Book Description
Tactics of the Crescent Moon comes none too soon for deployed U.S. service personnel. Little, if any, of their battlefield intelligence has been tactically interpreted. U.S. analysts are generally more interested in the enemy's strategic or technological capabilities. Even if those analysts did want to tactically assess the information, most lack the infantry and historical background to do so. This book fills that void. It revealsfor the first time in any detailthe most common small-unit maneuvers of the Iraqi and Afghan resistance fighters. Its author is a retired infantryman and recognized authority on guerrilla warfare. He has traveled the world extensively and still trains active-duty U.S. units.
Tactics of the Crescent Moon could save many lives (if not turn the tide of war) in the Middle East. It is a heavily researched, well-illustrated, and spell-binding account of how Muslim militants fight. While the book delves mainly into their tactical method, it also uncovers their cultural orientation. This nail-biting nonfiction covers events as recent as 15 September 2004.

Understand what we're up against.......2007-02-27
If you want to truly understand how difficult it is to fight and win in the Middle East, then this book is required reading. Far too often we get watered-down information out of the press and on the Internet but the tactics of our Eastern adversaries go unmentioned. We know of suicide bombs, but where did this tactic originate? Which group in the Middle East is the most proficient at close-range combat? Where does Al Qaeda excel and what is the role of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard? Are Sunni and Shia groups always adversaries, or will they work together when faced with a common enemy?
This book gives countless examples of diffent tactics in different areas of the world from Afghanistan to Chechnya to the Levant. It illustrates the strengths of our adversaries and addresses our own weaknesses as a "Western" army. Finally, Poole makes recommendations on how we can win this fight through better light infantry tactics and restrained use of preparatory fire and air power.
It is in my opinion the best book yet on this "4th Generation" warfare. It is an outstanding read and will make you an expert amongst your friends when discussing the current state of military affairs in the Middle East.
After reading this book I sent it to my old ROTC school.......2006-11-28
I would highly encourage any person who is Battalion staff or lower to read this book. All Army and Marine personnel should read this book on the jet flying them to Iraq or Afghanistan. This book will give a typical soldier or marine a good snap shot of how the Eastern combat mind thinks. Also, unlike much propaganda to the contrary, the Islamic soldiers fight using Eastern techniques. There is more hand-to-hand fighting than in the past. American's just can't call in their massive fire support because the targets may not be easy to hit.
This book is great for privates, sergeants, lieutenants, and captains. I don't know if the advice will be taken if it's read at the level of battalion or above. That is where the "rubber no longer meets the road". The staff disconnect from the soldiers begins.
For all war fighters this book is a must read. All ROTC departments, Marine, and Army infantry should have this book as required reading.
A must read for those who leave the wire.......2006-11-21
During seven months in Falluja in 2005 I spent approximately 150 days in the city. The history alone in this book showed us just how much we may have been underestimating our enemies, and that if they followed their classical influences they could have done much more damage.
The history is priceless dating back to influences of the Samarai and how it came to bring the original Middle Eastern assassins, and how today's suicide bombers are like those in the past, only they have explosives instead of knives, and do not need as much skill.
John Poole had spent close to 30 years in the Marine Corps leading men as both a gunnery sergeant (when enlisted) and a Lt Colonel (when commissioned). He saw Vietnam first hand, and left feeling that he could have done more for the men he'd led. Although the officers that are in charge of teaching battle field skills are not fast to accept his methods the men on the ground who deal with the enemies in the streets of Iraqi cities know he is right.
Timely and practical.......2006-11-10
As a retired military officer, I think highly of Poole's books, including this one - he provides practical information that could save lives if they were required reading for our troops being sent to Iraq and Afghanistan.
All warfighters should read this.......2006-09-15
This book should be read by a variety of folks that desire to understand even a little bit more about what is happening and happening to US in the middle east. It is not a book that spends countless pages complaining about the state of union. This book will enable the tip of the spear as we are so fond of referring to our fighting forces, concise and credible information with regard to the mindset of their opposing forces. I have been told over and over, that you cannot defeat an opponent unless you understand how he/she thinks. It does shed some light on how the military-industrial complex is steering the people of many countries wrong by proposing extensive, expensive weapon systems that separate the men from the battle and advertise a zero loss of life war for our side. (Both sides should just throw rocks, it'll be simpler) And above all it mentions the one issue that is generating higher and higher turnover rates, ARMCHAIR war fighters, and the military personnel system, that rewards compliance and not innovation, that condones individualist and fails to properly reward teamwork. Battles should be fought from front to back and not the reverse as we are doing. I recommend this book to all, and not just to those in uniform.

