious. I think they repeat a lot to get it through our thick skulls!
In the beginning of the book I was like this is not helping me, but once I got about half way through I starting feeling better.
Huh.......2006-12-07
Not much help for quitting.
If you went through the program and didn't get it, you'll be lost.

Returning book immediately.......2006-05-03
I ordered this book hoping to find some good recipes for BBQing but instead I found a book that would you give part of the recipe and then you need the secret ingredient, cookshack's rib rub. Most of the recipes require you to order different types of rubs from cookshack instead of giving you the information needed to make the rub.
Disappointing at best............2001-08-07
I purchased a Cookshack smoker over 5 years ago and have experimented with it off and on. While I realize that barbeque is more art than science, I have been frustrated by the lack of information on just how much wood to use with particular recipes. I pre-ordered this book in anticipation of learning some secrets and tricks in the use of the Cookshack smoker. I waited for more than a month for delivery of the book and upon receipt of it, I eagerly delved into it looking for answers to my many questions. To my great disappointment, this book offered absolutely no information that I hadn't learned from trial and error. How much wood should I use? The book suggests that I consult the Cookshack Operator's Manual. There are some general guidelines but the guidelines don't tell you what amount of wood works best with what amount of food. Although I have had some delicious food from the Cookshack, if I am cooking for guests, I use my Brinkmann smoker as I am more confident that the food will be cooked to perfection. The water smoker takes longer, but is more forgiving than the sealed, dry smoking Cookshack. People who like to smoke fish will find 48 pages of recipes. If you prefer beef or pork, the list is much smaller, 16 and 15 pages respectively. There are also small sections dedicated to sausages, lamb and game. In short, this is a book that should have been a digest for Cookshack owners and prospective buyers. At best, it is a generic guide for smoking recipes. It doesn't promote the product line and it isn't a worthwhile choice for anyone new to smoking foods.

