Book Description

Do you want to get ahead in life?

Climb the ladder to personal success?

The secret, master networker Keith Ferrazzi claims, is in reaching out to other people. As Ferrazzi discovered early in life, what distinguishes highly successful people from everyone else is the way they use the power of relationships—so that everyone wins.

In Never Eat Alone, Ferrazzi lays out the specific steps—and inner mindset—he uses to reach out to connect with the thousands of colleagues, friends, and associates on his Rolodex, people he has helped and who have helped him.

The son of a small-town steelworker and a cleaning lady, Ferrazzi first used his remarkable ability to connect with others to pave the way to a scholarship at Yale, a Harvard MBA, and several top executive posts. Not yet out of his thirties, he developed a network of relationships that stretched from Washington’s corridors of power to Hollywood’s A-list, leading to him being named one of Crain’s 40 Under 40 and selected as a Global Leader for Tomorrow by the Davos World Economic Forum.

Ferrazzi's form of connecting to the world around him is based on generosity, helping friends connect with other friends. Ferrazzi distinguishes genuine relationship-building from the crude, desperate glad-handling usually associated with “networking.” He then distills his system of reaching out to people into practical, proven principles. Among them:

Don’t keep score: It’s never simply about getting what you want. It’s about getting what you want and making sure that the people who are important to you get what they want, too.

“Ping” constantly: The Ins and Outs of reaching out to those in your circle of contacts all the time—not just when you need something.

Never eat alone: The dynamics of status are the same whether you’re working at a corporation or attending a society event— “invisibility” is a fate worse than failure.

In the course of the book, Ferrazzi outlines the timeless strategies shared by the world’s most connected individuals, from Katherine Graham to Bill Clinton, Vernon Jordan to the Dalai Lama.

Chock full of specific advice on handling rejection, getting past gatekeepers, becoming a “conference commando,” and more, Never Eat Alone is destined to take its place alongside How to Win Friends and Influence People as an inspirational classic.

5 out of 5 stars My networking bible.......2007-10-09

This is the best book I've read thus far on networking. I try to meet and have lunch with someone new in my organization at least once a month and touch base with existing contacts after reading this book. It is a must have, even for the shy person. This book will help open doors for you. I read and passed this book along to other co-workers and they absolutely loved it. I highly recommend!

5 out of 5 stars You get what you give .......2007-10-06

Generosity over courting someone hoping to get an in...The author points out that the key to success is holding a generous mentality toward others. Being a leader is based on working for and with others not ahead of or independent from them. When you are excited to help others progress their ideas, they will innately do the same for you.

5 out of 5 stars Never Eat Alone.......2007-09-28

What a wonderful read!

At the core of this entertaining book are Keith's suggestions how to build a powerful network of friends and acquaintances. He starts out reasoning that you won't make it (or at least have a real hard time) in today's business world without contacts. What makes him really likeable though is his twist on the motivation and how to approach it. It is clear that he despises the calculating networking jerks that are just out to take something from a new relationship, but are not willing to give anything. On the contrary, his advise is to stretch out to others and offer your help, your advise where you have expertise, and your existing contacts to do the other a favor, and not ask and not even expect anything in return. He argues that return favors will come automatically and plentiful, without you asking for it (through your network, not necessarily from every person you ever helped).

As a personal advise to anybody's development, he offers a three step plan (sounds familiar). Only in the last step he suggests to actively look for people who can help you achieve your goals, and start networking so that you get to know them.

All throughout the book Keith parts with his incredible wealth of knowledge how to handle the most common situations on your mission to create your network, like dealing with the secretaries of powerful people (the gatekeepers), how to warm cold calls, following up, or the art of small talk. I have to say that I discovered many interesting tips that I had not heard or read before. Meanwhile, Keith is really entertaining, and this pearl never gets boring. There is so much information contained about how to start relationships, how to maintain them, and on principle how to be a people attractor that it will take quite a while for anybody to put all these principles to good use.

I admit that some of it may be too intense, and if you are not necessarily inclined or motivated to become a Fortune 500 CEO, some of the material sounds like overkill. Nevertheless, there are many aspects presented and advise given that apply to regular human interactions as well, and if studied and applied should help you become a better communicator and people attractor.

4 out of 5 stars Tip of the iceberg for building relationships.......2007-09-27

Excellent read. Fast read that sets-up a lot of tangible strategies through heartfelt experiences of success and failure. Some great references to other texts that have also turned out to be fantastic reads.

2 out of 5 stars Underwhelmed..........2007-09-23

After significant media PR, I went out and bought this book. Like that great movie your friends (the media) say that you have to see, this one is a pass. After you cut through the fluff, there are two important concepts to be taken away from this book: 1) always be networking and 2) the most effective way to network is to think about how many ways you can give value, provide leads, or be of service to those in your professional network - this goodwill granted will come back to you in spades.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2007-08-13

Read about this recording in other motivational material and finally bought it. Single CD and not to long to listen to on short commutes. Can listen to it over and over and pick up something new each time. Really worth owning and sharing with others.

4 out of 5 stars CD Review.......2007-03-08

Easy to listen to CD. I've listened to this about 3-4 times in my car on the way to work and on the way home. An easy idea to grasp which can be applied to any area of your life.

