Book Description

Dear Reader, Life is great for me. I have my chicory coffee, my warm beignets, and my best friend on the cell phone. Once the sun goes down, I am the baddest thing prowling the night: I command the elements, and I know no fear. For centuries, I've protected the innocent and watched over the mankind, making sure they are safe in a world where nothing is ever certain. All I want in return is a hot babe in a red dress, who wants nothing more from me then one night. Instead, I get a runaway Mardi Gras float that tries to turn me into roadkill and a beautiful woman who saves my life but can't remember where she put my pants. Flamboyant and extravagant, Sunshine Runningwolf should be the perfect woman for me. She wants nothing past tonight, no ties, no long-term commitments. But every time I look at her, I start yearning for dreams that I buried centuries ago. With her unconventional ways and ability to baffle me, Sunshine is the one person I find myself needing. But for me to love her would mean her death. I am cursed never to know peace or happiness-not so long as my enemy waits in the night to destroy us both. --Talon of the Morrigantes

5 out of 5 stars Refugee from a luggage factory...........2007-10-11

This was my first book into the world of the Dark Hunters, and while I was confused for a good two weeks about this world, I fell in love with Talon's heartbreak, and joy when he got his soulmate back.

My gripe with this book is Sunshine. She accepts that she is reincarnated, but fights it every step of the way, thinking Talon loves his dead wife more than her, when in fact she is HER, only with a 20th-21st century upbringing. I wouldn't fight it, I would think it was miraculous to be with my first and only love, but maybe I'm just a sap. :)

4 out of 5 stars A lot to take in, but it is worth it........2007-06-09

I gave it 4, but it's more of a 3.8ish.
The book started out a bit slow, but it began to pick up and by the end I just had to know what the heck was going to happen. I remember at one point I had an amusing notion of a possible unknown 'secret' aspect of a character. And then I tossed it aside and got lost in the story. But lo-and-behold, that little niggling notion popped up in the story. This can be dissapointing in a book, but the way that it was presented and reasoned was great!
The reason for not 'loving-it' and just 'liked and enjoyed' it is because
the first half of the book had so many characters coming in and so much information of the paranormal's presense in the real world that, initially, I was a mite overwhelmed. To the point that I considered that I would not read another of this series (this was the first of her paranormal books I've read). But the book was still good enough that I was determined to finish to see what was in store for our heroes.
Then book managed to pick up about halfway through and I was completely enthralled. I didn't want to put it down for the need to know what was to come.
Now, though the large cast was initially overwhelming, I have to say that they were all good characters. Each interesting enought to grab interest, but were not a major-continuous distraction. And I must commend Mrs. Kenyon for her ability to draw the reader's interest to the cast of secondary characters. Despite the mentioned issue of them all, I become very curious about all these others in the cast. I must now read the other books in this series just so that I can find out what lies ahead for all those introduced in this book. Damn sneaky of the author. :)

Good read. Nice twists. Do need to be able to sort through a lot of info and characters so that you can understand and enjoy rather than be overwhelmed and tripped up with all of the niftyness.

4 out of 5 stars night embrace.......2007-05-18

Sexy and entertaining. One of my favorites from this series. Though sometime predictable, the story line is well written. It will keep you reading well into the night! I am not a romance reader - I love vapire stories! These my freinds - is a good read.

5 out of 5 stars Chicory coffee and warm beignets.......2007-04-25

Chicory coffee and warm beignets are practically the only thing sustaining Talon of the Morrigantes, a Celtic Dark-Hunter who is a little more than under the weather (which he can control). Not to mention that he got run over by the Greek god Dionysus in the form of a Mardi Gras float and now is trapped, until the sun goes down, in the apartment of Sunshine Runningwolf, a slightly over the top artist who needs more than new memory. This Mardi Gras is turning out to be something special indeed!

3 out of 5 stars I like the side characters best.......2007-01-09

This is the 3rd book (if you include Fantasy Lover)in the Dark-Hunter series. I personally think Fantasy Lover was the best as the story line was entertaining and heart wrenching at the same time. The second book, Night Pleasures, was unique and suspenseful. By the third book, Night Embrace, the whole bad boy with the heart of gold and a horrible past that he needs to get over to accept love is a bit tiring. What annoys me most about this book is that most of it is wasted on the two leads repeating "it won't work, I can't have him/her". Well, have you tried!? Sheesh, no wonder it won't work, no relationship will work if the two people in it refuse to figure out what needs to be done to keep it going. Instead of figuring out what they can do to be together, they automatically condemn their future and try every way to justify the relationship will fail.

