Stephanie Plum, girl bounty hunter, the terror of Trenton, the bane of her boyfriend Joe Morelli's existence, and the delight of her crazy grandma's heart, is in the wrong place at the wrong time--as usual. Just happening to be indulging her nachos jones at a local deli when it's robbed by the notorious Red Devils, Plum is the eye witness who could put the gang leader, known as the Junkman, behind bars... if he just lets her live long enough. Looking for a place to hide out from the killer until the cops catch up with him, Stephanie sneaks into her fellow bounty hunter Ranger's apartment without telling Morelli, who's not overly fond of him. All the usual suspects in this long-running series are along for a wilder than ever ride, including Lula the gun-toting ex-hooker, Grandma Mazur, Stephanie's pregnant sister Valerie and her fiancé, as well as a host of minor characters who bring Trenton's seedier environs to life. Ten Big Ones is another madcap caper by a writer whose fans will doubtless catapult this easy beach read to the top of the bestseller list. --Jane Adams

Like Cheez Doodles: not nutritious, but yummy and fun.......2007-07-16
I usually don't go in for this kind of "beach-reading", but I make an exception for the Stephanie Plum series because they're so much fun. I figured out a few books back that the key to enjoying this series is to think of them as purely entertainment with very little relation to reality, kind of like a working-class James Bond, but female. With a donut addiction.
Stephanie Plum and her two uber-alpha-men, Morelli and Ranger, are as bold and brave as ever in Ten Big Ones, but I took one star off this review partly because their ongoing love-triangle seems a little bit stagnant in this installment.
The amusing minor characters' story arcs that flow throughout the series are as enjoyable to read as always(Stephanie's sister Valerie and her hapless fiance Albert Kloughn, Lula the ex-ho, et al). However, Grandma Mazur needs to find a new hobby or maybe a suitor, as she seems to be stuck in a rut. We wouldn't want her to get too bored and start using that piece in her purse just for the hahas.
As usual, Janet has added a few oddball characters to the mix in Ten Big Ones, and one that I'm hoping to see return in future books is Sally Sweet because he's so f-f-fudging funny. I didn't really like the Frito-Lay lady and her story very much, another reason for only four stars.
As for the plot of this one, I'll leave that to other reviewers to dissect, except to say that the ending was Wam! Pow! unexpectedly outrageous and funny, so kudos to you Ms. Evanovich.
Whenever I find myself thinking "that would never happen in real life" (and this happens more and more with each Stephanie Plum book) I just remind myself that it's okay to enjoy this kind of read once in a while, so long as I brush my teeth afterwards.
And I just have to add that even though he is one of the more improbable characters here, I still have the major hots for Ranger.
One of my favorite of the series.......2007-06-12
I'm currently rereading the Stephanie Plum series in order to refresh my history for Book 13. I'm surprised to read that some reviewers detested this book, because it is one of my favorites of the series. It's another one that will cause you to laugh-out-loud with the trouble that Stephanie and her cohorts get into/cause.
In Book 10, Stephanie gets fingered by the Slayer gang in Trenton and is marked for, well, elimination. Not to give too much away of the plot, but since she is marked with a big bullseye, she needs a place to hide out that won't put her family or friends in jeopardy. Where would you go? She tracks down the BatCave (and if you read the books, you know where I'm talking about.)
As far as continuity issues with the editing regarding the Porsche/SUV - there is no problem. Evanovich is referring to the Porsche Cayanne SUV that they were using, sometimes using Porsche and sometimes the SUV to indicate it had more than 2 seats.
I would have preferred another chapter that wrapped up the living conditions for Stephanie after the climax of the plot, but knowing Evanovich, she just wanted to let us all stew over what it all meant until the next book came out ... and who am I to question the master! :)
stepanie does it again!.......2007-06-08
I have read all the previous Stephanie Plum novels and enjoyed this one as well. She has a great sense of humor (love Grandma) and the twists are just enough for light reading
The tenth Stephanie Plum story and still fun.......2007-06-01
Janet Evanovich is a very popular writer, her books consistently appearing on the best sellers lists. Her most popular series is the Stephanie Plum series which contains the tales of a lingerie buyer-turned-bounty hunter.
In this, the 10th (hence the title) book in the line, Stephanie becomes the target of a gang assassin known as Junkman. While trying to balance doing her job, preparing for her sister's wedding and not getting killed, she stays pretty busy.