5 out of 5 stars Looking for a kick in the pants, this is it!.......2007-02-22

It takes a lot to get me motivated, but this did it. It's amazing how something recorded in 1959 (I think) is so relevant now.

I'm currently participating in his 30 day challenge. I'm on day 13 and it's working as it should, completely on track.

I've sent a copy of this CD to a business contact that is also fired up. Since this purchase, I've also purchased, Lead the Field, by Earl Nightingale, but this one is better. Shorter, and better.

Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Change your life forever in 30 minutes!.......2007-02-18

There is no place to spend 30 minutes, and experience as much insight into your own personal life than right here! Common sense will always rule as it did over 50 years ago, and Earl will touch on every corner of this for you, from material gain to coexisting with everyone around you. The funny thing is that my father played this for me when I was probably 10 years old, and while my best friend and I used to make fun of it, I can still remember many of the lines and points now over 40 years later, especially the "now suppose a farmer has some land" one. I was reintroduced this past summer to the recording at age 51 of course now on CD, and have probably listended to it over 100 times since (no kidding). I have listened to it so many times I wake up with it playing in my head, and especially love sharing it with my family! Do yourself a favor no matter what age you are, and get with this now! I cannot imagine what the world could be like if everyone had a chance to hear, and live this philosophy!

5 out of 5 stars Classic!.......2006-12-30

It's a great, classical, motivational listen. He doesn't exactly say it this way, but it boils down to this, "You can choose your V. You can choose to be a victim or choose to be a victor. The choice is yours."

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Quick read, excellent content.......2007-08-23

I would title this book, "The language of leadership". It's content is excellent and well organized. It teaches ways to speak and act like a leader and therefore command such authority through the power of the spoken word.

The chapter titles all begin with "Power", but the author practices what he preaches by getting across the information in a well organized and easy to get through manner. If you look at the highlights in each chapter and skim through, you get the jist of information, hence making it easy to comprehend in a day.

Every chapter has its content and then real life examples from the author's experience. The examples are both historic and contemporary, very useful, convincing & often interesting, although ocassionally unecessary to get the message accross.

The criticisms I've seen of this book are that it is patronizing or too long winded or redundant. I don't find any of these things to be true. I however admit, that instead of reading the book cover to cover and sentence by sentence, I read it as any executive would read a proposal or document - skim to get the highlights and then go back in for more detailed reference when needed. I got a great deal out of the book this way.

I purchased the book for a Dean of a Business school and a high power executive. While skimming through it, I found myself quite absorbed. Since then, I've found myself continually thinking back to what I read there and I ended up buying myself a copy for reference and one as a gift for the CEO of my company as well.

Makes a great gift for a Type A executive or anyone in a position of leadership of any kind. This isn't just a public speaking book, and it's not about overcoming shyness or a "Toastmasters" type thing. It's about how to make what you say be powerful and effective.

4 out of 5 stars You should own it if you plan giving speeches.......2007-02-14

Well written with great examples. Not your typical textbook, which makes for a refreshing approach to leadership classes.

5 out of 5 stars Delivers.......2006-07-13

Unbelievable that no one taught me these principles years ago. This guy has been around a long time! Excellent, easy to read and incorporate.

3 out of 5 stars speaking like churchill.......2006-07-03

This is an excellent book for speakers os any level who wish to make small yet noticeable improvements to their speaking performance. Churchill and Lincoln both mastered the skills necessary to be great speakers. The greatest secret that I took from this book is the power of the ..... PAUSE. To stand in front of a group of people saying nothing , with poise and confidence , is a skill the truly seperates great speakers from the rest.
I would recommend this book without hesitation.

4 out of 5 stars worthwhile reading.......2006-04-02

Good book. Nevertheless the author could make it better by cutting off some of the quotes that here and there become excessive in number and extension. This is particularly true for the chapters "power wit", "power poetry" and "power line". They are tiresome -- even boring -- when prolonged beyond the necessary. This only proves that you can have too much a good thing. When it happens good becomes less good and enticing becomes exhausting.
If you think your readers - and especially your audience - should be protected against fatuous speeches, empty words and their monotonous delivery, read this book and keep a copy at hand.

Book Description

Foundations are a peculiarly American institution. They have been the dynamo of social change since their invention at the beginning of the last century. Yet they are cloaked in secrecy- their decision-making and operations are inscrutable to the point of obscurity-leaving them substantially unaccountable to anyone.

Joel Fleishman has been in and around foundations for almost half a century...running them, sitting on their boards, and seeking grants from them. And in this groundbreaking book he explains the history of foundations, tells the stories of the most successful foundation initiatives-and of those that have failed-and explains why it matters.

The baby boomer generation is going to participate in the largest transfer of wealth in history when it passes on its assets to its successor generation. The third sector is about to become more powerful than ever. This book shows how foundations can provide a vital spur to the engine of the American, and the world's, economy-if they are properly established and run.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Examining a Big but Little Known Area.......2007-03-09

Foundations are a subset of Non-Profit organizations that have become surprisingly big busines in the United States. Somewhere around 1/7th of the business in the country is conducted by these organizations. Somewhere around 1/9th of the workforce is employed by one. They have become an integral part of the American economy.