Rugged and captivating, he fills her nights with desire...but by day, Diana is plagued with doubts. Adam clearly knows more than he's telling, but is his aim to protect her or distract her? 3 1/2 Stars.......2007-08-15
Diana Malone goes to New Orleans to study wolves...particularly werewolves...in the Bayou.
She meets Adam Ruelle (who was just STRANGE). His family was cursed to become werewolves, etc.
Adam was...weird. And I don't mean that in a good way. LOL
Diana moving into that delapidated house in the bayou was just odd to me.
Not one of my favorite's but introduces an important character in this book that will get her own book...so a necessary read if you are following the series.
Immensely entertaining!.......2006-08-19
As a lover of the Handeland series, I was not disappointed in Crescent Moon, the fourth installment in the series. Widow/Cryptozoologist Diana has been hired to hunt a wolf in New Orleans, where a series of deaths have been occurring. Trying desperately to hold on to the belief that her late husband was not insane, and that he really saw the things that he said he did, she sets out to solve the mystery of "who or what is killing people and why"? Once a reknown person in his field of study, the academic community now shuns her husband and has labeled him "crazy" because he believes in werewolves, and died while trying to prove it. Could werewolves and monsters be real? In order to find out, Diana heads into the swamps of New Orleans to solve the mystery.
Crescent Moon has everything a romance/paranormal fan would want....a sexy/mysterious tracker/guide who is possibly cursed, and who also appears to be helping to capture the evil wolf (or he is simply protecting the wolf, that he is), while solving several and lots of murders. You also realize, halfway through the novel, that Diana will make a wonderful addition to the Jager-Suchers organization.
A different take on the paranormal romance.......2006-08-13
Like Handeland's earlier works, I enjoyed this book. It is always jarring for me initially because most of the paranormal romance/suspense books I read portray the werewolves as the heros or heroines. Not so with Handeland and I like the refreshing twist. This book wasn't as good for me as some of her earlier ones but I will give her the benefit of the doubt and figure that had more to do with me as a reader than her as a writer. Nevertheless, I did like the book and have liked her previous books a great deal. I will continue to buy Handeland's books.
A great installment in this series.......2006-08-03
I almost gave this story 4 stars but decided that, taken overall, it deserves 5. I really liked the two main characters of Adam and Diana. Handeland does a really good job of introducing very interesting new characters and letting us see characters from the other books. They are integrated very well. The chemistry between Adam and Diana was explosive to say the least...I loved it. My one criticism was the continued angst that Diana felt over her dead husband Simon. I felt it was a little over the top but the rest of the story was great. It leaves you with just enough information that you can't wait to read the next story.
Romance and the paranormal.......2006-07-23
If you like hot romance mixed with the paranormal, you'll love this novel. It's a sequel to 'Blue Moon', but can stand on its own if you haven't read the previous novel. I loved the added flavor of New Orleans mystique as well as a bit of history about voodoo and the Acadians (French/Canadian settlers). When rumors of wolf attacks lead to the legendary werewolves in the bayous, Diana Malone sets out to prove they exist. What she isn't prepared for is tangling with a mystery man who may be more animal than human. This is a great suspense tale with spicy sex scenes! If I met a werewolf that hot, would I even care if he ripped my throat out?

The Fantasy Crusher....STRIKES AGAIN! (and I'm still a girl).......2006-07-11
Well...here I am, writing negative reviews about the books I hate...what fun, eh? I figure that people like me will enjoy being saved from books I hate...or something like that! Anyways, sorry to the people who liked this book! This book really didn't keep me focused on it. I kept on getting distracted. I also didn't like the main character. In real life, I would probably kick her. Because...um, BEcause...uh...ANYWAY, the story is also kind of garbled. Maybe the plot thickens in the next one...? I don't know. I don't happen to care, either. It's also not very entertaining. No jokes. No stupid stuff. Just all of this nightcreature-hoopla. Oh yeah...HOOPLA!HOOPLA!HOOOOOOPLA! Okay...I'm done. I gave this book a two instead of a one because the story, at least, has SOMETHING going for it. It may be very small, but it's there. I think...But I'm not gonna waste MY money on it!
AMAZING!.......2006-06-14
This series is spectacular, not only is the artwork amazing, but the storyline and characters are gripping too! And as to the allegations of this being about a girl being groped by her schoolmates, there is absoloutely no sexual content in there AT ALL. Guys don't be put off, there's plenty of humour and action, I'm not a fan of really girly books either but I looooved this. This series really stands apart from the others, it's worth buying even just for the artwork alone. Even if you just buy a cheap used copy to give it a go, this is a definate must. I guarantee you'll be hooked!
