A Story of Tender Truths
About a Woman’s Desperate Efforts
to Shelter Her Family

Determined to raise her children on her own terms, Emma suddenly finds herself alone and pregnant with her third child, struggling to keep her family secure in the remote coastal forest of the Washington Territory. With loss and disappointment as her fuel, she kindles a fire that soon threatens to consume her, making a series of poor choices that take her into dangerous relationships.

As clouds of despair close in, she must decide whether to continue in her own waning strength or to humble herself and accept help from the very people she once so eagerly left behind.

Based on a True Story

Rich with historical details and vivid characters, A Tendering in the Storm poignantly gives voice to a mother’s fears for her family and a woman’s search for her truest self.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome historical fiction with "edge"..........2007-08-08

A Tendering in the Storm is a must-read for historical fiction lovers. If you want insight into the hardships from the 19th century pioneers who left everything to move west hoping for a better life, then you'll love this story. If you find oppressive religious groups intriguing, you'll want to check this story out. If you'd like to reflect on how few rights women had in the mid-1860s then this is the book for you! To quote a cliche, We've come a long way, baby!

After finding the author's bio and reading that she is a certified social worker, I now see where she got her insight for this book. No dysfunction is easy to understand. All people are complex. But there are certain truths that exist in human nature and the author insightfully captured them all. Her illumination of the human heart and certain domestic issues is superb. I can't say what those issues are or I'll blow part of the storyline, but I will say that the subtly of how people are lured from their good senses--because of sometimes desperate situations--is expertly shown in this novel.

I loved this story. It's real. It's deep. It's edgy...and it's not at all boring.

5 out of 5 stars So realistic...truth better than fiction!.......2007-07-22

A fictionalized true story doesn't always hit the mark, but Jane Kirkpatrick has got the gift! In the first book, "The Clearing in the Wild", one felt the harsh northwestern weather, tempered by the breaks of warmth and beauty that made it all worthwhile. And, what is more appealing than a heroine with an indomitable spirit! "A Tendering in a Storm" was eagerly awaited, as the story of Emma lingered long after the first book was back on the shelf. The story doesn't disappoint - as it just points out the reality that not everyone lives up to expectations, and sometimes the most heartfelt conviction must be set aside to do the right thing for those we love. Emma is a remarkable, strong, resiliant woman, and in these books, we learn how difficult it was to possess and hold on to those attributes in pioneer days. Could any of us show that strength if confronted with Emma's obstacles? It makes us ask the question. I love this series - it reminds me a bit of another written by Janice Woods Windle, about the "True Women" of the Texas "Hill Country" - two other fictionalized accounts based on real women fighting against unbelievable odds. Read these two while you're waiting for Kirkpatrick to write the third in this series. I'll be watching for it!

5 out of 5 stars Historical fans won't want to miss this series........2007-06-06

Jane Kirkpatrick's award-winning writing makes A TENDERING IN THE STORM, the second installment in the Change and Cherish historical series, a pleasure to savor.

As the story continues from book one, A CLEARING IN THE WILD, readers find the feisty Emma Wagner Giesy living in the mid-1800s in the Washington Territory with her husband, Christian Giesy, and little ones Andy and Kate. The young couple has made some breaks with the German American religious colony they came with out West, but not enough distancing for Emma's taste. Wilhelm Keil, the leader of the Missouri Bethelites colony, has settled the majority of the group in a different location in Oregon, which he's dubbed "Aurora Mills" after his daughter. The story is told through the eyes of both Emma and Louisa in first-person, alternating chapters.

Kirkpatrick deftly shows the conflict for Christians of that time period between a desire for security and absolute certainty in how to live a Christian life and the need for independence, and embracing the messiness and mystery of faith. Wilhelm, the powerful leader of the colony and last word on all religious matters, is a more sympathetic figure here than he was in book one, but still shows the positive and negative effects of what happens when power and religious authority are invested in one person. Emma is his antithesis --- rebellious, independent and longing to do things her own way. In her character, we see the problems of Christians who disassociate themselves from community and try to do everything themselves. In Louisa's, we see the pitfalls of insecurity and giving up our independence.

