5 out of 5 stars Love Comes Softly review.......2007-09-30

This series is awesome. They are so easy to read that you just flow. The only complaint is skipping in the years but you could not begin to read all of the years i guess. Very hard to put down once you start reading.

5 out of 5 stars Love Comes Softly Pack.......2007-07-25

I enjoyed reading these books for content and because they were very easy to read. They were written in a comprehensive language that allowed the reader to flow quickly through its content.

5 out of 5 stars Love Comes Softly Books 1-4.......2007-05-07

Good strong moral values are taught in this series. Easy reading gives you an idea of what it was like to live in the 1800's including travel, homelife, and strong work ethics. It takes you back to a slower pace of life. These books are worth reading.

5 out of 5 stars Refreshing!!!.......2007-05-07

I bought all the movies and all the books for my Mom (83) and she absolutly loves them, she read all 8 books in about a week, said she "just couldnt put them down"!! Highly reccomended!!

5 out of 5 stars Heartwarming and soulful!.......2007-05-06

The Love Comes Sotfly books are wonderful! The characters jump out at you and come alive. They are much better than the Hallmark movies, and it was fun to read the differences and follow the lives of Clark, Marty and their children through the pages. Read the Prairie Legacy also by Janette Oak, they continue the story of Clark and Marty. What a wonderful set of books, I really reccommend them, especially if you like sequels and want to know the rest of the story.

5 out of 5 stars Love's Unending Legacy.......2007-04-11

In this 5th istalment of the "Love Comes Softly" series Janette Oke continues to take her characters to new levels. Each having their own strengths, weeknesses, and trials. As always a great read and hard to put down. I just want to read from start to finish and start the next book.

5 out of 5 stars ANOTHER GREAT BOOK IN THE SERIES.......2005-12-16

This book was focused on the other children of Marty and Clark.
Very little was mentioned of Missie and Willie, and I didn't know if I would be interested in it. I was!!! I love Ellie and Lane. There were heartbreaking moments, also. Overall, must read again.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT READ.......2005-10-21

I love this series but this is one of my favorite books only because it is so full of fun and surprises. I think that love that Ellie finds is sweet and true. I also love the biggest suprise of all.

5 out of 5 stars Ellie, Clare and Arnie share the Davis Legacy........2003-08-01

Marty and Clark are home from Missy's, and the re-adjustment takes time. Luke has finally left home, studying to become a doctor. Arnie and Anne have married. Nandry is withdrawn and refuses to be a part of the family anymore and Marty is unable to find out why. Clare and Kate are super-anxiously awaiting the birth of their first baby. Are they prepared if things go wrong? Will their faith survive? The LaHayes have decided to visit Willie and Missy in the West, and much to everyone's surprise, they love it! In their absence, we again meet Lane, the humble, trustworthy, handsome young cowboy who works at the Hanging W. Missy and Willy now have three children and Clae and her preacher husband are in the east.

This particular book focuses on Ellie, her strong points and her dreams. She has adequately assumed the role of homemaker and caregiver in spite of the fact she is probably the prettiest, most eligible young woman in the area. Her heart is pure, her motives are right and she is a real blessing to her parents. Will this continue? Or change when she is faced with a life-altering decision? This book makes the reader hurt with Ellie, dream with her, and finally, well, you need to read the book.

There is one major bombshell in this book, but that would spoil it for future readers. Way to go Janette Oke, and keep the books coming in, they are a wonderful escape to a simpler, quieter time. This book ends with the Davis family in awe of passing on UNENDING LEGACIES....not just material, but spiritual as well.

