Book Description

From sweeping passion to taut suspense, Judith McNaught has entertained millions with a stunning array of emotions in nine dazzling bestsellers. In this beloved classic, "one of the best ever" (Rendezvous), two defiant hearts clash in a furious battle of wills -- in a glorious age of chivalry.

Abducted from her convent school, headstrong Scottish beauty Jennifer Merrick does not easily surrender to Royce Westmoreland, Duke of Claymore. Known as "The Wolf," his very name strikes terror in the hearts of his enemies. But proud Jennifer will have nothing to do with the fierce English warrior who holds her captive, this handsome rogue who taunts her with his blazing arrogance. Boldly she challenges his will...until the night he takes her in his powerful embrace, awakening in her an irresistible hunger. And suddenly Jennifer finds herself ensnared in a bewildering web...a seductive, dangerous trap of pride, passion, loyalty, and overwhelming love.

1 out of 5 stars A horrible heroine........2007-09-21

The heroine is too annoying to be likable. I pity the poor hero for being so gullible to her and the heroine so blind to her father and clan's people faults.

3 out of 5 stars Historical romance with zip.......2007-09-14

A Kingdom of Dreams is a well-plotted historical romance in the traditional vein. The virginal heroine is a plucky, rebellious Scottish lass who is seized from her convent school by her father's worst enemy, the dreaded English warrior known as The Wolf. Naturally the couple has major chemistry from the beginning, but there are all kinds of obstacles to their ever-after happiness. Rather than the Wolf taming the shrew, they tame one another.

The prose starts out stiffly and almost juvenile, but once the story gets underway, romance fans will enjoy watching the story unfold.

5 out of 5 stars Judith McNaught is a dream writer........2007-09-11

6 stars and more. This was my first exposure ever to romance novels 15 years ago and boy, did she REALLY set the high standard for me. KOD still remains my ultimate favorite romance novel (of all sub-genres). Trailing right behind are Paradise, Perfect, and all her historicals (not to be missed). I've also lost track of how many times I needed to reach for a tissue towards the end. I have yet to find a more poignant love story that grips at the heart as this one and I'm pretty sure it will remain that way for a very long time. It may not be everyone's cup of tea, but I absolutely adored it, my love for the love between Jennifer Merrick and Royce Westmoreland intensifying with each turning page. McNaught is truly one-of-a-kind and knows how to weave her stories beautifully and poignantly. As the titles suggests, this tale is a dream come true and still lingers close to my heart after over decade and a half.

Book Description

"Davis writes with fervor, vision, and keen moral appreciation of our condition. He encourages us to see what we fear to see, to say what we fear to say. This book is illuminating, challenging, fierce." Michael Eigen, author of The Sensitive Self, Rage, Ecstasy, Toxic Nourishment, Damaged Bonds andThe Psychoanalytic Mystic

Why is fear a dominant emotion in contemporary society? Why are politicians using words like 'terror', 'evil' and 'fundamentalism', and what effect is it having on public consciousness?

Answering these questions, Walter A. Davis taps into the cultural psyche to explore the link between ideology and emotional and psychological manipulation. Starting with the three topics that have preoccupied social discourse since 9-11 -- terror, evil and fundamentalism -- he shows that the Bush administration has been hugely successful in controlling and developing a new political climate through the creation of an almost hypnotic mass consciousness.

Davis's findings take us to the heart of the ideological paralysis of the Left, while offering an innovative approach to understanding contemporary history.

Davis fuses a psychoanalytic and philosophical framework to explain the relation between culture and political events, from the sado-masochist hysteria of Mel Gibson's The Passion of the Christ' to the atrocities at Abu Ghraib prison; and from the genocidal use of depleted uranium in Iraq to the apocalyptic language driving the Christian Right's assault on basic human rights.

He exposes the motives and belief-systems of this new American psyche and shows how it sustains the Bush administration's agenda. Illuminating how psychological needs govern political action, Davis reveals why the relationship between politics and public consciousness has massive implications for all of us beyond America's borders.

