Customer Reviews:
I liked it but was also bored.......2007-02-19
I never really saw Dunford as a "rake". Henry was a little bit annoying. Overall only a passable read. I have probably read way too many romance novels. I probably would have like this one if it was one of the first that I had read. Since it's not, I was bored during parts of it.
Fun, engaging romance from one of my favorite authors.......2006-12-06
When he inherits a title and a country home from a distant relative, William Dunford is as surprised as he is appalled. He knows nothing about the country, has no idea how to run a farm, and has never even been to Cornwall--the home of this country estate. He goes to Stannage Park with every intention of finding someone to run the place, and getting back to London as soon as possible. What he doesn't plan for is that the estate manager is a charming girl who he might fall for.
Henrietta Barrett, or Henry as she prefers to be called, has been at Stannage Park since she was orphaned at the age of eight. Twelve years later, she acts as the estate manager for the land, and knows it better than anyone else. When she learns that some sissified London dandy is coming to her home, she believes that he will toss her out on her ear and let the land that she loves go to waste. She makes plans to get rid of him as soon as he arrives, but doesn't count on the fact that he'll be so handsome and charming.
Minx is the first Julia Quinn novel I've read that isn't a part of her Bridgerton series, and I have to say that I like it equally as much as those, if not more. Henry was such a breath of fresh air with her candid views and boyish charm. I can see why Dunford fell for her when he's so used to simpering London heiresses who fall at his feet. Alternately, I loved Dunford for his rakish charm and willingness to launch Henry into society before claiming her for himself. The two of them were an interesting, and engaging couple and I was glad when they finally admitted their love for each other. The inevitably twist at the end of the book that tests the couple's love also didn't go on for too long, which I've found can be annoying in most romance novels. All in all, this was a nicely packaged story from one of my favorite romance authors. I'd definitely recommend it to a friend.
absolutely beautiful.......2006-04-13
I bought this book with the new cover -- it's the blue one. The cover is so beautiful. However, the book itself is way more beautiful! I'm really glad that Quinn changed the cover of Minx because I probably wouldn't have bought this book in it's original cover. (I stay away from historical romances with half naked people on the cover. I commute every day to my college and read in the bus or I'll get bored staring out the window for 40 minutes. I just wouldn't want to read a book in the bus with a half naked people on its cover.) Anyway, if you don't see this book with its new cover, you still have got to buy this book with the original cover. It is FABULOUS! I think that all romances should have good covers because covers with half naked people make some romance readers not read the book -- then they miss out on such a beautiful book like this!!! Sorry, if this part of my review is unhelpful, but I've really got to say this because so many romances out there have "bad" covers and I stay away from them. People should definitely not stay away from this book just because of its original cover.
This book made me laugh, cry, and smile. The characters were so descriptively written and well developed. It was like you really knew these people in real life. I read the reviews here and a lot of people said that the last 50 pages weren't neccessary. I totally disagree -- if not for the last pages, the book would not have included an obstacle for the couple. EVERY romance has to have a struggle between the hero and heroine or else the romance novel would be either: 1)boring, 2) cheesy and unrealistic, or 3) filled with nothing but sex. This book is the book that has now made me a huge fan of Julia Quinn!
Great read.......2006-03-09
This is not one of my favorite Julia Quinn books. I enjoyed it though. I thought Henry was a bit harsh and William a bit too fussy.
Minx.......2006-01-29
I liked this book because the heroine is a bit different than the norm for this genre. Henrietta (Henry) refers to herself as a freak, but she has simply not been gently reared and has had to adopt some masculine qualities to survive and run the farm for many years. Our hero,
Dunford made her realize that she hadn't completely lost her femininity. Like most of Quinn's female characters, Henry is hoydenish, witty and bold.
I liked Dunford because of his wittiness. I often had to laugh aloud at some of the dialog from him.
What I felt the book lacked was a mysterious or dangerous plot. For me romance is good, but just not enough to carry a book to 5 stars.
While the secondary plot about Dunford's x-mistress was good, it was too predictable. I just knew Henry would have to check out the midnight meeting and draw the wrong conclusions.
It was nice revisiting Belle and John, as well as Alex and Emma.
I could endure a mediocre book if only to revisit old favorite characters. Keep up the series books, Julia!
Book Description
Who says crime doesn't pay?
A year ago, Samantha Jellicoe robbed from the rich and gave . . . to herself! Now, though, she's using her larcenous skills for good as a private security consultant, trying to walk the high road for her sexy billionaire boyfriend, Richard Addison, and asking herself if there's anything more torturous than tracking down priceless artifacts (only to give them back!).