Barbecue is not about grilling food fast over high heat. That's something else, delicious in its own right, but something else entirely. Barbecue is about marginal cuts of meat (for the most part), about smoke, about fires burning so low and slow you hardly ever see the flicker of a flame. Barbecue is about succulent pork ribs as dark as sin just falling off the bone and dripping with glorious sweet pork godliness. Or enjoying the effects that 12 to 18 hours of smoking has on beef brisket.
The trick is, how do you do it? How do you master a cooking technique all but ignored in favor of fast and hot? The answer lies in Smoke & Spice. Authors Jamison and Jamison provide all the information you're ever going to need to run a real barbecue. Tips and techniques abound on every page--accompanied with countless recipes that stretch the barbecue imagination. And seeing that one cannot live on barbecue alone (though that's a challenge well worth considering) there are just as many recipes included for all the good food that accompanies barbecue--from Scalloped Green Chile Potatoes to South-of-the-Border Garlic Soup to Buttermilk Onion Rings and even Bourbon Peaches. If smoke in your eyes makes your mouth water, this is the primer for you! --Schuyler Ingle
Book Description
300-plus recipes. The only cookbook devoted to smoke-cooked barbecue, a hot trend.
Customer Reviews:
Great book with a lot of great ideas and recipes.......2007-08-07
This is a great book on smoking. It has great tips and recipes. Highly recommended for new and existing cooks who want to use smokers. We tried getting this type of information online and it just takes to long and the information is incomplete. This book fills in the gaps and doesn't leave you wondering.
Excellent book.......2007-07-17
A lot of recipes and very detailed information. A must have!!!
My only suggestion would be to dedicate a whole chapter to setting up the fire. There is no info about it in the book.
I think any barbecue book is incomplete without helping the user setup and maintain the temperature. I mean, this is not an oven where you can set it and forget it. Maintaining 200F in a smoker is a talent I think.
Impractical.......2007-07-09
Most of the recipes are too elaborate-- too many ingredients-- too much preparation time. This was a disappointment.
Winter reading and Summer smoking.......2007-07-06
Smoke & Spice makes you want to smoke something year round. You will catch yourself actually reading this cookbook and following it to the letter--then guarding your secret recipe! In the South we use hickory. After reading Smoke & Spice, you'll want to try every hardwood in the forest.
Smoked Foods.......2007-07-03
This cook book was great in helping a newcomer to a smoker. It's a great guide to how to use a smoker and how to smoke different foods.
Book Description
"I accepted the certainty of my untimely death with gallows humor and a calculator. I'd read somewhere that each cigarette you smoke knocks seven minutes off your time on the planet. To amuse myself, I did the math: 153,000 cigarettes = two years of my life, up in smoke."
Julia Hansen first lit up at nineteen. Twenty years later, she was editing books about health -- and smoking a pack or two a day. She denied her son fast food, but smoked in the house and car; curtailed his video games, but lit up at his soccer matches. Despite repeated attempts to quit, she always crawled back to her beloved menthol lights. Smoking had become a metaphorical chain around her neck, shackling her to an early death.
Haunted by a nightmarish vision of her future -- her son at her deathbed, begging her not to leave him -- Hansen devised a drastic quit method. She bought a 72-foot length of chain that was "unwieldy as a corpse" and locked herself to a radiator in her dining room. What followed: seven days of cold-turkey misery, comic absurdity, and revelation as Hansen stepped from behind her wall of smoke to face her addiction to nicotine -- and some painful truths.
Clanking around her house like Marley's ghost, white-knuckling cravings, and struggling to understand tobacco's unyielding grip on her, Hansen confronted her life in smoke: fractured relationships, lifelong battles with alcohol and depression, and a profound sense of emptiness. On day 1, the chain was her addiction to nicotine, each link a story about cigarettes and self-loathing. By day 7, it had revealed its ringing, rattling truth -- that every smoker has a story, and it always centers on clinging to a comfort that can kill you. In the end, Hansen's story was painfully simple: She smoked to survive her life. And then, to save it, she quit.
Fierce and funny, honest and utterly absorbing, A Life in Smoke is Julia Hansen's evocative and inspiring account of the extreme measures she took to quit smoking -- decidedly not recommended by the medical profession.
Customer Reviews:
Many themes great book.......2007-09-05
I loved this book. There are so many life lessons that all hum into one beautiful book.
Great read.......2007-01-08
Wow! As a Respiratory Therapist, I work with people everday who are suffering the debilitating pulmonary effects of years of smoking. Most of my patients want to quit and just can't. From a scientific point of view I can understand how difficult it is to quit but I never thought about the emotional hold smoking has on people until I read "A Life in Smoke".
I was hoping that Julia's book would help me obtain some insight of how my patients feel about their smoking and their many failed attempts to quit. It did just that. I never realized the intimate friendship that people have with their cigarettes and what a important part of their survival those cigarettes are. I believe the book helped me to become more understanding, more empathetic and less judgemental. I'm going to recommend it to all of my co-workers.
Understanding smokers.......2007-01-01
For the first time, I have a glimpse into what it's like to be a smoker and why they do it. I've never understood the call of cigarettes--the few times I've tried one, I haven't felt a 'rush' or anything compelling me to have another, just a smokey icky taste in the mouth. Julia Hansen's tales of smoking and how she used the habit as a way to keep people and emotions at bay touched me deeply. There's a twist at the end that's both not surprising and disappointing, but you'll have to read it. An author who has found her voice, I hope she writes more.
Try, try, try again.......2006-12-12
As an avid never smoked non-smoker, my eyes were opened to the complexities of trying to break this one little habit. I have much more respect for my friends and family members that have accomplished this feat through the years. Hats off to Julia for not letting past defeats lessen her determination. This book is a thumbnail view into the highs and lows of her very interesting life. It is a great read for anyone interested in how other people handle everyday life.
A Life in Smoke: A Memoir.......2006-12-02
Fantastic Read! I found this to be a completely heartfelt realistic view of the life of a smoker trying to quit. The tongue-in-cheek humor actually comes across as a coping mechanism instead of snarky storytelling. It is easy to find yourself truly caring about this person and wanting them to succeed!