Both ways of living are flawed yet also somewhat attractive. Through them, Kirkpatrick shows how giving up thinking for ourselves and letting someone else do it for us can lull us into a false sense of security, and alternatively, how refusing to let our Christian community keep us accountable for decisions we make and offer perspective and help can lead to other sorts of disasters. The secret, it seems, is somewhere between what Emma desires and what the community desires, which is the tension that holds much of the series together.

Characterizing the novel is an excellent sense of the place and time period in which these two women lived. Kirkpatrick weaves in mentions of local plants Emma might have foraged for, such as wild celery, wild raspberry roots and wapato (Indian potatoes) and includes interesting sketches of different plant uses. Historical details abound, culled from Kirkpatrick's research into the true-life story of Emma on which the story is based. Family letters, photographs, artifacts and help from her modern-day descendants give Kirkpatrick's work a ring of authenticity but, at the same time, doesn't get in the way of good fiction or interrupt the flow of the narrative. A difficult balance --- and one that Kirkpatrick admirably achieves.

Plenty of disasters are on the way for Emma, and readers will wince at some of the choices she makes. Many will applaud, however, Emma's strong belief that being a woman does not make her less than a man (as the patriarchy of her colony implies) and that it is important to question the theology that the colony has been relentlessly spoon-fed by Wilhelm. Readers will enjoy seeing Emma's gifts unfold and watching her grow as a woman of faith and as a mother who cares deeply for her children. Historical fans won't want to miss this series.

This is an excellent read! I've read all of Jane's books & this is right up there with my favorites! Emma, the main character, everyone can identify with. I finished reading the book yesterday & can't quit thinking about Emma & the life she led & how knowing that could make my choices better. The story takes a twist you don't expect & keeps your interest. Definitely read this one! Can't wait for the next one in 2008! Thanks for writing Jane!!!!

Jane Kirkpatrick's A Tendering in the Storm is based on a true story, and in it, Kirkpatrick has woven the threads of Emma's life into a touching novel which leads us along life's journey with a woman whose actions are often clouded by her own interpretations.

But Emma is not the only one who misjudges others. As the community struggles to build a fledgling town in a rugged land, Emma fights to build her own life out of an unforgiving wilderness. Choices, both good and bad, are made, and Emma and the community must work to live with, or change, the consequences.

While the historical and cultural details make are delightful, the reader will most often be struck by the fact that Emma's choices are not that different from those we each must face in our lives today.

5 out of 5 stars The only book you need.......2007-10-08

This is a great book for scrapbookers. It is one of the best I have, and I have a lot of books. This book is perfect to help you make more creative pages. It is easy to follow and you can mix and match pages. It is perfect for the person who wants to use 5 or 6 or more pictures for their pages, but can't figure out how to get them to fit. There are plenty of layout page books out there, but I have never seen one that actually tells you the exact measurements to cut. You can make pages pretty quick and they are really nice. It is a must have, I highly highly recomend it.

5 out of 5 stars It's Becky Higgins sketches taken a step further.......2007-05-15

I've been a huge fan of Becky Higgins sketches because they give me a blueprint for my scrapbooking layouts. A friend recommended Cherish to me, and I was skeptical at first because I've bought too many scrapbook "how-to" books over the years. Nevertheless, I bought it, and I loved it immediately. If you love Becky Higgins' sketches, you absolutely flip over this book. Not only do you get a sketch for your layout, but you get paper and picture sizes as well. In fact, you even get a diagram of how to best cut your coordinating papers to minimize waste! I just completed a [...]scrapbook for my son's teacher, and I used this book to do it. The final album was incredible! If you like using sketches for your scrapbooking, you need to buy this book.

5 out of 5 stars Valuable resource.......2007-05-09

Being new to scrapbooking, it is sometimes hard to create a layout from scratch. The patterns in this book help to get the creative juices flowing whether you exactly copy a pattern or take elements of the design to enhance your own ideas. Even veteran scrapbookers can benefit from the wealth of page layouts. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Great scrapbooking book!.......2007-05-09

This book has beautiful scrapbooking pages laid out with instructions on dimensions to cut your paper (so that you get the most out of your patterned paper), ideas for changing the layout slightly, and techniques for papercrafting/stamping/scrapbooking. You could make hundreds of different pages using just this book! IT's the best scrapbooking book I've seen!