In this book Mr. Fleishman looks at Foundations (a number of which he has been associated as employee, trustee or some other capacity). He examines what makes a foundation successful, and how some have failed. He offers insight and advice on how to make a foundation more successful, and at the same time how foundations should have an obligation to become more accountable since they received special tax considerations from the Government. He suggests that this accountability should be done by the foundations voluntarily. However, Mr. Fleishman is an attorney and believes that if voluntary response is not forthcoming then new legal requirements should be placed upon them to require more openness.

5 out of 5 stars Deserves serious reading from people who want to make a difference........2007-02-06

Joel Fleishman's book lays an excellent bedrock of history underneath its discussion of philanthropy as a great element of American tradition. We live in days of some staggering examples - from Warren Buffet's living bequest of billions, to the fine work of Bill and Melinda Gates - and many others. But rather than see this as some product of the new millennium - Fleishman shows how the new avatars of corporate generosity are following a fine tradition. More than this, the author shows that certain gifting strategies have been leveraged for huge social benefit. For those who are thinking - at whatever scale - of giving to support a cause, this book sets out the strategies that have produced most benefit. This is an excellent, thoughtful piece of work on a topic that currently has wide currency. Well worth reading.

5 out of 5 stars Grant-Writing book recommendation.......2007-09-11

This book is very well-organized, presenting the information in a step-by-step manner that makes it manageable for neophyte would-be grant-writers. I have no doubt that it will serve me well as a continuing resource even as I gain skills and experience.

4 out of 5 stars Helped me through my class!.......2007-05-14

I used this book for a grant writing class I've taken and found it to be a great guide. It's written well and very user friendly. This is definately a book that I'll keep and use through the years when it comes to writing future grants! The resources in the back are helpful and it's fun taking the quizzes and realizing how much I know. Good book...worth buying.

3 out of 5 stars More for organizations than individuals.......2007-04-05

It more geared towards someone writing for grants for a non-profit as opposed to artist/business grants.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Guideline.......2007-01-10

Outstanding guideline for anyone needing advice and direction
in regards to writing proposals. Also shows how to present your
group or organization in the best light.

4 out of 5 stars I enjoyed this book.............2006-11-14

This was the first grant-writing book I ever purchased. It has been some time indeed. This is a quality book, but it doesn't provide alot of sources for funding. I would suggest Government Funding and You for a more complete view. But I would very strongly suggest this book.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A great book on communication, presentation and persuasion.......2007-05-09

First of all, I must confess that I was a little prejudiced against the author and his book before reading it. I simply regarded it as a gimmick of a not so successful magician who wrote just to promote himself. I had been terribly wrong. Riding on his five maxims of magic, (1. be bold 2. expect success 3. dont state - suggest 4. practice, practice, practice 5. be prepared), with plentiful of interesting anecdotes, the author did teach much on how to improve one's skills on communication, presentation and persuasion, the important qualities of a successful magician who did private performance for Mr. Bloomberg, the Japanese Emperor and so on. He even covered on breathing and acupressure exercises, reading eye movements, which I really found them helpful. The use of words in Chapter 10 is profound. Perhaps the only drawback is that he had taught very little on how to do magical tricks. Anyway, a very useful book for all. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Important, practical, and useful book.......2007-03-17

In Win the Crowd, Steve Cohen not only teaches how to think like a magician, he explains why it's important to think like a magician. This is the best self-help, success-in-business book I've ever read. I wish I read it 30 years ago, but of course it wasn't available then.
Cohen teaches how to approach relationships and business from a whole new direction, and shares practical applications that can be applied immediately. Whether your crowd is one or a thousand, you'll learn how to win them over.
You'll even learn a few magic tricks along the way. In doing so, and with some of the other insights he reveals about magic, you'll learn that everything isn't always what it seems, and this in itself is important for success in life.

5 out of 5 stars Get Motivated ~nt.......2007-02-12

Enjoyed the book. I don't recommend doing the "quarter slip" but the concept of what the author is trying to get across is enlightening.
Basically if your going to get ahead you can't be afraid and confidence (without conceit please) is key.

5 out of 5 stars Bring a little magic into your life.......2006-10-10

Not everyone wants to be a practicing magician, but everyone needs to bring a little magic into their lives. None of us makes a pretension to be as captivating as a professional magician or Las Vegas showman, but we are all captivated by these people and wish that we could harvest some of their charismatic power for our personal and business lives.

Wouldn't you like to learn how a magician can focus his eyes on you, so that you become mesmerized by his gaze and feel that you must follow each one of his moves? Wouldn't you like to learn how a Las Vegas showman gives "presence" to his human frame - sometimes despite his actual size - and "fills" the room with his personality? Have you ever wondered how a magician gets you to focus on one part of his body, while another part of his body is actually putting the trick together?

What Steve Cohen conveys to you is that these are simple techniques, but they require almost daily practice. Steve talks about "eye contact" drills you can perform while you're walking through the mall, "posture" drills you can practice before your next big presentation, and "misdirection" techniques that, somewhat contradictorily, actually help focus your audience's attention on you.

You can read books about public speaking, which all repeat the same mantras about "eye contact," "breathing," and "body language," or you can take Steve's unorthodox approach to give your speeches a little "magic."