Do you want to quit smoking, but your fear of weight gain is stopping you? Or did you already quit smoking, and you're carrying unwanted pounds? True, the average smoker who quits gains 4.5 pounds. Some gain nothing, many gain 4 to 8 pounds, and very few gain up to 20 pounds. (After 10 years, however, ex-smokers weigh the same as people who have never smoked.) The How to Quit Smoking and Not Gain Weight Cookbook explains the relationship between weight changes and smoking, how your health will benefit if you quit, how to start eating better before you quit, how to replace what you get from tobacco after you quit, and how to cope with food cravings. You get a personal nutrition plan, plus practical content about exercise, snacking, restaurant eating, and motivation. The strategies are easy to put into action, with self-tests, "scripts" (how you talk to yourself), and checklists to help you personalize the program. The book presents 100 recipes with the nutritional breakdown of each recipe and "health check" notes explaining the nutritional and other benefits of the ingredients. This will be a handy resource for a new or veteran ex-smoker, and a motivating invitation to quit for someone who smokes for weight control. --Joan Price

Nice info; fake sympathy.......2001-06-22
This book contains good information about the science behind nicotine addition. For someone sincerly trying to quit, it's useful - if you can get past the pedantic "sure it's hard, but aren't you worth it?" tone. Recipes are good.
I'm using their plan, and it's great.......2000-01-06
This book has been immensely helpful in my attempt to quit smoking. It's only been 3 weeks, but I'm feeling lucky to have made it so far. Without the common sense guidelines & advice from this book, I doubt I would have made it through the first week.
It's a clear, concise, and factual approach to quitting smoking & staying smoke-free. The menu plans make sense, and are easy to follow. The recipes are great - haven't tried them all yet, but those I've had are delicious.
The information on nutritional values & supplements are also great. There's a lot to think about & take into consideration when you stop smoking, and the authors explain the rationale for managing each type of nutrient.
and as an added bonus, i've even lost 2 pounds =]
Great resource to understand and cope with food cravings........1999-11-20
Are you smoking to avoid weight gain? If so, you are not alone. Forty percent of female smokers found do so as a way to manage their weight--25% would like to stop smoking but continue to do so because of fear of weight gain. In addition, 55% of female smokers report that they have little to no confidence that weight control is possible without the use of nicotine.
This book challenges conventional beliefs about smoking and weight, and is packed full of strategies for preparing to leave cigarettes in your past. The truth is, there may be a small initial rise in weight in the months immediately after quitting smoking, but in the long run, ex-smokers have NOT been proven to gain weight after quitting.
The authors of this book have created a series of self-assessments to evaluate your "smoking personality", or root reasons nicotine consumption can be a positive behavior. Is it habit? Or biochemistry? Each possibility will need a different approach. Once you know, you can use one of the many strategies provided to reduce the need for nicotine and greatly improve the chances of permanent success at quitting.
In my experience, understanding the cause for a behavior is always the starting point for changing that behavior; Donkersloot and Ferry do an outstanding job of building the foundation for kicking one of the most potent addictions known to man. And they don't stop there! The second half of the book is menus, recipes, and step-by-step strategies, so detailed and practical that if you REALLY want to quit, there is something for everyone who reads this book. There is nothing else like it currently available, which is why I highly recommend it as a must read.

