Book Description

Amidst the myth and folklore of Tavistock, one tale above all others strikes fear into the hearts of the townspeople—that of the murders on the Abbot’s Way. One cold winter, many years ago, a young acolyte led a group of fellow novices in the theft of their abbot’s wine store. Later, consumed by guilt and fear of discovery, he was driven to commit still more crimes. As legend has it, the devil himself meted out his punishment, leading the acolyte and his cohorts to their deaths on the treacherous Devon moors. Now, in the autumn of 1322, it looks as if history is repeating itself. Abbot Robert has found his wine barrel empty, and a body has been discovered on the moors. Furnshill and Puttock are called upon to investigate, but the case seems only to become increasingly complicated. It soon becomes apparent that it’s not just wine that’s missing from the abbey—and that the body on the moors isn’t the last.

4 out of 5 stars The Case of the Missing Wine.......2006-08-22

Michael Jecks gave up a career in the computer industry when he began writing the internationally successful Templar series. Well all I can say is the Computer Industries loss is the reader's gain. He has now written about a score of the Knights Templar mystery books featuring Sir Baldwin de Furnshill and Bailiff Simon Puttock and there are more to follow. Michael's books are full of intrigue and mystery and they are particularly well researched. Mr. Jecks lives in the area he writes about and I am sure this must assist him a great deal with his background research.

14th century England was riddled with myths and legends dating back to before the Romans came. The people of Devon were just as superstitious as all the rest. But one tale strikes terror into the hearts of the people of Tavistock, the tale of the murders that have taken place on the Abbot's Way. It is said that a young acolyte who stole the abbot's wine was led to his death on the treacherous moors by non other than the devil himself.

Now in late 1322, it looks as though history may be repeating itself. The present Abott, Robert, has found his wine barrel empty and a body has been found out on the moors.

Sir Baldwin and Simon are called to investigate, but it soon becomes apparent that there is more than wine missing from the Abbey, and the body out on the moors is not the last.

Product Description

In his quest for an indigenous "American Islam," Michael Muhammad Knight embarked on a series of interstate odysseys. Traveling 20,000 miles by Greyhound in sixty days, he squatted in run-down mosques, pursued Muslim romance, was detained at the U.S.-Canadian border with a trunkload of Shi'a literature, crashed Islamic Society of North America conventions, stink-palmed Cat Stevens, limped across Chicago to find the grave of Noble Drew Ali, and hunted down the truth of the Nation of Islam mystery-man, W.D. Fard - filling dozens of notebooks along the way. In the course of his adventures Knight sorted out his own relationship to Islam on his journey from punk provocateur to a recognized voice in the community, and watched first-hand the collapse of a liberal Islamic dream, the Progressive Muslim Union. Taking a unique perspective on Islam's intersection with race, gender, andAmericanization, Blue-Eyed Devil offers a brutally honest but ultimately compassionate look at the long, strange history of American Islam.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A unique journey.......2007-05-04

This road Odyssey through Islamic America is facinating, and will be enjoyed by those who are quite new to this matter as much as by those who are already familiar with the deep facts and legends regarding the presence of the Islamic faith in America. A talented author (sort of a story teller like Slick Rick or GhostFace), Knight is sharing his car and greyhound trips, his questioning and faith, his anger and love, his hopes and fears in full honesty... In all his trips and tribulations he ends up painting the face of nowadays muslim America... muslim punks, muslims for Bush, ego oriented progressives, five percenters, and simple sincere believers... Knight meets them all along his journey, in the streets, in masjids, in cemeteries.
He make readers laugh and shock some others, unaware of the often provocative content of Knights writings. He writes about who he is, straight from the guts, his honesty is what matter ultimately since he's not asking anyone to think like and what he thinks. He met, in his very unique way, face to face with Islam in America, its present diversity and ancient history. His quest to uncover the mystery surrounding Master Fard's life(s) is one of the key component of the book and one of the key to understand the different faces of Islam in America today.