The writing is light-hearted and Stephanie, along with Lulu, her 'plus sized' coworker and Connie, her friend with mafia contacts, get into very interesting situations. Sally Sweet, her hairy, cross-dressing male friend just make the situations more interesting.
On the romantic side, Stephanie must balance her devotion to Cop and boyfriend Joe Morelli with her increasing physical attraction to the man in black, Ranger, her mentor and hero in the bounty hunting world.
This story is a lot of fun. Read it.
Book Description
Six shots. Five dead. One heartland city thrown into a state of terror. But within hours the cops have it solved: a slam-dunk case. Except for one thing. The accused man says: You got the wrong guy. Then he says: Get Reacher for me. And sure enough, from the world he lives in—no phone, no address, no commitments–ex–military investigator Jack Reacher is coming. In Lee Child’s astonishing new thriller, Reacher’s arrival will change everything—about a case that isn’t what it seems, about lives tangled in baffling ways, about a killer who missed one shot–and by doing so give Jack Reacher one shot at the truth.…
The gunman worked from a parking structure just thirty yards away–point-blank range for a trained military sniper like James Barr. His victims were in the wrong place at the wrong time. But why does Barr want Reacher at his side? There are good reasons why Reacher is the last person Barr would want to see. But when Reacher hears Barr’s own words, he understands. And a slam-dunk case explodes. Soon Reacher is teamed with a young defense lawyer who is working against her D.A. father and dueling with a prosecution team that has an explosive secret of its own. Like most things Reacher has known in life, this case is a complex battlefield. But, as always, in battle, Reacher is at his best.
Moving in the shadows, picking his spots, Reacher gets closer and closer to the unseen enemy who is pulling the strings. And for Reacher, the only way to take him down is to know his ruthlessness and respect his cunning–and then match him shot for shot….

One Shot (Jack Reacher).......2007-09-02
Five people die of gunshots as they leave work and the blame rests on a former military man trained as a sniper. The only person he asks to see is Jack Reacher. No one can find him, but not to worry for Jack is on his way to see the suspect. Jack happened to see the story on television and he's come to fulfill a promise he made the shooter, a man named James Barr.
Jack soon realizes that there's more going on here and he decides to find out what it is. It puts him in danger as there are some nasty characters involved in this. It's a tale that keeps you on your toes and eagerly flipping pages to find out how Jack will get out the mess he's in this time. It's a good read, but I've liked a few of the other Reacher books better.
Lee Child the Storyteller.......2007-08-23
Jack Reacher is Superman, Capt. Marvel, Capt. Midnight, Batman, and Ellery Queen. Should Mr. Childs sell the rights to his Jack Reacher novels - - - Reacher should be played by James Galdofini. Can't miss. You can not put this book down. It has all the excitement one needs for an evening of high adventure.

Splendid!.......2007-08-11
All of Lee Child's books are outstanding. I look forward to every new book and then share them with my cousin who lives in a very rural area.
The amusing thing was that she emailed me to ask if I had read any of the great "Jack Reacher" books.
I sincerely hope he keeps up the outstanding writing.
Obtuse Plot but Good Summer Read.......2007-07-29
Jack reacher works his way through the plots twists and turns looking for what really happened in what at first glance is an open and shut case. I didn't know the Army's Criminal Investigative Division was the breeding ground for semi-superhuman heros but if the author says so it's OK by me. I think of them as E-7's and WO's trying, without much success, to find stolen PC's at Camp Swampy. The hero takes more punishment than any 5 people could stand but still comes back kicking. A nest of Russian former Gulag inmates are his nemises and they are almost, I say almost, up to Jack's level of stoic accomplishment.
Jack's the Man!.......2007-06-13
I get seriously hooked into Child's novels, and the Reacher series is captivating. Great entertainment!!
