The book arrived in a timely manner & no shipping damage. Item was just as described. Thank you.

5 out of 5 stars grab this and Judy Hall's "Crystal Bible" and nothing else..........2007-08-04

excellent, excellent book with vivid pics and of course all the wonderful sections and advantages already mentioned, but consider this...I have used the chapter "The Magical Connection between Stone and Star" to create healing bracelets/anklets for others and for myself made from the stones listed for our particular birth signs-very cool! The wealth of information at the tips of your fingers is just astounding...I refer to this and Judy Hall's "The Crystal Bible" and "Crystals and Healing Stones" for more obscure stones daily. I found it on a clearance rack and bought 3 copies-two sisters love crystals and two friends, so I was one short since I had my copy already...I am in the dog house because I mention it alot! IF YOU SEE IT GET IT, you won't regret it!

4 out of 5 stars Beautiful Reference.......2007-07-12

If you're looking for an in-depth reference book on crystal therapy, this is NOT the right tome for you. If you're looking for a book that handily serves as lightweight resource, historical reference and coffee table volume, this is perfect.

Author Flora Peschek-Bohmer incorporates stunning photography in this beautiful epistle, laying her narratives over glossy pages and lush images. The hardback version, at approximately 7 x 9.5 inches, is a generous size without being too large to tuck into a suitcase. The text contains a blend of history and crystal lore, presented in simple-to-follow terms. Stated metaphysical attributes frequently takes a back seat to historical references, where Peschek-Bohmer provides an intriguing look at how mankind has employed stones for various uses.

While the primary thrust is the metaphysical properties of crystals, this book also includes a good rundown of care, cleansing and other tools for anyone who wants to carry or use or just collect examples of the featured stones.

4 out of 5 stars Good Crystal reference.......2007-05-20

This is a great little book - has all the main details on most crystals, including a lot of the more recently discovered ones. However, does not for example include a fairly common crystal such as howlite. The pictures are very good though and there is enough basic information to satisfy most.

5 out of 5 stars Healing Crystals and Gemstones.......2007-05-07

Great pictures and illustrations! The book really helps me to feel like I know how to use crystals and gemstones like a pro! I think that it is very good for a beginner.

5 out of 5 stars enjoyable.......2007-09-16

I really enjoyed this book. I stayed interested until the very end. I wish there were more books in this line.

3 out of 5 stars Not her best work.......2006-10-01

I listened to the unabridged audio edition of Amethyst, and while I found this story started off very well (albeit a bit predictably), I was disappointed to find this novel lost steam about halfway through. Mostly because the author insists on multiple POV switches within the tale which was disconcerting... And secondly because I did not care for either of the romances. Amethyst's relationship with captain McHenry was not very fleshed out. Even though she is a title character, the novel is quickly subsumed by the regular cast leaving her albeit weak story by the wayside. Opal's relationship with the preacher was likewise unsatisfying (to me), because of the age difference between these two characters. I just did not like Jacob because he found a girl so young attractive. I know its historically accurate, but to be frank it skeeved me out. I would prefer if he found a woman his own age. That this character was the town preacher made it worse.

Overall, while this novel was enjoyable, it just lacked oomph to keep me interested. Also, the author usually does a better job of romances than this. 3 stars. Only average.

4 out of 5 stars Treasure.......2006-07-25

Amethyst by Lauraine Snelling will most definately take a place on my shelf, displayed along with the best. I don't think it was the best in the series, but it was certainly entertaining and a great read.
I liked how Amethyst's story was a little different than the others. For one, she didn't come from a good background at all. Ruby and Opal grew up in a well-to-do house, even though techinically they were not family. Pearl grew up in a wealthy family. Amethyst didn't have either. She was neither wealthy nor loved. And i found that a refreshing change.
There were other aspects of the book, however, that i found rushed. Little Squirrel's death was over in about five lines. No struggle, no nothing. Just dead. There were other things too, that ended too quickly.
I definately recommend that a reader begin with the first book in the series. All four book rely heavily on each other and it won't make sense if you start on book three.
I love romance and i found Amethyst and Jeremiah's relationship, along with that of Opal and Jacob's relationship beautiful. Opal's struggle with her faith, too, was written beautifully. Also, Snelling's description of scenery and the daily comings and goings were on target and at times i felt as though i were sitting in the room or on the range with the characters.
All in all this was a wonderful book and is highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2006-03-16

Enjoyed the sequil for this series. I have reread all four of her books in the series "Dakotah Treasures" and have enjoyed them each time.

