John Wooden is a qualified success and his book demonstrates how others can be successful. Wonderfully written and well documented with examples of Wooden's method and how to apply the pyramid of success. If you want a map for success, this is the book to read.

A bunch of one liners........2007-08-01

The book has some good ideas, but it is full of one liners. It gets boring at times.
On the good side - you have a lot of one liners to say and put on posters.

Wooden was never my type of role model to emulate, then I saw an HBO documentary and my curiosity was tweaked.
Coming of age in the fifties and sixties when whenever I heard the word "leadership" I would immediately turn off.

Leadership was the antithesis of the flower child age almost but not quite to a fault.Going through the seventies, eighties and to the present day a sea change has occurred among athelets, coaches, fans and franchises
to the point where one as jaded as myself will simply in regards to sports clamor-"WHATEVER DUDE."

The magic seems to have disappeared with the overexposure of the Knights, Bonds, Cubans and Boros (my home Spurs gladly are the exception)to the point of boredom when one thinks sports.

_Wooden_ reminded me of what I chose to ignored: there are those who are worthy of the title Leader,however rare.

Reading the work I was simply nonplused thinking can this be taught? Sadly the answer was no it can not. The question after this was is it worth pursuing; and the answer was beyond a doubt a big affirmative.

Above all Mr. Wooden is a gentleman, a very wise and worthy gentleman who can not be diminished by anyone. My generation seems to have forgotten this, myself included, and this book reminds me of the way it could be.
If you are looking for a rah-rah self-improvment book forget about _Wooden_, if, however your looking for something with nuances that force you to relate to your behavior and how you can make a difference in whatever you do then grab it, open, devour it and keep it nearby in case you ever forget what it is to be a gentleman.

An amazingly simple step-by-step book that produces results. John Wooden is the epitome of a man who lives by his values. I had the privilege of attending UCLA and could see the influence of Coach Wooden's tactics play out in all the sports teams....self control, hard work, control your response to adversity and make it work for you.....he was truly a man that "walked his talk" and lead by example. My daughter actually met the famous Coach while she was a freshman in high school when he came to talk with her soccer team and she still talks about that experience today as one of her greatest life experiences......they won the CIF championship that year.

I found his ideas regarding teamwork, success, and continuous improvement through lifelong learning to be the cornerstones of his philosophy of leadership and management. His commitment to striving for continuous excellence through simple day-to-day tactics makes management look easy. He has a deep understanding of how to utilize the concept of teamwork to incorporate everyone and propel them forward toward a common goal....and in the process making each individual the best that he can be. 12 lessons on leadership from an extraordinary leader.......2007-05-30

Coach Wooden's book practically drips with leadership maxims. I believe that Mr. Wooden would definitively be a "Level 5" leader, to use Jim Collins description of the best leaders. His chapter on using values to attract good people is great. I was particularly impressed by his dogged determination to use the basics to get the best out of his players. His lack of emphasis on winning was also inspiring. He wanted his players to do their best and was not at all interested in the scoreboard at the end of the game. With the concern placed in making the players and the team the best they could be, winning became a natural consequence of that. "Make each day your masterpiece" was another great chapter. John Wooden was unwavering about not wasting time; his fastidious interest in keeping track of every minute helped the day become a masterpiece for his players. Finally, the Pyramid of success is worth the price of the book alone. This book is important for anyone who has an interest in leadership, which, in my opinion, should be everyone. I highly recommend it.

This book of reflections and advice by John Wooden is a favorite of my husband's, mine and our teen aged son. We purchased several copies to give as gifts to coaches in our soccer league. The principles in this book can be applied to ALL areas of life. The Leadership Pyramid is a very powerful tool.

John Wooden shares his thoughts about not only basketball but about life and how his seemingly "simple" views and beliefs shaped his success. He is a inspiration to us all and his values are much needed in today's world where we have seen scandals in almost every sport. I believe this book can be enjoyed by people who are old enough to have witnessed him coach as well as the youth who have only heard about Mr. Wooden.

a bit set in his ways, probably a better
offensive than defensive strategist. "John
was a heckuva offensive player in his day,
which may be why he runs an exciting offense

A book to familiarize yourself with Wooden's Pyramid of Success. The down to Earth view of what it takes to be successful in anything you engage in is laid out in this book. Coach Wooden used the ideas here to mold his basketball teams but the underlying ideas can be applied to anything in life and allow you to be successful and fullfilled. Following the ideas he presents will make you a good person and who could ask for more then that.