2 out of 5 stars A depressing reading experience........2007-04-27

For me, this book was just too depressing. This poor heroine went from one catastrophic experience to another. And the author didn't even give her time in between to get some kind of mental balance in order to move forward with her life. If even half these things had happened to a real person, she would have been a raving lunatic.

Ms Anderson used very graphic language to describe the carnage associated with the death of everyone on the wagon train. She allowed her heroine to witness not just the deaths of all her family, friends, and neighbors but to also witness the brutal rape of the women, including her mother. This accounting actually made me queasy just reading it. After Race had managed to pull off an incredible miracle in rescuing Rebecca, Ms Anderson then had the bad guys find her again and try to rape and kidnap her. It was just one awful situation after another. The descriptions seemed to go on forever, in the most graphic detail possible. It weighed me down with a huge feeling of gloom and doom. And then to have Rebecca not only consent to have sex with Race, but to enjoy it - well, that was just too much for me to understand. It had only been a month since she had witnessed the rape and murder of each and every woman on that wagon train!! Totally unbelievable.

Also, I understand that Race was an uneducated man. I understand that he did not feel that Rebecca could ever love him because she was so much "above" him but, goodness gracious, I got tired of the ungrammatical manner of his speech. Yes, it reflected his upbringing but it certainly did get hard to read after the first 100 pages. Perhaps if I had been enjoying the story I could have been more charitable but I was not liking any of it. I kept reading because I hate to give up on a book and because I sincerely hoped it would get better. It didn't.

If someone is bored this summer and wants to perform a little service for me, try counting the number of apostrophies this author used in this book. Everything was: eatin', ridin', shootin', thinkin', ropin', lovin',singin', talkin', etc. PLEASE, PLEASE, give me an "ing" once in a while. Also, if all the men were forced by this author to say "ain't" then why did she make them say "isn't" every once in a while? It threw me off balance each time it happened.

Not recommended. I have read Catherine Anderson books before and have been disappointed each time. This finishes it for me. I will not try again.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent: Romance with Substance.......2007-04-10

This was a great book! I recently read a short story by Catherine Anderson, which prompted me to seek out more of her books. I'm a die-hard historical romance fan, but sometimes the same-old formula does get old. This book was so refreshing because Anderson brings Race's emotions to life brilliantly. She does this with Rebecca's feelings as well, but everyone expects the women in romance novels to be emotional, while the men usually realize they love the heroine because they are overcome with a desire so powerful that it's different from the desire they've felt for all their previous women. Give me a break! It's so wonderful to see an author portray tough men who can feel emotions beyond just lust. Rebecca's panic attacks did wear on the nerves, but when you consider that the book only spanned a couple of months after her tragic losses, you start to see how much her personality and strength really did transform! The development of Race's and Rebecca's friendship and ultimate love was done with so much depth, and in the end both of them possessed different but equal strengths. Also, I'm happily married, but I fell head over heels in love with Race myself -- good thing he's just a character in a book!

5 out of 5 stars Cherish.......2006-06-28

Catherine Anderson has a way of spinning a story that makes you feel good after reading it.

2 out of 5 stars A Woman to Cherish .......2004-11-30

Rebecca Morgan's life has been turned upside-down. While en route to Santa Fe where her family intends to relocate, they are viciously attacked. Rebecca, the sole survivor, witnesses the brutal murder of her loved ones and falls into a deep shock.

Ex gunslinger Race Spencer now lives a respectable life as a rancher, but he is lonely...until the day that he happens upon Rebecca. She is alone and terrifed, and though Race isnt quite sure what to do with her, he knows that he cant leave her alone to fend for herself. Race takes Rebecca into his care and a deep love blooms between the two of them.

I had such high hopes for this book. I love a story where the main players are traveling and have lots of time to be alone together, but "Cherish" was a challenge for me to finish. The pace was extremely slow, but my main complaint was with the characters - Rebecca especially. She was so annoying and grasping and dependant on Race, I honestly dont know how he didnt suffocate. I realize under the circumstances that Rebecca felt vulnerable, but her reactions and her all around personality as a whole just grated. I really couldnt stand her.
Race was a good guy, but boring.
Basically, I cant say that "Cherish" was lousy, but I wouldnt recommend it.