Steve's book is extremely well-written, and very entertaining. A little bit of talk about "magic," but nothing that would make a non-practitioner's eyes glaze over.

5 out of 5 stars You don't have to be a magician to love this book!.......2006-07-05

You don't have to be a magician to love WIN THE CROWD
by Steve Cohen because
it applies to virtually any profession and/or thing that
may do in life.

Cohen, aka The Millionaires' Magician, entertains celebrities,
tycoons and aristocrats at private events the world over . . . he
also performs his public show, CHAMBER MAGIC, at New
York's famous Waldorf-Astoria Hotel . . .and as a result
of reading his book, I'm going to try to make a performance
in the near future.

I want to see how commanding, convincing and charismatic
he is--all traits he shows you how to develop in CHAMBER
MAGIC . . . now if this sounds like a bit much to promise,
consider the following game that the author plays:

As quickly as you can, answer the following questions:
1. How many fingers does one man have on his hands?
2. How many fingers on ten hands?

If you're like most people, you answered "ten" and "one hundred."
The first answer is correct. The second answer is wrong. Go back
and read it again. (If you still can't figure it out, I'll help; it is
"fifty.")

This shows what misdirection is all about. It moves you down
a particular path and puts you in a certain state of mind. You'll
learn this technique and many, many others as well.

You won't become an accomplished magician; in fact, there's
only one trick that he actually shows you how to do. However,
you'll gain many other valuable tidbits that you can use in
countless situations . . . among them:

* When I read the previous sentence to a friend of mine, a successful
businesswoman, she said, "That is so true!" She lives by the following
aphorism: "Don't ask first; just apologize later." Instead of running a
new idea by her boss, she just goes ahead and tried it out. According
to her, too many "managers" are entrenched in their ways of doing things
and are likely to say no to something new. She just plows ahead and
does it on her own.

* If you're supershy, start in a nonthreatening, location such as an elevator.
The next time you are on the elevator with a stranger, break the silence
and compliment her. That's right. Find something noteworthy about that
person and say, "That's a nice (sweater/hat/watch) you're wearing. I
like it." This simple act forces the person to react. You've taken a risk,
and you've taken control of the situation. You've done something bold.
Bravo! If the stranger ignores you, or thinks you're a creep, don't worry.
You'll both be getting off the elevator soon enough. The pain of rejection
will come and go so quickly that you'll never even notice it. If you're not
in the habit of speaking to strangers, you'll be pleasantly surprised
at how easily people will chat with you. If you're shy, challenge yourself
to compliment five people daily. This is your first step toward conquering
shyness.

* When I was a student at Tannen's Magic Camp, professional magician
Tom Ogden explained how he handles incoming phone calls. When
someone calls for a potential booking, he taught us:

1. Say, "One moment, let me check my date book."
2. Put down the phone.
3. Go make a sandwich.
4. Come back.
5. Pick up the phone and say, "Yes, I'm available that day."

If you jump quickly at someone's offer to buy from you, you appear
desperate. Never appear too eager to make a sale. Ogden was clearly
joking about the sandwich, but it served as a lesson, reminding us to
hesitate before saying yes.

Book Description

How do highly paid professional speakers put magic and motivation into every talk? Lilly Walters, Executive Director of Walters International Speakers Bureau, reveals their secrets and strategies in this practical, conversational guide. Mark Twain reputedly said it took him three weeks to prepare an impromptu speech, but readers of Secrets of Successful Speakers will do it in days-or minutes. This book spells out the rules in 11 easy-to-follow steps, each accompanied by interactive exercises. Readers will learn to: set objectives before writing; customize the talk for each audience; conquer stage fright; cultivate a reputation as an expert; develop themes for each presentation; organize material in memorable manner; edit for best effect; project a professional "platform image" through personality, voice, and clothes; motivate audiences to change their actions and attitudes; involve listeners by using humor, heart, and audience participation exercises; deal with problems and pitfalls ranging from poor staging and faulty audio-visual equipment to hecklers and questions of ethics. This authoritative and accessible guide also contains fascinating anecdotes of well-known personalities and how they mastered the art of public speaking. It will quickly become the reference of choice for trainers, lawyers, doctors, managers, and everyone who makes presentations or gives talks.

5 out of 5 stars This book is worth its weight in gold!.......2006-07-08

Lilly and Dottie Walters have contributed volumes to the world of professional speaking. All of their books provide veteran and upcoming speakers alike with the resources, tips, and guidelines needed to be successful. This book is another example of the quality and care the Walters provide in all aspects of their speaking enterprise. I found this book to be most helpful in planning and writing my public speaking presentations as well as in my daily lesson preparations as a secondary school teacher. Lilly Walters presents page after page of straight forward approaches to capturing and keeping any audiences attention as well as numerous methods of achieving and reinforcing the exact message you were aiming at delivering. This is a must have on every public speaker's and educator's book shelf. My name is Kelly Croy. You can learn more about me and how I use this excellent book by Lilly Walters on my website at www.kellycroy.com.

2 out of 5 stars Too Many Cooks.......2005-09-07

There are plenty of good books on public speaking - and this is NOT one of them. For several reasons.