5 out of 5 stars Well written, with a multitude of unexpected twists........1999-09-03

This fifth book of Janette Oke's "Love Comes Softly" series continues the story of main characters Clark and Marty Davis. In her dealings with the issues surrounding the family's acceptance of Clark's new handicap and the occurance of other difficult events, Janette Oke gently teaches lessons of faith readers can apply to their own life. Whether describing the emotions of a mother sending her grown children off to fulfill their dreams, or tackling the agonizing question of why God would permit tragedy in the lives of those who serve him, Janette Oke's writing draws the reader into the story and plays those emotions directly upon the strings of the reader's heart. Unlike many lukewarm prarie-era stories, this book does not shy away from unpleasant subjects. Instead it tackles them head on, forcing the reader to grow in his/her own assurance as s/he identifies with the characters in the book, and with their tragedies and triumphs. A must read for anyone who has ever asked the question, "Why, God?"

5 out of 5 stars Love's Long Journey.......2007-04-11

Another winner for Janette oke. This is the third instalment in the "Love Comes Softly" series. Once again you are drawn into the story and have a hard time putting it down. I plan on reading this series again and again.

4 out of 5 stars Love's Long Journey.......2006-09-09

I tried to read this book three times and gave up after a few chapters. Then I decided I was going to read it from cover to cover, and I was delighted to find that the book picks up momentum as it goes along. It's like the first few chapters your'e pushing uphill, and all of a sudden you arive at the top and . . . WHEEEEE!!!!!!! A wholesome, well written novel about a young couple starting a new life together in the West. Realistic - not a fairy tale - but a joy to read. If I had a complaint, it would be the polarization between the Christians and the non religious charactors. Missy is always feeling sorry for the lost people and thinking about how cold and hard their hearts are, and how they have problems. I am a Christian, and I feel it is important to share my faith with others, but it should be remembered that all people are created in a unique and special way - believers and unbelievers. There are very few people who are so sick they are just one lump of pain and problems. Also, I thought it was slightly annoying how Missy constantly sympathized with the trivial difficulties of her neighbors on the wagon train when she had just as bad or worse problems herself. Seems a bit like a saviour complex, to me. Having thus said, I enjoyed this book and would highly reccomend it to fans of Inspirational and historical fiction.

4 out of 5 stars Movie confused me..........still liked it .......2006-03-26

I started reading the books after i watched all 3 movies. The book was very different then the book. I cant say i was disappointed. I enjoyed reading this version. This book was about Missie's journey to the west, and what she went through to get there. How hard it must of been. I still recomend this book. Just dont go into it thinking it is like the movies.

3 out of 5 stars Doormat heroine... So so.......2005-12-30

Missie looooooooves Willie and will do anything for him including giving up her family, traveling in a covered wagon, and going west to live and work on a Ranch, something she has no interest in at all. Willie looooves Missie and subjects her to a harrowing dream west, the pitfalls of traveling in a covered wagon, isolation, and living in a sodhouse for two years while he selfishly pursues his dream of becoming a rancher.

Ech. I enjoyed the first two books in this series but the romance between Missie and Willie just did not enthrall me like Marty/Clark romance. Perhaps because I never liked Willie LeHaye in the first two books, and to suddenly find him the 'hero' in book three grated. Or perhaps, I hated how Missie (playing the true romance novel heroine), never seems to assert her needs and wants with her husband, constantly 'sacrificing' so Willie can pursue 'his dream.' I could've enjoyed this novel much more if Missie wanted to Ranch as much as Willie... But this was not the case. Missie hates the idea of moving west and ranching the first 3/4 of the book.

I guess I prefer my romance novels to focus more on the partnership between two people and less on the selfish desires of one person (Willie). I also felt the author went a bit overboard with repeating the Isaiah verse at every possible opportunity. Okay we get it already.

3 stars. Would be better if Missie asserted herself more, and Willie was more sensitive to her needs.