4 out of 5 stars Cherish.......2003-10-31

Rebecca Morgan goes into shock when her family is murdered in front of her. Race Spencer comes to her rescue and thinks she looks like an angel. He takes care of her in her while she is in need of protection and he soon falls in love with her. The story moves fast. It's funny despite all the bad things that happen. The characters are endearing and likeable. Rebecca seems is so afraid, but Race helps her to become a stronger person. They help each other to become stronger people. The ending was good. There's a nice epilogue, too.

This a delightful book. David Muench's ability to use light and contrast to capture the varied landscapes of Arizona is unsurpassed. He truly has a gift.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful photos, wide variey of landscapes.......2000-07-17

This is a wonderful coffee table book packed with a wide variety of spectacular photos of Arizona. It is a stunning display of the tremendous variety found in Arizona's natural habitat. Muench focuses on different aspects of the landscape including light, form, life and ecology. Captions tell where the photograph was taken with some brief commentary. A short essay by the photographer leads off each section with some of his personal thoughts and insights.

You will find an awesome view looking up through the trees to the sky, and the beautiful azure color of the Colorado River contrasting against white and rust colored rocks. Views of waterfalls, snow-capped mountains, autumn leaves and desert sands will take your breath away. Natural rock formations and cactus plants are seen in a new light as they become elegant sculptures. Endless, brilliant blue skies are captured against fields, mountains and red rock formations. Close-up of photos vibrant pink cactus flowers and sunny yellow poppies will brighten your day. You also get an occasional glimpse of lush green trees and plants.

As with all of Muench's books this one is printed on quality glossy paper with the highest of production values doing justice to the photography. As a Muench fan this is a treasured addition to my library.

A Time to Cherish

For Labor Day weekend, Christy Miller is on a houseboat at Lake Shasta. What could be better? She’s about to find out! Before they know it, both Christy and her best friend, Katie, are receiving some unexpected male attention. But somehow these best friends are at odds just when they should be having the most fun together. Christy soon realizes that sometimes you have to stand back and let people make their own decisions, even when they’re headed for a fall. And although life is never perfect, this is definitely a time to cherish.

Sweet Dreams

Christy Miller’s senior year is delicious, especially the time she spends with Todd. But her best friend, Katie, is struggling—she’s realized she needs to break up with Michael. It’s not easy! Fortunately both Doug and Disneyland help Katie to cheer up. Christy is learning to let go and get out of the way so that her friends can become who they’re meant to be...even when it jeopardizes her own sweet dreams.

A Promise Is Forever

Christy Miller’s going to Europe! It’s a three-week missions trip with Doug, Katie, and Tracy. First stop: London for some sightseeing, and then a castle in the English countryside for group training. Christy is so excited to be headed for Belfast with her friends—despite some tension among them. But when plans go topsy-turvy at the last minute, Christy must face her fears and realize that some things are more important than her own comfort...and that even when she can’t foresee the end result, a promise truly is forever.

Story Behind the Book

“The Christy Miller series was actually born when a group of thirteen-year-olds challenged me to write a novel. I’d been questioning the content of their favorite books when they said, ‘Why don’t you write a book for us?’ I told them no, I only wrote picture books. But they persisted: ‘How hard could it be? We’ll even tell you what to write! We want a love story with teenagers at the beach.’ And there you go. Summer Promise first released seventeen years ago and is now translated into five languages. I continue to hear from readers all over the world, many girls saying that they gave their life to Christ after reading Summer Promise . I love that!” —Robin Jones Gunn

5 out of 5 stars The Christy Miller novel that fans have been waiting for.......2007-06-27

Christy Miller has been waiting years for longtime love interest Todd to make a commitment. In A TIME TO CHERISH, the 10th installment in Robin Jones Gunn's Christy Miller series, Christy and her friends set off on a summer adventure onboard a houseboat, which just might help the on-again off-again couple take the next step in their relationship.