Walter A. Davis is Professor Emeritus in the Department of English at Ohio State University. He is the author of six previous books, including Inwardness and Existence: Subjectivity in/and Hegel, Heidegger, Marx and Freud (University of Wisconsin Press, 1989) and Deracination: Historicity, Hiroshima, and the Tragic Imperative (SUNY Press, 2001).

5 out of 5 stars Couch Time for America..........2006-04-25

Disturbing. Provocative. Perceptive.

This is one of those books that - out of all proportion to its size - is packed with unsettling insights into and theories about our uniquely American character. Though, perhaps, it could be equally applied to many different Western nations through modern history, it is particularly attuned to the angst-ridden United States of the early twenty-first century.

Professor Walter A. Davis, Professor Emeritus, Ohio State University, skillfully and artfully uses his command of language, theater, and philosophy to vivisect the type of persons that we have become in this post-9/11 nation and display for all to see the banality of evil that so marks our domestic and foreign policy.

Manipulated by fear and by the mindless pursuit of a lifestyle, which can only be sustained at the expense of others, we have collectively empowered an increasingly totalitarian form of neo-fascism. All that matters is expansion and power. Envy and Greed rule the day. Dr. Davis examines this unhappy state of affairs at length and diagnoses a form of psychosis peculiar to us - individually and collectively - a psychosis which begins with each of us as individuals, but ultimately manifests itself in the corporate body.

Through the use of predominantly psychoanalytical tools - the application of language; the use of classic literature, theater, and philosophy; and, clinical case studies of mental pathology - Dr. Davis proposes a new and radical way of analyzing what ails our spirit in this failing nation state.

The author does not hesitate to tear down the totems of our society. From the halls of academia to the seats of government - from the altars of fundamentalist churches to the boardrooms of Amerika, Inc. - no one is spared his scathing, all-too-accurate criticism. Doubtless, those who would most benefit from Dr. Davis' call to personal introspection and responsibility will immediately reject any suggestion of their own complicity in our society's ills. Sadly, it is also highly unlikely that most of our fellow Americans will interrupt their "happy" thoughts by attempting to read a book named "Death's Dream Kingdom." Such reading might cause too much psychic discomfort and result in too much guilt. Such reading would be too radical. Such reading would require too much thought.

Unfortunately for Dr. Davis and his work, the subject matter of his volume will neither be conducive to financial success nor to receiving the recognition that it deserves. The vast majority of Christians will dismiss him as a raving atheist and, thus, while waiting on the Rapture will miss valid criticisms of today's "feel good", "easy believe-ism". His academic colleagues will attack him as just another retired liberal arts professor and, thus, be content in their insular smugness and political-correctness. Politicians and corporatists alike will excoriate him as one of "those" Marxists and, thus, reject the totalitarian reality of latter-day capitalism. Instead of Orwell's boot "brought down on the human face forever," we are left with the image of a yellow smiley face doing the same.

In spite of the often brutal diagnostics that Dr. Davis brings to bear upon each of us, he is at heart a Romantic and, consequently, offers the prospect of redemption. Unfortunately, that redemption can only come through the self-psychoanalysis of our own madness - the confrontation of our own inner demons that we strive to hide and deny - the recognition of the truth about ourselves. Only by starting there with our psyche struggling with itself can change occur and the pathological processes at work in each of us begin to be reversed.

Finally, he points out in the closing paragraphs of his book how time limited we are in this historical moment and he calls for action by translating "one's inwardness into the terms of responsibility." With the looming crises of environmental catastrophe, a nuclear holocaust, and the rise of a rogue Totalitarian State, our time may indeed be short for self-correction. "Death's Dream Kingdom," is a much-needed diagnostic and therapeutic tool for correcting the insanity that so grips our land.