First and definitely most importantly - it regularly contradicts itself. For example, on the subject of humor and the person who is to introduce you:

"...If it looks like they are going to read some big long thing, give them some quick funny story to say instead." Dr. Ken Blanchard

"Never give and introducer 'risky' material that requires comic timing." Tom Ogden

So, assuming that Mr Ogden meant "material which requires comic timing is 'risky'," we have two "experts telling us, one straight after the other, to (1) get the introducer to tell a funny story, and (2) avoid asking the introducer to tell a funny story!

This confusion is mainly down to the author's choice to use a vast collection of quotes from people she presumably regards as "expert speakers," interspersed, from time to time, by her own thoughts and observations. Unfortunately, despite her wealth of experience as a head of a "professional lecture agency," or maybe because of it, Ms. Walters has produced a book that is about as superficial as most of the "key note" and "after dinner" speeches I've ever had to witness.

There's a mountain of material here, and SOME of it is genuinely useful, but it's all so mixed up with the dross that you'd have to be something of an expert already in order to know which bits are worth taking notice of, and which are likely to make things worse rather than better. In which case you wouldn't need this book in the first place.

The second important flaw in the book is that it assumes that the "experts" actually know what makes them successful. Which is also unfortunate, since it is widely recognised that "experts" usually have little or no idea as to what their success is really based on. The best they can do is tell you what THEY think they do - hence the conflicting instructions and the highly variable usefulness of the book as a whole.

Thirdly, there is the author's own rather questionable knowledge. In Chapter 5, for instance, there is a section on mind maps, which shows little or no understanding of the subject. To be sure, the author does say, at one point:

"True mind map experts, which I am not, will tell you to use only one word per line along with the pictures."

No they won't. They'll tell you never to use a complete sentence, because if you do you will seriously undermine the main reason for using a mind map. And that's just after they'd tell you that you do NOT have to use pictures all over a mind map, as this author asserts.

The obvious question is "Why describe a technique if you know that you don't really know what you're talking about?" It may fill up some space, but it certainly doesn't do the reader any favours.

If you're the sort of person who gains confidence from getting "Reader's Digest"-sized quotes from a host of big name speakers then you may well enjoy this book. If you want something with a modicum of genuine authority, from someone who writes from an in depth knowledge AND UNDERSTANDING of their subject then you'll need to look elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars A Must for your Library.......2004-08-21

Any person looking to raise the level of their speaking needs to add this book to their library. I personally own every book Lilly has published. As a professional speaker myself and the author of, "10 Days to More Confident Public Speaking" (Warner Books), I appreciate the value of the information in Lilly's book and I recommmend this book to anyone.

5 out of 5 stars A potent concoction of surefire tips and techniques.......2002-11-08

This is certainly one of the best books on public speaking I've read. The only other work that deserves special mention is Jack Valenti's Speak Up with Confidence. Walters gives surefire tips and techniques that are recipe for a successful presentation that may inspire for years.

Her crisp advice on the main requirements of a speech of "passion and compassion with a purpose" is very potent and often leaps off my mind each time I prepare to instruct or make a speech. Walters has carefully drawn from the "secrets" of public speaking pros and concocted them into a surefire formula for success. What's more, her anecdotes and quotes are both entertaining and memorable.

I found myself a better speaker even after reading and applying steps 1 and 2. Wait till I conquer step 11! Thank you Lilly Walters for an absolutely inspiring and terrific book.

Book Description

From Nora Roberts, the incomparable New York Times bestselling author of Sanctuary and Montana Sky, comes a mesmerizing story of a woman trapped by a dangerous desire and threatened by a murderous secret, one of Nora Roberts's most popular novels.

Emma.  Beautiful, intelligent, radiantly talented, she lives in a star-studded world of wealth and privilege.  But she is about to discover that fame is no protection at all when someone wants you dead....

All she has to do is close her eyes and she remembers the magical day her father came into her life.  She was a frightened, lonely toddler, hiding, always hiding, from her mother's wrath, when Brian McAvoy swept in and took her away.  She didn't know then that she was his illegitimate daughter or that she had just been rescued by pop music's rising new star.  All she knew was that suddenly she felt safe.

And there wasn't only Brian...his new wife became Emma's loving stepmother, his band members became her surrogate uncles, and soon Emma even had a new baby brother to care for.  Then just when everything seemed perfect, a horrifying event shattered all their lives: a botched kidnapping attempt, shocking the
world, traumatizing Emma, leaving her bereft of her newfound happiness.

Yet now, after so many years of pain and guilt, of being overprotected and hounded by the press, Emma finally feels as if she's put the tragedy behind her.  A determined, self-sufficient young woman, she has carved out a thrilling career, and even dared to fall rapturously in love.  But the man who will become her husband isn't all that he seems.  And Emma is about to awaken to the chilling knowledge that the darkest secret of all is the one buried in her mind--a secret that someone may kill to keep.

With Public Secrets, Nora Roberts has woven an absorbing tale of a woman you can't help but care for, trapped in a terrifying web of suspense that will
keep you reading long into the night.