After nimbly sidestepping any and all lawsuits for more than four decades, the tobacco industry received what could prove to be a mortal blow when Merrell Williams, a Louisville paralegal, stole thousands of pages of confidential documents from the law firm where he worked and handed them over to Michael Moore, the attorney general of Mississippi. These confidential documents proved that the Brown & Williamson Tobacco Corporation, a client of the firm, knew the dangers associated with smoking cigarettes, and that they had lied repeatedly to the public about the risks. Once these documents were released via the Internet and numerous anonymous mailings, the blood was in the water. A coalition of 65 top American trial lawyers attacked the tobacco industry from one side, while Moore and 39 other states' attorneys general pounced from the other, eventually resulting in a $368 billion settlement--the largest in American history. The People Vs. Big Tobacco: How the States Took on the Cigarette Giants is a blow-by-blow account of how the "Mother of All Lawsuits" was eventually settled, who the major players were, and what the settlement actually means for the future of Big Tobacco. The lawsuit settlement has since been railed by many health organizations and policymakers as a sellout, but there is no doubt that the tobacco industry has been permanently altered. Though more big-league legal wrangling is sure to come, The People Vs. Big Tobacco is an excellent analysis of the battle as it currently stands.
Book Description
Memphis, Tennessee, 1993. Attorney Michael Lewis looks into the emaciated face of his friend, a lifelong smoker dying of cancer, and resolves that something has to change -- Big Tobacco must be held accountable for the human and financial wreckage their products leave behind.
Four years later, Mississippi Attorney General Mike Moore stands at his microphone in the ballroom of the ANA Hotel in Washington, DC, and announces to the nation that Big Tobacco has just conceded the most gigantic legal settlement in the history of the world -- $368.5 billion. As Moore outlines the points of the plan, it is clear that America's relationship with tobacco is about to be transformed forever. Sweeping changes in the regulation and marketing of cigarettes and smokeless tobacco are about to take place; the companies will pay heavily for their lies, denials, and evasions. Joe Camel and the Marlboro Man will never again woo another teenager...
For the first time, the facts behind the scorching of Big Tobacco are woven into a single investigative narrative. Written in the fast-paced, riveting style of A Civil Action by a reporting team positioned -- from the beginning -- inside the frame with key players from all sides of the legal battleground, The People vs. Big Tobacco lets readers become insiders themselves in one of the most amazing social and financial dramas of our century.

Unidimensional tripe.......1998-07-02
A patchwork quilt of Bloomberg dispatches, slightly less biased than USAToday's coverage of the situation. Examine the heavy predominance of trial attorney and AG sources in the "Notes" section, compare the lack of industry source material (aside from public pronouncements). Nearly 20% of the book is a simple re-print of the settlement agreement itself.

Great.......2007-06-02
I read this book 5 years ago and quit. I'm buying a few copies for some friends. There was one person's story, in particular, that really stuck with me and over the years, I've thought about it many times. The book is a bit dated, but I think still worth reading.
Good information, but outdated........2002-01-29
Just finished this book this morning. It was very interesting reading the stories and I in fact stopped smoking 3 days ago. But...the stories seemed outdated and talked about a lot of people smoking in offices and homes, etc. You don't see that much these days. Plus, knowing the book was published in 1991, I subconciously added 10 years to the age of everyone in each story and that made me think "I wonder if they stayed quit?" The last section of the book after the stories is very repetitive. "As so-and-so said on page xxx...." seems to be in every other sentence.
I'd recommend reading it still, but better if you can borrow a copy or get it from the local library.
Good luck on quitting!
Made the Last Puff a reality.......2000-05-31
Simply put, this book and its disarmingly straightforward approach to quitter support gave me the final incentive and push to beat smoking. As I read this book, I found my resolve and courage rising until I was able to make that final decision to quit smoking... and then move on with my life. There is no proselytizing, no scary statistics, or dire predictions of painful death, but hope and encouragement from those who have been in the trenches beside you... as you struggle to take that Last Puff.
Excellent advice, all stories smokers can relate to........1999-05-01
Great book! To me quitting smoking was a very lonley feeling, especially since after I quit it seemed like everywhere I looked or everyone I knew was smoking. Most books tell you how to prepare to quit, This book helps you for after the quitting and plus! Most of the stories are about how they started, all the failures and how they finally quit but everyone can relate to the addiction thing! Buy this book!