For the serious student of Chinese or Chinese literature, this set will give you a taste of the major works of literature in five miniature volumes. Pocket-sized with each chapter alternately in Chinese and English, sections numbered for quick comparisons between the two, they promise to super-charge my language study and have already done a lot for my motivation. My only complaint is the condensed books jump chapters at precisely the moment you are hanging on the edge of your seat to find out what happens next, but it's a great way to become familiar with the works and choose which one you like best to really sink the money into and buy in its entirety. A great value for the language and literature lover.

Book Description

In the Morland Dynasty series, the majestic sweep of English history is richly and movingly portrayed through the fictional lives of the Morland family. It is 1908, and in the height of Edwardian splendour, Jessie and Violet share a sparkling London debut. At Morland Place, Teddy's business is expanding and he brings home a new wife, to the anxiety of his sister Henrietta who knows there can't be two mistresses of the house. England is a land of confidence and opportunity, but below the surface troubles are stirring. The death of the King brings to a head the constitutional crisis, while abroad the flexing of Russian and German might are an ominous sign of the dangers that lie ahead.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic book in the Morland Place family saga!.......2007-08-05

A great book in the Morland Place saga. It's the early 1900's and there are several great story lines in this book. There is a debut of two of the Morland Place young girls in London. Morland Place, in York, is brought back to its previous glory. Edwardian England is at its finest. Read the Morland Place books in sequence and you'll enjoy a fine family saga and learn the history of England while you're at it. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars dangerous book.......2007-06-26

any of the incredible books in this amazinzg series is dangerous--housework doesn't get done, food isn't cooked, the cats have to beg for food, and i stay up hours past my bedtime.

i started reading the series a long time ago, when they were first published in this country. they disappeared from all the bookstores in my area after i'd read the fifth or sixth volume. my copies were lost in a move, i forgot the author's name, and i spent yearswishing i could read them again. then, they turned up in my amazon recommendations. i was thrilled and re-started the series.

after twenty-six volumes, i am still entralled with the story of the morlands. and i am amazed at the consistent excellence of the series. the writing, the plotting, the history--all are first rate. the characters are individuals, and reflect the character of their times in fascinating ways. the author has done a stunning job of creating stories that include all levels of society. the plot developments can be surprising, but are never unrealistic.

harrod eagles makes the social, political and military history come alive. she can write about domestic matters and developments, or battles, or the machinations of politicians, or relationships with equal skill and understanding.

these books are historical fiction at its best. the author creates plot lines that illuminate the major historical facts, and also creates characters the reader will care about.

5 out of 5 stars Not entirely a stand-alone read.......2004-06-04

Cynthia Harrod-Eagles' DREAM KINGDOM is the 26th book in 'The Morland Dynasty', so be forewarned: it's not entirely a stand-alone read: not if you want the complete rich tapestry of her Edwardian England setting. The social season of 1908 brings romance and pleasure to the Morlands as wealth and new technology come to life. But the war with Germany looms over all, and even new technologies and romance can't keep back the undercurrent of strife which will reach into the Morland family and change its course.

Book Description

On July 26, Clement Attlee became Prime Minister. The British looked forward to the New Jerusalem that Labour had promised. In this brilliant, savage and original book, Correlli Barnett shows the enormous double cost of New Jerusalem, and points out the destructive contradictions between mistaken strategies and their consequences.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars The Lost Victory.......2005-11-05

In this abridgement of his provocative "Decline and Fall" trilogy, Correlli Barnett describes the post-war Britain that many of us grew up in, and is now long gone. The current version, a successful market-driven economy, he cogently argues, was a real possibility after the war. In a hard hitting indictment he describes the foolishness and lack of moral courage of politicians on both the left and the right who sacrificed foreign loans, Marshal Aid, technical advantage and native entrepreneurial-ship on the altar of an impossible socialist dream. Fifty years later, and now the envy of Germany, France and the Scandinavian model, the land of Adam Smith is back on track. Barnett chronicles the slaying of three dragons on that road, a socialist command economy, organized labor and "The Establishment." Command economies have been consigned to the dustbin of history, trade unions have been rendered largely irrelevant by globalization, and the Establishment relegated to Merchant Ivory productions. Barnett is a brilliant and witty historian of those bitter times - and this book is an essential read for all students of the period.