I personally like the side character's interactions best (and that's a really sad thing to say about a book). I thought the humor between Julian, Kyrian, Vane, Fang, Acheron, etc was witty and entertaining. The heart break and drama between Talon and Sunshine is so rediculous that I kept skipping to the ending. I personally have a hard time believing someone who lasted thousands of years and had his heart so guarded all that time will get so emotionally involved with a perfect stranger. The author spent so much time writing about how horrid his tragic past is and how it scarred him for life that I question why he bother keep going back? I know they're soulmates but how can they tell, obviously conversation was not a big part of their relationship. The basis of their relationship is grunting and dirty talks while doing the deed. Heck he didn't even tell her he was a Dark Hunter, she found out from her friend! So I can only base from my reading that these two had a purely physical relationship and nothing else. So how can their heart "break" and "pain ripped through" them if they don't even really know the other person. Obviously from their past they've had one night stands and they had no problems moving on.

Honestly, this was a luke warm version of Kyrian and Amanda and I expected better from Sherrylin Kenyon. I understand her fanscination with bad boy Greek men, but must they all have long blond (on the occasion black) hair, are seriously wealthy, and over 6 ft (how many middle ages men are that tall?) physical perfections of manhood while the women are plain jane with a touch of girl next door? For once, please have at least half the men be normal and realistic. Oh and must every one of them have that god awful sneer and express their temper through animalistic growls or hissing? You'd think after a few thousand years they would learn to better articulate themselves than grunting?

Is it me or does the author really hate Romans? I know she wrote a Dark Hunter book on Valerius who was a Roman general but seems like everyone else is pretty much Greek. The things said in the books about Romans a very biased and made the good guy an exception instead. Come on, the whole entire Roman race can't be THAT bad. Um are we just a tad biased?

I know we didn't read these books because we wanted reality, but does it have to be this rediculous? At least make it believable. Still, it's served its entertainment value. Just not something I rush back to pick up again though. Personally I am a bit embarassed to buy the books because the cover usually have some scantilly clad beefcake and it gets quite a few looks during check out.

Love those Dark Hunters! She (Kenyan) is one of the best paranormal romance writers ever... right up there with Christine Feehan!

5 out of 5 stars Good fun.......2007-07-28

This set was my introduction to the Dark-Hunter series and I have to say that I am hooked. The story-lines and the character development were far superior to what I was expecting. And heck, they are a fun read.

5 out of 5 stars Great Series.......2007-04-04

A fantastic fictional series. This boxed set inspired me to order several other books from Sherrilyn Kenyon's Dark Hunter Series. I am very pleased with this purchase.

5 out of 5 stars Loved, loved, loved them.......2007-03-09

This was my first taste of Sherrilyn Kenyon and her Dark-Hunter series and now I am waiting with baited breath for my next shipment to get here so I can continue reading her series. I have been an avid Laurell K Hamilton reader and after reading all the current books in both of her series was left desperate and depressed with nothing to read.... THEN I found the Dark-Hunter series!!! I love how each book is devoted to a Dark-Hunter. Getting to know each of them "intimately" and then seeing them make little guest appearances in the next book makes for an awesome read. These are the kind of books you find hard to put down once you start reading. I would recommend this series to anyone who loves the paranormal, adventure, romance-erotica genre. A+, 5 stars, 2 thumbs up!

" A creature doomed to wander the earth in eternal darkness,
he searches the ages for someone to share the endless night of his existence,
for that one woman who would recognize tha man within the monster.

An angel of purity and sunlight, she feared the mysterious stranger whose eyes
promised endless ecstasy even as he whispered dark secrets she dared not believe.

They were two people longing for fulfillment,
braving the danger of a love like no other.
Alone, they faced desolation and despair;
Together, they will share undying passion, defy, eternity, and ....
EMBRACE THE NIGHT "

Despite the very unattractive front cover, I decided to give this book a go, after reading so many positive reviews about it everywhere. And I must say, that I was/am not at all disappointed. Amanda Ashley is definitely a talented writer, and even though the story in not "one-of-a-kind", the author managed to make it special, by adding her own unique twists and turns to it.
The book is divided into two parts: in the first part, the reader is introduced to the story of Gabrial and Sara from the very beginning, how it all started, and is gradually being led throughout the story as it evolves, becoming more and more complex.... Gabriel, a vampire and Sara, an innocent, young girl (an orphan).
And in the second part we meet Sara once again, though slightly different ..... I guess it is a matter of taste, but I found this twist very romantic.
I am not going to go into more details, but will say, that when reading this book, you will feel sadness, happiness, distress, relief and sympathy. I can only recommend this book. So give it try ....

1 out of 5 stars So horrible I feel I need to pluck my eyes out........2007-08-16

First, I'd like you to notice that more than one of these "5-Star" reviews are from the author herself just trying to bump up the star rating.

Onto the book itself, the only reason I read the whole pathetic thing, was because the prologue caught my eye. Not too many romance novels show the couple in question to be seperated right in the beginning of the book. It was very Romeo-and-Juliet-ish.