Book Description
On September 28, 2000, former Indiana State Trooper David Camm made a frantic call to his former colleagues in the state troopers office: He'd just walked into his garage, and found lying on the floor the bodies of his 35-year-old wife, Kim, and their two children, Brad and Jill, ages 7 and 5.This was the kind of crime that could tear the heart out of a community. The Camm's lived the American Dream. They had what seemed like a loving marriage, a nice little house with a white picket fence, and two adorable children. To top it all off, David Camm was a pillar of the community who had dedicated his career to the enforcement of the law and the sanctity of human life. Then, this happened.Three days later, it got worse when police arrested David Camm for the triple murder. Soon, new stories started emerging: stories about mistresses and violent bursts of temper. And as the ugly truth about the Camms' marriage got uglier and the evidence against David started piling up, two families-and the community at large-took positions at opposite sides of a yawning and bitter divide. Was David Camm a dedicated, conscientious public servant-the victim of unspeakable tragedy, railroaded by an unfair system? Or was he a cold-hearted murderer who earned his three murder convictions and every one of the 195 years behind bars to which he was sentenced?Investigative journalist John Glatt finds out in this gripping new book.
Customer Reviews:
A Real Life Whodunit for True Crime Fans.......2007-07-13
Once again John Glatt has created an attention-grabbing true crime tale, yet this time with a bonus: a real life whodunit to leave the mind boggled and debates of guilt or innonence ongoing.
The story of former Indiana State Police officer David Camm and just what role he played in the deaths of his wife, Kim, and two young children, Bradley and Jill, is something that, as of yet, still remains to be determined. Despite being convicted, the conviction being overturned, and retried with new charges added, Camm is currently seeking a third trial.
Glatt does an excellent job of laying all out all facets of the case; from a flaw-filled investigation, to alleged unethical behavior on behalf of the prosecution, to the shameless shananigans pulled by the defense, Glatt details them all.
While this is one more spouse who kills (an all too often story in today's society), this particular case is most interesting because of the many twists and the minscule evidence used to convict Camm.
In closing, I'll take this opportunity to provide my opinion on Camm's guilt or innocence as other reviewers have...The evidence alone was not enough to convict, there was reasonable doubt. I believe the first jury convicted Camm on his adulterious lifestyle alone. It was a verdict that never should have been. But is Camm innocent? No, he is not. David Camm played a role in his wife and children's deaths; plain and simple. Whether he was the gunman or solictor, we may never really know; but of one he is guilty. He is not a wrongfully convicted man in the sense of being innocent, just possibly convicted of the wrong crime.
GUILTY!!.......2007-05-13
I also bought this book after seeing a dateline special on this case. David Camm was a lucky narcissist who wanted more. Unfortunately, much more happened with this case after the book was written. After looking up more information on the internet, my personal theory is that Mr. Boney was there for a very simple reason; not only was David Camm going to free himself from a marriage and child support obligations, he was going to emerge a hero by killing the man (Boney) that he discovered in his garage. I believe I saw an interview with Boney in which he states "he pointed the gun at me". I hope the terror in his children's eyes haunt him until his last breath.
How Stupid Are We Really.......2007-04-21
I truly enjoyed this book, and once again the American Criminal Justice system even with all it's advances continues to frighten me. While I can not find one shred of goodness in the heart of David Camm, and while I abhore child molesters and think they should be put away for life, i find it horrifying that a simple accusation, adultery, and a life insurance policy which we all have can land me in jail for the rest of my life simply because I am the most obvious suspect. Even with advances in scientific evidence we still allow our opinion of people shape how the case in investigated, how the DA build his case, and how the jury reaches it's virdict, and even in the face of glaring evidence to the contrary how we will stand by that belief even if it makes us look completely stupid. From the magic bullet, Sam Shephards ruined life, and OJ's six minute clean up, prosecutors and the family of victums, and the american public refuse to admit that they could be wrong or that there senario doesn't fit. Yes Camm was a sucky father, who left the care of his children of his children to his wife and day care, but as i sit here typing this today, I am looking at the picture in the local paper of a day care worker who is charged with killing three children. Is it not possible that with all the activities these children were involved with that someone at one of these institution he was so willing to let his wife leave them with had someone was molesting his daughter? They saw her alot more than he did so who would have the most opportunity. Also why will police believe the testimony of a man who has a history of attacking women and taking their personal items, and has recently served jail time for armed robbery, and looks like serial killer in the making with his supposid peeking tom shoe stea ling foot fettish, when they probably wouldn't believe him in any other circumstance so they just rebuild their theory that it was conspirecy between this man and Camm which had more holes in it than swiss cheese and the idiotic public stupidly nods their heads and agree. When you hear hoof beats you think horses not Zebras. Unless I misread in government class you must be able to prove that a person comitted a crime beyond a reasonable doubt to convict them, not prove that they didn't do it beyond a resonable doubt to find them not guilty. and when the number of reasonable doubts number atleast 11 and counting you have to let a person go. 11 people can tell you this man was anywhere else but home and somehow he's in jail? And if for the sake aurgument if he did slip home unnoticed, the question then becomes why would he go home, how would he know that his wife suspected him of doing something to his daughter, where is the phone call, the email, the letter, that says "I know what you did and I"m telling". If you can't even provide that piece of evidence, then any one with half a brain would have some type of doubt that this man didn't do it.