5 out of 5 stars great book!.......2004-12-29

Im a person who reads many books but doesnt write many reviews.Im writting this one in gratitude to the writer.Orinally I had trouble in choosing a book to read on Goring.A subject I found interesting and wanted to learn more about.Im pleased that this was the book I choose.Im pleased in the style and how well Leffland tells it.This is historical novel with great deal of facts but is told in a fictional way that I found more entertaining then alot of biographies. She did give me quite a feeling of what it was like in the Riech and in Germany at that time. She did such a good job of this I thought It would be only fair of me to take a minute of my time to write this.I have read a great amount of books on world war II and this is one of the best.

5 out of 5 stars A justified historical novel.......2002-06-11

If you are interested in German/European history, then get yourself a copy of this book. It seems to be out of print, and no I won't sell mine, but its still worth finding. Leffland took the approach of a historical novel because she felt that this was the best way of making you understand the times and how heroic Germans could be seduced by Nazism and Hitler. Leffland certainly researched her subject well enough to have written a biography of Georing, but this approach had to be more fun for her and her readers. Sure, its kind of a cop out approach when comparing this to Kershaw's biography of Hitler, but then Kershaw does not make me feel like a German caught up in the rush of the early 20's in Germany either.

5 out of 5 stars Meet Hermann Goering.......2001-05-09

Leffland brings the complexities of Hermann Goering to life with clarity and vivid detail. Her descriptions of Castle Veldenstein and Carinhall (Goering's estate named after his first wife) are fascinating, and are quite accurate, probably the best ever written. Although this novel is fiction, the bulk of the material is taken from exhaustively researched facts. (Leffland actually went to Germany to visit places in the book firsthand and met with Goering's relatives.) The Knight, Death and the Devil is a wonderfully tragic tale that can be savored like a fine wine.

5 out of 5 stars A Fine Novel.......1999-05-02

Leffland is an exquisite writer. This novel explores the humanity of a monster, the banality of evil personified. It is a very rich and enlightening journey that illuminates a life yet can not answer the mystery behind its horrifying outcome. The writing is superb, the character of H.G. richly ambiguous. As with any villain, there are more questions than answers, and Leffland beautifully dramatizes the puzzle of the nature of evil and how it can take root in the human soul.

But this was far from the truth. Bertrild attacks Sabina and demands that Mainard send her back to the whorehouse. Before Mainard and Sabina can decide what to do, Bertrild is murdered, and Mainard is the chief suspect. Fearful that her love will be hanged for murder, Sabina flees to her old whoremistress Magdalene la Batarde for help. 4 out of 5 stars An excellent read, but a disappointing printing error.......2007-08-22

Roberta Gellis is a shining example of my favorite kind of female author - those who don't need to resort to romance to sell a story. Granted, there is a bit of romance in the book, but it's not the main focus of the book, and barely even a secondary story line (yes, it's integral to the plot, but not as a romantic tale in and of itself, more as an incidental occurrence).

I had never before read mystery novels set in medieval times. Quite a fascinating prospect. I've read medieval romances before, but the depth and detail revealed by Gellis's mounds of research were quite impressive.

The characters were genuine and sympathetic, the descriptions vivid and informative, and the mystery was more than adequately chilling and suspenseful. I would recommend this to anyone who loves a good cozy -- not quite the same, but a fine read nonetheless. A solid 8/10.

Note: The original hardcover edition (Tor, under the Forge imprint) repeats pages 97 to 128, and pages 129 to 162 are missing.

5 out of 5 stars Superlative historical fiction.......2007-06-12

Roberta Gellis is one of the best historical fiction writers I've had the pleasure of following for 30 years or more. This current series, whose protagonist, Magdalene la Batarde, is a female bordello keeper in Middle Aged England, is fully realized, feisty and unless you're thoroughly seeped in the history of the period, might seem too 'modern' to be true (however, go back to Nicolette de la Hay or the 4 Provencal Queens and you know she's prefectly possible in her time & place). I enjoy mysteries in general when they're well written and informative as well as entertaining (Thank you Dick Francis, PD James, Elizabeth Peters, Charles Knief, et.al.) and realism in the details piques your fancy, read any of Gellis' historical fiction works and then, probably, reread to visit the characters and the time period again.