The cover is laughable. (Which is why I bought it in the first place). The hero is the only character with an ounce of personality, and his personality is creepy obsessive indecisive stalker. Not my kind of guy. The heroine (Sarah Jayne) is less interesting than a rotting fish carcass.

Absolutely NOTHING happens in the first two-thirds of this far too long book other than a never-ending and redundant cycle of "I want her" push her away. "I love him" whine whine whine. The story FINALLY starts to pick up in the last third of the book (might even be the last fourth) when an old lover comes into play. And she has the personality of a nympho, which is at least interesting.

There are SOOOOOO many continuity errors my copy of the book is filled with pen marks to fix them. On one page, the hero is said to be "more than three centuries old". Then a page later, he's 79. I had to stop and read the last few pages to make sure I didn't zone out from boredom and miss something. I didn't. He stays 79 for about five more pages, then all of a sudden he's I think 355 or something. Really, read your work before it goes to print, please.

I'm going to give this author one more shot to write a decent book, then I'm going to give up on her and move on to a more thrilling author. Not recomending this book to anyone. It might drive them to madness. (I don't know how I survived.)

2 out of 5 stars Had Potential, but sadly lacking oomph!.......2005-06-06

This book sounded really good, and it probably would have been terrific if it wasn't for the constant whining of the main character. I mean geez for a vampire he sure acted like a baby. The book consisted of "I love you" "Get away" "But I love you" "Get away from me". One minute he wants the girl the next he tries to get rid of her then whines about not having her then gets her back...its a neverending cycle right up to the end. About half way through the book I was wishing Gabriel (the vampire) would just suck it up and walk out into the daylight.

Not one of the better vampire romances, but if you like your main character to be a 400 year old whiney baby then this book is for you. As for the actual bloodsucking scenes they could have been A LOT better, seriously not what I was expecting.

4 out of 5 stars Bitter Sweet!.......2003-10-17

My first Vampire book was Deeper then the Night -but, turned out he wasn't really a vampire so I suppose this is my first REAL Vampire book to read. I had trouble getting past the first 110 pages. After that I couldn't put it down. It's a page turning, tear jerking, keep you up half the night type of story. If it wasn't for the first 110 pages I would give it five stars. Bitter sweet, heart wrenching read. :-)

5 out of 5 stars The best Ashley book ever!!!.......2003-01-01

If I had to choose which one of Amanda Ashley's books I loved the most, it would definitely be this one. I first read this book when I was 16 and instantly fell in love with the genre. Now at 23, I own all but two of the books written under Madeline Baker's pen name, Amanda Ashley and I so look forward to the next installment. This one is definitely a page turner and a tear jerker. I've actually read this one 3 times. Of all the writers I've ever read, Amanda, you are the best!!

5 out of 5 stars Seize The Night.......2007-09-17

This book was a GREAT read. As are all of the Dark Hunter novels. I'm only about half way through the series, but I'm hooked, and a fan for life.

3 out of 5 stars So/Not So-- So with some moments, Not to action based.......2007-06-15

SEIZE THE NIGHT really let me down. I was looking forward to reading the story of my favorite wacky Deveraux girl but feel cheated, namely because of the characters from former books who can't leave the past alone and the horrible tragedy that befalls one of my beloved men.

The story goes: Tabitha Deveraux, twin of Amanda from 'Night Pleasures,' is a self-made vampire hunter, delightfully eccentric but still tough. She stabs Valerius-- a Roman DH whom everyone hates because, well, he's Roman-- takes him back to her house to heal... and they fight, they misunderstand each other, yet they find one another appealing. I do like the relationship between Val and Tab, but there are so many mundane details that fill up the story that I begin to forget that this is supposed to be a kick-butt romance and start putting the book down to clear my head. Then some former threat from the past sneaks up, but all the while Tab and Val make out and fight with other Hunters because they hate Val's guts for something he didn't even do. I GET IT ALREADY! THEY HATE HIM! CAN WE PLEASE MOVE ON?!?!

And Nick... WHY?!?!? I was so heartbroken for him, and then what happens to him later on is so darn evil that I cry. I must admit that Ms. Kenyon did a good job with that part, even if it was infuriating. This book will do that to you- you don't know whether to grimace in tolerance or begrudge the fact that it has some okay moments.

5 out of 5 stars Originally Posted on Romance Junkies in 2005.......2007-05-13

For those of you who have been living in the Dark Ages, or perhaps under a rock, and haven't a clue of Ms. Kenyon's Dark-Hunter series, there are a few vocabulary terms you must become familiar with before reading this review.

Dark-Hunter: Dark-Hunters are created from ancient warriors-but not just any warrior-only those who have been wronged and are dying, due to an act of treachery and betrayal. At this time, Artemis approaches the dying warrior and offers them a pact-a one-time Act of Vengeance against the party who has wronged them. These soulless beings, neither Apollites, Daimons, nor humans, are the only thing that stands between humanity and the creatures who seek to destroy them.