I don't like adulterous people, and i hate child molesters, and no one would call me a bleeding heart liberal, but what i do hate more is what has become of our criminal justice system, and it is not until most of us are on the other side of will we understand how we have let innuendo, and public opinion and not fact decide who goes to jail and who remain free. In the past decade with DNA evidence it has been proven that plenty of AFrican American men were convicted of rape often time with eye witnesses saying they were somewhere else by a biased system but even with all this scientific evidence that has been used to free people, we still refuse to use it and strength of character to say not guilty when the media tells us to say guilty. when you have juries, police, and prosecutors who are worried about pride, writing a tell all book, appearing on tv shows for money, rather than the fact, the defendent doesn't just suffer the victums do too. This has got to stop! And quick! But if all the prosecution needs is a bumb theory and proof that you have roving eye and other body parts you could end up in jail as well whether you did it or lots of us and people we love could end up in jail when we don't deserve to be.
Recommended Reading.......2007-03-19
If you are a True Crime fan, you should enjoy this book. It is well researched and well written. The story is interesting. While the crime itself is rather ordinary, the stories behind the crime are what I found gripping. I also recommend "And Never Leave Me," by this same author.
I finished reading "One Deadly Night" several months ago and have since seen a prime-time news documentary about this case. It is rather disturbing that the "Bones" sweatshirt that was found at the crime scene was not fully pursued as a viable piece of evidence by the prosecuting attorney at the time of the initial trial. Do I believe David Camm murdered his wife and two children? I am not certain to this day what I think. It seems most unlikely that Charles Boney, who had no association to any of the victims, would have chosen the Camm house (at random) and then killed 3 innocent people for no discernable reason. These murders did not personally benefit Charles Boney in any way. I think it is likely that Boney had some sort of relationship with David Camm and was either asked by Camm to commit the murders or was there with Camm when he committed the murders. Although Charles Boney did not present as insecere or untruthful during the interview I watched, I am equally certain he can be charming when he needs to be and has the capacity to appear sincere even when he is not. He is a two-bit career criminal with a long history of conning others.
What I am certain of is this... I have not one shred of sympathy for David Camm. This may be an evil thought, but I really do not care if Camm was wrongfully convicted or spends the remainder of his life in prison. He was not a good husband, a good father, or a good man! He was supremely selfish and did whatever he wanted whenever he wanted. His wife did EVERYTHING for those two children and did EVERYTHING for David Camm to assure that he had a restful, stable home environment waiting for him. His wife took the children to school, worked full time, picked the children up from school, and escorted the children to all extracirricular activities. What did David Camm do? He chose to play basketball and pursue other women, as if he had no responsibilities at home! Perhaps he got what he deserved... at least morally. As I said, I really don't care what happens to David Camm.
Reasonable Doubt?.......2007-01-19
I do not feel that the state proved their case "beyond a reasonable doubt" at the first trial. That is not to say he did not do it, he may well have but that is not suppose to be enough for a conviction in the USA! Excellent read, seems to be well balanced. Retired State Trooper, NY.

Interesting.......2007-09-05
My teacher used "The World's Shortest Stories" for a lesson one day. I've never paid so much attention during one class period! I thought it was incredible the way these tiny, 55-word stories could be so little, yet have so much meaning behind them. Each story was thought provoking. Dispite their size, they all have some kind of "twist" to it. I was inspired and immediately wanted to write my own 55-word story.
If you're looking for inspiration for writing, this is for you. If you're a great writer and want to try this style of writing, you have to check it out. I recommend this book to anyone and everyone. Even if you don't want to write a 55-word story yourself, this book will get you thinking differently. It's almost like solving puzzles, reading these stories. Murder, Love, Horror, Suspense... that's not all the book is about. There's many more topics inside. No one story is like the other. I found this book one of the best books I've come across.