5 out of 5 stars Oke did it again........2005-10-24

This is one of my favorite books out of the series. I love the adventure and romance that this book brings with it. I laughed and I cried but mostly I cried. I love this story and think that everyone should read it.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A good series for young women.......2007-08-14

This is the fourth book in the Love Comes Softly series. I ordered the first three in the series on a hunch that they would be good since they have been made into movies. I ordered these for my 15 year old daughter to read through the summer. I also ordered the DVDs. My daughter is not an avid reader so I had to twist her arm a bit to read these. I am glad they were interesting to her and had good life lessons in them. I would have her read aloud to me and we would discuss what was happening in the story. This was also her first time to see that the book and the movie is often very different. We are still readig the series.

5 out of 5 stars First Rate Story Teller.......2007-07-05

I was first introduced to Jeanette Okes' stories on Moody Bibles 'Stories From the Bookshelf' series, a radio dramatization. Having listened to the episodes and gotten caught up in the stories, I was excited when I learned that they had made the movies. I felt both of the first two stayed fairly true to the stories, but for some reason its' hard to fathom, 'Loves' Abiding Joy' is a departure, an entertaining story, but not the one the book tells by that title. It leaves it open for them to still tell this story but..what would they call that movie?
"Marty and Clarke Go west?"
Neverthe less It is all well written and the movies are well done. The other stories on the Moody Radio series are great as well.

4 out of 5 stars love comes softly series.......2006-12-22

i really enjoy this series. i first started getting into this author when i started reading Beverly Lewis about 1 1/2-2 years ago. in my opinion the movies and books do not follow eachother very closely, but both are well done in their own right (like one of the other raters stated-very well, i might add). i have a few other books by Jeanette Oke, but i think that Love Comes Softly is by far the best series i have read by her so far. (i have yet to read all 8)

This is an excelent companion to "Love Comes Softly". It is the second in the series and an excellent read. I found it hard to put down. Janette Oke is a wonderful writer and can keep you so involved with the story that you hate for it to end.

4 out of 5 stars Janette Oke's books.......2007-01-11

Heartwarming stories about life among the plain people, full of good quality reading about family values.

5 out of 5 stars Love Comes Softly Series.......2006-11-03

The whole series is just a wonderful wholesome series, that any girl or woman would enjoy reading.

4 out of 5 stars Love's Enduring Promise.......2006-07-13

Love Comes Softly, the first book in the series, left us with Marty finally realizing how much Clark means to her. This book picks up a few months later with Marty secure in her role as Clark's "better half", and expecting their first child. The book covers about 13 years in under 300 pages. Marty finds the courage to reach out a helping hand to her neighbors in need, even as her responsibilities at home increase with each new addition to their family. It was refreshing to see the love and care that thrived in a community of believers. The Larson girls - Nandry and Clae - come to live with the Davises when their mother dies. Tommy Grahm comes to Marty for advise about an Indian girl he is pretty sure his parents would not approve of. Marty makes sure she is there when Wanda Marshal's baby arrives. A teacher, and later a preacher, come to the town. Yeah, there are a lot of sub plots, and really no main plot. This is a bed time story book; something to read a little of every night, and glean something good to think about from. I like this book pretty well, but there are some things I find rather annoying. For example, Ms Oke has an odd tendancy to name girls masculine names, and boys feminine names. I mean, Clae is a girl, and Clare is a boy, when it would sound more naturual the other way around. Kinda funny. Also, there were so few conversations between the main charactors. Only two or three heart-to-hearts between Clark and Marty, and only ONE recorded conersation between Nandry and Clae! There really ought to have been two books written to cover so many years, but, for what it is, it's really good. Watch the movie, too. It does a much better job with Missie and Willie's romance.

5 out of 5 stars Different then the movie.......2006-03-26

I really liked the movie.....but the book is different, but i guess movies have to be very dramatic. The book started when Missie was still little. I still enjoyed the book.

    Book Description

Miah and Ellie are in love. Theirs is a rare and special first love. But the people around them don't see it that way. They can only see black and white: Miah is black, Ellie is white, and Jewish; and their love, no matter how real, is too strange and scary for the world they live in.

5 out of 5 stars why is this book in the sexual abuse section?.......2007-07-21

It is not about sexual abuse/rape. I don't think there's even a mention of it.