3 out of 5 stars Fourth in the series Dakota Treasures.......2006-01-08

I truly believe the first 3 books were much superior to this one, but there were some good things here, too. Amythyst leaves her less than honorable father to go searching for a lost nephew only to have a huge surprise. In the meantime, she decides to stay in the Dakota territory with folks she comes to love. She goes to work, rides out the horrible winter, makes friends and falls in love. However, is the love going to be returned? An unlikely meeting with rich Mrs. Grant had changed the course of her life. Eventually the two women start an enterprise and the book sort of ends with the final love stories' climax.

5 out of 5 stars Glimer in the sky.......2001-11-03

I found this book to be very real. You can picture what is going on in the book, in your head, while you are reading it. It is very capturing. I love the character Amythyst. I also like the way how, the auhor used a name appropriate to the heroine's background. It is very enjoyable. One of the best books I have read!!!

5 out of 5 stars Top notch debut, GEM of a book!.......2001-03-21

Amethyst is one definite keeper. I should have taken the reviews to heart and read only when I had time to finish, but I couldn't wait. I stayed up till 3 in the morning (and still some way to go) but had to go to work the next day. Still, it was very much worth it.

Amethyst (Amy) Goldsmith is a jewelry maker who survived The Fire, aided by the hero, Colin Chase, Earl of Greystone. They had met briefly five years ago in the King's coronation parade. Although there is an instant attraction between them, Colin can't pursue it, as he's already betrothed to a highborn (albeit generously endowed) cold fish, Lady Priscilla Hobbs. He then tries all ways to get Amy off his hands as she's too distracting for his resolve to leave her alone. She, on the other hand, has other ideas and thinks of one excuse after another to put off her departure. Thus started the Earl's downfall (though he thoroughly enjoys it) as he finds himself irrevocably drawn to Amy's charms, warmth and beauty.

The story is interspersed with fascinating historical snippets by a deft hand that interest buffs like me. Lauren Royal really knows her craft. Her research was thorough and I was totally immersed in the Restoration period; transported back in time to the tragedy of the great fire, the cultures and elaborate dress of its people. Of course, what made the book so memorable were all the main and equally enthralling supporting cast. Little Mary was a particular favorite.

The characters were all well defined. I couldn't agree more that the amazing chemistry between Amy and Colin was a joy to watch - they were practically soul mates (except towards the end, when they were not forthcoming with each other). There were also generous doses of sparkling wit, humor and sensual scenes throughout the book, not forgetting the oneness you feel with the cast. Royal doesn't read like a debut writer at all. If this work is anything to go by, I predict bigger and better things for this bright new star. I'm off to look for the sequel starring Jason, Colin's elder brother. Thank you so much, Lauren.

5 out of 5 stars A jewel!.......2000-12-13

I don't normally read romance, but this book kept me interested by the great character development as well as the believeable historical parts. Well done!

5 out of 5 stars What a wonderful debut!.......2000-11-16

Almost from the instant I started reading AMETHYST, I felt transported back in time. Lauren Royal lists FOREVER AMBER as one of her inspirations, and it shows. The pageantry and superficiality of Charles II's court, as well as the individual tragedies of the Great Fire of London come alive in this novel.

Not only is the historical basis of AMETHYST extremely accurate, but the character development and interaction is superb. Many romance novelists tend to focus solely on the main couple, leaving me to wonder how happy-ever-after they would truly be when the villian is vanquished and the real world intrudes. Not so for Amy and Colin. They interact with the extraordinary and the everyday -- family, fellow disaster victims, and the king. There is a real sense that their story takes place in the world, not separate from it on some utopia-like plane. There is true chemistry and emotion between them, but you see their true character as well -- their unswerving loyalty, Amy's insecurities, Colin's sense of humor...it all has a very 'real' feel to it.

Based on this book alone, I would pick up any Lauren Royal novel, sight unseen. I just know I would not be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars This book is PRECIOUS.......2000-08-23

Forget any of the other good books you have read. This is sure to knock out any competition on your list! The FIRST time I read I simply could not put it down. It has everything a perfect book needs. History, romance, humor, and tradgedy. I loved this book soo much that I currently have reread it 5 times over! You'll feel like you know Colin and Amy personally and it's impressive twist and turns will keep suprising you over and over again. But be warned reading it once is never enough - no one can resist it's dazzling charm!

5 out of 5 stars More great information.......2007-04-10

The Amethyst Light is the second book of the series, and again it gives you "the meaning of life" in a warm, matter-of-fact way.