4 out of 5 stars Passing strange, indeed.......2006-01-13

What a strange book. The mystery itself, who killed Bertrilde the shrew, is straightforward enough, but much ink is devoted in this story to assuring the reader the Mistress Magdalen's whores actually enjoy their work and are grateful for their jobs in this nice clean whorehouse! Magdalen herself is presented as some sort of whore's angel who makes certain of her "ladies" safety, happiness, and well-being. Not to be critical - this is just an entirely new take on the world's oldest profession.
That said, A Personal Devil is a twist on the generic medieval mystery story and is entertaining and difficult to figure. Give it a try!

5 out of 5 stars Very good reading!.......2003-09-03

Set in the year of 1139. Sabina, a gentle blind woman employed at the Old Priory Guesthouse, accepted the offer of Master Mainard to live exclusively with him. Since Mainard's face was horribly birth marked, everyone believed that his wife, Bertrild, would be glad she was rid of him. Instead, Bertrild was furious! She attacked Sabina and demanded Mainard return the doxy to the bordello. As Sabina and Mainard thought about what to do, Bertrild was murdered. Of course, her husband was the prime suspect. Sabina feared Mainard would hang. She went to her old mistress, Magdalene la Bâtarde, for help.

Magdalene cared about the women who worked for her. She would use her powerful friends in high places to seek out the real murderer.

***** Sir Bellamy of Itchen returns to help Magdalene unravel this mystery. Author Roberta Gellis did an outstanding job in creating a realistic murder mystery plot set in a fascinating time of history. The action began on the very first page and was able to hold my interest until the end. Fan of Sherlock Holmes, in my opinion, will especially enjoy this novel. Recommended!

4 out of 5 stars Brings medieval England to life in a most entertaining way........2002-10-20

At first I was put off by the author setting these tales in the the whorehouse know as "the Old Priory Guesthouse" but I was eventually won over by the well drawn characters and high level of historical detail. The plot moves along nicely and has enough twists and turns to keep you guessing, and the dramatic conclusion is a logical consequence of the suspenseful storyline. Twelfth-century England has not been so well portrayed since Ellis' Brother Cadfael series... and it seems not so far away in the humanity described between these pages. Highly Recommended for readers of historical mystery and fiction.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars bummer.......2005-03-19

I found many discrepencies in Mr. Sanello's book, compared to other books I've read on the subject. Due to the absence of footnotes, it is impossible to trace Mr. Sanello's sources. While the bibliography does list good sources, I doubt that Mr. Sanello has read them, because most of the listings contain the phrase, "Quoted in...." It makes for an impressive looking bibliography but one without authority.

The section on "Europe" is merely a rehash of the dramatic events surrounding the Templar Trial.

There are a few contemporary good puns like "bull" and "bullishness" referring to Pope Alexander. Otherwise, spend your time on this subject with more reliable sources.

4 out of 5 stars Good History-Ostentacious title.......2004-05-04

The history presented by this book is well documented. The author is careful to stay away from conspiracy theories, a pitfall of many authors who write about the Templars.

The book is divided into two sections: The Holy Land and Europe, the two main areas of Templar influence. The author does well to describe the Templars' activities in these arenas.

The author criticizes Charles Addison's History of the Knights Templar on many occaisions. He does so to point out that Addison's history is, at times, outdated. For example, Addison doesn't translate out of Latin, many of the more illicit crimes ascribed to the Knights Templar. Apparently such crimes as sodomy were too taboo to discuss in the 1800's when his work was published. This means that much of Addison's book is in Latin.

The biggest problem with the book is the title. The author does not make the case for the Templars being "the Devil's bankers" anywhere in his work. He describes their banking and real estate enterprises but this doesn't justify such an ostentacious title. The title would appeal to conspiracy buffs, who would then read the book but be disappointed by the author's focus.

4 out of 5 stars A Good Initiation Into the History of the Knights.......2004-04-19

If you've wondered about the Knights Templars, who they were, what they did, and why they were important, this book will introduce you to them in a way that is fairly easy to understand without a bunch of confusing lineage tracing. From the Knights' endeavors to protect pilgrims in Palestine, to their more lucrative business endeavors in Europe, to their final hurrah tied to a burning stake, Frank Sanello takes you there. He shows how the Knights played a pivotal role in the Crusades, how they invented banking, and how royal greed can overcome most any obstacle. He also covers many of the myths surrounding not only their intiation rites and their beliefs, but also the myths surrounding their legendary wealth. Did they ever really have that much wealth? Where is it now? What about the Holy Grail and the Ark of the Covenant? While obviously nobody actually knows for sure about these things, Sanello does cover many of the theories regarding them.