5 out of 5 stars It's no secret.......2007-05-09

It's no secret that NR rules. I bought this book when it first came out. I was on a road trip with my parents. I read this book cover to cover 7 times in a week. I'd start finish restart over and over. Most of NR books are great. This one, Private Scandals, Carolina Moon, & Montana Sky are my favorite of her older stuff. She has a wonderful way of inviting her readers along on the adventures with her characters. Some may feel like the've been seen before but somehow I don't care. I love authors that command my attention, whose voice I hear everytime I read their work, Linda Howard, Sharon Sala, Susan Andersen, Ann B. Ross to name several.

5 out of 5 stars an inside view of a rock star's child.......2006-11-26

This book was not what I expected at all, not your typical romantic suspense it follows the life of rockstar Brian McAvoy, his band Devastation from the 60's to present time (1990) through the eyes of Emma. At three Emma is recued from her abusive alcoholic mother and drawn into Brian's world with a step mother and a new found family in his band 'Devastation'.

However at age 6 a single botched kidnapping attempt rips the new found family apart leaving Emma a traumatised and battered and broken.

However life goes and the book follows the nightmares and the struggle of the band family and their personal lives in order living in the public eye, and the equally determined efforts of the detectives put on the case which spans 20 years.

Nora Roberts created a wonderful enrapturing surrogate family in the members of the band for Emma, colourful flawed characters with real issues came through, they all shone brightly and there was fascinating character development in all characters.

I particulary liked the story from the point of view of Emma, Nora successfully captured the essence of a maturing woman from the ages 3 to 25, her choices that paved her path through the years. A inside view of drug addicted rockstars was also pushed forward and the sacrifices that the family had to pay that came with their success.

I guessed the ending... but that's nothing new for me. It was an absolute find and I recommend everyone should read it. It was so vivid and real- I had to stop myself from actually looking it up to see if it was based on a real band. REad this book, you won't regret it.

4 out of 5 stars Sex, drugs and rock and roll - 4.5 stars.......2006-07-15

PUBLIC SECRETS is an intriguing look into the lives of a little girl who grows up in the world of rock and roll, a life that will shape her future.

Emma McAvoy was barely three when she met her father for the first time and her life was changed forever. Everything was perfect; she had a nice home and lots of people who truly seemed to care about her. Then everything changed when her baby brother was murdered in a botched kidnapping attempt. But after years of living with nightmares, things are finally looking up for her. She's now a successful photographer and is in love for the very first time. Yet once again, Fate deals her a huge blow when the man she marries shows his true colors. Not only is she running away from a disastrous marriage, but also being haunted once more by the memory of her brother's murder.

While this book follows the life of Emma from the time her father plucked her out of poverty, to her awkward and sheltered teenage years where she develops her first crush on Michael (the son of the detective investigating her brother's murder), to the time she carves out a career and falls in love with an abusive musician, there are also subplots featuring her father and the three band members whom Emma grew up with that add some twists and turns to the story. In some ways, it was almost like watching (in this case, reading) a soap opera unfold. Nora Roberts has done well in describing the lives of the characters, including their lifestyle and indulgences - from drugs, alcoholism, infidelity and greed. In some ways I found that the middle of the book was dragged out unnecessarily and wished that more focus were given on the romance between Emma and Michael, and less on the secondary characters. Yet at the same time, we are given such lurid details about them that I couldn't help turning the pages to see what happens next.

As for the mystery part, although it isn't hard to figure out the huge secret, the few twists and turns are enough to hold your interest. I just really would have liked to see more development on the romance between Emma and Michael. I had such high hopes from the time they first met when they were very young and their succeeding meetings really had me excited for both of them.

Overall, I enjoyed this book and look forward to reading the others.

5 out of 5 stars The Best.......2006-06-12

Out of all the Nora Roberts books I have read, this is my absolute favorite one!!!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, Excellent Characters and Storyline.......2005-11-17

This is by far one of the very best books I have ever read. Nora Roberts certainly shows her talents as a writer with the character of Emma McAvoy taking the reader through a life-long journey of ups and downs in the pop music world. This story takes place over a 20+ year span as we meet little Emma, not quite 3 years old about to be rescued from her drug and alcohol-dependent mother by a father she has never met. We watch Emma grow amidst the money and madness of a Beatle-like group, her father, Brian, the lead with the other members of the band, Stevie, P.M., and Johonno (each with their own set of issues) taking on the role of surrogate fathers. Emma dreams of living "her" life, minus the security and bodyguards, only to find that there are people out there willing to kill to keep her from remembering a deep, dark secret buried within her soul. People like Drew Latimer, only wanting to be close to Emma to get to her father, were many. She needed to find the life she deserved with a man who would love her for herself and not because she was Brian McAvoy's daughter. Michael Kesserling seems to be just that man, however, there are many problems and mysteries to be solved within Emma herself before she can begin to live the life she so fully deserves. Without revealing the plot, I can only say that "Public Secrets" is a book no one should miss. It is Nora in her early years (1990) and definitely at her best!

4 out of 5 stars Practical.......2007-06-13

If you desire to motivate or keep your audience interested, this is a practical, helpful book.