Don't waste your money.......2007-06-23
Absolutely terrible. The "authors" in this collection are amateurs who consistently fall victim to the predictable traps. These stories are filled with cliches, gimmicks and unsurprising surprise endings. Even worse, it feels as if they were all written by the same unimaginative author with a corny sense of humor. Get one of the Flash Fiction or Sudden Fiction collections instead if you're looking for something that actually has some literary value.
55 word salute, er, review..........2006-11-07
This book is one that I reread frequently, as the stories are indeed the perfect length. Broken into categories, the stories cover the range of plot possibilities and human emotions, and are perfect for the shorter-attention span of modern readers. Fifty-five fiction even accepts submissions from regular authors. Try writing one yourself today!
Great teaching tool - used selectively.......2006-08-26
I teach 7th and 8th grade, many second language and non-standard english students. The 55 word stories provide an excellent opportunity to demonstrate the reading/thinking skills of inferencing, drawing conclusions and also a springboard for introducing and explaining the background of euphemisms and common sayings and figures of speech that are not familiar to second language readers.
Some Hit, Some Miss!.......2004-11-02
This collection of the world's shortest stories (as with most collections and anthologies of shortest stories) is a "hit or miss" collection. Basically, this means that while some of the stories are clever, others are flat-out duds. Most of the story's cleverness relies on unsuspected plot twists and ironies in the ending, thus making for an amusing read but bringing little to the table in the world of quality literature. Some of the stories are simply too minimilistic to have any emmotional impact on the reader, and others are very cliche and border on poetry. Instead of buying this book or any collection of "shortest" fiction, I would suggest seeking out specific authors who are masters of the shorter story, such as Raymond Carver. While none of Carver's stories are as short as 55 words, just one of his good shorter stories ("Popular Mechanics," for example) will pack a more poignant punch than any of the stories in this collection -- combined.
Customer Reviews:
The true story at last!.......2001-01-14
The subtitle of this book tells it all -- THE TRUE STORY OF THE APPALACHIAN MURDER THAT INSPIRED ONE OF AMERICA'S MOST POPULAR BALLADS. The author has done meticulous research into the murder of Laura Foster which was popularized by the Kingston Trio. He uses court records, newspaper accounts, and other documents to authenticate his findings about her murder and the trial, conviction, and execution of Tom Dooley. I have read many accounts of the crime, but none were so well documented, and this time I feel that I have an understanding of what really happened. The reader gets to know not only the facts of the case, but also the central figures, their families and neighbors, and the law and court officials. The background information also provides a picture of life in the foothill of North Carolina during the second half of the nineteenth century.
Even though the account sometimes reads like a history book and gets bogged down with details, it is a fascinating book and should be enjoyed by anyone who has an interest in history and who has ever hummed along with "The Ballad of Tom Dooley."

Thrilling investigations.......2006-06-19
Octavio Pena is convincingly the best in the business of private investigations and business security. Much of the book reads better than a movie. For those who are unfamiliar with the corruption in government agencies, this book will be a real eye-opener. Most compelling are several chapters describing coverups within the IRS the author encountered while working on specific cases. Although the book was fascinating, I felt Mr. Pena had limited the focus and perspective of his commentary too much to the specific cases he was working on. I was hoping to see some more opinion by the author on how our government could be improved, either by better legislative oversight, or other legal reforms. Nevertheless well worth reading.
I loved it and I'm going to have my kids read it, too........1998-12-29
Stories such as are in this book used to be more common, but are getting harder to find. One person fighting to uphold morality and values can make a difference. Entertaining and inspiring.

It doesn't seem possible that petite, blonde Keri Dalcanton could have stabbed police sergeant Joe McNaughton 20 times, dragged his body to a public square in downtown Tulsa, chained the corpse naked to a fountain, and hog-tied him, breaking several of his bones before she cut off his penis, stuffed it in his mouth, and wrote "Faithless" across his chest in his own blood. But McNaughton's friends on the force are convinced that the stripper was responsible. When Ben Kincaid takes Keri's case, they do everything they can to ensure that the hero cop killer's lawyer pays for her defense with his own blood, too.