Apollites & Daimons: Apollites are direct descendants of the god Apollo, who has the unfortunate luck of being cursed when they killed his twenty-seven year old mistress, Ryssa, and child. Even worse, Apollites are forced to die a horrible, painful death over a twenty-four hour period when they are twenty-seven themselvs. Daimons, of course, are the unearthly creatures that Apollites transform into during their twenty-seventh birthday celebration.

Now that you have the basic downs, you can fully enjoy SEIZE THE NIGHT. The latest in Ms. Kenyon's series, this book centers around Valerius Magnus, the good-looking, quick-tempered Dark-Hunter who had the good fortune of being born to a Roman Senator, serving as a Roman General, and conquering cities throughout the countries, too numerous to name. He's also the poor, unfortunate soul who has the bad misfortune of being betrayed, losing the woman he loves, and becomes a soulless Dark-Hunter.

I could say that Valerius doesn't play well with others, but that would be an understatement! He refuses to embrace those who once rejected him, and he's not quite sure how he ended up in New Orleans, staked by one Tabitha Devereaux, a woman who somehow happens to be almost as proficient at hunting and destroying Daimons as he is. But, alas, the gods aren't happy enough just to force Val into working with the Dark-Hunters he has tried to avoid at all costs-instead, fate has decided that his mortal enemy should be married to Tabitha's twin sister. He'd probably laugh, but he lost that ability sometime around 160 BC.

I love this series. Actually, I love every book that Ms. Kenyon writes. But with SEIZE THE NIGHT, she's managed to capture the true emotion of Valerius's pain, his betrayal, and his resolve to stay emotionally uninvolved with Tabitha. Tabitha herself is no humble society debutante-she's worked for years to put her psychic talents to good use, by protecting those she loves, and her city from the destruction of the inhuman beings who wish to destroy it.

However, this time, an evil force is determined to destroy everything that Tabitha holds dear, and if it can take Valerius down in the process, so much the better. The storyline is non-stop action, the heat and emotion between Val and Tabitha is kept at a perfect pitch. Once again, the Dark-Hunters reign supreme-or do they? There's only one way to find out, and that's by picking up your very own copy of SEIZE THE NIGHT.

4 out of 5 stars Action packed!.......2007-04-14

This is one of the best books in the series because so many things happen. Amanda's twin sister, Tabitha, is the heroine in this story and a sassy character she is! She meets Dark-hunter, Valerius while out fighting Daimons and from that point forward they are nearly inseparable. The hero and heroine truly show that opposites attract. There is a good romance, but the action and suspense parts of this book are even better. There is a lot of new information about Ash and some resolution of past conflict. I enjoyed it!

5 out of 5 stars Fight for Night.......2007-03-30

Of course, there are going to be some previous characters coming into play with Sherrilyn Kenyon's seventh main Dark Hunter novel. Tabitha Devereaux, the twin sister to Amanda, finds her way with her spirit and unforgettable spunk into the hearts of beloved Dark Hunter readers. Tabitha, the vampire hunter of the night, comes back only this time to realize her life is deeply threatened and it is not just by the Diamons that walk the street but by her uncharacteristic love interest who threatens the only security she has ever had: her family.

Valerius "Val" Magnus, a gloriously Roman Dark Hunter, a Dark Hunter who has excruciating familiar relations with Zarek and a crucifying clarity of what and who Kyrian of Thrace once was. He will have to face his past along with both Zarek and Kyrian, ultimately one will not survive.

This book is seriously not for the faint of heart. More than one beloved character will parish before the end, however, there is hope for the future and in someone who hasn't fully realized their own powers who might eventually be the key to unlocking the secret of everything. Sherrilyn Kenyon has done it again with a few more twists and turns along the way. Seize the Night offers readers more parallels to what is happening while bringing up more questions yet to be answered.

    Book Description

    A woman made for love...

She thought she was dreaming, melting in her imaginary lover's arms.  Yet when Theodora Lovelace awoke, it was in the fiery embrace of the most dangerous and desirable man she'd ever met....

    A man made for war...

He rode at dark, swathed in black, a privateer and patriot hero--until some called him spy.  No one suspected that Miles Winchester was the Night Hawk.  And only Miles now knew that an imposter rode as well, besmirching his reputation and threatening his secret life.  His only aim was to find the blackguard.  Until he met the stranger in his bed, Theodora, a raven-haired, violet-eyed temptress, in a night of abandon that sealed his fate....

    A passion made for legend...

Within days Theodora was married to Miles Winchester, impressed into wedlock by her uncle, the admiral, to save face.  She vowed no man would ever know her duplicitous, perilous masquerade, her secret rides in the dark of night.  But she hadn't reckoned on passionate obsession, and a marriage of untamed desire and deceit....