Here is a book that is sure to inspire you. From the first pages it grips you, then keeps your attention until the very end. Wooden's philosophy emphasizes that sucess is not measured in "bottom-line" results -- such as games won, sales figures, or other analogous metrics -- but rather on reaching the maximum potential one can achieve -- either individually or as a team. The measure of this becomes self-evident through honest preparation, intensity of practice, selflessness, and so-on. End results, then, are simply byproducts of hard work that was paid up front. Other discussions center around concepts of teamwork, and how to handle people. These have value for everyone, not just leaders and players.
The book is an easy read, and very well written. You won't be disappointed with this one.

Words of wisdom from a master.......2007-07-06

Each page in this terrific book offers nuggets of wisdom from one of the greatest college basketball coaches of all time. John Wooden's UCLA teams won 10 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) championships in 12 years, including 88 consecutive winning games, setting legendary and enduring records. But the way Wooden's players behaved was even more impressive than the number of games they won. Never arrogant, the Bruins epitomized self-control and teamwork - unselfish, disciplined and intense. An outstanding tactician, Wooden recruited superbly talented athletes. However, he always believed that basketball was merely a vehicle for teaching his players about life and what really matters, hence this book of maxims and advice. Coach Wooden's principles about leadership and individual potential extend far beyond the basketball court. He does not define success just as victory, but as a full, complete team effort. We recommend this book to everyone, no matter what game you play or lead.

The John Wooden method of success........2007-02-02

When it comes to leadership and team building, few professions compare with the ranks of organized sports coaches. From the ranks of coaching we have been given a vastness of leadership training with which to shape and improve our lives. Every venue of athletics has made its' coaching contributions. From football, we have the hard nosed precision of Vince Lombardi and the stoic presence of Bear Bryant. Baseball has given us the lighthearted leadership of Casey Stengal and the chess game cunning of Jim Leyland. Boxing has produced such brilliant motivators as Lou Duva and the no-nonsense yet compassionate Eddie Futch. And basketball has been no exception from the explosive emotionalism of Bobby Knight to the intensity of Pat Summitt. But even among such greats as these, when it comes down to success, few can even be mentioned with the name of John Wooden.

His leadership and team building philosophy differs from many, lacking the emotionalism and intensity of what coaches typically display, and I wont go so far as to say Wooden's methods are better, but they certainly proved to be a championship building formula for him. In fact, Wooden even guarded against allowing emotions to reign supreme in his players.

The book focuses primarily on Wooden's 15 component Pyramid of Success. Wooden explains why each component is a part of the pyramid and why it is located where it is within the pyramid. There are also bits and pieces of letters to his teams as well as brief comments from his former players throughout the book.

I don't believe this is the best book with Wooden's name on it, but it is certainly, as expected, filled with sage advice ranging from simple profound statements to more complex principles of leadership, team building and ultimately, success. If you appreciate, as I do, that the coaching profession has produced some of the greatest leaders of the last century and you want insight from one of the best of the best, you'll appreciate this book.

John Wooden has figured out some of the secrets of life. And he passes them on directly, in a way that can be transformational for a reader.

John Wooden is a hero of mine. His own heroes include Abraham Lincoln and Mother Theresa. Like them, he is a treasure for all of us because his life and lessons demonstrate what it means to live to "our personal best" in a way that is simple, profound and so clear.

This book should be required reading in "Human Being 101".

We grow up hearing about the importance of developing " good character", not always knowing what it is, or just how to obtain it. All of Wooden's books give his personal guidelines for developing character and living a decent life, whether we are athletes, musicians, teachers, or anything else.
Wooden's teachings have stood the test of time. His life and those he has influenced are proof of that.
I use his wisdom for myself, and I pass it on to all my students. They all know who John Wooden is. His life blesses us all.

revealing, pleasant read.......2007-01-05

John Wooden is one of my heroes. When I was growing up, his teams were dominant, but more importantly, they made the game beautiful to watch. After he retired at the peak of his game, he quietly stepped off the stage. With the rush of books on leadership in the 1990's through the present, it was inevitable, and overdue, that folks take time to examine Coach Wooden's approach to leadership. This has led to a cottage industry in Wooden books.