So when the Metropolitan Museum of Art asks for her help, she's only too happy to leap into the fray again: If nothing else, this adventure will help her avoid that little (not!) sparkly item Rick's been hiding in his pocket, and postpone another kind of walk—down the aisle. It's only when she's targeted by a deadly adversary after the same treasure that Sam starts to think that "till death do you part" is maybe the lesser of two evils . . .
Customer Reviews:
Hope this is not the last book in this series!.......2007-10-05
It has a year since Samantha Jellicoe met her hot billionaire boyfriend Richards Addison. For their one year anniversary Rick bought Sam a hundred thousand dollar gift certificate for the garden Sam plan on renovating but really Rick wanted to get Sam a engagement ring. Since Rick knows that if he pushes Sam for marriage then Sam might leave him but still Rick decides to take a chance and so he goes head and buys a engagement ring without telling Sam. Rick keeps on giving subtle hints to Sam about marriage and having kids to let her know that he wants her in his life forever.
Meanwhile, Sam gets a call from Dr. Joseph Viscanti, the director of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, asking her to recover artifacts that were stolen back to the museum. Sam agrees to do it enough though Rich doesn't want her take this job since it could be dangerous. Sam also gets a call from ten-year-old Olivia Donner (Rick's best friend's daughter) and Olivia wants Sam to find Anatomy unit that was stolen from her school.
I really enjoyed reading this book. I love the fact that they getting more serious with their relationship. Rick and Sam really have good chemistry. I really like the fact that in this book we finally get to see Rick relax more and works less because usually he always working. Sam is great throughout the book but I really didn't like the fact that each time Rick and Sam got into arguments, Sam always made it seem like Rick was pushing her too much and that he is wrong for trying tell what to do. Loved the secondary characters like Stoney, Tom, and Aubrey (I kept wondering if he really was gay or straight but I think I agree with Sam on this). *Might be Spoiler* I thought the end came out of nowhere and it seemed like a cliffhanger. I mean when Rick pops the question, I really wanted to see from Sam's and not just Rick's point of view because and I want know what was going through Sam's mind and what made her change her mind since earlier in the book when Sam figured out that Rick was going to propose she freaked out. Also I was excepting Rick to do something romantic when he was going to ask Sam to marry him but it really was let down on way he did it. Overall, I really like it and I'm really hoping there will at least one or two more book in this series because I want the next book to be about their wedding and see how Rick and special Sam hands their wedding.
lighthearted madcap escapades .......2007-10-02
One year ago, American cat burglar Samantha Jellicoe and British billionaire Rick Addison met and fell in love. He wants to make their relationship permanent, but she has doubts as she never allows him to speak the unmentionable. Rick needs to find a way to persuade Sam they belong together.
The reformed ex-thief Sam works on two cases. She works on recovering an ancient Japanese armor and its related swords stolen from the MOMA over ten years ago, and finding and return the missing "anatomy man" to the school it was taken from for her client, Rick's sort of ten year old niece Olivia Donner. Neither seemed complex when she took them on; so why is both a struggle worse than sky diving into a museum to purloin an artifact as one especially could end her career with her death.
The latest FLIRTING WITH DANGER Sam and Rick caper continues the lighthearted madcap escapades of the pair as they argue over how many cat lives she has left. The story line is fast-paced as Sam works her two cases with the zeal she had as a thief. Fans of the series will appreciate the ongoing skirmishes as Addison struggles to persuade his beloved that this BILLIONAIRE PREFER BLONDES retired cat burglars while also pleading with her to change careers to one in which the motto has nothing to do with DON'T LOOK DOWN.

I love this series, and I think this book is almost as good as the first one. There is a lot of Sam-Rick interaction, which is why I read them!!

Customer Reviews:
The best book I've read all year.......2007-10-09
After terrorism strikes Metro City, Jane's parents move the family to the suburbs, but Jane can't seem to make friends with the few people who interest her. Eventually she enlists these "losers" in a bold guerilla art project that could bring to life both the conformist suburban town and Jane's own adrift self. This moving graphic novel layers meanings into both the drawings and the text, and, like Jerry Spinelli's Stargirl (Readers Circle), celebrates art, creative nonconformity, and risk-taking.
Art Saves?.......2007-08-31
Art saves and art heals are the themes of The Plain Janes a graphic novel created in the MINX imprint, a new line of graphic novels that uses the popular media to tell stories that traditionally would be done in written format.
Jane was walking the streets of New York when a bomb went off near her. Her parents freak out and move the family to the suburbs to protect their darling Jane. But Jane wants to stay in the city so she can keep visiting her comatose friend, a man she calls John Doe. He has been in a coma since the day of the bombing. She visits him in the hospital and has taken up sketching to honor him, since he was carrying and dropped a sketchbook that day. For whatever reason, she takes a major interest in him and feels devastated that she won't be able to continue her frequent visits.