5 out of 5 stars A very thought-provoking book........2007-03-24

I first read this book 12 years ago and I must say - its not an ordinary book. While I don't agree with her views on the "good-nature" of the devil and the possibility of his redemption, her views that man's quest for so called reality are most times vain, can't be faulted. Every human being should read this book. However, I'd recommend reading the truth from the bible before commencing this journey. The book changed my thinking - made me realise that the things that men mostly seek and die for, are really vain.

A great book. Will always have it in my collection.

5 out of 5 stars Fast and relaible.......2006-11-05

I bought the book for my dad and he sure did like it...i did not read it so cant really say much about it....

5 out of 5 stars A Psycho-anlysis of man........2005-12-09

In my first read of this great book at the age of 13, i came out with a great impression but little understanding.
However, 20 years after and after reading it three more times i can say it is an indepth examination of the human mind and the genesis of evil and corruption in our society. Modern man will do well to read and learn that the pains and failures of our today world has its roots in our selfishness, greed and vanity. In addition our inability to decipher it to be mere vanity makes it more complicated.
Every man should own one!.

5 out of 5 stars Second in her Trilogy on Christianity and the Devil.......2005-10-04

Following her commercial success of "Barabbas," a revision fantasy on the crucifixion, Corelli wrote "The Sorrows of Satan," a sequel to "Barabbas" and thoroughly horrified the Christian world. There is an underlying mystical strength to her glorification of Satan as a misunderstood adventurer in the modern world. This book broke all previous records in Britain's publishing history and hence made Corelli England's best selling author up to that time. "The Master-Christian" is the capper in the trilogy.

5 out of 5 stars A Consumate Work of Art.......2004-05-14

Marie Corelli's imaginative conception of the relationship between God, man and the devil is awe-inspiring. Probably, a novel equivalent of John Milton's legendary poem "Paradise Lost", the Sorrows of Satan forces the mind to wander into the world of the supernatural and to reappraise how powerful human choices are and how much they could be affected by our immediate circumstances. I read this book for the first time 10 years ago and here am I reading it again for the 5th time. It always leaves me inspired and infused with a great sense of creativity. I know that I will always come back to this book and so this will definitely not be the last time for me. Highly recommended to any lover of art.

Impulse buy, couldn't stop reading. You will not go wrong getting any of these books in this series. Keep it up I am addicted I honestly can not buy a copy fast enough!!!!!!!!!

4 out of 5 stars Not a bad sequel to "My Demon's Kiss".......2007-01-02

I just wanted to go on record saying that even though most did not like the heroine, Siobhan, I did. She wasn't the MOST likeable character in the book but she was more real than some other heroines. I like the fact that she was torn between her love for her brother and her love for Tristan. If a person has been taught all their lives to hate a particular group of people and to kill them given the chance, not to mention that said group of people had killed that person's parents, odds are that person will find it very hard to stop thinking of the enemy as "the enemy", only good dead. And if I were faced with having an enemy who then became my husband and then a vampire, there's no telling what I would do. Even though he might awaken a physical yearning in me, he's still the enemy ,real or imagined, AND a vampire. I dont' know, folks. It's easy to judge the heroine from the outside looking in. I don't know about you all, but I like a heroine who isn't all peaches and cream. It's makes her more real than fantasy.

    1 out of 5 stars Dissapointing Sequel!!!.......2006-10-03

All I am going to say is that the heroine trys to kill our wonderful Tristan REPEATEDLY!!!!!! Oh of course she crys and tells him she loves him while she is doing it so that makes it all right, God. I did not see this coming let me tell you the first book My Demon's Kiss rocked that was the best vampire romance. Sadly that cannot be said for this one. Sex scenes were not as hot as in the first one and Lucy Blue even told me that she thought they WERE hotter that the first one. Well we definitley have diffrent opinions on what is hot. Like have a guy tie you to the bed which is yes hot but that was like the only sex scene in the entire book which after she tried to stab him I just gave up and looked for any hot scenes which sadly there was none so don't bother. Distubing vampire romance that has the heroine as some tough bitch who can take care of herself but just came off as a little oh hell alot too what is the word bitchy, independent wait I am all for the independent female and all but when you come off as cruel, mean, and with the intent to murder that is where I draw the line. Best advice read My Demon's Kiss and just that, you will not be dissapointed but just read that one if you read this one you will question if this is the same author like I did. Oh yeah it got one star because come one that guy on the cover is totally hot how could you want to kill him?