Wonderful, if you care to read into it.......2006-05-02
This is an absolutely wonderful manga. It may be a bit confusing at times (all the characters tend to look alike) but if you read into it and dont just scan through the pictures it really has a great story line
Plus, theres a vampire xP
She isn't just a girl in a swimsuit.......2006-01-22
When I first started reading Crescent Moon, I was hooked. I loved the art, especially of Mahiru in her underwater world. It's so beautiful. And in response to another reviewer. I didn't realise that it was even supposed to be a Shoujo or Bishounen manga. Maybe if you'd finished the book before reviewing it, you would also have noticed that there is more to the plot than "a young girl being groped by all her schoolmates".
All in all it's worth buying.
Wasn't impressed........2005-09-03
Usually a Shonen Ai and Yaoi fan I decided to try a different genre and I wasn't impressed with this Shoujo Title. A young girl being gropped by all her school mates, talking about her period and always in a swimsuit? Not to my liking. I put it down after reading 20 or so pages. No real Bishonen, seriously try Yaoi, this Shoujo genre has nothing to offer to what I've seen.

Customer Reviews:
Bed Time Book.......2003-03-12
This book is a great book to read kids before bed time. It's about a girl named Susan as she sleeps in her bed at night. It describes a lot of the things that are going on at the same time in the world like animals in the woods, Johnny playing his saxophone, and a boat on its way to dock. It has the rhythm of a lullabye and is a great nighttime book. I have nothing to add to this book because it's perfect the way it is. So I'm giving it 5-STARS and I recommend you read it, too!
A Favorite for Sleepy Time.......2000-03-10
This book has become very special in our family and is our favorite bedtime book. The author takes a child through the nighttime with animals and people in the garden, the city, on the ocean, in her own home. Easy to read or to read to, easy to memorize, and such calming and gentle verse that you'll find yourself repeating it to yourself at day's end: "Up above the earth so far, Hang half a moon and one whole star, Hang one whole star and half a moon: Nighttime will be coming soon.

very special book.......2006-06-18
My mom read some of these poems to me as a child. When she was dying, I read them to her. She smiled when almost nothing made her smile. And then later in the process, they calmed her when nearly nothing else could calm her. These poems seem almost sacred to me.
Should be required reading for every loving parent........1997-04-08
I have read several of Tagore's works but nothing has ever touched me as deeply as the lines in these poems about children and their loves. The one on the death of a child is my favorite. I lost my own child with leukemia several years ago and thought the tears had all dried up but these touching words of this great poetic master found some still tender areas. If these poems are so very beautiful in their English translations, I can only guess what they must sound like in the original rhythmic and lyrical Bengali language. Thank you for allowing me to review and recommend this book

Disturbing reading.......2006-03-12
I have to say first that I was given this book for Christmas and I had not heard of it before. My initial reaction to the cover was suspicion that this was a cheap sensationalist effort and the picture of the author did not reassure me (apologies to the author). Having stated my prejudices, I have to say that I found myself turning the pages rapidly. It is an easy and enticing read, constructed as it is, of short segments dealing with characters, events and relationships that reappear through the book. By the final chapters, much of my initial suspicion was replaced with an awareness that this was written by someone who has a lot of personal inside information. That much of what is presented is plausible and disturbing. For the importance of this insight into a history of events which are shaping our world I have given the book its 4 stars. That is not to say that I necessarily think the book is great literature. I don't for example think that the blend of factual journalism and fictional narative are blended convincingly. Also one is constantly wondering where the facts end and the fiction begins which tends to undermine the credibility somewhat. Having said all that, I believe the most important aspect of this book is that it makes you think! And certainly a few beaurocrats and politicians should be losing some sleep over it!
Essential reading ( Washington Defense and Foreign Affairs).......2005-12-02
Defense & Foreign Affairs [Washington D.C.]
Special Analysis
Volume XXIII, No. 98
October, 2005
New Study Maps Complex Web of Nationalist, Islamist
Links and History of Indonesian, SE Asian Terrorism
Analysis. Staff Report. A new book by veteran
intelligence officer and author Kerry Collison1 has
emerged as essential reading for any analyst or
official attempting to make comprehensible the
complex, and often contradictory, web of historical
factors and relationships which led to the two sets of
terrorist bombings in Bali, Indonesia, in 2002 and
2005, and the array of terrorist and nationalist
unconventional warfare undertakings in Indonesia and
across South-East Asia over the past few decades. The
study makes clear that Jamaah Islamiyah (JI) and its
related organizations, such as Laskar Jihad (LJ) and
Abu Sayyaf, are far from finished in their mission, or
their relationship with the global al-Qaida movement,
and remain sustained by many aspects of the
nationalist and economic societies they seek to
destroy.