Ben is convinced that Keri was framed. Beyond that, he's a little bit in love with her. The "blue squeeze" put on him by the Tulsa PD does nothing to convince him that he's wrong, not even when he's arrested and charged with complicity in McNaughton's death. Kincaid, Bernhardt's series hero (Dark Justice, Silent Justice), is a decent, hard-working lawyer who has offended too many Tulsa movers and shakers to put his still-struggling law firm into the black. When the girlfriend of one of his staffers is attacked as she's zeroing in on evidence that could free Keri, Ben plunges ahead with his defense, regardless of the danger it puts him in. Bernhardt's trademark pacing and courtroom expertise deliver this legal thriller to a riveting conclusion, with a surprise ending that most readers won't see coming. --Jane Adams
Book Description
The crime is remarkably heinous: veteran police detective Joe McNaughton is found savagely slain, mutilated, and hung from a public fountain in downtown Tulsa. The accused is a tabloid reporter’s dream: stunning, nineteen-year-old Keri Dalcanton, a stripper involved in a kinky affair with the married McNaughton. Crusading attorney Kincaid takes up her defense. But when a police raid on his office uncovers the bloodstained murder weapon, Ben himself is charged with conspiracy and murder. What follows is a breathlessly twisting battle of legal wits–and lethal surprises–in which no holds are barred, no secrets are left unexposed, and ultimately, nothing is what it seems. . . .

Reviews by Nan Kilar.......2007-09-11
A Tulsa cop is the victim in a grizzly murder and his mutilated body is chained up in a public place. Ben Kincaid represents the accused, a nineteen-year-old stripper who was having an affair with the married cop. Ben gets Keri off the first time on a technicality. But when the alleged murder weapon is found in Ben's office, he's in court as a defendant. Ben's law partner gets him off that unfounded charge, but Keri is soon on trial again after the technicality is thrown out.
There are trial scenes, office scenes, hospital scenes. This book is just a tad too long in the middle since the good stuff comes later, even though you have most of it figured out by then.
Better than Perfect Justice.......2005-08-01
This is the second Bernhardt novel I've read, and it is much better than Perfect Justice. Bernhardt's writing style has matured. I'd give this book a B-.
You'll Never Figure Out Whodunit, or Why.......2005-07-31
A lot of writers who have reoccurring characters assume their readers have read the previous books in the series. Not so with William Bernhardt. Readers who have come to know and love Ben Kincaid will devour MURDER ONE with delight, however a reader new to Bernhardt will have no trouble picking up the book and diving right in. There is not an ounce of assumption here. It's as if MURDER ONE was the first Kincaid book penned by Bernhardt.
And there are all the elements of a first rate mystery here. The story opens in court, throwing the reader right into the heat of a death penalty case. "But wait!" you want to exclaim, "Why are we getting the climax on page one?" Good question. At first look one might think that lawyer Kincaid, after getting his client off with a dash of luck and a bolt insight, was going to kiss her goodbye and move on to another case. "Cheating!" I wanted to shout. "No fair getting me involved with this striking young woman who is fighting for her life, then to chuck her out of the story."
But I was wrong, Bernhardt knew well what he was doing. His well drawn cop characters aren't about to let a cop killer go, no matter how young and pretty she is. They quickly contrive a way to get around the constitutional double jeopardy restrictions by planting the murder weapon in Kincaid's office, then arresting and charging him with the crime. This makes for some excellent courtroom drama, not to mention some pretty disturbing scenes describing the abuse a cop killer's lawyer can expect if ever arrested and it aint't pretty.
Halfway through the book I was sure I had the ending figured out. The carefully planted clues led me right where I suppose I was supposed to go and I willingly went like an ox with a ring in it's nose. I mentally shouted, "I knew it!" and I was kinda safisfied, you know, the way you get when you've been proved right. But the book wasn't over and all of a sudden I was as wrong as Nixon`s people were when they didn't think that little Watergate thing would get them in any trouble. The who and the why of it all came as a complete surprise to me as it did to Kincaid. The subtle clues were there, but lawyer and reader glossed over them, the lawyer wanted the girl and I guess I wanted him to get her as well, so we were both blindsided. And then there was still another twist that put everything right in a way that even the most sophisticated mystery reader will marvel at. Mister Bernhardt is certainly a master of his craft.