1 out of 5 stars star is for Tristan.......2006-07-24

Another yummy hero saddled with a totally unlikable heroine. This book has a fantastic cover (NK, my fav!!!) and a story that I thought really had promise, but unfortunately, it has one of the most unlikable heroines ever to grace a romance novel. Siobhan had a terrible childhood, I will grant you, but she was a witch. She wanted to kill Tristan right up till the end. What he ever wanted with her, I will never understand. I failed to see that she had any redeeming qualities.
The romance, and I use the term loosely, between the two never took off. I failed to see why he would not just kill her and be done with it, especially after she threatened his little daughter.
I like the vampire angle and Simon and Orlando had promise, but Siobhan killed this book for me. What a witch!!

4 out of 5 stars Very good sequel to "My Demon's Kiss". Heroine was a bit annoying, but the hero was good enough to make up for it........2006-07-07

A hero to die for: Tristan DuMaine is a man who loves his little girl above all things. So much so, that he gives up his army, his castle, and his life to save her. Now that he is prisoner to his rebel enemies, Tristan will be forced to wed one of them, putting everything he owns in her hands. After the wedding, he will be slaughtered. His last living words are a plea to his reluctant wife, Siobhan, "My child...my Claire. Promise me. Swear she will be safe." Siobhan swears to protect the child with her own life.

Beaten to near death, Tristan is dumped on the side of a trail. Just as his captors are about to leave him, a wolf attacks them from the forest. While slaughtering both villains, the wolf transforms into a man... a vampire named Simon. (Hero of the prequel to this book, "My Demon's Kiss.") Seeing that Tristan is suffering, Simon decides to take his blood in a mercy kill. While Simon is draining the last of his blood, Tristan vows to go down fighting. He bites Simon back. Taking Simon's blood, Tristan has unknowingly made himself a vampire.

Now that he knows he can't be killed, Tristan is bent upon revenge. He will return to take back his castle and his daughter. He will happily kill both Siobhan and her brother in retaliation for their brutal murdering of his knights and himself. Simon tries to stop him, realizing that Tristan has no idea what kind of creature he has become. But Tristan will not wait. Over the next several days, he will learn what his limitations are the hard way... he must avoid sunlight, and cannot eat food, worst of all he must feed on blood for survival. To Tristan, it is all worthwhile if he can claim his revenge.

When he returns to the castle, Tristan is eager to attack Siobhan. However, when he drinks her blood, he can feel her thoughts and emotions. He realizes that she has been mourning him. He can't kill her. He is enraptured by her.

Siobhan is torn. She must protect her brother from Tristan, but she can't bring herself to kill him. After learning what he is, Siobhan understands what she she must do to destroy him... a wooden stake through his hear and removal of his head. However it is well known that Tristan is a cousin to the king. When Tristan returns to the castle with his royal army, Siobhan must pose as his lady to keep her people safe.

The evil father of all vampires, Lucien Kivar, is eager to use the power in Tristan's land to prolong his own damned existence. The castle is built upon ancient Druid ruins. The skeletons of the the dead buried in the catacombs below. Setting a trap to capture the one person who can bring him power over the world, Kivar will use Siobhan to lure his prize. Tristan and Simon must work together to stop him. When Kivar stabs Siobhan through the stomach, Tristan knows there is only one way to keep her from dying.

An overall terrific and exciting story. My one gripe is with Siobhan's character. It got old watching her betray Tristan again and again. Even trying to kill him several times! I get that she wanted to protect her brother, but seeing how short her brother's loyalty was towards her made it hard to continue to justify that. Despite her continued treachery, Tristan forgives her every time. He evens offers her comfort because she is crying as she is trying to cut off his head! There is such a thing as too much forgiveness.