Sure enough, the romantic scenery and lots of pushing from Christy's overbearing Aunt Marti do the trick, and Christy and Todd finally declare themselves a couple. Naturally, Christy could not be more excited. As she revels in the joy of being able to call Todd her boyfriend, plans for the future go into overdrive. While Aunt Marti begins thinking ahead to college degrees and their wedding, Christy attempts to simply slow down and enjoy the moment.

However, even this proves to be tough, as best friends Katie and Doug do not necessarily share in her enthusiasm. Doug has had a crush on Christy for years, so her relationship with Todd has put an end to his hopes. And while Katie is happy for the new couple, it only reminds her that she is still missing a significant other in her life. Determined for Katie to be just as happy as she is, Christy begins a series of disastrous attempts to set her up with Doug.

As it turns out, though, Katie might not need Christy's help at all. When they return to school for their senior year, Katie immediately becomes infatuated with an intriguing exchange student from Europe, and he is certainly returning her attention. Christy tries to warn Katie that the relationship might be dangerous, but Katie refuses to listen to her and their friendship reaches a breaking point. Is Christy just jealous, or is Katie really heading for trouble?

A TIME TO CHERISH is the Christy Miller novel that fans have been waiting for. After nine books filled with "will they or won't they" drama, Christy and Todd finally decide to make it official and begin dating. Avid readers of the series no doubt will be relieved to see the long, drawn-out drama come to an end. The book also manages to deal with complicated relationships between family, friends and significant others in a realistic and positive way. At the same time, Gunn leaves A TIME TO CHERISH with an open ending that certainly will have readers eager for more adventures with Christy Miller.

5 out of 5 stars Best volume yet!.......2007-03-28

This is my favorite volume of the young Christy Miller books. I cried over the last two so much. I love when Christy and Todd are together, they're so perfect for each other! I've read all of the Christy books, and all of them made me want a hero like Todd.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible!.......2007-03-25

No two ways about it, I love these books, and having a three-in-one version makes it all the better. This book contains the concluding volumes in the Christy Miller series, and it's interesting to see how she's progressed from Summer Promise.

In a Time to Cherish, Christy's relationship with Todd couldn't be better as they offically define that they're boyfriend-girlfriend. However, Christy's relationship with her best friend, Katie, on the the other hand, isn't going so well when Katie, desperate for a boyfriend and feeling left out, begins dating Michael, a non-Christian. This story was enthralling, and included some very sweet moments between Christy and Todd. It really inspired me to 'hold out for that hero.'

In Sweet Dreams, after Katie's painful break-up with Michael comes slow healing, and Christy's beginning to think that everything is good again. However, she has no idea that she'll soon be faced with one of the hardest decisions she's ever had to face. I cried at the ending of this book, yet it hit me hard, making me wonder if I could make the same sacrifice as Christy did.

A Promise is Forever would have to be one of my favorite books in the whole series. A large period of time has elapsed since Sweet Dreams, and we find Christy traveling to England for a mission's trip with Doug who's her new boyfriend, Tracy, and Katie. She expects the trip to be a good way to serve God, but she doesn't anticipate any of the speed bumps along the way, such as conlict in her group and trouble with Doug, but most of all, being sent to Spain to serve, away from the rest of her friends. This book will have you in tears at it's touching ending. A fun thing was that we're introduced to Sierra Jensen, Robin Jones Gunn's next book series. Having read the Sierra Jensen books already, it was interesting to see Sierra from Christy's point of view.

Check these books out!

I love this series. Robin Jones Gunn fills each book with drama, adventure, romance, and mystery. Every time I get one of Gunn's books, I can't put it down. I would definitely reccomend this book and all her other books to any teen girl.

This book is wonderful, exciting to the very end. Like all of LaVyrle Spencer's books, a must.