Fantastic.......2004-12-03
This is the first novel that I read by William Bernhardt and I was very impressed. He has a smooth and enjoyable writing style. All the twists and turns in the plot and the cast of characters made this a book that was never dull. If you like legal thrillers than you'll enjoy this book
Not as good as the others in the series.......2004-08-22
Wilaim Bernhardt has a whole collection of books he has written concerning small-time lawyer Ben Kincaid and his (mis)adventures and legal maneuverings. Most of the books feature Ben and his ragtag office staff going against well-funded corporate lawyers or the District Attorney's office and somehow coming up with a win.
This book is no different, except that it is not as good a book as the others he has written. In fact, I would not have reviewed this book for this forum at all except for the review quote on the cover that says, "...You never see the end coming." In today's over-hyped marketplace I've seen a lot of quotes like this, but this time it was true. I did not see it coming and that (and the accurate quote) deserves recognition.
This book, however, only rates a "3 stars" from me - it did not stay true to the strong character development that was present in the other books and I thought Ben Kincaid strayed from the character that has been built throughout the rest of the books.
I do, however, recommend any of his very early books. They are fun and well-written

Three Great Mrs. Murphy Mysteries!.......2006-06-29
In the 4th book in the Mrs. Murphy and Tucker mystery series, Pay Dirt, a mysterious stranger has ridden into the sleepy town of Crozet, Virginia. Rumbling in on a motorcycle, the appearance of the man yelling for "Malibu" startles the small town, and they try to insist to the man that no woman by that name resides in the area. Even though the residents of Crozet are curious, they have other things on their minds. The town is worried about a computer virus, Threadneedle that is supposed to hit businesses on August 1st. When a huge sum of money goes missing from the local bank, everyone assumes that the bank has fallen victim to the computer virus. Everyone scrambles at the bank to locate the missing funds, and when the biker is found murdered, pieces of the puzzle start to fall together. And when Harry and her two famous animal sleuths get involved in the case, you can be sure that she will find and apprehend the culprit.
The 5th installment, Murder She Meowed, Mrs. Murphy and Tucker Mystery are going to the races. Mary Minor Haristeen (aka Harry) has been asked to be a fence judge for the Montpelier steeplechase race, and being a huge fan of the sport, she readily agrees. She is a witness to a violent confrontation between two jockeys, and when one of the jockeys is found dead later in the day, she quickly begins to suspect that this was not a simple misunderstanding. The murderer leaves a calling card, and when another jockey turns up dead with a similar card attached to the body, Harry fears that there may be at least two more victims. Along with help from Mrs. Murphy (a tiger cat), Tee Tucker (a Welsh corgi), Pewter (a fat grey cat), and some new animal characters (including mice, several cats, and horses), Harry is able to stop this murderous spree in the competitive world of steeplechase.
In the 6th book in the Mrs. Murphy and Tucker Mystery series, Murder on the Prowl, the little town of Crozet, Virginia is shaken by the appearance of an obituary in the local paper. On its own, it wouldn't be shocking, as people unfortunately pass on each day. However, this obituary is of the headmaster at St. Elizabeth's prep school, and everyone is shocked by his sudden "death". Thankfully, the obit turns out to be false and is found to be a school age prank, and the town quickly returns to normal. That is...until one more false obituary of another prominent citizen appears, and the boy who placed the first bogus obituary swears he had nothing to do with this one. Then, one of the men is murdered, shaking the small town and its citizens. Mary Minor Haristeen (aka Harry) is the postmistress of the town, and has solved a few cases in the past with the help of her irrepressible feline companion, Mrs. Murphy, a tiger cat, and her canine companion, Tee Tucker, a Welsh corgi. Adding to that mix is Pewter, a large grey cat who is spending more time away from her former home at the market, to enjoy time with Murphy and Tucker. The four friends jump in to solve a murder, and find themselves fighting for their lives against a killer out for blood.
This is a great series! The animals talk to one another, and feel that they are superior to humans because we do not speak "cat" or "dog". For some readers, it does take a little bit of time to get used to the communication between the animals, but it is well worth it. I love the way that the residents of the town interact with one another, and this is as much of a draw to the books as is the mystery. I am often guessing until the end as to how the mystery will be resolved, and I am also curious to see how the animals will help in solving the case. This series makes me wish I could pack up and visit Crozet on my next vacation.