Now she is trying to start a new life. Interestingly enough, she is determined NOT to be in the popular crowd. Instead, she finds paradise in the reject lunch table, at which sits three girls named Jane: a drama geek, a jock, and a whiz kid. Our main Jane doggedly finds ways to connect with these girls until they call her a friend. She wants to use art as therapy for her sadness. During the accident, she found a small dandelion, a thing of beauty that made a different to her in the moment. Now she wants to be a living incarnation of that dandelion, a thing of beauty in the middle of chaos. She and the Janes start an underground group that installs art in the middle of the night. The art is treated maliciously, as if it was gang graffiti instead of whimsically fun. What type of projects do they create? They hang bottles from a tree that give people instructions like sing, play sports, or give someone a hug. They put bubbles in the city fountain. And my personal favorite, they spread stuffed animals over the lawn of an animal shelter.
Her home life conflicts continue, due to her mother, who is convinced she will die if she leaves the suburbs. Her midnight trysts with the Janes are the one shining light in her life.
I like how Jane became friends with the other Janes. She just went after them, trying the activities they liked in order to get close to them. I like how she resisted becoming a popular kid. The concept of this story was very intriguing. But the ending was weak and disappointing. There was no closure, although I don't think there will be sequel. And Jane lets a good friend take a hit for her and tries little to correct the mistake. It felt like a huge buildup with little payoff. Still, the Plain Janes will be enjoyed by girls that long to rail against the system.
Interesting, but not substansial.......2007-07-26
First off, I'll give you a little disclaimer. I'm a 21 year old male, so this book really wasn't written for me at all, but as a writer and fan of comics, I decided to give it a try.
The story is interesting, but Castellucci has a bit of a problem with dialog. The characters really sound like they were written, not how they would talk. It all just has a bit of an exposition feel to it the entire way through.
Rugg's art is effective here, but not all that impressive. It doesn't detract from the story being told, but I also thought it didn't really enhance it
Now, onto the characters. This is where I had the biggest problem with things. The main character of Jane is pretty well nuanced and rounded, but every other character in the book is just a stereotypical cardboard cutout of a cliched character type. The police officer is always screaming, the gay male character is always being so incredibly effeminate it's off-putting, the drama crazed Jane is constantly speaking as if here words were pulled directly from Shakespeare. This is an OK template to build a character off of, but absolutely nobody acts like this in real life. I could understand the use of character types like this in a book designed for children, but I would think that teenagers would desire something a little more dynamic
One other criticism here, and this just really smacks of a first time comic book writer. How in the world does Jane get a phone that automatically picks up and broadcasts in speakerphone without any input from the user? This is absolutely ridiculous, and I really think that it's a very visible crutch that Castellucci uses more than once in the story
All in all though, despite all of my critiques, I mildly enjoyed the book...it's not nearly the worst thing I've ever read, but it just didn't resonate for me. I would like to see what Castellucci can do in the future, but she's going to have to improve over her debut.
Good but not great debut for the Minx line.......2007-05-23
This is the first book from the new Minx line of DC Comics.
As a debut, it is something fairly promising for the line. The previews in the back give me the feeling that much better stuff is coming up as well.
As a comic, the story works and the art is clean and coherent. While the story works, it is far from perfect, there is something missing from most of the story elements. By the standards of other graphic novels, this serves as a breath of fresh air (and hopefully the DC association will get some superhero comic readers to check it out). The author, on her first graphic novel, has an excellent sense of the comic medium, better then some of the higher profile talent that the Big Two have hired.
This gets a recommend from me. If you have the extra time and money then its a good thing to read over an hour or so. But I wouldn't go to the ends of the Earth to hunt it down.
A Trip Down Memory Lane.......2007-05-20
I'm a 27-year-old male, but I could relate to the characters in The Plain Janes. I could especially relate to the protagonist, Jane. Or should I say Main Jane?
Art was an outlet of expression, an outlet of relaxation, for me during high school. Seeing the Janes create art everywhere, as an escapsim from the world, was very interesting. I wish I would have thought of that.
I want to commend the creators of this graphic novel. It was 45-minute read that was better than any television show I saw this week and well worth my money.
Pick up this book if you're interested in fun literature -- and be glad to be P.L.A.I.N.