This book is short, personal and focuses on life lessons learned from the narrative of Coach's life. It doesn't attempt to be weighty, just a good read, that imparts wisdom without hitting you over the head with it. It touches on each chapter of Coach Wooden's life, and particularly shows the infuence of his father, his high school and college coaches and his growth thru experience

This is a fun, easy read that leaves the reader wiser. Highly recommend

This is a great book to help any coach of any sport get a good feel for the right way to coach young players. Teach them good life lessons and skills. It gives an insight into a great coach and even greater man.

I loved the book, but I would have liked for it to be longer. It is a very quick read but is full of wisdom from one of the best coaches of all time.

Coach Wooden is the Monet of coaching. His philosophy and work ethic, both as a player and a coach, are unparalled. This book will instruct anyone on how to deal with adversity both on the court and in the game of life.

Inspiring glimpse into a master coach's life.......2007-01-13

John Wooden is perhaps America's greatest coach. His UCLA basketball team won ten national championships, including seven in a row. Concomitant with winning was his insistence on character and virtue rather than getting caught up with results.

This autobiography is a fascinating glimpse into Wooden's extraordinary life. It chronicles his life as a player (many forget that Wooden was elected to the basketball hall-of-fame as a player and coach), his coaching days (mostly at UCLA), and a little bit about his activities after his retirement. Interspersed in all of this are Wooden's coaching philosophy, pictures, box scores of the national championship games, and Wooden's opinion on how to improve the quality of NCAA basketball.

They Call Me Coach is tremendous for any sports fan, especially basketball. It can also be enjoyed by those who enjoy reading about what it takes to achieve success. Wooden was not a dictator, but imparted his insistence on doing one's best to his players with meticulous detail.

TCMC is not a complete autobiography, and it omits many aspects of Wooden's life. It is certainly not a "tell-all" account, nor is it perhaps the best book on articulating Wooden's coaching philosophy. For that I would recommend another of Wooden's books, appropriately titled Wooden. There are also others out there.

They Call Me Coach is a wonderful account of a man who as achieved true life success, and you will enjoy this read regardless of your previous knowledge on Wooden or college basketball.

Great advice from a Greater man.......2006-03-20

You can't miss with Wooden's thoughts, words and advice. If you're coaching yong people, he hits home lessons that every player and coach should know and understand. Even if you're just a parent or someone's business supervisor, read this book to learn how to better deal with and motivate those who rely on you for leadership. Don't let the coach down and pass these wonerful skills on to the next generation. Wooden's vision will live long past his coaching days. Find out all about it right here.

A good text for leadership.......2006-03-09

I purchased this book as part of a Ph.D. level class as a lesson in leadership. Coach Wooden shows his ability to lead and educate through his expertise in the fundamentals and the basics. He demonstrates his ability to change tactics and styles with different individuals, which is essential in good,effective leaders. I would recommend this book on several levels. At face value, it is an exceptional story about an exceptional coach and man. At a deeper level, I think it portrays a good example of how to lead and and how to set an example for those you are trying to lead.

This is a very short story about Mia's 16th birthday. It is very cute and filled with lots of moments between Michael and Mia that make you feel warm and fuzzy. Very Cute!!

Too good, too short.......2007-01-02

I'm not going to go over the plot with you,I'm just here to tell you what I like and dislike. What I like? That's easy. Meg Cabot has once again outdone herself with this novel. Like I said, I'm not going to go over the plot, so you will have to read it or wonder for the rest of your life(okay, exaggeration). Dislikes: Just one. IT IS NINETY-SIX PAGES! I know, I know. Book 4 1/2 was fifty pages. What is the problem here? I'll tell you: This isn't a in-between book. It is supposed to be equivalent to 150 page novels previously written by Meg Cabot. Not to mention the fact that 4 1/2 had pretty much NO plot, whereas this one has a real setting, story, and more than ten characters.
That is all I have to say. Oh, yeah, one more thing:
READ THIS BOOK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A must-read for all ages............2007-01-02

This book was great! Meg Cabot really outdid herself. However, I wish it were longer. There is certainly enough plot, but only 96 pages? Really.
All in all, I would say it is a great book. You would be best getting it at a public library, because for $9, you only get 96 pages[hardcover].

Sweet, but too short.......2006-11-10

I won't delve into the plot, since many other reviewers have already done so. Instead, I'll say that Mia is progressively coming into her own, as this installment proves. She may be nervous addressing parents and school officials, but finally she has learned to emphatically lay down the law with her friends, something she certainly had trouble with at the beginning of this series. However, I found it frustrating that the book was over so quickly, especially at full cover price. I highly suggest you purchase a used copy if you don't have lots of money to burn.