4 out of 5 stars A Sweet Romance.......2005-09-14

The pace of this book is quite fast - the entire book is focused on the romance of Lee & Sam (the couple). Unlike most romance novels - there is no real background plot. The story deals with how Lee Walker, a divorced mother of two boys (they don't live with her) struggles with working in a male-dominated industry (she is a construction estimator) with a pig of a male boss. She meets Sam Walker, a man who co-owns his own construction firm when the two accidentally swap suitcases at the airport on a business trip unbeknowst to either of them. She meets him later on when they end up bidding for the same construction job. Recognising each other's names - they each collect back their respective suitcases after having opened them with surpise earlier (and investigated the contents!). With a massive chip on her shoulder about her Indian heritage and lost confidence in what she believes as her failure as a wife and mother, Lee is antagonistic towards Sam Walker from the moment they meet. Suspicious of his motives, dubious of his character after discovering a porno mag in his suitcase Lee has no intention of giving Sam the time of the day. Sam sets out to charm her and slowly but surely wins her over. After being forced to quit her job, she is offered a position from Sam at his firm. Wary, but aware the deal is a generous one, Lee accepts with reservations. After all, he is by all indications, interested in pursuing a relationship with her. Can she take the risk of an office romance? Will she risk her wary heart again? Can she trust his motives? Lee struggles with her personal issues as Sam ardently pursues her headlong into a relationship.

The story is a good one but is left with an unanswered question which I'm sure many a reader would like to know the answer. After the fast pace of the book, while there is a happy ending, the reader is feeling incomplete because of it. The ending should have been better constructed. It is rather light-hearted and while that is okay, it would have been nice to have a deeper scene where the two exchange tender words as well, and reaffirm their love.

3 out of 5 stars Something lacking?.......2005-07-23

Generally I found this book a very good read. I just felt at the end the reader is left hanging. As anothers have mentioned the book maybe just too short to develop the plot fully.

3 out of 5 stars Average.......2005-05-17

I have read almost all of Lavyrle Spencer's books and, in comparison to her other writings, this one leaves something to be desired. Keep in mind that I am only comparing this to Ms. Spencer's other books, not to all other romance novels in general.

I just felt that the character's relationship was not as well developed as those of some of her other storylines. By the time they have declared their love for each other, Sam and Lee have barely spent any time together. It is hard to conveive that they could have fallen in love over nothing more that a short weekend. On top of that, Sam seems so nonchalant and unaffected by Lee that it is a surprise that he has any real feelings for her at all, much less that they apparently run so deep. As the male lead, he is so different from any of the other's in the books that I have read by Lavyrle. He comes across as almost unpassionate about anything that might be developing with Lee. Part of the problem might be the length of the book -- most of her others are fairly long and this one was about half the normal length. By far, not the worst romance novel I have read but, this book cannot even begin to compare to the powerhouses that are "The Gamble", "Vows", and "Seperate Beds".

5 out of 5 stars Spencer Perfection.......2005-01-20

LaVyrle Spencer is perfect in her craft. She brings you into a story from moment one and leads you through the next 6 months or so of a person's life with no detail left unturned.

Lee and Sam meet on a business trip in a very funny way and their relationship takes off. Spencer fills you in on the details of their life, their homes, their jobs and their relationship unlike any other writer I've ever read. I adore reading her books. This one is set in the early 80's and is so precise in it's decor and style of that genre. The intmacy is hot yet done in the classy style of Spencer and appears at all the right times. Not too much, not too little.

Again, she takes all the right elements and blends them together the way we want to read it.

Buy this book. It's definitely re-read material.

Book Description

Young Emma Wagner chafes at the constraints of Bethel colony, an 1850s religious community in Missouri that is determined to remain untainted by the concerns of the world. A passionate and independent thinker, she resents the limitations placed on women, who are expected to serve in quiet submission. In a community where dissent of any form is discouraged, Emma finds it difficult to rein in her tongue–and often doesn’t even try to do so, fueling the animosity between her and the colony’s charismatic and increasingly autocratic leader, Wilhelm Keil.

Eventually Emma and her husband, Christian, are sent along with eight other men to scout out a new location in the northwest where the Bethelites can prepare to await “the last days.” Christian believes they’ve found the ideal situation in Washington territory, but when Keil arrives with the rest of the community, he rejects Christian’s choice in favor of moving to Oregon.

Emma pushes her husband to take this opportunity to break away from the group, but her longed-for influence brings unexpected consequences. As she seeks a refuge for her wounded faith, she learns that her passionate nature can be her greatest strength–if she can harness it effectively.