Anyway, I read this when I was about 13 and liked it a lot. It's about a white girl who falls in love with a black guy and how their friends and families have more of a negative reaction than they would expect. I guess it's kind of an "issue" book, but it is well-written and the relationship between the boy and the girl is sweet, believable, and unique. They're not stock characters who were just invented so the author could make a point.

I feel like I should mention, it doesn't have a happy ending.

5 out of 5 stars If You Come Softly.......2007-05-07

In this book there's a teenage girl named Ellie who falls in love with a another boy her age, named Jeremiah. In this book, it is filled with romance and love which teaches you so much in life. The ending in this book really does teach you about life, even though it is sad, it is a really great way to end this book. I couldn't imagine another ending for this book that makes you think about your life and how much you love the people around you. This book got me into all of Jacqueline Woodson's books. - Kana

    3 out of 5 stars The Ending.......2007-03-21

On her very first day at the prestigious Percy Academy, Ellie bumps into another student and drops her books all over the floor. As the two of them scramble to pick them up, Ellie feels a special connection with this boy--Miah. He feels it, too, and hopes to see her again.

When Ellie and Miah end up in the same history class a month later, their feelings haven't changed. They begin to fall deeper and deeper into a relationship, and they realize that they seem to be meant for each other. Ellie and Miah are in love.

The problem with their love is the fact that Ellie is white and Miah is black. When they walk down the street together, they get dirty looks from people. Old women ask Ellie if she's okay. Everywhere are people who think they shouldn't be together. And Ellie is worried that her family may consist of people like that, people who only see Miah as black, rather than as a boy she loves.

I loved both Ellie and Miah. They were strong characters, secure in themselves and willing to stick by each other. I liked that Miah is not a black stereotype, and I liked the complexity of Ellie's relationship with her mother. However, the ending of this book ruined it for me. It allowed the author to get off the hook, to escape from explaining the ways Ellie and Miah would handle their relationship. The ending was a lousy choice to make.

3 out of 5 stars It was okay-- you should read this book.......2007-02-15

I like this book because Jeremiah and Ellie have a good relationship. The way they started having a good relationship is because at school they were holding each other hands. Then as it got further in the book they started kissing. Then they were also skipping school to go to Central Park and spend time with each other. Miah was also introducing his family to Ellie.

The reason why I don't like the book is because at the end of the book, the police thought Miah was the man they were looking for so they shot Maih and he was alive for a while. Then after he thought about Ellie and his family, he fell right out and died.

4 out of 5 stars This book is Amazing!.......2007-02-13

This book If You Come Softly is a good book for those out there that think color is something bad. It doesn't matter what color on the outside, it's about a person inside. This book is about a girl that dreams for the best about a boy and wants to be with him forever. The characters are a boy named Jeremiah who is black and a girl named Ellie who is Jewish. They both go to Percy Academy together. They met in the hallway. Something happened that Ellie never thought about a person. She cares so much about Miah and didn't care what people thought.

What I like about this book is girls at school always care about a look or the outside but not the inside. Nowadays people stay in a relationship that deals with love and passion and respect. This book is a lesson for me to know that some boys always care about having sex and getting girls pregnant. But Miah isn't like that. Miah has many feelings about Ellie and never thought that a relationship could feel this way. I really loved this book and my review of the book is good!!!

In Book 6 of the "Love Comes Softly" series Janette Oke has helped her characters grow with new challenges and decissions to make. She continues to span the years with her characters. A must read.

4 out of 5 stars A Lovely Surprise for this Skeptic........2006-06-03

I have mostly shied away from Christian novels, especially Janette Oke's, but decided to pick this one up and give it a try. Instead of getting a preachy, dry as sandpaper story, I was surprised to get a nice, wholesome story of an incredibly warm and likable family full of strong characters and a good plotline.