Happy Birthday Mia!
Sixteen years old now, but she doesn't want a huge party. She just wants a night alone with Michael, which doesn't happen often with her being a princess and all. But Grandmere tries to get her on a special episode of My Super Sweet Sixteen.
How will she get a night alone with Michael? HOW! This was a sweet, short book that makes me ache for the next one.

Not So Bitter, Not So Sweet.......2007-01-11

Megan McCafferty's edited collection of short stories "Sixteen" contains sixteen stories about being or turning sixteen.

If you aren't familiar with Megan McCafferty - she is the author of the wildly popular 'Jessica Darling' series, if you can call it that. Sloppy Firsts, Second Helpings, and Charmed Thirds (a fourth is on its way) are three books that cover a young woman's journey through most of high school and college. There is in fact a short story on Jessica Darling about the last 15 minutes she spends before her best friend Hope leaves town (which is exactly where the series picks up from shortly afterwards).

The other fifteen stories in the book are all extremely varied, but the majority of them are quite good. I'm not a short story fan by any means, but unfortunately have to tackle the task of writing one this term - and this book was so well-compiled and written it inspired me quite a bit. Some of my fave stories were probably "Infinity", "The Many Lives of Emily Milty", and "The Perfect Kiss" - most of them were really good, a couple were not my fave as they seemed to really stray from the subject and style of the book, but it's hard to judge what makes a good short story to everyone.

The one critique I do give to the authors of these short stories is there was a consistent theme of either - kissing (specifically first kisses or momentous kisses) or discovering/experiementing with being gay. Not all sixteen year olds are that confused about their sexuality - yet at least half of the stories in the book dealt with that topic, I guess to provoke some more intense emotions or meaning.

If you are expecting a novel specifically in the style of Megan McCafferty - don't. Her story is hers, just as each other's is their own. I personally found this to be a well organized collection, with plenty of hits to compensate for the couple of quasi-'misses'. If you like young adult fiction, you'll probably dig this book.

I don't disagree with a majority of the reviewers for this book. I thought nearly every story was amazing. My favorites were probably Cowgirls and Indie Boys, Relent/Persist, and Grief Diet. I think a bit of a problem was people were expecting one primary genre, like Sloppy Firsts and Second Helpings variety books, but this book offers a plethora of different authors, styles, and perspectives on the teen years. I was drawn to the more eccentric stories, but all readers can find one they like. I highly recommend this book.

I really enjoyed reading this book because it has so many different points of view on being sixteen. This book gives the reader a wide range of opinions from girls and boys. Megan McCafferty chooses a series of writers in her book to write a story about being sixteen. She said she choose a series of Authors with whom she respects and since there are many good pieces of writing in this book I have to say I agree with her and I also respect their writing too. Sixteen deals with many events that occur when turning sixteen such as learning to drive, getting your license, dealing with boyfriends/girlfriends, friendships and just life in general as a teenager. I have to say my favorite story is "Mona Lisa, Chad, and Me" by Carolyn Mackler. This piece of writing in the book deals with balancing a boyfriend and your friendships. This is my favorite because with me being sixteen I can really relate to this one particular experience, because I have also been through something similar. This is another reason why the book is so good because I believe there is a story in here for every one, even adults. I say Adults because this book can take them back to remember a lot of good times they had as teens and even help them relate to their own kids if they have any. Overall I really enjoyed this book and I would recommend it to any one who is up for some laughs and a pleasant read.

Some great stories... some not.......2005-07-25

I read all the stories, but some were not so enjoyable. I would recommend getting this from the library, or purchasing if you don't have high expectations of liking every single story in the collection. However, since there is a wide range of stories, I think everyone should be able to find some they enjoy. My personal favorites were "Cat got your tongue?" by Sonya Sones and "The Alumni Interview" by Devid Levithan. I also enjoyed the stories by Sarah Dessen, Sarah Mlynowski, Julianna Baggott, and Megan McCafferty. These stories, for me, made reading the book worthwhile.