5 out of 5 stars Read This Book!.......2007-05-12

In my opinion, this is Jane's best book since All Together In One Place. Its value is not so much in its historical perspective, although the history is very interesting. The value is in the way it addresses the challenges of life, especially for women. This book takes on the struggle of being an individual and at the same time being part of a community and the necessity of collaboration with give and take. The third important element overall is faith. This is so relevant in today's world at every level from small groups of people to the global economy! There is a need to have a voice and be who we are, and yet sharing and caring and community are essential for our survival. Ultimately, it is necessary to be able to just have faith. Balancing these seemingly opposing forces is what life is all about! I also am impressed at the way Jane addressed the issue of domestic violence. Nice going, Jane. I look forward to the next book in the series.

2 out of 5 stars A Clearing in the Wild.......2007-03-17

Found the book boring and it often made me angry. It's fiction but based on true story. Hard to believe women put up with such nonsence.

4 out of 5 stars Truth more fascinating than fiction!.......2007-01-11

You'll suffer right along with these pioneers searching for a new home in the Pacific Northwest. Kirkpatrick makes us feel the cold, whipping rains and every degree of the discomfort! And, she makes you long to tell that charismatic leader of the colony that he isn't the only one with the ability to receive God's guidance. You'll feel your hackles rising when, after all the hardships endured, what seemed like an answer to all prayers, falls flat. Thank goodness for Emma's chutzpah and backbone! This is a great read, and I'm looking forward to the next installment of this story.

5 out of 5 stars What a Find.......2006-10-05

Jane Kirkpatrick is an unexpected treasure; like finding an Armani suit at Goodwill on 50% off Saturday! Her literary style makes you want to savor each word, chewing on each nuance while her stories demand that you gobble them up and enjoy. Based on a true story, A CLEARING IN THE WILD is the first book in her latest trilogy. In it she explores not only the vast country between Bethel, Missouri and Willapa Bay, Washington but also the hearts, minds and spirits of those pioneers who braved the unknown to find a safe haven for themselves and their families where they could live independently while practicing their faith.
A CLEARING IN THE WILD tells the story of how an entire community of German Christian believers formed a community in which they could live together based on the Biblical concepts found in the book of Acts. They worked together for the common good, shared what they had and made decisions based on God's word. They reached out to others, taking them into the fold and worked to follow not only the Golden Rule but the Diamond Rule which directs us to help others to live even better than we do. When rumblings of the conflicts between the North and the South began to reach them, their leader Wilhelm Keil, proposed that scouts travel west to find a place where the community could escape being drawn into the war that was inevitable.
Emma Wagner is a young woman who represents the aspects of the human spirit that spark both progress and failure, independence and rebellion. It is that spark that cannot be smothered by Utopian concepts that require everyone to be equal. I am convinced that such a peaceful, harmonious ideal cannot be achieved anywhere but in Heaven itself. But here on earth we have people like Emma, who love God and their fellows, yet will strive for what they want, for the chance to be heard, for the right to stand out.
Emma marries Christian Giesy who is 20 years her senior but the love they had for each other was true and ageless. It was a love that carried them across the country on horseback at a time when threats and dangers accompanied them every difficult mile of the way. Their conflicts and reconciliations formed a strong foundation upon which an entire community was eventually built; a community where women not only worked along side their husbands but were heard and valued as well.
If you haven't read Jane Kirkpatrick this would be a wonderful place to get acquainted with a great writer who makes history come alive and allows you to participate in a life we've only imagined.

    4 out of 5 stars a sweet pastoral romance.......2006-03-15

"To Love and Cherish" is a lovely book - in the author's note, Gaffney says that she was using Thomas Hardy as a model and trying to capture a moment of rural prosperity and peace before the great upheavals of the industrial revolution. Both of these things really come through; the countryside, the changing of the seasons, the beauty of nature is so present, so lovingly described in the book that it's like a third major character, with Christy and Anne.

And it's a very sweet book, too. It would have to be - the hero, Christy, is a humble, intelligent, thoughtful, moral vicar. He's so lacking in guile and cynicism that he's almost simple, so honest and generous that he can be gullible.