Customer Reviews:
the love is real.......2000-09-26
Far from perfect, the regency atmosphere lacks depth, the characters lack depth, the plot is a simple formulae that moves mechanically forward. But this love story will fadge. We realy believe that they both care, if only there were a bit more substance to the whole.
very interesting story line........2000-08-30
I liked the heroine Miss Cassandra Stanholte, she is independent, strong willed and stubborn. The Hero, Lord Mumford also has these last two traits, which makes for many good scenes where they both argue and deny their feelings for each other. Luke (Lord Mumford) constantly insinuates himself into Cassies life, feeling that if he doesn't stay close and protect her; that her impetuous ways will land her in great danger, and of course they do, (how else could we have such an interesting story?) You must read Lord Mumford's Minx and find out just what kind of trouble Cassie gets herself into and why.
One more thing: I think that Luke was the perfect name for the hero, but his last name of Mumford just did not fit, I found myself wanting to rename him. But this was the only fault I found with this book. Maybe I should not even have mentioned it; But I wonder if other readers will feel the same? just curious.

A little cute, as far as graphics go, for my taste. However, I really liked the "spiky" main character and enjoyed the story. My Faith in Frankie is still my favorite Mike Carey in graphic form...but this comes in second.
Young teens love this book.......2007-08-16
This is the second in the series I've bought for my granddaughter. She really enjoyed it.
Awesome Tale!.......2007-07-08
A savvy bookseller I know said a friend of his wrote a review in the NY Times saying
that graphic novels are fiction dumbed down(Here I go with another one of my counter reviews):
Re-Gifters is fantastic! Especially for someone like me, 46 y.o., who wants to get a clue
about what teenagers think about today. Don't miss this Minx series! Also, if this
NY Times reviewer has never read Marjane Satrapi's Persepolis and/or
Persepolis II(plus any number of other graphic novels today), she's got another thing coming
re: the intelligence level of certain graphic novels.
Customer Reviews:
My legendary book.......2004-04-23
Like it says on the front of the book, this is for those of you who have ever dumped, been dumped or prehaps lived in a dump (guess that counts us all in). This is a fantastic book that's full of laughs, a bit of lust, and bursting with love. Not only is it a hilarious read, but it's deep and meaningful as well, and you'll definitely be moved by it if you've ever loved, and if not, you'll still love it just because it reads so well.
Being a bestseller doesn't always mean that a book is actually a good book, it just means that a lot of people bought it (a lot of people bought .....'s biography and that was absolute crap), but this is just a work of art. Mike Gayle once again so accurately captures life, love and relationships at their best (even when they are at their worst)with this smasher which by far out did his previous book dinner for two.
That makes 'my legendary girlfriend' the ultimate read (because 'Dinner for two' is hard to beat). It's a side splitting, tear jerking rollercoaster ride of emotion that leaves you scarily aware of just how precious people and love are (because lets face it we take our loved ones for granted) and by the end you'll either be crying, full of warmth or just so emotionally aware you wont know what to do with yourself...or all of the above.
Finally, It's a must read so buy it now....oh but I'm sure you gathered that much already.

SAVE YOUR SELF...........2001-12-04
If I could have given this book a 0, I would have. The book was unlike any other Black Lace books I have read before. Honestly, it was the worst Black Lace book I have read. And I think nothing is more dissapointing than paying for something that is a total waste. I couldn't get into the book, a boring read, and found it somewhat hard to follow--let alone finish it. I would not wish this on anyone else.
Could have been really good but..........2001-12-01
This author has a lovely vocabulary, her style is appropriately formal for a period historical novel and the premise is certainly titillating, but in the end there's not much to the story. Blythe spends far too much time telling us not very interesting things about characters not involved in the basic story line. As a backstory for why the heroine is such a saucy little libertine it would have been fine, but it's not just a little backstory, it takes up more than half the book. It reads like a highschool history book in which each paragraph mentions a different historical person who did something that might've been interesting if you got any detail...which you don't.
The hero is a nonentity, there's a totally unrelated magical interlude with three wiches in a cabin in the woods, there's too much flagellation for folks who aren't into that and not enough for folks who are and what I recall at this moment is that there's very little actual sex in the book. For an erotic novel it takes no time to linger over the sexual details. You hear that people have sex but you don't really experience it.
I will say, however, that if this book was intended to pay tribute to Victorian era erotica, then it hits fairly close to the mark. I don't happen to like much Victorian erotica for the same reason I didn't like this book: it's more tell than show.
Period piece erotic lit just doesn't cut it ..........2001-10-31
The book certainly has all the elements and the author certainly has all the knowledge and skill to make this a wonderfully erotic story, but, I could never really seem to get into it.....
Amy, our beautifull and wanton heroine, seems to slip and slide from England to the royal court of France, King Luis whatever, as we see her both at Lancaster Hall to be introduced to society as the new wife of Ralph Fitzroy, and, the object of the kings lecherous desires at the court .....
Sorry tried as hard as I could to concentrate on the story of the book .... but ... like I want to read erotica and not get a lesson in disjointed histrionics....