I found the rivalry between the girls over the schoolteacher's son both humorous and as frustrating as Marty did, and liked the way Belinda's family subtley reached out to the Simpsons who were too proud to accept charity from any of the neighbors. My favorite characters in this book had to be Marty, Belinda, and her relationship with her older brother Luke as she learned nursing by doing. More than anything, I got Oke's unmistakable message in this book: When you want to win someone over to your beliefs, you don't ram them down their throats, but by patiently waiting as you set an example that will eventually draw them in.

    5 out of 5 stars Good Story.......2005-10-24

The last 3 books in the Love comes softly series are my favorites. I can really relate to Belinda. I can remember feeling left out when the cute boy always nocited by friend. Also I often feel like I am not sure what to do next in my life. A very good story with a supprising ending that you wont want to miss.

    4 out of 5 stars Belinda is a tenderhearted teenager......with nieces.......2003-08-14

Belinda is a teenager. Her closest friends are Melissa (her niece from the West) and Amy Jo the daughter of Clare. The three girls have very different personalities but all love each other...until....one handsome young man comes to their school. Knowing Jackson threatens their friendship for a time.

Belinda cannot bear anything in pain or dying, so she just naturally rescues whatever is maimed. This leads to her brother Luke asking her to help him in his doctor rounds. Belinda has found her calling even at her very young age.

The Davis family continues to be a Godly influence on their community and it zones in on the Simpson family. Young Drew, 17, is seriously injured in a logging accident and Dr. Luke is forced to amputate his arm. The results provide an exciting book to add to Oke's Love Comes Softly series.

5 out of 5 stars An aunt and two neices.......2001-01-01

Belinda, Clark and Marty Davis' late in life child is soft hearted, hates to see any living creature hurt or dead. Her brother Luke, now a doctor encourages her to become a nurse. He feels she has medical potential. Melissa, Belinda's neice comes from the west to finish high school and then later trains to become a school teacher. Amy Jo, Clare and Kate's daughter, who has a very close friendship with Belinda becomes especially close to Melissa and Belinda feels her and Amy Jo will no longer have the closeness they have once had. All three girls become involved with the sam guy.

I loved this book. It was such a fun and sweet story.

4 out of 5 stars Belinda's story - her job, her life and her loves........2003-11-10

Belinda is featured in this seventh book of the series. Her brother, Dr. Luke has trained her well and she is working full time as his nurse. Her job takes a twist when a wealthy, elderly socialite suffers a stroke on the train and must be taken off and cared for in their small town. After the critical period, Belinda then becomes a private duty nurse in their small town.

Meanwhile, she has seen her 2 best friends and nieces Melissa and Amy Jo marry and move out west. Nursing has consumed so much of her time that she has hardly realized that life is passing and she does becomes aware of TWO possible suitors at the same, exact time - Jackson has returned as a Doctor and joins Luke's practice. Rand is an up and coming builder who has plans for a home for Belinda and himself. An offer to accompany the rich old woman to her home in Boston removes Belinda from the predicament of 2 suitors and no real love on her part.

Not only does she accompany, but she stays on at the Boston mansion of her employer. Never has she seen or even dreamed of such finery but she does learn to adjust. "Aunt Virgie" thinks of Belinda more as a daughter than a nurse which causes no small stir among the other household help. Matters are complicated even more when the old woman's grandson Peter comes to America for a visit. Will a friendship or romance develop between the two young people? Aunt Virginia hopes so, to keep her beloved Peter nearby.

Belinda travels abroad with her employer, and even though she is experiencing once in a lifetime events, she is empty and dissatisfied inside. Has she traded her peace of mind in a tiny prairie town for a life of luxury and discontentment?

I am excited to begin book eight in this series, Love Finds a Home.

Her new life is much different from the one in the West, but Belinda adapts and enjoys her new life. Janette Oke has written this series so well that you feel that you are there and a part of the Davis family. This book is as rewarding as the six before it. Happy Reading!