Anne is, essentially - not as worldly as she thinks she is. She's lived an itinerant life, half-abandoned by an artist father who paid no attention to her and totally abandoned by a husband who really paid no attention to her. She's made do for herself and her bohemian upbringing has at least on the surface left her with a permissive, athiestic code of morals.

Much of the book takes place through Anne's diary entries (it switches between the diary and a straight omniscient narrative) and these are really beautiful - both Christy and Anne are amateur artists and so Anne's diary is vivid and colorful, with lovely allusions; it also sets a tone of keen self-reflection - she is brutally honest with herself, a little wry as well.

The novel is very character driven and the romance between Christy and Anne proceeds very slowly. Because Anne is married for much of the book, what you really read is the birth of a friendship; both of them finding, where they least expect it, a valuable and necessary companion. This slow, guarded approach, mixed with the lush and almost haunting description of the beauties of the countryside, gives the book a sort of dreamy and very idyllic feeling. It's like a song about a shephard and a shephardess, singing in the fields to one another - that kind of glittering pastoral innocence.

I'm not giving this book five stars for several reasons. I didn't really like Anne's conversion; it bothered me that while Christy is steady as a rock, the foundations of Anne's character shift a great deal over the course of the novel (the more superficial aspects of her personality remain intact). Second, I can believe that Anne will be happy in a little village, that she grew deeply invested in the people and activities that mark village life - but I was put off by the rejection of travel that comes at the end of the book. It sets up an either/or dichotomy that I found really disappointing. Finally, the last section of the book - which, unlike the rest, is full of typical-for-a-romance adventure and adrenaline - felt like a betrayal of the book that Gaffney had started out writing.

5 out of 5 stars Refreshing, beautifully written story.......2004-09-09

This book was a delight to read because of Patricia Gaffney's beautiful prose and the unusual story line. The hero in this story, Christy, is a not a typical historical romance rakehell but, in fact, a vicar in a small town. The heroine, Anne (Lady D'Aubrey) is Christy's childhood best friend's unhappy, cynical wife. The characters are amazingly well drawn and sympathetic even in their faults. The friendship that develops between Anne and Christy and their eventual mutual (and, of course, forbidden!) attraction is very believable. I *loved* the character of Christy, a truly honorable and good man, full of good humor and optimism. What a refreshing change from the the usual angst-ridden libertine nobleman hero of most historical romances (actually the sequel to this book, "To Have and To Hold", features such a hero and is also an excellent, but much darker, book)!
Bravo to Patricia Gaffney! This book is a real treasure and the memorable characters will stay with you long after those from other books have faded into oblivion.

5 out of 5 stars Sweet Love Story.......2004-05-26

This book is delightful, beguiling and well written.
The romance is between a vicar and his childhood friend's wife (not as sordid as it sounds)! It is a gentle, sweet story that stays with you long after you read it. The author draws you into the story with believable and well written main and secondary characters centered on the little village. It is a refreshing story, no game playing between hero and heroine, and no torrid characters that hate each other at first. Just a mesmerizing story and wonderful read. This book is one in a trilogy of the village of Wyckerly. The next book To Have and Hold is much darker and different than this one but also worth the read.

5 out of 5 stars One of her best.......2003-04-04

This is the first book I read authored by Patricia Gaffney. A few years back, a sales woman at a used book store recommended this and the other two books in the Wyckerley triology. She is now one of my favorite authors. Although I like her most recent contemporary books, her older books, including this which are set in the past are her best in my opinion. They are better because in spite of the historical setting, the characters in her older books have current sensibilities and face timeless problems. Also, because they are set in a previous era, her older books don't have the pop culture references that make any contempory romance not just her books seem dated as soon as they are published.

To Love and Cherish is about Christy and Anne. This book is a world apart from other books of this genre. Ms. Gaffney authors with such a light touch and uses a gentle sense of humour that time is suspended while you are reading her books. How Christy reconciles his vocation with his love for Anne, a childhood friend's wife makes for a great plot--hard to put down. The suspense of "will they or won't they" holds up until the last page. You don't want to leave Wyckerly when this book is over and surprise! you don't have to! She has two other books set in this English town. Some of the characters you've met and some are new. So you can enjoy your stay in Wyckerly for a good long time.