1 out of 5 stars A HISTORY DREADFUL.......2002-05-31

THIS BOOK IS A DREADFULLY BAD EXAMPLE OF HISTORY WRITTEN WITH A BIAS. IT IS SINGULARLY BAD IN THAT AT EVERY TURN THERE IS A PERVERSION OF THE FACTS. IT IS AS IF A MOSLEYITE HAD WRITTEN AN INTERPRETATION OF THE PERIOD IN QUESTION I.E. THE NAZIS ACTUALLY COME IN FOR PRAISE & THE GERMANS, AT CERTAIN JUNCTURES IN HIS ARGUMENT, ARE HELD UP AS AN EXAMPLE OF HOW TO RUN HUMAN AFFAIRS. I SAY THAT THE POST-WAR BRITISH GOVERNMENT DID A FANTASTIC JOB OF MANAGING BRITAIN AFTER THE WAR GIVEN THE AWFUL CONDITIONS THEY INHERITED AFTER A CENTURY OF CONSERVATIVE & LIBERAL MIS-MANAGEMENT ( MADE MANIFEST BY THE TWO HORRIBLE WORLD WARS THAT ARE BARNETT'S MAIN POINTS OF REFERENCE )... IT IS TRULY SAD THAT A MAN LIKE BARNETT, WHO CAN CERTAINLY GRASP A HUGE AMOUNT OF INFORMATION, SHOULD SO ABUSE HIS TALENT. ONCE AGAIN IT SHOWS HOW EASY IT IS TO BE AN ARMCHAIR "HISTORIAN" RATHER THAN ONE WHO MAKES HISTORY.

    Book Description

Film has taught us to see the world afresh, but it could not picture its own birth. In The Dream That Kicks, Michael Chanan puts forward a theory of invention to show how cinematography was a product of the growing forces of nineteenth century capitalist production and traces the development of British cinema from its mystical origins in music halls to its emergence as a cultural commodity.

The Dream That Kicks combines astute textual analysis of individual films with detailed archival work of the industry. It situates cinema within its wider context to produce a thought-provoking exploration of its cultural and ideological implications. This paperback edition has been thoroughly revised and updated to take into account orhte recent work on early cinema.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Very Dangerous Dream Indeed.......2000-10-04

"The Dream that Kicks" by Michael Chanan is a classic book of the development (the so-called invention) of cinema. When the book first came out in 1980 it marked a turning point in the study of 19th century moving image. Now, updated for its 1996 edition, it remains as significant as when it came out originally; a very important and pertinent document.

This book was possibly the first that combined a number of perspectives to account for the developments that led to "cinema". As such it still remains one of a small number. Chanan presents the process of invention as resulting from the interplay of a number of factors ranging from discoveries in optics and the theory of perception to the expansion of the capitalist mode of production and the social forces it unleashed. In the course of the book he has a lot to say about all these aspects and their relationship to "cinema". A lot of research has gone in the writing of this book but it manages to avoid the dangers of being dry, boring or difficult. On the contrary it is readable, full of surprises and insight, and transmits to the reader the joy of discovering a history mostly forgotten and ignored.