3 out of 5 stars Less Than It Appears.......2002-05-21

If you do long seminars especially all day, this is the best book for such a developing professional speaker that I have read. If you are looking to build a strong 10 to 30 minutes inspiring and/or motivational speech this is definitely not the book for you. If that is what you are looking for then you want Success Secrets of the Motivational Superstars : America's Greatest Speakers Reveal Their Secrets by Michael Jeffreys. Furthermore, Jeffreys is the best overall book on becoming a great speaker. If you are serious about speaking performance you must read this book. If you want to see what an exceptionally well research book looks like read Jeffreys. It is getting harder to find so don't delay. Indirectly Jeffreys shows you how to research by example. Professional speaking is about being a first class expert. Only then develop an entertaining and humorous format and delivery. Or you could shoot for the lower rung of just being funny. Unfortunately, just being an expert does not put you on the ladder.

With the name Zig Ziglar-- his business associate-- all over this book my hopes were to high. The title (Inspire Any Audience) is overdone. Inspire is a misrepresentation. Keep them interested would be more accurate. Page 121 he advises avoiding words like certainly, positively and others. If the word any is not a violation then it will require a Clinton like explanation for the word "is" or in this case "any" from Jeary.

In chapter 8 "Keeping Their Attention" he introduces the concept of business entertainment-a phrase he has trademarked. In the title he uses the words proven secrets. The big secret is that his explanation of business entertainment is shockingly shallow. The worthy gist of is to do bold things to keep the audience engaged. Sorry, Jeary the command to play music, play games and other categories does not cut it. Explain yourself. I get the drift of it enough to say that is the book that Jeary or someone should write. That book would be fresh and exciting. In fact if that book exists I am going to find it.

On page 96 there is a page on gestures. In nearly every speaking book the author is so afraid of mechanical outcomes that they say trite stuff about be natural or be yourself. Give Jeary credit for making an attempt at giving some specific advise about gestures. The book turns me off on paying big bucks for his in person seminar on presentations at this point. There are lots of little tidbits and minor insights through out the book.

Just--- not a block buster book. It is well above average. Of the 40 plus books on speaking that I have read and reviewed on Amazon this book is at the lower end of the top ten books to read for public speaking improvement. Clearly, a worthy book.

Inspire Any Audience is worth the money and then some but it is not an inspired book that the author was burning to write. It is a darn good survey of techniques to give your customers an interesting day long seminar.

5 out of 5 stars Clear and well written.......2001-12-05

A fantastic book on a topic one easily neglects. The book is very clear written, enjoyable to read and re-read (a must), and devided into 4 parts: Before the Presentation, Beginning your Presentation, The Body of your Presentation, Closing your presentation. Tony Jeary succeeded in packing tons of useful information in that little book. A great book for the serious presenter!

5 out of 5 stars Best presentation book I've read!.......2000-12-26

Jerry presents usable ideas in a clear writing style. His methods force you to discover your target and keep you on-message from the introduction to the final summary and close. His Business Entertainment section is worth the price of the book. A must read for *any* presenter, pro or one-timer.

5 out of 5 stars DEFINITELY improved my seminar delivery skills.......2000-07-08

This book delivers far more than I thought it would when I first purchased it.

My openings have gotten a thousand times better. I've learned how to keep the audiences attention - especially during my longer (2+ hours) seminars. And there's a better flow between changes in topics.

I still pull this book out before all of my major presentations just to make sure I'm still on point. Whether you're a beginner or a professional speaker, I think you'll get a lot of value in this book, not found elsewhere.

Book Description

In 1994, Jonathan Moreno became a senior staff member of a special commission created by President Clinton to investigate allegations of government-sponsored radiation research on unknowing citizens during the cold war. The top secret documents he helped to declassify revealed a shocking truth-- that human experimentation played an extensive role in this country's attempts to build and protect against weapons of mass destruction. In Undue Risk, Moreno presents the first comprehensive history of the use of human subjects in atomic, biological, and chemical warfare experiments from World War II to the twenty-first century. From the courtrooms of Nuremberg to the battlefields of the Gulf War, Undue Risk explores a variety of government policies and specific cases, including plutonium injections into unwitting hospital patients, U.S. government attempts to recruit Nazi medical scientists, the subjection of soldiers to atomic blast fallout, secret LSD and mescaline studies, and the feeding of irradiated oatmeal to children. It is also the first book to go behind the scenes and reveal the government's struggle with the ethics of human experimentation and the evolution of agonizing policy choices on unfamiliar moral terrain. As the threat of foreign and domestic terrorist attack continues to grow, the need for our country to defend itself against insidious weapons is greater than ever. Can a democracy justify using humans in potentially risky experiments in order to answer scientific questions vital to national security? Exploring the possibilities, Undue Risk highlights a program of human experimentation that is a moral model for all others, civilian and military.

Undue Risk: Secret State Experiments on Humans by Jonathan D. Moreno

This very readable book faces the uncomfortable reality of using humans for medical experiments. Government secrecy is corrosive to democracy, and is a true threat to our way of life. The use of human guinea pigs shows something rotten at the heart of society's political rulers.