I highly recommend both books- they are filled with simple everyday explainations of why we choose to visit the "school" we call Earth, and how to raise your levels of joy and understanding by simply getting along with everyone you come in contact with. There is other fascinating info that gives you much to consider and inspires you to seek your path and follow it.

(A side note about one review of this book: the reviewer claims this book is not channeled information by the real and only Djwhal Khul. So what!!!?
It doesn't matter -it's all impossible to prove. It's like claiming your religion is the only true religion- it only causes conflict between humans- and goes against the very teachings we are all reading!

This book is wonderful and filled with great information! If you are a seeker of the meaning of life- you'll love both books by Violet Starre.
Get them today and enjoy!

Peace :-)

1 out of 5 stars Read the Real Books, Not this!.......2006-02-23

If you are interested in material by Djwhal Khul then search Amazon for that name and buy books published by the Lucis Trust. There are NO authentic writings of DK outside of the Lucis Trust, but there are many who pretend to be his "voice." This only happened once, via the pen of Alice A. Bailey. Do your homework and get real material.

4 out of 5 stars Update for Bailey books.......2005-08-15

If you are familiar with Bailey texts or other theosophical writings, this is a must. The Amethyst Light is the second volume and hence the Diamond Light should be read first. If you liked the Diamond Light then you are not disappointed with this one either.

The book is easy to read and to the point. Master DK provides updates and insights for the new millenium and the forthcoming Aquarian Age.

I am a stokes fan, I own every novel she has written and with this one she has done it again, you will not regret reading this one! I loved it.

5 out of 5 stars Penelope Stokes at her best!.......2005-11-12

I have recently discovered Ms. Stokes books and "The Amethyst Heart" is my favorite. After purchasing a few of her books, I decided to use my local library to continue with her collection. Now I need to purchase "The Amethyst Heart" so I can highlight various sentences and thoughts for future reference. This book was a very enjoyable, inspirational novel that I look forward to owning and reading again.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best.......2005-03-17

I have read Penelope Stokes' Circle of Grace book from the library. I checked the author on her official website and I was impressed by her education and writing skills and style. After that, I start to buy books which she has authored. I have purchased The Amethyst Heart and The Amber Photograph and will intend to buy the rest of her books.
First, the title of this book is touchy...amethyst which is a spiritual stone. Secondly, she puts bible verses and passages that are applicable to the lines in her story which makes it a more enjoyable read. Then in this book, there are touches of civil war issues and racism which are intriguing subjects and as her words flow, the reader will feel that he or she is being mentally taken to this imaginative world and being a witness to this story. I think this is one of her best, if not her best written story judging from the 3 books that Ms. Stokes authored that I have read.
Would I recommend it to every reader? Absolutely, because I believe in her style and her prose is written very adequately and consistent to her very excellent writing gift and talent.

5 out of 5 stars A Story Not To Forget.......2004-09-04

I ordered this book when I was in high school. It had been sitting on my book shelf for a few years, then I finally decided to actually read it. I finished the book in three days and was sorry that it took me so long to pick it up. From the first page the book takes you in as if you were Ms.Noble's great granddaughter. Throughout the story I laughed and cried till the very end. I loved it so much that I bought an additional two copies as Christmas gifts to my co-workers. Its a book worthy of sharing.

5 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC !!.......2003-10-25

I have to agree with everyone else here who said it was a "can't put down" marvelous read! Christian fiction has come a long way since the olden days when it was a bit "hooky" and not believable -- not to mention not interesting. Ms. Stokes knows how to grab you and keep you reading!! Thank the LORD for good Christian writers!!

I MUST ADMIT A DISAPPOINTMENT IN THIS BOOK--THE STORY LINE WAS FAIR, BUT I FEEL AS IF WHITNEY WAS GRASPING, SO TO M SPEAK, AND THE WRITING STYLE LEFT ME COLD. AFTER HAVING READ SEVERAL OTHER WHITNEY WORKS, IT SEEMED TO ME THAT SHE WAS HAVING AN "OFF TIME" DURING THE WRITING OF THIS BOOK.

4 out of 5 stars I really liked it.......2001-06-28

I'm surprised that anyone was disappointed in it (other reviewers) because I enjoyed it. I will say it was not a typical Phyllis A. but a great read all the same.

4 out of 5 stars Not one of Phyllis whitney's better novels...........2001-05-12

But I enjoyed it just the same. As someone else mentioned, i too had problems with some of the dialogue that ran throughout the novel. It read like the characters were reciting from a travel brochure. However, the story itself was interesting to me and read like a typical Phyllis A Whitney novel.