In consideration..........2005-03-19

I must say I enjoyed the book mostly because of its variety of perspectives. Looking at the reviews other people have given, many people offered comments about stories being "too short" or "leaving you hanging" which I found mildly ironic because that is sort of the way most short stories are, and if you read any other compilation of short stories, you'll notice it is true with them also. I would reccomend it to those who enjoy stories leaning towards the abstract, or those who really enjoy a variety of reading selections.

When patrolling, Buffy comes across a girl being threatened by a demon. However, the girl punches the demon and puts both her fists through it.

Not a normal kid. Dawn ends up talking to her at school, and they eventually find out she has a demon father, who has some conqueror type plans for her rare superpowers.

Sub-par Buffy.......2003-09-01

Buffy and friends become involved with Arianna, a troubled young woman on the cusp of sixteen whose abilities rival those of Buffy herself. They try to befriend her and discover the truth about her. Scott Ciencin knows how to write the characters and has a good grasp of the show's vernacular, but he is less successful at crafting a compelling story. Most annoying, he gives Arianna an ability that would allow her to easily resolve the tension and uncertainty that torments her, yet provides an excuse for not exercising it that is very flimsy and contrived. The humor leans toward the cute and lacks the bite that characterizes the best writing of the series. If this is the type of story that had appeared on air, Buffy would not have lasted seven seasons.

Great Plot with Great Twists...but...a line is out of place........2003-06-20

What I mean by that is in this book the author takes a quote from the episode 'The Gift' from Season 5 and twists it. The original quote from Spike to Buffy in the episode went, 'I know I'm a monster, but you treat me like a man.' It was one of the most emotional moments of the season and showed us how Spike had evolved from something evil and hateful to something good and promising. It was a defining comment from him and was a preview of what was to come in the 6th and 7th seasons.
The author butchered the moment and morphed it into a new one he created himself of Spike telling Buffy in this book, 'I know I'm a monster, but your mom treated me like a man.' I mean, why would he do something like that? It didn't even make sense! Ugh, that being the only thing that ruined a 5 star rating, the rest of the book was pretty well written.

Dawn overhears a girl in school being mistreated by the infamous 'sweater mafia', or in other words, the popular girls and steps in.
Dawn becomes a target for the group as they seek revenge and Dawn begins to discover weird things about her new friend Arianna. For one, she can lift a thousand pounds without breaking a sweat and can take on her big sis The Slayer with no problem.
The more the gang tries to fing out about the mysterious girl the more they become confused. With unusual superstrength and healing power unknown to a Slayer, Arianna is harboring a dark secret and a dangerous legacy that could destroy everything...as soon as she becomes 16....

Written after Joyce's death and Dawn's revelation of being The Key, somewhere in the middle of the 5th season. Good portrayal of Buffy's struggle to deal with her mom's death and her guardianship of Dawn and her fear of the season's villian, the hellgod Glory finding Dawn finally. The author also touches on Spike's deep love for Buffy and his struggle to protect her and Dawn and how Buffy doesn't seem to want any of it.
Extremely good plot, just get rid of the twisted moment with Spike and Buffy.....

This is an okay read........2002-10-15

I love Buffy books, and when I read the back cover to this book, I was really excited to read it. When I was done, I felt that something was missing. Perhaps it could have used more plot twists.

On night when Buffy was on patrol, she comes across some demons, and to Buffy's suprise, she sees a girl that could handle herself aganist demons. The next day, Dawn befriends a girl that's picked on. Dawn quickly becomes her friend, but wonders why she won't stand up to those who are picking on her. Dawn brings the girl homes, and to Buffy's suprise, the girl that Dawn brought home is the same girl that could hold her own aganist demons. Buffy and the scooby gang set out to find out who this mysterious stranger is. When they find out who she is.....will any of them be safe. This is the coming of age for a demon.

The style of writing is okay. I feel it could have used a bit more of a plot twist.

Over is it was okay. If you're a Buffy fan, go ahead and read it. I read better Buffy books, but then, I also read worse.

Excellent story with some fresh twists.......2002-08-22

I took a while getting around to "Sweet Sixteen" since it was a YA, but found it definitely worth the visit. Ciencin's witty prose has the Buffy vernacular down cold, and he knows how to write a story that hooks you from page one. Excellent set-up in Chapter 1, and it just gets better from there. His mastery of the familiar personalities shows he is a fellow fan, and the emphasis on new characters gives the book a freshness that is invigorating. I'm amazed to see that this is Ciencin's Buffy debut; let's hope he'll be persuaded to do more.