The book, Crescent Moon Rising,2 was, like a number of
Collison's books, written as a "fact-based political
thriller" to enable the author to get around
Indonesia's delicate libel laws as well as to place
all the historical facts into a narrative matrix which
allows the broad sweep of cultures, historical
developments, and characters within a framework where
the events, and people, start to make sense.
For the professional intelligence reader, the
fictional narrative used to bind the historical data
into a context does not get in the way of Collison's
case presentation, but makes it easy reading and a way
to get analysts - even those only marginally familiar
with Indonesian history and politics - into a frame of
reference which makes the topic intelligible. Collison
has decades of experience in Indonesia, and knows
virtually all of the key players on all sides of the
Indonesian military and intelligence spectrum, for
example. This earlier had made him perhaps the first
commentator to highlight the fact that current
Indonesian Pres. Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono would rise
to the national leadership.
Among the things which Collison highlights are:
1. The firm and clear linkage between the
Indonesian Islamist movements and the al-Qaida
movement of Osama bin Laden and the less-than-formal,
and always fluid, way in which targeting, inter-group
cooperation, and financing are achieved;
2. The linkage between the terrorist groups and some
key elements of the Indonesian National Military
Forces (TNI: Tentara Nasional Indonesia) in the
constant battle for power between the "Red and White"
(nationalist) and "Green" (Islamist) elements of the
TNI;
3. The rôle of South-East Asian-based front
companies in financing and logistical support for
terrorist and insurgent groups across the region,
linking Islamist activities in Indonesia, Thailand,
the Philippines, Singapore, and Australia;
4. The breakdowns in trust and intelligence
exchanges between the US, Australia, and other players
- often apparently for reasons of compartmentalization
and national objectives - which enabled some terrorist
operations to proceed unhindered, including the Bali 1
bombings (2002), some of the Jakarta bombings, and the
September 11, 2001, attacks on the US;
5. The impact of the South-East Asian economic
collapse on terrorist activities;
6. The rôle of the Dutch Government and secessionist
elements (or elements which never supported the
creation of Indonesia in the first place) within
Indonesia in attempting to seek independence for the
Moluccas and West Papua, and the potential rôles of
the People's Republic of China (PRC) and others in
possibly pushing for United Nations plebiscites on the
independence of those territories;
7. The resultant psychological attitudes within the
TNI and Islamist movements toward Australia from
Australia's late, and reluctant, rôle in assisting the
independence of East Timor;
8. The linkages between Laskar Jihad's activities
and the "red and white" and "green" TNI factions'
objectives in seeking to retain Indonesian national
unity through creating, artificially, the tensions
between Christian and Muslim communities in the
Moluccas, Ambon, etc., leading to major rampant
killing operations by Laskar Jihad and related
movements, such as Komando Jihad (leading to the rise,
and reinforcement of such Christian movements as the
Coker boys, as well as to the Moluccan independence
movement);
9. Background details on the key terrorist players
in the situation, including such figures as Hambali,
Syafullah al-Yemeni, Omar al-Faruq, Omar Ibn
al-Khattab, Ramzi Yousef, Khalid Shaikh Mohammed, Abu
Sapara, and so on, and some of the intelligence
players on the US and Australian side of the equation;
and
10. An understanding of relevant US, Indonesian, and
Australian intelligence agency functions as they
relate to the situation.
Collison does not neglect the linkages of the groups
into Afghanistan and Chechnya, noting, quite apart
from the concerns over the acquisition by
Islamist-jihadist groups related to Osama bin Laden of
"suitcase" nuclear weapons, the prospect and
probability that the South-East Asian operations have
acquired former Soviet Radio Thermal Generators
(RTGs), which could be employed as substantial-scale
"dirty" bombs.
Given the current overall climate of the US-led "war
on terror", and the consequent need to create a viable
and unified Indonesia (as far as the US and Australia
are concerned), and the longer-term Chinese strategic
desire to see a break-up of a Western-oriented
Indonesia controlling both strategic resources and
strategic waterways critical to Chinese interests,
Collison's book is essential reading for analysts and
policy officials attempting to understand the
situation. Moreover, the book brings into perspective
the factors which lead to state sponsorship of, or
acquiescence to, many aspects of terrorism.