If you enjoy "The Cat Who" mysteries by Lilian Jackson Braun, you might want to give this series a try.
The first book in the series is called "Wish You Were Here". Enjoy!

I have lived through this.......2007-09-02
Don Lasseter has done an amazing job on this book. It has taken me back many years ago, when I knew that I had Sarah by my side. I loved her so much that words could not explain. This book shows the pain that we went through. How forever our lives are changed. Namey, has changed our lives forever and not for the better. Sarah was my cousin. She will foreer live with us in our hearts and our prayers. Reading this book, has taken me back to the days in court watching Namey enter the room. This book tells a lot about the turth. Matt is still very much part of our family and forever will be. Thanks to Don, her life story will live on to hopefuly one day help others.
I wish this Rick Namey had picked a different name!.......2007-07-27
My name is Rick Namey, aka Richard Namey. I am an author and no relation to this poor, sad creature who could not control his own rage. My son shares my name as a junior. He is a rock musician. Both of us named Rick Namey, are often the subject of Google inquiries which unfortunately, turn up this guy. I wish I could make him go away but I can't. Actually, I wish I could make Google go away too. Search engines were better BEFORE they took over, because they weren't run by ads. At least, this Rick Namey is a lot younger than I, and a good bit older than my son, which limits the confusion. And, hopefully, this review will pop up and clear up any confusion.
A very compelling and sad story of a love triangle!.......2007-05-20
I enjoyed this book thoroughly and would recommend it to all lovers of non-fiction.
Champions.......2007-05-17
I was moved to tears at the end of this book by the letter Matt Corbett wrote to the judge, and also, by the victim impact statement of Sarah's mother. They tell how much damage was done by the killer, Richard Namey. It is so unfair that one person can cause so much suffering to so many innocent people. I was impressed by the courage and the ability to forgive of Matt Corbett. He is a champion. I hope he will be able to walk again someday. Another champion is the prosecutor, Dennis Conway. Not many people would have gotten through law school with all of the obstacles to overcome that he had to. Thank God he did!
Mr. Perfect The Slimeball And The Girl.......2007-04-21
I really enjoyed this book, however this is probably the first book that had a running background for all the key players, which I enjoyed. It's a sad, sad story about a young woman who while dating Mr. Perfect, decides that perhaps the grass could be greener with the not so nice, naughty boy. But when she decides that naughty is not as much fun as she hoped it would be. She tries to break it off and he turns out to be a crazed ex who starts to stalk his prey. The cops can't do anything about this satistic little pri*k because he hasn't crossed that fine line. But when he does his defense attorney tries to slime her to get the crazy stalker off the hook and keep him out of jail. It's a one-nighter and worth reading.

Murder One is not written with the verve of some of the other books in Writer's Digest's Howdunit series, but if you need to know what kind of car serial killers prefer to drive (Volkswagens) or what happens to the contents of a human skull when subjected to intense heat (they "boil and explode much like a hard-boiling egg that is left unattended"), this is the place to turn. Mauro V. Corvasce and Joseph R. Paglino, investigators for the Monmouth County, New Jersey, prosecutor's office, provide the inside scoop on murders involving narcotics, gangs, organized crime, families, strangers, crimes of passion, lust, sex, and more. --Jane Steinberg

An Addition To Your Reference Library, Not A Stand-Alone.......2001-01-06
Murder One contains a lot of case studies of actual crimes. It also details motives and methods on all sorts of crimes including drug distribution, parents who kill their children and serial killers.
While this book is a great quick reference book, solid crime writing requires a little more depth than this book offers. It's worth having, though, to get you started on the right track.
ýMurder Oneý is a good, broad, writerýs guide to homicide........1999-09-24
"Murder One" accomplishes its purpose: It is a good writer's guide to homicide. Its breadth dictates lack of deep detail. It covers murder: weapons, business murders, narcotics murders, gang murders, organized-crime murders, contract murders, crime-of-passion murders and thrill/lust, sexual, mass, serial, vehicular and bizarre murders.
All books, including "Murder One", I have read in the "Howdunit Series" have been incredibly helpful.
Poorly written book........1999-07-31
The main drawback of this book is that the poor chapters about different types of homicide are not followed by any further literature.