Chapter 5 tells about radiation experiments. There was a need to study the health risks from inhalation or ingestion to determine the toxic levels. Releasing radioactive products into the air was part of deliberate policy that occurred hundreds of times (pp.153-4). Chapter 6 tells how the Nuremberg Code was adopted for testing ABC weapons (p.166). This rule prevailed in the civilian hierarchy but lacked traction in the military medical culture (p.184); this reflected the political struggles (p.187). Chapter 7 tells of the experiments with hallucinogens as a military secret weapon during WW II (pp.190-1), and afterwards. The Blauer Case tells how state hospitals' experiments killed patients (pp.194-8)! Scanty record keeping on atomic bomb explosions was continued with Agent Orange in Vietnam (p.206). The known dangers from uranium mines were disregarded by the AEC (p.221). Uranium miners fate was to die in their forties for reasons of national security (p.226). After Nuremberg, only America among Western countries experimented on prisoners (p.230).

Chapter 8 tells of the attacks on the Nuremberg Code rules. Pages 252-3 tell why it is legal to experiment on members of the Armed Forces: the Supreme Court said so! Nerve gas experiments were suspended in 1969 (p.263). President Nixon asked for the ratification of the 1925 Geneva Accord to prohibit the first use of biological and chemical weapons. The1977 Senate hearings on the biological testing program resulted in new ethics of research for government agencies (p.265). Chapter 9 tells of the 1991 Gulf War aftermath: many veterans reported illnesses. One explanation was the drug alleged to protect our soldiers caused this problem. PB was never tested or approved, so its use was reckless and a poor experiment (p.269). Pyridostigmine bromide was never approved against chemical weapons (p.270). The FDA created an exceptional "Rule 23(d)". Did PB react with organophosphates to create harm (p.272)? The lack of records prevents any investigation. The last section on '91 Bravo' reads like a very optimistic and cheerful ending to this story.

Undue Risk: Secret State Experiments on Humans by Jonathan D. Moreno

Calling chemical warfare "weapons of mass destruction" is misleading since they are more limited than atomic or biological weapons. Biological weapons can turn against their users. Only atomic weapons have enormous destructive capacity (p.xv). The Advisory Committee on Human Radiation documented secret experiments on humans from WW II to the present day. Biological warfare goes back to ancient times: placing decaying bodies into a water supply or launching them into a besieged fort. There is much more known about biological and chemical weapons today than before 1992. Government secrecy is corrosive to democracy, and is a true threat to our way of life. The use of human guinea pigs shows something rotten at the heart of society's political rulers. This very readable book faces the uncomfortable reality of using humans for medical experiments.

Bacteria and chemicals are hard to control and deliver effectively but relatively cheap to produce and transport. Testing on humans has a long international history, as is hiding these facts (p.4). The Nazi doctors trial at Nuremberg set a standard for military-medical human experiments. Hundreds of other doctors were never tried. A "crime against humanity" was defined as the reckless pursuit of scientific knowledge, or sheer sadism. Experiments on humans predated the Nazis; in 1931 the powerful chemical manufacturers were caught using patients in hospitals (p.64). Then there was America's own wartime research (pp. 65-6). But America was not riddled with a hate-mongering pathology that permitted the systematic injury of certain groups of humans (p.79).

Chapter 4 tells of Nazi scientists brought to America because of their expertise. They now used American soldiers rather than concentration camp victims (p.89)! Similar experiments were done by Japanese Unit 731 (pp.103-7). Their history was kept secret to protect Army biological weapon testing at Fort Detrick, whose budget was second to the Manhattan project (p.109). The US military wanted this information on crop destruction and human experiments. A Soviet war crimes trial documented these facts (p.111-4). Germ warfare charges in Korea and China are discussed on pages 115-6.

I used to work at an ethical review board, and I read whatever books I could find on medical research ethics. This is the most memorable one I read. It was shocking but fascinating. I would recommend this book to anyone working in clinical research or medical ethics.

5 out of 5 stars Chillingly accurate with ominous implications for the future.......2002-06-26

Undue Risk is a clearly and meticulously constructed documentation of over 50 years of medical and military experiments world wide, with an emphasis on those done in the U.S. It is one of the most important books written on the subject, and it is a must read for anyone concerned about the ethics and interests of government.
Moreno limits himself to information that is documentable. He focuses on the medical community as handmaidens to the military establishment. For example, his thorough and horrific accounts of Dr. Ishii's murderous medical experiments on thousands of helpless captives during WWII in Japan, and his grim comment that despite his criminality, Dr. Ishii today enjoys high social status and wealth, partially due to intervention by the United States, are a testimony to Moreno's clear insight into the pervasive nature of intellectual greed and the grand cover-up of government when it wishes to acquire knowledge.
It is unfortunate that Moreno could not cover the misdeeds of the neuro-sciences. But with the neuro/psychopharmacological arsenal of amnesiacs, sedatives, ECT, and hypnosis it is difficult to find those survivors who can clearly articulate the tale of what was done to them in the name of science. To his credit, Moreno does refer to the CIA's MKULTRA experiments, and gives a nice insight into the LSD death of Fort Detrick's Dr. Frank Olsen, who specialized in airborne delivery of disease as a biological weapon. This book is a must read. It is aurhoritative, restrained in nature, but completely accurate.

5 out of 5 stars What an interesting and insightful book.......2000-06-02

Mr. Moreno's stunning account of experiments done by the Nazis was very interesting. His great writing made the book a page turner and I applaud Mr. Moreno for writing it. I am looking forward to reading more of his books.