AMETHYST DREAMS is about the mystery behind a missing person, Susan Trench. An old college friend of hers, Hallie Knight, is summoned by Susan's grandfather Nicholas Trench, to help figure out who killed Susan, and from there the novel begins. We learn about the people that meant most to Susan, and what Susan was all about. Who wanted her dead? And why?

Among the sub plots are Hallie's troubled marraige, Nicholas's relationships with his wife Anne, who was a famous artist now living on her own, and other various persons that lived on Top Sail Island and were somehow connected to Susan.

I wouldnt' recommend this as a first novel for those who haven't read other books by Phyllis A Whitney. but as a fan, I would definitely recommend it. Ms Whitney has always been able to create characters that I like, and I find myself wanting to read more simply because she knows how to tell a good story.

Book Description

In a society similar to ours in some ways and very different in others, 16-year-old Serena and her older sister, Willow, struggle to get by in a tough, crime-infested urban neighborhood. By birth they are half Yulang, half Gorgio, but are accepted by neither race. The sisters get no help from the Yulang, because Willow's child was born out of wedlock and the family has been declared outcast. The Gorgios are even worse, trying to take the child away. A run-in with social services, aptly nicknamed the Cruelty, launches Serena on a journey that is at once an escape and a quest to reunite her family. With the help of a boy named Shem, who is on a quest of his own, Serena travels deep into the mountains, where precious gems are mined, and across barren plains, where white-clad Trident Riders are terrorizing anyone who is not Gorgio. Along the way, Serena finds the answers she seeksand some she didn't even know she was looking for. The dynamics of racism and resistance are central themes of this modern adventure. Employing a mixture of gritty reality and richly drawn magical elements, this unique tale of selfdiscovery will captivate readers of contemporary fiction as well as fantasy fans.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Let me think how many copies I'll need..........2006-08-06

This book feels like fantasy, but there are no tired fairy-, elf-, goblin-type characters. Just regular humans. Thank God and Loiuse Spiegler for a young adult book that finally has high moral standards, great lessons about friendship, and it's a real page-turner! All my nieces will be getting this book for Christmas or birthdays or whatever.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent FICTION!!.......2006-03-29

It's too bad that some reviewers don't seem to understand that this YA
fantasy is a work of fiction, and that the Yulang people in it are NOT
Rom.
The author gives a more detailed explanation of this on her website,
www.amethystroad.net. After reading more about her background and her
inspiration for this story there, it's even more clear to me that she
never
intended for the novel to be a portrayal of Rom culture, nor to
perpetuate
an inaccurate, other-wordly image of the Romany people. On the
contrary,
Louise Spiegler has created a richly-layered fictional world that
parallels
our own in thought-provoking ways, inhabited by strong characters that
are
fully-realized and psychologically believable. The Amethyst Road is
driven
by a strong sense of social justice, and is not high fantasy, a la
Tolkein,
but rather an alternate reality fantasy, set in a gritty modern world
with
magical elements. It would be a terrific read for teens interested in
the
dynamics of racism, as well as those who are just looking for a
fast-paced
and compelling coming-of-age adventure.

5 out of 5 stars Want to read a good book?.......2006-03-24

Want to read a good book? One that makes you ponder? A book that will whisper to you at night about how you are connected to the world? Are you tangled in a web of love and hate, too? Have you learned you must always give? After reading this book I really wanted a necklace with charms so I'd be able to give them away one by one -- a lasting symbol of how I'm connected to my friends. Are you someone who has a bit of gypsy in your heart? Read this thought-provoking book.

The Amethyst Road has been nominated for the newly minted Andre Norton Award (YA category of the Nebulas) by the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America. Kudos to the SFWA folk for recognizing this worthy book. I'm rooting for Louise. Her book is brilliant!

1 out of 5 stars Fantasy Gypsies once again.......2006-03-20

Despite her having been "inspired by Rom Gypsy culture and her experiences as a human rights activist" Ms. Spiegler has added yet another title to the long list of Tolkienesque "Gypsy" novels which serve only to perpetuate an other-worldly image that detracts from Roma as a real people facing real problems.

5 out of 5 stars A compelling journey.......2005-12-21

This coming-of-age story explores complex relationships in an accessible way. Serena and Shem portray two strong characters. Young readers will identify with their feelings of being outsiders, their commitment to those they love, and their weaknesses made strong through adversity. Serena's only possession provides a necessary and symbolic layer to the storyline without becoming sentimental. The Amethyst Road would work well in literature circle or classroom use to prompt discussion of cross-cultural identity issues, interpersonal struggles, and integrity.