Chanan discusses a lot of commonly held beliefs that are based on misconceptions. One such point is the explanation of the perception of moving images. Cinema is still very often explained by the phenomenon of persistence of vision. In one of the best chapters, Chanan outlines the development of the theory of perception since the beginning of the 19th century, which has established that persistence of vision plays only a relatively minor role, while the principal reason is the phenomenon of apparent movement, known also as phenomenon-phi. Another major aspect he deals with is the process of the invention of cinema. Chanan shows that cinema was developed by the combined efforts of hundreds of individuals, each one making a more or less significant contribution. The final conclusion of this issue is that the efforts to assign to one particular individual the title of inventor of the cinema are misguided, irrelevant and suspect. Other chapters include issues like patent conflicts; the structure of the music hall and theatre businesses in the 19th century; the invention and development of photography and celluloid. Another positive aspect of the book is its international character. Despite its subtitle ("The prehistory and early years of cinema in Britain") and the associated emphasis on the history in that country it doesn't cover only the developments there. Of course the emphasis is on Britain but, rightly, it covers developments anywhere in the world, as the early history of cinema was an international effort.

On the negative side is the emphasis Chanan puts on certain of his research findings. Even if they are interesting, they did not had to be listed exhaustively in the main body of the book. For example Chanan was able to trace the notes Friese-Greene (a British film pioneer) carried with him when he died, during a film industry meeting. The notes are of interest and fascinating but they do not really fit in his narrative. They would be excellent as an appendix or an extended footnote; even as subject of a separate article but not where they are included. Another negative aspect is the absence of illustrations. This aspect is important, as several of the devices and processes described can only be understood if demonstrated with drawings and photographs. However, these minuses are few and do not reduce the importance of this major book.

I'll make this short (since even though it purports to be of an expansive subject, the book itself is short): unengaging, unaccademic, unscholarly, with horrible citation. Wallace-Murphy and Hopkins don't seem to read classical languages, because whenever they cite a classical source, they have to take someone else's interpretation of it from another contemporary book. They cite their own or friend's works. Uses no primary sources. If you must read it, do so quickly and get on with better more authoritative books. Incidently, I didn't find the pictures very helpful, unlike another reviewer.

5 out of 5 stars WOW, THE GRAIL BASHERS FEEL THREATENED BY THIS ONE!.......2004-12-02

This is one of the books sold by Rosslyn Chapel bookstore; it is very good, and the "ancient" teachings about the Galactic alignments that can be very conducive to our enhanced consciousness are just recently corroborated in John Major Jenkins new book, Galactic Alignment. So, Rosslyn is one of the very good books on this part of the grail; it's just that the Inquisitors don't want you to think that!!

3 out of 5 stars Not so much about the Chapel, but good Templar read.......2004-11-12

I was expecting the book to cover the mysteries of Rosylyn Chapel, but it barely touches on its history.
Rather is delves into the world of the Templars and the early Catholic Church, which, facts and myths aside, in itself is interesting.
If you want to know more about the Templars, then this is a good book for you.
If you were looking for a book on Rosslyn Chapel, this might be interesting, but will leave you still seeking.

Many will come across this book in the same way I did -- as follow-up reading to the best-selling "Da Vinci Code." Although titled as a book on the Rosslyn Chapel, it covers much of the same ground regarding early Church history, the Knights Templar, etc. Unfortunately, it is perhaps the most petulant and self-serving book I have ever read. The authors seem to have written the book as a vehicle to express rage against the Catholic church. You don't have to be a fan of the church to be put off by the transparent force-fitting of the facts into the authors' agenda. I bought the book because I wanted more factual background relating to the "Da Vinci Code" material, but after reading Wallace-Murphy's work, I did not feel that I could rely upon his information. Many of his most challengeable statements are footnoted, but the footnotes simply refer to early writings by the author on the same subject matter. There is also much argument of the "hey can you believe this?" quality. Readers looking for dispassionate historical information will want to look elsewhere.

    5 out of 5 stars Rosslyn - an explanation.......2004-07-29

Finally, someone manages to interpret Rosslyn - and to uncover and interpret a lot more than that.

I can accept that a lot of critics will read this (the book, not my review!) and try to discount a lot of what is stated, but read it with an open mind and you might find something that has been missing - and I don't mean anything from the book.

I would love to hear from anyone who reads this book and to discuss their interpretation. I'd love to discuss where it leads them and what their next book was after reading this one.
